Barbaro Update: 572

updates are now here.

Update 3393: Today's Kentucky Derby Minute (which is 2:27 minutes long): Tuesday's Derby Minute.

Update 3392: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly Derby trail update:

Until tomorrow afternoon's post position draw, the only Derby trail action is analyzing (and overanalyzing) the contenders' works and every possible bit of data available, no matter how tangential.

To that end, I always look forward to playing with the C-J Derby Data Track (and was pleased to discover its origins in a post at TheRail); one of the options might prove particularly salient when comparing this year's hype horses to last year's results -- proven ability to handle traffic. Street Sense and Hard Spun had a 'yes' in that column; Curlin a no. Beyond the overall 'experience' tag, this is a factor I like paying attention to. Horses with the dreaded 'no' this year include quite a few I do like - including Z Fortune, Eight Belles, Denis of Cork, Smooth Air, Gayego and, of course, Big Brown. If I were judging by that factor alone, it would make Visionaire, Tale of Ekati, Pyro and Colonel John look particularly attractive.

But adding in another factor complicates matters; if I go by highest Beyers, Bob Black Jack heads straight for the top of the list (which, if anything, looks very 'sprinty'), followed by Big Brown, Gayego, Recapturetheglory, Z Fortune and Eight Belles - no one else has cracked the 100 mark; Colonel John's highest is a 95.

Two BRIS speed ratings of 100 or higher yields a more select group -- only Big Brown, Tale of Ekati, Pyro and Cool Coal Man.

Whenever I mix and match the factors I'm most interested in, three horses keep coming back to the top: Tale of Ekati, Pyro and Visionaire.

So, with all that, who do I like (at least in the pre-post-position-draw world)? It's looking something like this:

I'm still grumbling about Tomcito's absence (especially after a nice work yesterday - I'd happily toss Anak Nakal, Z Humor and Cowboy Cal to let him run) and that of an also-eligible list, but at least I have the Belmont to look forward to.

It's worth checking out the short article on Big Brown's former trainer, Pat Reynolds, as well - he's another one who got Curlined (and he suggests that he sold for considerably more than the reported $3 million). He mentions Big Brown's odd patch of white on his left side (check out Barbara Livingston's photo of it here -- and a rather dramatic shot of him acting up in the Saratoga paddock before his first race); anyone who read King of the Wind as a child can probably read far too much into the white spot.

Update 3391: My post today on The New York Times The Rail:

Barbaro's Fifth Birthday

A quiet morning for me this morning at Woodbine. We had a lot of walkers and a few workers. Only a handful of horses galloped, I rode two. I helped out on the ground making sure the workers were ready when necessary and went out to watch a few of the horses working. A pleasant morning to be around the horses although it was a little chilly!

Update 3390: Big Brown has now arrived for the Derby: Brown In Town.

Today would have been Barbaro's fifth Birthday. A day to celebrate his life and do something for horses everywhere: 4/29 CALL TO ACTION ALERT!!!

Hiya, FsOB! Today would have been Barbaro's 5th birthday. Look at all the good things that have transpired because of this Sublime Horse! Many other horses have been saved from slaughter, thousands of dollars have been raised for laminitis research, three slaughterhouses have been closed in the US, and so many of us who had been unaware of horse slaughter have been galvanized to fight for passage of S 311/HR 303. "And it's all Barbaro, the undefeated Barbaro, in a sublime performance!" Peace, RMH

Morning BIRTHDAY skritches to the BBH! Morning BBH's birthday skritches Sir JH, Gorgeous George and the rest of the stellar gang in Equine Heaven.

For them!

MORNING POST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI/AAHS:

STRATEGY FOR TUESDAY APRIL 29

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARBARO!!!!

Today, we are asking you to take part in a national effort in honor of Barbaro's birthday.

On April 29, there will be a national effort to urge Congress to support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, to stop American horses being transported to Canada and Mexico where they are being slaughtered for human consumption.

While the Humane Society of the United States focuses on targeted grassroots outreach to certain individual members of Congress, HSUS has asked us to take a special part in this effort which will be to focus our energy on the biggest impediment to this essential legislation being passed in the Senate—Larry Craig, who has put a hold on the bill.

HSUS is calling on all Fans of Barbaro to bombard Senator Craig's office with phone calls urging him to allow S. 311 to move forward. If enough people participate, we could shut down his phone lines for the day in a massive show of force, demonstrating just how many people support the bill he is undemocratically blocking.

Tuesday, April 29, please call Senator Craig’s office at 202-224-2752 and tell the aide answering the phone: “I am calling to ask that Senator Craig allow S. 311, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, to move forward.”

Remember, "WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE"...let it be heard!!

Thanks again for all that you do!

Happy birthday Big Boy!! Enjoy your day with your friends. So badly missed and never forgotten. The pain of your loss never ends. Love you.

Posted by: Stu at April 29, 2008 12:29 PM

Happy Birthday to you Barbaro.

A year ago today many of us gathered in Delaware to celebrate your birthday. It was a day of rejoicing, tears, and healing as your loss then was very fresh and at the surface. It was a day I will never forget. Many people who had never met each other joined together like old friends at a reunion - the feeling was unforgettable. We all were blessed by the presence of mom and dad Jackson, Eduardo, Jeannine, Edgar's precious words, Mike Rea, the New Bolton staff, Sabina, and of course our hero Alex! Watching the NBC documentary was the most emotional moment for me, especially when the words "and here comes Barbaro, the undefeated Barbaro!" rang out - well, the cheers and tears were overwhelming...

One day soon - hopefully next year, we will celebrate not only your birthday but a year without the fear of your brothers and sisters going to slaughter. THAT day will truly be a day to remember!

Always Comfortable Now

Love you, Big Boss Horse!

###Happy Barbaro's Birthday Day to all FOBs! And looking back, we can marvel in everything this group has become, all because of a BBH named Barbaro.

I firmly believe that all things happen for a reason, and when they are fresh--and especially painful or upsetting--we are confused because we don't understand.

But with the passage of time we begin to see the reason or a path that we must travel in order to find meaning to all that has gone before. And look at all that you all have accomplished.

###Prayers to all who are in need, safe travel to all who set hoofie to track--or pedal to the metal--and looking forward to Saturday.

I'm opting for Big Brown. Anyone else?

HONOR BARBARO - SUPPORT THE MO HORSE HEROES!

Today is the last day to contribute to Barbaro's birthday tribute in support of the MO Horse Heroes. The Fans of Barbaro have been very generous in support of these survivors of the horrendous double-decker trailer accident in the fall of 2006. Many of the horses have blessedly found their forever homes; many others, because of medical issues, will be permanent residents of Longmeadow Rescue Ranch and need our donations.

Please check the thread and do what you can...in honor of Barbaro and in honor of the miracle of these survivors! You can sponsor a horse for as little as $5 each...

Thank you for your ongoing presence in their lives!

Everybody - please try to get your "regular" (non-FOB) contacts to make that ONE CALL today. Email your whole address book with that simple request.

Thanks Marg in Maine for reminding us that today is also the birthday of Misty at MHR, venerable mother of Bobby's Spirit, the second of the first two foals born to mares rescued by the FOB's from slaughter. (Misty was part of that very first FOB save with MHR way back in Oct. 06.)

There was a pic of him "hugging" the play-ball in the roundpen that is one of the cutest horse pics I've ever seen. Anybody have the link to it? If so please post; if not I'll go fishing over at the MHR threads at the DB and post the reference here so more FOBs can see it.

Peace and Joy to all his connections (The Jacksons, Peter, Michael, Dr. Richardson, Eduardo) who shared him with us; our lifeline to each other Alex and Tim, and all the precious souls (FOBs) who continue to "get it".

IN A PERFECT WORLD…

In a perfect world, I would have risen before the sun to be first to wish Barbaro ~ the Triple Crown Champion and Champion of my Heart ~ a Happy 5th Birthday!

In a perfect world, Barbaro would have been prepping for a race for “4 year olds and up”…perhaps at Churchill Downs, scene of his subliiiiiiiiiiime performance OR he would have been preening for a rendezvous with a stunning mare who would present the world with the gift of his glorious child!

In a perfect world, horses would no longer be transported across our borders to face the reprehensible horror of slaughter at the hands of evil, ignorant people!

In a perfect world, we would be finished with our task of calling-faxing-calling our legislators who seem to have closed their ears, eyes and hearts to the will of the very people who elected them, and who seem to have turned a deaf ear to the screams of horses in the throes of death!

In the real world, we must dig deeper into our reserves of strength and determination so that at last we fulfill Barbaro’s legacy and NO HORSE IS LEFT BEHIND!

In the real world, we can never let our flagging spirits keep us from the tasks at hand ~ in honor of Barbaro’s tremendous impact on our lives, in honor of the community he “hoof-picked” to be his earthly warriors when his days on earth were done, in honor of the breathtaking magnificence with which he graced us during his short life!

Barbaro DOES dwell in a perfect world now ~ a world of lush green pastures, warmth, light and peace…where his celestial soul-mate is soon to bring forth the son and daughter he was never blessed to know in this world!

May the Lord bless you and keep you, beloved Barbaro, as I bless you for your impact upon my life…I am a better person because of YOUR life, and you are ALWAYS COMFORTABLE NOW!

All my love,
Nancy

Here is a link to Wood End Farm's blog that will make your heart feel good! Wood End Farm is a cool rescue that even has an equine swimming pool to help horses with injury rehabilitation. Check out how several OTTB's did in their very first horse show and be sure to check out Liam. What a shocking difference in him!

Cheryl JOnes,
My friend, thank you so much for your GREAT insight as always. Our farrier would not be with us if he was not a horse loving man, he ownes his own. He is just concerned for the horses and where they will end up. I love to be around him when he works on the horses, he is so kind and gnetle, talks to them like they are his kids, and just loves them. He puts them to sleep while working on them. He says he is there to correct and keep them comfortable. I like him!

Happy Birthday, Barbaro!

This morning I was awakened by the sweet calling of a dove. There is a nest in the tree outside my window. Hadn't heard her before this morning. I'm certain that she is announcing the birth of her babies, and her joy in the new lives. We celebrate yours today and everyday, and remember how you touch each of us each day everytime another horse is saved. We remember you each day that we call the peeples in DC, as we pledged to your mom that we would.

If you were still here, surely you would be a STALLION, snorting your disdain at us referring to you as our Big Bay Colt. Yes, you would be an amazing stud, fulfilling your destiny by perpetuating yourself with amazing sons and daughters. It wasn't to be, so instead, we will take colts and fillies and mares and geldings from harm's way, and continue to fight for their survival, whether it be in a cool pasture filled with aging thoroughbreds or in backyards where sturdy quarterhorses, stock horses, draft horses and all manner of horses live beloved to old age in pampered contentment. We will work tirelessly to ensure no colt is left to die freezing and starving in a cold meadow. We will work tirelessly to ensure that no horse is left injured and starving by a roadside. We will campaign endlessly until those peeples in DC get it.

We'll do this for you, on this, your fifth birthday and for every birthday to come and all the days in between. Happy Birthday Heart Horse of Hevvin.

Aunty Cheryl loves you and misses you sooooooooooooooooooooo much

Thank you for everything - especially for the the greatest gift, for my sweet Sherman. I love and treasure him, and will always honor his spirit. Please continue to guide us.

Thank you for bringing all of us together - we have learned so much because of you, and The Spirit of The Horse. For a much too brief time, we experienced the light and power that you are, that your spirit continues to be. We experienced the miracle and the wonder - and I will never forget. Your courage and determination stand as a shining example of the spirit of the horse, and it is an honor to have witnessed your life. Well done Magnificent Steed!

The Light of God surrounds you
The Love of God enfolds you
The Power of God Protects you
The Presence of God watches over you
Wherever you are Barbaro, God IS.

Nothing will ever separate us. Love you forever horse.

The PREZEEDENT makes me queasy. Really.

((((((((((((((I lub my FoBs)))))))))))))))))))
You are all mine because of the brief, shining life of that beautiful big, bay colt. My eyes are opened to things and events I would never have known of--or would have told myself could never have possibly been real--but for his life and struggle and death.

We are the House that Barbaro Built. We are the Barbaro Nation. No one--NO ONE--puts a wedge between us.

I have called all the Larry Craig numbers CJ (thank you, sweetie) so helpfully posted for us.
The DC phones are still working, so we need to make MORE CALLS....

And now: I have to turn the TV off, because my tolerance for watching/listening to The Prezeedent
is about 10 minutes, under the influence of a strong sedative (jest kiddin') and that time has now expired.

I have never felt such loathing towards a sitting American President. Altho Nixon came close....

Courage, children. Keep on keepin' on.
Yole know what I say about stuff like getting S311 in gear,

IF NOT US, THEN WHO!!!!!!

Posted by: jonnagrey at April 29, 2008 4:14 PM

I talked with a woman in Sen. Craig's office, and she sounded polite but not friendly. I will settle for polite if Sen. Craig gets our message.

I think, somewhat jaded I guess, that most of the things, like holds, are done due to money- lobbying money, etc., but I don't know about Sen. Craig. I hope an outpouring of the peoples' messages will give him pause to reflect.

Call on you peeples.
Barbaro I love you, thank you and miss you.
Happy Birthday Big Guy, Superstar of our hearts.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARBARO!!!!

Today, we are asking you to take part in a national effort in honor of Barbaro's birthday.

Today there is a national effort to urge Congress to support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, to stop American horses being transported to Canada and Mexico where they are being slaughtered for human consumption.

TODAY, please call Senator Craig’s office at 202-224-2752 and tell the aide answering the phone: “I am calling to ask that Senator Craig allow S. 311, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, to move forward.”

Remember, "WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE"...let it be heard!!

NOTE: So many of you are responding to this effort that Senator Craig's phone lines have been LIGHTING UP!! It may take a few minutes to get through....please be patient.

A BREAK FOR A LEETLE CUP O' JOE:
***************************************************
Tuesday, April 29th...
You gotta love those chat rooms.

Yesterday I was joking around, and wrote Rascal Flatts will be singing this weekend at the ranch of Jodi Tuft. Jodi is throwing a huge party, and everyone is invited. I wrote Just Kidding about Rascal Flatts. But apparently things went crazy in a chat room, until Holly Meeks went on line to douse the rumors. Poor Jodi is wondering how can she get Joe to quit writing his morning journal?

More from chat rooms: The topic was how Joe Shelton gave away a horse worth $20,000.00. Huh?

Last Friday Hannah in Vacaville received the horse of her dreams. An already trained thoroughbred appendix, and I understand in the beginning he was bought for big time dollars. But that was then, and this is now. His worth on Friday was free. An owner from a fancy barn in Davis brought us this beautiful gelding, and in turn we gave him to Hannah. We have a list of hopeful people who want an already trained horse. Hannah has been on our list since December. She came with her parents and easily passed our screening process.

But for reasons I fail to understand, there are others who like to judge and condemn. Because her horse is free Hannah is critized and called a spoiled brat. One person wrote Hannah must have sucked up to Joe big time.

I seldom respond to this garbage, because we all know there are people who like to tear down the happiness of others. Hannah never once sucked up to me. What business is it of others anyway? On Friday when she received her gelding Hannah cried from happiness, and she wanted to share her excitement with other boarders. But the put downs began. Face to face, and on the internet Hannah was ridiculed. Yesterday Hannah moved her gelding to another barn. She phones to say the people at her new barn are very nice, and there is no drama. One girl invited Hannah for a trail ride this Sunday. Another girl helped Hannah give her new horse a bath. My kind of barn...

I was told not long ago a very good friend of ours was ridiculed in a chat room because her husband moved out. And she had to sell her horse. It boggles the mind how people can find time to publicly enjoy the sadness of others. You can picture them at their computers, nothing at all going on in their lives, waiting to jump all over someone.

Our friend sold her horse. And it broke her heart. She has filed for divorce. Never ever will you meet a more giving person. A horrible time in her life right now, and yet she has to endure the judgement of strangers.

Since we are talking people and horses and judging others, I want to share with you a story. I was told by several people to stay away from a certain person in Davis. I was told the person did not feed her horses right. I was told she would buy cheap horses at public auctions and then resell them to first time buyers for giant profits. I was told she stole money from an old man and partied for a week in Vegas.

Well who cares? I got my own problems. But then I met this girl, and because of all the rumors I am naturally skeptical. But her 5 horses are beautiful. Like they were polished with Lemon Pledge. All with good weight. The girl was polite and shy.

And so the second time we met I asked her. Did you steal money from an old man and go party in Vegas for a week? Do you buy horses cheap at auctions and resell them to first time buyers with little horse knowledge?

The girl says she has never been to an auction in her life. But she would someday like to go. She sold one horse, to a great home, for one dollar. All of the evil rumors going around Woodland and Davis were created by another person she had personal problems with.

I was guilty of judging someone I had never met. A lesson learned.

We went from 91 degrees on Sunday to cold and windy last night. Today we could be 65. Our shoer Tim comes this morning, and later there is employment at another ranch, earning the big bucks. Enjoy your American Idol Tuesday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

Then and Now.

Top Left: Imagine came to us from Animal Control 2 years ago.

Top Right: Imagine today. Imagine trusts me a little, but for the most part he is not fond of humans.

Bottom Left: I bought Wyatt at a feed lot in the summer of 2007.

Bottom Right: Wyatt today. He loves people. Once when the passenger door was open on the old ranch truck, Wyatt had one foot and his head inside. I wish I would have had my camera. Wyatt wanted to go to town with me.

has this been posted yet today? [sharing email from martita, 4/29/08]

like a song in my hands

the day tumbles out of heaven's pocket
the hills and woods here blasted with fresh
green green leaves
so tenderly unfolding in the utmost trust
that they will bloom in the sun
just around the corner

today
Barbaror;s birth day
we had TO lose him
to find the core of greatness cut into our being that day
that first day
saturday in may
when we were all in joyful ONE

all the world suddenly in technicolor
taking us all to the demise
,crashing down
in that historical holy racing dirt, then
eight months later
to the pit and bottom of why life happens
then buried underneath the searing screaming'' no'' not this
pain
.you see everything
why you love
hey the ultimate gift
to focus on
two more chances he left behind

we have two more souls to see and feel unfold to hear

..packed dreams to live
no living in a shell

there is THIS TIME
GUIDing
SPECIFICALLY
FROM HIS THREAD
WILL WE GET IT? THEN?

he dropped to the soft hay
hands ready to pull and support those magnificent long legs

Nicanor

bold brilliant ,muscles all ready
something splendid
a joy
he felt
loving the play of the humans he has met

little Lentenor
whose fur is just receeding
cantoring
leaping in the field with his'' neighborhood ''pals

READY FOR NOW
LOVE IN THE MSUCLE AND IN HIS EYES
bursting with an elegance you would have to be half blind to miss

the hands that have softly put those halters on
and the food buckets that have been filled so lovingly
with the meal any kid foal filly, would kick for

in the grooming of these three
the nation might well take guidance from
how to bring up a happy bouncing child

the care and the firm boundaries willing to bump here and there

' curious wanting to learn
the fences rolling over the hills
gently placed in rung by rung
in a very specific way

a fence that is clean and direct
enclosing carpets of green grass to roll in

the promise of more love
hey more love

thank you from above

to have placed this great golden tapestry in front -of me

two years ago
smarty jones leading me to the derby
never really watched in my home /
something side ways
from my mother;s southern roots

horses then
always part of the mythic life
for me

the thank you
comes now upon a very long oak table
set for a royal feast
to share with friends all around the country
.some who help me directly
to do my job on earth so much better

some who i read about and weep
for their loyalty and kindness
,some who log and document every horse that comes our way

..in need or in splendor

some who march forward
and tackle the oily an dubious
with steady resolve and wisdom
and some who speak to cats and dogs
and even snakes who have had a bad turn with the human hand

i hold their song in gratefulness

as it flies around the world today

i thank
therefor
this day

i am

a fan of Barbaro
i treasure the community that has grown
leading many of us to find out how wonderful unique is the map

of every horse

..the elegant ones and the trained ones and the abandoned ones

the voiceless ones

and the free and wild ones

love the great heart in each horse
what a chance , an opportunity
to feel
COM----
in french for
with
passion
compassion

wow what a way to live
'royal
that is all i can say

deep blue royal
of how we behave and can behave

the love

hear me
Barbaro

thank you

thank you for every
thing you endured

all the people you chose to bring before the world;'s stage
INTO their
the
light yes that light
to and discover what
greatness lies in each heart OUT THERE
can be shared
and grown

and YOU
gave and splashed upon the fabric of life

mine
others

in this aching world
that wants and screams for that very thing
in all the noise of EGO
THEREFOR I AM
ME
NEVER MIND THE REST
HA
things and making money

can you hear
then the song he gave
he gives
on the very breath you draw and breathe

He said, "We're getting so many calls from all over the country." I asked him if they are considering/counting nonconstituent calls, and he said yes.

Good good good - and it's still so early in the day!

Everybody - call all your friends - email everybody you know - just get them to make ONE LITTLE CALL.

I tell them it's a minor-major favor; a little thing to them that means so much to me.

THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE FAXING - please fax not only DC but also the local offices. It will be noticed.

Good Morning Famblee

I'M HERE AND I'M CALLING

GONE TO SOON.......................

Barbaro would have been 5 today. Misty is 27 today. Were it not for Barbaro Misty would not have seen her 27th birthday, Spirit would not be here, nor would the 2100 horses that the FOBs have saved from slaughter. Quite a legacy and we've only just begun.

Barbaro, I wish you were with us to enjoy one of Stephanie's yummy apple juice/carrot frozen treats for you birthday. Were it not for you my boy Cloud would have ended up on a European dining table rather than my beautiful boy who I adore. Rosie would not have been with us to present to us the Diva herself, Baby B. I, like so many of us would never had known about the awful end many horses face.

Barbaro, I miss you so much but were it not for you where would I be today?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BIG BOSS HORSE.
You are forever in my heart and I will forever honor your legacy dedicated to the FOB cause.

April 29 Cherokee Devotional [sharing excerpt from email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Life stirs up our priorities--makes us think beyond our usual knowledge. There are enormously important things basic to all of us such as the family. The family as a whole is important, and so is each individual. Family makes us consider health and spirit and the capacity to take care of ourselves. The invisible circle gathers all we love close to us. But the final arc involves the making of who we are personally. Each person must know contentment, must be in awe, reverent toward the spiritual, recognize the truth, and not go strictly by the depths and height of feelings. Searching for happiness leads us far afield when the search is for self, for a divine connection, a knowing that we are indeed divinely centered. We are a part of the earth, part heaven, one with every living thing. For this reason we love. The ga lv quo do, the precious, the dear truth is that we love.

It is the command of the Great Spirit, and all nations and people must obey.

Just made another call to Senator Craig's office because....it was call number 29 today. Fitting no? This time the aide asked "Is this for the slaughter bill?" I said "Actually ANTI-slaughter" He sort of snickered and said "sorry, my mistake". Then he said "There are a lot of you, aren't there." I said that there are probably one thousand more to each one of us who call, maybe more. I asked that he please make sure that the Senator "hear" us, all of us, even those who can't call, those who are worried because things are so difficult in this great nation at this time, and they don't call because they're afraid that they will NOT be heard, that they don't matter. I asked him to PLEASE let the Senator know that the bills matter to us who love horses, to those who are moral and ethical and believe in the humane care and treatment of horses and all animals, and that the persons who were voted into office should do the right thing. He said he would. I said please do, in honor of Barbaro on his birthday. He said "What a great horse." Indeed.

Thanks to all who are posting such wonderful words today. To honor Barbaro on what would have been his 5th birthday, I am calling, donating, and looking within myself for what I am meant to do as part of the legacy he left.

While we are sorry he could not leave sons and daughters to this world, what he has reproduced by his spirit has spread beyond a mere stallion's reach and will last forever. Some of you may remember these lines from a poem I wrote long ago, and I hope the words ring true today:

Your purpose was changed, or at least it so seems,
From running and chasing a Triple Crown dream,
To entering in a new race we can share,
With nobility, decency, courage and care.

No effort too small, no vision too large,
Renewed interest and focus, we each can take charge.
Emboldened to take just one step at a time,
These steps all together can help change mankind.

May we learn from your journey what we need to know,
And then pass it on, to inspire and grow.
To help others in need, both your kind and ours,
To be champions - like you - as we fight for a cause.

Unaware of your influence, blissfully free,
And living your life with such clear purity,
You didn?t mean to be a hero, that much is true,
But Barbaro, you are. And for that we thank you.

reposting - bears repeating

Happy 5th Birthday Beloved Barbaro ...

A Bittersweet moment in history today
A tormented tugging of my heart
I refuse to be saddened on Your Birthday
Yet tears well in my eyes
And flow gently on my skin

How can you be gone so long already
It seemed like only yesterday
You were crowned King of the Derby
Yet today those roses are wilted and gone
But the memory lives on vividly in red splendor

And I will rejoice today in my sadness
Because birthdays are meant to be celebrated
And commemorated and cherished
And held gently in the heart
And cradled softly in the soul

So I will toast to your “presence of greatness”
Recalling that “Grief is the price we pay for love”
As my own loving grief is a tangled emotion
Of the bitterest lemon with the sweetest nectar
And I shall taste them both with a peaceful knowing

Happy 5th Birthday, my Sweetest “Bobby”
Soar higher and freer in the Heavens today
And take a moment to smell the Roses
For they shall bloom again and again
The Day you were crowned King of the Derby!

I love you Always
I miss you Still
I’ll cry Forever
You’ll dwell in my heart eternally,

Linnie

Posting for Nina

It is Tuesday April 29Th, 2008. A foal was born 5 years ago today that changed the racing world for horses and people forever. The foal was named Barbaro. He was a beautiful foal and oh how sweet he was. He loved to run. His manners were perfect and he was easy to train. He loved people. God put in his life the best owners, trainer, riders and jockey that anyone could ever have. Well Barbaro went through his young life and won his races. He won all of them. Wow... We had a really good colt. It was the first Saturday in May 2006 and it was the Kentucky Derby. Barbaro was the star. He was the favorite and he was already loved by all because of his mannerism. Edgar Prado mounted him that day and boy O boy did he ever come through. He won the Kentucky Derby by a huge margin. For sure we had a Triple Crown winner.

I don't want to devote this day to the loss of our beautiful colt but to the life he had here on Earth. His life changed all of us. He gave us hope, and faith and love. He let us know that if we really put our heads together and minds to things, we WOULD get results!!! He taught us the meaning of the word UN-DEFEAT!!!!!!! I am here today to say Happy Happy Birthday Barbaro... I love you with all of of my heart and may you always be running free and happy for eternity.........

Your memory will always be with each and every one of us. We think of you everyday. You really really did change the lives of millions. You were the one colt that left a hoof print in all of our hearts. The Derby is this coming Saturday. It is going to be yet another hard day to get through. Surly for your wonderful jockey Edgar BUT with the fond and beautiful way we see you, we know that you are watching over all of us. We know Barbaro that you will be with us this week. We know that you will be with us on Saturday. We know :)

Hey, family -

Anyone else remember the kd lang song, "I Will Never be the Same"? That says it all for me, vis-a-vis Barbaro.

I've been absent forever, and am likely to be gone a bit longer, for which I am very sorry. I miss everyone, and think of all with love. My brother, who is very dear to me, is extremely ill, and that is claiming all my attention and burning my extra time at an alarming rate. Someday, one way or the other, this will be resolved, and I will get a life back.

In the meantime, I wish each and every one of you a glorious Barbaro's birthday, and joy and good health in your lives.

Love and comfort to all in need, four-legged and two-legged, and have a Barbaro day - courage and kindness.

With love, as ever - Jean

I can't believe it's been almost 2 1/2 years since I saw that big maiden win his 1st time out and so impressively. If only we weren't robbed of the greatness he had that was still untapped. I still feel that if he ran, he would have solidified his place at The Hall of Fame right next to Big Red, John, Man o' War and the rest of the greatest to ever hit a track.
I remember you today and everyday, and WILL NEVER FORGET YOU and NEVER FORGET WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN.

Didnt give Chief his nilla wafer because he was sleeping. The dr. said he is holding his own and walking a little better. They put him in a dark room and used a light-his eyes are still bouncing around some. Naturally his regular vet is out of town. The guy kept telling me he is almost 13. well, I know that. anyway will go back this afternoon. I REALLY appreciate all yoles prayers and the candle. I have had a long time friend that called today and her statement was "well, you can always get another one". Dont you just hate that? Like I could just run out and get another Chief. She DOES not GET IT!!! Am about to call craigs office. Happy Birthday Barbaro. Look at what just one life has accomplished. You did have a destiny. ###will let yole know how chief is doing later. Sandra:
Are Chief doesn't have vestibular syndrome? Are his eyes moving back and forth quickly: that's called nystagmus, and it's a pretty classic symptom. Vestibular hits only dogs and cats in the warm weather...is he circling in one direction, not hungry, head tilted in one direction?

Google it: I hope --well, I am sure your Vet is smart enough to know one thing from another. But diagnosis can be tricky...

Should we not make "too much" out of Big Brown's white spot?

As my fave comedian, Craig Ferguson, says about an unrelated subject, "Remind you of anyone?"

Didn't Barbaro have the white spot on his left rear leg? And Big Brown and Big B are related after all. Just tossing this out there.

Posted by: Margie at April 29, 2008 8:17 PM

I just spoke to a pleasant person in Senator Craig's office (although she called me "ma'am" which always makes me feel OLD). I asked to speak to the legislative aide for animal issues, and she immediately said "Is this about S311?"

She said she could record my comment, and was intrigued that I was calling from CT...and even more intrigued when I informed her that as of the Fall 2006 Homeland Security survey, CT has MORE HORSES PER CAPITA than any state in the nation.

My parting shot was that, although I realized that the Senator was not running for re-election, in view of the groundswell of public opinion to pass this legislation he was doing a great disservice to other Republican candidates...particularly their presidential candidate, who has long been a co-sponsor!

When I asked if she had received many calls, she answered, "ALL DAY!" Great work, people...a fitting tribute to Barbaro on his birthday!

Posted by: Nancy in CT at April 29, 2008 8:20 PM

I am glad you got to see him...save that Nilla Wafer...and Sandra...he IS there with you...honest he is:) Remember that song the man wrote because he is a recording artist, on tour and his young son asked when was he coming home? "I'm already there, take a look around, I'm the sunshine in your hair...I'm the shadow on the ground...all those words, Sandra...Chief is there:)

Thanks for checking in....:) Look for you later on today....xoxo

Okay, I'm not usually into anything too religious or whatnot. But this morning I woke up early and realized right away that it was Barbaro's 5th birthday. I immediately sensed a well being peaceful feeling from him. I know because I felt him nearby and could sorta picture him in my mind in a field full of grass. He told me that he is at peace, he's happy where he is. That we aren't to worry for him. He's grateful to everyone for what they did for him, all those goodie baskets--those for him and those of his human friends. He indicated to me that he was or is now aware of how everyone stood by wishing and hoping good things for him. He's sorry that he had to go but his time here was done. Barbaro wanted me to thank everyone for all they did for him--those at NBC, his beloved human family and those of us that have become part of his extended family.

I don't know if you believe in cosmic things or religous ones. I just know these were the impressions I got at 3:30 am CA time this morning.

Deb L.A. They have the same grandsire. But due to early senility, I cannot remember his name. :(

Barbaro's legacy is everywhere and has brought us all together to save many of his brothers and sisters. Great posts today in honor of Barbaro.

I think Craig's fax should be out of paper by now and his aide said they are getting many calls, he needs to listen to the American people as we speak for the horses who have no voice.

Jean Nolan - great to hear from you.

Awesome works on HRTV, Big Brown looked great today, he looked like you know who getting off the van.

Wish I could say Happy Birthday, but I can't. I will say THANK YOU for having brought BARBARO into our lives because through him our lives will never be the same.

In loving memory of BABRARO, I did call Senator Craig's office. Sadly, the phones didn't sound like they were ringing too much. Please continue to call him office.

Everyone, Please Call if you Haven't!! Have friends call, too! Or, if you don't have the courage to make the call (hey, I see you out there!) have a friend call for you :) Then have them call for themselves!

Here's a random shoutout to some of my animal friends who have passed through rescues and shelters, all abandoned/forgotten by their humans. Let's remember ALL the sweethearts today, in shelters/rescues/auctions and just plain bad situations. They need our love!
