    Barbaro Updates: 488

    updates are now here.

Update 2986: Curlin had an easy 5/8ths work this morning: Curlin, Pyro, Grasshopper Work.

Update 2985: A post-ski vacation update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:

Today was a bright and sunny Friday which was quite a switch from the snow we returned in last night. It was gorgeous in Utah but we are so happy to be back with the horses. Needless to say that Tim will be keeping his day job!!! The horses seemed none the worse with us not being here. Under the watchful eye of Robbie and the grooms everyone appears to be fine. Rocky has gotten strong and competitve and must really love this cold weather. This morning I stopped in the barn to see everyone and Kitty was in her stall jumping up and down. She stopped whriling around long enough for me to give her a pat. Molly continues to be in great form as does Two of Wands. Binkley was very happy to see Tim and enjoyed his breakfast and a little attention. Luke has had new shoes while we were away and hopefully I'll be able to get him to the track a few times this weekend. He is steady as a rock and loves to go with the youngsters. I'm not sure what will be happening this weekend but I'm sure there will be some excitement to report on.

Update 2984: A chilly and damp morning here this morning at Sam Houston Race Park. Leaving work it was 44 degrees, which is pretty grim. I hope its warmer tomorrow, I am supposed to be sailing after work!

We had nine sets today, six before the break and three after the break. Two of my sets went to the gate and came out of the front. One set came out very sharply, and is ready to work from the gate (with the jocks), my horse in the other set sat back and when the gates opened it took me a while to encourage her out of the gate. We walked and then jogged away, but kept straight. She will require plenty of gate schooling in the next couple of weeks. All my other horses went nicely for a pleasant morning's work. One of our exercise riders (Scott), went shopping yesterday for Giant's gear. He had a few of the others' wearing Giants wear and they all thought it was rather amusing ...

Update 2983: Its sad to report that Hesanoldsalt, who ran in Barbaro's Florida Derby, died yesterday in a freak accident at Palm Meadows: Hesanoldsalt Euthanized.

First foals have now been reported for Artie Schiller and Lion Tamer.

    Please keep calling and writing.

The strategy will remain the same until January 22 or until we are told otherwise. Prayers for Irene Griffith, who's 9 year old quarterhorse "Rocky"was shot between the eyes yesterday in Riverview Florida. They do not know who,or why,but the poor woman is despondent.See DB for link.

    Good morning all

Much of the racing affected by rain, rain, rain here. Ireland is a washout.

Good to see old-timers back yesterday, and the mention of some names.

    #### Robyn, I don't hear from Jo at all. I think she has turned away from racing altogether. I do miss her in the mornings with her "Good morning Barbaro...my sweet baboo and wonder-horse". I always seemed to get the theme from Champion, the Wonder Horse stuck in my brain for the rest of the day and the words suited Barbaro so well. Shelley would be still up and then Marg would arrive and Janice and you. Seems such a long time ago now.

    ### Eileen

There has been no announcement that I have seen about Ouija Board lately. I do check quite often now. I'm also looking out for foals of George Washington. There is at least one due - and maybe as many as 8 or 12. No-one sees very clear on the subject.

    Good morning, fellow Fans!

Waking up to yet more snow in the Downeast state this morning. Not supposed to amount to much but they are calling off schools left and right, including my university.

So good to see all the names yesterday. And Hi to Liz in UK - Yes, I miss Jo and the early conversations here. Hope you weather improves and no racehorses suffer because of the footing.

I'm off to put my unexpected day off to good use.

Hay, FOB's! This is a little off-topic, but relevant to us animal lovers...I read this morning where one of the "survivors" of Tatiana's escape has admitted to harassing Tatiana - that he and his friends were drunk, high.

    The truth finally came out.

Good Friday Morning FOBs - TGIF!!!

    So sad about Hesanoldsalt.

Lyn - I'm not surprised to hear that about Tatiana. They were saying that from day 1.

My prayers for Irene and her loss of"Rocky". Unbelievable, really.

Let's close this week by making lots of noise to Congress. They know the truth, just won't do the right thing. Persistence and determination DO produce results, so let's just keep doing what we've been doing.

Brenda - I agree with you. I could live to be 100 and never see another snowflake and I'd be happy. I like to see it on TV and in movies, that's about it.

    Have a wonderful day everyone!!

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

    AMERICAN VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
    HURTING, NOT HELPING, HORSES

January 17, 2008 (Washington, D.C.) - Amid claims that animal welfare advocates are to blame for the steep increase in horses going to Mexico for slaughter, the Washington, D.C.-based Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) today fired back. The group, which has been at the forefront of the effort to end the slaughter of American horses for human consumption abroad, pointed the finger of blame directly at the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) for its culpability in the suffering of American horses.
“From day one, AWI has worked to end the slaughter of American horses here and over the border. The AVMA, on the other hand, has lobbied Congress to block passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act,” said AWI’s deputy director of government and legal affairs, Chris Heyde.
Records show that AWI has a long history of working with Members of Congress to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (AHSPA), which would prohibit the slaughter of horses here for human consumption as well as their export for the same purpose. While the federal bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a landslide vote in 2006 it is pending on Capitol Hill. Meanwhile, AWI successfully worked with legislators and activists in Texas and Illinois to close the country’s three remaining horse slaughter plants last year under state law.
“AWI actively worked in Texas and Illinois to close those plants. Citizens there wanted the plants gone and Congress had failed to pass a ban, so the states invoked their right to control what happens to horses within their own state lines. But the goal for all genuine equine advocates, of course, is passage of the federal bill. That’s why we’re taking off the gloves with the AVMA on this,” said Heyde.
*****Documents held by AWI show that the AVMA is part of a coalition founded by the companies that own the defunct domestic slaughterhouses which are now exporting horses to Mexico and Canada for slaughter. The coalition’s primary goal is to block passage of the AHSPA.
“It’s ironic that those screaming the loudest about the mass exports are actively working with the very same slaughterhouses that are shipping our horses to Mexico. How the AVMA can claim to be acting in the name of animal welfare is anyone’s guess,” said Heyde. “While they’re helping to send horses to Mexico for slaughter AWI is working to shut the trade down. We’re also promoting responsible horse ownership, combating unscrupulous breeding and working to ensure placement of horses in need through our leadership in the Homes for Horses Coalition. I think it’s pretty clear who has the best interest of the horses at heart, and it’s not the AVMA.”

S 311and HR 503 just pass the dam bill now! Stop the transport to Mexico and Canada now.

Pain in my heart this morning,

Tears on my cheeks this morning,

Awakening to the sad news of the death of Hesanoldsalt,

Another racehorse I had allowed into my fragile heart is gone,

At least he had people who loved him...

Rest in peace, HESANOLDSALT, and may light perpetual shine upon you. Run the verdant pastures of heaven, dance among the clouds...Barbaro will remmeber you from the competition of your earthly race - may you romp through eternity together.

    Good morning to all.

We (I actually have three friends that are going to go out with me) are going out this afternoon and hold up our "Mike Huckabee Eats Horses, Google It" signs on busy street corners during rush hour this evening. Want to try and change a few more minds in the Upstate before SC Rep. primary tomorrow.
Ole Huckleberry went to another rally (Klan meeting) up in our neck of the woods last night and professed his love for the Confederate flag, openly and loudly (with the rest of the brotherhood). This guy is really scary.

I also worked on my Barbarotini recipe last night and this is what I have:

Prepare glasses: melt some chunks of dark chocolate in a saucepan, stir until smooth.
Dip the rims of martini glasses into the chocolate and immediately lift and let drip a moment before standing upright. Let harden (will harden better if you place in frig to chill for about 15 minutes).
Side note: while the chocolate is still soft, you can also then dip the rims into sugar prior to letting the rims harden.

    Then, the fun part:
    In your martini shaker....

1 1/2 oz. of Vanilla Vodka (we used Stoli)
1/2 oz. dark creme de cacao (want to keep that dark "bay" color to it)
1/2 oz. heavy cream (we made a couple with half and half and it worked okay too)
1/2 oz. Frangelico (I like the "nutty" taste, but you could leave this out and it would still be a good drink)
1/2 oz. dark chocolate liquer (we used dark Godivas)
1/2 oz. Creme de Menthe (got to get the mint in there)

Shake with ice and strain into the prepared cocoa rimmed martini glass. Then garnish with Andes mint shavings.

Awakening to more loss from the TB world. What a shocker for Zito...so senseless. and the horse in FL: well, that just defies logic, sense, order...well, I guess we just have to pray that the cretin is caught and punished...but the poor owner. Even capture of her horse's killer will really do her no good...

I would be crazy about the safety of my other horses.....

Yesterday was AMAZING> and like I said, we're going to need this sense of unity and courage in numbers.

So call, help the rescues as you can, and let's get these damned bills passed.

    ### Just spoke with Earlene Cole from Longmeadow Rescue. She called about the 2 horses down the road from me that have been abandoned. They are getting right on it and are going to try to get help for these horses right away. One very important thing she told me is that The claims that the closing of the slaughter plants would lead to more abuse and starvation of horses is not holding up. they have not seen an increase over the normal amount of neglect than they did before. This is very important for the argument in DC. I am going to forward this info on the Daryl. But the good news is that help is on the way for these 2 poor neglected horses. Jen

    Ha, ha, Lynne Brown,
So you keep up with my rantings about Huckleberry out on WORD NEWS RADIO here in Greenville. :) its good to know people are reading that stuff. I just don't know where all the support Huckleberry is getting is coming from. I guess his Christian Conservative Right (aka Klan). He disgusts most people I talk to. I guess the brotherhood just doesn't talk to little ole women like me :)

As for the Barbarotini's I am nominating them as my drink of choice for Derby Day. (Mint juleps are the historical choice, but bourbon is just not my drink).

    Here is Joe!!!

Friday, January 18th... Cat Surge, a beautiful gelding we called Sarge, has a new home with an event trainer in Davis. Sarge hops on a trailer later today, which gives us a much needed stall. This weekend Hoofbeats Horse Transportation will bring us several new race horses. We are scrambling for space. Our round pens are slowly drying, and there is no rain in sight.

Also later today a skinny mare living in Folsom will be moved to her new home in Woodland. The mare might be a thoroughbred, and she is probably 12 or 14. A big Thank You to Jennifer Wright for providing the transportation.

And tomorrow a take your breath away mare living in Martinez will be moved to her new home in Vacaville. The mare is picture perfect, and she is probably a thoroughbred. A big Thank You to Holly Meeks for providing the transportation.

We have a list of 36 horses in need. If you are able to provide a home for one of these horses give me a call. And if you live in the Sacramento or San Francisco area we will be happy to provide transportation. Jennifer Wright, Holly Meeks, Georgia Hartman and Stephanie Diaz are standing by. All gassed up and ready to go.

    (more to come)

    SCR NEEDS YOUR HELP!

SCR is asking for help in finding low cost, good quality hay! Our hay supplier is short this year by 1000 bales - that is 1000 bales of hay we were counting on to feed our horses! If anyone knows of a good quality hay supply for a decent price in the East Granby, CT area, or knows of a hay supplier willing to deliver, please contact Amy at SCREquineRescue@yahoo.com. We will give a tax write off for discounted prices! We need to feed these horses!

    SCR's Card-A-Thon was a huge success!
The winner is HANS! Hans was kind enough to share his prize of bran mash with the rest of the barn, so everyone got a squishy, delicious treat. Thank you to everyone who sent a card in. Keep your pens and stamps handy though...Valentine's Day is just around the corner!

    SCR'S ANNUAL CALENDARS ARE DONE!!
Now is the time to purchase your 2008 calendars. They can be seen at our cafepress and zazzle stores.

JOE CONTINUED: dAMN, THESE GUYS ARE GOOD...

    Notes from all over:

Tis the season. Congratulations to Patti Lu, who has a new puppy from Animal Control. The puppy is a mixture of this and that, and his name is Benson.

Congratulations to Dylan Dunn, who has a new puppy from Animal Control. The puppy is a golden lab mix, and his name is Rock Star. Rocky for short.

Congratulations to Jodi Tuft, who has a new older dog from Animal Control. The dog was on borrowed time, and the very first thing she does is jump on the bed for a nap. My feelings exactly...

And congratulations to Heather Boyce, who is the proud new owner of a large yellow cat from Animal Control. The lucky cat only had one day left to be adopted, and then it was lights out. Along comes Heather, and now the cat is named Pumpkin.

Congratulations to Lisa Anderson, who is the happy new owner of a badly injured gelding from the race track. Lisa goes to school in Berkeley, and this is her very first horse.

And way to go Connie Myer, or it could be Mier, and she is the happy new owner of an older gelding who is neglected. Connie watched as the poor gelding became skinny, so she went to the house and made an offer. The gelding is now named Clark, and he is a quarter horse with color. Connie says her kids are grown and gone, and Clark is now her number one focal point. Always liked that term. Focal Point.

    Notes from our ranch:

Gidget is doing great, though she is still very sore. The starving gelding Adam has gained at least 50 pounds, and he is becoming a sweetheart. The starving gelding Moose has gained 30 or 40 pounds, and he is not so sweet. The badly broken knee of Gone Cattin has reduced in swelling, but he will not be jumping fences anytime soon. The badly broken ankle of Time Warp has reduced in swelling, and he is still popping his pain pills. The bowed tendon of Smoking Gears has mostly healed, and in our fields he is a prankster. Olympic Spirit has left her boyfriend Califo, and she is now dating Red River Valley. Califo is not happy with this sudden turn of events. And Governor Lee undid the latch to his gate, and I never realized what a beautiful mover he is. Governor Lee is pure poetry on 4 legs, and it took more than 30 minutes to catch him.

Enjoy your cold and clear Friday, and be sure to hug your horses. Home is where the big screen is. The Kings play in Detroit tonight, and you must bring a sense of humor to the couch...

    Joe

Huckabee: he's a dinosaur...part of the Grand Confederacy--I guess no one let him know that THEY LOST THE WAR. Very scary. It's a condition mostly found among Old White Guys.

Some generation it'll be over. But when? And that he wraps his cause in The Confederate Flag (which, IMHO, belongs in museums and certainly, if flown, belongs BENEATH the American flag)eats road kill and if truth be acknowledged, eats the very animals that carried the South into battle, and were killed by the thousands on the battlefields.

Ach: People (and I use this term loosely) like this make me think about getting trained in the use of a gun, and I hate guns too....

So, Catherine, be careful in your forays against this idiot and his syncophants. Weird stuff happens Down South. And I don't want it happening to you or Timmie (That's his name, right??)

    Be safe. j

    Good Morning Famblee

We wake to sadness this morning with the loss of another valiant warrior horse, a famblee member's beloved Oliver and the murder of a beloved horse. For those who have suffered loss, I am so sorry and know the grief you feel.

I do not understand animal abuse. I just don't get it because my furkids are my life. Whoever shot Rocky will likely harm a human down the road. I hope they get this person.

    Prayers for Luigi's recovery.

Catherine....your recipe sounds delicious. I bet you had a fun time with research and development on that one. Wish I had been there although I'm more a Barbabrew kinda gal.

OK....I've got some good news. The Big Boned Gals arrived safely yesterday afternoon at MHR and are settling in nicely. They all have pretty big bellies so there may be 3 baby drafts on the way and YES, they will be on MareStare. There is an hysterical video of their arrival. Hay Pennsylvania, our horses need your help!

As Shelly and Debra have repeatedly told us, we cannot get these bills to a full vote without MORE COSPONSORSHIP. Pennsylvania is a big Ag state, and we are fighting a tough lobby. WILL YOU HELP US?

We are Team Barbaro Pennsylvania. Our team is now close to 60 strong and we’d like more of you to join us! We have 9 legislators who have not co-sponsored the bills. We are experiencing success! We do need more assistance, however...

There are 3 or 4 names to call, fax or email each day Monday through Thursday. It takes but a few moments to speak for the HORSES!

I am the Pennsylvania State Leader. Please email me if you’d like to join our Team Barbaro Pennsylvania and get on the emailing list for targeting our PA Senator and Reps who have not yet agreed to support the anti-slaughter legislation. You can email me at Lor's Email Addy.

    OUR HORSES NEED YOUR HELP!

A few minutes each day for our Horses it not much to ask.

PALERMO -- Max will never be able to thank Carol-Terese Naser for saving his life.
He will never be able to thank Priscilla Presley for adopting him and giving him a new home.

Then again, Max is a 3-year-old bay horse.

Max and his brother, Merlin, a magnificent chocolate-colored creature, were scheduled to be slaughtered -- along with four other horses in their family in QuŽbec -- last summer.

Naser, who has had horses of her own since she was a child, stepped into action and bought all six horses just days before they were to be taken to the slaughterhouse.

"If we hadn't done this when we did, they'd all be long gone," said Naser, of Palermo. "They would've been (killed) in QuŽbec."

Naser and her friend Cathy Cleaveland found out soon enough that it wasn't easy -- or cheap -- to care for six horses. So they decided to start fundraising.

"We sent T-shirts to celebrities we knew were passionate about animals," Cleaveland said. "We requested they autograph the shirt, then send it back. We were going to auction them."

Country crooner Alan Jackson, former Catwoman Julie Newmar and "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" host Ty Pennington, among others, signed and sent back the shirts for auction, Naser said.

Nothing, however, prepared Naser or Cleaveland for the phone call that would change Max's and Merlin's lives.

"I answered the phone and Priscilla Presley was on the other end," Cleaveland recalled with a laugh. "I didn't believe it at first."

Yes, that Priscilla Presley -- former wife of The King, Elvis Presley.

An animal lover, Presley told the women she wanted to adopt Max and Merlin to give them a permanent home at Graceland, the nearly 14-acre spread, 23-room mansion in Memphis that Elvis shared with Priscilla and their daughter until the couple's divorce in the early 1970s.

"I have always had a bond with horses," Presley said in a telephone interview Wednesday. "Elvis gave me my very first horse. It was the horses that made Graceland home to us."

Presley, who called herself "the kid who had to rescue all the animals" growing up, said that when she received the T-shirt from Naser and Cleaveland, the story of the near-slaughter struck her.

"It haunted me," Presley said. "I couldn't sleep because I couldn't imagine anyone wanting to do that."

Presley and Naser stayed in close contact over the next several months to work out the details of the horses' arrival at the national landmark.

"(Presley) is smart when it comes to animals," Naser said. "She knows the kind of care these horses need. She really gets it."

Max arrived at the estate Jan. 10 -- two days after what would have been Elvis Presley's 73rd birthday, Naser said.

Merlin will follow in the spring.

Presley, who called Naser's saving act "an unbelievable labor of love," said it is her desire to educate people about horse slaughter, including spreading the word about a national call-in day Tuesday to permanently ban the practice.

"I know the bill (to ban the practice) is stalled right now and I have no idea why," Presley said. "I would urge everyone to call their senators and U.S. representatives about this."

For Naser's part, she hopes people would view the equines as more than just standard farm animals.

"(Max and Merlin) are a symbol of horses who escaped the slaughter," she said.

To play devil's advocate - what happens to all the horses that would have been slaughtered if and when this law is passed? I dispise the thought of a slaughter, but I also fear that all the horse rescue operations will be overwhelmed with neglected and starving horses. Who pays the bill for all of these "rescued" horses? BTW - we have a rescued horse, and he was about 250-300 pounds underweight when we got him. He is now a healthy thriving loved member of our family.

Horses are also slaughtered for dog food and glue, which is absolutely senseless in my opinion. Horses are beautiful and useful animals.

Horses are slaughtered because the American public does not know this practice exists. This is an industry with a quick cash turnover for the owner, slaughter dealer and slaughterhouse. It is an easy way to dispose of unwanted horses for irresponsible or unaware owners. No questions asked, the slaughter dealer simply comes to picks up the horses. For more information on the Six Horses Saved, including Max, visit the Six Horses Saved web site at www.freewebs.com/sixhorsessaved. Click on the section "About Horse Slaughter."
My background includes work in the area of animal welfare investigations into horse slaughter. In Maine, unwanted camp horses, Quarter Horses, work horses and others are quickly transported to the Richelieu Quebec slaughter plant in less than 5 hours. The plant slaughters on Monday mornings, so we see the trucks transporting horses through Maine on Sunday afternoons. The method in which horses are trnaported and then killed is just horrific. There is nothing humane about this sort of death. Horsemeat is shipped to Europe and Japan. Currently, there are no horses slaughtered in the U.S., however, the Illinois plant may reopen. The public has no idea about the reality of horse slaughter, and anyone who justifies the practice is in denial regarding the great cruelty involved. Or making fast money on these innocent animals. There is also little connection between starving horses and this industry, for the slaughter dealers look for well fed horses, not thin animals. If you have ever sold a horse to a dealer or taken one to an animal auction, the oddes are high that your horse was taken to slaughter. We are trying to pass the bill mentioned by Priscilla Presley, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. It languishes in Congress. It is up to the American public to decide the future fate of our horses. In essence, it is up to you. Thank you.

    Hi everyone

A heads up on a new fundraising campaign. The Ky Equine Humane Center is having a horse show in Shelbyville, KY on March 29, 2008. All proceeds from the horse show will go to KyEHC.

I am soliciting donations from FOBs to sponser a class. The cost of sponsoring a class is $250.00.

Please go to the Discussion Board, Horse Rescues, Fundraising for KyEHS for more detail. Or you can search by message number (18926.1).Or you can e-mail me privately and I will get you the necessary information.

    Have a great weekend

    She's Got It.

    Dear Sirs,

I want you to know that, I have lost all faith in the AVMA.

Your rebuttal to the HSVMA newsletter, is feel-good nonsense.

Have you heard the phrase "losing the forest for the trees"? This means that someone is paying so much attention to a small detail that he or she is missing the big picture.

I will bet that the horses that go to slaughter don't view themselves as a "small detail" and nor should you. You have sworn an oath to "not do harm" and you have done so much more harm than good.

Your lack of compassion for our animals is appalling. I am looking forward to the day that I will be able to choose a vet that is not associated with your organization.

    Sincerely,

Extra Friday 1/18 National Target List (HAHS)

IMPT UPDATE - IMO - please add this link to what you send out/talk about today and from now on until further notice - a new Press Release / WHITE PAPER from Vets for Equine Welfare [thanks Gail!]:

To view “Horse Slaughter – Its Ethical Impact and Subsequent Response of the Veterinary Profession”, click here: [link provided at DB thread referenced at the end of this message]

PREFACE/Heads-Up per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/ request: Ask the Senators who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Senator Mary Landrieu, sponsor and promoter of the Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to their two latest antislaughter releases AND JUST-RELEASED WHITE PAPER are in the DB thread below.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

    800-828-0498

    800-459-1887

    800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux breaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE NEW SUGGESTION/CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE Prior HS History above the LIST OF SENATORS below.)

    1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

    2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

    3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

    4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

    5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

    Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Friday 1/18/08) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311; ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the current/new ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

Prior HS History: All voted for Ensign-Byrd in 2005; and Sen. Nelson cosponsored S 1915 last Congress.

    NEBRASKA
    Senator Chuck Hagel

    720 Hart Senate Office Building

NEVADA Note - on THIS call - as distinct from the ABR strategy call - to Sen. Reid - you are talking to him as a Senator from NV, not in his Senate Leadership position - be sure to ask him to cosponsor. (Note this is his regular office phone number, while the ABR list provides his Senate Leadership number.)

    Senator Harry Reid
    Fax: 202-224-7327 Phone: 202-224-3542

IF you're done with the ABR Strategy list & State directions & the above list and STILL want to do more - you can go to ABR/DB message 15321.10 [link at DB thread below] for a target list from AWI/SAPL.

Please post at this DB thread

and/or here at ABR Comments if you have any further info about these legislators; and please post any feedback re your contacts today.

THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR THE HORSES! GO GET EM.

Do it for GEORGE and JOHN and BARBARO

    the power of love

the whispers come in all degrees
    off the track ,now empty

but now i have seen and felt
    the weight of experience
in the loss that i hold close, now
and i am wondering if you feel that too

i have faced that sense of utter disbelief with the ending that
    befell us all
from that day in may to january 29,2007

there is a way beyond ego of my own suffering

to reflect on the recent loss of someone's dear cat OLIVER AND NAYLA--

the love poured onto the family cat and the rescued horse

they fought so hard to live
their courageous and yes..elegance in their quiet suffering
almost like they by passed their pain
    to show their love

    perhaps
their journey points out to me
    once more
how much the loved administered upon them
nurtured them and me in turn
    nothing was in vain

it was just the right thing to do

    this love given unconditionally
    >seemed to grow their strength in being able to cross over so much easier
    ..i suspect
and have the chance to finish what ever they had to do
that everyone of you silently folded them ,as many others
    -

    this year
    in to your history too
    this unfolding story.
which is part of Barbaro;s story

    .in which so many
,including myself , have found new definition of self

there is also a quiet glory
    of those who continue giving
    whether they post or not
    i can feel them ..
    all of them
their imprint is in the inflection of the spaces where they began --months ago

    the calls keep coming
    horses keep being rescued
money is raised for those in need
and Barbaro;s anniversary fund grows larger
    the thousands add up

you wrap your arms around the little figure
    trusting you
in the embrace of the moment
you wrap her ankles in splints and she gains strength
to face whatever fate gives her

    this love that Barbaro grows
    seems to me
    everlasting
    in my own life
    friendships born, lessons learned
    sacrifices made
    that melt my heart

this love does not live for self alone
but seems to exist as one with the life around

the growth of that word ''compassion'' for the voiceless along the way
has led me to find a part of myself

    maybe an awareness
    of what could be called
a higher sense of giving loving
    '' service''
    the word jumping out
in the sorrow of seeing a tortured starving horse or
    those awful..trucks
filled with dis-believing innocent victims of our corruption-- horses
    being sent to slaughter..

there is a fulfillment in re living
    his love of running
down that stretch of famous track
knowing how he fought in his stable
to retain his dignity and prowess
    eating his grass
with relish to the very last moment
    maybe for her too
to show her that he had the fight to live

    to uphold his will
the attainment of this quiet fulfillment of having been given the chance to serve
and to listen with new attention
to the heartbeat of the voiceless
so often ignored in the past

    one gives courage
    to the other
    and it all multipliesfor me
it is a pure joy to be blessed with such a tapestry

the unexpected sweep of a his and this
    history

i can expect this vision to encompass all i do
    so tonight
i send out another patch to the quilt

    it is deep blue
laced in the woof of silver and gold threads
bordered by green and pink velvet ribbon

there is a distinct scent of a fresh kentuycky day
the wind blowing through the fields where he now runs whole and free

    i rejoice
i rejoice even in the deep well of never ending grief
to know that after months of mourning
.i releae the pain into the fabric of his greatness

feeling the dirt of the track hoof prints filled now
with rose petals flying into the wind it is a gorgeous night here '
fresh gentle snow falls to cover that which seems dark and ugly

    so i whisper
    love will come find you
just to remind you of who you are
oh love it will not forsake you
    not break you
take and hold what you got

that is the thing about love..
    with every bit of giving
to those who he left behind
    ,his greatness will multiply
deep into this night and that night
he first floated above us all
    i thank everyone
..for all they have endured and fought for and called for
    IN HIS NAME
    .
    .it is a great
    beginning
    to his ever growing power
    oh yes that love
    shines
as he looks down upon you and asks
    will you hear me?
    can you hear me?

Martita, dearest one, there is cold weather finally coming in so the quilting circle is going to start sewing indoors now.

The overstuffed chintz chair with the blue/green chenille throw awaits you as you come in from your day...and the soup simmers on the stove, the aroma of freshly baked bread meanders out from the kitchen...and the soft nickering of rescued horses greet you from the stable as you come into the house.

The cats are curled up in front of the fireplace and they open sleepy eyes to greet you and bid you welcome to the circle. The chair is so inviting as you quietly nestle yourself into its comforting depths...you wrap the chenille throw around you as the fire warms you down to your soul...and for just one brief second, you hear a familiar gentle nicker from hevvin...

    Welcome home.

    Good night, dear one.

    crosspost from DB (excerpt)

Will it never end? Hoping the "survivor" is found and that there is some kind of "justice" for these two souls. This is the Humane Society that Longmeadows Rescue Ranch is part of.

    Humane Society of Missouri wrote:

Two Dogs Thrown Off Union Overpass
One Dies as a Result of Serious Injury

This week the Humane Society received horrific news from the St. Louis City Police Department that a concerned citizen walking to his car witnessed two dogs that were thrown from the Union Avenue overpass.

The two dogs, a Pit Bull and large Golden Retriever or Akita mix, fell approximately 30 ft. onto the west side of the Union Avenue Receiving parking lot, which is just south of I-70.

It is with heavy hearts that we report that the pit bull has died. He suffered multiple fractures in both front legs, nerve damage, was unable to walk and was in nearly uncontrollable pain. After detailed consultation and examination of the dog, Humane Society veterinarians determined that it was in the dog’s best interest that it be humanely euthanized.

Although the other dog was able to run away, we are concerned that it may also have suffered serious injury. Our Rescues and Investigations team, along with Animal Control and the St. Louis City Police Department will continue to look for the missing dog.

We are offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person/persons responsible for this abuse. For more information please click here. [link at DB post]

Medical care for the injured Pit Bull and costs for the continuing investigation are funded by our Chi Chi Fund, which is dedicated to investigating, healing and preventing animal abuse. Please help us prevent this grievous type of abuse and suffering by giving to the Chi Chi Fund. [link provided at DB post]

    Barbaro's little brothers progressing
    By GLENYE CAIN OAKFORD
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Nearly one year after Barbaro's death, the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner's two full brothers, 2-year-old Nicanor and an unnamed yearling, are doing well. But it's too soon to say whether either will be able to fill his brother's shoes.

Nicanor is in training with the Stephens Thoroughbreds operation of John and Jill Stephens in Morriston, Fla., the same place Barbaro received his early training. The colt has progressed to 1o1/4-mile gallops, according to John Stephens, and could have his first breeze about mid-February. When he's ready, Stephens will ship him on to trainer Michael Matz.

"He's physically a very attractive colt," Stephens said. "Conformationally, he's pretty correct, and substance-wise, he has some scope. He doesn't have the length of leg Barbaro had at this point. Barbaro was gawkier at this stage, and Nicanor is a more attractive horse at this point.

"But none of that means anything until they can outrun something in the afternoon," he added.

Gretchen Jackson, who will head to Florida to see Nicanor again in about a week, also takes a cautious view.

"There's such heavy expectation put on him," she said. "You try not to, and you just hope he does something."

Barbaro's youngest sibling, a 2007 Dynaformer colt, is still gamboling around a pasture with about a dozen other yearlings at Mill Ridge Farm in Lexington. He is powerfully built but, like Nicanor and Barbaro, is of good size for his age.

"You can certainly see some Carson City coming out in him, because he has that muscling and stature," said Mill Ridge manager Bayne Welker. Their dam, La Ville Rouge, is by Carson City. "But his markings are more similar to Barbaro's than Nicanor's, because he has that star and a snip."

And the youngest brother appears to have some of the family charisma, Welker said.

"He is a spirited young horse who always feels good," he said. "He kind of has that aura around him."

For now, both bay colts are living out of the limelight, and that's good, say the horsemen overseeing their development.

"The Jacksons have been in this long enough to know there's no pressure," Stephens said. "We're all keeping it low-key, and Nicanor is getting to be a horse just like any other horse."

La Ville Rouge is not in foal this year, but plans call for her to be bred back to Dynaformer in February.

"I hope for the Barbaro fan base and for the Jacksons' sake that, somewhere down the line, La Ville Rouge catches lightning in a bottle a second time," Welker said.

Hope they find the person and throw him from the dam overpass. Unbelievable, I don't think this world will last much longer. God will stop this!

I believe the article is from Daily Racing Form.

Luigi will barely walk today. I really think he is terrified of having the cone on. He slept and ate fine, but the minute we put the cone on him, he just stands still.

MJ...I've always said, if I EVER had to put a cone on Murphy....he'd need 'doggy psychology'!! I feel so badly for Luigi....:( It is just frightening him a little bit and I am hoping as time goes on, he will become used to it and then it will be coming OFF:) ohhhh, MJ!!! He will be such a HAPPPPPPYYYY BOYYYYY!!!! :)

At least Luigi 'freezes' in his doggy tracks, and stands still.....Murphy, I'm afraid, would go 'bezonkers' and hurt himself and 'alotsa' stuff in the house, too!!

:/ I forgot to say, Robyn...I hope your head cold doesn't last too long!!! Hope you'll be feeling better VERY soon! Drat those horrid head colds!!:(

I'll be checking out the pictures of the 'Girls':)....the BIG GIRLS:) later on tonight or tomorrow...been an awfully long day today! Happy they have arrived safely at their 'new' home:) Hope those 'toikles' keep a safe distance!!!

Lyn & Nancy:) WOW!!! :) We are a strong and mighty group of peeples....!!! Barbaro knew what he was doing, when he 'hoof-picked' us!!! :)

I read the update about Nicanor and the little guy:) Some of us call the little guy, 'Dynasoar' until he gets his 'real' name:):)

All those Dynaformer/LaVille Rouge kidddds are intelligent/BIG/and GOOD LOOKERS:) Eager to learn, too!! I don't care what they do in the way of 'lighting up the tracks' with speed or winnnnns....I just want them to be happy kidddds and SAFE:) And in my opinion, I don't feel any of them need to be concerned about 'filling their older brother's shoes'....heck, they have shoes of thier own to grow into and fill:)

    MJ,
For a couple years I belonged to a yahoo group, K9KidneyDiet. One of the moderators developed a special diet for furkids that pretty much prevented additional stones (CaOx) forming in the bladder if it was followed exactly. I believe it was called the fuzzer food diet.

I hope Luigi starts feeling better, poor little guy.

    Good evening, all -

    ### Robyn Hoffmann, I sure hope your head cold goes away soon, and strongly recommend chicken soup with as much cayenne pepper as you can stand. I know it works here!
    ### MJ - Sorry about Luigi's misery with the cone, but I couldn't help but laugh. Our big old dog Teela, (a pitcross who lived to be 16!), had a cone once, when she was spayed, and the tragic looks... Oh, my. In a way, though, it's good that he freezes in place. It'll keep him quiet for a few days, while those tissues heal and knit.
    ### - CJ - I received that on email today - (the article about the dogs thrown off the overpass) -and was just horrified. Poor babies. As an advocate for pitbulls and bully breeds in general, I, like many, had hoped that the Vick case would have a positive effect. It has, of course, in that many more people are now aware of these dogs as victims, not monsters. Unfortunately, there have been a series of "copycat" attacks on dogs, based in some cases on the details of the Vick crimes, and in others on the unholy realms of very dark imaginations. It's just ugly, and dovetails with the ghastly crap we see here all the time. How in the world anyone thinks they have a right to cause anguish to sentient beings is something I will never, never comprehend.

Ah, well, it's a hard life, and all we can do is be kind. Thank the universe for MHR and those Big Boned Gals, and for Our Mims, and for each and every one of you, who try, in the teeth of unbelievable odds, to make the sum total of goodness in the world larger each day.

    Have a good evening, all.

    - Jean
