OPK so, the maniacs that live in Oswego--north of here by about 25 minutes have received the blessings of over three feet from mid last night to now and it's still coming down...

We "southerners" in the Syracuse area firmly believe that living so close to a huge nuclear power plant takes its toll.....

But vewwwy cold here and my little lurcher would not come in after breakfast. She has to patrol the Back 40 (fenced of course, but neglected and home to many small fur-bearing critters that Steffie considers potentially harmful to the household....

If I get a chance to grab her before she heads over the fence, I suit her up in smaller GH coats, and make a little nest thing on the sheltered back porch, but it is still waaay too cold for her to be out in it. I draw the line at about 45. So she'll have to put up with boredom all day, maybe all week...

OK, childrens. Let's try to help out the European Rescue folks...those beautiful Comtois just break my heart. Google the breed. The actual website has a breakdown of how much actual protein their meat has compared to other meats....

    Uch I just HATE it.

Oh grand, here come the nursemare foals. Go here on the DB and get to this posting photo of the first two: they look like they're plush toys, for god's sake...

    18997.10

It breaks my heart. The TB industry has to find a way to be responsible for these babies. I am sure that they all ALL do this, but how they handle these throw-aways---I am sure many go to slaughter. It's the kind of stuff that makes you never want to watch another race, visit another TB farm.....etc.

God help them all, there will be plenty.

Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George and all of the rest of the fabulous gang in Equine Heaven...!!

    MORNING POST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI

    STRATEGY FOR MONDAY JANUARY 21

HSUS NATIONAL CALL IN DAY SCHEDULED FOR JANUARY 22. For more information go the Anti Slaughter Thread on the Discussion Board

Our voices are being heard and the support is growing. You should all be very proud of our accomplishments. The time has expired for responses to the NY Times Article. Thanks to everyone who wrote. Now is the time to write Letters to the Editor to counteract the “unwanted” horse theory that pro slaughter is trying to pass off as fact. You can find links to John Holland’s wonderful article on the WIKI. It is true that the economy and drought have caused hardships for many. However, this is a temporary situation and there is still no correlation between horses sent to slaughter and incidents of abuse. We MUST get the truth out to as many people as possible!!

We are presently keeping the pressure on the leadership to get S311 put on the calendar quickly or to support any legislation that contains language to end horse slaughter and the transportation of American horses to slaughter. With the Senate coming back this week, it is time to pick it up a notch!!

LIST WITH LEADERSHIP OFFICE TELEPHONE NUMBERS

Senate Majority Leader: Harry Reid ph: 202-224-2158 fax: 202-224-7327

Senate Minority Leader: Mitch McConnell ph: 202-224-3135 fax: 202-226-1374

Senate President Pro Tempore: Robert S. Byrd ph: 202-224-3954 fax: 202-228-0002

Assistant Minority Leader: Jon Kyl ph: 202-224-4521 fax: 202-228-0034

Very important message from Vets for Equine Welfare. Go to Anti Slaughter Thread on DB

The State Groups still need help in many areas. For those of you who would like to get involved, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net. Or you can find your own state leader listed below on the WIKI page.

You will find it very rewarding!!

We are BARBARO's VOICE.....let it be heard!!

###Yeah, no banks open, no mail delivery--none of the FUN stuff--and I have to work. Just for a few hours, but work nonetheless.

###Big storms blowing in (and me with three days of riding lessons with my favorite instructor "on the line" for Friday-Sunday). Snow predicted to 2,000 feet from the second storm, due in on Wednesday. I live at 3,500 feet and LIKE snow well enough but not to haul the horse down to sea level (Redlands, California area) while it's coming down.

###Stay warm, dry, and batten all hatches (Alex and others ;o)

###Hoping to hear good news (or certainly, no BAD news) about Little City, pulled up yesterday at Turf Paradise. He's by Swiss Yodeler who is by Huey's sire, Eastern Echo.

###Oh--I've been remiss in NOT thanking Alex once again (and early and often) for this site and the wonderful opportunities he has given us.

    LADEEEATTAFENS UPDATE:)

Good Monday, Martin Luther King Holiday, ABR Famblee!!!

I went to 'play' with *MISTER&ROSIE* yesterday afternoon before the *GREEN BAY* Game!!!

The kiddds were in the pasture:) YES!!! *MISTER* saw meeeeeee....and began what I like to call, his 'JOHN WAYNE SAUNTER', a VERY 'purposeful', very 'deliberate', VERY, 'look at ME:) MY Ladeee is HERE and she's got TREATS, walk, on over to the fence!!

I had to go 'collect' Horsemommy and then we walked down to where we climb under the electric wire....They were BOTH QUITE HAPPY to see us....'SPECIALLY MEEEEEEE:) 'cause, ya know, I'VE GOT THE CARITS:)

*MISTER* has his FULL BLOWN WINTER COAT ON NOW...even more 'luxurious' than at Christmastime:) So, they ate carits to their heart's content....I 'smooshed' and 'skritched' and told *MISTER* he REALLY needs to stop 'rolling in the mudddd':) Miss Rosie was sweet as HONEY:) Such a Ladeeee!!! Let me give her some kisses....'got more carits, Auntyladeeee'?

Molly Labradoris came a runnin', too:) and Jimmy and Annie, the two Jack Russells who belong to Horsemommy and dad:) EVERYONE had carits and Milk Bones....well, not the horseys, they just had CARITS:)

Horsemommy took WONDERFUL pics of me with the new digital camera a fren gave us for Christmas....ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!! I don't know how to 'send' them:( Daughter installed the 'share your pics' program on this computer...but when I try to 'share' I keep coming up with a message saying the attempt to do so, was 'unsuccessful':/ Horsemommy said I can go to Wal Mart and have them put on a Disc, then I can share....so, I'll get to that ASAP...and someone 'here' can help me figure out how to post to the DB??? I even have some pics of Mister's BEAUUUUUUUUTIFUL FETLOCKS!!! And I 'discovered' he has grown some VERY LONG, VERY SOFT, WHITE HAIRS...ALOTS OF 'EM!!! on the insides of his back legs up by his HORSEY BUTT:) He has beauuuuuuutiful 'WINTER HAIRS' EVERYWHERE, FAMBLEE:):):)

Anyway, the visit was wonderful....we didn't put them into their pens, so I didn't get the usual 'my heart is melting, one-on-one time' with my BOYFREN...but still and all, it was a FABULOUS few minutes!!! I'm planning to return there tomorrow in the early afternoon...and I'll be RIGHT HERE, sharing my experiences:)

I hope 'yole' have a GREAT DAY today:)

My heart is saying, maybe if you start reading this stuff now, you will be standing up on the 29th. How lucky we all were to have had a little part in the life and times of Barbaro.

All because Edgar saved him, then Dr.R. and NBC saved him, and then, most importantly, the Jacksons SHARED HIM WITH THE WORLD.

    The New York Times
    Editorial
    One Horse Dies
    Published: January 30, 2007

Why should we feel so much grief at the loss of one horse? After all, this is a world in which horses are sacrificed again and again for the sport of humans. Barbaro was euthanized yesterday, eight months after he shattered his right hind leg at the start of the Preakness Stakes. After an injury like that, most racehorses would have been put down minutes later. But every race is a complex equation — a balance of economics, athleticism, equine grace and conscience. Conscience often comes in last, but not in this case. Barbaro’s owners gave that horse exactly what he had given them, which is everything. It was the very least they could do, and yet it seemed truly exceptional in a sport that is as often barbarous as it is beautiful.

Barbaro was exceptional because he won the Kentucky Derby and looked as if he might have a chance at the Triple Crown. But nearly everyone who met him also talked of the life he displayed, a vivid presence that was so much more visible to us because it happened to belong to a winner.

Humans are not especially good at noticing horses, but Barbaro was easy to notice. And if his life caused us to pay attention to the possibilities of all horses, his death should cause us to pay attention to the tragedy inherent in the end of so many horses. Barbaro’s death was tragic not because it was measured against the races he might have won or even against the effort to save his life. It was tragic because of what every horse is.

You would have to look a long, long time to find a dishonest or cruel horse. And the odds are that if you did find one, it was made cruel or dishonest by the company it kept with humans. It is no exaggeration to say that nearly every horse — Barbaro included — is pure of heart. Some are faster, some slower. Some wind up in the winner’s circle. But they should all evoke in us the generosity of conscience — a human quality, after all — that was expended in the effort to save this one horse.
    ##################################################

I particularly love this simple line:
"Barbaro’s owners gave that horse exactly what he had given them, which is everything."

    Love you, FoBs.

    Monday, January 21st...
Georgia Hartman called with the news. Windmill Feed Store burned down. Shoot. I go there at least once a week. The only feed store in Woodland to sell the Purina brand of equine senior. Also I like to buy my salt blocks from Windmill Feed. They help load your truck. At the other feed stores, when you buy 20 salt blocks and they each weigh a ton, employees suddenly remember it is break time. Hopefully Windmill Feed rebuilds. I can buy Purina feed at Higbys in Dixon, but the drive is long. There is an A&W Root Beer stand in Dixon, a reward of sorts.

Costco in Woodland opens next month. The biggest Costco in the history of Costco. You should taste their caramel apple pie. Topped with vanilla ice cream. A cup of hot chocolate. A 47 inch wide screen. Fire in the fireplace, sorry Windmill Feed. Maybe a rerun of The Munsters.

Jessica Talbot called with the news. Jessica found a job with a large horse ranch outside of San Diego, and she moves later this month. Congratulations to Jessica Talbot. It was in 2003 when Jessica came to us and adopted Minute Maid, a beautiful filly she calls M&M. Jessica keeps M&M at a training barn in Davis. Jessica also owns an older mustang gelding she bought at an auction in Petaluma. His name is Jones, and at the barn in Davis he has become the perfect lesson horse. Holly Meeks will transport both M&M and Jones to their new ranch in San Diego.

Yesterday I wrote to you about Molly in Stockton, who found her old gelding Gus Dude at an auction in Roseville. Gus Dude comes to our ranch this week to live until summer. Molly has a summer job lined up, and then she can move Gus Dude closer to her apartment.

Also coming to us this week is a thoroughbred mare from a feed lot in Elk Grove. 45 cents a pound, and there is a racing tattoo which says she is 11 years old.

And from a chicken fighting feed lot in Vallejo we bought a thoroughbred gelding, and he too will arrive this week. There is no racing tattoo, but the gelding is probably 5 or 6 years old.

Yesterday 3 more race horses came to live with us, and their pictures are below. We are oh so crowded. The man on the radio is talking about rain, but our skies are clear. 34 degrees right now. The coffee is from Peets, and microwave waffles were made by Eggo. Enjoy your holiday off Monday, and be sure to hug your horses. Get well soon Jennifer Wright, who has a horrible chest cold. Her boyfriend is Rob, and he brings Jennifer egg flower soup from a close by restaurant. Rob does the laundry. Cleans the kitchen. Takes the 2 dogs for a walk. Gives Jennifer cough syrup with a spoon to her lips. Rob is a keeper...

    Joe

We said hello to 3 horses from the race track yesterday.

Top left is a filly, and her name is Hasti Serve. She just turned 3 years old.

Top right is a beautiful black gelding, and his name is Turbulent City. I suppose we will call him Turbo. He too is 3, and he comes to us with a puffy left ankle.

Bottom left is the very cute Hampton Way, and I suppose we will call him Hampton. He is 6.

And bottom right shows you a picture of our old gelding Limo. He came to us last summer, and we are almost certain Limo is 103 years old. Limo loves to carry young kids around.

####1-21-08 New fundraising effort for Kentucky Equine Humane Center:

    Hi Everyone

I am starting a fundraising effort to raise $250.00 to sponsor a class in the Kentucky Equine First Annual All Breeds Horse Show. The horse show will be held in Shelbyville, KY on March 29, 2008. All proceeds from the horse show will go to support the operations of the Kentucky Equine Humane Center. Don?t you think it would be a great idea to have a FOB sponsored class???

If you are interested in supporting this effort please send me a check (as I don?t have any electronic means of accepting donations). You may e-mail me (jbryan@bhsi.com) privately with your pledge and I will send you the mailing information. I will maintain a list of contributors and post updates once a week. The deadline for donations will be March 1, 2008. Please note that these donations will not be tax deductible. If you want to make a tax deductible donation please go directly to KyEHC?s website and make a donation per their instruction.

You may ask what will happen if more than $250.00 is raised. If there is enough to sponsor another class(es), that will be done. If not, the remaining money will be donated directly to KyEHC.

Kentucky Equine Humane Center (KyEHC) was started by Stacie Hancock and others. Staci Hancock has been instrumental on the horse rescue scene for quite some time. She insisted that Gato del Sol be brought home from overseas to live the rest of his life out at Stone Farm and be treated as a Kentucky Derby winner deserves.

Lori Naegle is the Executive Director. Lori Naegle was a cofounder of Re Run. So, there is a great deal of experience in this organization. One of the appealing aspects about this rescue is they will take all breeds. Some of you may recognize this organization. A FOB rescued a paint (named Willie) for $50.00 and KyEHC took him in. He had an eye infection which resulted in him having to have his eye removed. You can read more about him on Alex?s Discussion Board Refer to 11152.1

    Here is their mission statement.
    MISSION STATEMENT
To provide humane treatment and shelter while working as a clearinghouse to seek adoptive homes for all of Kentucky's unwanted equines, regardless of breed.
To educate the public and raise awareness for responsible equine ownership so that fewer horses end up in crisis.
To work with and serve as a model for organizations with the same mission in other states: to save America's equines from inhumane treatment.

    Good morning, famblee.

It's Dr. King Day, I'm off work, and getting new miniblinds installed in my bedroom. Bagheera, who is 10 months old today!!! is hiding under the bed.

Dr. King Day....honoring the fight for civil rights, for equality, for humanity, for compassion and justice. It is a good day to call for the horses.

Wind chill of 3 degrees here in St. Louis, and freezing crap and snow for tonight. Nothing compared to what other parts of the country are getting, but I'm worried about my resident rabbits and birds. What the horses are going through nationwide boggles the mind.

    ###KyEHC Class sponsorship fundraiser

Some over on the discussion board wanted more explanation about what a "Class" is in a horse show. Thought others here might want the same info.

A horse show is a day (or more) in which people bring their horses to a location to show them off. There will be various classes (similar the various types of races at a racetrack) that people can choose to show their horse in. There will be a judge that looks at each horse entered in the class. The judge determines who will be first, second, third and so on. The individual/horse that wins the class get a prize (trophy, ribbon, sometimes cash). Those that are 2nd and so on get a ribbon.

Each class has a sponsor that helps to off set the cost of the prizes etc. The class sponsor is usually published in the program for the horse show. The sponsor is also announced at the time the winners of the class are announced. Many times the sponsor is allowed to present the trophy and ribbons to the winners. The announcer may also make some remarks about the sponsor.

So, this is a great opportunity to raise funds for KyEHC as well as get the FOB's name out to the public.

Again, if you are interested in helping with this fundraiser please contact jbryan@bhsi.com. Please put KyEHC in the subject line of the e-mail.

I'm taking a break, and was just going through archives. One year ago:

By RASHA MADKOUR, Associated Press Writer
Sat Jan 20, 4:15 PM ET

HOUSTON - A federal appeals court says slaughtering horses for meat is illegal in Texas, where the animals symbolize the Old West and where two of the nation's three processing plants are located.

The decision, issued Friday by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, overturns a lower court's ruling last year on a 1949 Texas law that banned horse slaughter for the purpose of selling the meat for food.

The lower court said the Texas law was invalid because it had been repealed by another statute and was pre-empted by federal law.

However, a panel of three judges on the 5th Circuit disagreed, saying the law still stood and was still enforceable.

The 5th Circuit decision also cited more than the law.

"The lone cowboy riding his horse on a Texas trail is a cinematic icon. Not once in memory did the cowboy eat his horse," wrote Judge Fortunato Benavides.

The ruling involves the Dallas Crown Inc. slaughter mill in Kaufman and Beltex Corp. in nearby Forth Worth. The nation's third plant is in Illinois, run by Cavel International Inc. at DeKalb. All three operations are foreign-owned.

A bill pending before Congress would shutter all three operations.

The plants ship the meat overseas, since it is considered a delicacy in parts of Europe and Asia.

About 88,000 horses, mules and other equines were slaughtered in 2005, according to the U.S. Agriculture Department.

While proponents such as the American Veterinary Medical Association say slaughter is a kind way to deal with old horses and a better alternative to abandonment, opponents including Texas oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens and country music star Willie Nelson have argued that the killing of equines is un-American — and that many young horses are killed as well.

The Humane Society of the United States, which filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the case, applauded the 5th Circuit decision.

"This is the most important court action ever on the issue of horse slaughter," Wayne Pacelle, the society's president and chief executive, said in a statement. "When this ruling is enforced, a single plant in Illinois will stand alone in conducting this grisly business."

There was no immediate response to calls seeking comment Saturday from representatives of Dallas Crown and Beltex.

    WOO HOO FAMILY

CINCINNATI NEWS STATION TO CARRY HORSE SLAUGHTER STORY... THIS IS BIG ! ! ! !

We here in Cincinnati have been trying so hard to get coverage and it will happen today on the 4:00 news.

Here is what is up on their website as of now:

Congressman wants to end slaughter of U.S. horses abroad

    Last Update: 10:17 am

WASHINGTON (AP) - Rep. Ed Whitfield is co-sponsoring legislation that would ban the transport, sale, purchase or donation of horses to be slaughtered for human consumption.

The 1st District Congressman says he considers the practice inhumane and wants to see it ended.

The idea of the bill is not only to ban the slaughter in the U.S. but also prevent horses from being taken to other countries for slaughter.

Some agriculture groups argue that slaughter is a practical way of dealing with unwanted horses that might otherwise be neglected.

Court decisions last year shuttered the last three slaughter plants in the United States, one in Illinois and two in Texas.

Dee: we need rainbows today. We will probably need rainbows from now till the 29th and a few days after...I just did all my calls, and I am feeling that "When dear Lord, when?" feeling that I get when I hear about whispers that Cavel is twitching again, that nursemare foals are just so much meat in this country, that Joe's feedmill burned to the ground and a precious barn full of HAY right next to it.

I just feel too old to be feeling these feelings. I thought this would stop at some point and I'd have perspective, distance, discernment and objectivity--to some extent...

I don't feel like I am in the right world this morning. I even called Lynne B who to me is one of the most grounded souls out there in my little world...hoping some groundedness would rub off...

Well. I'm supposed to exposing young Bo to more leash work, and it is way too cold to do that, so I will call him over to me on the futon, get out my boo, cover myself with dogs and eventually sleep.

When dear FoBs, when oh when will I outgrow this feeling of being overwhelmed. I am afraid of going to the DB to see if HREurope's Sopie and Cognac have disappeared onto some ugly truck...beautiful roam percheron of my dreams....I am afraid to ask.
And the Comtois? Members of an ancient race of horses...who ask nothing of us....

And what do we do for them? Eat them? It's all just too much, my darlings....

Rainbows Dee. I think we will need many of them over the next couple of weeks...so rest up, my friend, and then let it fly.

    QUESTION ABOUT CAVEL??????

They are going back to court to " try " to reopen. How can they reopen without USDA inspectors.
I found this in the Rep. Whitfield story...

"Buried deep within the government spending bill Congress passed last month is a provision that effectively bans horse slaughter in the United States.

The measure bars the U.S. Department of Agriculture from collecting fees to pay for horse meat inspections, without which slaughter can't legally continue."

So, even if they were to win, which I don't think they will, how would they be able to do anything?
Wouldn't this keep their doors closed and if so, what is their point for going back to court?

    Thank you for any help.

    Love,
    Verna

    Posted by: Verna1 at January 21, 2008 6:09 PM

I don't know, Verna. Now I'm scared how they might try to get around inspections. I don't trust anyone, if you know what I mean.

Posted by: Margie at January 21, 2008 6:14 PM

I know exactly what you mean.
I don't trust Cavel at all, they seem to just keep rising from the ashes. But, if this law is iron clad, they should not be able to continue with HS. I don't get it. I wanted to write something to counter their opening, saw this about the law and can't make an argument cause it doesnt make sense. Maybe it was buried so deep they didn't see it either :) One can only hope & pray.

KENTUCKY - our horses need our help right now. During Derby week pictures and names of the horses are flashed before the public with all their beauty and grace. And we are reminded once again of what magnificent animals they are and how proud we are of them. However, the sad fact is that some of these horses we have been so proud of and celebrated over the years have ended up facing a gruesome death by slaughter.

Please help prevent this from ever happening again. Join a state group and help us call our legislators to get the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act passed. KENTUCKY residents, please contact kntckyblgrass8@aol.com. The list is short and will take very little of your time. Thank you, Shirl

They have been waiting a month to be ransomed. The rescue is legitimate, I have worked with them many times to save horses.

    STRATEGY FOR TUESDAY JANUARY 22

TUESDAY IS NATIONAL CALL IN DAY…TUESDAY IS NATIONAL CALL IN DAY

Call your 2 U.S. Senators and 1 U.S. Representative. Politely urge your Senators to co-sponsor and vote yes on S 311; ask your Representative to co-sponsor and vote yes for HR 503. If your senators or representatives are already co-sponsors, it is important that you use tomorrow to call and thank them and let them know how important this legislation is to you. Please ask their help in getting it to the floor for a vote. Let them know that we are still here and are not going away!!!

In the past few week, newspapers have been full of news about the impact of the closure of the U.S. horse slaughterhouses last year. They are saying that abandonment, abuse, and horses found left on the roadside has increased. They have even been asserting ridiculously that there are now thousands of unwanted horses roaming around the country. They then warn that passing legislation to ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter will have even more dire consequences for our poor horses than what we are seeing now. YOU MUST SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT

Get out your address books and ask everyone you know to make these calls on Tuesday. Passing the word is the most important thing we can do right now!!

For more information on National Call In Day go RALLYFORHORSES.COM

Regular strategy will resume for Wednesday but we are asking everyone to put their full efforts into National Call In Day for Tuesday.

Remember….WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE…….let it be heard loud and clear.

    Thanks,

    Shelley and Debra

    Hello Mike Rea,

I have spent ALL day dealing with auditors and their requests for invoices, receipts, explanation of numbers, blah, blah, blah.

(If there are any auditors here, I apologize! I truly admire what you do, but ANYone who knows me, knows that I am NOT a numbers kind of gal!)

I am tired, kinda crabby and about ready for bed. But Mike, I have to tell you, I HAD to watch your Extreme Makeover Home Edition debut! I was not able to watch it last night and thank Heaven's Alex posted the link.

Mike, when you appeared on horseback to give your portion of the interview, I was beaming! I had a smile a mile wide. I am SO proud of you!

My husband asked what I was watching on the computer that made me so happy and I just said, "Mike!"

You don't know me but I grabbed the opportunity to say a quick "Hello Mike" to you in the lobby of the Days Inn in Delaware at the time of the Celebration.

Mike, you are genuinely happy on horseback and I am so thankful that you have the opportunity and courage to get back in the saddle.

Thank you Mike. You are an inspiration and I am so glad that you were captured on film for EVERYone to see!

Good night to you Mike and may you have sweet dreams of Barbaro and of your favorite horse at Freedom Hills! xxoo

    from the Bloodhorse:

CURLIN 3YO CHAMP; HORSE of YEAR

Curlin began the 2007 racing season as a maiden. After winning his first race of the year by an eye-popping 12 3/4 lengths, the son of Smart Strike has been nearly unstoppable. His remarkable campaign carried him all the way to the Breeders? Cup Classic - Powered by Dodge (gr. I), which he won powerfully over a field of deeply talented 3-year-olds.

On Jan. 21, he won another runaway victory at the Eclipse Awards where he was named the 2007 Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male. It was nothing short of a landslide, with Curlin attracting 262 of 266 votes.

Curlin was bred by Fares Farm and, while racing, was owned by Midnight Cry Stable?s Shirley Cunningham and William Gallion, Jess Jackson, Satish Sanan, and George Bolton. For all but one start, the colt was trained by Steve Asmussen. Curlin finished the year with six wins, a second, and two thirds out of nine starts. His earnings total $5,102,800.

Prior to the Breeders? Cup World Championships, Curlin had finished third in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), won the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), and finished second by a head to Rags to Riches in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I). He also won The Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I).
