Barbaro Updates: 475

updates are now here.

Update 2930: A chilly update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:

It is cold this Thursday morning and the wind chill ins -5 degrees. The people seem to be bothered by this weather more than the horses. The Tapeta track is riding great and we are so lucky to have this to train on in the winter. The main dirt track would be like training on a beach. This is also the time of year when we take stock in the past year and look forward to the coming year at the same time. We have had several brushes with reality this past year. A few of our horses have gone on to be riding horses. Real Lace and Mass Romantic were claimed and Red Aspen went to Florida and ran two really great races. All in all we have been very lucky and had no life threatening injuries. We take great care to pay attention to what might cause harm to these animals but accidents can happen. We realize that we are fortunate to have made it through the year without major harm. Sometimes losing one of our horses can be like giving up a family pet. I miss them when they are gone and their personalities are never forgotten. Looking forward to the coming year we have a lot of youngsters with promise. Kitty and Molly are very close to racing and both are very interesting individuals. Paris and Rocky are really progressing well, and of course the new babies like Lucky and Bubble Gum are really learning and enjoying things so far. Veiled Reference has showed a lot of promise and Not A Fling ran a great race and finished third last week. Two of Wands showed promise in her first start and I can't wait to see her figure it all out! She is a tough cookie. Powdered Donut and a Lion Hearted filly have just come in and seem eager to train and learn. Luke is still with us and talks to me every night for his dinner. What more could I want? Red Aspen will be coming back from Florida to start the next phase of her life (being a mom). I can't wait to see her and give her a mint or two for her efforts. Who's Happy will be back after her winter break and she should be tough to beat. We look forward to this year with hopeful anticipation and encourage all of you to enjoy it with us.

Update 2929: HBOs Barbaro documentary won a 2007 media Eclipse Award: HBO Sports Wins Eclipse Award, the following are excerpts:

"HBO Sports is honored to accept this very prestigious award," said Ross Greenburg, president of HBO Sports. "We want to thank Gretchen and Roy Jackson (Barbaro's owners) for their generous support on the project, and of course Barbaro for reminding the world of its love of animals."

and

"The film came together after we met the Jacksons," said Margaret Grossi, who produced the documentary. "We recognized that they were making a genuine effort to save the horse. They never veered in their conviction and never relinquished hope. They handled all of the ups and downs with a lot of class."

Update 2928: It was a chilly morning this morning at Sam Houston Race Park, probably late twenties warming up to mid thirties through the early part of the day. I did call Tim to get the temperature in Fair Hill, he said it was nine degrees and they were only going to shedrow the horses! We had ten sets, so we were busy. A few of the later sets went to the gate, all went nicely. There were a couple of spills on the track, colder weather makes you less agile and the horses more alert. Oh well, I survived anyway so not a bad start to the day.

Update 2927: Heavy rain is forecast for the Santa Anita area in the next few days and concern remains regarding the integrity of the drainage of the Cushion Track: Santa Anita Track Dilemma Not Over.

If you can spare an hour listen to this: TRRN: Person and Race of the Year. Congratulations to Bev Strauss!

Please keep calling and writing.

Hiya, FsOB! I haven't even turned on the TV to find out how cold it is here on the banks of the Thames, but the windows on the front door are frosted. Yikes! Hope all of you and your animals are safe & warm this AM. Here's to a productive day! Can I possibly be first? RMH

Good Thursday morning FOBs

I almost can't believe that I had to scrape ice off the windshield of the car this morning. That's the first time I ever had to use the scraper that I brought along when we moved here to the sunshine state from PA. I think I'm going to regret not covering the shrubs last night. I didn't think the temperature was going to drop so low.

Try to stay warm everyone!!

MORNING POST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI

STRATEGY FOR THURSDAY JANUARY 3

It’s great to see everyone getting back in the groove with renewed determination to succeed. May 2008 see all of your dreams come true and may we celebrate the end of horse slaughter once and for all!!

Our voices have been heard and the support has grown. When we look back over last year, we should all be very proud of our accomplishments. There are no slaughter houses operating in this country, awareness has been heightened and, because of you, many thousands of horses have been saved. We are beginning 2008 with 191 cosponsors in the House and 38 cosponsors in the Senate. We are actually in a better position because some of the big, time consuming issues like the Farm Bill are out of the way. There will now be time for other issues to be addressed when Congress returns later this month.

The strategy will remain the same until Congress comes back or until we are told otherwise. We will keep the pressure on the leadership to get S311 put on the calendar quickly or to support any legislation that contains language to end horse slaughter and the transportation of American horses to slaughter.

It’s been a long, sometimes discouraging road, however, you have all worked so hard to get this far. As we move forward, let us never forget Barbaro’s legacy and what brought us all together. He left us a task to complete…..let’s get this done!!!!

We are BARBARO's VOICE.....let it be heard!!

Hi Harriette,

I'm in Palm Bay, which is just south of the Space Center. The ice is a definite first for me. It's crazy weather. 2 days ago it was HOT. We were all wearing t-shirts, now we're needing winter coats.

Good morning all, very cold here in Pa today, good day to stay in and make the calls.

Stay warm, and have a good day.

Posted by: Carol Nichols at January 3, 2008 12:41 PM

24 degrees here in Conroe, probably about 27 or 28 in Houston. I think that's the lowest it has gotten this winter.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri in SE TX at January 3, 2008 12:57 PM

#### It's very cold here in KY too.Maybe 5-10 above..I just came from feeding the horses and I can't feel my hands and feet despite two pair of gloves and wool socks with boots. The best investment I have made...electric water buckets!!
No more ice filled buckets to fool with.
Worth every penny!!! Horses don't like really cold water, this keeps their water just the way they like it!

EWWWWW: -3 here in the Syracuse area. The greyhounds raced in and out following breakfast. We'll get up to 13 maybe. We should be used to this...global warming has spoiled us terribly.

(TODAY just showed what the fruit farmers in FL do when it gets so cold...they turn on the water works and put a coating on ICE on the citrus or strawberries. Who figured that one out?)

Happy calling to all.

Very cold the last 2 days here in South Texas. Yesterday it was 19 and today it's 24. Janice, I move from Philly to Ft Lauderdale 30 years ago and then to Texas. The house in FL had no heat and I remember many cold snaps that far south. Hope you stay warm. The good news is it never lasts. Going to do my emails for today. Bless the horses and dogs and all God's creatures.

##

Good Thursday Morning, ABR Famblee:)

My stinkin' faxes are sent....to the 'Famous Five' + Two:)

I watched Nightly News last night and marveled at how they turn the water on, get those precious strawberries to a 'toasty' 32 degrees while the outside temperature hovers around 20! That is pretty cool....both literally and scientifically!

I hope y'all in those freezing temperatures will be able to maintain your electricity and stay warm!! Be safe outside walking your furbabies!!

The rain which is forecast to be 'all day driving' along with mega winds hasn't arrived here in these foothills just yet..I think the 'worst' is forecast for tomorrow...but they are calling for FEET of snow in the Sierras and INCHES of rain elsewhere...we need it, so I'll try NOT to complain!!!

I hope y'all have a WONDERFUL day today!!!

Joan Roya: Get well soon, Fren...I miss reading your words here..'alotsa'!! (((((((joan)))))))

Renee:) Glad to see you back!!! Always happy to read what you've got to say here:)

Laurie H:) Happy Bart enjoys those Doritos:) Good for him!!!

Speaking of kit-kats....I recorded the PBS presentation the other evening with the Lipizzaner stallions...y'day afternoon, I hit 'fast fwd' button so I could watch...our Kit-Kat, Seymoure was laying in the middle of livingroom floor....the music began and he lay there WATCHING and WATCHING...THENNNN....got up off the floor and stood on hind feets and touched the TV screen....This cat NEVER pays attention to TV..not even with Animal Planet on...daughter and I decided in a previous life, he must have been a Barn Cat in Vienna and those horseys were his frens:)

Must zoooom!!! :(

Hay Fambleeeeee

Congratulations, Bev Strauss!!!

It was a balmy 42 degrees when I arrived at work, which is warmer than it has been midday for the past two weeks or so. Forecast is 50's today, tomorrow and Saturday, with cooldown Sunday and snow overnight through Monday. Not atypical, but hearing about ice on windshields in FL is just CRAZY. A friend who lives in NE FL called me yesterday and asked what I thought about blanketing his horses. He said people there really don't think too much about it. It was very cold in his region, much colder than his QH's are accustomed to, so I said yeah, probleee should. He said "great. Now where do I find blankets??" Mr. Gore, what have you DONE to our weather???? :)

So sorry to hear of Joan Roya's illness, and her little pubbeeee's injury. Sending healing thoughts to both

gotta jet

Love to all

*************************************************

Thursday, January 3rd... There is a website called Baen, and it is run by a very nice lady named Debbie. Recently Debbie put up a Tbfriends logo on Baen. Nora lives in Sacramento, and she saw the logo. Nora gave me a call, and now she is the excited new owner of an older thoroughbred mare who was in serious trouble. The mare came from a horrible situation in Stockton. A big Thank You to Jennifer Wright for providing the transportation. And a big Thank You to both Debbie of Baen, and Nora of Sacramento. A combined effort. Saving the life of a loving thoroughbred mare.

Glory (yes her name is Glory) lives in the town of Martinez. After reading yesterday about horses in need, Glory calls to say well okay then. She will gladly help. A young quarter horse colt who is not broke to ride was living in Lodi. He was scheduled for a January auction. Once again a big Thank You to Jennifer Wright for providing the transportation. The colt is now with Glory, who later phones to say he has settled right in. An appointment has been made for castration.

An older gelding with a cropped tail was taken from his not so nice home in Grass Valley to his beautiful new pasture in Placerville. A big Thank You to Angela Youngblood for providing the transportation.

An older thoroughbred gelding with bad feet and a huge knee was taken from his not so nice home in West Sacramento and delivered to his very nice new home in Capay Valley. A big Thank You to Stephanie Diaz for providing the transportation.

You gotta love the internet. And you gotta love those who read Tbfriends. I ask for help with horses in trouble, and the little cell phone rings all day long. Twice I had to recharge. There are 11 more homes waiting for hopeful horses. I am incredibly grateful.

To our team of horse haulers, who when I phone they hardly hesitate. Welcome Stephanie Diaz. Welcome Ryan Andrews. Also Jennifer Wright. Holly Meeks. Hoofbeats Horse Transportation. Angela Youngblood. Gary Duncan. Georgia Hartman. Without your help there would be no Tbfriends.

We are constantly warned about this upcoming storm. A doozy. We could have 60 mile an hour winds. 5 inches of rain. Right now, at 6:20 on a Thursday morning, it is very still outside. Horses begin to shuffle, waiting for breakfast. The chores are endless, and I must get started. Have the best Thursday ever, and be sure to hug your horses. The Kings won in New York last night. Once again, anything is possible...

Joe

Meet Adam. He comes to us very hungry from a feed lot in Elk Grove. Adam has a racing tattoo which says he is just 6 years old.

Top right is the yellow cat Squirrel, who has lived with us since 1997.

We have been begging Yolo County to fill the holes on our street, and yesterday they finally came. I have watched as joggers fall into these holes and disappear forever. But now we can drive down the street without blowing a tire.

Bottom right: 111 horses on our ranch, and they all need a bath.

Reporting here and present - sent faxes today instead of calling. For me, it is easier to get the ABR talking points in, in writing, than to try to get the aides to take detailed notes. When I call, generally I just register my position rather than going into detail - unless there is "new news" that I want to call to the Senator's attention.

Here's a great feelgood story for the New Year - horse lost on Christmas day with all his tack after dumping rider on the trail, is now safe at home again. Read all about it (and see some pics of an amazingly gorgeous cremello with 2 blue eyes) here:

Burst into tears with a big "THANK GOD" (and I'm supposed to be an agnostic, haha) when I read this info at the HAHS group site this morning: BLU IS SAFE AT HOME!!! crossposting from HAHS Yahoo Group site:

NetPosse.com Idaho Alert - Blu was found and recovered Dec. 29, 2007

Blu was found less than a mile from home after traveling a lot of miles since Christmas.

Linda is thrilled he is home safe. Read more on his webpage [referenced in post linked above; text of update, see post 8 of that thread].

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

I am so sorry for your loss. Tamir had the best possible life with you and loved you for it.
I just know that Tamir was welcomed at the Bridge by all the furkids of the FOBs. What a wonderous greeting that was.

Opening day at Gulfstream Park today and it is frigid. Over Enough just moved to his new digs with his buddy yesterday, from the barn to new outside run in sheds in huge green pastures, he is thrilled but cold, blankets on all horses here in South Florida.

Sorry to hear about Tamir joining Barbaro.

Interesting that Flying Filly was searching for news about Jennys on Radio after Susan in Saratoga first saw her last year. She is running tomorrow after just running 10 days ago. Safe trip for you girl and we will find a way to get you retired.

HBO Barbaro Documentary wins 2007 Media Eclipse Aware

BREAKING NEWS - LOOKEE HERE (is this old news yet?) This just came to my email from my Barbaro google alert. YIPPEE!

http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/editorial/news/article.cgi?id=10201

HBO Sports wins Eclipse Award

HBO Sports has won the 2007 Media Eclipse Award in the National Television Feature programming category for its documentary "Barbaro," which aired on June 6, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) announced Thursday.

The one-hour program documented the life of 2006 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Barbaro, who captured the public's imagination through his significant accomplishments on the racetrack and his tremendous courage and desire to live following his injury in the Preakness S. (G1) that ultimately led to his death last January.

"HBO Sports is honored to accept this very prestigious award," said Ross Greenburg, president of HBO Sports. "We want to thank Gretchen and Roy Jackson (Barbaro's owners) for their generous support on the project, and of course Barbaro for reminding the world of its love of animals."

In chronicling "Barbaro," HBO used archival footage of the Thoroughbred as a weanling and his triumphant early races, and supported it with revealing interviews with the Jacksons throughout the film. The program was broadened with a history of life changing episodes from trainer Michael Matz, assistant Peter Brette, jockey Edgar Prado, and Dr. Dean Richardson, the chief of surgery at the John D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center. HBO also provided a detailed examination of events surrounding Barbaro's injury during the Preakness, the role of the medical staff at Pimlico Race Course and the attendants who helped Barbaro into the horse ambulance after the race.

The main focus of the documentary, though, was on Barbaro's owners.

"The film came together after we met the Jacksons," said Margaret Grossi, who produced the documentary. "We recognized that they were making a genuine effort to save the horse. They never veered in their conviction and never relinquished hope. They handled all of the ups and downs with a lot of class."

Greenburg and Rick Bernstein were executive producers of "Barbaro." The documentary was written by Frank Deford. Mary Carillo, who wrote the original treatment, was story editor. Liev Schreiber was the narrator. Original music was scored by Brian Keane.

Barbaro documentaries also accounted for the two honorable mentions in the National Television Features programming category. One went to HorseRacing TV (HRTV) for "Barbaro: A Race to Save His Life," which aired on June 3. Amy Zimmerman was executive producer. Honorable mention also went to NBC Sports for "Barbaro: A Nation's Horse," which aired on May 5. Rob Hyland was the producer.

Judges in the National Television -- Features category were Rob Duboff of Hawk Partners Productions; Joel Feld, of New England Sports Network; and Stan Isaacs, former Newsday sports television columnist.

The 2007 Eclipse Awards ceremony will be held on January 21 at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

sometimes a critter comes into our lives who is just different in some elemental way than any other critter.
Not to say the rest aren't lovable or treasures in their own right- of course they are. But sometimes, that one just stands out. Tamir was a standout.
I'm having a hard time with his leaving, even though I had told him it was okay to. That's what you do when you love them, right? You let them go?

*** CROSS-POST FROM DISCUSSION BOARD REGARDING MICHAEL VICK- ACTION NEEDED*** PLEASE CALL!

http://forums.prospero.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=18399.1

Hi All,

Starting a new thread so we can all see this....

Forwarded from: Casey S

Hey guys! I know I'm a dog pyscho, but I need your help. Last night, the Atlanta Falcons (Michael Vick's former team) played the Saints on Monday Night Football. Almost all of the Falcons had Vicks initials and number taped onto their jerseys in support of him. Vick is a monster who drowned, hung, mutilated, starved, burned, beat, and shot countless innocent dogs, then showed little to no remorse for it in court. He is now serving 23 months in prison, which is a joke. He lied to teammates, coaches, and management about his acts. This is the phone number for the Falcons Front office:

770-965-3115

Ask for the media department and please let them know that the public will not stand for the support of this monster on National TV. Professional athletes have a responsibility to us, as they are heroes to many children, and are payed very well to represent our nations favorite sport. Please, please make the call, and forward this to as many people that you can. They won't listen to just me, but if they get enough complaints they'll have to do something about it. Again, sorry for the rant, but I'M PISSED. Thanks guys!

STRATEGY FOR FRIDAY JANUARY 4

Senate Majority Leader: Harry Reid ph: 202-224-3542 fax: 202-224-7327

Senate Minority Leader: Mitch McConnell ph: 202-224-2541 fax: 202-224-2499

Senate President Pro Tempore Robert S. Byrd ph: 202 224-3954 fax: 202-228-0002

Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin ph: 202-224-2152 fax: 202-228-0400

Assistant Minority Leader Jon Kyl Ph: 224-4521 Fax: 202-224-2207

It’s been a long, sometimes discouraging road, however, you have all worked so hard to get this far. As we move forward, let us never forget Barbaro’s legacy and what brought us all together. He left us a task to complete…..let’s get this done!!!!

We are BARBARO's VOICE.....let it be heard!!

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Shelley and Debra

Hiya, FsOB! It's awesome to see that HBO Spots will be recognized with an Eclipse Award for its film about Barbaro. I hope that this film gets released on DVD, I don't subscribe to HBO but so many of you spoke so highly of the piece when it ran on cable last Summer.

Please know that I'm very sorry to read of the passing of several FsOBs' pets over the past few days. It is so hard to experience, isn't it? Mrs. Jackson's expression "grief is the price we pay for love" is right on the mark. But our lives are truly enriched by the love of animals and their gentle spirits. Peace to each of you tonight and may your animals be safe and warm in this cold. RMH

#### To Kathyb & Harriette: Sending good thoughts to Zorro and Oliver.
To Jen, please let Joan Roya know that she is missed here. May she & her dachsund both have a speedy recovery.
Welcome back to Jennie in KY!
To Janice: I hope that your shrubs didn't get severely damaged this AM.
To Barb M: Thanks for letting us know about Over Enough's big day. I hope that Nala is doing well, too.
Has anyone heard from Kathy in SC? I hope that she and Cooper have had a good start to the New Year.
To Jonna: Thank you for giving us the blue link for Joe's blog each day. May that storm pass them by quickly. Isn't Squirrel the cat gorgeous?
To Anna in TX, Kathy K., & Elizabeth in TX: Thinking of each of you and of your beloved animals - Tamir the Cat, Clancy the Pretty Dog, and Elizabeth's Golden. May the memory of their love give you comfort at this time. Peace. ####

i was just lighting some candles for our boy while kevin has CSI on tv in the background. i heard a horse and looked up. the character with the horse was telling CSI how she lost her husband in the war and went over the edge( if you know what i mean!) was sent to a rehab center that participated in equine therapy and she said it saved her. "the horses make no judgements, just need care and they love you back( or something like that)" that they saved her and gave her a reason to live!

just thought i'd share that!

Hi Kathy S.,

Just took a peek at the DB and decided to come back here...

I haven't seen Montego or Nipper for about a week. We have had wind-chill advisories here but I have called the stable owner and Montego AND Nipper have been let in at night!

Montego's arrangement is that she is stalled at night but Nipper's owner stepped up to the plate and paid additional for him to come in during inclimate weather! (Honestly, the stable owner brings everyone in anyway during severe weather) But, I was so happy to hear Nipper is indoors.

This Fall, I offered to pay the stable owner some money for Nipper to come inside. It was so cold and raining...He said that he understood what I was thinking but that he had to go by Nipper's owner's wishes.

I understood his position and I didn't mean to put him in an awkward spot. I sat in my car and cried watching Nipper stand in the chilly rain. He has a shelter in his paddock but for some reason, was standing in the rain...

Bart hung out at a co-worker's office today until the muffins arrived! I entered the office in a radio promotion for free Perkin's muffins and so today, we were treated with our winning prize!

Bart shared in some of the prize, stretched and curled up for a winter's day nap. What a life!

He still enjoys his Kathy pats and although the need for baby food and canned food isn't necessary anymore, they are still cherished by Bart...as treats!!

Thank you Kathy! May your New Year find you happy, healthy and realizing your every possible dream!

Good night!

Anna, Tamir will always be with you. I so much believe in "signs". Please look for them from Tamir. They may bring tears but I do know from experience, they also bring smiles and laughter... music to an Angel's ear!

Take care Anna. And thank you for trusting in us to share your time of loss. We are here...

Nancy in CT - Jennys'on Radio is running in the 9th race at Aqueduct tomorrow. She just ran up the track again last week and now they are running her again. I have watched all of her races and she does not want to be there. She has dropped steadily from allowance to 50,000 claimer to 15,000 claimer (ran twice in one week last month), tomorrow she is in for 16,000. I agree with you, wish we could retire her before disaster strikes.

Interesting to see that 33 Senators are up for re-election this year including Senate leader and non co-sponsor Mitch McConnell. The article also stated EVERY Rep. is up for re-election. No vote for the horses, no vote for them.

I don't know if I'm doing the right thing posting this. I truly hope I won't offend anyone.

I used to think, "What right do I have to make the decision when my pet should leave this world"? Until my big black great dane sized dog Jose. He was a healthy boy. No symptoms of anything wrong. I was awakened at 3 AM about 2 years ago, as he fell to the floor. I knew something was very wrong. I called my vet. Got the answering machine. I called every other vet in the book, even those offering 24 hour services. Never got a call back. I was frantic, for a minute. Then I lit candles, and sat/laid on the kitchen floor with Jose, holding him, telling him it was OK to let go. He had a difficult time. He cried from time to time. After 5 hours of this, my vet called. He said he'd be right over. I told Tim that Jose just took his last breath. I still cry for Jose. I still go out and scream at the stars and night sky. No one can hear me. I live out in the middle of nowhere. I yell at those stars that it wasn't supposed to happen that way.

I share this story so that all will know that you did the right thing when you made that choice. I'd give both of my legs if I could go back and change things.

Thank you all for letting me share this. I will say a prayer for all of us tonight.

(((( Margie and Jose ))))

To Anna, Kathy, Chris, and Elizabeth, you gave your furkids the greatest gifts of all: love, security, warmth, full tummies, more love.

No matter how long how furkids stay with us, it's never long enough. What they bring to us is priceless; what they leave us with, even more priceless.

It seems appropriate to follow that with a statement of my utter disgust with and loathing for the Atlanta Falcons who support the thug Michael Vick. There's free speech, and then there's rotten taste and advocacy of immoral, inhumane, illegal behavior. Sometimes the two concepts just don't peacefully co-exist in my book.

Hopping down from the soapbox now, to say

JAKE!!!!
Welcome home! Yes, I did email your blog site. Very glad to see you here again, and I hope you post more often and bring us your unique wisdom, insights, and prose.

Please sign the "Animals Matter To Me" Petition

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=18406.1

Every day millions of animals are born to lives of unspeakable suffering. Every day millions more suffer terrible deaths.

The only way to stop this cycle of cruelty is to get an international agreement to end it.

Sadly, in many countries there is little national and no international protection for animals. Support a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare [hot link provided at DB post]

A Universal Declaration accepted by the UN would:

Recognize animals as sentient beings, capable of suffering and experiencing pain.

Recognize that animal welfare is an issue of importance as a part of the social development of nations.

Act as a catalyst for better animal welfare provisions worldwide.

The declaration would have a real, long-term impact on the welfare of billions of animals worldwide! Sign now [notlink at DB post]

Thank you for taking part in the most ambitious global initiative on animal welfare that has ever been attempted. Your signature will be one more toward the goal of 10 million signatures on the "Animals Matter to Me" petition.
