updates are now here.

Update 3024: Anyone who wants to know how great Barbaro was as a racehorse just needs to listen to his exercise rider: Brette recalls thrill of riding Barbaro.

Update 3023: Press release from New Bolton Center regarding visits to New Bolton today by FOBs Laura J Smith and Lyn Gilbert and the fundraising gifts they donated (and pictures): Barbaro's legacy endures as anniversary approaches.

Update 3022: A cool blog post about FOBs: You've Got to Have Fans.

Update 3021: The Jackson's are hosting a press conference tomorrow in Kentucky: Jacksons at Churchill Downs 1/29/2008.

Update 3020: A pleasant evening spent at Sam Houston Race Park. I stayed from about the second race to the seventh. One of the horses I ride ran in the seventh, but did not run too spectacularly. I left then just in time to miss another horse I ride win the eighth! Always my good timing! A day off today.

Please keep calling and writing. Note the additional needs in South Dakota.

Harriette's much needed Cherokee devotional for today:
************************************************
Speak to me of serenity, of treasures yet to be found, of peace that flows like a river. Tell me of tranquil places that no hand has marred no storm has scarred. Give me visions of standing in sunlight or the feeling of spring mist against my cheeks as I live and move and breathe. Show me the paths that wind through wild lilies and beds of buttercups. Sing me songs like the mingled voices of wrens and meadowlarks, the lowing of gentle cows, the soft mother call of a mare and her colt. Lead me past a glass smooth pond where frogs croak of coming out parties, their graduation from frisky tadpoles to squat green frogs. Find me a place ion the sunlight to sit and think and listen to the sweet inner voice that says so quietly, “Peace, be still.”

Hay Pennsylvania, our horses need your help!

As Shelly and Debra have repeatedly told us, we cannot get these bills to a full vote without MORE COSPONSORSHIP. Pennsylvania is a big Ag state, and we are fighting a tough lobby. WILL YOU HELP US?

We also need help fighting against the potential new SH in South Dakota.

We are Team Barbaro Pennsylvania. Our team is now close to 60 strong and we’d like more of you to join us! We have 9 legislators who have not co-sponsored the bills. We are experiencing success! We do need more assistance, however...

There are 3 or 4 names to call, fax or email each day Monday through Thursday. It takes but a few moments to speak for the HORSES!

I am the Pennsylvania State Leader. Please email me if you’d like to join our Team Barbaro Pennsylvania and get on the emailing list for targeting our PA Senator and Reps who have not yet agreed to support the anti-slaughter legislation. You can email me at Lor's Email Addy.

OUR HORSES NEED YOUR HELP!

A few minutes each day for our Horses it not much to ask.

WE GET IT.

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous G and all of their wonderful fren and relations in Equine Heaven.

Down below, we have our work cut out for us on their behalf, so light up the South Dakota switchboards...!! The relevant numbers can also be found below...calling blue linkers, calling blue linkers...

MORNING POST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI

STRATEGY FOR MONDAY JANUARY 28

As most of you know by now, South Dakota State Senate has introduced a bill to finance a horse slaughter facility. The Bill was brought up on January 22 and is already scheduled for a hearing at 9:30AM on January 29. We must act quickly to keep this from happening. Please go to the thread on the DB under Anti Slaughter titled SOUTH DAKOTA CONTACT LISTS. You will find all the information necessary to contact the South Dakota State legislators.
This is just the sort of thing that brings home how very important it is to get the Federal Legislation passed. Horse slaughter is not illegal in South Dakota!

This is also the perfect time to call on your own Senators and Representatives and let them know of this development. Remind them of the urgency of getting S311 and HR503 passed so that American horses can never again be slaughtered.

On the first anniversary of Barbaro’s death, our work has been cut out for us. It is no coincidence that this hearing is on January 29 but it is another message from Barbaro for our help. Many of you that have been missing for a while have rejoined us for this sad day. This also means that there are more of you out there to make these calls.

So, while you are lighting candles in remembrance of our beloved Barbaro, also light up that South Dakota switchboard! What better tribute can we pay than to move forward with determination to carry on Barbaro’s mission!!

Please join our efforts and help us to stop South Dakota from passing a bill that will finance a horse slaughtering facility.

Remember….WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!

Thanks for all your help.
Shelley and Debra

###1-28-08 Kentucky Equine Humane Center Fundraiser

Hi Everyone

I am starting a fundraising effort to raise $250.00 to sponsor a class in the Kentucky Equine First Annual All Breeds Horse Show. The horse show will be held in Shelbyville, KY on March 29, 2008. All proceeds from the horse show will go to support the operations of the Kentucky Equine Humane Center. Don?t you think it would be a great idea to have a FOB sponsored class???

If you are interested in supporting this effort please send me a check (as I don?t have any electronic means of accepting donations). You may e-mail me (jbryan@bhsi.com) privately with your pledge and I will send you the mailing information. I will maintain a list of contributors and post updates once a week. The deadline for donations will be March 1, 2008. Please note that these donations will not be tax deductible. If you want to make a tax deductible donation please go directly to KyEHC?s website and make a donation per their instruction.

You may ask what will happen if more than $250.00 is raised. If there is enough to sponsor another class(es), that will be done. If not, the remaining money will be donated directly to KyEHC.

Kentucky Equine Humane Center (KyEHC) was started by Stacie Hancock and others. Staci Hancock has been instrumental on the horse rescue scene for quite some time. She insisted that Gato del Sol be brought home from overseas to live the rest of his life out at Stone Farm and be treated as a Kentucky Derby winner deserves.

Lori Naegle is the Executive Director. Lori Naegle was a cofounder of Re Run. So, there is a great deal of experience in this organization. One of the appealing aspects about this rescue is they will take all breeds. Some of you may recognize this organization. A FOB rescued a paint (named Willie) for $50.00 and KyEHC took him in. He had an eye infection which resulted in him having to have his eye removed. You can read more about him on Alex?s Discussion Board Refer to 11152.1

Here is their mission statement.
MISSION STATEMENT
To provide humane treatment and shelter while working as a clearinghouse to seek adoptive homes for all of Kentucky's unwanted equines, regardless of breed.
To educate the public and raise awareness for responsible equine ownership so that fewer horses end up in crisis.
To work with and serve as a model for organizations with the same mission in other states: to save America's equines from inhumane treatment.

OK: This works:
If you call the Senate operator (773-3821)
or the Representatives operator (773-3851)
you can leave a message for all the members on your list. One message for all of them...the operators were fine with this.

THE MEMBERS DO NOT HAVE INDIVIDUAL VOICE MAIL NUMBERS.

And as far as I can tell, unless we're going to be using their home numbers, or faxing (no fax here) we will be calling the main switchboard over and over again...

As they say in South Dakota: okey-dokey.

Tomorrow will be a very hard day for all of us. I still can't believe it has been a year. I still miss Barbaro today as much as the day he left us and went to run with Foggy, Ruffian, Gallant Secret and all of our fur babies. In his short life he managed to accomplish so much and still to this day he is living through the FOB's. We will continue our fight in his HONOR and get the bill passed. We will let the world know that WE GET IT!

Am looking forward to a beautiful tomorrow, with fond memories of Barbaro and all that has been accomplished in his name throughout this year and the eight months prior.

I know it will be a wonderful day tomorrow because the rain storms of this weekend (all lebenty-seben of 'em ;o) are gone and we are going to have beautiful weather.

With luck Joe will be able to post. Have missed my daily reading of his journal at TBFriends, thanks to the northern version of those same lebenty-seben storms.

Let us all keep our eyes forward tomorrow, envisioning many more causes brought to successful conclusions, to the friendships we have formed and the wonderful people we have come to know, ranging from Tim and Penny, dear Alex, Michael, Peter, Edgar, Dr Richardson and the wonderful folks at New Bolton, the hard-working ladies and gentlemen at Kennett Square, most expecially the Jacksons--and countless others who are working hard for horses and other four-leggeds that are unable to take care of themselves. This has all been because of Barbar.

THIS is his legacy.

I can't say much more or will be unable to concentrate on my job for remainder of day. I find these dying words of St. Francis of Assisi to his followers can be put on Barbaro's tongue to us: I have done what was mine to do; now you must do what is yours.

Barbaro
Forever in my heart.

Will this pain ever end? I try to find solace in the fact that you are free now........free to run when you want, forever young and beautiful, forever free of pain and the constraints of Earth.

But it's just so hard.

You are at the edge of every thought I have today. You are just beneath the surface of my skin. You weigh heavy on my shoulders and are the tears behind my eyes.

I want to remember you with joy and I have to believe that some day I will. But today is not that day. Today my heart is still heavy with the loss of you. Today my heart is wrapped in sorrow.

How did you touch me this way? A horse I never breathed or felt.......

I want only the impossible - I want you back.

Love,
Glenda

Good Morning Famblee

I'M HERE AND I'M CALLING (and FAXing seems to be the way to go with South Dakota.)

I'm so glad to see Barbaro's famblee with guns a'blazin' and letting South Dakota know that a "horse processing facility" aka SLAUGHTERHOUSE is unacceptable.

Renee....Sweetie! So glad you're back. You were sorely missed last week. Hope your ankle is feeling a bit better.

MHR HAY DRIVE....only a couple days left to purchase your tickets. The wonderful thing about our fundraisers is that the winner receives really great prizes and the proceeds go to feed the horses. Mr. Boxcar will be drawing the winner sometime tomorrow so get your tickets before it's too late.

OK my famblee.....back to work on SD. Please keep the phones and FAX machines burning with our calls.

AFTERNOON REPOST

My friends,

Well, it appears our vigil for Barbaro tomorrow may not be silent. And how appropriate that we honor him tomorrow by making those calls and working to end this heinous practice of horse slaughter. That beautiful animal did not die in vain. We will take our grief and turn it into action for all horses.

Rest in peace, dear Barbaro. May Harriette's beautiful words describe your heavenly home.

In firm resolve,
Kathy from Toledo and the cats

Thank you for your ever-present kindness, Cathy. Next time you visit Cloud, please give his next-door-neighbor, Half Moon, a kiss or a scritch or whatever he might tolerate that day (!) from me.

I'll pop over to the MHR site to help out with the hay drive tonight from home. Everyone has been so generous with the fantastic prizes, haven't they? (Might be time for me to make something special from my jewelry supplies to offer for a future contest....turquoise and smoky quartz look great together. Hmmmm.)

Well, thanks again. I always appreciate your posts and really do hope to meet you some day at MHR. I started "laying the groundwork" recently by suggesting to my husband that he should plan a golf trip to Myrtle Beach then casually mentioned that I could probably get a pretty cheap flight to Vegas sometime after he gets back......too many animals for us to go on trips at the same time anyway! We don't have the money to do either of these things, but you never know! Our fearless leader is supposed to be sending us some $$$$$ to boost the economy, right?

WITH HER PERMISSION TO POST, THESE ARE RESPONSES THAT ONE OF OUR FOB'S GOT FROM SENATOR RYAN MAHER OF SOUTH DAKOTA. I WAS SO SHOCKED.......

What is our suggestion as to what we should do with all of these horses that are no use any longer. Can we ship them all to FL for you to feed. If they are left to fend for themselves they will stave to death, many of them don't even have teeth anymore. Do realize that by the middle of this next week it will be about 20 below 0 up here.

If we stop horse slaughter what is next, Cattle, Chicken, Hogs? Then what happens to the US food supply. As a person who raises cattle for a living and who's family has been raising cattle for over 100 years, this more than just about horse slaughter. Most Americans live in cities and don't have a clue about what life is like out here on the open prairies of western South Dakota.

With the crisis in SD we need some GOOD NEWS, and I'm also reposting for those who don't have computer access on the weekends...

I am just so proud of you generous people I can hardly contain myself - today Lyn Gilbert will present New Bolton's Laminitis Fund with a check for $7,000 for the "Honoring Barbaro's Life and Legacy" tribute. A supplement check will be issued later in the week as there are several hundred dollars outstanding and people still requesting to make PayPal donations (lyn.gilbert@gmail.com) through the 29th! Although I never posted a goal for this campaign, I did have an "internal goal" of $5,000 which, for a variety of reasons, I wasn't sure we'd attain...SILLY ME!

There are many people to thank, but FIRST on the list is Padme (Lyn Gilbert), who graciously took on the job of Treasurer of this operation! I kept a spreadsheet of pledges which she had to keep updated with actual funds received...a thankless task for sure! (This is the second time I've asked her to do this...I dare not press my luck and ask again!) BRAVA, LYN! And also I'd like to thank her for taking care of delivering the rose and card to Dr. Kathy Anderson at Fair Hill and, of course, for representing us at New Bolton today.

The following people will receive a white rose in a bud vase with greenery, decorated with ribbons in Lael Stable colors and adorned with an FOB pin, and also a personalized note from me on behalf of the Fans of Barbaro: Alex (no, he wasn't mentioned before because he's always "snooping around" and we wanted to surprise him); Dr. Anderson; Peter Brette; Eduardo; Michael Matz; Edgar Prado; Dr. Richardson; Dr. Sweeney. Mr. & Mrs. Jackson will receive a bud vase, decorated in the same way, with two white roses and also one red rose representing Barbaro's Kentucky Derby triumph...

(Updated to include two wonderful people I forgot to mention...I should NEVER try to do something important when I have a fever...) Special thanks and my gratitude are due to the following people:

Mercy from FL & Bev in SC, for donating the beautiful green/blue rhinestone FOB pins (maybe another fundraiser in the making?)...

Sophie's Lee for his dramatic, understated ideal of "one perfect rose" which, to me, symbolizes that Barbaro was a perfect specimen of a horse...

Anna from TX for donating the beautiful large note cards on which I wrote messages for the recipients...

Our dear "bird-man" Jake, who kindly translated my message to Eduardo into Spanish to make it "reader-friendly"...

Our dear friends Alie and Rachel at Kennett Florist - it was only in dealing with two florists in Florida and one in Texas who don't know about us that I realized what fantastic customer service we have received from these famblee members for the past 20 months - THEY GET IT!...

Lynda P and Julie Z in TX, for taking care of the presentation to Alex at Sam Houston tonight...

Everyone who bumped this thread, who spread the word through emails, or in any other way served as a tribute cheerleader...

Sharon C for being sure that the AP article mentioned the presentation at New Bolton on Monday...

And, finally, to all of you who gave from your hearts to help defeat this insidious disease, pat yourselves on the back for a job well done...ALL FOR THE LOVE OF THAT BIG BOSS HORSE!

With heartfelt appreciation and blessings to all of you,

Nancy

I am honored to be reading the posts today. What a beautiful group! From the white roses for Barbaro's people, to the $7,000 plus raised in a few short weeks to help put laminitis behind us, to the hell-hath-no-fury reaction to the pork-barrel nonsense in SD. We are all here together, the mighty house that Barbaro built. Look what a year has brought.

A year ago today, we felt what was coming... if love could have changed it... we would have lifted Barbaro with our own hands and carried his weight willingly.

A year ago tomorrow.. a thousand hearts knew we were in this for the long haul. So many people here re-kindled their connection to horses or discovered it for the first time. For eight months, children reminding their parents it was 7:00, time to pray for Barbaro. Almost two thousand horses saved from slaughter and counting. Wow.

I hope we have done Barbaro's legacy proud this year. Next year, too. Holding grace and peace in our hearts as we round the turn for home, sharing our time together like the precious gift of Barbaro.

Churchill Downs has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday, the anniversary of Barbaro's death, that will include the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner 's owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson.

The Jacksons have have been considering locations for the Derby winner's ashes, but Churchill officials would not discuss the topic of the announcement.

Barbaro broke a leg shortly after the start of the Preakness Stakes and was euthanized after months of treatment because of a painful hoof disease called laminitis.

Following the 10 a.m. announcement, the Jacksons will conduct a charity autograph signing in the Kentucky Derby Museum lobby from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. to benefit a laminitis research fund at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center, where Barbaro was treated.

Just read the press conference announcement. I think they are only announcing his remains will be there - not actually placing them there tomorrow. I'm sure there would be a memorial when they do that..... The beautiful memorial brought some closure with John Henry. I am hoping for that with B. Maybe I assumed..... The heart connection is so strong with him - maybe there is never true closure - only a smaller space, and we just go on..... I'm rambling, sorry.

Of course, in the end I realize it is their decision - but I hope tomorrow is only an announcement of their plans.....

Dear Famblee ..... It is no mistake that my ferrier will be here tomorrow at 8:30 am (time for the vigil) ........ and that I will be outside with him ... as he does magic pedicures with my herd. It will be 3 hours of standing close to my herd ...... exchanging breath .... and being grateful for their friendship. As .. it is no mistake that this disturbing SD stuff is rearing it's ugliness .. and that tomorrow will be the day of the hearing. I have no doubt that our Beloved Barbaro provides opportunities for us to continue to work on his and his frenz behalf .... and the timing of both my ferrier appointment and the hearing are no coincidence.
For many of us - the need to make calls and continue heavy correspondence with the SD politicians will be a bit of a distraction ....from the grief ..... that we all carry with us at all times .. but - especially today and tomorrow. I have already used a box of tissues today .... as I've ready equine-heaven and many sharings of feelings.
I am here - I am going nowhere ....... the horrors will cease .......... the legislators will finally "get it" .... and the no brainer legislation will pass.

**MY ANGELS ABOVE**

Soothing rain fall upon my back, sweet smell of morning dew doth follow, billowy clouds welcome sunlit skies....

Oh Mother Earth, shine bright, welcome me with pleasant sights and sounds, of birds I hear, crackling branches, withering amidst the wind, a cock doth crow, a new day begins....

what wonderous journeys does my path find today?

first steps upon that gravel salt, henceforth I linger on rich, fertile, green pastures stroke my hooves as dirt caste upon the splendor of my stride...

upward glance, nostrils robust to that scent of fresh air, it tranquilize my brain 'till a sudden whisper shed my ear...

new spirits await me, come to greet me, bring smiles, nickers, story of fate that cross that Bridge, wanton and lost, but alone they are not...

for caste upon begotton ground, dream angels' voices do set you down, covet you with strange tidings....glory...what "that" you say?

Tears you leave behind that trail, cares, riches, accolades you share.....alas gifts of gratitude, angels, by their wings deliver you unto me....

Comfort, love, all things good we both shall share....with paradise all goodness come to pass, for new life breeds Rainbows, colors your Dreams, Hopes, Everything that is You....

for an Angel awaits you, new friend, and that Angel is Me.....forever your Human Glory....

Forever, Barbaro!

Do you think we could do a media blitz again, have a forum letter and blitz it to all the newspapers/media outlets in SD and then all the media throughout the US? That would kick arse!

Hello Family! Just now being able to check in. Crazy day at work with trainings and no computer access!

Prayers, thoughts and memories to Barbaro, the Jacksons, Michael Matz, Edgar Prado, heck, EVERYONE involved in Big B's life and "afterlife"......

God Bless.....FOB FOREVER....

Thinking of Edgar, Eduardo, Michael Matz, Peter Brette, Alex and of course the Jackson clan. On we go. All of us. But what an essence we share.
Look at what we have made happen--in one short year.

I guess if I was to respond to some of these usless pro-HS bloggers, I'd just have to say GET A LIFE.

We are the House that Barbaro Built. We have things to do. We are even felt across the ocean in a cold pasture in Belgium.

Hay, FOB's!

Have not been home long at all...and I'm still soaking in the day. Will have a longer post later tonight or early tomorrow morning.

The check is safely in the hands of UPenn and there were photographs taken of me and Laura presenting our respective checks to Dr R. He had just come out of surgery and was so charming. It was wonderful. Dr. Sweeney was there and we met Libby who is a doll -very down to earth, no pretentions - she has the quiet confidence of a perosn who not only loves what she is doing, but is in the right place at the right time and is fulfilling her purpose.

Laura showed us the limited edition prints that Dr. R graciously signed and dated. She has such a gift.

The flowers were delivered to NBC this morning by KF - there were a couple of rose arrangements at the front desk and Dr. Sweeney and Dr. R received their roses as well. We were in the conference room for about an hour just chatting and having a lovely time.

Nobody cried.

It was a happy time. Then Jennifer Rensch took us on the tour. And I got to see the one place I've wanted to see ever since seeing Sabina's photo of it...

The Recovery Pool.

It is awesome.

The weather - for January - was perfect. Cold, yes, but the sun is still shining and its 4:30 p.m. EST.

When the tour was done we went back to the front desk and there was an FOB I havent' seen in a LONG time...dear Della Micah was there and she had put a sign up on the gate. We talked for a while, took pictures of the sign and then drove down to Kennett Florist and stayed there for a while. I have my roses at home now.

I need some time to absorb today...it was intense, but in the happiest of ways.

Healing, Love, Peace

Lyn....Thank you SO much for sharing your time at NBC with us all....

I'm remembering this day last year, how scared I was...lighting candles like crazy, praying SO hard that somehow Barbaro would 'do it again'...rally, be a happy boy....show us all he wasn't going ANYWHERE....he'd be staying put, right there at New Bolton!! My treat basket would be delivered in the morning and he'd be enjoying those goodies:) I hoped...

It's a difficult time....remembering everything, knowing now how it all turned out....

I'm ever grateful to be here with 'yole':)

LYN! What a day. It sounds like it was just about perfect. And no tears. That's good too.

One of the things FOBs have funded--I'm pretty sure--is an additional recovery pool. Like so many things in life, it is so simple a solution and so totally brilliant. That last picture of Matz standing and watching Barbaro in the pool (one of the last surgeries, remember who sick it made us all feel...) all I could think was thank god for the recovery pool...

I am off to dinner at my sister's house with my dad. No one in my family GETS IT. That's why I am so grateful for all of you....

Take care, make those calls....those poor Leetle
Switchboard women. Oy. Bet they'll be glad when today is over....but from all I could gather, Anti-HS peeples hit them like a ton of bricks.
They knew right away what I was calling about. That's a good sign....

Hay, FOB's!

The one thing I will say is that Dr. R was smiling, more relaxed than what I expected (since he had been in surgery this morning...all we know is he was operating on a mini Appaloosa). It was great to see him smiling.

We couldn't take a look in ICU, but we were standing outside by the window of Barbaro's stall...Laura did get a picture of where Barbaro was grazing in Dec. 2006.

Did not get to see Mocha...she was a bit under the weather recently, but by all accounts appears to be better...

Oh, I hope Libby can come to the July event...she is WONDERFUL!!!!

I know tomorrow is going to be difficult for many of you. Just remember how we were brought here and look at all the amazing good we all have done...each in our own way. Barbaro is happy and he does watch over us...all of us.

You all amaze me.

Dear Frens,

One year ago, right about this time of the evening we were all praying, so hard. There was a melancholy vibration piercing through the faith we so hopefully mustered.

I think it was his spirit, trying to comfort us, for he knew that it his time to go was drawing near.

Pain was not for him. Even the love that covered and sustained him was no match for the pain.

God was getting ready to welcome our precious colt, even as we prayed.

Laurie's beautiful Tuck-In was such a great comfort.

In tears, we laid our heads on our pillows, pulling Laurie's words over our heads...but, under the covers, the melancholy, drear and dread, numbed our hearts, for the breaking to come.

Even after one whole year, our hearts break again, at the memory of losing him.

Fill your hearts, this long cold night, with warm loving memories of our dear BARBARO, and the world of Love and Frenship that lives on within us.

Your FOB Fren, O

STRATEGY FOR TUESDAY JANUARY 29

Tuesday is very special for the FOB’s. One year ago this day at 10:30AM Barbaro lost his valiant struggle and left us to carry on his legacy. This is the day we celebrate the life of our wonderful hero who started many of us on this journey. It is only befitting that we use this day to do what he would have wanted. The South Dakota State Senate Committee hearing is scheduled for 10AM Central time. (11AM EST). Let’s flood those phones first thing in the morning before that hearing. Let’s make those calls for Barbaro!!! It is no coincidence that this hearing is on January 29 but is yet another message from Barbaro for our help. Many of you that have been missing for a while have rejoined us for this sad day. This also means that there are more of you out there to make these calls.

As most of you know by now, South Dakota State Senate has introduced a bill to finance a horse slaughter facility. The Bill was brought up on January 22 and is already scheduled for a hearing at 10AM on January 29.

This is also the perfect day to call on your own Senators and Representatives and let them know of this development. Remind them of the urgency of getting S311 and HR503 passed so that American horses can never again be slaughtered.

It's been a long year.....thanks to everyone for all your help.

I just loved reading the article that quoted Peter speaking about our boy; it was like old times and Peter knew what it was like to ride Barbaro as much as anyone did- except Michael.

It was so great to hear about Barbaro's brilliance and just fun to read recent thoughts from Peter.

We love you Barbaro.

Nice to see the faxes and switchboard busy in S. Dakota. Hope they heard us loud and clear today.

There are only a few events in a lifetime where you remember where you were and every detail and January 29 last year was one. Honoring Barbaro and his tremendous spirit, we will never give up until every horse is safe.

Harriette - the most precious gift, I am halfway through reading it, and it is brilliant!
Everybody should get the chance to read it - maybe one day...

Alex - so nice to hear Brette talk about Barbaro and the feeling it gave him to ride him! Put a smile on my face for sure.

This family is one amazing FAMILY!!! :) Kat

Please check out the thread on the DB about the event in DC for March 3 and 4th. We need a count and would love a strong showing from the FOB's. The thread is titled Invitation From Paula Bacon.

This is going to be very exciting and a great chance to really make our voices heard. Deb and I are looking forward to meeting many of you.

Wishing everyone Sweet Barbaro Dreams tonight. Sleep well knowing that he has been loved more than perhaps any other horse ever and that he knew that while he was here on earth and knows it even more now that he is in "hevvin'"!
Hear his thunderous hoofbeats running above and feel his sweet breath on your cheek.

Hi Ernie. So good to see you post. And what beautiful words.

Alex:

I love reading about Peter and his riding Barbaro. He knew Barbaro from a perspective that few ever did. It was probably so close to feeling like flying - like gravity wouldn't even affect them.

This song just came to me tonight when I was thinking of Barbaro, it reminds me of his power (and now our power):

The Eagle and the Hawk (John Denver)

I am the eagle, I live in high country

In rocky cathedrals that reach to the sky

I am the hawk and there's blood on my feathers

But time is still turning, they soon will be dry

And all of those who see me

And all who believe in me

Share in the freedom I feel when I fly

Come dance with the west wind and touch on the mountain tops

Sail oer the canyons and up to the stars

And reach for the heavens and hope for the future

And all that we can be

And not what we are

I am usually brimming with words.
Not tonight. I will just pile the greyhounds around me, put on my fuzzy red bathrobe (you know who you are with the comparable festive robe known in your home as The Pink Blob...)

I love you all. What a quilt we are. I rewad some anti-FoB garbage today. I marvel that ANYONE could be cynical about FoBs and what we have accomplished in a year....365 days. Such a little moment in time.

I am numb, though. And tired. I want him back. And I can't have that. I will be with all of you tomorrow. and will call SD and will just keep going till the terrors of horse slaughter are gone.

I am still floating a little with our recent rescues with HR Europe. Everyone should be so proud that the Fresian mare in foal, the two black Percheron mares, and the delicious roan Belgian Sophie and her papa, Cognac were rescued largely through FoB efforts.

Vanessa: what a prize you have stumbled upon. I wish your TB all the best. You are so very welcome here...

My dear courageous famblee. What a story Peter Brette shared with us. How lucky we are. I wonder if he dreams Barbaro...just dreams he is flying
again on that amazing, young, marvelous bay colt.

Sleep tight: Tomorrow is another day to get it right. And so we will. xxoo: j

Thank you, Alex, for posting Peter Brette's thoughts on Barbaro. He rode him every day. That makes for an incredibly close relationship. B's loss to Peter must have been truly heartbreaking...I read a line somewhere where Peter said that Barbaro wasnt a good horse that ran a great Kentucky Derby, he was a great horse who ran a good Kentucky Derby. You can feel that greatness whenever Peter talks about our beautiful, undefeated Barbaro.

I always felt Peter Brette must have been one of those most devastated when Barbaro was injured. He, more than anyone, knew and actually felt, the unique power and magnificence of this horse. Riding him each day had to be a dream come true. He reminds us all that Barbaro deserves to be honored and remembered as a great racehorse. We wish that we could have seen more of this blazing excellence!

What is remarkable is that he will be remembered not only for that, but also for being a great inspiration...a "hero of a different color" who truly affected change without speaking a word. Adaptability and heart, along with excellence, showed us all a better way. May we continue on that path.
