Barbaro Updates: 523

updates are now here.

Update 3150: Reports on today's easy win by Curlin:
Curlin easy winner in World Cup prep
Curlin Romps in Dubai
Curlin breezes to victory in Dubai World Cup prep

Update 3149: A very pleasant morning's work this morning at Sam Houston Race Park. We had eight sets, of which a couple went to the gate to stand. All the horses seemed to go well and the weather was gorgeous. At the break time I hung out with Paul Nolan and his wife, who is visiting for a week. We talked horses, horse slaughter and other related issues. Fun meeting and catching up. After work we went off for breakfast, then returned to the Asmussen barn to watch Curlin make his 2008 debut. It was cool to watch, Curlin won very handily without coming under any pressure. If asked to run, no doubt he could have won by a wider margin, but given this was his first start and he was carrying 132 pounds going a mile and a quarter it was impressive. Everyone seemed happy. HRTV also mentioned Golden Hare on more than one occasion during the build up. He is now back in his stall after his nice win in Oklahoma at the beginning of the week. All in all a fun morning at the track.

Update 3148: 11:15 am (east coast) Curlin begins his 2008 campaign: World's best Curlin 'ready to do himself justice' on Thursday.

We are less than a week away from Americans Against Horse Slaughter in DC. We have about 75 people who have committed to attending, so this should be an excellent two days. If you are thinking about joining, you are encouraged to do so. We will host this evening to answer any last minute questions: DC EVENT CHAT MEETING THURSDAY 7PM.

Please keep calling and writing.

Hi everyone

Good luck to Curlin this week.

On this side of the pond all the talk is about the Cheltenham festival and the clash of the Titans, Kauto Star and Denman in the Gold Cup. I see Michael Dickinson is in the Kauto Star camp.

### Robyn

Thanks for your concern. We didn't feel the earthquake in Devon or Cornwall, but as the epicentre was in Lincolnshire, Jo would have felt it in North Yorkshire. Hope she was stirred and not shaken. I haven't heard from her in ages, but I miss her here. I hope all is well with her.

Hiya, FsOB! Wishing all of the "DC 75" an excellent strategizing session tonight. May the force of Martita's lovely words from last night help anoint your efforts. Wishing each of you a productive day. Peace, RMH

#### To Liz: I miss seeing Jo's words here, too. I remember that she was so devastated by Barbaro's death. Glad that the folks in your county are safe. I didn't realize that it affected Lincolnshire (some of my long-departed ancestors hailed from there). I think I read that there'd been a bad quake in the North Sea some time ago, so perhaps Lincolnshire is close to a fault line?
To Alex: I hope that all of your family are safe in the UK, post-quake.
To Jonna: Isn't Ben & Jerry's actually zero calories when consumed under stress? Hope that migraine is gone this AM.
To Lynne B: Sorry to read your note that Bucky passed over yesterday. May he rest in peace!
To Martita: Thanks for your inspiring words! ####

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George and the rest of the stellar gang in Equine Heaven.
On their behalf:

MORNING POST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI

STRATEGY FOR THURSDAY FEBRUARY 8

AMERICANS AGAINST HORSE SLAUGHTER will be a historic event that can change the future of American horses. We need a huge turnout. Please consider attending. To those of you close enough to DC, even if you cannot attend the two days of lobbying, we would love for you to come to the Cocktail Reception from 7-9PM on Tuesday, March 4. For details go to DB thread Official Information for DC Event

For those of you who are unable to attend, there will be much you can do to help from home to make a huge impact to push this legislation and play your part. Senators and Representatives will be in their district offices March 15th-30th. To keep the momentum going, meetings can be scheduled, letters can be dropped off and calls can be made to their local offices. Also, we need to bombard DC with hundreds of calls and faxes during the days of March 4th and 5th. Those phones need to be ringing off the hook and fax machines busy.

We encourage you to use this week to make appointments with YOUR legislators for March 4th and 5th. Even if you cannot attend, there will be plenty of knowledgeable folks there that can attend a meeting on your behalf. Just tell them that, as a constituent, you are authorizing a member of Americans Against Horse Slaughter to meet on your behalf. Once you get a meeting set, contact Julie Caramante so she can put it on the schedule. Also, send a letter to Lucille as per the instructions on the Discussion Board addressed to the person we are meeting expressing your desire to have him/her support any legislation to end horse slaughter and the transportation of horses to slaughter. This letter will be presented at the meeting

In addition, when calling your legislators, please mention our Americans Against Horse Slaughter reception and offer to email them an invitation. Also, please call on your own Representatives and Senators and ask them to attend our event as well as to support any legislation that would ban horse slaughter and the transport of our horses to slaughter.

There will be a Chat on Thursday at 7PM for those of you who may have questions about the DC event. Just click on the Chat Room and log in.

WE ARE BARBARO’s VOICE. Let it be heard!!

Thanks for all you do,

Good morning everyone!

Best of luck to the people going to DC.

Jan in Florida,
I was wondering if the FOB have made a difference in the fight to end slaughter since this has been going on for many years. After reading your post from last night, it looks like we have. It is amazing that this all started in June or July of 2006 when someone wrote a message to sign a petition to end horse slaughter to the effort put forth by this group now! Yes, Barbaro chose only the best.

Go, Curlin. Have fun and be safe.

Posted by: Patty in Dallas at February 28, 2008 12:10 PM

Rest in peace, precious little BUCKY, and may light perpetual shine upon you. You were such a brave boy whose fight for survival was inspiring ~ may you run through the heavenly pastures on strong, healthy legs.

My deepest sympathy to his caregivers and to all those who were so dedicated to giving him every chance for survival!

Barbaro will take care of you, little one...

Good Thursday morning FOBs

RIP Bucky - it hurts to lose each one.

Patty - I'm only speaking for here in Florida. The word got around at horse shows where there would be petitions to sign and information given. The local Arabian club was VERY active at that time. Also the horse people would group email other horse people with contact information for our Senators and Reps. But it was nothing like what I see happening here today.

Martita - I'm joining my prayers to yours. I hope to be meeting you in DC.

Curlin - show your stuff!!

Blessings to all FOBs!

###That Ouija Board baby is a cutie pie fersher. Perky, alert, and with "one of those kisses" on his forehead. Love it.

###Nice writeup on the tranquilityfarmtbs.org Web site about Isabel's Pearl and her rather "circuitous journey" to her many-times-great-grandfather Seabiscuit's former home in Willits, northern California. Apparently there is going to be some sort of open house because the farm in Willits is being restored as a museum or retirement facility or something. (Mind like a sieve here. Nice link to an article by one of the directors of Tranquility Farm).

###My cracked rib is better--healing to the point that I do not need heavy meds. An Aleve a.m. and I'm good to go. Will try a nice trail ride (without kids and bicycles, hopefully) this weekend. Doctor said I could ride "now" as long as it was easy and not a lot of moving around.

###Weather nice here--sunny, mostly, with enough "brisk" in the air to require a light jacket. Wind expected for Sunday.

###Loved the link to the NY story about horse rescue (it mentioned Finger Lakes). Picture next to the story of a dressage horse and rider--and dressage is just one of the many disciplines retired race horses can participate and succeed in.

###Good days to all today and prayers to those racing. All safe.

Thank you JOE and CATHY:
***********************************************
Thursday, February 28th... Allison Martino tells me to try this. Lots of peanut butter, the crunchy kind. Strawberry jam. Then a layer of barbecue potato chips. Finally several slices of velveeta cheese. The best sandwich ever created. Wash it all down with cold orange soda.

So I gave it a try, and my stomach hurt for 2 days. Somewhere in the distance I saw Elvis.

AT&T says our phone lines are stronger. More powerful. Rain and wind will no longer slow us down. Back to the 5:00 a.m. routine, and our computer is faster than Seattle Slew. There are over 300 e-mails to answer, and soon I will pull an all nighter. (sure, this coming from the old man who falls asleep during Wheel Of Fortune) The coffee is from Dunkin Doughnuts, and microwave pancakes were made by Krusteaz. Later today we could be 70 degrees. We are a swamp. Mud so deep you can reach in to your shoulder. Mosquitoes with giant eyes. Toads the size of a Volkswagon.

Keeping you in the loop: Since we last spoke 2 geldings have come to us from the race track. Also 2 geldings from horse killer Manny Phelps. We purchased 2 pregnant mares from horse killers Brent Sanchez and Maggie White. One of the pregnant mares is for sure a thoroughbred, as she has a tattoo. We placed 3 Hanoverians from a fancy ranch into new homes. We placed a hungry mustang mare into a new home. We said goodbye to the filly Spring, who is now dining on green grass at a foster home in Clear Lake. And we once again said goodbye to Luke, as he returned to his foster family in Orangevale. 4 years in a row we have said goodbye to Luke, and every autumn he comes home when the rains begin.

On Saturday horse killer Manny Phelps phones to say I better take a filly. She is tiny, and starving. For just $250.00 the filly could be mine.

I want to tell you about Jag. A former lesson horse, Jag came to us last year when he was no longer wanted. Jag is a thoroughbred, and he worries. All the time I hear how stupid thoroughbreds are. Inbred, with little common sense. But you should meet Jag. Smarter than any horse I have been with. The world he carries on his shoulders.

And in monster winds with sideways rain comes this tiny starving filly from horse killer Manny Phelps. Her gums are white, and she is dying. Because of over crowding Jag is free to roam in our mare motel area. He greets the tiny starving filly, and not once does he leave her side. Once again, the world on his shoulders.

We named her Sweets, because even in death there must be recognition. We put Sweets in the isle of our mare motel, and she would nibble on an assortment of grains. Jag would talk to Sweets, and encourage her will to live. Sweets would nicker to Jag, a quiet little cry, and in those eyes you could see her content. Sweets lived for another 22 hours. And when she was gone Jag stood over her body and grieved.

There are readers who hate when I show starving horses. Or write about killers, or write about death. But this is our life. Our ranch. Every day we must deal with hungry horses. With young foals who are sold to slaughter. With pregnant mares who are priced by the pound.

Top row shows Sweets with her best friend Jag. Before she died she knew love.

Bottom left is Eclipse, and she came to us from a feed lot. In just one week Eclipse has gained 40 pounds.

Bottom right is Jade Beret, and he comes to us from the race track with a bowed tendon. We will call him Jade, and he is a sweetheart.

108 horses are watching the house, waiting for breakfast to be served. Almost another month gone. An extra day in February tomorrow. Enjoy your Thursday, and be sure to hug your horses. Anything is possible. I know this for sure..

Posted by: jonna at February 28, 2008 3:12 PM

FOBs: PLEASE go and look at little Sweets and her protector, Jag on Joe's website. How do they know.
How did he know to stay with her and talk to her during her last 22 hours on earth? Do they all do that: stand over a fallen comrade? I know elephants will do this...but I guess horses do too. God bless Joe for paying for a sweet, quiet end for this little fragile filly. She died surrounded by free horses and humans who asked nothing of her. And of course, her new best friend, Jag. The pictures should be sent around the world.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at February 28, 2008 3:37 PM

### Jonna, I can't look. I am devastated just reading this stuff. Yes. I believe that animals will 'stand by'. Every summer I listen to the cows crying for days after the calves are taken away. I also saw a cow standing beside her sister, who was struck by lightening, and she was making low, groaning noises, staring at the fallen one, and her eyes were drenched. These situations are not anomalies. Whether some would like to admit it or not.

Continued prayers for Windchill and his caregivers. And I surely hope whoever is criticizing them stops it.

Ruth Stacey-You can pay general admission on the day of the race and that will grant you access to the track. It does not give you a seat. You can stand or sit on the bricks. If you are willing to experience the infield. You can take lawn chairs in the infield.

Or you can go to the various ticket broker sites and purchase tickets. stubhub.com or e-bay
You will pay a premium for these tickets. You can't purchase tickets from Churchill Downs as they are sold out. So, you will have to go the "alternative" market route.

Of course, someone on this site might have access to tickets and sell you those :)

Good Thursday Morning, ABR Famblee....

Barb,AZ...yes, that would be 'the' Bucky:( I have been to his website this morning, there is no new update there....I checked the p'work they sent me as a 'thank you' for my piddly donation for him, there's no phone number anywhere....I have 'feelers' out in form of e-mails to peeples, but will be away most of this day, certainly until around 8P East Wing time:/

I guess the bone infection was just too much for his little self:( He was growing so BIG and eating and being such a 'happy boy', I just didn't expect him to cross the Bridge!!

I PRAY the prognosis for Wind Chill will be MUCH better, Famblee.....sooooo sad to lose these 'younguns' when their whole little lives lay before them:(

I'M HERE AND I'M CALLING

So sad about little Bucky who fought so valiantly. I guess I will reserve total sadness until we know for sure it was him.

So many things happening and so little time. I'll list them in a nutshell:

Sign the petition

Buy tickets to the MHR Hay Drive. Those Breyer models of Ruffian & Rags are a wonderful prize.

Buy some Americans Against Horse Slaughter bumper stickers. Passionsmom is out of pocket on these. They have our logo and list a new website to be launched.

Blitz, invite to the reception and make appointments.

Am I missing anything???? Whoa, my mind is totally whacked this morning. 82 here in the Palm Springs area.....way to warm for this time of year. That's it, my brain is fried.

This comment bothers me... they sent me as a 'thank you' for my piddly donation for him.

Lynne, any donation is huge due to it coming from the heart. Don't ever feel that your donation no matter how small it is is not good enough. It is more than enough it all adds up.
My sister in Barbaro you are a very special ladeee. I just felt you needed a spanking. lol

Racehorse steroid use discussed

NTRA, OTHER GROUPS HAVE PROPOSED A BAN

By Halimah Abdullah
MCCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS

WASHINGTON --The practice of injecting racehorses with steroids during the weeks before high-stakes competitions met tough scrutiny at a congressional hearing Wednesday.

Critics say the animals are exploited through the harmful use of anabolic steroids to boost stamina and power and to mask fatigue. Some people illegally abuse the drugs for the same purposes, but the practice is legal in horse racing, and steroids often are used for medicinal purposes when a horse is ill or injured.

The Lexington-based National Thoroughbred Racing Association and other groups have proposed a ban on steroid use in the month before a race to give horses time to get the drugs out of their systems.

If it's adopted nationally, the rule would take effect by December and would be in place for the 2009 Kentucky Derby -- a move that supporters such as Kentucky Rep. Ed Whitfield, the ranking Republican on the House of Representatives subcommittee that held Wednesday's hearing, said will help ensure better sportsmanship in horse racing.

"It's no longer 'My horse is better than yours'; it's 'My vet is better than yours,'" Whitfield said.

Whitfield questioned the industry's delay in adopting more stringent and uniform drug rules. States set their own horse racing regulations -- including drug testing policies -- and Arkansas, California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, New York and Pennsylvania are among those that have adopted the new guidelines. Kentucky, Maryland and Texas are among the states expected to support the model rule.

Opponents of a blanket ban point out that, unlike the use of performance-enhancing drugs in people, there's no proof that such chemicals enable horses to run faster. Steroids often are used to help the animals recover from abdominal and respiratory illnesses.

Whitfield told the House panel that the horse racing industry must stop lagging behind other professional sports when it comes to drug testing.

It is "time to call in the federal cavalry and send it chasing into your stables with guns blazing to clean up this sport," Whitfield said.

The industry's failure to reform the practice reflects the sport's unwillingness to look at "the unpleasant part of this business," he said.

The nation's horse racing regulatory bodies are working to address these issues, Alexander Waldrop, the president of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, told the House panel.

"In 2007, nearly 107,000 U.S. horses made 918,000 starts in 116,000 races," Waldrop said. "Our industry tested at least one horse from every one of those races. We screen for up to 200 drugs in one sample."

Waldrop said the horse racing industry spends $30 million to $35 million annually on equine drug testing and almost $1.4 million on research and development into new tests and testing procedures.

Dr. Rick Arthur, the equine medical director for the California Horse Racing Board, said steroids are the exception in the testing.

"The sport has some of the most rigorous drug testing of any sport, with one exception -- anabolic steroids -- which have largely been ignored," Arthur said.

Rep. Joe Pitts, R-Pa., asked Waldrop why some states had been delayed in adopting the regulations. Waldrop said that although a urine test exists, there is scientific disagreement about a plasma or blood test, which he says should be available this summer.

"We're seeing compliance and support we've never seen before," Waldrop said. "I've yet to hear a horseman say we do not want to stop the use of steroids. What they say is we want to test plasma."

Memories are simply patterns stamped on our minds. Don't let them make you believe you have done everything wrong. Make new choices, find new thoughts that feed your spirit. Speak courage. Intentionally cut sorrow and regret from your thought, Get rid of tears and, if you have to, force yourself to begin smiling. It is not ridiculous to set new standards. It is common sense to turn your life around when it doesn't work the way it is. Forget what others say and believe in the Good Father. It is their privilege to make decisions about their own lives, but it is up to you to make your own. We are saying the same thing, we just say it in a different way. Find your own path and fill it with flowers. See something beautiful everywhere you look. Rejoice in life itself and find your own new and happier road.

There is one God looking down on us all. We are all children of one God. God is listening to me. The sun, the darkness, the winds, are all listening to what we now say.

Lynne's post reminded me of it, and compelled me to copy it hear. As Renee said, no act of kindness and no gift is "piddly". My heart breaks for little Bucky too, but Lynne, your gift helped to sustain him and allowed him the days he had to be loved. And he was so loved. Barb, stretching my hand to you across the few miles between you and here. We'll all comfort each other for the loss of this little one, and rejoice in the love that he had in the short time he was here. Prayers and love to all who cared about his precious little guy, and for all the little ones.

Meanwhile, Wind Chill hangs in. If love will heal him, there is no doubt that he's going to be here for a very long time.

####Kay, am happy you are getting better. cracked ribs hurt BIG time.

####Ruth Stacy so good to see you here

Ouiji Board's baby is about as adorable as they come.

Anyone who needs a bit more inspiration, read Martita's post of last night. Shoot thought I copied that too. Be right back

Remember Larry Liddell, a Barbaro-loving journalist who wrote about his feelings for Barbaro (both before and after 1/29/07) - and after I emailed him to thank him and gave him some more info and hooked him up with Stephanie at MHR, he wrote a lovely antislaughter piece featuring MHR and mentioning me and Blackie? (I'm pretty sure his Barbaro pieces and his MHR piece were linked up top at the time of publication.) Got this from him the other day; now he is wearing a "Riding With Barbaro" bracelet!

Hi.

Thanks for the President of my Rotary Club, I am now wearing a blue rubber band on my left wrist that reads: "Riding With Barbaro." She bought it for me at Churchill Downs while visiting there last week! How about that?

I wear it proudly!

Hope all is well with you.

Later.

Larry

In an earlier email he had mentioned he is gonna be in DC beginning after noon on March the 3rd, so of course I emailed him links to the Invitation to the Reception and the AAHS Press Release. He will try to make it. You who are going there, watch for him - there will be nametags, right? and give him a big FOB group hug.

Windchill update

Windchill, story of a survivor
..."Maybe somewhere deep in each being's heart and soul is a belief that it can be loved and that's what Windchill holds on to..."

February 25th, 7:56am: Whoa...morning comes seconds after we close our eyes it seems. Wow. My last check of the AM is done, next shift comes in in about a half hour. He was laying down, Kathi had covered him back up with blankets (at last check last night he was still up, standing with his favorite blanket). He nickered a "good morning", that's always so cute in the quietness of the barn in the early morning. He took a good drink of water and now he's set for a day of resting. He'll be rolled over late morning or early afternoon. I told him he'd have a pretty peaceful day, not as busy as yesterday was.

February 25th, 1:12am: Yes Lori Dalbec, I know I should get some rest, I will, I will...I just had to share an email from Deb Sprague. She's been getting a bunch of requests for other pictures of Windchill and she's created a beautiful purse - look at her work by clicking here.

February 24th, 11:58pm: No I haven't forgotten folks...just been a busy, busy day. Wow, where to even begin. After Windchill's 30+ hour stand, he wanted up this morning but could only stand for 20 minutes and then laid back down. A day's worth of well-wishers gave him the 'oomph' he needed for his lift this evening and around 6pm or so he was back on his feet again. His newest guardian angel during the day is a new mare on this farm named Bonnie. She was adorable, watching him closely, lowering her head over the stall and nickering to him. And after one full day on this farm she's been sold to proud new 'parents' Aaron & Kris, both of whom spent a good deal of time helping care for Windchill as well. Congratulations guys. Today was a day of goodwill and generosity. We have new friends from Bruno, MN (thanks again Maricle family!) And lots of new friends from Duluth and the surrounding area. I didn't know my driveway could hold this many cars without collapsing or something. Todd brought us all a huge dinner which was wonderful! And I think we have enough strawberry yogurt for the moment, if Windchill gets to it all he'll probably have a weight problem. Somehow I don't think any of us would complain.

You know the one thing that will be hard for you to see if I ever do get that webcam going out there - a good one hopefully - is Windchill's eyes. Windchill's eyes are what capture people's hearts. They shine with that quiet determination. They hold wonder, sadness, intelligence and love. I'm not making that up because I'm one of those insane 'horse people' - non-horse people have been out to visit in droves and they see him, they kneel by him and he touches them with his innocence and fierce desire to see all this through. It's not an in your face sort of thing - it's more powerful than that. It's this quiet determination he has to keep breathing. Today it was 40 degrees here. Two weeks ago it was 60 degrees colder. He was just as determined in the cold as he is now healing in this mild temperature reprieve. Amazing. We're keeping warmer leg wraps on him now after our vet said his legs were colder than last time. Hopefully between that and being on his legs more the circulation is increasing in his legs. One more week til we're in the clear on potential frostbite damage, so far no symptoms. He still doesn't like his medicine, that's downright cute. Internal organs are functioning normally. All this is good.

Windchill did very well today, soaking up the love and affection. Another animal healer and communicator stopped to visit. One told us about Windchill's joints (sore but improving and nowhere near the pain he was in not too far back). Both said he was in better spirits. And one echoed what another had said - Windchill is sad. He's not sad about where he is now - quite the opposite in fact. He's profoundly saddened about his past life - that now that he knows there's this other life he doesn't understand why he went through what he did. You know what Windchill - neither do we.

Still waiting for today's (Thursday 2/28) extra HAHS national target list to pop up on their group site. Soon as "da list" is available, it will be posted at that Thread, visible in post 3.

MEANWHILE - if you're done with today's ABR Strategy and instructions from your State leader, you can go to that DB thread for a good alternate target list of Senators from AWI/SAPL (scroll down to post 4).

Way to go, Curlin! (Alex has been 'touting' him since I can remember first hearing about him . . . a good eye for a good horse, eh wot!?)

Sad about Bucky; rooting for Wind Chill. And the Circle of Life goes on and on and on . . . .

We keep being reminded how precious and fleeting Life is. We [the people reading here] see this perhaps more than the multitudes do, just because of what we have chosen to do.....and what it exposes us to.

All you Ben & Jerry's lovers - FOB Daphne alerted me over a year ago that they use battery-raised eggs; I researched and found that although they are "trying to quit" - gradually converting to cage-free - the changeover will take almost TEN YEARS - and I refuse to spend my money to torture animals, even chickens, so I reluctantly and with great regret quit B & J cold turkey. (I buy Phil's Eggs at my local grocery when I can't get to the old barn where I can see the chickens running around and being chickens; it's around the corner from the stables where my niece Shona (my ride) lives.

Re-post section of Joe's journal today on Sweets and Jag.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
"I want to tell you about Jag.

And when she was gone Jag stood over her body and grieved."

Well, I just looked at the pictures at TBFriends and tears are flowing. I have seen emaciated horses. I've been up close and personal with a couple who arrived at MHR in that state and are now doing great. Why do people do this? WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?????
Jag is my hero. He knew and he comforted that little girl to the end. Horses are smart and they know what's going on.
I'm sorry but folks who are trying to pawn off horses saying they can't afford to feed them anymore make me sick. I can't afford it either but I'm finding my way and Cloud wants for nothing. I've given up a few things that just aren't as important to me anymore. No horse, no animal deserves to be starved. We are their stewards for cripes sake!!!!!

Posted by: Kathy in SC at February 28, 2008 7:42 PM

Yeah Curlin...did we doubt? nope not for a second.

Since my last post and coming back I read Joe's blog. Am so sorry to know of Sweet's passing.

How could anyone not believe the intelligence of the horse, thoroughbred or otherbred? or that each has a soul that is right there behind those amazing eyes. Reminds me of a time long ago when my friends and I were walking back home one beautiful summer day spent at the stable where my horses were housed. We saw a horse by a fence and heard him crying to us before we realized he was standing beside his friend, who had evidently just laid down and died. He was still warm, and his friend was so sad and distressed. Two of my friends went through the posts to run across the field to the house, while one other friend and I stayed with the grieving boy. He was inconsolable. We hugged him and cried with him. It was kind of sweetly funny in a way, as he would stop vocalizing and sniff us as we held him and smelled the scent of our horses, sort of puzzled, no doubt, maybe even somewhat comforted, but he would begin to cry again, as though he were truly brokenhearted. His family finally came, led by my friends, all of them equally brokenhearted having lost their older boy. He was very old, forget exactly how old, but he was happy and healthy and loved. I passed by there many times afterward, and the surviving horse was almost always in the same spot, or close to it, always seeming to be looking for someone or something. Then one day he wasn't there, and I never saw him again. Never stopped in to ask about him, just didn't want to know the inevitable. Would much prefer to think he and his older friend are in hevvin, maybe giving gentle nudges to the little ones like Fitch and Mercedes and Bucky, all the little foals who need big frens, and Sweets who will surely be missing Jag.

Joe, sometimes I don't know how you endure. You are truly a special angel.

I agree 100+ percent....what is wrong with folks...my heart is broken...to see how cruel some people are to do that to a horse or animal...

I wish we had lots of land somewhere....where we could help horses, animals....where we could grow hay, grains, watermelons...and carrots...sorry do not know how to grow peppermints...lol....

I know I said this before....BUT HOW DO I WISH....

Little Bucky, Precious Sweets...you are in heaven with God, Barbaro, and wonderful heavenly frens...no more pain...no more pain.

Please forgive me because I'm going to vent a bit. I'm sick of the "unwanted horse theory" and the "theory of unintended consequences". I'm sick of pro teaching us a lesson by abandoning and starving their horses. And yes, I believe that is just what is happening. These are sentient beings who are brought into this world by humans who are not taking responsibility.
I'm sick of aides who won't take my call so I'm forced to leave a message. Have any of them looked a horse in the eye yet they have the power to legislate life or death. Have they seen how humane slaughter is by going to a plant or watching a video. I think not. I recently ready something that 700,000 horses are humanely put down annually or something like that. Evidently some folks get it so why isn't the majority winning this thing??? GREED!!! EVIL, EVIL GREED.

Thanks for listening

There IS NO EXCUSE for what people do to these animals. I am very angry, like everyone else.

I recently posted about the 2 starving horses my community helped to rescue. The shelter had to BUY these horses from the owner. I just assumed, as did everyone else, that the owner was having financial woes. Overnight, funds were raised, horses were saved, vet care and grooming started, and enough feed to last them until May. The shelter lady has an article in the paper every week. The public never knew the identity of the 'owner' of these horses. Last week, regarding the rescued horses, the shelter lady stated, "You wouldn't believe me if I told you who the owner was. It was not a case of money. It was a case of neglect". It sounds like that b!#;h was capable of getting those horses what they needed. But just didn't. And who could sit buy and watch a community scrape together money to buy the horses that you WOULDN'T take care of?!?!?! These people are devils. May they burn in hell. God forgives me. I know he does.

On Sunday, a neighbor lady lost her horse. He passed at home, peacefully. A backhoe was located 17 miles away. The man came. He only charged $35 total.

I am not sure I will ever believe the sob story excuses that people spew as to why they can't take care of their horses. I trust no one anymore.

I think I figured out the name of the owner of those horses that were starving and rotting in a barren field. There are some famous people here. You all would recognize her name. If I ever see her pass buy in a parade or something, she's either getting b!#;h slapped or spit on.

I need a drink now.

Cheryl Jones, that is the sweetest story. There are so many tear jerking posts today.

I wish that our world was one where no amimals had to endure the suffering that we have seen. It is so heartbreaking...

RIP Bucky, and Sweets and any others that pass today...

Extra Thursday 2/28 National Target List (HAHS)

PREFACE - crossposting from a recent ABR Daily Strategy Thread: please follow these guidelines when calling legislators on the HAHS lists as well; and with the Reps ask for the aide handling HR 503.

Please everyone, we need your help! When making your calls, ask to speak with the legislative aide who is handling S311. We are trying to get conversations going with the aides before heading to DC. Please try and collect any info on their objections to co sponsoring the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

Also, please do not post any conversations/info from the aides here. Please email myself or Shelley.

Thanks in advance. Debra,WI www.campaigningforbarbaro.com

and now back to my usual spiel:

FIRST THINGS FIRST - Stress the importance of cosponsorship & getting S 311 / HR 503 to a vote.

Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Senators who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Senator Mary Landrieu, sponsor and promoter of the Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to VEW's two 2007 antislaughter releases and their recently-released 2008 WHITE PAPER are at the DB Thread noted near the bottom of this Post.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-459-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE NEW SUGGESTION/CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE Prior HS History above the LIST OF LEGISLATORS below.)

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Thursday 2/28/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 (Senators) & HR 503 (Representatives); ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

Thursday 2/28 Extra HAHS List

Prior HS History: All the Reps. on this list voted for HR 503 in the 109th Congress, but only Rep. Bobby Rush (IL) cosponsored that Bill (noted below). Their voting records on HR 249 last session (Y = Yes; N = No; NV = Not Voting) are noted below.

In addition to using the ABR Strategy spiel posted above - (IMO) -

THANK those Reps who voted YES on HR 249 earlier this Congress; remind them that this protects ONLY wild equines, and we still need HR 503 for the rest of them and to end export.

Hay, FOB's!

Am surfacing for a little bit...

I have just received an invitation to a Laminitis Lecture and a buffet dinner with Dean Joan Hendricks at New Bolton on 3/25.

###
Have been reading about Bucky and Sweets. I read all the frustration and anger felt by so many on the board.

###
Unfortunately for me, I'm burned out. Am taking care of myself right now before coming back to the board. And its one week till I can put the world aside for a short time and reconnect with the chant practice and the creativity, spirituality, and brutal honesty of a very wise man. And I pray he understands what happened to me.

###
Then I come back to the horses.

###
Got the final review copies of 'Cassidy' this afternoon. Will look at them one final time, fax in the approval form and I'm good to go...Good Lord.

What's wrong with people: i just think we have come too far from our animal souls: That a person would willingly NOT NOTICE a starving, whinnying horse in a field. I don't get it either. The horses have more "humanity" than many of the "people" we hear from, hear about, are made aware of. What about the buddy who tried to pull him equine partner out of the pond by it's ear?
What about Jag? Joe has other horses who have stood watch over horses Joe and Cathy have brought home to die. Elephants mourn--even try to bury their dead.

####
YOLE
There is so much frustration. This morning, Jeff Tucker said that Windchill tried to stand up when he came in to feed the beasts and see to WC's needs. He has the most powerful will to live. God, please see to that little guy's leg muscles...we just cannot lose him too.
The thing that Joe said about giving Sweets a name despite what they knew was coming:
"We named her Sweets because even in death, there must be recognition."

Cheryl J, Kathy SC, Joan Roya, Lynne, Renee (GH LADY) Cathy P, BarbAZ...we need to just keep going. For all those nameless ones that get left in the feedlots, go up the chute to their terrible ends.
Or starve/freeze to death in a field within SIGHT of supposed "human" beings.

It has to end. We start with HS and we just go on from there. There have to be penalties or fines (for some people, parting with their money is terrible punishment, so there ya go.)

Have to feed all my "unwanted" hounds now...love youse guys...we have so much to do.

UPDATE FROM THIS MORNING

February 28th, 8:23am: Windchill was up standing and walking around most of the night - munching away and drinking most of his water. He sure loves the alfalfa! He's in a really sweet mood this morning and trying to get up. You can certainly feel the difference in his neck, where he's developing muscles and beginning to fill out. He's also gotten heavier to lift and is standing taller so we'll probably have to raise the winch up a bit.

We've gotten quite a few emails regarding visiting the little guy. Only weekday visitors need to be pre-scheduled by us - this coming Saturday is open to everyone all day - no reservations needed. Sunday the barn will be closed to visitors.

If you do come visit we ask that you please remember the barn is very similar to a hospital room or a nursery - indoor voices only, please do not bring your pets, if you do bring children please explain to them the need to walk and talk calmly in the barn area and that Windchill can only be fed the hay in the stall and limited other items we will have on hand. With 19 other horses to visit while you're here, there's plenty of opportunities to pet and feed lots of horses, a dog and cats. [end of update]

Per later posts on that Thread - A group of MN FOB's are visiting Sunday via special invitation, bringing goodies for WC and his caregivers - and they plan to take lots of pics to share, and Mary L of course will have a new video up her sleeve . . .

###Jonna, If I was only so "unwanted" as your hounds (LOL). (I still have the picture of your beloved Blackie that I look at from time to time. I hope time is healing the ache in your heart from his loss.

I do believe Windchill will make it, he just has to, he is trying so very hard, my heart breaks just thinking about him all by himself in that field,so forlorn, freezing and wondering what the %#@$life is about, well I won't go there now. He will make it!!!!

Good night all, keep warm and safe.

Curlin, you rock!

Barbaro, watch over Sweets and Bucky, show them that there is a better place and whisper to them not all of us humans are so bad. Love and miss you always.

Animals have the most tender hearts and know so much more about humans than we know about them. Of course they grieve and feel and are very sensitive and aware. I've heard before from my brother-in-law how a cow made huge gulping, crying sounds when her calf was taken away. Shirl
*********

### Jonna, I can't look. I am devastated just reading this stuff. Yes. I believe that animals will 'stand by'. Every summer I listen to the cows crying for days after the calves are taken away. I also saw a cow standing beside her sister, who was struck by lightening, and she was making low, groaning noises, staring at the fallen one, and her eyes were drenched. These situations are not anomalies. Whether some would like to admit it or not.

Continued prayers for Windchill and his caregivers. And I surely hope whoever is criticizing them stops it.

Feb. 28 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Memories are simply patterns stamped on our minds. Don't let them make you believe you have done everything wrong. Make new choices, find new thoughts that feed your spirit. Speak courage. Intentionally cut sorrow and regret from your thought. Get rid of tears and, if you have to, force yourself to begin smiling.

Hiya, FsOB! I share everyone's sense of righteous indignation and frustration about Sweets, Windchill, and Bucky. How could some humans be callously indifferent or overtly cruel? The only way I can keep my spirits buoyed is to know that people like Joe Shelton at TB Friends, Stephanie at MHR, and all of you are on the planet, continuing to fight the good fight. The others want us to get discouraged & to give up and we can't let them win. Here's to all of us, the warriors for peace and justice! RMH

STRATEGY FOR FRIDAY FEBRUARY 29

WE ARE BARBARO’s VOICE. Let it be heard!!

Thanks for all you do,

Good Night, dearest Gang. We experienced the results of more human ugliness today. It's been hard. But tomorrow will be better. And we have great rewards to look forward to.

As Jeff Tucker stated, "Once you have seen an animal suffering and neglected, you can't go back to who you once were". God Bless him. And the Heavenly Herd will watch over Windchill.

Sleep in peace everyone.

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever. . . run with the angels honey! Love you so much and forever.

And all love to the Heavenly Herd . . . you take me to where angels walk.

Holding paws, hooves, hands, feets with all the Barbaro Nation, peace and love to all this night.

always with love,

Before I can lay my head down on my pillow this evening, I had to start a candle group for "Sweets."

PLEASE stop in before you go to bed. Let's do this one thing for her that we CAN do. We can help her find her way.

Thanks.

Thank you to everyone that has posted such sweet messages about Bucky. His family will miss him greatly. We did everything we could to save his sweet life. God just needed him in Heaven. His website is now updated.
Rest in Peace Bucky and Sweets.
Barbaro...please take good care of these two.

Please follow the below link to a memorial page for Bucky. Very beautiful. Bucky will be cremated and his ashes returned to his caretakers. If you find it in your heart to donate for this one last tribute for our boy...that would be wonderful.
We love you Bucky.

Arm yourselves with full boxes of kleenex before viewing Bucky's beautiful memorial page!

As someone used to say quite frequently on this board (I think it was Lyn Gilbert)....

SHINE ON, YOU CRAZY DIAMOND!

Love to Bucky forever...

Hi all,
I have been following the story of the little 9 month old colt that was rescued on Feb. 9th after having been left out in the freezing temperature to freeze and starve to death, in the Duluth, Mn area. I check this website "Raindance Farms" a couple times a day checking on the little guy. He had a very poor prognosis. However, as was with Barbaro, the little guy named Windchill has a very strong will to live. I hope that anyone who is able can contribute to the feed or medical bills of this precious little guy. The pictures will bring tears to your eyes.

I spoke to Martita tonight and even though she is in pain, she was just so concerned about not being able to be with us in DC!! I told her that she would certainly be there with us in spirit.

Wishing her well and sending prayers for a speedy recovery. She's a special lady who we all hold dear.

Sad day hearing about poor Sweets and Bucky, the abuse is just sickening. They will not be forgotten for their bravery.

Glad to hear Windchill is hanging in there, praying for his recovery.

Watched Curlin on HRTV today, he was not even asked, seemed to be enjoying the sights, maybe a little too much. I can't believe it was a year ago I saw him as he
