Barbaro Updates: 549

updates are now here.

Update 3272: Pyro worked three quarters today in company with Sonoma Cat. Oddly I have galloped the latter. Michael Matz's Visionaire will also run in the Blue Grass at Keeneland for his final Derby prep: Pyro Works Six Furlongs at Keeneland.

Steve Haskin takes his weekly look at the Derby picture and the new star: Ky. Derby Trail: Hot Brown on Derby Menu.

Update 3271: A busy day today running around Pennsylvania. I went over to New Bolton Center and caught up with Jennifer Rench, Kathy Freeborn and Dr. Richardson. I then went over to Lael Farm and caught up with Tom, Jackson's farm manager and his wife Kathy. From there I headed over to New Holland to see how the market was holding up for horses going to slaughter (in Canada). Prices still appear to be strong ($300-$400). There were about a half dozen thoroughbreds there, the saddest being an old broodmare. Unfortunately I was not in a position to rescue. I did see at least one thoroughbred going to a private buyer, and it looks like she got a really nice gelding. Christy, from Another Chance 4 Horses was there also. On my way back I stopped off at The Whip for lunch and chatted with Gus Brown (x Champion Jump jockey and exercise rider for Graham Motion) about how we need to be more responsible as an industry with respect to our horses. Gus had some interesting ideas.

Update 3270: Some excellent posts about Curlin and Pancho and connections here.

My last day (I think) in the Fair Hill area for this visit. My day may include a visit to Fair Hill, New Bolton Center and New Holland Auction, although the day may unwind differently.

Update 3269: No sooner is a weekend of great racing over and we look forward to another set of Derby preps as some of the contenders who were not in action last weekend worked ahead of their intented starts. In California Gato Malo and Georgie Boy worked ahead of Saturday's Santa Anita Derby (Three-year-olds impress with drills). In Kentucky Denis of Cork, Blackberry Road and My Pal Charlie each worked (Derby Contenders Work at Churchill) and in New York contenders prepped for the Wood Memorial this weekend (Several Turn in Works For Wood Memorial).

Please keep calling and faxing and become a citizen co sponsor of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

All,

Today, 3/31/08 is the last day to sign Congo's petition. If you haven't already signed, please do so- there are only 170 signatures on the petition to save Congo's life!

http://www.petitiononline.com/gcd01/petition.html

Also, please consider sending the **judge an email** in care of his Team Leader, Michael Stellwag. We don't have Judge Ostrer's email so we can send our note to Mr. Stellwag and ask him to forward the email to the judge or print it and give to Judge Ostrer- our notes should be polite and respectful, after all, this is the judge that will be deciding Congo's fate.

michael.stellwag@judiciary.state.nj.us

Also, please contact Governor Jon Corzine at 609-292-6000 and ask the governor to pardon Congo. You can also email him at:

http://www.state.nj.us/governor/govmail.html and where is says- Select a Topic choose- “Law and Public Safety” and select a Sub-topic, choose- "Pardons and Clemency" and fill in your information to send a note to him. You don't have to live in New Jersey to call or email our governor.

Thank you, Daphne

Goodmorning

I have been having mega medical tests ......
Today doing so much bloodwork I'll look like a pin cushion by the time they're finished ??!!Still one more test after that. A Wall Study to test my heart function??? Hopefully there will be some conclusion and the swelling in my legs will then subside allowing me to once again wear my highheels that I love so much and my legs won't look like tree stumps??!!

Chief I can certainly sympathize with you about doctors but I don't think they'll let me stand in the parking lot???!!! LOL I could use a few Kathy pats if you can spare them????

Praying for ALL today....

MAKE those calls...another slaughter plant in Nevada??? WE MUST STOP THIS INSANITY!!!!!

HUGS and love

Good Monday Morning Everyone,
Yawn. I am so tired. The wake was tough Friday, the Horse Symposium Saturday and Sunday was good, then back to the rescue to do work there. I got a beautiful picture of Han's and Madison now to find the perfect frame.

I hope you all had a good weekend. Is there any news on Georgia and Belle. I thought of them over the weekend.

Alex,
Please be safe and enjoy your travels. Where are you heading now?

Good Morning Handsome Boy. I love you.

But Barbaro, no one could ever match the race you did at the Kentucky Derby and in our hearts forever, we love you.

Good Morning Family/Fans of Barbaro

MONDAY WITH JOE, CATHY AND 110 HORSES--VERY LUCKY HORSES--AND LOTS OF OTHER BEASTS:
****************************************************
Monday, March 31st... All the time animals are abandoned on our county roads. A few weeks ago neighbors Gene & Pam found a Queensland Heeler wondering around County Road 19. Gene & Pam put him in their car and went home. They did all the right things. Contacted the animal shelter, and ran ads in newspapers. But it soon became apparent the little guy was abandoned. He is about a year old, very sweet, but he does not get along with their other dog. If you know of anyone who could give this guy a good home, call me at 530-383-2120. There is a picture of him below on the top left. He still has his testicles (no one wants to read the word testicles on a Monday morning Joe) but we will help pay for a makeover.

More complaints that I do not answer e-mails, but oh yes I do. Since the last storm when AT&T went to work on our telelphone lines, this computer is faster than Kobe Bryant. AOL tells us letters are probably erased by a spam thingamajig. Feel free to phone me. If I am earning huge sums of money scooping poop at another ranch, I will soon call you back.

There were thousands of letters and phone calls (actually only 5) from event trainers asking for a close up photo of Garros. They want to see his neck and shoulder. Below on the top right is his neck and shoulder.

In 2005 sweet Ida came to us and adopted Raise Expectations. I love these Then and Now pictures. Below on the bottom left Ida is posing with her new horse. Jessica is also in the picture, and she and her mom Melanie have adopted 8 horses from us.

Below on the bottom right is Ida and Raise Expectations today. Thank you very much Ida for sending us this photo. Raise Expectations is beautiful.

more to come

Posted by: joan roya at March 31, 2008 3:45 PM

Good Morning Famblee

I'M HERE AND I'M CALLING

Had a lovely weekend at MHR spending time with my boy, Cloud, grooming horses, continuing the education of Baby B and doing daily chores. I have realized just how much I love those horses with disabilities. When you are able to gain the trust of a horse who has been abused, if only for a moment it like nothing I've ever felt.

I don't know about this slaughter house rumor. Steph is gonna call the governor. Theresa reminded us that there is a place called slaughterhouse something or other up there. We'll see.

Nellie's loss is a huge void at MHR. Steph is taking it so hard. If we can just get her story out there to raise awareness......

Late morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George and the rest of the stellar Heavenly Equines!!!

MORNING POST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI/AAHS:

STRATEGY FOR MONDAY MARCH 30

Congress reconvenes on Monday March 31. As the effects of the Americans Against Horse Slaughter lobby days continue to linger, let’s make sure they know we are still here. As we hear stories of a possible slaughter plant opening in yet another American state, we must get this federal legislation passed!!

We MUST maintain our momentum and remain relentless in keeping those phones calls and faxes ringing in Washington as well.

For the present time, we will be targeting Representatives. The magic number of co-sponsors that we need is 218. We currently have 196. This is very achievable based on feedback from the Americans Against Horse Slaughter lobby event and have witnessed the cosponsoring of (3) MORE Reps since March 1st. We specifically need help gathering the names of those Reps who you feel are close to cosponsoring HR503. Once we have this information, we can target this list and possibly see a quicker conversion for support. Please email all info on this directly to us through the DB on ABR. You can also watch for our extra target list that will come via email.

Please mention Americans Against Horse Slaughter when making your calls and remind them that we are a non funded, grassroots group of people from across the country brought together for the sole purpose of passing this legislation. It is important that they know we have NO OTHER agenda.

New to the 110th Congress: Please ask them to cosponsor HR503

Michele Bachmann – MN Phone: (202) 225-2331 Fax: (202) 225-6475 Aide: Beau Rothchild

Nancy Boyda – KS Phone: (202) 225-6601 Fax: (202) 225-7986 Aide: Justin Hagel

Bruce Braley – IOWA Phone: (202) 225-2511 Aide: Todd Wolf

Chris Carney – PA Phone: (202) 225-3731 Fax: (202) 225-9594 Aide: April Metwalli

Kathy Castor – FL Phone: (202)225-3376 Fax: (202)225-5652 Aide: Nathan Taylor

David Davis – TN Phone: 202-225-6356 fax: 202-225-5714 Aide: Megan Caldwell

Remember, "WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE"...let it be heard!!
Thanks again for all that you do.

Posted by: Nancy in CT at March 31, 2008 5:43 PM

Just back from a three-day show. We went for two of them. My daughter did OK, not great. That's how it goes sometimes.

Every morning when the show started, we began with the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance. Eight horses rode into the arena carrying the American Flag, the Arizona flag and the 4H flag. They rode in with pride and majesty and it was a truly beautiful and moving sight.

It occurred to me (again) that cows and pigs and chickens do NOT carry our flags or our soldiers into battle. Horses have served us for years and are "service" animals. If the farm and agriculture groups cannot bear to consider our horses "companion" animals, they certainly should see that they are "service" animals. They have carried us into battle in every single war we have ever fought, and are still doing so for police in every state. They have died for us.

Watching those magnificent animals carrying our flags and our humans, how, why would turn around and send them to slaughter FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION?

Having been among the horse community for the past several days, let me tell you that THEY are among the worst offenders. Here are just a few reasons:

1) Many STILL believe that the breeding industry will not survive without slaughter. Translation: the ones that are not the rights “color" or "conformation" would actually have to be kept alive. (How sad.)

2) That’s the way we have always done it. (Well, actually that is not the case. Horse slaughter is relatively new, only in the past thirty years, I believe.)

3) I’ve never really thought much a bout it. THIS was the response I got most of the time. (I will hide my head in the sand.)

4) It is the only HUMANE thing to do with "unwanted horses." This, coming from horse owners. They have NO CLUE as to the HORRORS of horse slaughter!

5) It doesn't affect ME. Again, I think I will just hide my head in the sand.

It seems to me that, as in any issue, we need to EDUCATE. Somehow, we need to get the facts out to horse groups, horse owners. If we could bring them around, we would have a tremendous amount of support.

I'm off to make my calls, because I HAVE TO. I can't live with myself if I don't do ALL that I can.

Don't forget the state groups! Email Steph:

JOE The Second Half of Monday:
************************************************

Oh Barry has a new home with Stephanie of Woodland, and he leaves us later today. Oh Barry came to us from a feed lot in 2006. We named him Oh Barry because Oh Mandy was playing on the radio when he arrived. But what gelding wants to be called Mandy? Since Barry Manilow was the singer, we named him Oh Barry. He was skinny with bad feet. Barry went to live on green grass with a foster family and he blossomed. It is not often when old timers from our fields are adopted, but good for Oh Barry. And good for Stephanie. Barry is the third horse she has adopted from us.

At least 5 and maybe 6 more horses come to us this week. From race tracks and feed lots. One of those horses is said to be sick with strangles, and we have made arrangements to isolate him at another barn.

111 horses are begging for breakfast, so a brand new day must get started. The man on the radio is saying rain could be heavy on Wednesday. Enjoy your last day of March, and be sure to hug your horses. A special hello to Brianna, and I am sorry we missed your visit. Thank you for the cinnamon rolls Brianna, and your frosting is the best we have ever tasted. Pony Boy ate a cinnamon roll, and then packed his suitcase. Pony Boy wants to go live with Brianna now.

Joe

great post. I have found a few friends with horses similarly inclined to say--"oh, that's THEM, not US."

### Marg in Maine, my friend just bought a little place on Little Orchard Beach. She left New Mexico Friday and is headed that way.I WILL be visiting someday. Last time I stayed in Maine it was in Kennebunkport. The B&B was right on Porpoise Bay, or Key, right next door to Bush Sr.'s place. We were living in Hartland Four Corners, VT at the time.

It is snowing here also, gray and miserable. Spring has not sprung yet.

Add'l info re the Reps on today's (Monday 3/31) ABR national strategy list (w/ corrected phone and added Fax for Rep. Braley):

Although all these Reps are new to the 110th Congress, they have demonstrated their horse-friendly (or not) position by their votes on HR 249 last year in the 110th. Here's how they voted on HR 249 (Y = Yes; N = No):
Michele Bachmann MN (N)
Phone: (202) 225-2331 Fax: (202) 225-6475 Aide: Beau Rothchild

Nancy Boyda KS (N)
Phone: (202) 225-6601 Fax: (202) 225-7986 Aide: Justin Hagel

Bruce Braley IOWA (Y)
Phone: (202) 225-2911 Fax: (202) 225-6666 Aide: Todd Wolf

Chris Carney PA (Y)

David Davis TN (N)

IMO - in add'n to whatever else you say in your contacts - Please tell those who voted YES on HR 249, THANK YOU for that vote - but remind them that HR 249 only applies to WILD equines and we still need HR 503 for the rest of them and to stop export.

REPOST STRATEGY WITH CORRECTION TO REP BRALEY INFO

Bruce Braley – IOWA Phone (202) 225-2911 FAX:(202)225-6666 Aide: Todd Wolf

Chris Carney – PA Phone: (202) 225-3731 Fax: (202) 225-9594 Aide: April Metwalli

Kathy Castor – FL Phone: (202)225-3376 Fax: (202)225-5652 Aide: Nathan Taylor

David Davis – TN Phone: 202-225-6356 fax: 202-225-5714 Aide: Megan Caldwell

Remember, "WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE"...let it be heard!!

EXTRA MONDAY 3/31 NAT'L TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's extra HAHS List NOW posted at the DB Thread noted near the bottom of thos post, and here in this Comment (please scroll down this post).

FIRST THINGS FIRST - Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311 / HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Senators who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Senator Mary Landrieu, sponsor and promoter of the Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their recently-released 2008 WHITE PAPER are at the DB Thread noted below.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-459-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE SUGGESTION/CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE Prior HS History above the LIST OF LEGISLATORS below.)

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Monday 3/31/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

Friday 3/31 Extra HAHS List

Prior HS History: All are new members of the Senate for the 110th Congress.

OK, one more thing about our horse show and its after effects. We took Punky along for her halter classes. She had to stand at the trailer the whole day. We spent Saturday night at a friends house. We let Punky out and she RAN and RAN and RAN, because she had been tied up at the horse trailer the whole day.

Sunday, she looked exhausted, but still she had to stay at the trailer(except for a few minutes during her class.) She was very glad to get home Sunday night! She ran some more. Shortly later, after we had fed, I noticed Punky was fast asleep--in her hay! She had a flake under her head, and was using it as a pillow. She was just too exhausted to eat! Too funny.

March 31 Cherokee Devotional (sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Be strong, be of good courage---so much we worry about will never happen. Put things in order, change what needs to be changed, but begin at once to count the wo tsa to li gi, the blessings that the Cherokee knows must be told again so we will not forget. Forget the past by which so much of life is marked. Painful things happen---and we take a little of all of it with us. This is a new day, i ga, a new time to be renewed. The more we let yesterday's unhappiness slide away, the sooner we come into the fullness of the present. Sorrow will fade. The new hour will bring new experiences, new jobs to do, and even a few negatives may line up to be counted. Don't do it. We can begin at once to call for what we want. We will coax all the sweetness out of every hour and it will sing for us like a bird.

We can't go back. The bridge is gone.

###
I wish Spring would arrive. It was a drizzly, damp, cold day at the ranch. I was outside for as long as I could take it, but then I had to come home and get warm. Its taken me nearly 3 hours to warm up...but at least I've seen crocuses blooming and they always cheer me up.

###
Martita, check your e-mail. Have spent the last hour crying...

###
No foal yet at the ranch. Casey was contentedly grazing - in fact, all the horses were in a very still place. It was very hushed at the ranch and that energy is still with me. Its like the Universe is holding its breath until the next "event" (or change) comes down the pike.

HORSE-POSITIVE MEDIA STUFF

(1) Don't forget - NBC-TV - ACCESS HOLLYWOOD today (Monday) is featuring a therapy horse's impact on one girl's life. Still don't know the details, going by the trailer I saw on Friday. Check this DB thread for any add'l details that may have been added by other FOBs. THIS IS GREAT MEDIA EXPOSURE ON JOBS FOR HORSES, answering one of the points raised by the pro-S camp (WHAT WILL WE DO WITH ALL THE HORSES???)

AND YET ANOTHER ANSWER -

OTHER HORSE-POSITIVE MEDIA stuff - I heard on WBBM Radio out of Chicago, that someplace (missed the location) is instituting HORSE-PATROLS for the huge perimeter of the airport - how the horses can go where vehicles cannot. Will try to find out more and let y'all know. ANOTHER GREAT JOB FOR AN UNSLAUGHTERED HORSE!

LIVING PROOF . . .

###
MIKE C - yep, I posed the question to you...and I'm your faithful (hopefully not your ONLY listener) on RHR! And speaking of Barbaro, do you remember how much flak MM took for giving him FIVE weeks off before the Derby...the media (and probably most of the tbred world) acted like Michael was an idiot! I think, because I've seen it time and again, that he just knows how to really LISTEN to his horses. I was amazed and thrilled to see Chelokee win Saturday after such a long layoff ~ I guess Michael knew where and when to place him.

You cant believe what i found on Equibase. On the entries for 4-1-08 there is a gelding running at Will rogers downs near Tulsa bred by Lael stables. He is running for a $3500 tag. he has won over $100,000 in his career. He is very much at risk. I wonder what the Jacksons would do if they knew. He is a son of Gilded Time. jen

THERAPY HORSE STORY -

Looks like NBC's Access Hollywood is covering/highlighting the story portrayed on Animal Planet's Petfinders. Great - hopefully the big network coverage will pull extra people to Animal Planet.

NBC Coming up momentarily here in the midwest. Then flip to Animal Planet at 7 Central for THE REST OF THE STORY . . .

STRATEGY FOR TUESDAY, APRIL 1

Congress reconvened on Monday March 31. As the effects of the Americans Against Horse Slaughter lobby days continue to linger, let’s make sure they know we are still here.

HRTV Inside Information - Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jn1T9aH-7mc&feature=user

[hotlink here: Posted by Debbie L.A. at March 31, 2008 5:21 PM]

And this is the text that accompanies the HRTV Video linked above, about the TRF horse prison rehab programs:

Throughout the country correctional facilities seek to rehabilitate prisoners as they serve out their terms of sentencing. To stem the tide of recidivism, some innovative prisons in Iowa and New York for are utilizing programs - in association with such organizations as the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation -- to teach prisoners through hands on instruction how to care for horses. In the process many of these hardened criminals find that not only are the horses lives changed for the better, but so have their own.

In Iowa, the warden of the Newton Correctional Facility has seen these changes first hand, "These guys all their lives have bullied or pushed their way to get what they want. So when they come down to deal with the horses, these huge animals, they can pull them all they want but the horse gives them what they're willing to give. So they have to learn other techniques in getting a horse to comply with what they want done, whether it's go right, left, stand still. So it teaches them another way to deal with animals then ultimately dealing with people."

Inmate Skyler Steenahoek at Newton has had his life transformed by the experience, "Personally, well I kinda made a mess of my life and it gives a chance to work with animals, learn something new... gives me an opportunity to learn a new trait. You learn empathy really quick down here when you see horses that are hurt and you give them care... it's really kinda emotional..."

Hiya, FsOB! Wouldn't it be nice if Congress would get down to business and vote on HR 503/S311? Exasperating and heartbreaking to think about that senior broodmare that Alex saw at New Holland today.... Well, the Hennegan Bros. film won't apparently be in the theatres in either CT or RI, but I am eager to learn how/when DVDs will be available for sale.

Lots of things going on since I last checked in. I'm taking notes.

Isn't it remarkable that horses get put to work and do such marvelous jobs? Therapy, prisons, border patrol, mounted police, etc.? Even visiting patients in hospitals.

I can't say what I want to here. You all know what's in my mind. And it is sprinkled with foul language. I'll behave.

Hello everyone,

Well, five lucky Minnesota Fans of Barbaro made the trip to Raindance Farms on Saturday, and I was one of them!

The drive time just flew as we were all talking, laughing and teasing each other. (Okay, MAYBE we teased Daryl more than we teased each other!) He’s so much fun!

With Leslie in MN behind the wheel, once we were in front of Raindance, we exclaimed, "That’s it!" First to greet us was Walker! Our hearts melted upon first sight of this wonderful and devoted friend to WindChill.

We all piled out of Leslie’s vehicle and next to appear was Kathi. She is no bigger-than-a-minute and has a natural and stunning beauty that only deepened with her words of love and sorrow for their WindChill.

As we were visiting with Kathi and throwing a ball for Walker, out of the barn strolls Jeff. And his cigar!

With his cowboy hat on, tipped slightly forward, he calmly introduced himself and we all stood chatting and introducing ourselves. And Walker chased the ball!

Jeff asked if we would like to meet the horses and go into the barn. When you enter the barn, you are greeted instantly by Bonnie, who is Layla’s Mom and WindChill’s ever-concerned friend. We were invited to visit Layla...

She is absolutely breathtaking! She has eyelashes that even Maybelline couldn’t produce and she knows how to use them! She is such a character, running from one end of the stall to the other, and I even think she was hoping for an audience!

She is everything to Jeff and Kathi. Everyone at Raindance is significant to everyone there, that is obvious. But Layla carries Hope. She brings Promise. She offers Peace...Peace of mind, heart and soul. She completes the circle...as Jeff mentioned.

While we were all in the barn, we presented them with the cashier's check to WindChill's Legacy from the Fans of Barbaro! The cashier's check worth...are you ready for this?!.... $1688.00!! Yes, $1688.00!

It was so cute, upon seeing the check for the first time, Kathi actually gasped at the amount! That was so good to see...

Jeff shook his head in what we're thinking was a moment of surprise... We heard "Thank you's" from both of them many, many times.

We walked towards the house and around to the back. Standing at the fences were more content and friendly faces. One of them being WindChill’s sire, Simmer.

Kathi explained that some of the horses were rescues and she shared their stories. The love and respect they receive at Raindance has brought some horses from the depths of despair and fear to the kind and curious souls standing at the fence, waiting for a treat.

Needless to say, the time passed quickly. When I was talking to Kathi back in the barn, Leslie in MN came around to me and quietly mentioned that we should think about leaving. I tried with everything I had to ignore her...But, I realized that Jeff and Kathi have plenty to do and we should let them to it.

Before we left, my little girl Montego was mentioned. (I had chatted with Kathi about Montego earlier.) And, in this latter conversation, Montego’s rearing was mentioned.

I shared that it does frighten me but now I am able to watch her while she is rearing up and she is quite stunning. And then...there it was! The mischievous glimmer in a cowboy’s eye! I was sooo relieved to finally see it, I could have cried.

Jeff mentioned with obvious delight that it is fun to be on a horse when they rear up. (Umm, I’d rather leave that to the experts...)

The Raindance Farms family is grieving. But they see and celebrate the positive in each day...such as Layla.

I know there is a little colt with wings who stirs the thoughts of inspiration within Jeff and Kathi. HE is lifting their hearts to new and, to them, unchartered paths.

Raindance Farms holds promise. In the barn there is a sign, "Enter as Strangers, Leave as Friends"

Jeff and Kathi, may I add..."At Raindance Farms, Love never ends."

________
So everyone, THANK YOU for your support and love for WindChill and his family.

And, the Minnesota Fans took the fundraiser total amount as a sign...from Barbaro!

1688...two eights and in the sixteen, are two eights! (Thank you Honey. Please let WindChill share a bit of your blanket. Yes, you can do some silly nickering for awhile...XXOOxxooxx)

Thank you everyone! We mentioned many times just HOW MANY Fans would love to have made the trip. They know. They know they are loved...

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!
And all love to the entire Heavenly Herd as you know you take me to where angels walk . . . .

So many beautiful and emotional posts here today . . . . . I'm also taking notes.
You all are really so the best!

NANCY IN CT and C.J., and all - many thanks for the posts and links about the "therapy" horses - taking notes here especially, thanks especially for posting.

PADME (LYN G.) - Aaaah, yes, the crocus, a welcome sight aren't they . . . . and, of note, since I'm just up the pike from you, the first daffodils are starting to bloom, too. The swelling buds nodding in the showers today. However, the "Misty Glen" narcissi that I planted in memory of Lost In the Fog are a later variety and still very tight in the bud. But the spring is coming . . . .

Holding hands, paws, hooves, feets . . . with all two- and four-legged of the Barbaro Nation.

FOR ALL: I saw a quote today that I thought was particularly beautiful and thought I would share here . . . .

"My treasures do not clink, they gleam in the sunlight and neigh in the night."
-- Ancient Bedouin saying

Peace, love, prayers to all . . . . .

always,

I too send out prayer requests for Erin and Anne.
The Comment Queen has given you a link to the pages where mom, Anne writes her journal. Lord, I wish there was a magic way to prop Anne up for the next coming days. Like she says, she has to find a way to get through time minutes at a time. Not a day at a time. As one of her doctors said, this little girl is "charting a new path" through this ocean of distress. God, this is just too much for one little girl and her family to go through.

Take a minute to think of them all, Anne, Terry, Momo and the two brothers...they need all our help. All our prayers.

Hi Alex.....I am so upset by your report of the
old broodmare at New Holland. What is wrong with people. They use an animal and when her "purpose" is done they allow her to be murdered. Is there some reason why we can not check TB tattoos through the registry and notify owners of the situation their horse finds herself in. If they do not help rescue the horse we could list the owners names on a Shame List.

Anyhow, I have been thinking of the old broodmare since reading your report. I hope against hope that someone saved her....and of course all the other nameless ones.

Good Morning Famblee,

I know it's been awhile since I've put on my cheerleading outfit, but I did this morning. Seems like it doesn't fit well now, I've lost a little weight and the skirt fell off...sooooo, I'll just sit here and not jump around; don't want to scare y'all. LOL

Many of us are talking about what to do with the Horses after we completely end slaughter. Every one of the ideas is a darn good one! But, there is an idea we haven't talked about in awhile, and, it's our idea (thanks to Harriette, Cal and a few others who had an idea and joked about it here in the days we used to joke a lot). That idea has evovled into the Barbaro Bunk&Breakfast.

The basic idea is this, we, the Friends/Fans of Barbaro save a little money and buy a big chunk of land. On it we build/buy a B&B style place to stay and provide homes to Horses of ALL shapes, sizes and breeds. We have lots of other ideas and all of them can be found on the DB in the Barbaro Bunk&Breakfast thread under Horse Rescue Issues. Please stop in, find it (bumps anyone?) and consider helping in one of our United Causes. (We don't want to make this seem more important than any of our other causes, it isn't.)

We have to care for our Horses after we end the horrors. This is just one way we may be able to do it. We only ask that you consider setting aside $1 a week if you can. Any ideas and support are just as welcome too.

Every Horse already knows of your love for them and they thank you.

NO Horse left behind or Ever Forgotten!

Horse patrol starting at airport

NORTHERN KY. PROGRAM RECRUITS VOLUNTEERS
By Associated Press

ERLANGER --Anna Zinkhon will get to take her horse where it hasn't been before.

Zinkhon, president of the board of directors of Northern Kentucky Horse Network, is one of the first to sign up for a program recruiting volunteers to ride about eight miles of trail on the perimeter of the area patrolled by the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport police department.

In its infancy, the program will certify up to 200 local riders to ride the trail at times of their choosing from dawn to dusk daily. The only exception is when the trail is closed, such as it is during a presidential visit.

"Several of us have signed up," said Zinkhon. "The trail is eight miles on the outskirts of the airport, and it's supposed to be really nice."

To become certified, a rider must fill out an application, pass a background check and attend a training session to learn what to look for. Riders also must check in and out with airport police before riding and after leaving the trail.

If they see anything suspicious, it's their duty to report it. And if they don't ride regularly, their badge can be revoked.

Airport police created the program to increase security in areas officers can't always get to. The program was inspired by similar volunteer horseback patrols at the Nashville and Houston airports.

"We patrol them as much as we can, but we don't get out there as much as we'd like to," he said. "So we designed this trail to look at areas we think we'd like more eyes looking at."

Word of the equine trail program has spread mostly through word of mouth, and Murphy said he's seen a lot of interest.

Because of the initial popularity of the program, there's already talk of extending the trial, which was created last year by riders from the Boone County Sheriff's horse patrol, Murphy said.

"We are getting a large response -- there's a great need for people who want to ride, and there's not a lot of trails in Northern Kentucky or Cincinnati," he said.
