    Barbaro Updates: 494

    updates are now here.

Update 3011: Santa Anita canceled again today: S.A. Cancels; Hopeful for Millions.

Update 3010: My HRTV interview is sunday, not saturday. An update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:

Today is frigid Friday. All horses are going well and getting ready for another work day tomorrow. They are all finding partners that match up to ability and fitness level. Powdered Donut and Rosie, Rocky and Paris, Kitty and Molly all workout together. Robbie and Tim weigh much the same (I can not disclose how much or Tim would kill me) and are evenly matched when breezing horses together. Gator Nation is feeling good after having a little break. Perhaps he is feeling a little too good because he dropped Robbie. Both horse and rider made out fine and everyone returned to the barn safely.

Update 3009: Another mucky morning this morning at Sam Houston Race Park. It rained on and off all morning and the track was already a mess from the persistant rain we have endured for the last few days. Actually everything is a mess. We had nine sets, six before the break and three after the break. All mine went nicely for the most part. One was a little kean, and he is probably the biggest horse at the track, and you have to give him his head when galloping or he will simply drag you over his head. Galloping him in the rain can be tricky. We did survive.

As I was cleaning tack Becky Witzman of HRTV called, I am going to do a phone interview tomorrow, about 9:30 am west coast time. When she learned where I was she was more kean for me to pet Golden Hare for her than worry about what we would talk about tomorrow.

Update 3008: War Pass tops the 2007 Experimental Free Handicap at 127 pounds, seven pounds ahead of Pyro, Dixie Chatter and Into Mischief. Indian Blessing leads the filly division at 123 pounds: War Pass Tops Experimental.

Diabolical was fourth in his Dubai debut behind the typically impressive Asiatic Boy: Asiatic Boy Romps in Al Shindagha.

    Please keep calling and writing.

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George and the rest of the glorious gang in Equine Heaven.

For us, down here, for them, up there:

    MORNING POST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI

    STRATEGY FOR FRIDAY JANUARY 25

We’ve gotten some great feedback from National Call In Day. Thanks to all of you who contributed to this effort to make it a success. Now is the time to keep the momentum going!! Our Senators are back in DC and we must kick it up a notch. We’ve been told that the best thing to do, until further details are worked out, is to continue to call leadership to get this legislation to the floor. So, until we hear further, we will continue to post the Leadership numbers. Also, it is crucial that you still call your own senators and representatives that may be sitting on the fence.

In the past few weeks, newspapers have been full of news about the impact of the closure of the U.S. horse slaughterhouses last year. They are saying that abandonment, abuse, and horses found left on the roadside has increased. They have even been asserting ridiculously that there are now thousands of unwanted horses roaming around the country. They then warn that passing legislation to ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter will have even more dire consequences for our poor horses than what we are seeing now. YOU MUST SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT. Make sure that your Senators don’t fall for this propoganda.

LIST WITH LEADERSHIP OFFICE TELEPHONE NUMBERS

Senate Majority Leader: Harry Reid ph: 202-224-2158 fax: 202-224-7327

Senate Minority Leader: Mitch McConnell ph: 202-224-3135 fax: 202-226-1374

Senate President Pro Tempore: Robert C. Byrd ph: 202-224-3954 fax: 202-228-0002

The State Groups still need help in many areas. For those of you who would like to get involved, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net. Or you can find your own state leader listed below on the WIKI page. You will find it very rewarding!!

Good Friday morning FOBs - TGIF

As we bring this work week to a close, let's keep up the pressure to end horse slaughter.

Mary S. - I'll be at work that time of the morning, but will try to get a few minutes to join in the vigil.

Robyn - where are you? I hope you're feeling OK.

Have a great day everyone and my prayers for all those in need.

    Janice
    A forever FOB

Posted by: Janice from Florida at January 25, 2008 12:26 PM

    Hay, FOB's!

I will spend the 29th at the place I was last year at 10:30 - at the ranch. I will stop and pray - hopefully surrounded by the boys or just hugging Shakkah...but I need to be around horses at that time.

As it comes down to preparing for Monday's cashier's check presentation at New Bolton (Laura, safe journey here...will see you and your hubby and Donna and Jim C at Tim's barn on Sunday),I go within to see where I am - how I'm doing emotionally. I know Tuesday is going to be very emotional on the board and I am thankful everybody can come here for release, for self-examination and for the support of this wonderful famblee.

And I'm not sad. I thought I would be, but I'm not. The rawness of the grief is gone- transformed if you will. All that is left is peace - peace of mind, peace of soul, peace of knowing that I am going to set out on my spiritual journey in ways I had never expected...and part of the guiding is coming not only from my spiritual teachers and my ever-opening heart, but from Barbaro and all the horses who watch over us.

May we all find that peace - both inner and outer. That is my wish for all of you.

Wow Its great to see so frens again.

This was a really lousy weekend last year and we got through it together. Do you remember me telling you the story last year that when we were all gathered together and scared on that Sunday afternoon, I was sitting in my darkened office. The shades were drawn and I felt sad. About 4 o'clock in the afternoon (almost sunset here) a singe ray of sunlight managed to peek its way through my window blinds, shine through a cut crystal cross statue, and burst a rainbow of colors directly onto my Barbaro Beanie on the bookshelf. My big Chocolate Lab came into the room and rested his head on my leg and looked at me as if to say, " I know you are sad, but he'll be ok"
It was really at that moment that I knew.....and I knew that I should try to accept what was about to happen.

The next several days were horrible, panic stricken, and devastating. I dont think I spoke a word for at least 48 hours. I wanted to fade away and never get hurt like that again..I am sure we all did.

But we knew that we could not turn our backs on his Legacy. We struggled to make sense of this and then it became clear to us that through the pain, we had to carry on. And Carry on we did. In a BIG WAY!!

    So many horses saved
    So much awareness raised
So much money put into the correct hands
So much love and support to one another
So many wonderful friends from across the world.

But still so much to do.......

AS we carry forward through these next days of rememberence, we have to remind ourselves that in the pain, there has been good. That is greatest living tribute that we can give to Barbaro and his all his frens. He taught us, as WE LEARNED. I am so inspired and proud of each and every one of you.

I've really been in a "pre January 29th funk" but there is nowhere else I plan to be on Tuesday...

It seems like forever, and yet it seems like yesterday since ACN had a different meaning than ALWAYS COMFORTABLE NOW, especially when I look at all the pictures of Barbaro that grace my apartment with his image of strength and power and beauty. But we all need to take comfort from the fact that he fought the good fight, he formed our community to "complete his unfinished tasks" and we are still hard at it...and that indeed Barbaro IS always comfortable now.

Love to famblee who "get it" and who never give up!

none of the Village denizens will be strolling briskly back from Kiefers with their newspapers du jour. These old cranks NEVER wave back!

I mean what could be sillier looking than me on a winter's morn lugging a #50 bag of food...a little red headed woman at age ahem ahem (as Joe says) wearing red half-specs to complete the ensemble.

Barbaro Left Legacy That Stretches Far Beyond Kentucky Derby Victory

    Associated Press
    Updated: January 24, 2008, 5:19 PM EST

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. (AP) - The white wooden fence once tacked with homemade signs expressing prayers and appeals to "Grow, Hoof, Grow" are bare. Only students pass through the lobby that overflowed with floral arrangements, get-well cards and baskets stuffed with carrots and apples.

The sole visual evidence at the New Bolton Center that the large animal hospital was ever Barbaro's intensive care home for eight months is a portrait of the bay colt blazing toward the finish line in his stirring 6 1/2-length victory in the 2006 Kentucky Derby.

It's the way Barbaro should be honored.

The breathtaking stride that swiftly covered grass or dirt and those Triple Crown dreams lofted by the widest Derby margin in 60 years are what those close to Barbaro remember now.

"Sometimes," said Gretchen Jackson, Barbaro's co-owner, "I can still see him."

If Barbaro's near-flawless career made him one of racing's greats, it was the feisty fight for his life from his horrific breakdown at the Preakness that morphed the colt into a symbol of courage, strength and inspiration all around the world. What few might have guessed when Barbaro was rushed from Pimlico Race Course to the sprawling, 650-acre campus in Kennett Square was how he would create a legacy that perhaps not even a Triple Crown would have brought him.

So on Tuesday, one year from the day Barbaro was euthanized after complications from his gruesome breakdown, his most devoted fans will hit Internet message boards to leave notes "for Barbaro" and observe a moment of silence. Perhaps then, the Fans of Barbaro - or, FOBs - can also take solace and pride in all they've done in Barbaro's name for equine awareness and horse protection. Their tireless efforts might be the greatest tribute of all.

"I think it's just great that everything came out in a positive force with Barbaro and it still continues," Jackson said. "People just did their best. He had that effect on people."

Jackson and her husband, Roy, are reminded daily how Barbaro touched everyone from the fanatical Triple Crown followers to those who paid scant attention to the sport until they heard of the colt's plight. That's one reason why the Jacksons are still carefully and respectfully considering where to bring the ashes of their beloved colt.

Barbaro's ashes remain with the Jacksons, and Gretchen Jackson said they are still trying to decide the best way to honor the Derby winner. Jackson hasn't given up the idea of a museum, but plans now likely call for his final resting place to be near a yet-to-be built statue.

"I'd like to see it where he can be visited by people who can pay respects to his remains," Gretchen Jackson said. "I think we'd like to respect that."

The Jacksons are still reviewing proposals for a statue and could decide where it will go within the next few weeks.

It could be the Kentucky Derby Museum, just a few hundred yards from the scene of his greatest triumph in the 2006 Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

"I'm one of those people where the ashes mean nothing to me compared to the memory of the horse," said Dr. Dean Richardson, chief of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center.

Outside of the Jacksons, no one was as emotionally connected with Barbaro as Richardson. Even as weeks of positive updates turned into months, it was Richardson who cautioned an optimistic public that laminitis, the often-fatal hoof disease, could cost Barbaro his life.

In the end, a series of ailments - including laminitis in the left rear hoof, an abscess in the right rear hoof, as well as new laminitis in both front feet - proved too much for Barbaro.

Now, additional help to battle the dire disease can be found at New Bolton thanks to the financial generosity of the Jacksons, the FOBs and others simply wanting to help, just another way that shows Barbaro's legacy stretched far beyond a convincing Kentucky Derby victory.

The Barbaro Fund at New Bolton has raised more than $1.3 million and counting, with the money put toward both needed expansion of the George D. Widener Large Animal Hospital, and the purchase of equipment like a new operating table and recovery raft, not unlike the one used to calmly awake Barbaro from the anesthetic.

More than $2.7 million has been raised with a separate fund for laminitis research, and last year Dr. Hannah Galantino-Homer was appointed as lead investigator of the newly created laminitis research initiative.

The laminitis initiative will foster training programs and studies for new treatments of equine diseases.

"It isn't so much the amount, it's the continued interest," Richardson said of the support.

The Jacksons also created a $3 million endowment named for Richardson at the University of Pennsylvania's veterinary school to study equine diseases.

The FOBs, strangers stretched across the country with a common bond, have tried to pass legislation that would save horses from slaughter. The Barbaro devotees have raised more than $800,000 and saved more 1,950 horses from slaughter. On the 29th of each month, the date of Barbaro's death, fans are encouraged to donate $29 and the moneys raised goes toward New Bolton's laminitis fund.

The FOBs will present New Bolton with a check for the fund on Monday.

Saving horses from slaughter is their primary goal on www.alexbrownracing.com.

"Every time someone comes on the (Internet) forum, we somehow manage to raise the money and get the horse," said FOB Sharon Crumb, who helped organize a Barbaro birthday celebration last April.

Crumb also started a project called "Spread the Warmth," which collects blankets and donates them to rescued horses.

And it was an FOB who told Gretchen Jackson shortly after Barbaro died that, "Grief is the price we all pay for love," a quote that symbolized the heartache they all felt that sorrowful day.

"I thought that it was so wonderful that I'm going to hang on to that," Jackson said. "That's how it came out of my mouth."

There's hope yet the Jacksons could still experience the same exhilaration that Barbaro brought them. The Jacksons, who have been in the business for 30-plus years, still own about 70 horses and nearly 20 are racing. Barbaro has two full brothers, a 2-year-old named Nicanor and an unnamed yearling. Nicanor trains in Florida and the yearling is in Lexington, Ky.

Gretchen Jackson plans to visit Nicanor soon for an update on his progress.

"Nobody's going to say he's going to be a star, but he's doing everything OK," she said. "He's certainly a great horse to look at."

Jackson, who serves on the Penn Vet Board of Overseers, still makes the short drive from her farm down the road to visit New Bolton. Her daughter-in-law is a veterinarian there, so instead of stopping by to watch Barbaro gobble treats, she's "dropping off clothing for granddaughters."

Each time Jackson walks in, maybe glances at the portrait across from the check-in desk, it's impossible not to think of the gallant colt who took so many on the ride of a lifetime.

"You can be back there pretty fast," she said. "It's amazing."

OK so here we are: back in the dog-chewed slippers, drinking first coffee du jour. Bo is warbling in his crate. This can escalate to full blown barking at any moment. grrrrr..

    OK

Everyone has gone back out to Do What They Didn't Do earlier. And they are FAST these retired racers. They learn that at the track kennels. DO IT NOW OR WAIT.

And then they settle around the house in beautiful blacks (2), white & brindles(3), brindles, (3)
the lurchers (2)(red/wheaten), a red, a fawn, and a blue. OK, is that 13? OK.

If it wasn't for the calls to be made, this condition of looking at sleeping gh usually has a narcotic effect and I can fall asleep just looking at them...

Much to do, mountains to shove around.

PS: a dragged my weary ahem through an over the phone survey 2 nights ago. It took forever. But the jist of the complex survey about current candidates for preseedent was a survey on the performance on our congressman, James Walsh. \\He won by a teeny, tiny margin last year...and guess what?! The mother is retiring!~!!!!!

Of course, I personally feel that my responses to querries about his performan for his own area of
NY were responsible for him throwing in the towel...
("Oh my God," Congressman Walsh mumbled in his chocked voice. "If that's how Jonna feels," he sobbed, "I guess retirement is the only option left to us....")

I have such a rich fantasy life.....

    Upstate Congressman Won’t Seek Re-election

    By Raymond Hernandez
WalshJames T. Walsh has represented the Syracuse region since 1989.

Representative James T. Walsh, a New York Republican who has represented the Syracuse region for nearly two decades, does not intend to pursue re-election and plans to retire from Congress at the end of his term in January 2009, according to political operatives familiar with the decision.

“It’s time to go,” Mr. Walsh said in an interview that The Post-Standard of Syracuse published on its Web site. Mr. Walsh intends to formally announce his decision later today at a news conference in Syracuse, according to wire services.

Mr. Walsh barely won re-election in 2006, narrowly defeating a Democratic challenger, Dan Maffei, by a margin of 51 percent to 49 percent. Mr. Maffei, a former congressional aide, has already announced plans to run again this year.

Mr. Walsh’s decision caught both Republicans and Democrats by surprise; he had been preparing to run a vigorous race for an 11th term. His decision underscores the difficult political climate Republicans face this year, particularly those in heavily Democratic New York. Mr. Walsh’s decision is the latest in a series of Republican retirements in the House that will make it harder for the party to recapture control of the chamber in the November election.

Mr. Walsh, 60, is a native of Syracuse. His father, William F. Walsh, represented the area in Congress for three terms, from 1973 to 1979.

The younger Mr. Walsh graduated from St. Bonaventure University in 1970, served in the Peace Corps from 1970 to 1972 and then went into private business. He served on the Syracuse Common Council from 1977 to 1985 and was its president from 1985 to 1988, when he won election to the House.

During the 12 years that Republicans controlled the House, from 1995 until 2007, moderate Republicans were often the stepchildren of their party, expected to vote with their conservative leadership on crucial issues, even if it meant taking positions that could anger centrist voters back home. In 2006, the Democrats made some of their deepest inroads in the Northeast. A total of 10 Republican incumbents in the House were defeated in four states — New Hampshire, Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania — where the challengers aggressively tried to tie the incumbents to President Bush and his conservative allies on Capitol Hill.

An article published in The New York Times last July noted that Mr. Walsh had been raising money feverishly and making campaign-style appearances across his district. Many New York Republicans worry there will be a huge Democratic turnout in the state this November, particularly if Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is leading the national ticket.

The 25th Congressional District, which Mr. Walsh represents, stretches from the Syracuse area in central New York westward along Lake Ontario to the northeastern suburbs of Rochester. The district includes parts of Monroe, Wayne, Cayuga and Onondaga Counties.

###It is POURING here in the High Desert. Has rained hard. ALL. NIGHT. LONG.

My much anticipated riding lessons for this weekend are canceled--not only am I not hauling myself and "Hizzoner" anywhere in this mess, I am not going to RIDE in it (because it's also raining down the hill where the lessons are to take place, in an open dressage court). I'd also have to PAY for that privilege.

    Not today. Sorry.

I struggled out to the curb with the garbage can and the power went out--this was at 5:30. The power is STILL out. I had to do the superwoman thing with the automatic garage door, snapping the silver gizmo out of the black dohickey so I could close the door by hand. (Sorry for resorting to technical garage door talk).

There are times when being dependent on ANY kind of energy is a big bummer, believe me ;o)

The power is still out nearly two hours later. Thank goodness for full batteries on the laptop and being able to find the flashlight. And for gas logs in the fireplace and gas stoves that light from matches (since the pilot light seems to be electric).

###Again, remember our focus on Tuesday should be remembering Barbaro with fondness and love--and celebrating the JOY of having known of him for a few short months. Celebrate his life, celebrate the accomplishments you all have made in his name and in his honor, and focus forward on doing good works in his name and honor for countless animals that csnnot speak for (or help) themselves.

###You all have accomplished SO MUCH in a very short time, and it is because of the wonderful and priceless generosity of Tim and Alex and the time and energy expended by Alex and his happy band of bloggers and others who have stepped in from time to time that we have been able to meet here and share our anger, hopes, and our tears and joys.

###That Associated Press article is WONDERFUL. It is obviously written by someone who "gets it."

###I am proud that I have been permitted to post now and then. I am not on "the front lines" as many of you are, but I am doing my part where and when I can.

I am proud to "know" you all.

Mary S. I send thanks for the article as well! I'll go back and 'really' read it later today when time is more on my side...I just 'skimmed' this morning.

Leslie, MN: I remember that post very well...the sunlight coming through that little opening in the blinds in your dark room....that was a difficult day. I was so scared...like hanging on by my 'fingernails'...that is the best way I can describe how I felt...it was such a difficult day...and the candles we all lit that night, wasn't that the night there were over 20K candles glowing from something like over 40 countries?? I remember thinking the next day, his way to Hevvin was quite well lit!

I didn't post here then....I was just a 'lurker'...but I was here with everyone of you, my Famblee in Barbaro. Gosh! Just writing here this morning, feeling those 'feelings' again brings home to me just how difficult Tuesday will be for me:( I have to 'fight' the tears this morning! I still miss him terribly, just like 'yole'...and then I think of *MISTER* and his dear Sister, Rosie:) And a smile happens on this face...and the tears are NOT staying put!! Dammit!! But I'm still ever grateful for that Big Bay Horse named, bArbaro finding his way into my heart....'cause in the end, even this horrid hurt I am feeling is still well worth the journey:)

So, I need to zoom....must go out into the world, but I'll still be 'here' in my heart...and will be checking in later on today when home again!

Everyone, have a good day today!!

Mary S- thanks so much for posting the AP article, it doesn't seem possible that's it's almost a year since we lost Barbaro.

Update: Fundraising effort for Kentucky Equine Humane Center:
I have 6 pledges so far. Thank you to those individuals. If interested my e-mail is jbryan@bhsi.com

This is a fund raising effort so that there can be an FOB sponsored class in the First Annual All Breeds horse show. The horse show is a fundraising event for the Kentucky Equine Humane Center (KyEHC).

We need $250.00 total to sponsor one class. This will be a great way to support a great rescue organization as well as get the FOB's name in the public domain. If more than $250.00 is raised, it will go to the sponsorship of a second class or will be given directly to KyEHC.

If you are interested in supporting this effort please send me a check (as I don't have any electronic means of accepting donations). You may e-mail me (jbryan@bhsi.com) privately with your pledge and I will send you the mailing information. I will maintain a list of contributors and post updates once a week. The deadline for donations will be March 1, 2008.

Skyler reposting for Daryl. He will go talk to Sen Nelson, you just need to arrange a meeting.
He is going for Alabama with Sessions. Anyone need help, Daryl is the man!

I'm returning to Washington DC for more meetings and lobbying for S. 311 and H.R. 503. My previous meetings have provided great insight as to what needs to be done, what needs to be presented to individual Senate and House offices. Each meeting presents exactly where that lawmaker is in the process of his/her decision making. If your senator or house rep is not yet a co-sponsor and you would like me to meet with his/her staff here's the formula:

    1. Contact me via my e-mail shanamrdiv@yahoo.com

    2. Then we will contact your senator/rep office.

    3. After each meeting I forward you the results and we strategize based on the information that emerges from the meeting.

    3. These meetings are valuable also in that they produce proper contacts and allow us to cultivate relationships. And relationships sell!

    These are the dates I will be available for meetings: Februrary 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13.

Robert & Stephanie Pierce, the angels of Miracle Horse Rescue are facing a difficult challenge. Irma, Robert's mother has been diagnosed with Cancer and suffered a stroke. She will be going to live with them next week, probably for whatever time she has left and Steph & Rob will be her primary caregivers. My dear, dear fren Stephanie asks for nothing other than we continue to support the horses. As most of you know there is a monthly Hay Drive with great prizes going to the winner. Please support the MHR Hay Drive and buy a few tickets. This month it's all about Barbaro and if I'm not mistaken, Mr. Boxcar will be drawing the winner.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to their two 2007 antislaughter releases and their recently-released Jan. 2008 WHITE PAPER are in the Thread noted below.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

    800-828-0498

    800-459-1887

    800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE NEW SUGGESTION/ CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE Prior HS History above the LIST OF LEGISLATORS below.)

    1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January 07], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

    2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

    3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

    4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

    5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

    Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Friday 1/25/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S311; ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

Prior HS History: These Senators voted for the Ensign-Byrd Amendment in 2005 but have not yet cosponsored the bill.

Jonna, the visual of you in the red outfit, complete with red specs, out in the snow, just about sent me over the edge. For some reason it just really tickled me. Thanks for that, I needed it badly.

There is just so much sadness right now...Joe's blog yesterday really touched me. He and Cathy are such angels, I don't know how they do it every day. And its getting closer to the 29th. Hopefully we will all feel more peaceful after that as we continue to work toward the goal.

Rather than make myself nuts all over again, I would simply direct your attention to an article posted on
http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=43312 . While I love horses, I don't believe they are people in horse suits, nor are they human-like. They are horses, with a dignity and special air all their own. And BECAUSE they really are unique creatures, we love them. We can evaluate OUR humanity by the way we treat our animals, and this "artist" and his sponsor are proving they have all the soul of sea slugs.........NOPE....that's an insult to sea slugs. I won't call this crack-pot an artist, but I will say he is taking a VERY CHEAP SHOT at the Jackson's, who deserve nothing but our thanks for trying to save their horse! They COULD have collected the insurance by putting Barbaro down right in front of the starting gate, but they chose to do the RIGHT thing by trying to save him. What this person and his sponsor are doing is tacky, crass and cruel to some truly extraordinary people.......and I daresay, their "memorial" will scare the ever-loving crap out of any little kid that sees it.

IS ANYONE ELSE AS P O'D AS I AM ABOUT THIS??

Just had to rant.......sorry ..........and I hope everyone has a fine weekend.

I think the candle site has problems ever since they set the limits for lighting candles. We are "allowed" 24 candles/day, 100/week. Just a suggestion, but I think we ought to start lighting for B on Sunday or so? We can't light the way we have been lighting.

Also, if you light very slowly (I count to 8 in between each step), the candles seem to be counted each time. If I go fast, they don't register. I realize it is their site, but this is just frustrating right now. Their webmaster is on vaction until the 1st - too late to do anything by the 29th.......

    All,

I have to share with you a letter that was in our "Bridle and Bit" magazine here in Arizona. (Thanks, Rosemary !):

    Letter to the Editor
    By Jim Gath
    Jan 25, 2008, 10:34

    Email this article
    Printer friendly page
This letter was sent to the American Horse Council On January 11, 2008.
The AHC is supposedly the chief lobbyist for the equine industry........

    American Horse Council:

Hello. My name is Jim Gath & I run Tierra Madre Horse Sanctuary in Cave
Creek, AZ. We're home to over two dozen previously unwanted horses:
    ex-racehorses, ex-show horses, ex-ranch horses, ex-rodeo horses - the
    gamut.

I - like yourselves - have been pretty non-committal on the subject of
horse slaughter. Not because I agree with the slaughter of horses - it has to
end - but because the industry has done NOTHING to prepare for the
inevitable wave of additional unwanted horses once the bills in Congress become laws. I know in my heart that many of these horses will face a fate far worse than death. The simple act of closing the 3 horse slaughterhouses in this country has added immeasurably to the suffering of hundreds of thousands of horses now shipped to Mexico or Canada. Once it becomes illegal to ship horses out of the country for slaughter purposes, what will happen to those unwanted horses?

I've contacted dozens of equine organizations & animal rights groups to inquire as to what plans are in place or being developed to deal with this
upcoming crisis. You know what I've found? Nothing is being done. Nothing.

The Humane Society is so clueless, it maintains that people will stop breeding so many horses. Bullsquat. People breed horses to make money & that ain't gonna stop. Greed always trumps good in this society.

Are you - as chief lobbyist for the equine industry - actively seeking government funding to support existing sanctuaries & rescues to enable us to expand our facilities to accommodate more unwanted horses & to care for them properly? Are you looking for out-of-the-box solutions, such as setting aside federal lands to house herds? Are you looking at subsidizing ranchers to take in unwanted horses on their unused land? What are you doing about the problem that is staring us in the face?

My facility is full to the gills right now. Yet every day, I get calls to take in more horses. And if I'm getting calls, I'd bet every other sanctuary & rescue in the country is getting calls every day. This is a crisis RIGHT NOW, my friends. What happens once it is no longer legal to ship horses out of the country for slaughter, it will be an unmitigated catastrophe.

What are you doing about it?

Here, where the hooves meet the dirt, we need help now. Financial help. The
cost of feed is going through the roof. Herds of horses are literally dying
to come here to live. And yet, the equine industry skips along, whistling its happy tune. While hundreds of thousands of horses may never hear a happy
    tune again.

As soon as I read it, I called the guy !

Well, he is NOT pro slaughter. In fact, he is very much on our side, but I think he brought up some valid points. His horse sanctuary is full and he, like Joe of TB Friends, is ALWAYS getting calls, each and every day. We need to put on our thinking caps to help out these rescues EVERYWHERE !

    Barb
I understand his concern because we all know that the rescues are full. Stephanie, at MHR always seems to find room for 1 more. It goes back to the debate about saving as many horses as we can but who is paying to feed them. Do we bankrupt these equine angels and drive them out of business or do we support them?

Maybe I'm too simplistic or idealistic but to me the solutions are right in front of us.
    1) yes, quit breeding for the sake of getting a cute baby unless you are prepared to support it for life.
    2) the breed registrations encourage breeding for the registration fees.....STOP! You end up breeding for slaughter.
3)Humane Euthanasia by injection. C'mon, we all know that the cost is very close to 1 month's board. There are a lot of farmer/ranchers crying poor and driving cadillacs.
4)We all know about the "unwanted horse" theory. We all know that a significant number of horses going to slaughter were not unwanted. They were stolen or sold to KBs under false pretense.

Somehow we need to find our humanity again.

    Greetings,

Paul Sorvino speaking. I won't be posting again soon since I'm recovering from pneumonia and recently fell down the stairs and hurt my leg.

I'm not really very savvy on the Internet, so this post will be a one-time gig for me. I wanted to start out by thanking Alex Brown for creating and moderating a forum that unites Barbaro enthusiasts for the common goal of saving slaughter-bound, abused, and neglected horses. It's a terrific idea, and it's obviously working. Take a look at all the horses you FOBs have been saving! There's an energy on this forum that is catching. From post to post, horses jump over the rails of safety. It's really amazing to look at these posts from the beginning of a thread and then jump to the end, when, yes, the mission is accomplished and more horses have been given the golden ticket ... out of the slaughterhouse.

We just welcomed a new edition to our ranch and we've named him Silver Snow. And yes, he was one of the lucky group sprung from this past Monday's kill pen at New Holland. It all began when Kelly Young called my daughter, Amanda, and said, "The sale is over but I should drive back there. There was a pen full of great horses that I can't forget about." Moments later, Kelly turned around and headed back to New Holland. Amanda made good time in calling the inspired and impassioned ambassador of Barbaro, Sharon Crumb, who expediently posted Amanda's vivid descriptions of Kelly's heartfelt and tragic "walk through the kill pen." A lucky group of horses was mentioned on the board. Within minutes, and then perhaps seconds, donations were rounding up and horses stepping closer to a reprieve from death's door.

FOBs helped in whatever way they could, whether through donations, home and foster offers, or connecting the board with others who could help. Kelly was most generous to front the bail for horses who seemed to have generated considerable interest. And then there was the gray horse ... where it was and which gender it belonged to were a mystery at some point in time.

As the mystery unraveled more players fell into the picture, helping as best they could. Even a John Wayne look-alike "good old boy" was crucial in locating the whereabouts of this gray mystery horse. He made some phone calls and attempted to secure the horse for Amanda, while my faithful friend Lucille Matte helped Amanda to contact Christy Sheidy so that the adoption of this unforgettable gray gelding with the prominent knee could be completed.

Sheidy went above and beyond the call of duty, making phone calls to the dealer and hauling the horse in spite of car troubles the next morning to her house, where she met up with Amanda and hauler, Linda. After Silver Snow was settled in the back of Linda's truck and they were homeward-bound, Amanda knew why the acclaimed robotics engineer and writer John Holland always spoke so highly of Christy. It was a happy, pleasant, and awe-inspiring day. But day quickly turned to night as a cold chill swept away the last remnants of hay on the snowy hill. The smokey sky loomed over 3 fields of ex-racehorses. It was time for these retired fellas to trot back to the main barn for dinner.

A big tall horse with dirty gray dapples limped stoically by their stalls and headed out to the second field, where he would live in the shed row stall barn on top of a rolling hill with 2 other equines who escaped the same fate just weeks before. The stall was clean and full of fluffy shavings and hay, 2 buckets of water, a hanging likit treat, and a toy ball. Amanda threw a brand new golden blanket over his back, donated by dear friend and rescue mentor, Jo Deibel.

Today Silver Snow set out for the first time on the happy acres of his new life. He's come a long way since his days in VA. He is thankful as I am to all the FOBs who paypal-ed his bail back to Kelly and all the folks who cared about him along the way.

Bev Strauss graciously reviewed a photo of his knee and believes that he will be a pasture pet for the remainder of his days. The vet will be out this coming week to perform x-rays just to be sure, but we wanted to thank Mrs. Strauss for her time and highly valued opinion.

I bid you all goodnight after my short story of the gray dapple horse in the golden blanket -- a blanket of dreams for tomorrow's slaughter-bound horses. Through the magic of human compassion, these hallowed horses found their way out of the kill pen.

Thank You, FOBs, for pulling together a victorious save in a matter of minutes. These horses had nothing if they did not have you.

    All the Best,

    Paul Sorvino

Missing and loving you sweet boy and still missing Alex's "Barbaro" updates.

Jonna, First of all to address your comment about the "ONE" horse that the Sorvino's saved. You have NO idea how many horses they have saved or how many rescue horses they have. NO idea.

Mr. Sorvino has our letters all 229 of them (after going through them and removing ones that sounded like PETA etc). He had 2 meetings with producers a couple of weeks prior to Christmas that had nothing to do with horses whatsoever. However he presented the letters and pitch to producers on doing a show on horse slaughter. He felt it was received well.

Then Christmas and New Years popped up. Did you know that most of these producers take the 2 weeks prior and the 2 weeks following off? Now you do.

Mr. Sorvino has been ill with a pneumonia. Did you know that a pneumonia is quite serious? Now you do.

Mr. Sorvino never agreed to do anything for "us" or you. Anything he does is for the horses and ONLY for the horses.

I don't know how much more disrespectful you could be.

As for the rest of the FOB'S Mr. Sorvino is feeling better but with a pneumonia (he has had a pneumonia before) you have to be very careful. I am sure everyone is familiar with what a pneumonia can do to ones lungs but if not please google it. Please continue to be patient and hang in there. I have every confidence that Mr. Sorvino will come through for the horses.

Thank you to all of you who gave me a "Welcome Back" - I truly appreciate your kindness.

I stay away not because I don't care, but because it just hurts so much....

When I became too sick to work last summer I couldn't even afford to support "my" horses. That was hard to deal with. My contributions were never large and only involved a couple rescues, but it had made me feel good to be able to help even if only in a small way .....

I'm feeling better these days and I am back to working fairly regularly now, so last week I "rewarded" myself by resuming support of one of "my" horses, my wild mustang, Half Moon at MHR. It feels good - even though it's still so little .....

The needs are so great. I guess we just all have to do what we can to help. Together we can make a difference, can't we? The past year has proven that.

Let's help each other get through next week ..... it will be hard and it will hurt, but we are never alone as long as we are FOBs.

I have missed you, my FOB friends.

    Mary:
I am glad that you are full of faith in the Hollywood procedure. I have none. And I'm sorry Sorvino is ill--i said as much.

Mary we need people with money and influence. we need people who can act fast. We need people who can enlist the help of their friends with similar interests, and Lucille: Joe has over 100 horses, what's the point.

Who is Sorvino telling about the evils of slaughter? How is his knowledge of these evils being put to work with politicians?

I am sure he is a wonderful person. But I think we need a pitbull at this point. Horses are dying, Right now in BC, probably. If you can live with that, just take it for granted and go on (and I know you cannot) then let's just stay around and see what will happen in the next 2-3 months while
    this nice man feels better.

We have to move faster, or move on to the next candidate. We are the only voices of the horse. and I am very sorry that we're still at thew wait and see stage as the 29th approaches.

With great power comes great responsibility/look at the Gates', Oprah, Ellen DeGeneres, Sandra Bullock who had $1,000,000 down to the Tsunai victims weeks before any other celebs showed up....

I'm not a very patient person, and everytime one of our horses dies, I die a little. It's time for action. We need to figure out to tap into these celebrities whom we know are against horse slaughter...I have a list. I'll be happy to share.

You're done a great job, but these film and sports and music people are really just people. Can they do what we need them to do? If not, thanks so much, bye bye. We'll be in touch when you're well..

Posted by: jonna at January 26, 2008 12:36 AM

    L. Matte, thank you for your post. I could not believe the rudeness when I read it.

I'd think the last thing anyone should want to do when trying to stop horse slaughter would be to alienate good-hearted people, whether they're celebrities or not.

I have not been regularly on here in almost a year - I lost heart after Barbaro passed. I came over in preparation for the 29th. As a non-regular, I apologize for weighing in on this, but I couldn't believe what I was reading.

yes, i have unfortunately intimate knowledge of repeat pneumonias......and, your point is? This man doesn't have an army of assistants? Why can't things move forward while he's recuperating?

Posted by: jonna at January 26, 2008 12:40 AM

###jonna - I think you might consider calming down and thinking about what you are saying. I agree we need people with money and influence. Things are happening in the background - and we don't necessarily know what they are - doesn't mean that things are not being worked on. Lucille has told you what is going on with Mr. Sorvino. I don't think being rude, and/or alienating people gets anyone very far. We are all very passionate about this issue - you are not the only one..... and each person does their own work in their own way. God and Barbaro know what is being done...... that is good enough for me. I am sorry you are so obviously upset at things going slower than you want. If you have a list, I suggest you start calling - but I would ask you dial it back a notch before you do. We all would like this to have been stopped years ago. We all would like B back with us. We can only do what we can do jonna. Browbeating is not going to serve anyone - you included.

Lucille also has intimate knowledge of pneumonia - her mother passed away from pneumonia.

    Hello Barbaro,

I cannot access this site from work but I had a feeling that there was some added warmth here today...I was right.

Fans and friends that haven’t posted in a while were here...at home.

It feels like a family holiday or event. People "flying" in from miles away and arriving at the doorstep, awaiting the warm welcome that is sure to greet them.

As with any family member that I haven’t seen for awhile, when I read the names, I thought to myself, "It’s SO good to see you!", "Thank Heaven’s you’re here!" "I've been SO worried about you"...to "I have missed you SO much friend."

They are here for you Honey. We are ALL here for you.

And Honey, when family is in town, we make room for them to stay. Your Heaven’s will need to open up and turn more beds down tonight than usual. Yes Honey, I think your Famblee would love mints left on their pillows! Okay, they can be spearmints...

Before you grab your blanket, would you please pull your Famblee’s beautiful blankets, handmade afghans and vintage quilts down from the top branch of your favorite apple tree? Yes Honey, the same ones that your Fans held and gave to you those last Earthly moments while standing by your side and spending the nights with you...

We will all gather in the middle ground of your Heavenly Racetrack. Once there, we will throw our covers into the wind so they unfold and create a sea of divine beauty that exudes love and warmth. And in the center of this union, there...you will be.

We will pull your cashmere blanket up high on your neck and fluff the folds perfectly for nuzzling. Yes Honey, the sage green cashmere blanket will be yours again...Until you tell Harriette that it is time once again for me to have it...in times when I need it most.

Dream your sweet dreams tonight Honey. You are truly surrounded by love and warmth, care and compassion.

Your Dream Angels are sooo busy popping popcorn for your Fans, filling glasses with various beverages, brushing each others hair, sharing photos of you and sharing their favorite Heavenly times that they have had with you. They have quite a captive audience Honey.

And it is here that your Famblee will see, your healing is complete and strength will forever carry you through your days and into the sweet dreams of your loved ones.

We love you Honey. We are here. Sweet dreams to you and enjoy the many kisses and hugs for you tonight. I'm in love with you Honey. Good night. XXOOxxoxo

Lucille/Mary: I wrote at least one letter to sorvino. hundreds of us did. You saw them all.

I will just wind this up by saying that i found it very interesting that Sorvino mentioned nothing about what he was working on with the horse rescue project, looking forward to the next steps, etc...

We all do what we can. Bless us, everyone. We lost our bay colt. We learned about a world more evil, more crass, more heinous than anything we had ever imagined. horse slaughter, nursemare foals, PMU foals, rodeo horrors, horse tripping. did i leave anything out?

I look these things straight in the face. I want to know what I am fighting. And fight I will.

Yes, you bet I'm impatient. Yes, I'll push for HR Europe to have their place with us. If it means I have to go off board for a while, well then, fine. yes, I'm impatient. I'll go silent.

How we each deal with this is very personal. And personally, it breaks my heart. Everyday. I dream about horses every night. Last night I dreamed the bay colt in the rodeo with two broken legs who was being dragged out of the ring by a bunch of "men."
Not even the relief for him of being put down on the spot. How is this humanity. How long, exactly, should I WAIT until THAT changes?

I will be here on the 29th with my rose too. But I'll have it in my teeth. I think Barbaro would like that.

Goodnight my sisters: we will prevail.

The amount of information that can be posted on a message board about contractual negotiations with major network television is limited. Detailed information can not be discussed on a message board at this time.

The Martha Stewart show never aired on Comcast cable television here in Houston. I have taped every single Martha Stewart show from the day it aired and that particular show has never been shown on Comcast cable? Think about it.

    Hi everyone,
I have never posted before but have been checking in with this website regularly since coming here Jan. 29th, desperate for information on Barbaro's condition. Prior to Barbaro's injury I did not follow horse racing, and I had never even been near a horse. Barbaro gave me the courage not only to step inside a pasture, but I even went horseback riding! He taught me about compassion for others, and the strength he demonstrated still amazes me. I enjoy reading all your posts and you have all been a tremendous help to me this past year. Thank you.

Hiya, FsOB, & TGIF! I am so grateful to all of you who've supported the nomination of Mayor Paula Bacon for a Profiles in Courage Award. The portfolio will be heading to Cambridge next Tuesday. It'll have the names & contact info for numerous representatives of animal welfare organizations and advocacy groups, as well as "everyday people" from Kaufman, TX. My thanks to all the FsOB who've sent a letter of support for inclusion in this portfolio. Wishing each of you comfortable slumbers tonight. To Harriette: Yikes, six degrees Fahrenheit in Central KY! What happened to global warming?
To Mary S: Thank you for posting the AP article about Barbaro and the Jacksons' perspectives one year later.
To Joanne Frank: Yes, we all need to keep Erin Brennan in our thoughts. She only had ~ 35 candles a little while ago and most of the ones which are lit are almost extinguished.
To Laurie H: Loved your tuck-in tonight, I really needed it.
To Jonna: I am sitting in my faded fuschia-coloureed oversized bathrobe, which Brent refers to as "the pink blob". And my reading glasses are a metallic light pink. Scary, or what?
To Judith Stock: Yes, lots of folks here are upset about the statue in Central Park, too. Nancy wants to demonstrate there on 04/29. Unfortunately, I have to work that day. Otherwise I'd probably be right alongside Nancy in the Park.
To Debbie LA: Thank you for posting the note from Mr. Sorvino about Silver Snow. I hope that PS's pneumonia resolves quickly.
To Lucille: I am grateful for Mr. Sorvino's endorsement of Mayor Bacon's award nomination and I thank you for your help once more.

Welcoming Paul Sorvino and Toby Keith to our most worthy cause.

Every day, more people learn about the horrors of horse slaughter. Every day, more people speak out. Every day, more horses are raised.

Like any war, it's a day-by-day process to achieve the goal. Skirmish by skirmish, battle by battle.

    *****
This has been posted before, but it seems like a good time to post it again:

    The Starfish

The old man awoke just before sunrise, as he often did, to walk by the ocean's edge and greet the new day. As he moved through the morning dawn, he focused on a faint, far away motion.

He saw a youth, bending and reaching and flailing arms, dancing on the beach, no doubt in celebration of the perfect day soon to begin. As he approached, he realized that the youth was not dancing to the bay, but rather bending to sift through the debris left by the night's tide, stopping now and then to pick up starfish and then standing, to heave it back into the sea.

He asked the youth the purpose of the effort. "The tide has washed the starfish onto the beach and they cannot return to the sea by themselves," the youth replied. "When the sun rises, they will die, unless I throw them back into the sea."

As the youth explained, the old man surveyed the vast expanse of beach, stretching in both directions beyond eyesight. Starfish littered the shore in numbers beyond calculation.

The hopelessness of the youth's plan became clear and the old man countered, "But there are more starfish on this beach than you can ever save before the sun is up. Surely you cannot expect to make a difference."

The youth paused briefly to consider my words, bent to pick up a starfish and threw it as far as possible. Turning to the man, he said,

"I made a difference to that one."

To my wonderful FOB famblee - thank you so much for your kind words, thoughts and prayers for my surgery this week. I came home this morning and got to read so much love and concern, that it made me tear up. You are all wonderful caring people.

Altho I had problems with the anesthesia that lasted 2 days, I eventually started feeling better and was more than ready to come home today. The tumor was related to the original cancer from October 2006 and as nothing else has ever lit up, the oncologist considers this a done deal. We will continue the 3 month checkups, but he expects this is the end of the cancer. I have to believe him.

To all of you I say thank you for your continued prayers and support. I don't know how I could have dealt with the first one or this one without knowing how much you all care.

    I lub you all!

"Dear God, please make your Will and Plan known and done for "The Horse".

He has been a mighty companion throughout the centuries,

and deserves praise and respect as well as loving care.

We realize, as man, we have been given the stewardship of the earth,

and we need your divine help in order to take care of it properly.

We pray that You will overshadow all of mankind, but especially those

in charge of these beautiful creatures, whether they are the owners,

    breeders or legislators.

We pray for Your Will to be done.

We are grateful for the horse and all he has given to us as individuals

and as well as his contribution to civilization.

Thank You for blessing The Horse. In Jesus' name we pray."

##Nancy - I do a count of 8 between each step in the process of lighting a candle.

I've emailed the webmaster and a member of their board of directors about the problems. The webamster is on vacation until the 1st. Just difficult in that we all want to be able to light candles for B - especially now..... If we have enough people lighting, we should be able to get him back up to first.

You know Prayer was taken out of our schools, but yet each morning the Congress has prayer every morning I do not understand that? Schools can't pray, but congress can? Gee something I will never understand!

#####Jonna, PLEASE. That is all I'm going to say.

#####Jake, it's really great to see you here again after your long absence. Hope your current project is going well. You've been missed.

Don't know if you have kept up here in your absence, but Lucille (LMatte) has been working with Mr. Sorvino and has been instrumental in enlisting his help. I felt stung as well by the criticism of Mr. Sorvino. It was totally out of place and unwarranted. Amazed, in fact

    ####Jonna####

Your words about Mr. Sorvino were really sharp and even though you question him and what he can do for us, I know first hand that Mr. Sorvino is working really hard to save horses from slaughter. I know this because I talked with him and his daughter about their plan that is inches away from being released, and was there last weekend.
Please give the man a break, he is trying to help, not many celebs are even willing to do that.
You will find out in good time and then you will see the Sorvinos have worked hard to stop slaughter and save horses from it. This I know!
Sorry to bring this back up, but needed to be said, what the Sorvinos are doing is WAY beyond the letters.

ROBYN..THANKS FOR THE REPLY..AND SORRY I'M SHOUTING. I DON'T MEAN TO, BUT THE CAPS LOCK ON THIS MISERABLE KEYBOARD IS STUCK......AARRGGHH! I REALLY DO WISH MORE PEOPLE HAD GONE TO THE BLOOD HORSE WEBSITE AND READ THAT DAMNED ARTICLE ABOUT THE CENTRAL PARK STATUE. IT'S GROTESQUE AND CRUDE, IT'S NOT NICE, NOR RESPECTFUL, NOR EVEN ART....IT'S BEING MEAN TO GET ATTENTION, AND I, FOR ONE, WILL NOT PICKET ANYTHING THIS JERK DOES. THAT'S GIVING HIM FAR MORE RESPECT AND ATTENTION THAN HE DESERVES, AND PICKETING WILL ONLY GET HIS MISERABLE NAME AND CRAPPY STATUE ON THE NEWS. THE JACKSONS DO NOT DESERVE ANYTHING SO CRUEL........

PLEASE, PLEASE JUST GO TO BLOODHORSE.COM AND IF THE LINK TO THE STORY IS GONE, JUST DO A BASIC SITE SEARCH FOR "BARBARO STATUE"...YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT THIS NASTY THING IS GOING TO PUT UP IN CENTRAL PARK!!! THERE'S A PICTURE OF THE STATUE WITH THE STORY......AND NO WAY DO I CALL IT A STATUE OF BARBARO!

NOW THAT I'M DONE WITH MY SHOUTING, I'M GONNA TAKE A HAMMER TO THIS KEYBOARD AND THEN I'M GONNA GO TO BED!

SORRY, GUYS.....SOME THINGS JUST HAVE TO BE YELLED ABOUT, AND TREATING THE JACKSONS THIS WAY IS SO UNCALLED FOR AND INDECENT I CAN'T EVEN GET MY HEAD AROUND IT.

    NOW, I'LL SHUT UP.

    G'NIGHT ALL.

Martita asked me to post this - sorry if it's already up, haven't had a chance to check. IMO, can't get too much of Martita, anyway!

    THE LANGUAGE OF SPIRITS ..

    what is it for you?
i surely ask myself that today-

    -----------January 26TH,2008
    -----------saturday---------------ANOTHER CHANCE TO POST
to loved faNs of ,frIends of Barbaro
    ----------------------------------------------

The signs have been a plenty
perhaps you and i can meet on the pages here
to list all the individual cues and signs you received
FOR AT LEAST ONE WHOLE YEAR
a few clues pop up right away

to look at the races Barbaro began
complete to the derby and then
    to the preakness-
    yes i look at that
    in complete detail the dark
TO GOLD all the gifts the tragedy gave me
    gives me
AND THE PATH I AM ON TO

release it all the way forever--

and then to the historic ride to NBC

and then to the 8,9? months in a stall
and then his progression in the celestial
    realms

will you walk with me, a bit?
when you can..a few minutes here and there --

    so we can hear
    each
    other

i have seen the living proof of this ..this year

    what makes great horse races
    are the differences.
    .the will
to lay out the full passion to the moment of the race
perhaps you love lemonade and i love tomato juice
still a path for you and then me

to have a path of your own grows
the respect i lay before you
grown from one year of listening to you
    all
in many forms in this container made by ALEX BROWN and TIM WOOLEY

    for me,
    there was BARBARO's
    intelligent translations
    into speed
    focus of an eagle
and raw schooled disciplined to a hum
    power

a total sense of wanting to compete
out of the gate to the finnish line

of how he walked to the gate each time
bouncing almost rolling back and forth
how he went to the winners circle
surrounded by his glowing jockey and owners

her hand fiercely proud to parade his glory
humble yet a part of his breath and breathing self

    hold him
his nose nudging her ,acknowledging her
she had been riding right along side him
    the whole way

    proud
    air
surrounded the spectacle of his obvious power
    young bolt and so male
brimming with a sense of how wonderful it is to do your best
    AND BE HEARD

    for me
there was also the range of expression as he heard a camera shutter click
his personality of joy and bring it on..
popping right out of the lens

    the newsweek photographer?
who snapped him the night before the preakness
with the dangling tiny piece of straw
is the page i ripped out
to place in a handsome frame ,a part of my every day

    this is the same photo
    the cover
for edgar prado;s MY GUY BARBARO

    love it
Barbaro was chomping away and heard the steps and popped his head right up
i am very much here he smiles
.may be learned a few tricks form john henry aahaah.

got to love his sense of humor with the two leggeds..aaha
    i love it
    what a ham
the sign of how he heard his jokey
    never fighting him
listening as matz and brett taught him
    from the beginning of schooling
how peter said he would stop every morning and just look about
..see the track ..take it all in
    the sounds
    the smells
    ALL THAT GREEN WoNDER
    PULSING TOGETHER
    EACH HAS ITS OWN SOUND
AND IF I DONT STOP TO HEAR IT EVERY DAY
    THEN I MISSED IT..

    GONE

but i can try the next time JUST LIKE HE DID

    and then give his sign
    he was ready to school
    .just love that

    he
    knew
    about the little things
that make a day a day and real

how great a sign is that?

or lets go back to mill ridge farm

    there
..where we saw the weenling infant BARBARO
    picture of him
and how he was held with his baby halter
the arms and big tender hands of the man behind him
    steering him
pointing him,all to go in one fluid motion together
    ..not in section..big lesson
    .of fluid power motion
    .
    the first sense
of showing the little guy a direction
and where to put his body
    alongside
    the blue checkered flannel shirt
    the man
    listening
    physically HIMELF
    stretched
holding the raw power to come
with his own silent joy knowing . and not knowing yet
    .this is the one

    very good sign
    down to earth nothing fancy
    all about listening

    say
that was a good sign to me

there was that playing in the circle of fence at Fair hill

by now i have the sense of calm that he is telling me to
    stop the cutting pain

and revel in all the GIFTS
    signs he may have given
    YOU
    TOO
    maybe
    stop, BREATH IN AND OUT

and refLect that if you place whatever you want but someone suggested
    a red rose
    by you
you bring him to your eyes
    and heart
you are in a place o hearing him and being with him
in a new form we NEVER MAY HAVE WANTED

    but hey
    it is upon us
and i do not want to drown myself in any feeling
that will take me away from him
and all he gave and gives me
i dont want to miss a sign /.not one

    the ''dreaded''

    day
i change that word to that
    '' dreaming'' glorious day
when they had to let him go and i had to let him go
    complete his larger mission

    to speak for HIM
to honor the life of another .ONE HORSE IN HIS NAME
    that DAY
    THIS DAY
    SOMEHOW TO TOUCH A HORSE
    SEND HAY
    IN A SPECIAL WAY

ON THE 29TH OR PRESAGING THE 29TH
    LIKE NOW

    FOR ME
IT MIGHT BE THE CARRIAGE HORSES
    AND THE URBAN COWBOYS HERE
THAT I HAVE NOT ABANDONED BUT LOOKED TO SEE HOW TO
RAISE THE MONEY THEY NEED TAKES PLANNING FEELING TILL THE RIHGT MOMENT COMES

SINCE ROMEO WAS KILLED BY A CAR
    RIPPED OFF
HIS BOY RIDER WHO ADORED THE WHOLE THING UNTIL
THE SKY FELL UPON THEM ALL
NO FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO RECOVER REALLY
BUT A VERY SLOW WALK UP AGAIN
    nothing those kids dont understAnd
    only too well
    already

    then there is THE RACE

let me take you back to that day
    and lets fill the awful
    with love
    our tears
washing down the river of sand they call the preakness track
    and re fill
it with hope and a gift
    lets walk together
    down that road

    for a second
see if you recall the signs
then flash to how every one stepped up
    in a flash
there was no mercy for eyes that day
but how magnificent from edgar's deep listening
to the ever so tender loading
    to the arriving at NBC
    the lone figure
    meeting the van
in the dark of the night
    suspended hearts and agony
    waiting
she led them to a fresh clean stall
the whole team ready to pounce and save this horse
the signs then started to pour out

    'hey this is something else
    again

    no matter the conjectures
    opinions and judgements
    heaped upon those 8 months
    then some

    everyone
stepped up in their own way
no where in american racing history
besides seabiscuit, ruffian secretriat, man of war affirmed and a handosome little list
    goes on
had there been such a wave
a tidal wave of love and deeds to match the love
    and sustained ..

    so for me
it is the blue bucket and the hands
    both roy and gretchen jackson
    who never faltered
    cutting that grass
    was such a huge sign

ancient and archetype-pointng to the old life

    of listening to the earth

giving thanks for what one has
    and returning a daily offering..

as they did to their horse..and

all who lived around him to help and save him
    did non stop

    that it could move mountains
    tha love
how i loved feeling and hearing and seeing
    their your effort
    their your care
    to point fingers is really
    so facile
until you walk in those very same shoes

    not a peep

    Harriette
has posted a native amercan devotional every day
    ..and at sevn am
if i still here and not on the train to the city

    i have another sign

she is sending me her intention to
    ;LIFT UP

    HEY LETS LOOK AT THAT
    a moment
    today it is about
    WHAT I WOKE UP WITH
    TO WRITE TO YOU
    ABOUT
    UNDERSTANDING--holy cow

how he taught me to stop and hear the other side
    and all sides

    to listen and be alert
    to those ways of being
he showed me from the get go

    SO
    ON THE 29TH

MAYBE SOMEONE WOULD LIKE TO KEEP ADDING TO THE LIST ON THE FORUM

THE SIGNS OF HIS GREATNESS THREAD

I KNOW NOT HOW TO DO THESE THINGS MECHANICALLY

i also want to offer on the 29th

    say from three to 6pm
    a Thread

where you can come and Tell me AND ALL
    why it hurts so much
define it look a tit and give it up as an offeirng to him and his nation
own it turn it and shape it in a new way ?

WHAT IS IT ABOUT HIS PRESENCE AND THEN HIS DEPARTURE
    THAT HURTS YOU THE MOST

    own it for him
    in his name
    and then yoUrs \
    next tO his name
    own it FINALLY OWN IT
    SO HE CAN FLY
    UNEMCUMBERED
NOT ON MY ACCOUNT I SCREAM INTO THE AIR
    ,NOT BECAUSE OF ME
    I CRY
    WILL; I HOLD YOU BACK
LET ME MAKE THE SPACE FOR YOU TO SAY AS YOU WISH

    start a thread
    i will reply

i will be on line espec during the time 3-6pm eastern standard time

    the random acts of kindness
    is a wonderful idea
    ..thank you

the rose and the candles alsio and the radio stiton and being on lone
    and the vigil
which i will begin at 5am my time ..
and follow the footspers of all who walked thoe steps
..alone..that day and the night before
    here.

    may i walk with you
and hear you and follow my eyes and heart upwards
    to see
    feel
    him flying above
    whole now
    done with the earthly thing
look at all the horses loved and saved
    in his name
    they know
    they all know
it was barbaro that brought them bakc the gift of life
    the music
    once again

I FEEL HE IS READY TO TAKE ON HIS MANY CELESTIAL JOYS

    BECAUSE
    FOR ONE YEAR
    I CHANGED COURSE
MAKING LITTLE OFFERINGS LISTENING TO OTHERS I NEVER KNEW
    CRYING
    WEEPING
    SHEDDING
    LEARNING ABOUT HIS WORLD

    THE DARK
    AND THE GOLD
    HOW TO MAKE IT BETTER
EVEN IN MY OWN TINY WAY
    SENDING BACK WHAT I GET

    HE WILL RETURN
    HE LIVES IN MANY
    A NEW HORSE
    AND MAYBE COME IN
    ONE
    NEW HORSE
.IN A NEW HORSE OR BEING
    THAT GREAT WISE OLD SOUL
    WE KNEW KNOW AS
    BARBARO

    IN THE PANTHEON
    APOLLO BODY
I WAS SO BLESSED TO SEE
    TOUCH AND FEEL
    IN THE INVISIBVLE AND VISIBLE
IN SO MANY WAYS I AM STILL FIGURING OUT

    IT IS GLORIOUS
one of the worst story endings i have ever lived through
therefore i know it is THE STORY

    to
    OPEN MY HEART WIDER

    then a whisper
    says to me
    go on

    i dare you ,,Martita
