Barbaro Updates: 547

updates are now here.

Update 3259: At last after 11 1/2 hours I have now arrived in the Fair Hill area, knackered!

Update 3258: April 1st Thoroughbred Charities of America grant applications are due.

Update 3257: A very well reasoned essay on all that is wrong with the pro-slaughter arguments on horse slaughter: Why the organizations opposing the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act are wrong.

Update 3256: A friend of mine works at Lane's End and showed me around Thursday afternoon. I had asked if I could come and visit one of their newest arrivals, Film Maker's Storm Cat foal. He was very cute. While there I also received a tour of their stallion roster, which included Curlin's dad (Smart Strike) and the venerable A.P. Indy. It was very cool to be among the elite stallions in the industry.

The Dubai World Cup on Saturday will be covered live by both HRTV and TVG.

After a 14 month break Brother Derek returns to the races this afternoon: Brother Derek makes his return.

Onwards with my journey, my hope is tonight I will arrive in the Fair Hill area.

Please keep calling and faxing and become a citizen co sponsor of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

Comments

If I am 1st, that means it is time for bed.

Have a great day, gang.

Make some calls today.

Good morning Barbaro, Alex and all F.O.B.'s. That must have been so cool to see all the stars of Lane's End! Travel safely, Alex! They will all be happy to see you at Fair Hill when you arrive! :)

FOBs:

keep a thought for us: nightmare time: car still at shop, will pick up later this morning, but at 5 am we had some (no definite symptoms for stroke OR seizure)SOME neuro-i-have-no-idea kind of event with the totally fierce and feisty greyhound, Loretta. Have her isolated in the big crate right next to where I sleep, and she's resting comfortably. no agitation, for instance...and she passed the Ever Faithful CAN THEY EAT A DOG BISCUIT? test....

I may have a stroke first. Went through a ton of internet stuff...nothing fits. SO I guess we will just try to go back to sleep (as if) and get up at usual time--8 am--barring any other freaky things/

Will get on phone to Vet as soon as they open--I could wake up the on-call, but why. she's practically normal now. Except for the totally foreign look in her eyes: WHAT IN THE HELL IS GOING ON.

Gotta go check out the panting: Lord be with us: jonna

Hiya, FsOB! Running late on this TGIF sort of day. Here's to a productive day and a superb weekend for all citizens of The Barbaro Nation. RMH

#### To all FsOB: If you would like to send an e-card to Erin Brennan, please go to www.nemours.org and follow the steps to send an e-card. It's easy and the selection is awesome. She could use some good cheer, she is in Rm. 3204 according to her MoMo's posting on caringbridge. ####

Got a Vet appointment with my favorite Vet in the practice for 3:20 this afternoon. Loretta: I have no freaking idea what happened. I watched her for 2 hours, of course, no make that 3 hours...

If she remain stable, we'll see Dr. C this afternoon and if not, they'll take her on an emergency basis.
I am a total wreak of course...

SO: in a holding mode.

Take deep breaths and try to relax to keep that ole BP down.

Alex, drive carefully and enjoy your stay at Fair Hill. Way cool that you walked among the champions.

Loretta ate her breakfast, went out to pee again, came in, licked out dishes which were not yet collected, and now, she's where she always maintains after bfast and during email/internet/puter stuff...

####
Padme:
I was sending her Reike for two hours this morning, she just kept taking it. SO we will take all the prayer and concern for her and thank all of you.
My hands are heating up just thinking of her now.

Even tho it's Fabulous Friday, we should still make some calls. Just go back through the lists from this past week and see who rings your bells.

You know, that video taken at Dallas Crown last year--those horses standing in pain, confusion little or no food and water, jammed together--that video, and knowing that they were slaughtered at the end of all the legal wrangling makes me just about crazier than the "graphic" videos.

It is truly terrible. Barb AZ posted it yesterday I believe. If that doesn't move you to call, then nothing will, IMHO>

Joe at TB Friends

Northern California chat rooms stay busy, raising money for horses in trouble. Later today a hungry gelding comes to us from Lodi. A student at Sacramento State made all the arrangements. And then on the phone she says Joe, we have never met, but if you do me this one big favor I will be forever humbled.

First time I have ever heard that phrase. Forever humbled. The student asks if the hungry gelding could live with Cathy and I, just for a little while, and could we also arrange shipping? Well okay then. The gelding comes to us today, and already he is named Beaner.

I would keep a list of horses in deep trouble, and at least twice a week I would ask (or beg) readers of tbfriends if they had space for one more. Please, oh pretty please. But the list continued to grow, and now it is ridiculous. How to even choose which horse to help, when there are hundreds, is taxing beyond belief. There are owners who threaten to shoot their horses. Or call the vet to put them down. Other horses stand in horrible fields with very little food. They are everywhere. And we are not talking about old, skinny bags of bones. Many are nice well bred young horses who fell into the wrong hands.

And this does not even count all the feed lot horses. All the auction horses. All the healthy horses that are coming from event barns.

Horses killers Wade Giles and Manny Phelps tell me they have never seen it like this. Both are turning down skinny horses, because they make more money with fat horses, and there is only so much room on the slaughter bound trailers. Manny Phelps likes to joke that maybe Paris Hilton will like him now, because he has more money than she does.

more to come

Gee this is not good news!

Please help by writing or calling Hawaii representatives and urge them to vote yes on S.B. 2895! Click on this link for contact information and more on this bill that is so important for the horses!

###I too signed the condolence book for S/Sgt. Neil. We cannot have a secure peace without a strong military, but oh, the price.

###Jonna, sometimes after an animal has "an episode," they are just as "embarrassed" about it and confused as anything else, which may explain her odd behavior immediately afterward. Fingers crossed Loretta is all right and she has something minor that just requires "tincture of time."

###Alex, my horse's sire, Eastern Echo, stood at Lane's End in the late 1990s. He then went to the Shamrock Stallion station where he died a few years ago--heart attack. Some day I would like to take a tour of all the big stallion farms and "stallion stations"--another friend works at a foaling barn for TB and SB mares.

###Tomorrow I am helping at a work day at Under the Angel's Wings rescue, which is just a few miles from my house. UAWR and its manager/owner have been mentioned often in the DB.

Those of us who show up "will work for food...and drink" (:o) and I'm bringing gloves, baling wire (yes, WIRE!), rake, hoe, shovel and my hammer, if I can find it. Rescues need more than food and money sometimes. Just the maintenance on fences and poop scooping is helpful.

I learned that from reading TBFriends ;o)

###Prayers to those in need and safe racing to all involved in that endeavor.

###And once again, thank you Alex and all for everything you do for us.

Posted by: KAY at March 28, 2008 3:32 PM

Hay, Jonna!!!

###
When you send Reiki (can I join in???), try to visualize her brain/nervous system being "rewired". Lord, I wish I was there to show you what I do...

###
Renee, please add my prayers to that family who is doing the most heartbreaking thing parents can do - bury the body of their child. Please tell them from me that if they listen to that small inner voice, they will also hear the voice of their baby telling them how grateful they are for having loving parents - even for a short time. Sometimes the babies only stay here for a short time and then go home to God. Its hard to understand why it happens this way...

###
Am doing some serious searching for a literary agent. It just popped up on the Internet (if they want cash, they're not legit...) and I'm going with it. Don't know why, but it may be time. Maybe this is my life-changing event (KD may have been right after all - darn him...).

I love all of you.

Good Morning Famblee.

As if slaughter isn't bad enough, what really riles me is the story of a customer at a service station, I believe in El Paso, who saw a trailer loaded with horses, and he stated that all of the horses looked like they had been beaten with baseball bats.

God forgives me because He knows it is OK to hate those perps.

THE REST OF JOE: AND WORSE NEWS THAN THE PRIOR NEWS FROM JOE. DEBBIE LA & ALL: this makes me want to tear my hair out. I swear.
*************************************************

Horse killer Wade Giles prefers to be called a horse dealer. He tells me every week there are new people earning money this way. You see all these free horses, or cheap horses, and it is like finding a dollar in the streets. Better than a regular job. If you can put a halter on a horse and load him into a trailer, you can be a horse killer. There is not an application to fill out. No bosses looking over your shoulder.

And now the chilling part. Horse killer Wade Giles tells me there are peope I know, people who I think are okay, who are now selling horses to slaughter plants in Canada and Mexico. They would be embarrassed if friends or family found out. So naturally they keep it a secret.

Who are they? This is driving me crazy.

Mike Baker tells me to walk my own limited road, and then go inside and enjoy the 47 inch big TV. Because the world is what it is. A person grows rich from exploiting animals, so the next person jumps on board.

From horse killer Manny Phelps I bought Whisper, and he comes to us with that name. Apparently Whisper was born in the back yard of a nice family. Mom and daughter were excited to breed their own, and raise the babies. But one day an ad is posted in a newspaper. Free Horses, come an get em. Manny Phelps had to make 2 trips. 15 horses he took from mom and daughter, and all have been sold to slaughter. Except Whisper. He is with us now. 40 cents a pound, plus shipping.

Out of hundreds of horses in trouble, how to choose the ones to help? Beats me. I only know that Whisper has potential. He is sweet and athletic. A combination which visitors look for when they come to adopt.

1 out of 15. A tiny dent. And for all of you in those chat rooms who help horses. For all of our friends who sacrifice their lives for the lives of horses. Mike Baker is right. The world is what it is.

Joe

Oops...

Top left oops: Ranch workers from down the street crashed their farm implement into our brand new fencing. As they turned the corner the hitch came off their trailer, and went right for our fence.

Top right oops: Every filly and mare on our ranch is in heat. Which drives fresh from the race track horses who are pumped up on steroids crazy. A race horse kicked the top rail of our mare motel. Kicked it so hard the rail landed 20 feet away.

Bottom left oops: While I am trying to repair the fence, field horses tear apart bales of hay on the back of the old ranch truck. How fun it is to reload surrounded by dozens of hungry horses.

Bottom right: Whisper arrived yesterday, and after watching farm implements crash into our fencing, and after watching race horses try to mount flirty fillies, and after watching field horses tear apart my old truck, Whisper is looking for the next bus out of town.

thank you all. Forgive that I am too exhausted to put all the names down. But you know who you are...and I bless you for the healing prayer/thoughts...

;;;;we will be at the vets this afternoon despite the fact that god looks after me and by fiat, i guess, Loretta--and that she is as if nothing tore MY little brain apart at 5am this morning. She's perfectly normal.

Repairs to the van were only $340. And God sent my Fairy Godfather, Roy, from next door with me to pay the bill...thank you God for looking after me. We will attempt a nap now.
###########
Margie: Yes, I think God catches up with the horse killers, the KBs, the PMU executives, the lovely people who work for Wyeth at a top level and continually turn their heads. Bet they have NEVER been on a PMU farm. And let's not forget the trash in the barns who cannot even be troubled to allow a kind word or a touch to those doomed draft mares.

OK: so I'm running on empty. Love to all: but wait:

JOY!
MAYBE BABY TODAY!! Hope you are feeling better on all fronts later in the day.
renee: what could be worse: and infant funeral. I used to work for a very expensive german doll company. We also sold exquisite doll clothes. It was company policy to Give baby doll christening clothes to parents who had lost an infant and called to ask if we had any doll clothes that would fit a dead infant...that blew me away. Free. This company did nothing for free. Amazing: a little mustard seed.

Good Friday Morning, ABR Famblee...

EGADDDDDS!!! So much 'bad' news posted here today....what's UP with all this 'bad' stuff?!

I barely have time to read...just 'skimming' the posts so far...I am SO 'zooming' and late at that:/

Renee: I'm awfully sorry for your frens losing thier infant child!! It is NOT supposed to be that way....NOT children going first! I'm sorry!
(((((((((((renee)))))))))))

Jonna: Loretta...had a seizure?! Murphy had one once...found out it was just due to low blood sugar...*shugar* in *SLEW's* dictionary:) He's never had another one....I will hold good thoughts that Loretta's was just a 'one time occurrance' as well!! Hang in there, Jonna!

Nancy in CT: I'll post a proper sentiment for the Neil Famblee when home again and not so 'scattered' in my brainnnnnnnn....thanks for the blue-lettering:)

Everyone....I'm VERY sorry if I've 'missed' ANY of you in this hurried post...I'll catch up MUCH later today....in fact, it will be evening in the East Wing before I'm able to do so....but I'll keep my WHOLE FAMBLEE in my conscious mind all day lonnnnnnnnng...

Joan Dillon: You 'out' there, Joan? If so, 'HI':)

Have a good one....it IS Friday, at least:)

NOON REPOST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI/AAHS

STRATEGY FOR FRIDAY, MARCH 28TH

Back by popular demand.....FREE FOR ALL FRIDAY. This is the day that you can go back over your lists and make that extra call to those that you feel are getting close.

Cheers,
Friar Tuck

Since we are targeting Reps (see below), we specifically need help gathering the names of those Reps who you feel are close to cosponsoring HR503. Once we have this information, we can target this list and possibly see a quicker conversion for support. Please email all info on this directly to us through the DB on ABR.

Right now we have a tremendous amount of momentum. We must keep that going and not let up. For the present time, we will be targeting Representatives. The magic number of co-sponsors that we need is 218. We currently have 196. This is very achievable based on feedback from last weeks event. Also, please call those you met with last week and say thank you. Ask if there is any follow up information they need.

Please mention Americans Against Horse Slaughter and remind them that we are a non funded, grassroots group of people from across the country brought together for the sole purpose of passing this legislation. It is important that they know we have NO OTHER agenda.

Remember, "WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE"...let it be heard!!

Thanks again for all you do!

Shelley and Debra

Jonna - or anyone?
I'm usually pretty good at navigating marestare but I didn't see that update on Belle - can you tell me where you found it? Prayers on their way for all in need, Erin Brennan, Tracey, Belle and Georgia - everyone.

Posted by: Joanne Frank at March 28, 2008 5:47 PM

I am hoping and praying that it's an honest mistake about Belle ~ I have "Latest posts from Tracey" saved in my favorites so that I don't have to navigate the Marestare board, and the last post showing is from yesterday when she took nasty poop samples from Georgia to the vet...
"Save her and not jeopardize the baby" sounds like an old post from when Belle was still carrying Georgia ~ I hope, I hope, I hope!!!

EXTRA FRIDAY 3/28 NAT'L TARGET LIST (HAHS)

Today's extra HAHS List now posted at the DB thread noted near the bottom of this post, and here in this Comment, below.

FIRST THINGS FIRST - Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311 / HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Senators who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Senator Mary Landrieu, sponsor and promoter of the Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their recently-released 2008 WHITE PAPER are in the DB thread noted below.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-459-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE SUGGESTION/CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE Prior HS History above the LIST OF LEGISLATORS below.)

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Friday 3/28/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

Friday 3/28 Extra HAHS List

Please post at this DB thread

####### ooops, my fingers did that - meant to say SHONA's Aunt - don't ever get to the old stables where Blackie lived, with the price of gas, so never see Pleasure anymore. My only active relationship with a horse these days is with Shona when I can get out to the old woods. Happy Birthday to Shona yesterday - she turned thirty. Great old Appie mare, belongs to a friend, and I have a part of a shareboard. (pics come up if you click on link under the pic that's up at my homepage, on my bluelinked name below.)

###### PS - feeling "all better" today - thanks for all well-wishes; you all know I must have felt rotten not to go out for music last night!

Guys ...I feel bad. One of my call group folks is setting up a HS booth at the UofA Horse Festival in NW AR...about 3+ hrs from here. I had planned for months to go but am having to be here due to my sister's health situ and family issues. She will have plenty of help but I just wish I could be there to support her. Please send them good thoughts as they push info and try and educate folks. I believe LeAnn is even going to have her rescued BBG there...Trixie. This way folks can look into the eyes of a horse that would have gone to slaughter. I believe this is the first such event where antislaughter info has been distributed here in the state. Here's hoping they have a sucessful weekend....Thanks...Tamme

It is a very complicated forum. Cheryl G knows her way around pretty well..the new thread is something like "Out of the Nursery." Then you have to find Tracey's last post and ask to see all of them...

I usually get in there and bumble along. As far as I know, the farrier is there just outside George and Belle's stall...

Anyone heard how Apple and Jerri are doing lately?

Posted by: joan roya at March 28, 2008 7:33 PM

Checking Belle and little Stinky Poop on Marestare a half hour or so ago, tails were swishing, Stinky Poop was nibbling at the door, probably trying to escape and cause a ruckous somewhere, then she did a head press against one of the beams. I guess she was playing 'Bulldozer Baby'.

Continued prayers for the both of them.

I'm glad you're better, CJ.

Posted by: Margie at March 28, 2008 7:36 PM

Thanks Nancy,
Thank goodness. I know Belle's hoof was acting up when they were at the hospital together after Georgia was born. But they put a corrective shoe on while they were there and she seemed to be getting around pretty well as far as you can tell. That site CAN be confusing because there are so many different places to look for information.
Please may I ask all of you to pray for Erin Brennan and her family. Erin is going through a really hard time in the hospital right now and she only wants Mommy. Which is only natural but Annie has been doing the 24/7 thing for a few days now and can't catch a break. So let's pray for Erin start to feel better.

Enjoy your reunion at Fair Hill. Glad you are "home"
safe and sound, if not exhausted.

link to Erin's site: Anne is writing herself tonight, not MoMo, and my heart just aches for them all...

This just HAS to turn a corner for smoother sailing soon for all of them.

For the night shift/West Wing...

YOU MAY LEAVE A MESSAGE HERE to express your sympathy to the family of S Sgt William R. Neil, Jr. (brother-in-law of our FOB Mike C)...Billy gave his life for his country in Afghanistan.

Posted by: Nancy in CT at March 29, 2008 1:02 AM

Jonna...LOL...I knew what you meant. The vet said he would come for sure Monday if Joy has not yet sprung the wee one. Oddly, she does not look nearly as uncomfortable as My Oh did with Sophie, and Sophie was right on time.

We need to come up with some boy names...does anyone want to play? Dad is "Noble", mom is "Joy", and they are Arabians. For a filly we are choosing between Noble's Joyous Grace, "Gracie", and Noble's Magnificent Joy, "Maggie". For a colt, we are stuck. Anybody have a suggestion?

Thanks...Kathy

I just read Erin's update- let's keep this special little girl and her wonderful family in our thoughts. They have been through so much.

Mike C.,
I'm so very sorry to hear your brother-in-law's passing. I promise SSG Neil, and your family, that his sacrifice will never be forgotten. I know you are proud of him. Without heros like SSG Neil, none of us are free. May God rest his soul.

NO Hero left behind or Ever Forgotten!

I am thinking, really, I am thinking of a boy name....tap, tap, tap.

Jonna, I met a rescued GH today. Her name is Lucy. I was stuck in parked traffic as they were rescuing a hiker out of the Rio Grande Gorge, which is 650' deep, only accessible for rescue by a chopper. And along comes a group of people with Lucy. I jumped out of my car, told them about you, while Lucy licked my pants and nuzzled up against me. This was my first encounter with a GH. Lucy is also a rescue.

Happy 10 months old birthday to Spirit at MHR.

OY
Yole, shoot me now...I AM SUCH A DOLT. Yes, KATHY! I did pull a post from 2007: I did not realize I had done this when I posted from Tracey this morning. I did not realize that they went thru this damned laminitis LAST YEAR TOO.

Too distracted by Loretta's situation, and totally knackered, I am so sorry to worry peoples...I wish Miss Tracey would post something today.
OK. I'll be quiet now....

Great day of racing tomorrow, will be watching TVG/HRTV before watching the Florida Derby. Praying all horses get home safe. Remembering Barbaro winning the Florida Derby from post 10.

Still here working daily for the horses but have been sidetracked this week due to the introduction of a horrendous bill in Florida which would basically allow the immediate (July 8) banning of certain breeds like pitbulls. It would result in the deaths of thousands of innocent dogs like my precious Nala (we would leave the state before that would happen) and I have been helping dog rescues mobilize people in the state to call. Will know soon if we succeeded in getting it stopped.

Have not had time to read posts, hoping for healing for all in need, humans and animals.

Happy retirement to Something About Laura, earned over a million, special mare.

Please join a state group if you have not already, the horses need you.

Hiya, FsOB! I hope that Alex's trip to MD has been a safe one, if he was "on the road again" today. An exhausting weeke, here's to a relaxing weekend, please. Last weekend I had a gasto-intestinal "bug". Argh!

#### To Renee: My condolences to your friends who've experienced the loss of their baby.
To Jonna: I hope that Loretta had no additional seizures today. You must be so tired.
To Margie: Beyond ghastly to think of seeing a truckload of beaten horses. I'd be on the side of the road on a cell phone, trying to reach someone, the State Police or an animal control officer. This country is going down the ethical toilet if this activity isn't stopped soon.
To everyone re. Belle: I am confused as to whether her foot has worsened or if there was an old post that was re-posted.
To Tamme: Healing thoughts to your sister.
To Joanne Frank: I just posed another e-card on www.nemours.org for Erin Brennan, whom I am assuming is still in Room 3204. What a hellish week this little girl and her family has had. It breaks my heart, especially her mother Anne's journal entry from this AM. Please, anyone who can spare a moment to send Erin an e-card free of charge, please do so. ####

Here--for the West Wing and the Night Shift--is the correct most recent post from Legacy Clydes...I offer again my mea culpa for posting the WAAAAY wrong post this morning.
Mostly good news, and a more positive sound to Tracey's tone. Sending out prayer that all keeps chugging for Belle and George.

---------------------------the ides of march
melting snow, seeds pushing up through iced rock

so the hot sand and wind will embrace the thunderous power of curlin
and many who line up for the call
splendid horses
as they get into their gates tomorrow
so far away on the other side of the world

well i hear them and i am praying with my ear close to the ground
for each one of them
..may they run safely
full of joy
and as i feel the strange crashing of wars some where far away,
in the night
airplanes crossing over and a helicopter
the cries of monks huddled in their temples being beaten starved
and punched tibet dripping in sorrow and
blood

how do people get so cruel

and tonight
along with buffalo bill;s struggle to gain his footing and strength
back with this world
comes the beeping of machines
in that hospital ward where little erin fights to deal

the swish of air conditioners and the soft padding of nurses shoes.
papers being filled
pumps being cleaned re set
her parents slumped by her beside or in the lounge

other parents drooping from lack of sleep and stomachs twisted taut
not used to hospital food
that kind of stale suspension of fear and waiting
and..wondering ..now what next?

dear erin

know we are praying for you
.may god lift your pain and ease fully hold you
as you sleep
.may the answers come gently and softly
kisses on your fevered cheeks

angels are being called to your side
billowy golden colors of purple and pink
and star dust drifting in from a tiny crack in that fancy window sill

we sit with you
as we sat in Barbaro;s stall
night after night
as his fevers raged
the straw
the manger of windchill;s journey
walker the arch angel dog guarding his every breath
and the deep kindness articulated
in so many ways

by hundreds of fans of barbaro
whether in song by cj or poetry and imagery by jock for hire
or so many silent ones that make the circle so deep
from the mists of oregon to the woods of new jersey
shelley and debra and so many
who have fought this anti slaughter cry
for ever
cristina who posts every day
the congressional call list for us in ny..and
daryl;s constant vigil in congress and the sense that somehow
we will prevail
it is written
the tender and the fragile will inherit the earth
in love for all

mike c.
i am so sorry for your loss in your family
..for this cruel blow
to lose someone so wonderful
in order for someone else
to be free

billy;s sacrifice
now he is cut out of stars into the dark velvet sky

for these sorrows
there are such joys we hold
and maybe take for granted ? just a little bit?
..i cant imagine the brutality of a govt that shoots on command anyone
..and i can walk to the beach and see the sky and play my radio and
call my friends and bake cakes and laugh the subways and march in
the streets---

and scream out--

so i can breathe freely
openly
be who i am -----
that is what i hear
the wind carrying tonight.
.these cries from far away
and these whispers and these hopes and wishes for light
and darn it

the pure exaltation of running running-------------------

BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT!

My girl Joy had her baby! Between midnight and 1am. She never broke a sweat. It is a boy, as we were beginning to figure. He looks to be black to gray, hard to tell right now. He has a stocking, and a small sock, and a perfect little white star. We think his given name might be Noble's Star of Joy, but we're not sure yet. Still need a barn name.
Momma and baby seem fine. Baby has found the dairy bar with no problem. Vet will be out in the am, and I will update then.
Happy Saturday to you all!
