    Barbaro Updates: 531

    updates are now here.

Update 3186: Steve Haskin takes his weekly look at the evolving Derby picture: Ky. Derby Trail: Py in the Sky.

Update 3185: An excellent look at the history of the Triple Crown: Road to the Triple Crown 2008.

Update 3184: Curlin had his first work this morning at Nad al Sheba since his World Cup prep win in the $175,000 Jaguar Trophy: Curlin 'Awesome' in World Cup Workout, excerpt:

"He was traveling very well and looked great," he added of the move, which Curlin accomplished in 1:02.60 under exercise rider Carmen "Carlos" Rosas.

"Carlos does such a great job," Blasi said. "I told him to go in 1:03 and that's about as close as you can get. You could tell Curlin was very comfortable with where he was at. He had good direction toward the wire but was well within himself. It was exactly what we wanted."

Pyro's impressive performance in the Louisiana Derby put him back at the top of the second Derby pool at 4-1, War Pass was 9-2: Pyro favored in second Derby Future Wager pool.

A pleasant evening was spent at Sam Houston Race Park. I hung out with Scott, another exercise rider for Steve Asmussen.

    Please keep calling and writing.

###Our dressage show went extremely well yesterday (it was a schooling show and lots of new and young horses--and riders ;o)

Snazzy dun mustang at HIS first show yesterday--VERY forward and quite a handsome fellow, all braided and brushed.

###There is a job for EVERY horse. We just have to make certain that there is someone to get the horse to where it can learn that job. Saving them from slaughter is just the first step.

What I saw yesterday was just ONE of the possible "jobs" for these rescued horses. It's a daunting task, this business of finding places for the horses that are saved, but I know it can be done.

    STRATEGY FOR MONDAY MARCH 10

Right now we have a tremendous amount of momentum. We must keep that going and not let up. For the present time, we will be targeting Representatives. The magic number of co-sponsors that we need is 218. We currently have 195. This is very achievable based on feedback from last weeks event.

Please mention Americans Against Horse Slaughter (you can click on the logo at the top of this page) and remind them that we are a non funded, grassroots group of people from across the country brought together for the sole purpose of passing this legislation. It is important that they know we have NO OTHER agenda.

    Good Morning,
Everyone is sleeping late today.Friday I couldn't take it anymore, I went to SCR to see the horses after work, I got there in five minutes. BB a very spoiled TB saw me and jumped up and down on her hind legs twice, Hans went crazy he was so happy he kepy wrapping his head around my shoulders,Madison, who left us yesterday I cried, she kept coming to me and nuzzled. She was my sponsor horse. Charlie and Freedom also went to good homes yesterday. All the others knew who I was and made me feel so welcome and missed. I went back yesterday I needed another fix and had to say goodbye to Madison.

Jonna, everyone should be charged and sent to jail.

    I forgot...Great News

There is a man here in CT that is looking for permits in Durham to open a crematory for horses that pass over. As he said "all you can do is bury them" he wants people to have another option. Dignity..gotta love this guy.

A sad beginning to my Monday, fellow Fans...I just returned from assisting a friend and member of our calling group in saying "Good bye" to her sweet cat, Mister Bob. If you could say a quick prayer for him, I know she would appreciate it. I am comforted by knowing that my beloved Margot will be there to show him the way at the Rainbow Bridge.

Durham Man Seeks Zoning Change For Horse Crematory

    POSTED: 8:52 am EDT March 10, 2008
    UPDATED: 9:14 am EDT March 10, 2008

DURHAM, Conn. -- A Durham man is seeking a zoning change to build a horse crematory in the town's industrial park.

Jeff Polaski said currently in Connecticut there are no alternatives to the burial of a horse when it dies or is euthanized other than to bury it.

Polaski said the crematory he hopes to have approved will be for cremating large hoofed animals, including cows and llamas in addition to horses.

According to Polaski, Connecticut has the largest number of horses per capita of any state in the country and more horses than any other state in the Northeast.

Polaski has told the Zoning Commission the crematory would be very clean-burning with no smoke and no odor.

    Morning,
I'm half-way back from strep throat and ear infection ! Was able to make all the calls above and most said they were getting lots of calls, so maybe we're getting through.
Got to go now and call my two state nerds who have not cosponsored !

Wrote an email to Ms Lovejoy about Windchill also, it was not a happy thing to do but very necessary. I want her to know that people from all over the nation are watching this case. I wrote that I was in North Carolina and that we here are very interested .

If you write her, how about saying where you are from, just to give her an idea of the national interest and spotlight on this. Its human nature to perk up a little and expend a little more effort when we know a national audience has us in its spotlight ? At least , for what it is worth, I think so.

Making my two Senators calls , then going back to bed. I'm eating lots of chicken soup.
Thanks for all the good wishes and get well prayers from my Famblee.

Made all my calls, emailed Ms. Lovejoy. God bless her and her connections, and please let them hear the voices of the world concerning this horrid situation with the death of that wonderful little colt.

I need to write about him--to take the power of his death out of my head. I need to be useful, not still feeling that paralysis I feel when the world betrays people or animals that did not ask to be brought into the world...

Especially the animals. The sheet from Canada did toss me over the edge...I remember such photos from FL gh farms where dogs had been abandoned to starve to death: the owner/kennel guy--they just would walk away.

Dogs standing among the bodies of their kind, terrible wounds from dog fights--you can imagine what they were eating--and in the end, so many would have to be destroyed. And the rest brought to the surface for possible rescue. This was how I got my first GH: He was from a group of 300 abandoned in a warehouse in MA....only 150 could be saved. Rory bore the emotional damage of that to his death, although he came further and further from the horror every year...he began me on my path of GH rescue and adoption...

But all that evil crap is seeping to the surface. Not a good thing.

So I will keep busy. And there's always my FoBs to lean upon. I love you guys...we'll all get through this. Windchill's amazing spirit--his courage and trust and seeming recovery--and then sudden loss
have twisted the heads and hearts of so many FoBs.

Evil and cruelty to animals just defies understanding. Yes, I know all the reasons::::::but HOW can people do what they do to our defenseless animals who only want to love us????

OK, sorry for that rant....must go and see what Joe has been up to today. God bless the angels and the archangels who labor tirelessly in defense of the creatures who have no voice.

    Monday, March 10th...
The storm went north (sorry Oregon) and only scattered showers could come to us. We might be 67 degrees. Today we will greet another injured gelding from the race track. And a skinny thoroughbred mare will arrive from a feed lot in Turlock. We will say goodbye to Dutch, an older thoroughbred gelding who returns to his foster home in Orangevale. 107 horses on our ranch, and high in the sky our No Vacancy sign is lit. We have filled up our friends. We have filled up others we hardly know, but their ranches are safe and their horses look incredible.

It was a few days before Christmas when 14 year old April appeared at our front gate. April gave me a box of chocolates, then asked if she and her mom could foster a horse. Mom Connie was sweet as can be, and the next day I drove to Vacaville to take a look at their 3 acres. Connie and April have 2 other horses. 3 dogs which mostly stay on the couch. Several cats, lots of fish, and a gray rabbit who is house trained. I went to a feed lot in Elk Grove and bought Butter Cup, a paint mare who needed help. Butter Cup was transported to Connie and April, and she has since gained more than 100 pounds. April has started riding Butter Cup, and this summer they hope to enter local schooling shows.

It was late last summer when 17 year old Randi appeared at our front gate. Randi gave me a card from Hallmark, and asked if she and her mom Noreen could foster a horse. A few days later I drove to their 5 acres in Vacaville. Noreen and Randi have 2 other horses, both thoroughbreds. 3 dogs which mostly stay on the couch. Several cats, 2 goats, and a black rabbit who is boss of the back yard. From our ranch Holly Meeks transported Blue Ensign, a gelding from the race track who came to us with a shattered ankle. Last week Randi once again appeared at our front gate. She asked how does Blue Ensign become officially hers? Randi loves him like crazy. A one dollar bill of sale was signed, and another adoption is in the books.

Cathy and I love our foster parents. They live in Barstow, they live in Eugene, they live in Provo, and all places in between. Grateful horses who are given a second chance.

Becky Jean lives in Reno, and not long ago she sent this note: I was a foster kid, and now I am a foster parent. Ever notice how horses watch the sun go down?

Marlayna lives in Georgia, and she sent this note: Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world; indeed it is the only thing that ever has. (margaret mead)

Robin Gill lives in Oregon, and she sent this note: Work hard at your goals, never talk bad about others, and you will be amazed how quickly your dreams come true.

Enjoy your beautiful Monday, and be sure to hug your horses. A special Happy Birthday to Candi Davenport, her daughter Leah is a basketball star, and congratulations on having a great weekend. Another special hello to Cora Mason, and have a blast with your band at Disneyland.

    Joe

We are starting a new feature. Horses rescued from all over America. It is time others are recognized for helping horses in need. Also we will be showing more photos of horses after they have been adopted from us.

Top left: Cheryl Notturno lives in Riverside, and here are Apollo and Dunk, both rescued.

Top right: It was a month ago when Shannon came to our ranch and adopted Comstock Cat. Look at them now.

Bottom left: Marlayna lives in Georgia, and here she is with her 2 thoroughbreds Babe and Dancer.

Bottom right: Caroline Betts went to a feed lot in Chino last week and saved the life of this gelding. He is 8, and Caroline calls him Cole.

Did anyone post Harriette's Devotional for the day: well, here it is, and it's a good one....
    **************************************************
The more stress we have the less we like other people---and ourselves. A little pressure is sufficient. Stress can be productive if it is something we like doing. But when we can no longer ka no gi a ,enjoy and sing about life, we need to re-evaluate the direction we are going. It is impossible to withdraw from every problem, but neither can we go on without some relief. Being responsible is a natural part of life--very necessary to living well and being contented. To find a happy medium is to center ourselves where peace and answers can be found. It does not come from the noise and complaints of the world--but from that secret place of harmony and strength within the heart. It is a place that must be added to and kept harmonious, for it gives us poise and renewal when we need it.

Once you have heard the meadowlark and caught the scent of fresh plowed earth, peace cannot escape you.

Great new to share and just to remind us all that there are good peeeeples out there.

We have two horses at the rescue Dolly older pretty a PMU mare, not use to people and shys away a bit but is getting much more comfortable with us. She was never touched my humans for three years of her life.
Granny, who is ancient, she is either late 30's or somewhere in her 40's, was starved in a back field to die at auction, we brought her back with the problem she has a fear of people, we feel she had a bad life. She is beautiful and may approach you slowly, she does with me and even lets me kiss her nose.

Both will be going to a wonderful home with a great family around mid May. This family wants them both to live out the rest of their lives in a good home with lots of love. Age or condition has no bearing. More people need to take lessons from this family.

    Good Monday Morning, ABR Famblee:)

The mouse on this 'puder' has somehow during the night developed a mind of it's own:/ Giving me FITTTTTTSSSSS....and I am 'old' and the time has changed...normally, I do not become 'cranky' until Wednesday...however, this mouse problem has put my 'crankiness' into 'fast-forward':/ I will see if daughter, who owns this 'puder' can help me fix it later. I am afraid I will hit the wrong button....I got to the control panel, clicked on 'mouse' and then when I saw the menu come up with all it's choices, I suddenly wondered what in the Sam-Hill I thought I'd be doing there...and closed it out!

It is a lap-top puder, therefore it has a 'built-in' mouse....I should just buy a 'wireless' one, and then I wouldn't be 'messing' up daughters laptop....doesn't it say that somewhere here??? LOL!

I did fax a letter last night to ADA Lovejoy, so I've added my 'two-cents' to her PILES OF LETTERS:) I am SURE by now, she must have PILES OF LETTERS in defense of that sweet little colt:( I don't dwell, I cannot.....it's too painful and debilitating for me...so, I work on rising above the IDIOTS who supposedly were 'taking care' of Windchill and am quite sure at the end of their lives here, will be standing before their God and will need to answer QUESTIONSSSSSS...just before 'decending' into the lowest portion of that place we ALL do not want to GO!

O.K., I must zooooom....when home again, home again, clippity-clop, I will compose a 'not form letter' to the Reps for today and get those 'stinkin' faxes SENT:) so perhaps I can HELP THE HORSES....everyone, have a GREAT day today....:)

So happy for you. Once again, how do those horses so USED and ignored in their lives--HOW do they trust again. Grace of God, that's for sure.
Renee: I am so happy that one of the horses bounced for you. I have heard this described in horses. The GH--as you know--do that too, but next, their paws usually wind up on our shoulders.

Is the Granny, Granny Jewels? She also suffered and was reclaimed and loved and loved.

Have any of you gone to the story about the abused Alberta horses? In the photo caption, it says of the horses that are being rescued, "some will be adopted and the others will be slaughtered". I find that peculiar, rescuing them for slaughter...

Wendy, for whatever reason I can't get that story to load on this computer. I'll try from home tonight.

Starved horses doesn't bode well for that big tourist attraction - The Calgary Stampede - does it?

    jonna,
Her full name is Granny Smith. I have all the patients and love for her that she needs, if you get to close even the other horses she uses both of her back legs and kicks makes a strange noise and glares. I told her from the beginning we woud be friends and I would never hurt her.
I feel very sorry for her, she is fiesty though and will bite you if you get in her space.

It is very sad, she wants to get close so bad! She had come along way. We are very proud of her and we all love her very much she has been with us since 2005. Now she will go to her forever home.

###Wendy in MI, I read this morning here in The Star, and have just voted as well thank you for the link. I don't understand the slaughter bit either, the poor horses after all they've gone through. I hope that perhaps there is an error in reporting. And I don't understand why this man had horses still after alreay being fined for neglect. GRRRRRRRR

###Renee, thanks for the ray of sunshine about Dolly and Granny.

Ahhhhhhhhh:) The 'mouse' problem is FIXED!! :)

Somehow during the night....a little 'creature', mayhaps TIMBIT from Equine Heaven came and decided to change the setting to 'wheel mouse'....it has been reset to whatever the heck it is supposed to be set at, and once again, I'm up and runnnnnnnnnnnning:)

Geeeeeze!!! Being 'old' and having the time change to jip me from an hour of sleep and THEN to have the computer suddenly develop a mind of it's own nearly put me POSTAL this morning, Famblee!!

Renee:) I am BEYOND HAPPY for your experiences in the Barn this weekend, Girlfriend!!! Yippppppeeeeeee-Skippppppyyyyyyy for YOU and for your Equine FRENS:)

I must compose a letter now....a 'not form letter' for the powers that be....of course the bottom line is, form letter or not, all I want to do is politely ask them to stand up for our AMERICAN HORSES....never mind, I NEVER hear back from ANY of them anyway:/ But if it is a 'not form letter' they want, then it is a 'not form letter' they shall receive:)

    John Henry's legend celebrated
FANS REMEMBER TOUGH RISE TO SUCCESS
    By Art Jester
    AJESTER@HERALD-LEADER.COM

John Henry's fans remembered him yesterday with unabashed emotion, it was almost as if the great racehorse were still alive and well at the Kentucky Horse Park.

"He filled my heart and never left and never will," said Judy Gadwood of Burbank, Calif.

Sandra Webb of Bowling Green put it simply: "I just love him."

About 60 fans -- many speaking in the present tense about their friend "John" -- attended a memorial at the Horse Park on what would have been the illustrious gelding's 33rd birthday.

John Henry, who won $6.6 million and was twice voted Horse of the Year, was euthanized on Oct. 8 after struggling for about two months with failing kidneys.

He was buried in front of the Hall of Champions at the Horse Park, where he had lived in retirement since 1983.

For the memorial, John Nicholson, the Horse Park's executive director, reprised some of what he said at a Jan. 21 awards dinner in Beverly Hills, Calif.

He was there to accept an Eclipse Award -- thoroughbred racing's highest honor -- given to the Horse Park for its contributions to the industry and for its special care for John Henry over nearly a quarter-century.

"The spirit of John Henry is going to live on and on," Nicholson said, adding that the Horse Park will always be filled with the "special spirit of John Henry."

The memorial ceremony was brief, which left lots of time for reminiscing, looking at photos of him and enjoying chocolate cake and doughnuts. (John Henry loved chocolate.)

Fans were invited to leave written notes on a bulletin board. Lexington's Sally Chase left this:

"I miss you so much. I see your picture at home and at work every day. I try to think of you healthy and frolicking in clover with a never-ending supply of chocolate doughnuts and peppermints."

Later, Chase sobbed as she tried to talk. "He's my boy, and I'm not a race fan," she said. "I always loved him."

John Henry's large heart may have propelled him to success, but several of his special friends said that his eyes truly revealed the horse.

"That's where John was," said Steve Faust of Huntington, W.Va., who took many photos of John Henry. "His eyes expressed a lot."

"I'd stand there," Faust said. "He'd look at me and I'd look at him. Something was going back and forth. You could just feel it."

Webb said the horse had "wise eyes" with great depth.

"Whenever I talked to him, I saw kindness," Webb said. "He's been on my mind a lot. He was a friend."

Gadwood said she saw "the eyes to a soul and heart when he looked at you. He connected with you. ... I think he knew who really loved him and admired him."

Likewise, Diane Carreon of Los Angeles said: "I love him. He's my hero. He was easy to love. He was easy to respect. John overcame so much."

Of course, much of the legend of John Henry the racehorse came from his lackluster pedigree and the way he was passed around in his early years when no one saw any potential.

Howard McClurkin, a retired real estate developer from Weatherford, Texas, said he identified with John Henry because "we both started from zero."

"He taught us that any achievement is possible if we have the resolve," McClurkin said. "He taught us that it doesn't make any difference who you are, where you came from."

"He was small and ugly and nobody wanted him, and that didn't matter. He lassoed the stars anyway."

McClurkin said that when he went through a difficult time in business, "I thought of John in a stretch run, and he never quits."

McClurkin also called John Henry a hero in a time when heroes are hard to find.

"There are no Lou Gehrigs today," he said.

John Henry was bred at Golden Chance Farm in Paris, owned by Verna Lehmann and her husband, Bob, who died in 1974.

Lehmann recalled feeding John Henry some chocolate, and he wiped his mouth once on each side of her blouse. It was his way of saying thank you, she said.

"He wanted to win and make everybody happy."

Extra Monday 3/10 National Target List (HAHS)

FIRST THINGS FIRST - Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311 / HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/ request: Ask the Senators who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Senator Mary Landrieu, sponsor and promoter of the Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their recently-released 2008 WHITE PAPER are at the DB Thread noted near the bottom of this Post.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

    800-828-0498

    800-459-1887

    800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE SUGGESTION/CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE Prior HS History above the LIST OF LEGISLATORS below.)

    1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

    2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

    3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

    4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

    5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

    Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Monday 3/10/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

    Friday 3/10 Extra HAHS List

Prior HS History: Per Daniel: Today we are done contacting the new members of the Senate elected last November and start a new cycle contacting again those who voted for the Ensign-Byrd
Agriculture Appropriations Amendment in 2005 but have not yet cosponsored the bill. (added per CJ) Also, the two Senators from FL cosponsored S 1915 in the 109th Congress.

IF you're done with today's ABR Strategy & State directions & the above list and STILL want to do more - you can go to messages 15321.10 for a good alternate target list of Senators from AWI/SAPL. [That list is visible in post 2 of the DB Thread noted below.]

Add'l info re Prior HS History of the Reps on today's ABR Strategy list:

Although all cosponsored HR 503 in the 109th Congress, they did not uniformly support HR 249 earlier in the 110th. FYI -

Bachus and Cramer both voted NO on HR 249, and Clyburn did not vote on it. The rest on today's list voted YES.

IMO when calling those who voted YES on HR 249, we should thank them for that vote and REMIND them that HR 249 only protects WILD equines and we still need HR 503 for the rest of them and to stop export for slaughter.

Posted by: Margie at March 10, 2008 9:18 PM

I probably shoudn't be so quick to condemn the statement 'small and ugly'. My reasonings are that those types of labels put horses in jeopardy. You know, they don't measure up to a certain standard.

And small and ugly meant zip, after all. Look at John Henry's accomplishments.

I feel very protective of the furbabies lately.

Right now we have a tremendous amount of momentum. We must keep that going and not let up. For the present time, we will be targeting Representatives. The magic number of co-sponsors that we need is 218. We currently have 195. This is very achievable based on feedback from last weeks event. Also, please call those you met with last week and say thank you. Ask if there is any follow up information they need.

Please mention Americans Against Horse Slaughter and remind them that we are a non funded, grassroots group of people from across the country brought together for the sole purpose of passing this legislation. It is important that they know we have NO OTHER agenda.

Hiya, FsOB! Wow, I have to share my amazing day with you. I received an e-mail from none other than Joe Shelton at TB Friends, thanking me for my call last week. I sent him a note tonight, letting him know that I printed down his e-mail. It was as though I'd gotten a note from Mother Teresa, Gandhi, or Martin Luther King!

I called Joe last week to let him know that the "I Do" Foundation would be contacting him, as well as the UPENN Laminitis Research Fund, Old Friends in Georgetown, KY, and Mitchell Farm Equine Retirement in Salem, CT. Brent & I eloped last Summer on 07/07/07 and we are hosting a belated party in Louisville on 06/20/2008. Because Brent & I were both previously married, we would prefer that our families and friends just honour us with their presence on 06/20. But I worried that some of my relatives wouldn't say "no" to gift-giving.... So we set up a "charity registry" on the I Do Foundation's Website. So far, the Foundation has approved UPENN, Old Friends, and Mitchell Farm for our registry. I got the news of those approvals today. Yippee!

    #### To Renee: Congrats on your getting back to SCR last weekend. Thanks for sharing the news about Dolly & Granny.
To Marg in Maine: My sympathies to your friend, whose cat passed away. When I was a preschooler, I had a duckling named "Mr. Bob" in honour of my Father.

First of all, we wish to thank everyone for all of their efforts to make the first Americans Against Horse Slaughter event successful! It was great to meet so many passionate people who united from all over the country to help end the suffering of our American Horses. Without a doubt, we truly witnessed proof that ordinary people can do extraordinary things.

A special thanks to Alex, Julie, Paula and John Holland!! You all did a fantastic job!!

We also wish to thank Daniel (from HFH) who kept the strategy succinct as well as fostering the target lists for all to work off of. “Thanks Daniel!”

A huge thanks as well to HSUS and AWI for their support.

Our greatest gratitude goes to those of you who supported our efforts from the home front. Your hard work remains relentless and your voices were heard loud and clear in the halls of DC!!

Finally, as most of you know, we cannot share the details of our work in DC on a public forum. What we can tell you is that our days were jam packed with meetings which were specifically designed to secure further support for our bill.

While maneuvering between the House and the Senate, we were able to gather some valuable information and now have a job for you resulting from our meetings with the sponsor’s offices. Please see the new strategy that will be posted all week and look for the “details” coming your way via our private email blitzes.

    Continued Success,

    Debra and Shelley

P.S. Please keep those calls and faxes going to the house this week!! We need to reach our goal of 218 Cosponsors. Every day counts and time is not on our side.

Thanks SO much for the 'report' from the 'happs' in DC,Debra!! I know more information will be coming to an 'in-box' near us ALL in the days to come:)

I'm STOKED, TOO!!! I am ENERGIZED and HOPEFUL that our voices ARE BEING 'HERD' in those HALLOWED HALLS!! The people I've spoken with there since 'we' hit that HILL are ALL very 'up-beat' and I might add, IMPRESSED with our grassroots organization:)

YES!YES!YES! 2008 WILL BE THE *YEAR OF OUR AMERICAN HORSES*!!! I just KNOW it!!!

Everyone, sleep well tonight....wake refreshed, 'cause we've got WORK to do!!! Those horses are counting on us!!
