Barbaro Updates: 527

updates are now here.

Update 3168: Two days of lobbying and one evening reception and I'm absolutely knackered. That being said, it was an exhilarating experience to meet with various Congressmen and Senators aides to talk about an issue that is something to really believe in. All my appointments today, some scheduled and some simply by stopping by, were on the Senate side. I met the Senators staff from North Carolina (Jill was our constituent and made those appointments). We met with Senator Reid's staffer. Senator Reid, the Senate Democratic Leader, controls the calendar (when/if S311 will go to a vote). We met with Senator Cardin's (MD) staffer. Joanne was our constituent. We also met with Tom Carper's (DE) staffer. We had a very fruitful discussion. This was one of our unscheduled meetings. Finally we swung by Senator Craig's office to understand the hold he placed on S311. While we were unable to meet with anybody (this was an unscheduled drop in) we have the necessary contact information to follow-up. All in all for me it was a very fulfilling two days and thanks for today's company Jill, Joanne, and Judith. This was just today's events for four people. There were many more of us doing the same thing for the horse.

Update 3167: A link to WJZ's coverage of yesterday's events: Horse Lovers Ask Congress to Stop Horse Slaughter

Update 3166: A lovely Wednesday morning in Washington DC. Bright sunshine and mid 50's. Yesterday's events seemed to have been a very positive experience for many of us that came to Washington from parts near and far. It was great to see so many here that were lobbying for the first time alongside those that have been lobbying for the horse slaughter issue for many years. There was definitely a sense among everybody here that we were being heard and it was simply exciting to engage in dialogue over an issue we all care about very much. The evening reception brought everybody together and it was great to listen to presentations from Animal Angels, Canadian Horse Defense Coalition, Return to Freedom, Animal Welfare Institute, HSUS, John Holland, Jennifer Morasca and Terri Farley. The greatest response however was reserved for Paul Sorvino whose passion and commitment to this issue was clearly evident as he noted his ambitions to engage other celebrities in this fight. A great day was had by all as we now prepare for our second day of lobbying in Washington DC.

Update 3165: Back in Washington, had a lunch meeting that included Paul Sorvino, Jennifer Morasca, Terri Farley, John Holland and WJZ from Baltimore among others. Let's hope for a little media coverage during this evenings news. Subsequent to that I attended one more meeting with Congressman Shuler's staffer from North Carolina. I went along with Jill who is a constituent and we had a constructive 45 minute conversation. Now I'm heading over to the hotel to prepare for the reception whilst everyone continues with their meetings.

In other news Brett Favre retires after 17 seasons

Update 3164: Superfecta here, with your regular weekly update.

The Derby trail heats up this weekend with the Louisiana Derby; Pyro is back (and even has his own Wikipedia entry) and faces Majestic Warrior and Tale of Ekati, both of whom I have very much been looking forward to seeing. Blackberry Road seems to be a cut below the top class, but you never know what might happen at this time of year -- note Absolutely Cindy's upset in the Battaglia last weekend.

But how did these promising three-year-olds make it to this point? That's the question the Blood-Horse's Nicanor blog hopes to answer. I think this is a good marketing move for the Blood-Horse (yes, sometimes I do say Good Things about the industry!) to continue to cultivate newcomers brought to the sport by Barbaro's story, but it's quite a lot for him to live up to. Given that his other elder half brother Holy Ground (frankly, not the most attractive stallion in the world) stands for $3500 and Man in Havana (more of a looker, if not a runner) was unraced, the odds are not on his side as far as superhorse potential, but Hasili and Better Than Honour (soon to be bred back to AP Indy after aborting another AP Indy foal earlier this year) demonstrate that some mares just have it. In any case, it should be good fun watching a well-bred colt work toward his debut, but hopefully expectations will be kept within the realm of reasonable.

Breeders' Cup president Greg Avioli responded to some of the criticism surrounding Ladies' Day, although he still does not address the question of how a Friday slot is anything but a demotion for a great race (particularly since those of us who can afford to bet tend to be employed). I've said many times I am in favor of making some changes, but ghetto-izing the filly and mare races is not the way to go. Were the Breeders' Cup run over a real weekend, including Saturday and Sunday, I would be very supportive of the new endeavor. In the meantime, here's hoping they keep trying...

Update 3163: I drove down with Lyn Gilbert early this morning leaving Tim's barn a little after 6 o'clock. After struggling with rush hour traffic we arrived at Longworth Building Cafe at about 9:30. There was a group of fellow lobbyist planning for their next meetings and at 10:30 I went with 3 others to my first meeting which appeared to be quite successful. It's now lunch time, have completed 2 meetings and enjoying watching everyone enthusiastically preparing for their own meetings. More to report later but thus far it appears to be a very positive experience for everybody that I've talked to.

Update 3162: Pyro, who had his final preparation for Saturday's Louisiana Derby on Monday, will be the likely favorite for Saturday's race. Barclay Tagg will be represented by Breeders' Cup fourth place finisher Tale of Ekati: Pyro Early Favorite in Louisiana Derby.

Please keep calling and faxing and supporting Americans Against Horse Slaughter.

Good luck today! I teach third grade and have young children and couldn't get away from North Carolina, but my thoughts and prayers go with all of you who are going as part of Americans against horse slaughter.

My thoughts and prayers are with all those great Americans Against Horse Slaughter who will be lobbying in Washington to get the anti-slaughter laws passed. This is going to be the year we get it passed. This is the Horse's year to prevail.
Thank you, everyone!!!! We appreciate your huge efforts in this and we know you'll make us proud!

Hiya, FsOB, and may the Force be with everyone who is in DC this week! I wish I could've been there, but my work and budget don't permit a trip right now. (Ask those people to do something for the price of home heating oil and gasoline while you're at it!) Here's to a productive and successful day. Peace, RMH

#### To Jonna: You may want to ask your PCP to write you a DME order for a home blood pressure kit and stethoscope so that you may check it and log it daily.
To Maribel: Sending good thoughts your way. I hope that you are able to get your echocardiogram promptly. ####

URGENT ACTION ALERT!

LAST CHANCE TO END HORSE SLAUGHTER IN THE US!

IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED TO ENSURE PASSAGE OF THE AMERICAN HORSE
SLAUGHTER PREVENTION ACT

Dear Friends,

Since it was reintroduced in January 2007, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 311 - HR 503), a bill to ban the slaughter of US horses and their exportation for slaughter abroad, has been waiting to be brought up for consideration in both the Senate and the House where it was denied due process by a group of pro-slaughter legislators who believe the profits of three foreign-owned horse slaughter plants outweigh the welfare and safety of American horses and horse owners alike.

This group of legislators, led by Senator Larry Craig (R – Idaho), has successfully blocked the bill in the Senate, preventing it from being
even debated on the floor using procedural means and hiding behind a plethora of myths and fabricated stories to support a “need for horse
slaughter” while tens of thousands of American horses continue to be exported for slaughter in Canada and Mexico under appalling conditions.

As the legislative deadline of mid-September set up by the upcoming elections approaches, the need to get the AHSPA passed increases dramatically, making necessary to launch an all-out counterattack to break the pro-slaughter blockade on the bills and proceed to their consideration
in the corresponding chambers. If the AHSPA is not at least passed by the Senate before mid-September it will die since there would not be
enough time in the brief “lame duck” session taking place after the elections to move it through the rest of the legislative process, forcing us to start all over from zero next year and spelling doom for tens of thousands of additional horses that will be cruelly slaughtered abroad until we have another chance.

To this end, horse owners and enthusiasts from all over the United States will gather in Washington DC next March 4 and 5 to lobby their
elected officials in a desperate effort to break Sen. Craig’s blockade on the AHSPA and expedite its passage in both chambers.

In order to be effective, we need to show a massive grass roots support for those lobbying the legislators on Capitol Hill and let them know
that Americans want the AHSPA passed as soon as possible to end this sordid trade. It is extremely important that as many people as possible contact their Representatives and Senators urging them to cosponsor S.
311 and HR 503 if they have not yet done so and requesting them to press the Senate leadership and to set S. 311 free from Sen. Craig’s
blockade.

How you can help

During next Tuesday, March 4th and Wednesday, March 5th please contact as many times as possible both your two US Senators and all the
Representatives of your state requesting them to:

a) Cosponsor S. 311 (Senators) or HR 503 (Representatives) in case they have yet done so.

b) Ask the Senate Leadership to do everything possible to break Sen. Craig’s blockade on S. 311 and expedite its passage in both chambers.

If they are already cosponsoring the bills, please praise them for doing so and request them to keep their support commitment to the end.

Also, please forward this action alert to all your contacts, relatives, friends, work and school partners asking them to follow it and contact their respective Congressional delegations in support of the AHSPA. The more people contact Congress the more chances we have to get the AHSPA passed!

Please see the DB for an updated phone and fax directory for the 110th Congress showing
information about whether they cosponsored or not as well how they voted in the past on legislation to outlaw horse slaughter in the US

You can also find your legislators and additional information on horse slaughter and the AHSPA on the Strategy for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday thread of the DB under Anti Slaughter.

Please remember this is virtually the last chance we have to lobby Congress to get the bill passed before it is too late: If S. 311 is not at least passed by the Senate by mid-September we can take it for dead, forcing us to start from scratch next year and dooming without recourse tens of thousands of American horses to horrible, agonizing deaths in Canadian and Mexican slaughter plants. Therefore, it is vitally important we employ all the resources we have available to flood Congress with a continuous stream of calls and faxes during those two days. Their lives depend on us.

Thank you for your help.

Good morning all you Barbaro Warriors! I hope yole are staring out with a GOOD BREAKFAST. (This is what my mother would say, (cough, cough.)

I have a doc appt that has been on the books for months--just like Canada, eh, Maribel? Anyhow. I will have to creep along the roads, per our local weather peeps.

Yesterday, 57, this morning, snow, rain and fog and about 30 degrees....never a dull moment in Syracuse.

Anyhow, once I get home, I will hit the phone.
Sending out lots of Estrogen Power to the majority of FoBs: and for the guys, just give'em hell.
I know you guys will be great: can you imagine everyone being enchanted with UnkleAlex's accent...

They'll pay attention during his Beanie presentation tonight. Damn, though, wouldn't it be grand to fill these Peeples with hor d'ouvres
tonight and then, lock the doors and show them The Videos. Wouldn't that be a messy situation....

Anyhow. Be well, be inspired by all those we've saved, all those we've lost.

Two years ago, I though Heaven was overrun with retired racers. Now I know they are being kept company by "retired" TBs and so many other horses.

We are the only ones who can do this. Courage for all in DC, and for all of us keeping the home fires going while yole are gone...

Posted by: jonna at March 4, 2008 12:48 PM

Sending out comfort and strength to Jeff, Kathi and all of Windchill's frens in WI. We've got your back, for as long as you need us.

I will try to reach ADA Lovejoy again today. If I cannot, I'll just verify her address, and get fax numbers etc from the admin people there...

Courage: jonna

Best wishes for a successful lobby. I shall be supporting you in spirit from across the water in the UK.
How is it possible for a minority of legislators to block a debate on horse slaughter. It seems very undemocratic! Hopefully your lobby will expose these people and lead to a change.

Few things that count in life are taken by great strides. Little by little, step by step, we inch forward. Great progress in a short time is so often short-lived and gives us the wrong idea of how things work. We build a consciousness, use good judgment, di gu go ta nv, in Cherokee, to move slowly and with awareness. But as we build, it is important to override the negatives that try to lodge in what we are doing. Our thinking is like a garden that needs to be cultivated. And our talking is even more important. The two go i tsu la, hand in hand, and what happens is a direct result of what we have dwelled on for many seasons. Maribel: yes, I should have mentioned that the benefits of universal healthcare are wonderful, even if you have to wait. I paid $80 out of pocket yesterday for tetanus shot and exam at an Urgent Care center, and today, I go to the dermatologist for my yearly inspection (lots of skin cancer issues in my family) and god know what that will cost....
No prescription coverage, etc etc.

My primary care doc will give me whatever she can in samples, thank god for that. Anyhow. Off in the van with this stupid March weather, ah, it is ever thus...

May our legislators also hear the voices of their constituents, as represented by members of Americans Against Horse Slaughter, and finally realize that the American people want an end this reprehenisble practice NOW!

You all probably received this from Michelle but for anybody who needs a template:

Hi everyone,

Attached is a template of the letter I sent to my representatives in Congress re: S311:
Please feel free to edit this for the correspondence that is sent to your representatives -

For the Horses,
Michelle

*************

Dear ____________:

You may be aware of the organized "lobby" effort in Washington today and tomorrow (March 4-5, 2008) by many of us who greatly oppose the slaughter of U.S. horses.

You may also be aware Senator Larry Craig stated he plans to block this Bill should it come to the floor for a vote.

We need Senator _________'s support for Bill S311 now more than ever. This would be the right time to give serious consideration to support and co-sponsor this Bill. By having this support (more co-sponsors) during a time when a handful of Senators are "playing out" their personal agendas (by trying to stop this Bill from getting to the floor for a fair vote), that is crucial for Bill S311 to have the chance for vote and passage before the "lame duck" session begins following the 2008 elections.

While this goes back and forth between the anti-horse slaughter and pro-horse slaughter representatives in Congress (the latter being a significant minority), thousands more U.S. horses continue to face a very brutal transport to Mexico & Canada, only to then meet a gruesome death in a "kill box." This is not what America wants!

The "antics" by Senator Larry Craig and his small group of followers in Congress should never be allowed to happen - This is when the political process simply does not work as it should. The vast majority of Americans, as well as our members in Congress do not want horse slaughter to occur, yet it still does?

Inspiration from JOE & all those great kids
**************************************************
Tuesday, March 4th...
There sure seems to be a ton of kids saving horses lately. Maybe it has always been this way, and I was too dumb to notice. But especially since slaughter was stopped in America, the letters, pictures, and phone calls keep coming. Kids, mostly girls, taking charge. All kinds of stories. Begging their parents for money. Begging their barn managers for reduced board.

This came from Jennifer in Davis: I promised the ranch owner to wash his truck every Saturday. I also wash all the horse blankets, clean all the tack, wash water buckets, and stack bags of grain in the shed. For working 6 hours every Saturday I get free board on Dawn. She is my life Joe. The way she looked at me at the auction. I knew I had to save her. (Jennifer is 15 years old)

This came from a girl we have met several times, and her name is Alex. An arab mare from her neighborhood was going to auction in Turlock. Alex begged her mom to make the long drive. Here is the rest of her letter: I have made several friends in a chat room on Yahoo. I asked if anyone could help, and pretty soon I had $300.00. I love Sophie so much Joe, and I would stay awake at night worrying our truck would break down, or they would not let me bid cause I am too young. When Sophie was in the auction ring I was crying, and my mom did the bidding. We got Sophie for $240.00, and then a man came up to us and said it was a horse killer we were bidding against. My barn manager is a really nice person. She lets me clean stalls and help feed on weekends, so I get free board for Sophie. My heart breaks for all the other horses I saw at that auction. I hope to have lots of money when I am older, and then I can rescue lots of horses. (Alex is 14)

Here we go. We raise our morning cup of coffee to horse loving kids all over America. A standing ovation for Jennifer in Davis. Alex in Lodi. Rebecca, who lives near Chicago. Rebecca has rescued 3 horses from a killer who works at a race track called Arlington Park. Rebecca is 16. Our first (I think) ever letter from the state of Alabama. Denise rescued a thoroughbred gelding from a feed lot in Birmingham. Denise is 15. An actual male person, and his name is also Alex. He lives in Arizona, and from a race track called Turf Paradise Alex bought an injured filly who was on her way to Mexico slaughter. Alex is 16. Christine is 17, and she has rescued 2 horses from auctions in Idaho. Peyton is 17, and for a whopping $150.00 she saved the life of a starving older mare in Texas. Peyton delivers a newspaper 7 mornings a week to earn money for board. Jessie lives in Eugene, Oregon. Jessie serves customers at a fast food joint, and she also babysits. Her income is a must, as Jessie pays board on 2 older thoroughbreds she rescued from auction. Jessie is 17.

An e-mail from the mother of Julia. They live in Colorado, and Julia is 13. Here is part of the letter from mom: Julia kept saying we have to go. We have to go. I promise to keep my room clean, and I promise not to smart talk. Ever since that auction Joe I have bad dreams. All those poor horses going for $25.00 or $35.00. Julia saw a paint colt and said he is the one. His info sheet said he is not broke, and I asked Julia why do you want him? He is not broke. Julia said she just feels in her heart he is the right one. For $25.00 we became the new owners of Casper. This was in September, and Julia has not missed one day of being with Casper. We had Casper gelded. The bond between him and Julia is powerful. She can hop on his back and he carries her around, but if anyone else tries to ride Casper he bucks and acts like an unbroke horse. Casper knows Julia saved his life. He has certainly changed our daily routine. Julia has kept her promise to not smart talk me. Her room is still a mess. The best thing I ever did for my daughter was take her to that auction.

The future for horses is kids. This I know for sure. Enjoy your beautiful 70 degree Tuesday, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

Top left is a roan gelding who came to us from the race track almost 2 weeks ago. We are calling him Jazz, and he is a youngster, just 3 years old.

The remaining pictures are by request.

Top right is Andie, who came to us several years ago from an auction. Andie waits by the feeder constantly for the grain cart to come by.

Bottom left is the mare Far North Fire after a downpour. Thank you Casey for your request.

Bottom right is a filly who we bought from a horse killer. She was sold to the killer by a breeding farm because of bad conformation. We call her Dancer, and she has lived with us for over 2 years. A sweetheart who loves attention.

My statements were received with a *SMILE* for the most part...some of the 'no's were, shall I say, 'less than enchanted'....doesn't bother me one little bit....I'VE GOT THE HORSES ON MY SIDE:)

O.K., I MUST zooom outta here...EVERYONE, have a GREAT DAY....make your calls, send those stinkin faxes....let's GET 'EM:)

Alex...dang, I will MISS HIM JUST 'AWFUL'..the end of an Era, saying 'good-bye' to Mr. Favre:( His retirement will bring me nearly the same sadness as when Joe Montana hung up his helmet!

If I heard right this morning, amidst the frenzy of jumping dogs 'holding it in' and trying to get ready for work, the Governor of VA signed for more strict laws regarding dog fighting. Because of vick.

Public outrage probably had something to do with this. Tonight I will compose a letter to the Douglas County DA, for Windchill.

Can we all do a vigil again tonight? Same times, for our DC 80-100?

Margie - you heard right about VA. For once I'm proud of this state.

"Animal-fighting bill heads to governor"

A final version of the omnibus animal-fighting bill, House Bill 656, passed the state Senate and is heading to Gov. Timothy M. Kaine.

Under the bill, all forms of animal fighting would be crimes and would be Class 6 felonies with the presence of aggravating factors such as the use of performance-enhancing drugs, the use of blades, the presence of minors, the presence of gambling activity or the involvement of one or more dogs.

The governor will review the measure, but "in general he has been supportive of this kind of legislation," said spokesman Gordon Hickey.

"The passage of this bill takes Virginia from having one of the weakest animal-fighting laws to having arguably the strongest in the country," said Robin Roberson Starr, chief executive officer of the Richmond SPCA.

"After the horrible revelations of the Michael Vick case, I am deeply proud that our state has taken a forceful stand against the depravity of animal fighting."

Yes, Lynneeeee has been a whirling dervish today. But so have I. I think I've slept 5 hours since Saturday, and I have energy that I've never had before.

As for cheerleading costumes, we'll need to buy 60" wide fabrics. 45" wide fabrics won't work. :) The fabric will have to fit my office heiney.

Hi Everyone...

Very constructive day of appointments today. We got some positive feedback and more people are listening than you think!!
Keep those phones and faxes going. The one thing that was impressed upon us in ALL of our meetings today was the importance of hearing from constituents. They really DO want to hear what the people think. And they want personal messages, not just form letters.

On a personal note, it always amazes me how many people are walking the halls and trying to make a difference for the issues they believe in. People from all walks of life are there trying to make their government work for them. So many different issues and so many people really care about what happens in this country.

We'll give you a complete update on the happenings later but just wanted to stop in and say hi and thanks to you all for your help. Running late...got to run to the reception.

Will write more tomorrow, but just got done talking with Kathi Davis; of course Windchill's co-caretaker. She tells me that Windchill was the THIRD horse that starved to death in the "care" of the Javenkoskis. What Jeff and Kathy want is that all the horses at the Javenkoski place be taken from them. And that they be forbidden to ever have horses again.

The misdemeanor doesn't become a felony unless the courts can prove that the horse was tortured to death...swell.

Anyhow: more calling tomorrow. Yole should see the black eyes I have from the seepage down the face from the cut. My mother will give me SO MUCH
%$&# about this when she comes in from NC this week.....oy....I can just hear it now: ("That COULD HAVE BEEN YOUR EYE!!!!")

I wish there were specifics as to which offices did not receive any phone calls or faxes. It has me skeptical as to what may be 'going on' in the offices. If anyone knows which offices, please tell us. I have a free paid up til October cell phone to make as many calls as I want. (A gift from my ex for our work here). I am concerned about this news.

I, too, wondered about the 'no calls' thing...because I did make all those calls today and so did alotsa Famblee members...of course, my calls were all here in CA, but we are supposed to just do our own states....

Ro...I was having trouble earlier today....couldn't get there and then a few hours ago it was working fine....it's Prospero's problem, not our own computers, IMHO....CJ was having trouble today, too.

Well, it's nearly 10P in the East Wing...I'm wondering how this evenings' event went...hope they all left with full tummys and enough Mead to give them a little lightness in their steps and some real thoughts in their heads/hearts about stopping the slaughter of our American horses...

I hope Jonna's eye gets better real fassssst, so she doesn't get the "Mom Lecture"...oh gosh, I've been guilty of giving a few of those to my own kidddddds:/ It IS only because we love them and want them to be alright!

I know EVERYONE here today was a 'whirling dervish' we ALL did our jobs:) And we will do them again tomorrow, too...and the next day and the next day and the next...until FINALLY we can *CELEBRATE* that we did them and we did them WELL and we *WON*!!!!

Sleep tight, Famblee....see yole again tomorrow!

Alex...I've been watching the ESPN news and even Brian Williams made reference to *#4* tonight...I believe I am even MORE sad over Brett than I was over Montana...after all, I've 'known' Brett much longer....I'll always remember him with that big smile, those 'invisible' braces and me wishing I could bring him home and feed him PB&J 'sammiches' and COLD milk:) My heart is hurting a little tonight:( Lambeau Field just won't seem the same without him.

Robyn:
Here's the Poop on the new hole in my head:
Um, Late Saturday night I leaned across Loretta--who is a bit of a pugilist to begin with AND a AA racer till she blew her right hock out--well, she was sound asleep, and I startled her.

Now sometimes--not often--GH will come up out of a sound sleep ready for a fight... they're so totally used to being protected/contained in their crates at the track....you get the pix.

Not the first time this has happened...BUT is the first time blood was involved. Deep 3/4" cut over left eyebrow, big bruise up on hairline, so I'd say she just hit me wrong and the cut was made.
Blood everywhere...I crated her up and got to the bathroom to see how bad the damage was: Huzzah: One little cut!

SO, no insurance, and how to get to an Urgent Car driving with one hand, etc. would have to get dressed....blah blah, I got out the surgical stapler we use on the GH is they get nipped or tear on something in the yard....cleaned up the cut, still bleeding like crazy. Couldn't really see the wound and thus:

First staple was seated wrong, took it out, put the next one in PERFECTAMENTO. Now, 1 $80 tetanus shot later and a whole slew of expensive antibiotics that are trashing my stomach, and two purply eyes--soooooo attractive----I am administering the healing power of (YES) CHERRY GARCIA and watching Saving Grace and thinking of going to bed early.

OK funny.

Courage, healing to Sherry and Martita and Maribel and Renee and whom ever else needs it...Dee, my sweet rainbow-maker, we need LOTS of RAINBOWING over our nation's capitol tomorrow....I know you can do it.

Hiya FOBs - from Washington DC

This is the first chance I've had to make it to a computer. I'm going to have to make this quick but will try to get back later. The rest of the Florida group just headed out for the return trip home. I'm heading to PA later today for a family visit and will be traveling with Shelley A.

Thanks to all for your incredible support. I have to say that this trip has been everything I hoped and way more. Yesterday was amazing. I almost can't believe all the congressional visits we were able to pack into one day. We must have walked miles through the halls of congress. The reception last night was awesome and educational. Meeting and seeing all the FOBs and other Americans Against Horse Slaughter made the event even more spectacular.

My prayers for safe travel to all heading home today!

Hopefully I can post more information later.

Hay, FOB's!

I got home at 1 a.m. (today is pack and panic day before leaving for a much-needed retreat) after hydroplaning all the way up 95. This weekend I receive and open my heart.

But yesterday was intense - DC is intense. I saw so many people - each with their own cause close to their hearts walk the halls - each wanting their elected officials to listen and then act and do the right thing.

One of the highlights for me was meeting Paula Bacon. WOW!!! That's all I can say (and the woman can hug...) She has fantastic energy and I mentioned Robyn Hoffman's hard work helping Paula.

I met Paul Sorvino when Alex and I got to the Sheraton. That was another thrill. Last night at the reception, he galvanized all of us with a passionate speech about the horse and how WRONG slaughter is...anybody who was not moved had to be dead. We gave him a standing ovation. He and Amanda Sorvino came to the meeting with Senator Casey's staff as well and Amanda discussed her undercover work.

Shelley Abrams gave a beautiful talk with Senator Casey's staff - she was on point, on target. It was a joy to listen to her.

And Martita called!!! I talked to her when I had some much-needed down time before the reception. Even thru her pain, her loving heart shone through so brightly.

I got to meet some PA rescue people who are DYNAMITE!!! Gave some of them Reiki as well and showed some people the review copy of "Cassidy". Just have to set the price and it should be released next week (who can I talk to about setting up my Wiki page? Mary L?) and on Amazon/Barnes&Noble in 4-6 weeks.

So that's it for now. I don't know how often I'll be on the board between today and tomorrow morning when I leave for my beloved Berkshires.

Life is so good.

Prayers for those who walk the halls today...may they speak from the heart, may they speak for those who can't...

may we show the world what we can do....

HERE'S JOE FOR AN INSPIRATION TODAY:
Wednesday, March 5th...
Upcoming livestock auctions include Turlock, Roseville, Petaluma, and Santa Rosa. Two of our competent friends have volunteered to help take pictures of horse killers. We have received hundreds of letters on this subject. All kinds of opinions, and I very much appreciate both your concern and your confidence.

Kind of funny in a way. Advice has come from 3 different attorneys. Plus several students who hope to attend law school. They all say the same thing. Be sure the photo posted is that of a real horse killer. We could be in big trouble for showing poor old Mr. Jones who works at Dennys. I have made this mistake in the past. Watched as a horse sold cheap to someone who bids from the first row of seats. So I approach the man, assuming he is a horse killer, and ask if he would like to resell his new purchase. Only to discover the man is buying the horse for his grandkids to adore when they visit. The man really worked at Dennys. A lesson learned about judging the appearance of others.

Of course there have been auctions where well dressed normal looking young guys buy horses, and I thought how cool, the horses are going to good homes. Only to discover later those well dressed normal looking young guys were horse dealers. Horse traders. Horse killers.

Yesterday I wrote how the future of horses is kids. A phone call from a lady who rescues horses in Kentucky. The lady is 67, and she tells me I am making a huge mistake. If the future of horses is kids, why take away their innocence? Kids will become disgusted, because they figure the horse world is filled with deceit and evil. We should allow kids to enjoy the magic of horses without all the bad crap. Soon enough, as they grow older, they can pick and choose their paths.

Later today another horse comes to us from the race track. Also today an unwanted young thoroughbred gelding living in Dixon will be transported to his new home in Newcastle. A big Thank You to Ryan Andrews for providing the transportation.

Yesterday a beautiful morgan mare living in Woodland found a new home with a young girl in Elk Grove. The owner of the morgan mare said come get her, she needs to go now. The mare has been used for riding lessons, but sadly there is an illness with the owner. The young girl in Elk Grove is 11, a perfect fit. A big Thank You to Jennifer Wright for providing the transportation.

Winds are strong, and later we might be 65 degrees. Our Dish TV signal is out, and the repairman comes tomorrow. Goofy winds have been destroying our ranch for months. This weekend an hour of sleep is lost, but we very much welcome the longer days. Still searching for the first fly of 2008. Enjoy your Wednesday, and be sure to hug your horses. The coffee is Folgers Gourmet, and microwave waffles were made by Eggo. At Costco you can get 2 giant bottles of Log Cabin syrup for six dollars. We put maple syrup in syringes of pain medication for horses. The horses look forward to their drugs. Gone Cattin has been off pain meds for a month now, but everyday he still wants a squirt of syrup.

Joe

Top row: I let horses loose for the first time this year in the far north field. The ground is still soft, and I was hoping they would not make mud. Some spots though were torn up. Duh Joe.

Bottom row pictures are by request. When you request a photo from long ago, there is about a 10 day wait list. Depending on the number of up to date pictures which are shown. Three readers are wondering why adoptions from 2007 have not been posted? We did 2005, 2006, so where is 2007? Soon, very soon.

Bottom left: We rescued the old mare Elvia from a breeding farm in 2004. Elvia is by Roberto, she is now 24 years old, and her husband is Timely Weave.

Bottom right: Pony Boy is in heaven. Two stacks to choose from.

Courage, childrens. Keep on keepin' on!

jonna,
There is an auction house in Massachusetts. Crowley's. I have been told it is not a good place to go. Sad.

Lyn,
The more celebrities the better, hopefully the bigger the noise. Great job lady!

Margie....I lit a couple last night and will go back. I know the pain, that's for sure.

Good Wednesday Morning, ABR Famblee:)

I hope at some point in time, we get a 'head count' of Congressional Reps and Senators who attended last night's function in DC..hope MANY were there and left INSPIRED to HELP OUR AMERICAN HORSES!!!

Cathy Potter: You just BETCHA, I'm with YOU..I KNOW they got LOTS of calls y'day and they will get MORE today!!!

O.K., Famblee, gotta zoom....but I'll be calling and faxing from here in these Foothills of No/Ca...you can count on that!! :)

OK. Now I go to New Mexico calling/faxing. I feel like I'm tunneling through a mountain, except for Udall.

Padme, the guy that directed the film lives in my town. (Taos, NM) His name is James Kleinert. I keep him informed of all we are doing, the new site, etc. He is passionate.

RIP, Fitch

Thanks for Zara's candles. XXXOOO

A plug for Laura Gilbert aka passionsmom on the DB. I received my Americans Against Horse Slaughter bumper stickers yesterday and they are great. I'm not one to stick stuff on my car but this one is going on for sure. We all need to display these and pass em out to frens and famblee. I'm putting one up in my office too.

Margie,

I must have misspelled the group and lit a candle at "Tara" instead of "Zara." I hope I didn't write the wrong thing and insult somebdoy. LOL

Congratulations to MHR and the Rosie/Misty thread. They just hit post 50,000! Yup. 50,000 in one year. And the wonderful MaryL was the one to do it. What a great famblee-within-a-famblee they are there. Never a cross word, unconditional love for all horses. A great place to visit. And, on foal watch no less!

Congrats to the Most Happy Res
