    Barbaro Updates: 529

    updates are now here.

Update 3177: HRTVs Target Louisville: March 7 2008. Make sure to view Parts 1, 2 and 3. A good summary of the current status of the Derby. It was interesting to watch Big Brown's impressive win (Big Brown Bursts Onto Derby Scene.)

Update 3176: A Friday update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:

Due to the impending rain Saturday Tim decided to move breezes forward to today. Tail Tails walked early this morning and will be leaving for Charlestown this morning. The race will go off around 7:15 pm. She was bubbling around the barn and hopefully will have a great first experience tonight. Who's Happy had a delicate gallop with Tim aboard. The two have decided to tolerate each other and get the job done. Tim reports that she is still very strong but managable with draw-reins. Powdered Donut also trained this morning and had a happy gallop as we like to call it. This is when the rider lets the horse pick the pace their happy with (as long as that's not breezing). She came back to the barn and seemed happy as a clam. Two of Wands went to the gate briefly this morning and enjoyed a pleasant gallop for a mile and a half. Our Diva and Seventeen Love breezed (not together)three eighths. Robbie reported that Diva went perfectly but this could not be confirmed by the official clocker (Mike-Owner of Bubble Gum) due to the thick fog. Rose Campbell and Rockin Fun breezed together for half a mile and had a very captivating work. Tim was aboard Rosie and Robbie took the helm on Rocky. They are a good pair and had a great work. Gator Nation worked a brilliant five eighths of a mile and continues his quest for fitness. He seems happy and is eating well. Rajahstan and Paris Night took on a half mile breeze and both worked meticulously. These two creatures have a tendency to be very serious and all about work. They handled the schedule without getting frazzled which is a good thing. Last but not least I heard from Mike that Saar and Bubble Gum worked a flawless eighth. Owners do have a tendancy to look at their horses through rose colored glasses. I have to admit that I am guilty of this as well and I wouldn't have it anyother way.

Update 3175: This morning it was cold, cold and windy. It was perhaps the coldest day of the entire winter here which was a bit of a shock after all the decent weather we have had lately! Course the combination of wind and colder temperatures did perk the horses up and make them a little skittish. We had eight sets, so an easier morning. Five went before the break and three after the break. Mine all seemed to go quite well, which included a couple of 2yos going to stand in the gate. Anyway, it was one of the few morning's where you were quite glad to get off your last horse.

Update 3174: Steve Asmussen has emphasized focus with his training of Pyro through the early part of this year, which did seem to work in the Risen Star: Asmussen emphasizes focus with Risen Star winner Pyro.

Curlin will face Godolphin's Jalil among his challenger in the Dubai World Cup: Jalil Springs Surprise in Dubai. X Fair Hill trainee Diabolical had his first win for his new connections as he prepares for the Dubai Golden Shaheen: Diabolical Wicked in Shimaal Sprint.

Keep the momentum, keep calling and writing.

    Good morning, fellow Fans!

I have the best news to share this morning...Maine's Congressman Tom Allen is now officially a cosponsor of H.R. 503! Kudos to the Maine Mob calling group! All of our Downeast legislators are now on board. (But I know our work is not done!)

I wish a peaceful, productive day to all. Special prayers for little Erin.

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George and all of the rest of the gang in Equine Heaven.

    On their behalf:

    MORNING POST SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI

    STRATEGY FOR FRIDAY MARCH 7

First, we would like to thank everyone who participated in this week's very special event. A huge thanks to those who came to DC and to those that kept those phones and faxes buzzing from the home front! This was truly a team effort and you are all to be commended for a spectacular job!!

It is suggested that you use the remainder of this week contacting the Senators on our high priority list. Remind them that representatives of Americans Against Horse Slaughter were in DC this week and provided their staffs with materials supporting our position regarding the passage of S311. If they have any unanswered questions, please ask them to contact you and tell them that you will provide them with information addressing their concerns.

It is also a good time to call our co-sponsors to say a quick thanks for their continued support.

Also, please let them know that Americans Against Horse Slaughter is a non funded grass roots group of concerned citizens from all over the country and invite them to visit www.americansagainsthorseslaughter.com to find out more about us.

This was a very productive week and after reviewing the results from our meetings, we will revise strategy for next week and march forward!!

Thanks again for everything and remember…..WE ARE BARBARO’s VOICE….let it be heard!!

    Good Morning Sunshine Barbaro

Stars in heaven were beautiful...but yours was out of this world. Take care of you and your equine heavenly frens and other frens in heaven and know we miss and love you.

    Good Morning Family/Fans of Barbaro

Bad weather is approaching in parts of the country...please be safe and warm....

PLEASE CALL, FAX, EMAIL. Congratulations on a new co-sponsor....

Our rescues are going to need us more than ever. Escalating gas prices means everything goes up...we know how it is affecting us...and you know it will them....I pray we find solutions to help them...they are there for us.

Remember our Fallen Angels, the ones suffering human or animal, prayers to all, our wildlife and always our loving family.

    Have a nice day.

    ####
    Good Morning Alex.
Good Morning Tim and Fair Hill.
    Our Fallen Angels...we are here.

    ####
Thought about the gas prices going up....we may all need to go back to horse and buggy....like the Amish does their transportation or bicycles....because of the American dollar declining...cost of oil barrels will continue to go up.

March 7 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

The first thing in the morning when our feet touch the floor, our feelings begin to feed us impressions. Not only do they review our situation in a few seconds, they decide if this is a good day or if it should be one of anxiety. This is the precise time to hush feelings and paint the day the way we want it to be---not to be fed from the negative side. We tell the wrong impressions that they are not acceptable, that we feel different than we have in the past. This is a new day and we are free and happy, able to change what needs to be changed, to do what needs to be done. There are times when we must go against our own feelings and dictate what we will have, shaping and reshaping the hours as we see fit.

When I make peace, it is a long and lasting one. There is no end to it.

    Santana

I just wanted to take a moment to say "Thank You" to Paula Bacon, John Holland, Alex, Julie, Shelley A., Debra and all the rest of you who worked so hard planning and organizing the DC event. I don't mean to omit anyone's name but it's been a very busy week and I can't think straight yet and know that I probably have, so please forgive me.

Barbi, Beth and Linda who belonged to the Florida group - you were awesome and I was grateful to be part of such a passionate, well spoken team. Katherine - I'm so sorry that I didn't get to say good bye to you. You were a welcome and powerful addition to our group.

All the FOBs and other equine advocates who were there - it was such a pleasure and honor to be there with you. Unfortunately, since this was a working visit, I didn't really get to personally meet and socialize with many of you. To all of you who worked so hard calling, faxing, emailing and writing letters of support - it made our meetings so much easier. The aides all admitted that they were getting a high level of calls in support of S.311 and H.R.503 and that they receive calls on a daily basis. I believe that gave us added credibility.

I've said this before and will repeat it now - FOBs are the greatest and I feel honored and humbled to be a part of this group. So please know that I deeply respect each one of you and am so thankful for your dedication and hard work.

Now - have a wonderful day everyone!!!!!!!!!

#####Kentucky Equine Humane Center Fund Raiser Ending

When this fundraiser started I indicated that I would end the fundraising on March 1st. March 1st has come and gone. So, this fundraiser is officially over.

We raised $385.00. That is enough to sponsor 1 class. That money has already been sent to KyEHC.

The remaining $135.00 will be donated directly to the Kentucky Equine Humane Center in honor of the FOBs. I will do that in the next few days.

The horse show is March 29th. I will keep you posted on how it goes. Maybe I can get pictures. :)

Thanks to all who have participated. Thank you! As always, the FOBs came through.

Don't forget to keep calling your congressional leadership in DC.

Maybe in 2009 we can focus all our attention on the enforcement of the anti slaughter legislation (because the legislation will be law), horse rescue and other horse welfare issues.

    Thanks to all!!

    Committee stops horse slaughter bill

    By Andrea Zimmermann
    RRSTAR.COM
    Posted Mar 05, 2008 @ 09:38 PM

SPRINGFIELD — A House committee Wednesday put a stop to a local lawmaker’s push to reopen the DeKalb horse slaughterhouse.

The committee voted 5-2 to stop the bill from moving forward. Rep. Jim Sacia, R-Pecatonica, the bill’s sponsor, said he will try again next year.

The Legislature voted to close the Cavel slaughterhouse in 2007 when it banned the slaughter of horsemeat for human consumption, effectively closing the nation’s only remaining horse slaughterhouse. The horsemeat was sent overseas, where it is considered a delicacy.

Sacia told the committee it needs to be reopened because horses now are being taken to slaughter in Mexico, where conditions are inhumane. If
the DeKalb slaughterhouse was still open, the conditions could be at least controlled, he argued.

He also said horses are being neglected or abused is rising because people have nowhere to take horses they cannot keep.

But Ledy Vankavage, spokeswoman for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said all horse slaughter is inhumane. She also said her organization hasn’t found evidence of the abuse or neglect because it has never been tracked before.

Four committee members voted “present,” or stayed neutral, saying they wanted to see evidence of increased horse abuse before deciding.

    Good Friday Morning, ABR Famblee:)

I will be composing a letter to ADA on Windchill's behalf this weekend! Will send via 'snail-mail'....also I think I remember reading that the ADA has never had a case such as this one and was putting out 'feelers' for ways in which to handle/prosecute.....I intend to include in my letter, a suggestion to contact Huston SPCA....as in "Animal Cops Huston"...they have certainly had far too much experience with horses and bad owners/care peeps there, 'cause I see it all the time on that show of theirs by the same name, on Animal Planet!!! Surely, someone from their facility could give PLENTY of 'pointers'!!! Sad, but true!

Marg in Maine:) KUDOS (again) for Tom Allen...I will fax a big fatt THANK YOU!! :) Glad your time in DC was so rewarding for you, and thanks for going there!!! :)

Nancy, CT/Jennie, KY....Don't give up on me, my life of late has been just NUTS-O, but haven't forgotten either of these great causes and checks WILL be in the mail!!

Renee:) Were you ever able to locate the horses' pictures which Cathy Potter so kindly posted on the DB....#20496.16 or there abouts??? I am hoping MANY of my Famblee will go 'esplore' the thread and send anything along to Safe Haven Horse Rescue to offer a helping hand there...:)

Margie:) Headed for Zara's candles now...hope she can come HOME!!! xoxo

O.K., well that is it for this morning from these Foothills in No/Ca...peeples EVERYWHERE:) I hope you have a GRAND DAY TODAY....

Good grief. That music got to me. Shouldn't have turned it on.

People wonder why one animal stirs such emotion. It isn't just one animal, for me anyway. I picture Windchill's little face, and then I see all of them. One by one they come into my mind's eye.

Can someone please enlighten me about the political process in the US as I live in the UK but greatly support your endeavours to stop horse slaughter. Is it true that a single senator can block debate on anti- slaaughter legislation and can it be an indefinite block? This would seem very peculiar to me. Are senators being asked to press the blocking senator to suspend his objection and let there be a debate in which he can state his opinions. I shall be upset as you will if time for the legislative programme (UK spelling!) runs out because of one man and the inaction of his colleagues.

    Margie,
A very powerful song. His face, that sweet soul. At my age I have a serious problem with any kind of abuse...(only the bad Mr Tucker where are you?)Especially those who are defenceless and helpless. That just makes me crazy!

Sorry frens I'm still in a bad way.

    Hello everyone,

I just tuned into the DB for a second (at work) and this was posted on the
    Windchill Foundation Fundraiser thread:

    "WC is home.

I would like to add a special prize to this fundraiser 'the first Wind Chill Foundation' Tshirt. It will be white and in extra large, since they sometimes shrink. If some one can send me a note, I will email them the logo that will be on the front of the tshirt. They are still on order, so it may take a few weeks to be able to get it in the mail to winner."

This wonderful offer was posted by Kathi, Windchill's Mommy!

I am so complimented and have a "warm fuzzy" feeling that Kathi and Jeff have offered this additional gift!

As I posted back to Kathi, this speaks volumns of their giving and loving hearts. Windchill JUST got home and they are STILL giving...I am speechless.

Please take a minute and consider participating in this fundraiser. ALL of the items come from the heart...

    Heaven sent...
    with a little Earthly effort.

    Thank you!

Do we know yet the direction/purpose(s) of the Windchill Foundation? Am sure it will be worthy and worthwhile - just wondering whether it will focus on education/reporting re neglect/abuse, and/or active rescue.

    Good day,

Thanks for your email. I promise I will catch up at some point on emails, it's
hard to find the hours to keep up with everything going on at this particular
    moment.

I can't pretend to know the words to say and the only thing I could think to ask
God was to "please hold this little guy in Your arms. He loves his head in Your
lap. He loves strawberry yogurt. And he loves to be brushed with the soft brush
on the tuft of hair on the top of his head while You talk to him. Tell him thank
you for coming into our lives. And that our lives will never be the same."

Thank all of you for caring. Thank you for being with us through all of this.

Havent heard yet... I know Jeff Tucker has not been feeling well (flu bug) and he has been focusing on getting WC back home this week. He promises to provide details once he gets a few technical things up and running such as a web forum/site etc. Maybe over the weekend, he will find the time and energy to provide an outline of his thoughts.

Based on the added item to Laurie H's Blanket fundraiser, we do know that a LOGO has been designed... so maybe that will revel a few ideas.

Matt...Yes, sadly, it is true that just 'one' can stop the process right in it's hoofprints:( Sad, but true!

Yes, many of us have been calling and writing letters to Senators, pleading that the 'hold' be lifted...we have even faxed and called the Committee Members requesting they PLEASE see to it that our American Horses might be afforded 'due process'....so far, our efforts have not been put into action, but we just keep trying!

I read recently somewhere, that if Senator Craig does 'lift' his hold...there are five more just like him in line to place another 'hold' on the Bill....that is why, in my opinion, we must make the general public aware of horse slaughter so that the public outcry will far outweigh those Senators' and their 'holds'.

This is why it is SO IMPORTANT for all of us to keep making those calls, sending those 'stinkin' faxes and write the letters....we just MUST do all we can to HELP OUR AMERICAN HORSES.\

Thank you, Matt, for doing what you can on the other side of the 'pond' to help THOSE horses, too:)

March 2nd, 9:01pm: While cleaning Windchill's stall we found a notebook. In it was a letter he had 'dictated' to one of his caregivers. It was a note he wanted to send to all of the children who had written him:

March 2, 2008: When we were cleaning Windchill's stall, we found a notebook we had somehow missed. More than likely when Windchill was kicking around he probably ended up laying on top of it and so we didn't find it until later. What many of you may not know is that horses, like many animals, are very smart. They communicate with us in different ways. Sometimes those that they can communicate with are called 'horse whisperers.' More than likely one of the horse whisperers working with Windchill copied down his thoughts for him and forgot to tell us. I know Windchill would want to know we gave all the kids that had written to him his note back to them. I know he would also want them to know that he died very peacefully. It was very quick and it occurred in his sleep so he felt no pain and no suffering - he went to sleep knowing that children loved him and that made him very, very happy.

    Dear littler people,

I wanted to thank all of you for the cards and letters and pictures. I asked one of those that care for me to send you back my feelings and he promised that he would.

Your love and caring for me made me feel special. They made me feel warm inside and filled up a place in me that had been left empty.

Sometimes it feels like big people don't hear what you say, doesn't it? I hope your big people do - they must if they let you send me all those pretty pictures. I lived someplace they didn't hear me but then somebody did. They brought me to a warm place. They fed me. They held me like I hope your big people do with you. They told me that they loved me. And then they showed me your words and your pictures and I learned that kids like you see things like I do. So I was not alone. That made me very happy which made me feel even warmer inside.

Thank you for telling me you loved me and making me feel so much better. I will always remember that you cared and it will become a part of who I am deep in my heart. And you know what - now that I know the words I can say them back to you - I love you too.

    Your friend forever,

    Windchill

re - post by Renee Antaya at March 7, 2008 4:10 PM - sending you an email with some grave concerns about this petition.

There are posts about it at the Humanity Against Horse Slaughter (HAHS) Yahoo Group Site, and I am not the only one who, upon thoroughly reading the petition and the accompanying materials, has decided not to sign it. Everybody of course must follow their own conscience, but please read it carefully and do not assume it is "a good thing" . . .

    CJ,
Email sent back to you. I'm going to crawl in a deep hole.

    Matt in the UK,

This is what I know about Sen. Craig's block on the bill. There is a rule that the Senate instated several years ago that one Senator can block a bill indefinately. However, the other Senators can negotiate to try to lift the block. Sort of like "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours." That is what the supporters of the bill are trying to do now. But once the bill is on the Senate calendar, the Senator who placed the block has to philibuster (sp?) to keep the bill from being voted on. In this case, at that point, Sen. Craig has to decide if it is worth it or not. It does seem like an undemocratic rule, but the Senators wanted it that way. They're the only ones who can change it. Hope this helps a little bit.

By the way, thanks for all the support from across the sea!!

Getting back to work after the DC trip, it was a very rewarding experience for me and the others I am sure. Thanks to Janice, Lynda, Kathryn and Beth who joined me in representing Florida. I feel everyone there made a difference for our horses. Great news about the new co-sponsor.

Nala, my pitbull who most of you know had her leg amputated and went thru chemo a year and 3 months ago drove with us from Florida to DC. Thanks again to Gloria (ILL) for dog sitting. Please keep Nala in your prayers as she has to have minor surgery on Monday, they are removing some skin and checking a bump on her hip they are worried about.

    Regarding the Petition re "Regret"

This petition came to me in a mass email; I read it, and then sent this message to all in the addy field:

I am not supporting this petition. Read between the lines. Somebody want to convince me I'm wrong? Thanks - CJ in Hammond IN

One of the addressee's replied to me (only), asked me about my position:

    > What am I missing? What is their ulterior motive??
    >
    > Thanks for any insight you can share..
    >
    > Here is my response to her, which I later shared with the email group after seeing what Mary Martin had to say to the group following my statement:
    >
    > Anything that is telling people to stop saving horses, I will not sign, period. Did you read the whole thing? It is directed to RESCUE people, NOT to any gov't people.
    >
    > Do what you like, it is not for me. I may be paranoid, who knows.
    >
    > I have no inside info.
    >
    > One man's ulterior motive is another man's laudable cause . . .
    >
    > From MY point of view, anybody telling others to STOP RESCUING, I will not participate in it.
    >
    > This could even be instigated by people wanting slaughter to continue.
    >
    > I would not even sign a downed animal petition because I will not do anything to enable the continuation of slaughter.
    >
    > We do not want to IMPROVE CONDITIONS AT FEEDLOTS - we want to CLOSE THEM DOWN.
    >
    > Anything aimed to keep slaughter going on but allegedly try to make it more humane, I DO NOT TRUST.
    >
    > Does any of this make sense to you?
    >
    > What do YOU think? [end of my response to her query]

FOB Mary Martin also posted at HAHS and emailed the email addy field, saying that she would not sign and recommending everybody read it carefully.

As I said - everybody must follow their conscience - but this is MY take on it (and I am not alone).

(Hope this post doesn't cause any trouble here....)

The picture of the Wind Chill Foundation tee shirt has been posted on the Wind Chill Foundation fundraiser thread...

You guys, it is adorable. A close-up of that precious little face of Wind Chill's. He is looking right at the camera and capturing hearts ALL at the same time.

Please check it out...THIS is the shirt that Kathi and Jeff are offering to the Winner of the Wind Chill Foundation Fundraising Prize Package!

I am so touched by this addition...

    Very Cool Wind Chill news!

On the Wind Chill fundraiser thread, MaryL has posted a picture of the Wind Chill Foundation shirt. It is nice. On the WC updates (on Raindance site), Jeff has posted a like to the new forum, which is almost but not quite working yet. Can't really say why these events make me so happy...but they do.

Posted by: Kathy in Sc at March 7, 2008 5:57 PM

I know of a MN rescue that has a lot of experience with seizures of abused horses and works with state humane agents. There is an attorney who specializes in animal welfare who might be able to provide some insight and expertise. The University of MN (as well as UC-Davis) Equine people can provide a lot of expertise on care of foals and the magnitude of Windchill's neglect as well as expertise on starvation. I am also noting to the Douglas County DA that he should have arrived at that place with a proper blanket; his owner should have moved him to a place with a stall or sold him or donated him to a rescue or --here's a novel idea -- never bred her mare in the first place. Not only was he not able to get at the hay and water, he should have been on Omolene (baby horse food), anyway. He should never have been outside all day and should not have been with adult horses. I wonder about the condition of those adult horses if they are being fed only hay and water. If our horses are not on pasture (and no one is in the winter and spring), they get grain twice a day. Hay only? Yikes! And what about Windchill's hoof care and worming? The lack of the latter would certainly affect his health. And why didn't his owner check on him for three weeks, especially in such cold weather? Certainly she must have known that he was outside without a blanket (which wouldn't have been enough at night). I am astounded by the lack of care and attention that baby received.

POOR JOE: and he even tries to be polite to this idiot....god save His Archangels from such insult and injury...

(My personal favorite part of her rant was "this slaughter NONSENSE." Joe, I just need an address and a gun, ...I'm jest sayin'.)
    ####################################################
    Friday, March 7th...
A scalding phone message from a lady in Oregon. She tells me to focus on the positive, and quit with this slaughter nonsense. There are a thousand places to go on the internet if you want to read about terrible things happening to horses. The lady ends her message by saying I must have fallen off a race horse and hit my head. She says I never used to be this dumb. And if I continue to write about horse killers and slaughter, she and her daughter will no longer click on.

I phoned her back. I said live where I live. Watch as frightened slaughter bound horses cram into a double decker. Look at the expressions on their faces. And then you want me to go home and write about sunsets and owls?

There is a girl who brings cookies, fudge, and twice a pie. She is almost 13, and addicted to horses. We have known her since she was 8. The things that come out of her mouth. She tells me unemployment is at an all time high. Gasoline could be $5.00 a gallon by Memorial Day. The 3 candidates for president are scary. She says there will be no more horse racing in 5 years. America will go to war with North Korea. She once told me our ranch looks like a feed lot. The best station on television is Comedy Central, because especially right now the world needs laughter. She says grown ups are leaving a horrible mess for kids to clean up. She wants to know what happened to the Lotto money? It was suppose to go to schools, but now schools are firing teachers and getting rid of music and sports.

Almost 13, smart and observant. And she says if I post pictures of horse killers I am an idiot.

I am not making many fans lately...

Dish TV fixed our signal, and the 47 incher is back in business. The gray stallion Gold Label has found a new home. A grandpa thoroughbred gelding who was scheduled for auction in Roseville will instead be moved to his new home in Loomis. A pregnant quarter horse mare who was scheduled for auction in Roseville is instead living like a queen in Orinda. A young warmblood gelding who is taller than Shaq was moved from a horrible situation to his new home in Redding. Another mare came to us yesterday from a feed lot in Vallejo. 30 cents a pound, and we named her Melody.

Nikki lives in Vacaville, and she saves horses like I save coupons for doughnuts. Nikki phoned yesterday to say she was just given a beautiful thoroughbred gelding from a back yard breeder. The gelding was scheduled for auction in Petaluma. He is 16.2 hands and gray. His mom was on the property also, and she is probably 20 years old. The mom is going to auction. Nikki asks could I bring the mom to my ranch? Let her live out her days. And in return Nikki will train the tall gray gelding, advertise him for sale, and send me the profit.

Cathy and I are lucky enough to be associated with gobs of giving people. We all have opinions on things which matter most. Horse lovers can be very vocal. And if we all felt the same way, what a boring world this would be. Enjoy your 64 degree Friday, and be sure to hug horses.

BEAR PROTECTION ACT OF 2008 - WSPA ALERT

hotlink to take action, at the DB, General Non-Horse Related Folder, message 20633.1

Sharing action alert from WSPA - World Society for the Protection of Animals.

    BOTTOM LINE:

Please contact your U.S. representative today and urge him or her to co-sponsor and support H.R. 5534, the Bear Protection Act of 2008.

(by now, we all know who our Rep is and how to contact him/her, right??? So this should be EASY!)

Here is the link to take action (other than just calling/faxing)

    http://capwiz.com/wspausa/issues/alert/?alertid=11109406

and from there you can access other things you can do for other critters via this organization.

    Here's the alert:

    Dear Supporter,

One of the biggest threats faced by bears in the United States today is an illegal yet thriving trade in bear parts, including bear gallbladders. Each year wild bears are killed so that their parts can be sold in Traditional Asian Medicine (TAM) shops in the United States and internationally. In our recent undercover investigation, WSPA found that the trade in intact gallbladders had actually increased since our previous investigation in 2000.

Unfortunately, state laws pertaining to the trade in bear parts are inconsistent and, in some cases, non-existent. The solution is clear: a unifying federal law is the only viable solution for bears.

U.S. Representative Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) recently re-introduced H.R. 5534, the Bear Protection Act of 2008, to protect North American bears. The Act specifically bans the import, export and interstate trade of all bear parts and products, while closing loopholes in existing state laws.

Early findings from WSPA’s investigation led California Fish & Game agents to arrest four merchants at three TAM shops in San Francisco. The individuals were charged with illegally selling bear bile, a felony offense in California. Federal legislation is needed to effectively punish this type of egregious behavior in all 50 states.

Please contact your U.S. representative today and urge him or her to co-sponsor and support H.R. 5534, the Bear Protection Act of 2008.

With your help, we can protect North American bears and end this cruel and unnecessary trade for good.

WSPA USA, Lincoln Plaza, 89 South Street, Suite 201, Boston, MA 02111, 1-800-883-9772 [end of action alert]

It never ends, there are always more things to do; IMO this is one of the most horrendous kinds of animal abuse, AND congressional realization that unified federal law is needed here rather than State by State regulation, can only HELP OUR CAUSE with comparable logic.

MORE LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH . . . .

Thanks for explaining the blocking rule that senators adhere to. It is a strange rule and seems very undemocratic. As you say public exposure is the best cure for this behaviour particularly in the senator's own neck of the woods.
Keep up the good work - you will prevail as you represent what the vast majority of american people believe.
