Barbaro Updates: 524

updates are now here.

Update 3153: A Friday update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:

What a gorgeous Friday morning. Diva and Seventeen Love trained together this morning and both will be breezing tomorrow. Gator Nation and Rajahstan also galloped today in preparation for tommorrows work day. Little Bubble Gum (who is not so little anymore) and Saar Treaty will be having their first eighth of a mile breeze for us as well. Sounds like we are in for a very busy day tomorrow with horses and owners. Tim had draw-reins on Who's Happy in an effort to harness her aggressive manor. She is a very strong filly and we are trying to get ahold of her early so to speak. Tim managed to get her to stay relaxed and take it easy. Luke's hackamore (bitless bridle) has been called into action due to an abcess in the mouth of Rose Campbell. Robby (of course) was the test pilot as it is not common practice to gallop racehorses in a bitless bridle. Surprisingly she responded well. This will give her mouth a chance to mend. Powdered Donut made her way around the oval today without incident and will also be breezing tomorrow. Due to the shortage of stalls at Fair Hill Lucky has been deligated to Double Trouble Too for a short while. Tim assures me that he will be riding him on a regular basis and that his training will continue. It is good to have him back.

Update 3152: A lovely morning at Sam Houston Race Park. We had nine sets and all the horses went nicely. My first three sets were horses that have become my regular mounts. Its nice to gain real familiarity with your horses so you can then spot the nuanced differences if necessary. Four of my sets were babies, three of which went to the gate to stand. Two of those it was the first time to do this here, but they were very professional so no doubt they had done this before at the farm where they were readied to come here.

A couple of observations regarding Curlin's performance yesterday, which of course was a hot topic of conversation in our barn this morning. He was only a second of the track record, he did this under a high weight, and never got out of a gallop in his first start off a layoff going a mile and a quarter. He also cooled out very well. Of course all this while being drug free.

A bit of press ahead of next week's events. Some factual errors, but decent coverage nonetheless from my ex-employer. Comments are welcome of course: Former professor takes his love for horses to Capitol Hill.

Update 3151: The Santa Anita Handicap is the marquee race for this weekend. Here are the previews of the race:
Big Cap promises day of plenty
Deep 14-Horse Field Set in Big 'Cap
Grade 1 winners among deep cast for Big Cap

We are less than a week away from Americans Against Horse Slaughter in DC. We have 80 people who have committed to attending, so this should be an excellent two days. Actor Paul Sorvino has committed to attending. If you are thinking about joining, please do so.

Please keep calling and writing.

Hiya, FsOB! TGIF. Here's to the now "DC 80", may you rest before your journey to Washington, DC next week. I just read that our dear Poet Laureate, Martita, cannot go to DC because of a fall that caused some fractured ribs. I just lit a candle for her on the "Marti" group. RMH

Hay, FOB's!

Martita called me last night to tell me about her ribs...and Reiki is going to her 24/7...another shining light who is being called to take a short rest. For those (like me) who are feeling burned out - take care of yourselves during this relatively quiet time (energetically speaking). Spring is NOT that far away (hooray...) and that is when things will REALLY get active.

###
Prayers for Real Lace who races today...I have not forgotten you, dearest one.

###
My love and comfort to the caretakers of Bucky and Sweets. Yesterday was a hard day to take even though I know their shining spirits are at peace. Deb Anderson, I hear ya...e-mail me if you want to talk.

Alex, see you Tuesday.

From Congress.org

Arizona Representative Rick Renzi was indicted last week for extortion, wire fraud and money laundering. The federal indictment is a result of an investigation into land deals in Arizona and the suspicion that Renzi received payments in return for his influence on the Natural Resources Committee. He is accused of receiving at least $733,000 from a former business partner in return for arranging land swaps, where buyers could purchase land and exchange it for federal property.

Debbie, we are aware of the Renzi situation. We are waiting to see if he is going to step down. I have been in contact with staff there. They are also waiting.

Renzi is our friend, although he has not cosponsored yet. We could get somebody worse in there.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A top South Carolina agriculture official and two of his relatives are accused of mistreating dozens of horses here and in Georgia, where authorities described some of the animals as looking like someone "draped a hide over bones."

James Trexler, one of South Carolina's three assistant agriculture commissioners, was charged this week with five counts of ill treatment of animals. Authorities said five horses on his Hopkins property were found without food in stalls filled with manure and mud.

Trexler, who was suspended without pay from the job he's held since 2003, was released from jail Thursday on bond. His mother, Hazelene Trexler, and brother Terry Trexler remained behind bars because they are considered fugitives in Georgia. Both were charged there with 30 counts of animal cruelty, authorities said.

In October, investigators found about 70 Arabian horses, including one already dead, on about 75 acres in Jefferson County, Ga., sheriff's deputy Jimmy Kitchens said.

"They looked like you just draped a hide over bones," Kitchens said. "I used to raise and train quarter horses, and I've never seen anything like this before. If paperwork could've been done quicker, there'd be more charges."

None of the Trexlers could be reached for comment Thursday. No one answered the door at James Trexler's home. No one answered the phone at a listing for him and a message could not be left.

An attorney named by the Trexlers at the bond hearing said he was not representing them. The phones for several Sumter businesses listed under Terry Trexler's name had been disconnected.

The more than 20 horses seized Monday on property the mother and younger Trexler lease in Eastover, Ga., were so malnourished that their ribs were showing, said Lt. Chris Cowan, a Richland County, S.C., sheriff's spokesman.

None of the horses was at optimum weight and all shared a 15-gallon trough of water, officials said.

Kelly Graham, a spokeswoman for the Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said the organization did not find any food at the property or hay in the pasture. "The field was just mud. There was no grass at all," Graham said.

Hazelene Trexler, 70, is charged with 28 counts of ill treatment to animals, and Terry Trexler, 44, faces 23 counts of ill treatment to animals in South Carolina.

A tip led officials to investigate James Trexler's property on Tuesday, Graham said.

All 28 horses taken from the Trexlers, including a pregnant mare, are in veterinarian care and are expected to make full recoveries. The Humane Society plans to seek custody of them and eventually find people to adopt them, Graham said.

Terry Trexler also faces a kidnapping charge. Deputies said he refused to let a Humane Society investigator leave when she came to the pasture this month with a camera to follow up on a tip. At the time, he claimed he was his brother, James, officials said.

Terry Trexler, a former lawyer, was disbarred by the South Carolina Supreme Court in January 2001 after he was convicted of breach of trust.

As director of administration for the Agriculture Department, James Trexler oversaw budgeting and procurement, information technology, auditing, payroll and mailing services, agency spokesman Stephen Hudson said. He declined to comment on the charges.

James Trexler was hired under former Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Sharpe, who resigned in 2005 after admitting he took a $10,000 bribe to protect a cockfighting ring.

quote by KY Council on Horses official:

"It's an overbreeding issue," said Grulke. "I guess we've always overbred to some extent, but with the slaughter being available, that could be somewhat masked, because horses that didn't work out or were not wanted were sent to slaughter and you never realized how much overbreeding there was."

She should be ashamed of herself. Unbelievable.
It's on the DB if you want to read the whole miserable thing.

Posted by: jonna at February 29, 2008 2:22 PM

jonna,
Sounds like the old greyhond days. Comment like this make me sick. Can we email this jerk? If the NGA got over breeding in control...what is the problem with all the horse associations? Don't they realize that you just don't breed to breed. Good God!

####Renee, It really is hard to understand how people get into the offices they hold without really understanding the issues. GRRRRR

Batting a big goose egg with my representatives. One is running for office, one is never there and one is retiring early. AND two of the offices require 2-3 week notice of any appointment scheduling. GRRRRR.

I'm still telling the talk and leaving bugs in the shell-like ears of The Leetle Aides. Boy, are they happy it's Friday.

I SO wish I was going to the Big DC with Yole...

Sending healing thoughts out to Renee, Sherry, Maribel and Martita. And for everyone else, for that matter.

If caring and love counted, the whole capital building would be levitating by now. Know what I mean?

Safe travels to all racing on the crappy-already-been-proven-dangerous surface at Santa Anita. Prayer also for little Windchill and for Erin Brennan who had a weird day yesterday.
I offer prayer for her family as well...I don't know how they're managing. (Grace of God...)

BTW: I discovered the Curlies last night through the rescue of this poor shuttled-about male to a hopefully-final home. A forever home.

The breed is fascinating. And then I discovered brindle horses...who knew. And Champagne horses...
an embarrasement of riches, as someone once said.

JOE FOR FRIDAY....
***************************************************
Friday, February 29th... If mail and phone calls were the deciding factor, I would not post pictures of horse killers. Over 80% of readers (keep in mind, our readers are mostly young girls) tell me to leave it alone. Focus instead on the romance of thoroughbreds.

Advice has come from 3 different lawyers. If I show you horse killers I must not include their names. Cathy and I could be sued for damaging the reputation of a person. For slander. And for stopping the everybody in America has a right to earn a living process. I am told there are precedents. At first I thought Presidents, and said sure, how dumb do you think I am? But no, we are talking precedents. You are not allowed to interfere with someone trying to earn a living.

And I must tell you, money earned by horse killers would make Donald Trump jealous. A cattle trailer filled with horses sold to slaughter can bring over 15 thousand dollars. The driver does not need health certificates to leave our state. He does not need health certificates to enter Canada or Mexico. Drives me crazy.

I wrote a billion letters. Did the protest thing in front of feed lots. Hounded horse killers with my usual charm. Trying to stay legal, because I doubt prisons serve fresh strawberry cheesecake. Or praline ice cream. There are more horses from Northern California going to slaughter than ever before. Nothing I have tried has ever worked. All I have left is to show you the men and women who make money from killing horses.

I sincerely hope I do not lose you as a reader. Your mail and phone calls tell me there are people all over the world who tune in each day to my gunk. I love to share with you the magic of horses, especially thoroughbreds. To show you pictures of our horses finding new homes. A whopper of a feeling. Letters come from girls who 11 years ago adopted a horse from us, and still the horse is number one in their life. Their happiness beats anything I have ever experienced.

Soon I will be showing who NOT to give or sell your horse to. I will take pictures at upcoming auctions. Horse killer Manny Phelps has said he will gladly pose. If you advertise your horse for free or cheap, and Manny Phelps comes to your house, you can tell him to get lost. (feel free to use other phrases) You can protect your horse.

If you send your horse to a livestock auction, and you recognize from Tbfriends a horse killer bidding, you can outbid him. And then search other options for your horse.

America is slow dancing this slaughter business. Crossing both borders with large trailers carrying doomed horses is done 3 and 4 times a week from Northern California. Sometimes more. We need all horse lovers to recognize horse killers. And road block their journey. Take away their earning power. Take away their ability to exploit our horses.

An extra day in February, and we could be 72 degrees. Enjoy your beautiful Friday, and be sure to hug your horses. The coffee is Folgers Deluxe, and pastries come from Costco. There are many of you who deserve special hellos, and a giant Thank You. I am way behind on computer things, but this weekend I hope to catch up. I appreciate your patience...

Joe

Yesterday Jenny Hartman had her wisdom teeth removed, and one hour later she was helping to transport Silent Touch from our ranch to his new home in Reno. Jenny is the most giving kid we have ever met.

Top right: Talk about irony. We bought this gelding from a feed lot in Vallejo yesterday, and his sire is a stallion named Mud Route. Fitting enough...

Bottom row photos are by request.

Bottom left is Forest Gump, he was born on our ranch, and will never be known as a deep thinker. Thank you Hanna for your request.

Bottom right is our dog Johnny Angel. In 1999 Johnny Angel was tied up and tortured with acid. Burns all over his body. He came to us in 2000, had several skin operations, and now he mostly sleeps on our bed and pees on the side of the barn.

Good Morning Famblee

It's Free For All Friday so

I'M HERE AND TAKING THE DAY OFF cause next week we're really going to have to slam 'em when our WARRIORS go to DC. Besides, I'm catering a big dinner party tomorrow and have been up to my eyeballs in prep after I get home from my regular job. How does Almond Mocha Ice Cream Torte sound for dessert? Very labor intensive.

Barb...I went to Bucky's Board and now I'm a blubbering idiot....again.

I have never spoken to Joe but I respect his decision. He feels like he's tried and tried and doesn't know what else to do. If folks recognize who the killers are they may try harder to rehome their horses. At least those who truly care about them.

Good Friday Morning, ABR Famblee:)

I've made my 'follow-up' calls to the Aides in DC for the six Reps which were 'awarded' me in our efforts for next week..Left voice mails for most, spoke with two..I guess as DC goes, TWO IS GREAT...:) One asked me to please RSVP for him, which I have done...the other is unable to attend, but requested an OFFICE CONTACT...I've e-mailed our own Shelley A. regarding that...and will follow-up by talking to Stephanie Breaux as well:)

The others were all out of office, left v/mails...and so it goes....I want to re-post again, some FINE words of encouragement from our very own Sophie's Lee...this was left earlier this a.m. and became 'yesterday's posts':

Good Friday Morning Famblee,

Thursday was such a tear-filled day. As sad and heart wrenching as the day was with the news of Bucky and Sweets, there is much to rejoice about.

Now, I know someone's thinking, this guy is nuts! Thursday was the saddest day we've had in months. Well, yes, I am a little crazy, but not about this.

Think about it. Yes, FsOB saved Bucky and supported him financially and spiritually and he died. BUT! Look at the good here. YOU SAVED Bucky from a sad, lonely, painful death. YOU gave him a chance. YOU gave him love. YOU allowed him to be a happy baby and, most importantly, YOU gave him the opportunity to know unconditional LOVE.

FsOB didn't save Sweets. We didn't give her what she needed. Hell, we didn't have the chance to know her and love her. BUT (I have a lot of buts today huh? LOL), FsOB give love, prayers and other support to Joe and Cathy Shelton every day. You can bet that Joe would say we had an indirect hand in her last hours. Hours that were filled with love, food and Jag.

We are hurt and we are bent by these sad losses. We are NOT defeated. We have been given a gift. A gift that is the same as the gift of Barbaro! God loaned us Barbaro for a purpose. God also loaned us Bucky and Sweets and Jag for a purpose. That purpose is the same: to strengthen our resolve to END the suffering of our Horses, and ALL animals. God loaned these souls to give us more incentive to keep fighting the good fight; to give us more ammunition in the fight against evil.

I urge you to shed tears profusely for these lovely souls. And then tell their stories to anyone who will listen. Tell their stories to every aide and memeber of Congress. Tell the story of how these Horses were abused and neglected. Tell Congress that we're mad, we won't go away and we VOTE!

Reflect not on what we have lost (and each life lost is a tremendous loss), but reflect on what we will do in their names.

Barbaro, Sweets and Bucky. Champions in life, Champions FOREVER! Leading the Charge. Sweets, Bucky and Barbaro WILL be in the forefront in DC!

NO Horse left behind or EVER FORGOTTEN!

Thank you Sophie Lee.

How long is this country going to turn its back on what is really going on? Joe and Cathy are trying their very best....to let people be more knowledge of what is happening and where their horses are going....OR DO SOME OF THEM REALLY CARE?

Pathetic...just pathetic...
Why is not our government checking at these auctions to see if these people are legal in this country...why are they not checking the borders these horses are crossing to check and see the driver's to see if they are legal?

Why can't the auctions or someone there check out the real purpose of why they are buying the horses....JUST WHY CANNOT SOMETHING BE DONE!

Our Congress...elected by the people...US....and they are not doing their job...the Gov. of Calif and other officials...they are not doing their job....if they were...this NIGHTMARE WOULD STOP....

My heart breaks every day...on our horses going to a brutal slaughter.

MY PRAYERS ARE WITH ALL OF YOU AND THOSE GOING TO DC....LET US PRAY THAT GOD WILL HELP THEM AND US...GET THE MESSAGE ACROSS...STOP HORSE SLAUGHTER AND TRANSPORTATION ACROSS BORDERS.

thank you.

Listen to this, our brain dead governor has no idea the gas tax is so high but the woman won't lower it, she is more concerned with billboards and outside clotheslines and making people drive to the capital to shred papers...Hello gas is expensive but I guess I will drive 50 miles to shred all my personal papers.
The president said he had no idea that gas was going to $4.00 a gallon. DUUUUUUUUUUH

These people are running this country how scary is this?

Cathy,

I also respect & support Joe's decision to post photos of the KB's. I love reading all the "fun" things on his blogs,(Joe's a great writer!) but more than anything, what he posts is educational. Joe's right in wanting to get these creeps "out of the shadows," where they of course prefer to be. Education & awareness - that's what it's all about!
God bless this wonderful man, and all he does for the horses, he's truly a living saint!

Posted by: Maureen at February 29, 2008 5:01 PM

Alex - you sound like a nurse: 'familiarity so you can spot the nuanced differences'. :-) You should make a video so we can watch you and the babies some time. My niece graduated from UD in 1994. We used to visit her on week ends and catch a football game. I loved the cafeteria there.

Good afternoon, fellow Fans!

It's just after noon here in the Downeast and we're finally warming up. 9 below at my house this morning!

I sent Joe at TBFriends an email this morning and told him that all of the little girls who are telling him not to show pictures of killer buyers will thank him when they grow up for everything he has done for the horses. Because it IS all about the horses, right?

I am hoping to have some good news to share from DC next week. We are going there in the name of all of you who cannot leave the home fires. All of your voices will be heard, believe me!

Better get back to work.

Just read Windchill's update. The latest pics are showning the real change in his body and coat. Jeff has such a way with words. His description of morning coffee and soft words, and how it relaxes Windchill are something we can all relate to.

I pray for the little guy's legs - a lot. I visualize him running and kicking.

God Bless him and take care of him while giving Jeffrey all the strength he needs.

AFTERNOON POST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI

STRATEGY FOR FRIDAY FEBRUARY 29

AMERICANS AGAINST HORSE SLAUGHTER will be a historic event that can change the future of American horses. We need a huge turnout. Please consider attending. To those of you close enough to DC, even if you cannot attend the two days of lobbying, we would love for you to come to the Cocktail Reception from 7-9PM on Tuesday, March 4. For details go to DB thread Official Information for DC Event

For those of you who are unable to attend, there will be much you can do to help from home to make a huge impact to push this legislation and play your part. Senators and Representatives will be in their district offices March 15th-30th. To keep the momentum going, meetings can be scheduled, letters can be dropped off and calls can be made to their local offices. Also, we need to bombard DC with hundreds of calls and faxes during the days of March 4th and 5th. Those phones need to be ringing off the hook and fax machines busy.

We encourage you to use this week to make appointments with YOUR legislators for March 4th and 5th. Even if you cannot attend, there will be plenty of knowledgeable folks there that can attend a meeting on your behalf. Just tell them that, as a constituent, you are authorizing a member of Americans Against Horse Slaughter to meet on your behalf. Once you get a meeting set, contact Julie Caramante so she can put it on the schedule. Also, send a letter to Lucille as per the instructions on the Discussion Board addressed to the person we are meeting expressing your desire to have him/her support any legislation to end horse slaughter and the transportation of horses to slaughter. This letter will be presented at the meeting

In addition, when calling your legislators, please mention our Americans Against Horse Slaughter reception and offer to email them an invitation. Also, please call on your own Representatives and Senators and ask them to attend our event as well as to support any legislation that would ban horse slaughter and the transport of our horses to slaughter.

WE ARE BARBARO’s VOICE. Let it be heard!!

Thanks for all you do,

Shelley and Debra

Extra Friday 2/29 National Target List (HAHS)

PREFACE - crossposting from a recent ABR Daily Strategy Thread: please follow these guidelines when calling legislators on the HAHS lists as well; and with the Reps ask for the aide handling HR 503.

Please everyone, we need your help! When making your calls, ask to speak with the legislative aide who is handling S311. We are trying to get conversations going with the aides before heading to DC. Please try and collect any info on their objections to co sponsoring the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

Also, please do not post any conversations/info from the aides here. Please email myself or Shelley.

Thanks in advance. Debra,WI

and now back to my usual spiel:

FIRST THINGS FIRST - Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311 / HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/ request: Ask the Senators who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Senator Mary Landrieu, sponsor and promoter of the Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their recently-released 2008 WHITE PAPER are in the DB Thread noted near the bottom of this Post.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-459-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE NEW SUGGESTION/CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE Prior HS History above the LIST OF LEGISLATORS below.)

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Friday 2/29/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

Prior HS History: All are new to the Senate, elected to the 110th Congress - except Sen. Wicker, the [temporary] replacement for cosponsor Sen. Trent Lott; Wicker was appointed by the Gov. of Mississippi when Lott resigned. Wicker was a Member of the House when appointed - and voted AGAINST HR 503 in the 109th AND HR 249 last session. [Note - There is an upcoming special election in Mississippi to elect Sen. Lott's replacement. See Wikipedia entries on Lott & Wicker - links in the DB Thread noted below.]

IF you're done with today's ABR Strategy & State directions & the above list and STILL want to do more - you can go to ABR/DB message 15321.10 for a good alternate target list of Senators from AWI/SAPL. [That list is visible in post 4 of the Thread noted below.]

Please post at this DB thread

and/or here at ABR Comments if you have any further info about these legislators; and please post any feedback re your contacts today - EXCEPT - PLEASE FOLLOW REQUEST posted by DEBRA at a recent ABR Strategy Thread and copied at the top of this Post; email her or SHELLEY with any/all reports of conversations with aides as per those instructions.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE HORSES! GO GET EM.

Thanks, family. Thanks for being here at the house that Barbaro built. We can't go wrong.

Thankful that this is the end of February. What a horrible winter it has been for everyone. I'm heading down out of these Rocky Mountains for the weekend. Good riddance hills, hair pin turns, ice, and snow til Monday. They are beautiful, but driving up here over the past 2 months has given me a nervous tic.

Tomorrow is toenail cutting and ear cleaning day, not for me, for the dogs. I talked to them last night. They went into a heavy sulking mode.

See you later everyone. XXXXOOOO

re: Our Preseedent: Yes, I too was listening to El Jeffe's press conference. I most loved the dead air--during which tv shows insert the sound of crickets cricking away to indicate complete silence--that blasted across the US of A when Bushie paused after a reporter asked him how he felt about gas probably hitting $4 a gallon.

"DDDDDDDDDUUUUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHH?" he quipped.
I really felt like pulling over to the side of the road and hurling. Instead, I just screamed. He is, without a doubt, one of the most cloistered and protected President we have ever had...no, he does not read newspapers or news magazines.

He listens to what his possee wants him to hear. And that ain't much. I am listening to my Mom.

Kinda: I use a basic kibble and then add in stuff for individuals: like the broods, Steffie and Loretta also get grated mozzarella cheese.

Jessie's diet is put together by hand; high protein: a.m./chicken, cottage cheese, a little kibble, raw pumpkin and anything else she might request.

At night she gets Grapenuts cereal, yogurt and more pumpkin. I also give her hardboiled eggs on and off.

Oh yeah, too, the pack gets a can of chicken soup mixed into their evening meal.

Yum, Yum.

Sophie: yeah, you know I think she'll be culturally deprived by not seeing what snow is. Now, WE'RE having lake effect flurries tonight and tomorrow....yole are certainly welcome. xxoo

Feb. 29 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Big changes require many small ones. Any change seems sudden, regardless of how much we prepare for it. We wait for it, expect it, and resent its intrusion. Change is needed to stay young and vital and moving. Without it we stagnate, lose our keenness of thought, and too often fall into melancholy. Even in the best of times change takes a certain amount of adjustment. Our biggest problem with change is that we expect it to be bad rather than something that will make us happier. To a tsa su ga, a flea, a dog is the whole world, says a Cherokee. As much as we like where we are, it isn't the whole world. There are bigger things--and better. We have to be able to see beyond the dog.

I have made myself what I am.

### Jonna...this is so true. She would be deprived if she did not see the telephone pole high snowdrifts of my north Jersey childhood. We have only had snow once here this year, and no ice yet (shhh). We are on the way.

You are a good mommy...there will be a special place in heaven for you, fren.

Hey! Great news! Kathy says we can bring Sophie up for a little exposure to SNOW. No, really!

I need Cherry Garcia so badly tonight. But alas, there is no drive-thru Ben & Jerry's here. Wait: I see a whole new career path for me...I could drive right up adorned in The Big Red Blob, striped mittens and a pair of boots, and order that there confection without having to step out of my comfy stuff...just roll the window down and order as much B&J as my freezer can hold.

Damn. I feel a hot flash coming on.....

I have to go find some chocolate.....grrrrrrrr.

Jonna:) Yes, dear fren....a 40 or 10 yr old son!!! :) Born on Leap Year Day, 1968...and his sister....born on Christmas Eve, 1972...we stopped having those childrenssss, 'cause we didn't ever have 'good planning' for thier special days!! lol! And you must remember, Jonna, I am 'old'....:/ My spirit is still very young...'specially when I'm with *MISTER* and Rosie! When there, I'm only ELEVEN!!! But the bod is gettin' old....DANG!!! Getting old ain't for SISSYS!!! You gotta be TOUGH to get old:/

Alright, Famblee, if you haven't yet done so, PLEASE go read Alex' article....:) and LEAVE A COMMENT....'cause I think it to be an important thing to do:)

It is FRIDAY EVENING here in these foothills of No/Ca...I see we are receiving some clouds, which have been forecast to 'possibly' provide some 'sprinkles' during the overnight hours....today it was nearly 80 here!! And Jonna is experiencing 'lake effect flurries' tonight...as well as some famblee members in the East Wing...and Mid-West Wing...we need more WINTER here, so our lakes come up to where they SHOULD be...but it has been nice to feel a little bit of Spring these past few days:)

Everyone have a wonderful night....enjoy your peeps/furkids and have lovely dreams! See you again tomorrow....and thanks again for all the B'DAY wishes for that boy of mine, I'll copy/paste and send them along to him:) He really doesn't 'look' 40....he still gets asked for his ID sometimes when purchasing alcohol!!! It's a genetic thing from his MaMa's side of the famblee....but I do notice these days, the clerks in the market no longer ask if I'm shopping for an elder on Senior Discount Days...:( I just get the stinkin' Sr. Discount...

Well hell, scrolling up, I'm just trying to see if this child was given an actual name???? Cheesh.

See yole tomorrow. Had to wipe down all the hounds that went out for The Last Pee. Looks like we've had about 3 inches--no big deal. Sleep sweet, everyone...Courage: jonna

Heartwarming Video - Lion hugs rescuer

ABR/DB message 20441.1, General Non-Horse folder

[note - I posted a different version of this video a little while back and everybody who posted on that thread evidently enjoyed it. Now it has found its way to me again, thanks to Harriette. I am reposting because this video has sound and identifying info, as the one I posted before did not.]

passing on email from Harriette Brillianthawk:

Several years ago this woman found a sick, malnourished lion cub in the jungle.

She took the cub home and fed him and brought him up until he was too big to keep anymore.

Then she made arrangements with a zoo in Colombia to take the lion.

Here's a video of what happened when she went to visit him in the zoo for the first time:

March 1 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

We thought they would last forever--those old ones who taught us, bent us, sweetened our lives. We thought our questions would always go to them, and answers would return in familiar voices. Too many times we did not appreciate their humor, their words that chided us with lessons. Our differences were great, we thought. Our eyes wandered to other things, our voices mingled with strange ones. And suddenly, like the vapor mists that lift and fade on sun-struck mountain tops, they were gone. We did not see them go. They slipped past the boundaries to joy and rest without limit. Now the questions hang in mid air without voices to answer. And the differences fade like the mists but the memory persists with genuine humor, genuine love, and in turn, convince our young to, "Hear me now, my children...."

I have dreamed that he shall live to count many coups and be old.
