Barbaro Updates: 548

updates are now here.

Update 3268: Positive news for the first two finishers of the Florida Derby: Big Brown Fine, Smooth Air to KY Derby.

Update 3267: Plans for the Dubai World Cup victors (thanks Sue McMullen):

DWC victor Curlin earns well-earned break

Curlin, the mightily impressive winner of the US$6million Dubai World Cup, sponsored by Emirates, will have a well-deserved rest before returning to the track for the second part of the year.

Trainer Steve Asmussen reported Curlin to be full of energy after his winning effort and said his class act would be sent to New York on April 2 to clear quarantine at Belmont Park.

On April 6, the four-year-old son of Smart Strike will be shipped to Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, where he eventually will resume light training on the Polytrack surface.

"From there, we'll plan a course for the second half of the year," Asmussen said, adding that he, Curlin's owners and assistant trainer Scott Blasi and exercise rider Carlos Rosas will confer about what they think would be the best plan for future races.

"It will be decided collectively and based on what's in the best interest of the horse and his legacy," Asmussen said of his star, who has come out of the race without any problems.

Sun Classique, winner of the US$5million Dubai Sheema Classic, sponsored by Nakheel, is bound for Hong Kong and the UK now.

"She's absolutely fine," said her trainer Mike De Kock this morning. "We will probably go the Irridescence route, and take her to Sha Tin for the Queen Elizabeth II Cup.

"She'll then spend the summer in the UK, with the rest of my string from Dubai, and we'll think about Royal Ascot, although that might be a big ask as we won't have much time.

"There are other races like the Nassau and Sun Chariot Stakes to consider, so we don't have to rush her."

De Kock enjoyed an incredible night to remember as he also saddled the first two in the US$2million UAE Derby, sponsored by Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group, Honour Devil and Royal Vintage.

"They both have come out of the races well and done us proud," he said. "We might think about some races in America with Honour Devil and Royal Vintage could be our Dubai World Cup horse next year."

Fellow South African winner Jay Peg, who landed the US$5million Dubai Duty Free, sponsored by Dubai Duty Free, is also bound for the same Hong Kong race and then possibly the Singapore Cup.

Terry Fripp, assistant to his trainer Herman Brown, said: "The horse is fine and he pulled out in great shape this morning."

Richard Dutrow Jr was also in double form, training the winners of the US$2million Dubai Golden Shaheen, sponsored by Gulf News, and the US$1million Godolphin Mile, sponsored by Etisalat, in Benny The Bull and Diamond Stripes.

Dutrow has a lot to look forward to as he also won the Florida Derby on Saturday at Gulfstream Park with Big Brown, who now will be a leading chance for the Kentucky Derby.

"They both came out of their races in good shape, they cooled out well and they're fine this morning," said Dutrow's assistant Michelle Nevin.

Both horses are scheduled to be shipped to New York on April 2, and will remain there with the rest of trainer Dutrow's stable.

"We haven't thought of any long-range plans," Nevin said. "It's going to take (Dutrow) a couple of days to just calm down from all the excitement. He was just so happy."

It is likely that Benny the Bull will be put on a path to get him to the Breeders' Cup Sprint (Gr.1), while Diamond Stripes could eventually be aimed at the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, she said.

Update 3266: Media reports of the two most impressive wins yesterday:

Dubai World Cup
Curlin romps by record margin
Curlin crushes competition on global stage in World Cup
Curlin Conquers the World

Florida Derby
Big Brown looms large for Derby
Big Brown Huge in Florida Derby Rout
Big Brown delivers dominant Florida Derby triumph

Update 3265: Big Brown dominated the Florida Derby overcoming the outside post and setting wickedly fast fractions in the process. A banner day for his trainer, who had two winners on the Dubai World Cup card, and a great day for horse racing in general.

Update 3264: You can watch all today's Dubai World Cup races here.

Update 3263: Another presser thanks to Sue McMullen:

Curlin crowned the best in the world

America's champion Curlin put his rivals to the sword when an emphatic winner of the Dubai World Cup, sponsored by Emirates.

Such was the sheer command and authority of his performance, his jockey Robbie Albarado can hardly have had an anxious moment as the US Champion travelled supremely well throughout the race, stalking the lead before the American rider let him go to the lead in the straight.

The race was over in a matter of strides as Curlin pulled clear of his toiling rivals to take the US$6million showpiece by seven and three quarters lengths without being fully extended.

There was a long fought out duel for second place between Johnny Murtagh on Asiatic Boy and another US challenger Well Armed and Aaron Gryder, with the runner-up spot eventually going to Asiatic Boy, but by then Curlin had flown.

AP Arrow finished fourth, but none of the others could get in a blow. The disappointment of the race was the Japan Cup Dirt winner Vermillion, fourth in the race last year, who finished last of all, with jockey Yutaka Take unable to offer any reason for the run.

Afterwards a delighted Robbie Albarado said: "It's a great privilege for me to be on him. What a horse. I just show up and ride him and get the glory but everybody works so hard behind the scenes and he does it all on raceday. It's easy when you ride a great horse like Curlin. He's not even tired."

Winning trainer Steve Asmussen was delighted with the win which he described as "awesome".

"He's spoiled us with his consistency and brilliance. Pre-race the horse was in great shape and he stepped from the stalls and just spoiled us again. Since his Breeders' Cup Classic win, he's shown us that he can do things quicker and I think he's proved that again tonight.

"For someone from a racing family to have the best horse in the world is really awesome. It's a dream come true," Asmussen said.

Success in the Dubai World Cup took Curlin's lifetime earnings to over US$8.8 million and he is unquestionably the best horse in the world.

Curlin will be shipped back to Keeneland on April 6 and no decision has yet been made on plans for the rest of the season.

Update 3262: World Cup Jockey quotes (courtesy of Sue McMullen):

Curlin, Robby Albarado: "It's a great privilege for me to be on him. What a horse. I just show up and ride him and get the glory but everybody works so hard but I am the one that's seen. He does it all on race day. It's easy when you ride a great horse like Curlin. He's not even tired."

Asiatic Boy, John Murtagh: "My horse has run a marvellous race and he fought and fought to get his second place. The winner is a monster."

Well Armed, Aaron Gryder: "He ran fantastic. He broke well and had horses on him the whole way and never really got a big breather. But at the same time he was relaxed doing it. We turned for home and he was able to sneak away a little bit and I saw Curlin on the outside of us. He fought as hard as he could for second money. He's just a very talented horse."

A.P. Arrow, Ramon Dominguez: "We were following Curlin every step of the way. We were closer to the pace than he usually is. The fractions were pretty quick and I'm sure that took a little of the run out of him."

Great Hunter, Garrett Gomez: "I was very happy with the way he was travelling. Just when we turned for home, the last 3/8 mile he gave me some good excitement. I thought I might have a chance to run them down. About the eighth pole he flattened out. He ran really well."

Lucky Find, Kevin Shea: "He ran a cracker. Two furlongs (400m) out I thought I would be fourth but the last 100m just found him out."

Jalil, Lanfranco Dettori: "He was too young. It was a year too early for him -- we will have to wait for next year."

Gloria De Campeao, Christophe Lemaire: "He ran to his very best. We were right there with Jalil who beat us last time so his run was good but just not good enough for here."

Premium Tap, Sebastian Madrid: "He doesn't seem as good as he was last year. He was never in with a chance in the race."

Sway Yed, Olivier Peslier: "He wasn't good enough in this class of company".

Kocab, Stephane Pasquier: "He's not good enough in this class."

Vermilion, Yutaka Take: "I didn't expect such a result. I don't know what happened to him. Connections have been really confident and well prepared for this race and I am sorry for them it didn't turn out better."

Update 3261: The Dubai World Cup was an exceptional showcase for horse racing at its best, with horses from around the world. Congratulations to South Africa for its three wins and also of course to the United States. Curlin, what can you say ? He won a terrific race with ease. I am a bit biased, but I think it was a great sporting decision to keep him in training as a 4yo and today was a small pay back for that decision. The day also highlighted (again) that US racing can hold its own on the world stage without the need for racing medication. Awesome show all around.

I did spend the morning at Fair Hill catching up with people. Another good friend (Andy Durnin) was also visiting so we got together and after visiting Fair Hill, Prizzios (breakfast) we went to watch the World Cup races. A great morning (It looked like Better Talk Now had traffic trouble when making his run).

Update 3260: Excellent racing today in Dubai (Spotlight shines on Curlin on Dubai World Cup day and Better Talk Now better be ready in tough Sheema Classic) and Florida (Florida Derby draws mix of experienced stakes horses, rising talent). HRTV and TVG are both carrying the Dubai World Cup, ESPN2 is carrying the Florida Derby.

HRTV takes its weekly look at the murky Kentucky Derby picture: Target Louisville: March 27, 2008.

A very nice story that could have developed very differently (second story): Medaglia d'Oro's sibling rescued.

---------------------------the ides of march
melting snow, seeds pushing up through iced rock

so the hot sand and wind will embrace the thunderous power of curlin
and many who line up for the call
splendid horses
as they get into their gates tomorrow
so far away on the other side of the world

well i hear them and i am praying with my ear close to the ground
for each one of them
..may they run safely
full of joy
and as i feel the strange crashing of wars some where far away,
in the night
airplanes crossing over and a helicopter
the cries of monks huddled in their temples being beaten starved
and punched tibet dripping in sorrow and
blood

how do people get so cruel

and tonight
along with buffalo bill;s struggle to gain his footing and strength
back with this world
comes the beeping of machines
in that hospital ward where little erin fights to deal

the swish of air conditioners and the soft padding of nurses shoes.
papers being filled
pumps being cleaned re set
her parents slumped by her beside or in the lounge

other parents drooping from lack of sleep and stomachs twisted taut
not used to hospital food
that kind of stale suspension of fear and waiting
and..wondering ..now what next?

dear erin

know we are praying for you
.may god lift your pain and ease fully hold you
as you sleep
.may the answers come gently and softly
kisses on your fevered cheeks

angels are being called to your side
billowy golden colors of purple and pink
and star dust drifting in from a tiny crack in that fancy window sill

we sit with you
as we sat in Barbaro;s stall
night after night
as his fevers raged
the straw
the manger of windchill;s journey
walker the arch angel dog guarding his every breath
and the deep kindness articulated
in so many ways

by hundreds of fans of barbaro
whether in song by cj or poetry and imagery by jock for hire
or so many silent ones that make the circle so deep
from the mists of oregon to the woods of new jersey

the congressional call list for us in ny..and
daryl;s constant vigil in congress and the sense that somehow
we will prevail

i am so sorry for your loss in your family
..for this cruel blow
to lose someone so wonderful
in order for someone else
to be free

billy;s sacrifice
now he is cut out of stars into the dark velvet sky

for these sorrows
there are such joys we hold
and maybe take for granted ? just a little bit?
..i cant imagine the brutality of a govt that shoots on command anyone
..and i can walk to the beach and see the sky and play my radio and
call my friends and bake cakes and laugh the subways and march in
the streets---

and scream out--

so i can breathe freely
openly
be who i am -----
that is what i hear
the wind carrying tonight.
.these cries from far away
and these whispers and these hopes and wishes for light
and darn it

the pure exaltation of running running-------------------

REPOSTING KATHY'S POST FROM LAST NIGHT ANNOUNCING WHAT THE STORK BROUGHT THEM JUST PAST THE STROKE OF MIDNIGHT!!! (What must miss sophie think of all this?)
*************************************************
BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT!
My girl Joy had her baby! Between midnight and 1am. She never broke a sweat. It is a boy, as we were beginning to figure. He looks to be black to gray, hard to tell right now. He has a stocking, and a small sock, and a perfect little white star. We think his given name might be Noble's Star of Joy, but we're not sure yet. Still need a barn name.
Momma and baby seem fine. Baby has found the dairy bar with no problem. Vet will be out in the am, and I will update then.
Happy Saturday to you all!

GREAT STORY WITH A BIG HIT FOR ALEX, THE FOBS AND ALL HORSE LOVERS...A(posted up top, but I was jest thinkin' that this is easier for those of us who are Morning Challenged.
*****************************************************
Medaglia d'Oro's sibling rescued

Cappucino Kid, a half-brother to popular freshman sire Medaglia d'Oro, has been rescued from a Washington state feedlot, where he was awaiting shipment to slaughter. He's now safely on his way to the Old Friends equine retirement haven in Georgetown, Ky., thanks to the helping hands of the horse rescue operation Save Our Slaughterbound Equines and a group of horse lovers who met on the Internet.

"We're still working on all the details," said Old Friends founder Michael Blowen. "SOS Equines in Washington found him and contacted us, and we're working on transporting him now."

When SOS Equines found Cappucino Kid at the feedlot, they quickly raised $570 in donations from members of Alex Brown Racing, a website that has become a forum for anti-slaughter racing fans, Barbaro followers, and horse lovers. The rescue group purchased Cappucino Kid for $425 and is applying the balance toward his care until he ships to Kentucky.

Cappucino Kid, a 10-year-old Pioneering gelding out of Cappucino Bay, won 10 of 44 starts and earned $248,951. He won his debut at Fairplex Park in 2000 and finished fourth in the Sunny Slope Stakes at Santa Anita in his next start, but he spent most of the rest of his career the claiming ranks. He ran throughout California and finally competed in his last race at Grants Pass Downs in Oregon, where he finished second for a $2,500 tag.

The bulk of Cappucino Kid's "bail money," $425, came from Linda Madsen of Portland, Me., who also has her own adopted ex-racehorse, Moyo Simba.

"I'm a big, big fan of Medaglia d'Oro," she explained. "I've visited Medaglia d'Oro many times and loved him when he was running. I just felt compelled to save his brother. He was due to go to Mexico to be slaughtered on March 27. I just couldn't let that happen."

###FANTASTIC STORY ABOUT MEDAGLIA D'ORO'S BROTHER'S THE RESCUE!!!

Rescue is my thing--providing good homes for these lucky horses (and helping those who have the time, room, and resources to provide those homes) is the next step.

Speaking of rescuing the famous, Tranquility Farm site (tranquilityfarmtbs.org) has a picture of Isabel's Pearl. I realize that for most of you, this is old news, but I get a big charge out of it anyway.

I wish I could take in another horse, but with my part-time job (which is turning into more hours per week than I really wanted, I really can't do it. Yet. I donate time and money, however (one of the benefits of working more hours per week than I really wanted when I signed up for this job ;o), and I cheer with every rescue.

A FANTASTIC way to start my Saturday!

###Thanks Alex, for all you do AND for the wonderful story this morning.

Safe travels to all and prayers to those who are in need.

JOE ON SATURDAY IN THE WEST WING....
**************************************************
Saturday, March 29th... I am running late. I wrote 3 paragraphs moaning and groaning, and then realized this is not my style. Zap. Thank goodness for a Delete button.

Since 2004 I have been doing the morning journal, and I focus on positive because all around is negative. I like writing to you about successful adoptions. Horses saved, horses given a new chance, and all the young girls who adore them.

Rumors were floating around about on line petitions asking for horse slaughter to return to America. So many hungry horses with no where to go. And then came rumors of a slaughter house opening later this year in Carson City, Nevada. Which is a 2 hour drive from us. I dismissed all this as nonsense. Nevada is a progressive state, growing in population more than any other state, and they would never allow this. Just so much junior high school drama. There are folks who lite the fuse, just to see fireworks.

But yesterday on the phone a friend who works with wild mustangs in Northern Nevada tells me a site in Carson City as already been picked out. She says the new slaughter plant will be owned by someone from a foreign land, and I cannot tell you how much this pisses me off. Someone can come here from another country and kill our horses. What is wrong with America? Why was this ever allowed in the first place?

So I wake up grumpy, because if Carson City is allowed to open then the hard work of thousands go right down the toilet.

I know there are hungry and neglected horses everywhere. But when you live with horses the last thing you want is for other horses to suffer the brutality of slaughter. You can only imagine the terror. Better a gentle needle and a hug goodbye. Slaughter is what cave people did a million years ago.

I sit in the middle and watch those with huge hearts try to help. Yesterday was bananas for Northern California chat rooms. Horse killer Wade Giles phones to say he has a beautiful young gelding with a deep laceration above his knee. The cut is too old to stitch. I phone Holly Meeks, who goes to a chat room on Yahoo and asks for help. This was at 9:30 yesterday morning. At 12.30 Ryan Andrews was loading the gelding into his trailer, and at 1:45 the gelding was at his new home, being treated by a vet. Holly raised more than $600.00 in less than 4 hours.

In the same chat room, a filly from a fancy barn in Petaluma found a new home with TaterTots in Walnut Creek. Stephanie Diaz provided the transportation.

Yesterday Cathy and I said goodbye to Shawna, a mare who came to us for just a little while. Shawna was purchased from a not so nice situation, and now she is at her permanent home at a boarding stable in Davis. Also yesterday Riggins left us for tall green grass at a foster home in Orangevale.

I wish all of you a very Happy Day. The last weekend in March. There are schooling shows and trail rides. We might be a balmy 64 degrees. Cool and cloudy right now. The coffee is from Tulleys, and warm pastry with melted butter was made by Costco. My wife Cathy says another gear old man. I hate it when she calls me old man. In the mist of all that is bad, Cathy says find another gear and move on.

I wish those Sacramento Kings would find another gear. They lose again, so Cathy and I might move to Cleveland.

Joe

When you request a picture, it will take about 9 or 12 days for the picture to appear. Depending on how many up to date pictures I post.

All 4 below are by request.

Top left: Several requests for a current picture of Porky Pig, and here she is. The smartest animal on our ranch. Porky has lived with us for 9 years.

Top right: The thoroughbred mare Frenchie. She made gobs of money as a race horse, and this year she turned 13.

Each year we go with friends to the Yolo Fair in Woodland. Lots of good junk food.

Bottom left is Cassandra with her favorite corn on the cob.

Bottom right is Dakota with cotton candy. Melts in your mouth.

OK: WHAT is that rumor about a new frakking slaughterhouse in NEVADA?? NONONONO>

Who can find out about this? Might Stephanie know?
O god. How much more can we manage... I have been saying for a while that I will become an arsonist in my old age...

This just cannot happen. Is there an FOB from Nevada besides the MHR peeps? They have enough to worry about....

Alex: is there any way you can find out about this
Nevada HS rumor?

Hello everyone - just checking in.

Barbaro is in third place on the candle site.

I know limiting the candles we are able to light is frustrating for those of us that light candles of rememberance - but please don't let the restrictions, or frustration, stop you from lighting candles for him. Barbaro's spirit of inspiration is the reason many of us are on this site - the reason many of us have received such gifts in our lives.

I realize the candles are only a symbol - but they do signify rememberance - and I think the moments of quiet while writing a message for him remind us of our connection - to him and to each other.

Love you forever Barbaro

Hay guys! Thanks for the well wishes. Mr Horse With No Name is good. For now, he is a black/grulla/silver kind of color...very funky. So much more delicate looking that Sophie was. Totally all legs. He has one little problem, and the vet thinks he will be just fine. There is a name for it, and duh me can't remember it, but he has a hock issue on one leg. The tendon basically isn't tight enough. The vet says they mostly get over this on their own, the more time outside ramblin around, the better. So, of course, it is raining, and we put them away for awhile. Joy is a VERY attentive mom, but she does let you near him. So, we are back to hunting a suitable name, and I need to catch up on what's going on. Edgar had a winner, and maybe Erin Brennan is better? I will read later.

TTYL, and thanks again.

Maybe I see this differently but with the DRF telling how CK was rescued--I think it gives a brighter outlook to rescues. Maybe some trainers who have been so quick to call the KB's will think a second time now. Good will and publicity never hurt anyone or thing. And now lives can be saved.

We read recently that Curlin's owner, Jess Jackson, wanted to prove Curlin was a great Horse and to that he had to run as a 4 year old. Well, Curlin just stamped himself one of the all time Greats!

LOVED the comments Alex posted up top from the jockeys in that race - THANKS ALEX!

Did see Edgar Prado win the second big race from Dubai, right on the heels of his win in the first with Diamond Stripes; missed the name of his horse in the second race, sure you all know about that by now.

Got the automatic programmer set for ESPN2 for the

##########
Been away from the puter for a while, watching TVG while hunkered down in my sleeping chair covered with cats, waiting for the vet to call with blood test results for my default lap cat, Foxy, who scared me to death with bloody projectile vomiting early Friday morning. Nothing showed up in the blood work. Looks like some kind of abscess blew, accounting for the horrorshow I witnessed. (Reports of this latest cat saga are on the My Girl Pearl thread at the DB.) Hoping the apparently happy ending continues as such. No masses or blockages evident from yesterday's X-rays. Whew! Foxy is very special to me; a friend of mine found him and his littermate brother Joely crying beside their dead mama in a Chicago alley on August 23, 2003; I had just that day gotten doc's permission to drive after removal of the body cast 4 months after my first broken back, so lightning would have smote me down for sure if I hadn't agreed to take them in for bottlefeeding. Couldn't get their poor little sister to nurse and lost her the second day, but the two graybaby boys are among my closest heart-cats. Don't anybody start a candlesite for Foxy please; if anybody wants to light a candle for him, we're using Pearl's candlesite for that purpose.

http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=eng&gi=pearl

And a final FYI for my FOB friends who've been privy to my cat travails of late - April's blood sugar levels have dropped nicely after a month back on insulin and we have reduced the dosage; and Blue's upper respiratory congestion/sneezing has responded amazingly well and quickly to steroids and a different antibiotic. I now have FOUR of my nine cats on twice daily meds - and one of Foxy's has to be given ONLY on an empty stomach, which complicates matters somewhat; he gets that one 2 hours after the other med and a meal. The other cat on meds is Louise a/k/a Wheezy, an aged TBarJ barncat who moved in my catdoor the first frozen winter I lived at the barn, whose thyroid imbalance is controlled by a specially compounded earcream that I get not from the vet but from a drugstore.

As Gilda Radner used to say - and it is the title of her autobiography - IT'S ALWAYS SOMETHING! To which I add, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

MORE LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH . . . .

TIME IS RUNNING OUT TO HELP CONGO, the NJ dog under death sentence for protecting his family - next court date just around the corner, April 4.

crossposting excerpt from the DB, Congo's thread in the General - non horse Folder, message 20847.162 -

If you have time, please send a quick note to the judge - if you can brief and call/email the governor- they don't even ask your name or where you're calling from.

Thank you, Daphne

Please write Judge Mitchel Ostrer, polite and professional, letters of support for Congo.

MITCHEL E. OSTRER- (direct phone number - 609-571-4188)
Mercer County Courthouse
209 South Broad & Market Streets
PO Box 8068
Trenton, NJ 08650

Mention in your letter or phone call that he needs to take into consideration that the laws are old and they don’t take in to consideration how the dog perceived the threat. Also, there is no case law out there in NJ that has interpreted the statutes. This is the first one. Another point to use is that the last case of a dog attack was back in 1994 and the Governor then, Christine Whitman, had pardoned the Akita and he was exiled from the State. This is a last resort option so we can keep him alive.

Also, please contact Governor Jon Corzine at 609-292-6000 and ask the governor to pardon Congo. You can also email him at:

http://www.state.nj.us/governor/govmail.html and where is says- Select a Topic choose- “Law and Public Safety” and select a Sub-topic, choose- "Pardons and Clemency" and fill in your information to send a note to him. You don't have to live in New Jersey to call or email our governor. [end cross-post from DB]

There's also a petition for Congo, link is in post 113 of Congo's DB Thread. Please do something to help him. THANKS ALL!

All appears well at MHR and Legacy. Georgia is napping. Over at MHR, there is stall cleaning going on across from Jerri and Apple. The two of them are scrutinizing the activity, probably saying to each other, "Look at the mess those kids made over there".

I just looked at Joy's baby again. His color is really pretty. And the blaze on his forehead reminds of a plant, Indian Plume.

Gulfstream Awards Barbaro Scholarships

Gulfstream Park, in conjunction with the University of Florida (UF), announced the names of this years three recipients from Gulfstream Parks $30,000 Barbaro Scholarship Program March 29.
The Florida Derby Scholarship is awarded to two fourth-year UF veterinary students committed to a career in equine medicine and surgery.
This years winners, each of whom will receive $12,500 to apply toward their student loans, are John Weston Davis of Micanopy, Fla., and William Ben Stoughton of Gainesville, Fla.
The Barbaro Scholarship is awarded to a UF graduate student in equine veterinary research. The 2008 winner is Dr. Clare Ryan, also of Gainesville, and she will be awarded $5,000.
The Barbaro Scholarship Program is designed to provide financial assistance and professional mentoring, through the American Association of Equine Practitioners, to students pursuing a career in equine medicine and surgery.
The health and safety of the Thoroughbred(s), and those who ride and take care of them, is of paramount importance to Gulfstream Park and Magna Entertainment Corp., said Gulfstream Park President and General Manager Bill Murphy.
(Barbaros) injury served as a call - not only to the veterinary community, but also to all who love the Thoroughbred and make a living in the racing industry - to do all we can to promote research that will one day lead to the kind of medical developments that will preserve the lives of these wonderful animals. We congratulate this years winners and we look forward to their future contributions.
We would also like to thank our track veterinarian, Dr. Mary Scollay, for her tremendous efforts in helping to get this program up and running.
Dr. Scollay said, This scholarship program will be an immense help to young people. The monies contributed by Gulfstream Park and Magna Entertainment will be invaluable to those students who have shown leadership qualities as well as ability and aptitude in the medical aspect of this career.

###Good Sunday morning to all--after two days of raking, hoeing, scooping, stooping, bending and being out in the wind (which I refer to as "Nature's dermabrasion" because when I wash the dust off my face and apply toner, it STINGS so good ;o), I find that I can move with relative ease. Arms and shoulders sore, but my barn area is weed free and those of us who worked at Under the Angel's Wings Rescue near Phelan, California, helped make Courtney's place "weed freer" and all the fallen cottonwood trees are cut into pieces and stacked neatly here and there.

A good feeling, "giving" like that.

###Big Brown!! I laughed when I looked him up on Pedigree Query. I said to myself, "With a name like that, he's probably bay..." and he IS!

But gorgeous! I think I have found a KY Derby favorite. Thanks, Alex, for the links to his press releases.

###And thank you for all you do. Enjoy Fair Hill and tell us all the news (that's fit to print ;o)

###Good day, all. Safe racing, too.

the Brennan's need LOST OF PRAYER. With Erin, it's either hell from the symptoms/pain, or it's hell from the meds...there just have to be a way to find a middle ground for all of it. She's such a good kid.

George still has furious Big D...that's about all I know about that. But there were posted some amazingly beautiful and touching of Belle and George laying down last night, and George finally succumbing to sleep with her neck and head looped over Bell's neck, close to her face... very moving.

Safe rides to all today, Alex, enjoy your respite at Fair Hill...keep safe all new babies and expecting moms...we began the day at 12 degrees.

JOE ON SUNDAY:
************************************************

Sunday, March 30th... A beautiful gray filly comes to us later this week from a race track in Los Angeles. I only mention this because her sire is Holy Bull. And my friend Ben Jensen is nuts for Holy Bull.

Also 2, and maybe 3 thoroughbreds will come to us from a feed lot in Wilton. Transportation has been arranged. One of those thoroughbreds is said to have strangles, so we will isolate the entire trailer of horses at another barn.

A thoroughbred mare will come to us from a feed lot in Vallejo, and there is a racing tattoo which says she is 7. On the phone horse killer Brent Sanchez says the poor mare is skinny and lame. Transportation has been arranged.

Horses up and down our driveway. The other day I showed you Whisper, a gelding who we purchased from horse killer Manny Phelps. Kelli is 14, and she lives in Davis. Cathy and I have known Kelli for several years. This was our phone conversation:

Oh my God Joe, he is the one.
What one?
Whisper is the horse for me.
You only saw his head on my website.
Oh my God Joe, can I come over Saturday afternoon?
Only if you quit saying Oh my God Joe.

Kelli walked Whisper all around our yard. She saddled and sat, and Whisper has perfect manners. On her bright pink cell phone Kelli, with mom Nora giving approval, reserved a stall at the fancy barn where I earn huge amounts of money shoveling poop. Which means I still get to see Whisper 4 days a week. A stall will not be available until April 5th. Ryan Andrews provides transportation.

Adolfo can fix anything, including broken fences, and so yesterday our fence in the far north field was replaced. Earlier this week a big piece of farm machinery broke lose and put a huge hole in our fence.

Yesterday morning feeding breakfast, and there is a tall gelding we call Lifer, because he is sentenced to Life on our ranch. Lifer has never liked any of my old ranch trucks. He has destroyed mirrors and kicked in doors. He is a Lifer with us, because who else would put up with him? So Lifer runs in front of my truck and fires. Kicks in the front grill. And then he comes up and begs for a carrot. Puts his face in my huge belly and waits for the itchy part of his ears to be scratched. Lifer is goofy.

I raked all the poop in the north field, using old fencing, but the fencing fell apart and so did the poop. Instead of disappearing, the poop turned into tiny little balls that now decorate our field. We are a class act. Neighbors quickly put out their For Sale signs.

And that about sums up the last Saturday in March. There was chicken in the crock pot, with roasted potatos, carrots, and aspargus. Fresh buttermilk biscuits from Pillsbury. Late night barn check came at midnight, and it felt like January. So cold Porky Pig snuggled under an old horse blanket. Pony Boy cuddle with the little filly Radiant Gal. 110 horses, and finally it was quiet. Later today we could be 64 degrees, with rain for tomorrow. Already 3 months are gone this year. Major league baseball begins this week. Holly Meeks stood in line hoping for a shot at Deal Or No Deal. And at a schooling show in Sacramento, Wonder Dust refused to enter the ring. Jennifer Wright says Wonder Dust turned and went right back to his trailer. Wonder Dust came from our ranch. Stardom is not for him. Top prize was a ribbon. I told Jennifer Wonder Dust is probably waiting for the events that pay money. Jennifer loves him like crazy...

Joe

Top left Adolfo must tear down the long line of fencing, put in new fencing, and pull it tight.

Top right shows a job well done.

Bottom left is what Lifer did to my old ranch truck.

This past week I showed you a head shot of Poteens Rambo, a new gelding from the race track. Immediately there were more than 20 e-mails and phone calls asking for a picture of his entire body. Well here you go.

Mike, you certainly have a wonderful attitude, and reading the article and looking at the pictures brought home to me "up close and personal" just what our military families endure with the loss of a beloved one...

Having the Patriot Guard in attendance was such a moving tribute ~ looking at their faces, I can't help wonder if they are Nam vets who didn't receive their proper due when they came home...

Blessings to all the Neil/Cozzi family for peace and acceptance.

Hi Gang,
Church this AM and I heard nothing, saw no one. Just zeroed in on everyone that needs prayers here. I was in the God Zone, pleading with him.

Then I stopped at the store and got a Cadbury Fruit and Nut Bar for breakfast.

Then I stopped to check the horses, making sure those kids are taking care of them while the mom is floating on a boat somewhere in the Carribean.

The yard poo is all cleaned up, (nice and dried out now, Jonna), now I'll vegetate the rest of the day.

Where can I find the pic of Georgia and Belle laying down together? I checked them late last night and they were both sleeping, but not together.

Thanks Kathyb, those pictures are just adorable. And what a little pesky baby that Georgia is.

Gang, please don't misunderstand my above comment about mom cruising the Carribean. In my house, feeding the animals comes first, me second. After all, we humans have turned the animals into platelickers. The lady on the cruise will forego buying dog food and hay, many times, if her needs aren't met first.

Just how I feel. Hope it didn't offend anyone.

March 30 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Innocent people tend to fall in line behind a person with the magical quality of arousing devotion---even when they do not see the ultimate destination. They simply follow. Their glee in being in a parade makes it seem to bystanders that they are left out if they don't follow too. As painful as it is to admit it, this is the vanguard of massive ignorance. Know what the parade is all about. How sad if we thought we were in the line to get freedom and discovered we were in the slavery line. We have to think for ourselves, as words deceive us unless we know what they mean. Our enemy is not always flesh and blood, but a do lo nu he di, which means deceit in Cherokee, and trouble in any language. Make it a point of knowing what and who can be trusted. There are many sources but only one Great Spirit.

Too many have strayed from the path shown to us by the Great Spirit.

Sequichie Grandfather [end of email]

Gosh how I love the wisdom in these daily messages - and IMO this little phrase in particular struck a chord in me:

Know what the parade is all about.

All,

Congo's appeal hearing is Friday, April 4th.

Monday (tomorrow!!) will be the last day to sign Congo's petition. If you haven't already signed, please do so- there are only 170 signatures on the petition to save Congo's life!

http://www.petitiononline.com/gcd01/petition.html

Also, please consider sending the judge an EMAIL in care of his Team Leader, Michael Stellwag. We don't have Judge Ostrer's email so we can send our note to Mr. Stellwag and ask him to forward the email to the judge or print it and give to Judge Ostrer- our notes should be polite and respectful, after all, this is the judge that will be deciding Congo's fate.

michael.stellwag@judiciary.state.nj.us

Keep calling/emailing the governor.

Also, please contact Governor Jon Corzine at 609-292-6000 and ask the governor to pardon Congo. You can also email him at:

http://www.state.nj.us/governor/govmail.html and where is says- Select a Topic choose- Law and Public Safety and select a Sub-topic, choose- "Pardons and Clemency" and fill in your information to send a note to him. You don't have to live in New Jersey to call or email our governor.

Robyn and the rest of yole. Hell and damnation. Chief was doing do good on his rimidyl. For 3 days he was like a puppy again. However, on thursday night all hell broke loose. His whole stomach crashed. Up all night letting him in and out to poop. About every 30 minites. called his vet early friday morning and she came to the house and gave him a shot and he is on centrine, sucralfate and flagyl. He is doing much better today. He sleeps a lot from the pills. He thinks he has hit the jackpot. For a week he is on Hills prescription dog food. He gets a can twice a day. He loves it and almost eats the plate. The problem is he will get his arthitis back fairly quick. He is so good. He has never had an accident in the house in the 12 years I have had him. All night thursday night he raced to the door full speed. Maybe the vet can put him on something for his arthitis. It was so nice to see him jumping on the bed. etc agaon. jonna, what do you suggest? ###what is this about Nevada? I did see Big Brown win yesterday. ###lynne, Chief says he still loves you but he better stay here as his vet is a block away. So far my vet bill counting the hip x-rays ans this weeks episode had run almost 400.00. I dont know what Discover means but my mommy says I am worth every penny.

Posted by: Margie at March 30, 2008 10:20 PM

Sandra, my Lucky is 13. He is on thyroid meds. He has some arthritis. He sleeps a lot. And I let him. I keep him warm, and I really monitor his activities and keep the other dogs away. Lucky is pretty weak also. When he has digestive problems, he'll get a cup of boiled rice, no salt, pepper or butter, mixed with a little canned for flavor. (I monitor his stool too). Usually I can see trouble coming. I always mix rice in his food, and increase it according to what I see coming. I don't know if that will help any.

Posted by: Margie at March 30, 2008 10:30 PM

jonna, somehow I missed what happened to Loretta. It has been wild here for a few days. What was wrong? So glad to see today that she is better but I dont know better from what. ###somehow I dont think my computer received anything for a couple of days. Then today on Equine Heaven they had Rosie. Is that our Rosie,? Yole, catch me up on stuff.

Posted by: sandra at March 30, 2008 10:39 PM

Hi, Sandra
sorry to know that Chief has had such a bad time on Rimadyl. You might ask your vet about glucosamine/chondroitin. Virtually harmless, no side effects and the stuff works wonders for virtually all species. Plain ol' glucosamine is not as effective as the combo. Many food manufacturers are putting in their "senior" formulas now, but it's not known if the amount that is in the food is as effective as adding TO food. Worth a try??

XXXXOOOO to you and the Chief

Loretta had one of those wake-you-up-out-of-a-sound-sleep "events" that requires a lot of guess work and many tests...i first thought stroke. she couldn't use her right legs properly, but did go out/poop/pee and came back in and took a biscuit from me. This is The Test. (Ok, if they eat a biscuit, we're not talking imminent death sentence.) Yes, another of my childish fancies....

anyway. in an hour she was totally normal. Took her to the Vet that afternoon. She's all good. Who knows. I have had greys have en event like this (well, NOTHING like this--it gave me the classic cotton mouth in about 2 seconds when her great, black eyes are asking me to HELP>)

I love all my hounds, but she is an atypically feisty greyhound...and it was a wretched thing to see her go through.

God willing, never again.

####
You really must give him a try on Metacam. Get it from Entirely Pets.com and the big bottle will cost you HALF what your vet will charge.

(aT MY vET $120.00--from EP.com with shipping, only $57.)I swear by the stuff...have used it for all kinds of canine pain, and imho, it rocks. It also tastes kinda like maple syrup. They'll eat it right off the top of their food, of just squirted into their mouths...

Of course all dogs are different. But with at least 6 of mine, this stuff has handles the pain with 1X day dose, and NO GI UPSET> I've used it for wound recovery, bone cancer pain, arthritic complications like lumbar stenosis, broken toes...it's good stuff.

Good luck, and thanks so much for asking about Loretta. She is--as the NY scene says--"FIERCE."

I love her to distraction.

(Also, anyone with bad GI stuff going on: pure canned pumpkin, pumpkin, pumpkin.)

*CHIEF* Tell your MaMa to ask about Metacam....and tell here the 1/2 price place Aunty Jonna wrote about in post today t/s:11:30PM...ohhhhh, *CHIEF* I am so glad you are being 'Loyal' to your MaMa..she LOVES YOU TO PIECES!! Doesn't matter ONE BIT about 'extra' Nilla Wafers, Sweet Doggy...what DOES matter is that your Mom loves you and you love her and maybe the Metacam will work for you! I have been giving Murphy Glucosamine/Chondroiton MSM with Joint Lubircant, Equate brand, from Wal Mart for about a month now, Chief, and Murphy can once again jump up onto the bed:) Sometimes, he must go back farther and get a better 'start' at it, but he can do it now:) He doesn't LIKE having a pill put into his doggy mouth so much, but he KNOWS THE AMERICAN CHEESE WILL FOLLOW:) really QUICK:) so he tolerates it! I love you, Chief!!! I think you are certainly the BEE'S KNEES when it comes to DOGGY FRENS:)

Sandra...this Equate Glucosamine Chondroitin has a blue strip across the top of it's label which reads: Compare to Osteo Bi-Flex Advanced Triple Strength and Save...I give him one every morning with his cheese and four small Milk Bone biscuits...he only eats one of the biscuits..saves the rest for a little later in the day...give them a try too, just a supplement, doesn't interfere with any medications he might already be on...the Vet suggested it for Murphy...so far, Murphy doesn't have to take the 'heavy-duty' meds...thank goodness!

STRATEGY FOR MONDAY MARCH 30

Congress reconvenes on Monday March 31. As the effects of the Americans Against Horse Slaughter lobby days continue to linger, lets make sure they know we are still here. As we hear stories of a possible slaughter plant opening in yet another American state, we must get this federal legislation passed!!

We MUST maintain our momentum and remain relentless in keeping those phones calls and faxes ringing in Washington as well.

For the present time, we will be targeting Representatives. The magic number of co-sponsors that we need is 218. We currently have 196. This is very achievable based on feedback from the Americans Against Horse Slaughter lobby event and have witnessed the cosponsoring of (3) MORE Reps since March 1st. We specifically need help gathering the names of those Reps who you feel are close to cosponsoring HR503. Once we have this information, we can target this list and possibly see a quicker conversion for support. Please email all info on this directly to us through the DB on ABR. You can also watch for our extra target list that will come via email.

Please mention Americans Against Horse Slaughter when making your calls and remind them that we are a non funded, grassroots group of people from across the country brought together for the sole purpose of passing this legislation. It is important that they know we have NO OTHER agenda.

New to the 110th Congress: Please ask them to cosponsor HR503

Michele Bachmann MN Phone: (202) 225-2331 Fax: (202) 225-6475 Aide: Beau Rothchild

Sandra, Lucky is a golden retriever/black lab mix. We saw him and his litter mates being thrown from the back of a pick up on a rural dirt road. He was about 5 months old at the time. He was injured so we were able to rescue him. The other dogs would not come near us. I tried for days and days to coax them but they would have no parts of it. One by one, they disappeared. It was common practice for people to dump dogs and kittens over here for the coyotes to 'take care of'. Either that, or they would toss them off the 650' high Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. Nice, huh? Sometimes it is a 3rd world country here. Anyway, Lucky's issue is thyroid problems, and the myopathy, causing his brain and muscles not to communicate properly. He is in no pain, discomfort at times, but I make sure he has a peaceful environment and lots of rest. And warmth. He's OK, but subtle changes every day. I have a sling to assist, but he'll have no parts of it. My bed is on the floor so he can get up easily. And I have a high frame for his dishes, so they are at face level. It is difficult to think of the future, isn't it?

She's read all your wonderful posts and suggestions and is glad that most of you agree with what she already felt and got your second opinions. Made her more comfortable with her and her regular vets decision. They are gonna start on the same plan that she (vet) wanted her to do a few days ago. Tracey says to thank you all so much for your suggestions and responses.
She let Belle and Georgia out today for a couple of hours and they had a ball. That little Georgia ran her legs off exploring everything she could. I believe Tracey said it's about 3 acres and so there was tons to sniff on. lol As she already posted, she and her boyfriend followed them in their golf cart and that seemed to help Belle not to feel she had to run after her little one.
Things went so well today that tonight is Tracey's big nite. Remember the one she was gonna have after Georgia was born. Long bath, BBQ steaks, and HER BEER. I don't drink but I told her to have one for all of us too.
We still need to keep an eye on Georgia, but things are looking really good, so tomorrow she's gonna try to get rid of some post sites so we don't get lost on where to post. Thank you all from the Legacy Ranch for your continued support, well wishes, prayers and love.
It finally looks like things are gonna start going up hill from now on. We pray anyway. If anything doesn't look right please call but I'm only taking calls and will probably not be on line much.. Thank you all so much.
