    Barbaro Updates: 550

    updates are now here.

Update 3276: I have arrived at Finger Lakes and am currently in the tackroom of the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program. Quite an impressive facility and certainly front and center in terms of visibility when people arrive for the races. There are about six or seven horses currently here (the meet has not begun) and I watched a potential adoptee ride a horse for trial in the indoor ring they have attached to the barn. They are looking for a horse for trail riding and giving lessons. A very impressive set up really, and the horse went very nicely so hopefully he will be adopted out. I am listening to a lot of talk about their adoption application process!

Update 3275: Superfecta here, with your Tuesday Derby trail update.

After a digesting a great weekend of racing with the Dubai World Cup and a fascinating Florida Derby, I have prepared for your reading pleasure the official 'If The Derby Were Saturday' list of who I'd like to see in the starting gate, along with their next (actual) start. You'll notice there are not 20 entrants in this little exercise:

PyroA model of consistency, albeit one with low BeyersBlue Grass
Tomcito May have unreported earnings from Peru, which apparently do count Coolmore Lexington
Big BrownGreat performance, but still light on experience Kentucky Derby
VisionaireSeems to be improving at the right timeBlue Grass
Denis of CorkWhy the carousel of entries before picking a prep race? Illinois Derby
El Gato MaloBenefits from Georgie Boy's absence Santa Anita Derby
Big TruckEarnings are a question Coolmore Lexington
War PassI still don't think he wants the Derby distance, but could bounce backWood Memorial
Salute the SargeHas a lot of training time to make upCoolmore Lexington?
Z HumorI'm not a huge fan, but can't argue with his earningsIllinois Derby
Smooth AirDid he face a monster in Big Brown?Kentucky Derby
Court VisionPerhaps with some improvement Wood Memorial
Tale of EkatiLooking for redemption in the Wood, great workoutsWood Memorial
Eight BellesFilly has a 100 Beyer and could still try the Arkansas DerbyFantasy Stakes
Proud Spell Her numbers beat those of Pyro in LouisianaAshland Stakes

Of the top 20 graded stakes earners, Georgie Boy and Adriano are (almost) definitely not being considered for the Derby, but I would prefer to thin the ranks further. I would toss out Kodiak Kowboy, Anak Nakal, Majestic Warrior and Halo Najib; they simply have not impressed me enough lately.

Let's recall that Chelokee won finished third in (as you clever people who have been paying attention already know - and thanks!) last year's Florida Derby and skipped the Kentucky Derby (although he made a nice return to racing at Gulfstream over the weekend, finishing ahead of Rehoboth in an allowance race). A lot can happen in five weeks.

Finally, for those of you who have difficulty with time management, Google has solved that problem too!

Update 3274: A change of plan for me today. Our horses have not yet shipped to Woodbine, so I will head north but plan to stop around the Finger Lakes area. I may try to stop by and see the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program.

Update 3273: Georgie Boy, a leading West Coast Derby contender, is off the Derby path with a pulled muscle in his back. The injury occured in his most recent work: Georgie Boy Injured; Out of Derby.

The venerable Perfect Drift is back in training and has now worked twice: Perfect Drift Appears Eager to Race.

More press for the Cappucino Kid save from a feedlot: Half brother to Medaglia d'Oro rescued in Washington.

    Please keep calling and writing.

April 1 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

In ages past our old ones were the storytellers. This was the way things were passed along to the generations that followed. For this reason the aged people made it a point to remember every detail so they could relate it at a later time. They were the word and picture carriers making history and spiritual values alive and important. In recent times we have made our old ones think they are not so important. We spoof their stories and make them feel foolish. The truth is that we are ignorant of what is precious and how to a da li he li tse di---appreciate age. Rigidity can creep in and set even the young mind if there are no soft memories,no laughter, no times too deep for tears. Age is grace--a time too valuable to waste.

We can get over being poor, but it takes longer to get over being ignorant.

    Horse patrol starting at airport

    NORTHERN KY. PROGRAM RECRUITS VOLUNTEERS
    By Associated Press

ERLANGER --Anna Zinkhon will get to take her horse where it hasn't been before.

Zinkhon, president of the board of directors of Northern Kentucky Horse Network, is one of the first to sign up for a program recruiting volunteers to ride about eight miles of trail on the perimeter of the area patrolled by the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport police department.

In its infancy, the program will certify up to 200 local riders to ride the trail at times of their choosing from dawn to dusk daily. The only exception is when the trail is closed, such as it is during a presidential visit.

"Several of us have signed up," said Zinkhon. "The trail is eight miles on the outskirts of the airport, and it's supposed to be really nice."

To become certified, a rider must fill out an application, pass a background check and attend a training session to learn what to look for. Riders also must check in and out with airport police before riding and after leaving the trail.

If they see anything suspicious, it's their duty to report it. And if they don't ride regularly, their badge can be revoked.

Airport police created the program to increase security in areas officers can't always get to. The program was inspired by similar volunteer horseback patrols at the Nashville and Houston airports.

"We patrol them as much as we can, but we don't get out there as much as we'd like to," he said. "So we designed this trail to look at areas we think we'd like more eyes looking at."

Word of the equine trail program has spread mostly through word of mouth, and Murphy said he's seen a lot of interest.

Because of the initial popularity of the program, there's already talk of extending the trial, which was created last year by riders from the Boone County Sheriff's horse patrol, Murphy said.

"We are getting a large response -- there's a great need for people who want to ride, and there's not a lot of trails in Northern Kentucky or Cincinnati," he said.

HRTV Inside Information - Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jn1T9aH-7mc&feature=user

And this is the text that accompanies the HRTV Video linked above, about the TRF horse rehab prison programs:

Throughout the country correctional facilities seek to rehabilitate prisoners as they serve out their terms of sentencing. To stem the tide of recidivism, some innovative prisons in Iowa and New York for are utilizing programs - in association with such organizations as the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation -- to teach prisoners through hands on instruction how to care for horses. In the process many of these hardened criminals find that not only are the horses lives changed for the better, but so have their own.

In Iowa, the warden of the Newton Correctional Facility has seen these changes first hand, "These guys all their lives have bullied or pushed their way to get what they want. So when they come down to deal with the horses, these huge animals, they can pull them all they want but the horse gives them what they're willing to give. So they have to learn other techniques in getting a horse to comply with what they want done, whether it's go right, left, stand still. So it teaches them another way to deal with animals then ultimately dealing with people."

Inmate Skyler Steenahoek at Newton has had his life transformed by the experience, "Personally, well I kinda made a mess of my life and it gives a chance to work with animals, learn something new... gives me an opportunity to learn a new trait. You learn empathy really quick down here when you see horses that are hurt and you give them care... it's really kinda emotional..."

Thanks to Debbie L.A. for bringing this video to our attention.

Morning (not April Fool) skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George and the rest of the fabulous gang in Equine Heaven...

MORNING POST for down below, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI/
    AAHS:

    STRATEGY FOR TUESDAY, APRIL 1

Congress reconvened on Monday March 31. As the effects of the Americans Against Horse Slaughter lobby days continue to linger, let’s make sure they know we are still here.

We MUST maintain our momentum and remain relentless in keeping those phones calls and faxes ringing in Washington as well.

For the present time, we will be targeting Representatives. The magic number of co-sponsors that we need is 218. We currently have 196. This is very achievable based on feedback from the Americans Against Horse Slaughter lobby event and have witnessed the cosponsoring of (3) MORE Reps since March 1st. We specifically need help gathering the names of those Reps who you feel are close to cosponsoring HR503. Once we have this information, we can target this list and possibly see a quicker conversion for support. Please email all info on this directly to us through the DB on ABR. You can also watch for our extra target list that will come via email.

Please mention Americans Against Horse Slaughter when making your calls and remind them that we are a non funded, grassroots group of people from across the country brought together for the sole purpose of passing this legislation. It is important that they know we have NO OTHER agenda.

New to the 110th Congress: Please ask them to cosponsor HR503

Add'l info re the Reps on today's (Tuesday 4/1) ABR national strategy list.

Although all these Reps are new to the 110th Congress, they have demonstrated their horse-friendly (or not) position by their votes on HR 249 last year in the 110th. Here's how they voted on HR 249 (Y = Yes; N = No):
    Joe Donnelly - IN (Y)
    Phone: (202) 225-3915 Fax:(202) 225-6798 aide: Kirk Theophanous
    Brad Ellsworth - IN (N)
    ph:(202) 225-4636 Fax:(202) 225-3284 Aide: Matt Inzeo
    Mary Fallin - OK (N)
    Phone (202) 225-2132 Fax: (202) 226-1463 Aide: Bryce Walker
    Phil Hare - IL (Y)
    Phone: (202) 225-5905 Fax: (202) 225-5396 Aide: Janna Bergquist
    Dean Heller - NV (Y)

    Hank Johnson - GA (Y)
    Phone: (202)225-1605 Fax: (202) 226-0691
    Aide: Alexandriene De Bianchi

IMO - in add'n to whatever else you say in your contacts - Please tell those who voted YES on HR 249, THANK YOU for that vote - but remind them that HR 249 only applies to WILD equines and we still need HR 503 for the rest of them and to stop export.

    Wow.
Wrap your brain around that one.

(This is a signature line on one of Tracey's friend's ID for Mare Stare... I really like it.)

Unbelievable day here: almost 60! I cannot remember when we last had that temp. I swear those greys went out today--anticipating rain, anticipating cold. And to a hound, they all just looked up at me as if to say: WHAT THE FRAK IS THIS!?

(cAN YOU TELL THERE'S ALL DAY MARATHON EPISODEs OF THE LAST 2 (OR MORE) SEASONS OF bATTLESTAR gALACTICA ALL THIS FRAKKIN WEEK?

When I was a little one: dad innundated us with science fiction, Arthur C CLarke, Ray Bradbury,

    AH...

After we all loved Outer Limits, more sTAR tREK SPIN-OFFS, Stargate and Stargate Atlantis--even the great Buffy the Vampire slayer. And Joss Whedon's wonderful ill-fated Firefly.

BUT then came along Battlestar Gallactica, and Sci Fi peeps were just gobsmacked by the EVERYTHING of it. This series has produced more HOLY CRAP! moments for me than anything else on TV.

Ah well: Belle and George look so fine this morning. Hoping Tracey's new drug protocol for that baby will get her on the right path. That woman HAS to get some sleep.

Time to make calls soon. I feel that this has just got to be a greyt day for us all--it's time for one of those!!!

Drippy and foggy and slightly humid in the Downeast this morning. We're hoping for some of Jonna's 60 degrees but not sure if that'll happen.

Still, we continue on with our mission.

Alex, please enjoy your time in my old home area of the Finger Lakes. I love that state but I love living in Maine, too.

Not quite the Lake Country of your island, but so rural, and those glacial lakes are amazing: just scratched/carved into the ground, with steep banks, many vineyards and a thriving NYS wine industry steadily gaining ground on the French and CA wines. The Boston Now, frontpage article! Why end horseslaughter?

    http://www.bostonnow.com/news/local/2008/03/06/activists-want-end-to-horse-slaughter

Listen to what Lester Friedlander, former Chief Inspector for the USDA has to say. He is a veterinarian and worked as a slaughter line inspector for more than 10 years for the USDA. He received repeated certificates of merit and commendation from the USDA, and was USDA Veterinary Trainer of the Year in 1987. He was asked to do a study on whether the captive bolt method of slaughtering horses was humane and his official conclusion was that it was not humane. 1) The bolt was designed for cattle and pigs and not long enough to stun horses whose brains are further back in their skulls. 2) Horses are flight animals and would require head restraint for stunning, which is not supplied. It is not unusual for horses to be shot with the captive bolt several times. It does not kill them but merely stuns them. 3) The horses regain consciousness after 30 seconds and are aware and sensitive to pain as they are hoisted into the air by one rear leg and bled out while their heart is still beating.

The cause of the problem is not the lack of US slaughter (which is not humane) it is irresponsible overbreeding. The American Quarter Horse Association last yeat registered 150,000 horses, the Paint Association, 38000 horses, the Jockey Cub 37,500 horses, the Standardbreds 11,000 and all other breeds less than 8,000 horses. The AQHA claims they have registered 4.4 million horses and their mission is to generate growth. Who is creating the problem? The AQHA is the major breed group opposing the anti-slaughter bill. The Jockey Club and Standardbred owners and other breed groups are supporting it. Horseman need to be controlling the breeding, being responsible for what they breed, and euthanize when suitable homes cannot be found.

Horse meat sells for BIG BUCKS overseas, a steak will set you back a good $20. Horse sausages, a specialty of Cavel International, formerly of Dekalb, IL, are quite the delicacy over there. By the way, Belgian-owned Cavel Int'l was in noncompliance of Dekalb's sanitation codes for excessive BODs (all that blood was always such a problem for them), ammonia, etc. every month it operated. The same holds true for the two Belgian-owned horse slaughter houses that operated in Texas until last year. Kimberly May of AVMA has some nerve feigning concern for the environment and all those imaginary unwanted horses. Actually, I think there's been the same number of UFO sightings. The AVMA wouldn't recognize animal welfare if it slapped them in the face. In addition to actively pursuing defeat of the horse slaughter bill, AVMA is also actively lobbying against the Pet Protection Act to ensure Class B animal dealers continue collecting 'random source' dogs and cats (pets stolen from private cars/backyards; lost pets collected from shelters and pounds) to sell cheaply to research laboratories. It's a money thing. And it's always the same old fable: horses will suffer if they aren't slaughtered; dogs and cats will suffer if they aren't collected and sold to laboratories. Give it a rest, AVMA. AVMA wouldn't recognize sound science if it captive-bolted them in the forehead, either. For example, decades after other countries stopped use of growth promoting antimicrobials in animal feed due to scientific evidence of resistant strains in humans, AVMA stubbornly held strong to its position statement in favor of such unhealthy practices used only in intensive farming situations. Having demonstrated years of zero regard for health and life of humans and animals, it was not until 2005, and only then because it had become too embarrassing for them, did the AVMA finally weaken its stance on use of antibiotics in animal feed, basically by passing the buck to the FDA. The AVMA, whose idea of humane euthanasia for unwanted chickens is an industrial tree chipper, has lost all credibility. AVMA members warned there would be masses of starving horses when CA banned horse slaughter in 1998, but there were not. Yet horse thefts dropped in CA some 35%! All media reports of masses of abandoned, starving horses have been proven false. It's time to quit with the tiresome 'unwanted horse' scaremongering campaign. All horse slaughterhouses in the US routinely imported horses from Canada and Mexico to help fill overseas orders. Weekly slaughter numbers through the years match overseas consumption. Actually, it is stupid from a disease prevention point of view to have slaughterhouses in the US drawing random source horses en masse from Canada and especially Mexico. So, contrary to the opinion of the AVMA, the AAEP, the Natiional Cattlemen's Association, the Pork guys, the Turkey guys, the American Quarter Horse Association (notorious for overbreeding and trashing them young ) and other pro-slaughter groups with HUGE VESTED INTERESTS in a horse slaughter trade, there are no valid reasons for a horse slaughter trade in the US.

horse slaughter is unacceptable. Slaughter continues to allow

overbreeding, neglect, starvation, loss of land, trails, etc.

we do not jump pigs, trail ride them or cattle either. Horses

need to be raised up to the level of no more slaughter.

When that is done, land for hay, for horsekeeping, and trails,

will increase, not decrease..slaughter continues to cause these

losses. For 50 yrs, slaughter has not gotten rid of excess horses but perpetuated this....no horse deserves to be

    slaughtered....

The bolt gun that was used in US slaughter plants failed to make and keep horses unconscious thru the butchering. Prior to the completion of butchering, an animal's heart must remain pumping or the meat will putrefy and be inedible. The bolt gun is designed for cattle skulls and fails too often on horse skulls since horses' brains are much farther back in the skull, and the wide and frequently frantic movement of the horse's head makes the bolt gun a poor choice for making them unconscious. The fact that the method fails to make them unconscious (with a single blow) before they are killed means that THIS IS A VIOLATION OF THE HUMANE SLAUGHTER ACT of 1958, which was enacted TO PREVENT INHUMANE TREATMENT during the slaughter process. The US is not enforcing its own laws because it loves the powerful agriculture and farm industry monies more than it cares about US voters. Doesn't that make you sick?
There's more. Mexican slaughter plants use a knife in the spine, and the Canadian plants use a small caliber rifle to stun prior to butchering. Know that every bulk transport truck of horses that you see here is on its last ride to these slaughterplants, and then on to the dinnerplates of French and Japanese diners, and at over $50 per pound, horses are not feeding the poor. Get mad, call Washington and keep calling: 800-459-1887 and ask for your congressmen and senators today.

    **Congo** Game plan*****

    Hi,

If you send Judge Ostrer an email regarding Congo in c/o Mr. Stellwag, you basically get a response stating the court won't look at letters other than that from the parties involved. I think the Judge understands how the general public feels and realizes we all want Congo to live!! We did a great job conveying the message.

Let's focus on the contacting the Governor until Friday; his contact information is:

Governor Jon Corzine- 609-292-6000 and ask the governor to pardon Congo. You can also email him at:

http://www.state.nj.us/governor/govmail.html and where is says- Select a Topic choose- “Law and Public Safety” and select a Sub-topic, choose- "Pardons and Clemency" and fill in your information to send a note to him. You don't have to live in New Jersey to call or email our governor.

This reprint of the article in BOSTON (!) is heartening. thank you so much for putting it out to us. It's encouraging to me, and to the public, IMHO it's just the right marriage of fact, emotion and revelation.

    Good Morning Famblee

    I'M HERE AND I'M CALLING

Been so busy at work that I am not keeping up very well with all the posts. I also now share an office with my puter screen in direct view of him...uugghhhhhh!

(((Renee)))...I am so sorry to hear about your friend. What a tragedy! I don't understand why they let these people out. You need to go hug one of your horsey frens as soon as possible.

BarbAZ...your post about the attitude of the show people was very interesting. How naive folks are. They need to see the videos. To see the fate of horses who have no choice.

Last night I received a link to a documentary that needs funding. I posted on the DB and have emailed the film maker to find out their position. Shoot! Brain fart this AM. I'll be back with more info.

    Here.

If I had my own horse/s......... Come April 6 I will be unemployed again until October. I was planning on parking my gas guzzling Montero for the summer, pumping air into the bicycle tires, digging out the saddle bags for the bike, and doing most of my travels on it, unless in an emergency. If I had a horse I would surely use he/she instead. Fortunately, I live in an area that this would be most suitable.

If only I had my own....................sigh.

HERE'S JOE FOR APRIL FOOLS DAY
    ***********************************************
Tuesday, April 1st... Yesterday was amazing. 50 horses were adopted, our best ever day.

Okay just kidding. April Fools. But there were 2 adoptions, which is not bad for a Monday. On Sunday we met The Garat Family, and they put a saddle on the sweet gelding Hampton Way. His manners were excellent, and around our big round pen he was ridden. Yesterday mom Angela Garat phoned to say they want him. Hampton Way leaves us for his new home this weekend, and Georgia & Jenny Hartman will provide transportation. There is a photo below on the top left of The Garat Family with their new horse.

By No Means (we call him Big Mo) found a new home with The Hansen Family, and he leaves us on Thursday. Holly Meeks provides transportation. Big Mo will become best friends forever to Casper, an older quarter horse gelding who recently lost his long time companion. Big Mo has arthritis in both front ankles, and with Casper the ground is soft. There are orchards with grass, and a 9 year old girl to bring them both carrots.

3 months are gone for 2008, and there have been 41 adoptions.

Taxes must be completed in two weeks, and Cathy found a receipt for a 2007 dinner at Applebees in Vacaville. We have not been to Applebees in several years. Where did this receipt come from? And who stuck it in our receipt box?

We spent more than $600.00 on carrots last year. Mostly from Pedricks Produce and Costco. Now that is a lot of carrots.

What we paid for gasoline in 2007 could easily erase the national debt. And now comes word gas will be the highest ever this week. $4.20 for Diesel, and $3.69 for Regular. Always at the gas station there is a $1.25 cup of coffee. Lots of cream, a bit of sugar. Sometimes a doughnut that is so stale you know for sure it was made in 2004. But if you dunk that doughnut in your $1.25 cup of coffee it becomes chewable. The little tricks in Woodland to survive. At the Taco Truck ask for mild, otherwise you will not sleep that night.

I love this time of year. Baseball and softball and receipts for a meal you cannot remember. Trees come alive. Horses shed their coats, and old mares flirt with old geldings. I would like to send out a Special Hello to Grace who lives in Ireland. I told you how our friend Holly Meeks is going to Ireland for vacation, so Grace has offered Holly a room on her ranch. I would like to send out a Special Hello to Eric & Carla in Reno, and it was really good to hear from you. Eric is a pilot for an airline, and he looks down for our ranch when flying above. I would like to send out a Special Hello to Susie in Whittier, California. Thank you so much for all you do for horses Susie. And I would like to send out a Special Hello to Jessie in Orangevale. You mean the world to Cathy and I Jessie, and we hope you are doing okay.

Enjoy your a storm is coming Tuesday, and be sure to hug your horses.

    Joe

Top left: The Garat Family, Igancio, Angela, and Cielo. With their new gelding Hampton Way.

Top right: Hard to believe it has been 4 years since Eric & Carla came from Reno to adopt Patricks Slew. They love him like crazy, and he has many toys.

Bottom row pictures are by request.

Bottom left: We have 2 mustangs on our ranch, and we must watch what they eat. Feeding a mustang is not the same as feeding a race horse. A mustang can gain weight just from looking at food. Here is Mimi, and we must often bring her to the barn to keep her from stealing food from other horses.

Bottom right: We call him Red Machine, and he won a Cal Cup race and made a gazillion dollars. Red has a friend at the race track who often sends him a bag of sweet corn.

EXTRA TUESDAY 4/01 NAT'L TARGET LIST (HAHS)

FIRST THINGS FIRST - Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311 / HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/ request: Ask the Senators who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Senator Mary Landrieu, sponsor and promoter of the Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their recently-released 2008 WHITE PAPER are in the DB thread noted near the bottom of this post.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

    800-828-0498

    800-459-1887

    800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE SUGGESTION/CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE Prior HS History above the LIST OF LEGISLATORS below.)

    1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

    2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

    3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

    4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

    5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

    Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Tuesday 4/01/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

    Tuesday 4/01 Extra HAHS List

PRIOR HS HISTORY - All the Reps on this list voted for HR 503 in the 109th Congress AND voted for HR 249 in the 110th.

IMO - in addition to the usual spiel - THANK them all for having voted YES on HR 249, and remind them that HR 249 ONLY applies to WILD equines, and we still need HR 503 for the rest of them and to stop export.

AND Thank them for voting for HR 503 last time - and enlist their support again - remind them it passed in the House by a LANDSLIDE then but unfortunately was never enacted because it never got to a vote in the Senate.

Just got this from Tuesday's Horse. The poem just seems to be so appropriate. We have lost so many dear ones, fallen Angels:

Don’t cry for the horses that life has set free.
A million white horses forever to be.

Don’t cry for the horses now in God’s hand.
As they dance and they prance in a heavenly band.

They were ours as a gift, but never to keep.
As they close their eyes forever to sleep.

Their spirits unbound. On silver wings they fly.
A million white horses against the blue sky.

Look up into heaven, you’ll see them above.
The horses we lost, the horses we loved.

Manes and tails flowing they gallop through time.
They were never yours - they were never mine.

Don’t cry for the horses. They’ll be back someday.
When our time is gone, they will show us the way.

Do you hear that soft nicker? Close to your ear?
Don’t cry for the horses. Love the ones that are here.

You can also email him at:

http://www.state.nj.us/governor/govmail.html and where it says- Select a Topic choose- "Law and Public Safety" and select a Sub-topic, choose- "Pardons and Clemency" and fill in your information to send a note to him. You don't have to live in New Jersey to call or email our governor.

Please say a prayer for my son's best friends (married couple) who are at the hospital praying for the life of their first baby. Michelle is not due until May 25th but her water broke yesterday and they are trying to keep the little one from coming at least for two more weeks.

Michelle is doing well but every day is crucial for this little boy's life. Please spare a prayer for him and his mom and dad. They are great kids and it breaks my heart to see them so scared.

Hi Alex and thanks for the site that supports FOB'S that have a loss!

We were called about 4 AM Monday morning by our daughter holding the phone for Bob Jr. He said Mom ...I am dying ...please hurry...and he repeated it twice. We literally flew from NC to MI with a 70 mile average and arrived at 6:30 P.M. at the hospital. He did hang on to say goodbye to me and his father. Although very weak ..I could understand him. He was heavily sedated and felt little pain although he labored considerably in his breathing. He died at 1:26 April 1st.
The sad part was that his body was denied for Michigan State Lab research at the last minute because of a super bug that had recently taken hold in his blood and they didn't want the med students to contract it. He wanted to keep fighting this terrible disease by donating his body to the University...That one wish was denied him....he was a gallant fighter out living most of the other people who had Multiple Myeloma. He fought for 3 1/2 years...
What wonderful people you are to comfort us and if you would like to support Joe and TB Friends...that would be wonderful!
This was my first attendance to see someone die and the fact that it was my son was to tell you...it was a Hell on Earth for me and the others that were with us.....
I said to him...Bob Jesus is coming to take you up with him....and he said " I know ..I have seen Him"...

I am sad for the transition of Bob Jr....but am overjoyed that he saw Jesus at the very end (or what I would call the very beginning). I am happy you were there and that he hung on long enough to see you one more time on this earth.

When the darkness seems to close in around you, close your eyes, open your heart to God and you will feel Bob Jr's loving presence with you...guiding you, comforting you.

    D'Anne
when my little adopted niece was almost 3, (she's now a newlywed in her first REAL job at 25..) she went through a period of fearfulness around men she did not know. Lots of SA around anyone but our immediate family.

Shrinks say this is not unusual for adopted kids: as one doc said, do you think they hear Mozart and laughter and kind, loving voices through their Mom during her pregnacy? Uh, well, nope.

Anyhow: there is a point to this, the family was attending a fairly fundamentalist church at the time. Questions about God and Jesus were common, lots of attention to scripture, etc.

At at some point, in a conversation aound the dinner table, pursuant to nothing in that conversation, Faith said,
"I will be so happy when I see Jesus."
My sister lifted herself off the floor, and said,
"Well, that's good honey. But why?"
Faith said, pure as the driven snow,matter-of-factly:
"Well, when I meet Jesus, I won't be shy of him."

OK, so from that point on, in MY life, I believe people who say they experienced what your dear son did. And I take great comfort in it.

    Holding you close...jonna

I got Edgar's book in the mail today..I've read about half..one mistake? I have found over and over unless it's a double name..Edgar calls Barbaro's groom Jose, not Eduardo all thru the book?? Is his name Jose Eduardo??? I can't imagine that not being caught during editing.. does anyone know??

Mike c, is you're still here..Edgar contends Barbaro was first and foremost a turf horse..do you think in hindsight they should have kept him on turf? I have more questions than answers reading this and am very emotional about it..

    STRATEGY FOR WEDNESDAY APRIL 2

Congress reconvenes on Monday March 31.

Hiya, FsOB! I am sitting here wiping the tears from my eyes because so many of our beloved FsOB are dealing with significant tribulations right now. My heart goes out to D'Anne, Cheryl Jones, Renee Antaya, & Deb Anderson. I am hoping that Erin Brennan and her family see some relief from what has been a dreadful time for them since shortly after Easter. Please know that you are not alone, dear "frens". Peace, RMH

    #### To Alex: please be safe as your journey continues.
To D'Anne: It must have been a comfort for Bob, Jr. to have you at his side as he passed over.
To Renee A.: We all need to be vigilant and keep our doors locked, here in the "Land of Steady Habits" (CT). It is appalling to me that this State has seen a second home invasion that resulted in death. Something is very, very wrong in CT. The Governor should be angry and appalled, but she should also take responsibility for what is within her power to bring about change. My deepest sympathies to you upon the loss of a dear friend, who sounded like a lovely, caring woman, a retired nurse and a cancer survivor.
To Deb Anderson: Keeping the young friends of your family in my thoughts. Many miracles are worked in NICUs each day. May Michelle's baby stabilize and thrive.
To Cheryl J.: Very sorry to learn of your friend's death and to hear that your position was 'downsized' (a term that is a fear-inducing one for anyone like me who is > 50 years old).

I have not received e-mails from caringbridge either! A bit concerned.

Have not heard about Erin. I will try to post when we hear something.

Prayers continue for all who need them on this sad day.

    Hi everyone,

Jeff Tucker from Raindance Farms has posted some pictures of our MN FOB visit last Saturday, and written about the FOB's donation to the Windchill Legacy. Go check it out - it's on the main page at: www.raindancefarmsusa.com

It was a wonderful trip - even the "fence-testing" LOL!

Linda, how 'bout telling us who is who in the pictures? Left to right sort of thing?

Posted by: Barb AZ, Chunky and Punky at April 2, 2008 4:25 AM

    Hi Barb,

Happy to! From the left: Daryl, Becky, Laurie, Leslie, Jeff in one pic/Kathi in the other, me.

And, in the first picture, Walker is in the bottom corner of the picture, by Daryl!

Well, it's the time of night when I am talking to myself here at Alex Brown Racing. I'm doubting if we will get an update about Erin tonight. I'm also doubting if I will be awake. I will probably be the only one.

Good night, All. I love you folks and you are the best, even when you are all asleep!

Posted by: Barb AZ, Chunky and Punky at April 2, 2008 4:36 AM

Whoa! Somebody else is awake! Thanks, Linda! I was guessing which was Jeff, because I know Daryl. Now the rest fit into the puzzle.

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, will I be first this AM? I tried to be yesterday, but the new entry was getting set up, I suspect. Wishing everyone a safe & productive day. RMH
