Barbaro Updates: 528

updates are now here.

Update 3173: Bloodhorse provided some post event coverage from Washington DC: AAHS Rally Draws More Than 100.

Update 3172: Michael Matz trainee Visionaire will be one of the contenders of the Gotham Stakes on Saturday, assuming the weather cooperates: Visionaire to Get Biggest Test in Gotham.

Update 3171: A Wednesday update (a day later) from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:

We will just call this morning wet Wednesday. Luke and I have been working this week with a few of Jose's horses trying to school them with a pony. Until this morning all has gone well but when the cold rain and wind started to come down this morning both Luke and I were reconsidering. I gave a brief mention to Tim as we passed in the barn about the color of the sky and needless to say both Tim and Robbie got soaked. Tim was on Who's Happy and Robbie was riding Rocky. Neither horse looked particularly bothered by the rain but both riders did not look happy. The next set was Robbie on Diva and Tim on Rose Campbell. As we passed on the path everyone was happy being that the rain had briefly given up. Bubble Gum had her ears pricked as she was headed towards the track. Luke was making his way quickly back to the barn and I can only assume the riders made it to the track in the wind because nothing came storming back to the barn. Now the sun is out and although it is a bit breezy the weather has definately improved. Kitty and Two of Wands are both entered to run at the end of the week. I am excited for both of these girls. Kitty will be running for the first time and I can't wait. Wanda showed a lot of promise her last race and I'm sure she has only improved. Gator Nation continues to train and seems to be enjoying life at this time. Paris Night has gone to the track to gallop and seems fine. She is not far from the races now. She is a tall, leggy Louis Quatorze filly and quite a beauty to look at and covers the ground nicely.

Alex Brown is in Washington Lobbying against horse slaughter and I can't wait to hear how everything has gone. Everyone involved have worked tirelessly to resolve this important issue and I thank them for taking their personal time to make this happen. We will try to let you know how things went.

Update 3170: A lovely morning this morning to be back among the horses at Sam Houston Race Park. I had nine sets, six before the break and three after the break. Four of the sets were older horses and five were 2yos. It was nice to get back to riding some of the horses I have been riding for a while. A few of the 2yos went to the gate to stand. They stood well. Throughout the morning I was decompressing from the last couple of days. It was good to reflect. A few people asked me how everything went, so it was fun to talk about the activities and thus the issue of horse slaughter. Each conversation has to help.

The following are a few media articles that were published before the events of the last couple of days:

AAHS to Rally in D.C.
Activists want end to horse slaughter
Biggest ever push by anti horse slaughter lobbyists.

Update 3169: Back in Houston and ready to return to work. This weekend there are two Derby preps. We have the Louisiana Derby which will serve as the second race this year for leading Derby contender Pyro and the first race for Tale of Ekati: Louisiana Derby Should Provide Answers. New York hosts the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct which includes the undeafeated Giant Moon: Undefeated Giant Moon Set for Gotham.

The Derby Pool 2 opens today for future wagering on the Derby. If you plan to bet in the pool, please do not bet until after the Saturday Derby preps assuming they are run before the pool closes at 6 pm on Saturday: War Pass and Pyro Head Derby Pool 2.

Lets continue our momentum, please keep calling and writing.

Good Morning Famblee

Thanks so much to all that walked the halls in Washington and spoke the truth to Congress about HS. We are so proud!!

Back home in my neck of the woods we have seen another heartbreaking example of neglect with the loss of baby Windchill. Barbaro heard his crys and whispered to his earthly angels to find him and show him warmth and love. They took him in and covered him in warm blankets and stayed by his side so that he knew that he mattered to the world.

I am so proud of all of you here for immdiately showing your care and concern and standing by the side of Kathi and Jeff at Raindance Farms. They have been forever changed by this journey as we have been with our time together with Barbaro.

Please consider looking at the WINDCHILL FUNDRAISER effort that Lauri H in MN has sponsored on the DB. SHe has created the most beautiful prize as a gift for this fundraiser. How appropriate to have created this fantastic soft and warm blanket that is inscribed with the favorite words of the FOB. "ACN" Love Barbaro xxxoo. ANOTHER COMFORTABLE NIGHT and ALWAYS COMFORTABLE NOW.

As you all know, Laurie offered this blanket of comfort every night to Barbaro in her nightly "tuck-in's". And now this magical blanket has become a reality for one lucky person that would donate FIVE DOLLARS to the WINDCHILL FOUNDATION. It is a unique opportunity to feel a little bit part of the Barbaro Tuck in's for yourself.

PLease see the thread under the topic GENERAL HORSE RELATED and WINDCHILL FUNDRAISER. This will only be up for raffle for two weeks so that we may begin to help Jeff and Kathi right away and to show them that the FANS OF BARBARO will be among the first in line to help their new efforts with the WINDCHILL FOUNDATION. The Raffle tickets are only FIVE DOLLARS !! There are photos of the blanket in the thread.

Thanks so much for everything that you do for so many good causes everywhere. We hope that you will find this to be a very special way to show your love for Barbaro, Windchill, and Jeff and Kathi as they try to heal thier sad hearts. They too are struggling to find a way to make something good come out of heartbreak.

We know exactly how they feel....

Thanks,
Leslie in MN

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George and all of the rest of the gang in Equine Heaven.

On their behalf:

MORNING POST SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI

STRATEGY FOR THURSDAY MARCH 6 AND FRIDAY MARCH 7

First, we would like to thank everyone who participated in this week's very special event. A huge thanks to those who came to DC and to those that kept those phones and faxes buzzing from the home front! This was truly a team effort and you are all to be commended for a spectacular job!!

It is suggested that you use the remainder of this week contacting the Senators on our high priority list. Remind them that representatives of Americans Against Horse Slaughter were in DC this week and provided their staffs with materials supporting our position regarding the passage of S311. If they have any unanswered questions, please ask them to contact you and tell them that you will provide them with information addressing their concerns.

It is also a good time to call our co-sponsors to say a quick thanks for their continued support.

Also, please let them know that Americans Against Horse Slaughter is a non funded grass roots group of concerned citizens from all over the country and invite them to visit www.americansagainsthorseslaughter.com to find out more about us.

This was a very productive week and after reviewing the results from our meetings, we will revise strategy for next week and march forward!!

Thanks again for everything and remember…..WE ARE BARBARO’s VOICE….let it be heard!!

Welcome back to all that went to DC to fight for the horses. I know you did a great job, thank you .

Good morning, fellow Fans!

I am back from DC and still need to process all that I saw and did and try to remember everyone's name. I met so many wonderful, caring, compassionate advocates for the horses.

Special thanks to Alex, Mary Martin and Lyn Gilbert (Padme) for helping me "break my maiden" with my first call of the day to my own congressman, Tom Allen. We have had assurances that the Congressman will cosponsor and are just waiting for the paperwork to be filed. Yippee!!! After that, we trekked off to represent our Connecticut friends - Robyn Hoffmann, Nancy Goss and many more at Congressman Murphy's office. Lots of help there - Julie, Mayor Bacon and others.

I also want to say I have an entirely new appreciation for what Daryl and the other regulars go through. It's tiring and sometimes grueling work. My virtual hat is off to them.

Okay, now back to my desk to see what's transpired in my absence. I came home to a world encapsulated in ice but today's more moderate temps should take care of that. Many, many roofs have collapsed and more are at risk.

The marine who dropped the puppy off the cliff...should face more than a possible dishonorable discharge.

Good Morning Barbaro

What a beautiful sky last night....the heavens were brightly shining with all of our heavenly friends because they were so happy for what the FOBS did in Washington and on the home front...

And I know God is smiling.

Good Morning Family/Fans of Barbaro

Our momentum is high....let us continue in the spirit of love and compassion and FAX, CALL, EMAIL. We speak for so many, that cannot speak for themselves...so many who have faced neglect abuse, and brutal slayings.

Do it for Barbaro, Fitch, Windchill and so many, more...but let us do it....because it is right...it is American...and because we care.

Remember the rescues, our Fallen Angels, the ones suffering human or animal, our wildlife, and our family of love and compassion.

Have a nice day.

Thank you and good morning Alex.
Tim and Fair Hill...thank you.

###Welcome home Alex and all the FOB's that treked to Washington and poured their hearts out. Job well done, we are so very proud of you all.

Laurie H. what a tuck-in last night, it brought some comfort to my heart and some better images in my mind instead of his heartbreaking life here. Thank you so very much and my contribution to the foundation will be on it's way.

Maritia, you are so very awesome, thank you for your post last night, just beautiful.

Have a good day everyone,

Will be leaving shortly for the retreat and my beloved Berkshires...am still processing everything that happened in DC. You are all the greatest. I don't know if anybody felt an energy shift last night, but if you felt kind of "different" around 7-7:30 pm EST, that shift is what was happening.

###
Just got off the phone with the publishing co...and "Cassidy" will be ready next week for release. I priced it a little higher than I planned. Along with the story are links (yes, I've included ABR...how could I leave the famblee off??? I can't...)to get further info on horse rescue/equine welfare issues. When I get back from the retreat, I'll post ordering info. It will be on Amazon/Barnes & Noble in 4-6 weeks and I'll post those dates as well. Website should be up in 2 weeks and I'll set up a Wiki page next week.

###
LaurieH, when I get back, I'll send a check for the Windchill fund-raiser. Your tuck-in had me in tears.

###
Martita, you also had me crying with your beautiful words. Keep healing, dearest one.

Will catch up on Sunday night.

Would someone mid directing me to a list of the HIGH PRIORITY SENATORS for today?

I hope all the Pilgrims are/were able to grab a little well-earned rest after the DC trip. I heard from many of The Leetle Aides I called yesterday that they had indeed seen our peeples in the halls.

I suggested that in the absence of any answers to their questions they could ask one of the peeple wearing the AMERICANS AGAINST HORSE SLAUGHTER apparel.

Our presence was really felt up there, and now we just need to keep plugging in forward motion.

The WJZ coverage was GREAT. I did not watch the slaughter video because, well, last night I just could stand it. I have seen them all, I think, and sometimes, well, I just can't. But if it has--in any way--graphic content, I imagine the nice, civilized folk on the Beltway felt the pain.

And that's good too. It certainly is a terrible thing to see the first time.

Anyhow:
Once more: POSTERS
Here's why: we can put them in our car windows. We can post them at our Vets, our grocery stores, our feed mills, our pet shops--our front doors.
I personally don't think we can have too much exposure....

SO on we go: somebody please locate that thar list for me, and I will just be a very happy girl.

Good Thursday Morning, ABR Famblee:)

I'll re-post something I 'said' late last night for the returning Barbaro Warriors:)

Hi Famblee:)
I just want to say a BIG *WELCOME HOME* to all who traveled to the *HILL* FOR OUR AMERICAN HORSES!!

I can only imagine the adrenal rushes yole must have been experiencing....all those steps in the Hallowed Halls of Congress and Senate!! All the peeples you met and spoke with as well as all the peeples there, like you, trying to speak to those 'powers that be' about 'their own stuff'....GOSH! What an experience yole had...and I think it's safe to say here, all because of *BARBARO*, I mean how many of you would have thought just a year or so ago, you'd be galloping the *HILL* in DC?!

I cannot WAIT to hear from each of you...we want to hear EVERY detail! WE ARE PROUD OF EVERY ONE OF YOU....and THANK YOU for ALL you have done there!!

We worked hard here at 'home', too...we 'smoked' the phone lines, as well as those stinkin fax machines:) We pulled our hairs out sometimes...just when we thought we might be finished, well....OOPS....another 'URGENT REQUEST' arrived via e-mail!! We DUG IN, we strained our brains....we e-mailed, we called those 800 numbers, we wrote letters and sent them through the phone lines....we sent everyone we know e-mails asking for their help and the help of their famblee and friends, too!

We may never make the Nightly News with our efforts, maybe the whole world won't know what we have done, but the peeps in DC KNOW!!! I cannot imagine we didn't make some impression there!!! :)

So, sleep well tonight at home in your own beds, with your spouses or your furkids cuddled up with you and tomorrow PLEASE post here and tell ALL:)

WELCOME HOME WARRIORS....FANS OF BARBARO...FRIENDS OF THE HORSES.....WELCOME HOME!

March 5 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Remember when you do anything there will be someone that will find fault, no matter what you do. The pleasure of an unhappy person is to find something wrong in others to salve his own discontent. The Cherokees believe that tests sharpen their wit and help them a s qua dv, win or triumph over opposite powers. It would be beneath them to accept criticism as something they must overcome. The Cherokees flick it off like to si, pesky mosquitoes. We all try to understand our differences of opinion, to care what effect we cause in other people. But the bane of anyone's existence is ignorance---our own. We want more than anything to correct what we know is wrong. And what we find wrong in others may be a reflection of our own wrongs.

May the white man and the Indian speak truth to each other today.

Blackfoot.

WELCOME HOME TROOPS, WELCOME HOME

Marge, congrats on your efforts with Tom Allen. Who knows if he ever would have stepped up without FOBs personal visit. I am so proud of you guys.

Can't wait to hear more. Even though I read that report at "againstslaughter" that phone were'nt ringing, I knew it couldn't be true cause we were all here, in the House That Barbaro Built, burning up the wires, hearing busy tones and full VMs.

MAY THE HORSE BE WITH YOU

JOE FOR TODAY: A regular smorgasbord of horses for
new homes.....
*************************************************
Thursday, March 6th... How come each weekend brings bad weather? More rain on the way, and we are just drying out. Event trainers, and those who hope to adopt horses are waiting for a nice Saturday or Sunday. But every weekend is either rain or monster winds. A wee bit difficult to saddle up and ride while a hurricane is going on. It is enough to send a person straight to the bakery department at Costco...

I must use this space to air some messages, sorry. Catching up on e-mails from when our telephone lines were down, and a few of my letters have been returned. No such address.

The girl who calls herself Pony1234, I have someone who would love to help you and your mom. You can phone me at 530-383-2120. Do not be shy.

The girl who lives in San Francisco and goes to the library, you can take the Bart train to Concord, and I will have someone pick you up. No big deal.

Claire in Idaho I lost your mailing address, sorry. Tim Gee pulled the racing shoes from Brat Cat, and I have them ready for shipping.

There are 3 well cared for and rideable thoroughbreds near the town of Marysville who need a home. If you are able to help give me a call at 530-383-2120.

A grandpa thoroughbred gelding living in Sacramento badly needs a new home by Sunday. If not he goes to an auction in Roseville. He is free.

A pregnant quarter horse mare badly needs a new home by Sunday. If not she goes to an auction in Roseville. She is free.

And Jessica who lives in Gilroy, I hope the riding lessons are going well. Give me a call when you feel ready for a thoroughbred.

A gray stallion came to us yesterday from the race track, and his name is Gold Label. He is a hunk. A big Thank You to Steve at Hoofbeats for providing the transportation. Also yesterday we said goodbye to On Top Of Old Smokey, an older quarter horse gelding who left for Granite Bay. Peggy Sue has been lonely since she lost her long time companion, and Smokey is just what the doctor ordered. A big Thank You to Holly Meeks for providing the transportation.

We would like to send a special Thank You to Natasha Vadnais in Southern California. Also Carol Gomulka who lives in New Jersey. Kerry Lowell and her husband Todd from a town called Cotati, California. Gene & Ann Curcio in Washington. We Thank Leslie Bonnette in Arizona. Jamie & Casie Malone who live in Sebastopol, California. A big Thank You to Anne and Robert. Dakota Blue. Patti Lu. Diane in Rio Linda. So good to hear from you Bonnie Buron who lives in Florida. Jerri & Stephen Hardy in Vacaville. D.J.Meaden in Reno. Alexis Mechan, Thank You very much. Bryan & Mellisa Goldwyn. Mary Frazier, you are awesome. Jamie Watkins. Stephanie Breaux. Susie Ingersoll. The girl who calls herself Horsequeen 08, I love your letters. A big Thank You to Elaine Garrison and Henry Martin. You made our day.

And there are letters saying way to go Joe and Cathy, saving all those horses. Which made me think of our friends who do so much without fanfare. Without recognition. All the time they save horses without boring others by writing a morning journal. Nikki in Vacaville saves the life of at least one horse a month. 15 total horses Nikki rescued and rehomed in 2007. Cheryl Rankin in Auburn saves horses like I save coupons for ice cream. Cheryl is taking in a pregnant mare this weekend, and she is constantly saving foals with no where to go. Jodi Tuft in Dixon saves horses and asks for no help. There is Aljean in Rescue. Yes a town called Rescue. There is Megan in Fairfield, and last week Megan saved a gorgeous Hannoverian mare who was less than an hour from being destroyed. Sarah McDowell saves animals like I save coupons for pie. Stephanie Diaz went to the race track and saw a little bay broken down gelding who was going to be euthanized that day. Only a broken knee, no cause for death, so Stephanie brought him home and you should see how he loves her. There is Kitty who lives in Pleasanton. Michelle in Roseville. Rachel in Oakland. All saving horses, all without attention to themselves.

We might be 68 degrees today. The Dish TV repairman comes to fix our signal. 4 days without television, and the withdrawal process is not easy. Enjoy your beautiful Thursday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

Bottom left is Gold Label, he is still a stallion, and he came to us from the race track yesterday. His barn name is Goldie. A gray horse named Goldie. We have had a chestnut horse named Blue. And a black horse named Red. Probably more info than you ever wanted to know.

The remaining photos are by request.

Top right is the old mare Gracie, who has lived with us for 3 years. Gracie is missing her right eye, and she has recently gone blind in her left eye. She is adjusting well to her handicap.

Bottom row are stakes winners. Bottom left is Bert, and we call him Bert because his sire is Bertrando.

Bottom right is Memo, a little guy, but he earned big time money.

NEW COSPONSOR IN HOUSE

Don't know if this is reported yet - excerpt from an email from Stephanie Breax, forwarded to me by Lenny Hall:

Hi Everyone:

We got a new cosponsor in the House yesterday: Michael Burgess (TX). Yippeee! Hopefully we will have more sign on after the DC lobbying trip is over.

Posted by: C. Jaffe at March 6, 2008 4:43 PM

Dearest Frens:

I'm not sure why this is hitting now, but I cannot think about HS anymore. Maybe just for today. We will see what tomorrow brings.

I got myself so psyched for the DC push. So frustrating NOT being able to attend. Just stay here and pray and phone...but I did all that and more. No tears, just a dead voice by the end of the days

I went from Windchill's astonishing death to that. And I still held my head together. I have so much sorrow about that little horse who tried so hard....whose body fought so hard to live. RIght now, I just feel like a vengeful angel: I want sorrow and misfortune to rain down on those people who KNEW what was happening, and my God, they just looked the other way. They just stopped their ears. At this age, I don't personally believe those people deserve to live.

Windchill's courage: didn't we all think he'd be running out of that stall one day to graze with Kisses and Sunday? My God.

It was a lot like Barbaro, in some ways. I really thought that I would someday put my hand on that big bay colt. He'd be older then, mellowed out. I wanted to see the mystery in his beautiful eyes with my own eyes. He would be alive, Standing at stud/not standing at stud. who cares. He would be alive.

Well, so much for that dream.

And today, this flyer from the Angel folks in Canada...you know, I cannot tell you how many times I have stared at pictures, videotape, film of similar pit loaded with greyhounds. 16 years of the evil of dog racing.

Necropsies done at random on many of these dogs showed sand/dirt in their throats, tracheas, lungs. They were buried while still alive.

God knows how those poor creatures in Canada met their ends: probably just hung up, throats slit and exanguenated (sp) while still conscious.

When I get like this, my dear Frens, I do not understand why God does not just smote the people responsible. I feel like a little child, so sure that God would in some miraculous way intercede.

Crying up a storm now, maybe that's what I needed to do in the first damned place when Windchill died. I am so sad. Yole know I get this way from time to time...so just excuse me for a few days.

If I had the time, the help, the money, I'd fly away South and just love on Kathy's Sophie. I need to think about LIFE. Not DEATH, death, death.

Trying to have COURAGE: j

MY FAMBLEE IN bArbaro.....

A beautiful horse, *SIERRA* has arrived at Safe Haven for Horses, she needs ALOTSA HAY and other good food/care....

Our Sister, Cathy Potter, has been kind enough to post pictures of this girl on the DB...Discussion Number 20496.1

I received these pics this early morning here in the West Wing from Linda Richards, owner/operator of Safe Haven for Horses....I believe they are now at 44 horses!!! They REALLY could use our HELP if anyone has some spare dollars for HAY....they are accepting "TIPS FOR HAY"....can you help this beautiful girl....I'll post a partial of Linda's e-mail here:

We got in 2 more horse's today. One is very underweight. A sweet arab mare named Sierra. The other is a Appy mare named Cheyanne, she is in good shape. I think Sierra was being run off her food.
She does not have to worry about that any more.

We also got a buckskin QH gelding in Saturday named Bandit that is also very underweight.

They both will need a lot of TLC and good, nutritious food to bring them back to good health.

They are both very sweet, they have such gentle eyes that say Thank You for taking me in and taking care of me.

We will all need as much help as possible to bring these horse back to good health.

##

Thanks in advance, Famblee for any help you might be able to offer....thank you!!

non-horse action alerts (IMO of interest to FOBs)

I've posted two urgent action alerts to the DB in the "General - Non Horse related" folder -

"Wilderness Action Alert - Save Alaska Refuge"

"Action Alert - Save Yellowstone's Bison"

If you can, pls take a moment to go there and take action (hotlinks provided for sending messages to appropriate govt agencies). THANKS!

Dear Jonna,

Reflecting to your post. You have every reason to feel the way you do. Don't forget we saw and see the sadness of the greys and we know what happens to them it is also horrific, barbaric and tragic.

We are involved with these beloved horses we also see and know what is going on with this horrific act taken against them.We touch, smell and rescue them.

If you are like me I want to save them all from any kind of harm. We can't but hunny we sure can try like hell.

Windchill bless his sweet soul broke me up I have not been the same since and have walked around teary eyed and heavy hearted ever since. I remember posting his story here.

We see the world differently than those who are not involved our emotions take a beating and we are exhausted. We fight the evil tyrants with good loving hearts.

You are not alone in your way of feeling and thinking I am sitting right next to you my fren.

KATHY IN SC (cross-posted from the Forum)

"This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." (Psalm 118)

I must confess that I have had no ability to rejoice since February 29th, but TODAY indeed is such a day. God willing and the creek don't rise, our beloved Windchill's earthly remains will be back home with Jeff and Kathi tonight ~ back to the place where he knew love, and peace, and caring, and warmth; where he was free from the ravages of the cold and where his hungry body was fed and his failing spirit was nourished. Since we were not blessed with the outcome for which we all prayed and hoped, indeed THIS DAY is our blessing.

WELCOME HOME, WINDCHILL!

Hay Fambleee

welcome home, all our Warriors. Can't wait to hear more about your travels and triumphs. and THANK YOU!!!

Jonna, dear Jonna, how I feel you. It's just unbearable at times, isn't it? Have tried so many times to analyze The Human Who Commits Unspeakable Cruelty. Can't do it. Have had the same discussion with God MANY, MANY times. Why, dear God, do these horrors continue? WHY? Why aren't you THERE, God? The answer hasn't come to me yet, and probably won't in this lifetime, but maybe after. Like you, Windchill is for me a huge setback in my place with the sordid part of this universe. Like little Fitch, Apache, Ho'Pats Mia, Mercedes, Nicky, Cowboy, and the exquisite White Mare. Countless others. The unborn ones who end up as parts of heaps of guts on the floors of the slaughterhouses. The foals who end up left behind after being dropped by their mothers before they are loaded onto trucks. It's enough to make one's head explode. There are times when I can soooooooo enjoy my little sponsored babies, both of whom were floor-foals, as they are now so loved. Then Windchill's cries in the frozen pasture erupt in my head. Seeing him happily eating his food, lying down covered in his blankets smother out all other visions. It kills me SisterGirlfren. So I cry and cry until for whatever reason, I stop.

The cycle never ends, does it. Then one day I'll jump on here and read a post you've written, and I'm laughing my head off. That's part of the cycle, too, and I guess as long as we're here for the duration, we'll continue to go round and round.

Always here, hand stretched out across the miles

Hello to all you wonderful Fans of Barbaro. Thanks to all those that went to DC to help our horses. We appreciate all your hard work. You are remembering Barbaro and showing your love for him.

My baby sister, Debbie LA, and her husband flew out to Vienna, Italy yesterday. Wayne for a business trip, and Debbie for the ride. Our sister July and her husband, Tony went with them to keep Deb company while Wayne attends meetings. They will be gone for eight days, and on the way back, will have a day in Paris, then on to Vancouver for another business meeting. I am so proud of Debbie, she works very hard on the horse slaughter issue.
She is very determined, and talks about it to all she sees. Debbie got me interested in race horses when Barbaro was on the road to the Kentucky Derby. She called to tell me that this young horse had won all his races, and was going to be in the Kentucky Derby. She wanted me to watch him. I did and fell in love with Barbaro. I love him still.

Love to you all,

Gloria

Joan Roya, thank you. I'll never give up. At the very darkest moments, SOMETHING will shake me. It might be my dear DH, one of my silly furlegged children, my beloved frens, the sunrise/sunset, a tiny sparrow, a mare and foal, doe and fawn, or like this morning, two tiny fox kits having a great old time by the lake. They are EARLY this year. There's always something, and as the song says, and that is why I believe.

I believe for every drop of rain that falls

I believe that somewhere in the darkest night
A candle glows.
I believe for everyone who goes astray
Someone will come to show the way.
I believe,
I believe.
I believe above the storm
The smallest prayer, will still be heard.
I believe that Someone in that great somewhere
Hears every word
Every time I hear a newborn baby cry,

Or see the sky,
Then I know why I believe."

I arrived home a little while ago and there were 2 boxes waiting for me in the kitchen. I knew what they were but was so excited to get them opened. I took my scissors to cut through the packing tape, opened the lids, removed the packing material and there she was........RUFFIAN in all her glory. Repeated the process with the second box and there was RAGS. Two beautiful Breyer models.

They are beautiful!!!!. I guess I'd never really seen one of these because they are so much bigger than I thought they would be. I am soooooooooo stoked to have them. Now the decision is to remove them or keep them in their pristeen state boxed????

These were the prizes from MHR's February's Hay Drive and for the price of a few tickets, knowing the money goes for Hay......WOW!!!!

To the anonymous donor of these models.....thank you. They are home.

Hiya, FsOB! I concur with so many here today. The passing of Windchill really devastated me last weekend. I knew from the scientific standpoint that he was fighting against incredible odds. But he really seemed to "be like Barbaro." Both of them fought the good fight, but Windchill's circumstances were so preventable. I am appalled to think that owners of any animal could stand by and ignore a freezing creature. I mentioned Windchill when I called TB Friends the other day, to thank Joe Shelton personally for all that he and his wife do. I told him that I say repeatedly that the two of them, and all of you, renew my faith in humanity. But I agree, it's been draining for me since last Saturday. I skipped exercising tonight and even had dessert and a glass of wine. May we all have restful slumbers tonight, we deserve them. Peace, RMH

#### To Gloria Davis: Your sister, Debbie LA, is an absolutely delightful person, so committed and caring. May she, her husband, and your other sister and brother-in-law have a superb trip to Europe.
To Jonna: Please take it easy, dear FOB, and bask in GH love and enjoy some Cherry Garcia tonight.
To Marg in ME: Face-to-face political advocacy is an interesting experience, isn't it? Mine has all been on a State, rather than Federal level. But it can be draining and I respect those who can do it continuously.
To Alex: Excellent quotes in Bloodhorse, kudos to our guru Alex! ####

Great articles, Alex.

Cathy, I know you will enjoy those wonderful girls. Every night, say good night to them for us.

I got the pics of Her Sophieness. I could almost reach out and touch her. Instead, my monitor is soaked with sloppy kiss prints again.

Zara is still in the hospital. I don't know what the name of the hospital is. It is in Telford, PA. The family goes to visit her twice a day. They have private living rooms so you can spend alone time with your pet. The doctor will manually move the cath around. Right now it is still tight, but if it loosens a bit, they will know the med is shrinking the tumor. We are all praying for her. And hoping she will be home Saturday.

I am also hoping Windchill will be home soon. No word yet on the site.

Jonna, Joe at TBFriends is a great antidote for what you are feeling. We have all been there. I get great strength from Joe. He sees it all and yet, like the energizer bunny, he just keeps going and going and going and saving horses one after another after another. And his will and strength to keep saving horses and telling others about it spreads the saving of horses around the world.

When horse slaughter depression and burn-out hits, I recommend Joe.

Take care,
Joy

Cathy Potter:) My advice...put those beauties out where you can see and enjoy them!!!

Put those boxes in a safe place in a closet somewhere they won't get 'beat up'....that way, you can always see your beautiful girls:) and the boxes will be safe/sound until some day comes you decide to box them up again:)

Thanks again, Cathy, for posting the pics for me this morning....:)xoxo

For Erin with love....

sometimes
as the horizon closes in
on the landscapes we cherish
and hold close

a hidden path emerges
that we know we must take
have to take
and we realize that this way
is full of hard little stones
against the softest parts of our tender feet
looking for a steady place
to rest
---------------------------------------------------------------
as windchill's ashes make their way to his home
in the barn
dark has settled across the land

a little girl
ERIN
struggles to come to terms with
an ensuing battle forming right now
to save her
this is the time then

to light a candle and look at the glass half full
of searing pain visited from a chair
me a lioness used to moving in a million ways
now mute for a while
as i sit in the dark
as it all heals
and knits
so i can reflect
and learn about the other side
to have a handle
on what others must go through

i DO NOT ALWAYS
understand
why the good and dear
have to suffer
and die from this earth so young and so soon
foals and fillies even cats and dogs..whales and dolphins elephants
and leopards
like become star dust
all at once before our eyes
and our breath can give a catch
so tight
constricting
the consequences of some invisible fate
that deals out a hand so
brutal and in effect
'that all is suddenly done
ha
good bye
all done
here on earth'\
i can not imagine then the pain
for so many i have met on this board
who have lost and suffered and re grown parts
of themselves
to make a new life

the thunder of holy dirt
how he loved to run

how hearts flew open
that had been closed
for years

maybe we hide parts that were torn to shreds
by some unkind hand long ago
but now under the dawn
to come
'that little girl will be laid out on
a steel table
metal instruments
and kind caring
skilled surgeons will try
one last shot

i dont know what to say
i can pray

but to reach for my tears and spread them out
over velvet fields tonight
to ask for all to hold some hands
make a circle big and wide
and raise hearts up
to invoke
the love that gathered
broken bones of fitch and little starved nick and windchill
and yes i also hear those
those who just have not anything to fall back upon
but an empty sapce ehre the ehart should be
but instead a cold figure
filled with things
i guess that might be part mix of
power and greed

lord shine down upon us tonight and make that alfalfa hay
shine in beautiful stalks across the sky
a bridge of
tender shoots that many a dear horse
will love and chew and chew

and the softest of blankets spread over ERIN
tonight tonight

Back from DC, with gratefulness to those who helped organize the event, those who were there, AND to those who supported the ones who were able to go by contributing in so many ways from wherever you were! Your presence was felt!

I thought it might be intimidating, but I just felt like an American who was making her voice heard. I was impressed by the commitment, knowledge, and camaradarie of people coming from so many places, walks of life, and perspectives, but with one common cause. What an opportunity and privilege we had.

If time allows, I will post a bit more tomorrow either here or on the DB/forum, perhaps with some pictures even! :)

P.S. I have to say...the biggest "star" I came in contact with was Nala, the wonderful dog who made the long journey with her mom, Barb M. from Florida. Even with cancer history and losing a front leg, Nala is one of the most joyous dogs I have ever met, with a strong will and a loving heart - much like her mom (and the whole Florida contingent in attendance!). I have a feeling Nala would have walked the halls of Congress if it were allowed!

Just when I thought I was "over" it, I found this message at Windchill's home site - www.raindancefarmsusa.com and it absolutely did me in. Wanted to share this with you all. (Sorry if a duplication.)

March 2nd, 9:01pm: While cleaning Windchill's stall we found a notebook. In it was a letter he had 'dictated' to one of his caregivers. It was a note he wanted to send to all of the children who had written him:

March 2, 2008: When we were cleaning Windchill's stall, we found a notebook we had somehow missed. More than likely when Windchill was kicking around he probably ended up laying on top of it and so we didn't find it until later. What many of you may not know is that horses, like many animals, are very smart. They communicate with us in different ways. Sometimes those that they can communicate with are called 'horse whisperers.' More than likely one of the horse whisperers working with Windchill copied down his thoughts for him and forgot to tell us. I know Windchill would want to know we gave all the kids that had written to him his note back to them. I know he would also want them to know that he died very peacefully. It was very quick and it occurred in his sleep so he felt no pain and no suffering - he went to sleep knowing that children loved him and that made him very, very happy.

Dear littler people,

I wanted to thank all of you for the cards and letters and pictures. I asked one of those that care for me to send you back my feelings and he promised that he would.

Your love and caring for me made me feel special. They made me feel warm inside and filled up a place in me that had been left empty.

Sometimes it feels like big people don't hear what you say, doesn't it? I hope your big people do - they must if they let you send me all those pretty pictures. I lived someplace they didn't hear me but then somebody did. They brought me to a warm place. They fed me. They held me like I hope your big people do with you. They told me that they loved me. And then they showed me your words and your pictures and I learned that kids like you see things like I do. So I was not alone. That made me very happy which made me feel even warmer inside.

Thank you for telling me you loved me and making me feel so much better. I will always remember that you cared and it will become a part of who I am deep in my heart. And you know what - now that I know the words I can say them back to you - I love you too.

Your friend forever,

Windchill
