Barbaro Updates: 498

updates are now here.

Update 3037: My interview yesterday on "at the races" with Steve Byk is archived here. It also includes Julie from Churchill Downs discussing the Jackson's decision to memorialize Barbaro at Churchill.

Update 3036: Curlin and Pyro work together again this morning, six furlongs in an impressive 1:13: Curlin, Pyro Impressive in Workouts.

Update 3035: A chilly start to the day, but bright sunshine once the sun came up. We had ten sets, so a busy morning. This included a few 2yos, our first to ship in. My understanding is we will get many 2yos to help get ready over the course of the next month or two. Anyway, all my horses went nicely and it was a pleasant morning's work. There was an announcement over the backside PA system, about 7 am, asking if anyone had found a horse, please contact the stable gate. An hour later the same announcement was broadcast. Lets hope the horse was discovered! I also witnessed a "turn and burn", for the first time. This is quarter horse training ... apparently they jog the horse back to the eighth pole, turn around and then go as fast as they can. It was odd to witness.

Update 3034: Ed Fountaine writes about drugs in horseracing: 'ROID TO TROUBLE HALL OF FAMER VAN BERG: DRUGS RUINING RACING.

Determining the size of a stallion's book can be complicated and it is tempting to push for a large book for a popular stallion. Winstar is looking to control this a little: WinStar's Way: Controlling Books, excerpt:

"This year, our goal for Distorted Humor will be between 95 and 100 mares," Cauthen said. "We're slowly reducing his book for a couple of reasons. One, we're hoping to extend his career so he'll be here when he's 25 or 30 instead of for a shorter period. Two, we feel like that as the price of stud fee goes up, his exclusivity should go up so there's not as many of his foals out there. That's an advantage to everyone commercially or anyone who breeds or races. If you had one of the five grade I winners he had last year, that's a positive; it was a little exclusivity. A long career and not too many foals out there both are probably good things."

Please keep calling and writing, and consider coming to DC March 4 and 5.

Hiya, FsOB! Wow, There were 851 entries posted here yesterday. What a testimony to a champion whose life spurred so many of us to action in ways that we could have never foreseen on 05/06/2006. Here's to a productive day for us all. Peace, RMH

Morning skritches to the clearly legendary BBH, Sir J.H., Gorgeous George and the rest of the amazing gang in Equine Heaven.
Speaking of amazing gang, nice work on South Dakota both up above and down below...

MORNING POST SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI

STRATEGY FOR WEDNESDAY JANUARY 30

We have much to celebrate. The life of our beloved champion, Barbaro and the defeat of the bill in South Dakota have renewed us and energized us once again. Make no mistake…..YOU are responsible for the victory in South Dakota.

It has once again proven that all Americans can make a difference. Not just the money people or lobbyists but the caring compassionate people sitting with their computers, fax machines and telephones.

It also proves the power of a house united. Many people that haven’t been around in a while have returned and joined in this mission. We need you to stay! There were times that many have gotten disheartened and thought “why bother, we’re not making a difference”. Today tells you differently!! By sheer numbers and determination we have defeated horse slaughter in an agricultural state like South Dakota. That is no simple task and not one to take lightly.

However, there will always be another South Dakota and other horse slaughter plants trying to rear their ugly heads in this country again. We MUST get the federal legislation passed to make sure that never happens. And to protect our horses from the inhumane transportation to a brutal death in other countries.

Please use today to contact your own Senators and Representatives and let them know how important it is to move quickly on this legislation. Let our co-sponsors know that we appreciate their support but we need more…..we need action.
Let those still sitting on the fence know how close we came to once again knowing the horrors of horse slaughter on American soil. Let them know that the Senator in South Dakota said “We can now corner the market on horse slaughter”. Let them know the core values of the American public will not tolerate that attitude toward these majestic animals who are icons of our country.

So, while we celebrate, let us not become complacent but rather more determined than ever to get this done once and for all! And when those who do not believe say that we can’t make a difference, stand tall and say loudly YES WE CAN!!!

We made a promise to fulfill the job that Barbaro started. We must keep that promise! Let us move forward with passion to keep his legacy alive.

We are BARBARO’S VOICE……let it be heard!!

Thanks for everything you do.

Shelley and Debra

####Thank you, John. It was a lot of work putting ACN together, but the repsonse has made it worth it. Several people emailed me yesterday saying they had made donations in honor of ACN to New Bolton, no greater gift could I have received.

###It was a lovely day yesterday, with so many posts on this site, and so many wonderful tributes paid to Barbaro and the various causes that have begun in his name.

###A lovely AP story on the opening page of AOL this morning about a tribute to Barbaro, being interred "at the site of his greatest victory."

###Harriette, your "book" is wonderful. I am reading it a chapter (or three ;o) a night. Thank you for putting everything together, and thanks also to everyone who contributed to this effort.

###It is amazing, isn't it, what has happened in the past year--and in the past 20 months. I do believe there are many "worlds," many lives that are so much better for all the things that have happened.

###Alex, thank you, again. And again. And again.

Yesterday did not turn out the way anyone had predicted...it was such a rush to see the news pour in about Churchill Downs and the South Dakota decision and Lentenor. Wow! A celebration orchestrated from heaven, to be sure.

But now it is back to the work we have taken on.

We all knew that Barbaro's spirit is alive and well and working through us. Yesterday was definite proof of this. We all came back together, in rememberance of this extraordinary horse and to reach out and helps others. That's what it's all about.

I will continue to miss and love Barbaro. He was so special to me, even though distance separated us. But distance didn't separate him from my heart.

From Harriette today. SO apt, the native American's legacy of all those pieces of paper flying around with nothing of worth, of faith, of promise on them, as it turned out....
************************************************

Waiting tests our grit and faith, and anything else we have on the line. We activate every nerve in us to move, to do something—and then we wait. But if we wait a little longer with patience and endurance, we will know what to do. During this period, we can stir up the gifts that are in us, encourage ourselves to be strong and calm, to find a calm center in the midst of all the whirling debris around us. When we can wait with u li he li s si (joy), it connects us to the right things, puts us in the right place to receive. Joy is not of the emotions but of the spirit, and it can bubble up and grow in our weakest moments.

We have learned that there are many papers in Washington upon which are written promises to pay us for our lands, no white man seems to remember them.

Wasn't yesterday lovely! From anticipating a day of grief, instead it became an uplifting day of joy and reunion. BarbaroNation, we are still strong and united in our common goals. So many of our causes and interests seemed to crystalize on this amazing day. The grace of the Jacksons, the defeat of SD's foray into madness, and the day culminating in the beauty of Jake's ode to Barbaro's memory. Just lovely!

Old friends, welcome back, it was wonderful to see everyone laughing together again. Please stay; we continue, but you've been missed!

####1-30-08 KyEHC Fundraising Update

First of all thanks to everyone for yesterday. It was great to read the comments.

We are making progress in our fundraising effort for the KyEHC. We are trying to raise enough funds ($250.00) to sponsor at least one class in the Kentucky Equine Humane Center All Breeds Horse Show. The sponsorship will be listed as FOB.

I have $25.00 in hand and the pledges of about 8 other people. So, we are very close to meeting the first goal of one class. I would love to see us sponsor more than one class.

If you are interested in helping this well deserved organization please e-mail me at jbryan@bhsi.com.

You can also read much more on the DB board. The link is http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=18926.1

I have always had a great admiration for Jack Van Berg. I believe he is right on in his assessment of the drug situation in racing. There really is no excuse (except money).

I hope the powers at be will listen to him.

Hello everyone,

Working on my reps today, as I know all of you are as well. Calling, faxing and emailing. Ours is a quest that we will see through to its successful end.

Alex, thanks for putting up that link to the article about Jack Van Berg. I had the honor and privilege, truly the honor and privilege, of working for him for eight years. The horses' welfare has ALWAYS come first to him. As evidenced by the article, sadly many in this industry do not feel the same and work needs to be done to change this.

Though he has not won as many races as he has in the past, this gentleman will always be one of the most successful men to ever take a horse to the paddock simply because of what is in his heart....the health and welfare of the horse. Not only that, he is one of the nicest men, truly a heart of gold. He's the real deal. Next to my father and my husband, there's not a man I respect more.

Make it a good, productive, day doing all you can to save our horses.

Love to all.

###Mirabel, am so sorry to hear of your loss. I understand how hard it is not to be here for your Aunt. I too am losing the elders of my family, not much of us left now, it is difficult.

If it's any consolation today is very very wicked. We have 100K (about 60mph) winds steady and gusting higher, many whiteout areas and very cold. Temperature dropped about 13 degrees in a matter of hours. Brrrrrr.

Anyway, you take care of yourself and keep Hans on the mend, and don't worry we're here.

Hi again, Famblee:)

Renee:) You just *BETCHA* :) I am SURE/CERTAIN he was here with every single one of us...HIS FAMBLEE:)

I hope your ankle is 'beinhaved'....:) Love you, Sister in bArbaro!!!

Maribel: I am sorry about your sweet Aunt Winnie...(((((((((((((maribel)))))))))))))

I don't know one thing about this man, Jack Van Berg....but reading about how 'yole' hold him 'high on your list'....well, my 'Barbaro Lessons/Learning' are about to continue:)

Also...I was 'poking around' last night and found something which just 'tickled' me to pieces:) I want to share with you.....

#########

I just wanted to share this with some 'frens':)

For well over a year now, I've been driving by a small ranch on my way to or from town...the man has three horses, he works with them in a circular training corral, they graze here and there along the roadside. Well, I have always been an "animal" person and always thought horses were such beautiful creatures...except since I've "met" Barbaro...I look and feel differently toward them, I feel like I have a 'connection' to them that I didn't have before.

Yesterday on my way home from town, the rancher was outside, so I stopped my car and asked him if I could sometimes feed the horses some baby carrots? He looked at me, looked at the horses, looked back at me and said, "I don't think they'd mind." :) So today on my way to town, I had some apple chunks with me...(not a carrot in the house)..sure enough they were all out in the pasture, so I got to feed them some apple chunks, and I pet them....it was soooooooooo cooooooool for me to be able to do that:)

He is a nice man, he trains them to ride, he just enjoys riding...I asked him if he'd ever heard of Barbaro....he said no...Honestly! When I ask that question and the answer is no....I almost have to pick myself up off the floor! So, I told him about Barbaro, and FsOB and now I'm pretty sure he thinks I might be a little bit "tetched", but I don't care....I just spread the word to anyone who will listen to me. The thing is, I'd NEVER have stopped to ask a complete stranger if I could give his horses some treats...until I met Barbaro:)

I just wanted to share this with you, it made my heart happy and now the man said I will, no doubt, become thier new best friend:)

It made me think of Joe the Horse, and Scout and Ernie and Fitch and Abercrombie and of course, it made me think of Bobby:)

Lynne, that post brings back wonderful memories of shared joy. You were so generous to include us in your new adventures with Rosie, Mister and Blackie. Someday, maybe soon, you will have a horse of your own. Maybe Joe Shelten will help to effect that. Whoever does, you'll have a ton of famblee support here whenever the time is right

NOW I'm off :)

Auntie Cheryl.....It would be a DREAM come TRUE if I am ever able, financially, to own my VERY OWN HORSEY:) I'd have to hit the CA Lottery in order to do that...but THANKFULLY, I have these amazing frens, Horsemommy and daddy, who allow me to 'smother' their own two kidddddds:)

I SINCERELY believe in my HEART:) bArbaro took me to them.....:) They are lovely, gentle horses...NEVER try to 'nip' or behave badly around me, such a NOVICE horseladeee...who called their forelocks 'bangs', 'cause I didn't even KNOW what else to call them!!! LOL!

These two kids are so sweet:) I can even 'play' with *MISTER'S* hooves and fetlocks...he doesn't care WHAT I do with him:) He just LOVES MEEEEE:) And though Rosie isn't as 'relaxed' a personality, when she doesn't really want me to brush her, she simply turns and quietly walks into her stall...that's my 'signal' she's 'not in the mood'....God love her!!

I'm EVER FORTUNATE in meeting these TWO particularly 'kind hearted-gentle' horseys:) and their lovely 'parents':)

And...I just have to say to EVERYONE:) I had so MUCH excitement in my discoveries of these horses...and to be able to come home and sit here and write about it all....and have 'yole' 'ride along with me'....well, it just made it even BETTER....I appreciate every one of you for sharing my journey!!! xxxoooxxx

My letter to my DC contacts in an effort to leverage the successful outcome in South Dakota:

Dear_____
As you are well aware, a proposal in South Dakota to provide a $1 million state loan to construct a horse slaughter plant was voted down Tuesday by a legislative committee. Here are excerpts of an AP article:

"Horse slaughter plant idea in SD withdrawn
The Associated Press
Published Tuesday, January 29, 2008
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Flooded with messages from across the nation by people against the consumption of horse meat, a South Dakota legislative committee killed a bill Tuesday that would have provided a $1 million state loan to construct a plant to slaughter horses.
Before SB170 was killed 7-1, it was changed to call for a study of horse processing. But that, too, was rejected. Sen. Frank Kloucek, D-Scotland, said the nation needs such a plant so horses can be humanely disposed of when people no longer want them or cannot afford to feed them.

Among the few who testified against the bill was state Sen. Theresa Two Bulls. The Pine Ridge Democrat, who is an American Indian, said horses hold a place of honor in Indian society.

"The Lakota people view the horse as a sacred animal," she said.

Legislators on the Senate Agriculture Committee said they received thousands of e-mail messages and phone calls from people who opposed the measure to construct a slaughter plant for horses."

Once again the American people have spoken. Our resolve in ending the insidious practice of horse slaughter will never diminish. In light of the announcement that South Dakota was entertaining thoughts of constructing a horse slaughter plant, citizens from all over the country rallied to voice their opposition. And South Dakota listened.

It is time for members of The 110th Congress to follow suit. S. 311/H.R. 503 has been “marginalized” in DC long enough. What has transpired in South Dakota, and last year in Illinois, should be, must be, recognized by our lawmakers that Americans are dedicated to ending horse slaughter and we will stay the course……no matter what is thrown at us.

Senator Theresa Two Bulls said horses hold a place of honor in Indian society. Given the fact that this nation was built on the backs of horses and today horses serve in police departments and our military, the honor she speaks of must not be indigenous to the Indian society. This nation owes a great debt to the horse. This nation must pay that debt by ending the insidious, barbaric practice of horse slaughter. That will be the first step in honoring our companion animal.

The American people call on you to act now. Our voices will continue to echo through the halls of congress. Our voices have proven to you horse slaughter is not a population control method. The horse slaughter industry survives/thrives on one component and one component only: Europeans’ and Asians’ high demand for horse meat. America’s horses have become an ATM machine for killer buyers.

Many in this congress continue to ignore the facts. Such as, since the three horse slaughter plants in the US have been shut down there has been no increase in reports of abuse and neglect. In addition, the ridiculous notion of “Slippery Slope” has not surfaced. No one in Illinois has approached that state demanding legislation that would offer better conditions for farm animals intended for slaughter and human consumption as a direct result of the horse slaughter ban. This is not surprising as here is another fact, based on history, that is often ignored. Since the state of California banned horse slaughter in 1998 no one has pressured that state to introduce legislation that would offer better conditions for farm animals intended for slaughter and human consumption, again, as a direct result, from their horse slaughter ban.

Finally, everyone I’ve met in DC, senators, house reps, Chiefs Of Staff & aides, when asked the question, “Do you believe in a humane, dignified death for horses?” every single answer has been YES! So the next question is, “With all the testimony by USDA inspectors, veterinarians and other first hand witnesses, in front of House Committees and in court cases, telling of the horrors that America’s horses suffer as direct result of the horse slaughter industry, why are you letting this continue?”

The American people have spoken loud and clear. It is time for members of The 110th Congress to act now. Pass S. 311 and H.R. 503. Doing so will prove that this congress listens to the people and understands that the facts we have presented are irrefutable. Failure to do so will only strengthen our resolve and our efforts will escalate.

Sincerely,
Daryl Smoliak

We need to make sure media outlets get the AP release. Please forward it to local newspapers. Ask them to print it ASAP…..while the news is hot!

I would like to add my thanks to Alex for posting the article about Jack VanBerg. I know Jack and he is a wonderful man with a heart of gold.

Actually, for those of you who remember my horse, I'ma Wild One, I got her from Jack. I fell in love with her when I was in CA at Jack's barn and brought her back East. She didn't do well in CA but won three races here and is now retired to a beautiful home in NJ.

He is an old timer and racing would be better off with more people like Jack still in the game.

Your story with the horsies touched my heart then and still does. Because Cloud lives at Miracle Horse Rescue I don't get to see him as often as I'd like to but when I do the love and affection we share is incredible. For anybody to say that these magnificent creatures have no emotion is a lot of hooey.

Harriette - to say that your courage is an inspiration to all would be an understatement... I will be continuing to enjoy your book in the days and weeks to come.
Laurie - you are far too kind to me... do you have any idea of how much you are loved? BTW, I was searching for receipts and invoices for my sorry little business, "Good Vibes", (for tax day!) when there in the midst of all the clutter was something important - a note from you with your phone number on it! Don't be surprised to hear from me soon, my dear friend.
Dee - your rainbows bring all of us such joy and comfort!
Pat M. - wow, I was so happy to see your post. I was just sitting here in my clown collar....tehe.
Nancy Jean - did I miss your post(s)... where are you my California girl?

Yesterday was an amazing day. Thank you ALEX for making it possible for us to be together. Through all the ups and downs, catfights and squabbles (not that I was ever a part of all that nonsense - sorry, my lame attempt at a joke....) you hung in there WITH us and FOR us. Sincere thanks.

Half day off today, but I can hear my alarm clock blaring upstairs which means time to log off and get ready for work.

((((Maribel))))

Oh, Cathy - I WILL be in touch, as I would LOVE more pictures of Half Moon! Thank you!!!

Love,

extra Wed 1/30 nat'l target list (HAHS)

w/b posted here at Comments and here at the DB

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=19437.1

asap. Celebrated too much last night, haha, and couldn't bear to rouse Pearl from her nest in my lap so got a veeeery late start.

Meanwhile - per ABR Strategy - pls contact your own Senators and Representative (and complete any directions from your group leader) - and if you want to make some more calls to Senators you can attack the AWI/SAPL target list - a good alternate target list of Senators; ABR/DB message 15321.10, link in the DB thread noted above.

Stress the importance of getting S 311 / HR 503 to a vote.

Be sure to tell all your contacts about what almost happened in South Dakota - and spread that VEW white paper far and wide. [link at DB thread]

point being to tell these legislators (in addition to your own) about the SD development. REASON TO EXPEDITE S 311 / HR 503.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to their two 2007 antislaughter releases and their recently-released Jan. 2008 WHITE PAPER are at the DB thread noted.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-459-1887

800-614-2803

ON A LIGHTER NOTE - yesterday my music partner heard me hollering, THE SOUTH DAKOTA BILL IS KILLED! and came to see who was this horse named South Dakota Bill who'd had to be euthanized.

AFTERNOON REPOST

Hooray for Van Berg (thanks Alex for posting...) A voice of reason about the darkness of using drugs. So true, if they are good, they will win. If they aren't right for racing, don't place them on the track with a high percentage of change a limb will be broken. Van Berg is one voice that speaks loudly...

Wonderful letter, as always, Daryl. Thank you.

My deepest condolences, Maribel.

Lynne, your post reminded me of an experience our horses had with neighbors. A young couple would walk down our road everyday for exercise. When they had a baby, they popped her on their backs and kept up their daily walks. Her first words were "Po-Po". Her name for our horses (ponies to her). She wouldn't let them leave the house without carrots for the Po-Po. The horses knew their schedule and would wait at the front gate for them. The parent would turn his/her back to the horses and the little girl would feed them the carrots.

Soon, the little girl decided she was too big for the backpack and wanted to walk herself. She still insisted on feed the horses herself... toddling up to the gate and sticking her hand with the carrot(s) through. Well, what do you think happened next? Everyday at walk time, our two horses could be seen lying down right next to the gate waiting for their carrots. The little girl would toddle over and her carrot filled hand would be at the perfect height for a reclining horse. It was the cutest thing I've ever seen.

I am sure that those horses have no objection whatsoever to your treats! And, I bet they will soon learn your schedule. Have fun!

THANK YOU JACK VAN BERG for saying it loud and clear. I have always thought Van Berg was a class act and can remember how he dealt with Gate Dancer (84 Preakness and SuperDerby winner) when a lot of trainers would have just given up on him. And of course who could forget Alysheba?

I LOVE horse racing. But knowledge of the rampant use of drugs has really kept me from truly adoring it for a long time. I think it says something about the industry when the two top trainers from last year, Todd Pletcher and Steve Asmussen, had such a great past years when both were either on or coming off of drug suspensions.

Whatever happened to breeding good, solid, strong horses with substantial bone and substance? In my opinion, a lot of the drugging began in earnest when everybody started breeding for "pretty" and "speed", not necessarily stamina and endurance combined with speed. Because the frames starting getting so light, then steriods became popular.
Don't get me wrong, I like a pretty horse with lots of speed as much as anybody else, but we need a little more "substance" in these thoroughbreds today---a little heavier horse, and a whole lot LESS drugs.

I have watched while the AQHA has literally destroyed their halter horses over the past twenty years or so with steriods. These Quarter Horse halter horses are so "roided" up some of the mares act like studs and virtually none of them are actually rideable. But boy are they pretty and big, on thin little legs with almost no hoof....

I'll get off my soapbox now....

As far a being a "professional" writer, I think that the portions of the book that you wrote, Harriette, were HIGHLY professional and worthy of being published....I was very impressed with your work and although I am neither a professional writer or editor (or publisher - if I were, obviously this topic would be MOOT since the book would already have been published!), I read voraciously (non-fiction as well as fiction), and know good work when I read it!

You can stand tall along side any "professional" writer.......

Gotta do some work now!

Harriette -
Your book is just wonderful and I love my copy and will cherish it. Also you are just wonderful and I cherish your friendship, as you know. Being a writer who has submitted many (many...) things that have been rejected for some reason, and then seeing something along the same lines published, I learned something. Sometimes it is not what you write, but who you know... Sad but true. And I'm not saying that's a good or bad thing. It just is what it is. I've heard stories where friends have written stuff and it turns out a new friend they make is a publisher. Well, that's how it happens.

I am sure there are some brilliant books in dusty notebooks because the authors are not connected somehow to an outlet for their manuscripts to see the light of day.

Take heart. You have done a great thing, we have loved to be a part of it, and it will be cherished always. Maybe it won't get into the "mainstream" (but who knows...), but it certainly is out in the "lovestream..." {:

Alex has mentioned this writer previously as having approval for a book about Barbaro. She has been working on it for quite some time, even before last January 29.

Her blog is very complimentary of this site and the FOBs in general.

Harriette, If your definition of failure is someone who can speak to the very heart and soul of hundreds of Frens with words of wisdom and offer meaningful and comforting sentiments and perspective in heart wrenching situations allowing those affected to better cope and ultimately turn their hurt into constructive action, then I'd be glad to be labeled the same way! I totally agree with Cathy Potter - your book does represent the very soul of the FOBs and, perhaps, is best kept as a gift to each of us to be "loved and cherished by frens and famblee". Everything happens for a reason; right now I only know we are the lucky recipients of this labor of love - both yours and ours. I surely will always cherish mine. Thank you, Harriette. I'm proud to know you. I BELIEVE

###I apologize to the lady who is writing the book, I reacted before reading all the facts, I just don't want to see Harriette down on herself for something she did out of love for Barbaro. I ditto Linda of NW FLA, she said everything in the very best way. Harriette, please please listen.

Pam Mross - beautifully stated by someone who knows what she is talking about.....
I have laid bare my soul in short stories that were rejected for publication again and again. To make a living in the creative arts requires the soul of a fleeting glimpse and the skin of an elephant, I think. (That might make sense to no one but Dee and Martita!)Anyway,I couldn't cut it!

And Cathy, you are so right - this truly is a priceless work - a gift of love. Something we can cherish and hold dear.

Harriette - tell us you are hearing us and feeling our outpouring of love for you.

HARRIETTE:
Just sent this to K. Feldman....
***********************************************
Many of us have already sent our stories about Barbaro to Harriette Brillianthawk.

But good luck finding people who have/are dealing with physical limitation or illness during the astonishing time Barbaro was fighting it out at NBC... Did you consider contacting Mike Rae's family? Mike was an exercise rider at Fair Hill where Michael Matz trained Barbaro. He took a terrible spill and sustained a grave head injury, but is currently chugging along...Google him and you'll find his blog pages that his sister runs....

You do know about Edgar Prado's book, right? and Alex Brown's book?
**************************************************
HARRIETTE: I too will get in my beat up old (but
well-loved) Ford Windstar and come down there and smack you upside the head. It seems like I'll have to get in line, though.

GIRL! You are talented, and wise and so well-loved in this cyber land of ours. Our stories are YOURS.
It seems that Feldman is looking linking Barbaro's physical courage with people's physical courage...

Who knows. She's a freelance writer--with an agent--it seems. These days, unless you're Edgar or Alex, lol, everything has to go through an agent...and she has some really good pieces in her book, quite a few on B.

But, are we to take her word that Jacksons have given their approval? Did they give their approval for that stupid straw dog of a piece for NYC???
(Um, no....)

So. There's that. Plus, you're can't use this as an excuse to beat up on yourself. I recognize this little gift because I have it too. I'll bet there are lotsa peeples (as Lynne would say) who are also adept at self-flagilation.

You are cherished here. And trusted. And Barbaro called YOU to gather our stories. I look forward to Edgar and Alex's books....but have no idea what unique angle Feldman might have on Barbaro.

Try, try, try to believe US if you can't believe in yourself...lean on us girl, we're there.

Can someone explain to me why our stories (slap me hard cause I didn't finish mine), but anyway, why do our stories need the Jackson's permission. I don't get that? They are our stories.

cathy,
I don't understand that either, many books are written wiht out permission (safer to have it) maybe due to ownership of the big bay boy? Our stories are only good and would be an inspiration.
I don't understand why an FOB would be denied the priviledge and a stranger given it. I never understood this.

Glenda, yes, I can explain if you care to e-mail me. your post was soooo out of order!

i can not fathom why this issue is an issue at all. what kit is doing has nothing to do with other projects nor can her work have any adverse impact on others' projects. sorry, i just DON'T get it in this instance.

Posted by: jonna at January 30, 2008 9:22 PM

I apologize for not reading all the comments but I think that I am getting the general idea. First of all let me say that I am LOVING Harriette's book. You have nothing to beat yourself up about. I have two very dear friends that I know through the Barbaro Love/Prayer vigil which met every night to pray for Barbaro while he was sick. Anyway, these two accomplished women set about to write a book about Barbaro, horses and what brought us all together. They presented a proposal to the Jacksons and were denied. I don't know why and neither do they excspt as someone mentioned before they are just regular people with no agent or real writing experience.
Just because Harriette's book wasn't accepted in no way diminishes her work or the stories that went into it. That's just the way it goes sometimes

Posted by: Joanne Frank at January 30, 2008 9:24 PM

just as an FYI, Kit Feldman has been authorized to write a Barbaro book, and the book is well underway. She has been working on this project for many many months (she interviewed me christmas day 2006). her current request is for a research project she is working on, nothing to do with the book. it is a shame that this becomes an issue, especially at this time!

Alex,
I don't think that we are upset because this person is writing a book but rather we feel upset because more than one FOB including Harriette have been denied approval.

Posted by: Joanne Frank at January 30, 2008 9:32 PM

I refuse to take sides or even comment upon the latest angst here EXCEPT to say that I find it pathetic that all hell seems to have broken loose less than 24 hours after we all observed a very emotional day - loads of memories both happy and sad, the return of some long-lost frens, GREAT news from South Dakota, the announcement of Barbaro's final resting place and Lentanor's name (no more Bubba, thank goodness)...

How does this advance any of our "United Causes"?

Posted by: Nancy in CT at January 30, 2008 9:35 PM

My mother always used to say, when you are ready to be upset by a perceived slight, give yourself 24 hours to think.

Harriette - You know your own value, and so do we.

Glenda - You are a treasure, and don't let yourself be tweaked. At least, dear one, give it my wise old mom's 24 hours, okay?

Love to all - Jean

Judy,
It is so nice to see and talk to you again. I missed you.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at January 30, 2008 9:43 PM

I wasn't aware it was Kit. I know she has been working on this book for a very long time now (before we lost Barbaro...) and doing research. She is a very nice person.

As I said earlier, and it was stated well, "you need to have an elephant's skin" out there, it is tough to get published. I know you walk into a bookstore and see so many books and think, especially if you've been writing, why isn't MY book there, but that is only a fraction of the books not yet bound in the world, believe me. Every book has a "time" and sometimes the time is not right for one, but is right for another.

I use to feel very hurt when I would get the rejection letters... Now I take it in stride and know if it was meant to be published, it would (or will....) be.

But just because it is not published doesn't meant it isn't meaningful, loved and will be cherished by all lucky enough to read it.

Pam

All that work and time and than to get rejected...OUCH! That has to set you back a bit.

This is Joe the Horse. Furst, Aunt Maribul, so sorry about your loss. I'm sad wit you.

It is wary colded here. wary cold. But I am huddles with my otur horsey frens and we keeping warm in the barn. Wary warm.

Yesterday was sad but happy too. I got to see my mommy and got a couple treats. Not many as she is still watching me for a bug to get me again. I don't want a bug again but I do want more treats. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe.

Happy too that my horsey frens in Suth Dakota are safe for now. And so many of my frens on the site came back to say hello. Mommy tolds me everybudy who came back and it made me smile.

What would make me smile more is for everybudy to make more calls, send leturs and all that to the peeples in the big city. Peese do that for me and my frens.

Nuthin matters more than that. So, do that rite now OK. Call somebudy in the big city for me or rite a letur. Peese.

Renee -
One of the best classes I took, an English Lit which was mostly about writing, our professor told us, the first rule is to fully embrace rejection, learn from it and carry on. You just can't take a rejection of any sort personally as there are so many unknown factors in regards to material selling and being marketed by a publisher.

Think about JK Rowling (Harry Potter). Many publishers turned her down, until one decided to take a chance. And we know how that story ends.

I think we are just so emotional about Barbaro.... So things about him are more meaningful and we are sensitive to that. I've written a whole book of poems about him, which I don't intend to try to publish, but I share now and then. It's my own special book.

###
I didn't want to comment on the situation here except to say we had 24 hours of being on such a high (in my case, 48 hours). However...

I am one of those authors that Mrs. Jackson rejected. She did it with graciousness and dignity. Yes, I was hurt and a little angry for a short while. The board was not the place for me to air my feelings and I wouldn't hurt Alex for the world. I had to look inside myself for the deeper lesson here and it took me a while. But looking back, it gave me the time to look at the story and re-tool it into something better - and to focus on "Cassidy" as my first publication instead of "Champion Heart". There's a reason this is happening and one has to look beyond the hurt and rejection. There's a message there for everybody - just look for it. It means there is a different way of doing something that you have to REALLY look for. If you still are stuck, then it means you have to look inside yourself a little deeper until you do understand what is happening and why you are allowing it to happen. Why does this rejection hurt you so much? What happened to you in your past that is still causing you and others around you to suffer? (yes, I'm getting Buddhist here...from the standpoint of the mind being the cause of our suffering) Don't make Kit the target...she is doing what she was given permission to do. There could be long-term benefits that we just don't see right now.

I'm off my soapbox now.

It was so good to see so many familiar "old friends" again yesterday. What a positive day it was.

I looked back at the comments from last year and FOBs were so distraught and had no idea of where TWR was going to go in the future and we, for a few days, maybe weeks, were like a family who is losing a safe-haven home. We had no idea of where we were going or how we were going to get there. The one thought that prevailed was that we were going to stay together somehow.

One year later and look where we are. Thanks to Alex, we have a home from which to "work our Magic"!! Again and again we have found our way back to the path Barbaro wants us to follow. We have become a strong force in bringing change to horses' lives. We have grown so much as a group of like-minded individuals who have a common purpose, save and help as many horses as we can.
Today is the day to renew our purpose and gather steam and hit those faxes and make those calls. It goes on and we can't stop until horses in America are safe.

What a day yesterday was. What a year this is going to be... together!!

Love to all my FOB frens.

No one is fighting......
"all hell has" NOT "broken loose".......

One of our own was feeling down and some of us tried to lift her up and make sure she understands her true value to us.

Some who know the publishing business have shed some light on how things work behind the scenes.

Some have offered their own stories of how they deal with rejection or perceived rejection.

It's all good.

HAY i didn't even CONSIDER seeking approval for a book because I KNEW I'd be rejected, so why should I put my self "out there" for that. of course, my talents are questionable, and that had as much to do with my decision as the inevitable "thanks but no thanks". But that doesn't make me feel werfless. just gives me more impetus on working on the things that I can do well. what were those things again?

seriously, there are books and there are books. There are great books that don't get good recognition and there are crappy ones that sell millions. There are subjects worthy of writing and recognition that no one writes about and there are subjects that are repeated over and over. and the new versions of the old subjects still sell.

I heard very wise words from someone who knows much more about such thinks than I, who said that the writing profession is much like living life in a revolving door. You keep going round and round, stepping out for a moment and getting thrown right back in...round and round til one day somebody says "yes" and writes you a check for an advance on sales. It's more like gambling. Someone else I knew a long time ago asked no one in particular "why do they read this crap? I don't even like it".

none of these comments are drawn to resemble anyone here. The points are that sometimes what we believe is wonderful is lost on others, but it's enough that we believe it is wonderful. Eventually another idea will be embraced by others to be as wonderful as we knew it to be all along. We just have to keep trying.

Okay Lynne, spill the details. Did I read about him on the DB? Sounds sorta familiar to me... He is some sort of rescue I take it? Mister will be sooo jealous! What can you tell us about your new guy?

Posted by: Kathy In SC at January 31, 2008 12:27 AM

OMIGOD LYNNE!!!!!!!!!!!! I read about him yesterday!!!! I am so happy for you! he sounds wonderful in spite of his sore feet, and it broke my heart that his people were going to let him go to auction. That place in Chino is horrid. HORRID. not where he's staying, Safe Haven is a beautiful place, but the auction place in Chino, and others in Riverside County are just hideous. There's one off the I60 that I used to have to drive when I had jobs out there and I couldn't look. The lots were always filled with quarterhorses and you guessed it, paints. SICKENING. I couldn't look. This was twelve to fifteen years ago, mind you. Who would have thought that TODAY you would be the proud mommy of this lovely boy.

SEEEEEEEEEEE???? I TODE YA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am totally expelling my nachos
