Barbaro Updates: 474

updates are now here.

Update 2926: An amusing gaff: Irish riders see old year out too soon (found on equidaily.)

Update 2925: A New Year's update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:

Happy New Year to all of our fans out there and a happy birthday to all of our horses. What a cold and windy Wednesday morning but Tim is holding up well. On Saturday morning Kitty and Molly breezed a strong half mile breaking from the starting gate. Both are doing great and should be to the races shortly. At dinner time last night both ladies seemed just fine and ready to eat. Paris Night also breezed on Saturday. This was her first breeze back after having a few problems with an abcess in her foot. She is fine now and enjoyed going an easy quarter mile. Veiled Reference is fine and she is bobbing her head for her food. She has really grown up in the last few months. Yesterday after a little hike with my running dog Zeke, we had to bring Luke in after he was jumping and speeding around the porta pad. He is sure enjoying this cooler weather. Rockin Fun breezed by himself on Saturday and is making slow but steady progress. He was ready to eat his dinner last night as always. We also have another new horse in the barn and her name is Powdered Donut. She is a grey filly who is obviously very sweet. I would like to thank her owner Marty for the beautiful flowers he brought me. He obviously knows who's good side to be on. Not a lot exciting to write about this morning. Lucky is now at Fair Hill and doing just fine. Robbie fell off him yesterday but he stood still and let Robbie jump back on. He must have seen something that he thought was very scary. Both horse and rider survived to live another day.

Update 2924: Today was very chilly! When the sun got up it didn't get much warmer and the wind picked up too. I thought galloping close to gulf coast I would only experience warm weather! Oh well. On top of that I had to wear that nasty Romo shirt. Its done. I had nine sets today, a busy morning after a couple of days off. All went well for me, not for everyone. Figuerao jumped off, or fell off, not sure. He kept hold of his horse. Another horse went down, right in front of us. He lay down for a couple of minutes, and then got up. It was an odd thing to watch, he appeared fine. A groom got slapped by a horse, I think he had to go to hospital for a check up, but is fine. Just a few odd incidents at the track this morning.

Update 2923: Marty McGee assesses the three year old crop that is based in Florida: Fertile ground for Derby prospects.

Please keep calling and writing.

Morning New Year (and therefore birthday!) skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous George and all of their wonderful frens and relations, new and old, in Equine Heaven.
Morning New Year greetings to all down below! Let's do it again...!!!

MORNING POST, SHELLEY A, DEBRA, WI

STRATEGY FOR WEDNESDAY JANUARY 2

We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and wish you all the best for the New Year. May 2008 see all of your dreams come true and may we celebrate the end of horse slaughter once and for all!!

Now it’s time to get back to work!! Our voices have been heard and the support has grown. When we look back over last year, we should all be very proud of our accomplishments. There are no slaughter houses operating in this country, awareness has been heightened and, because of you, many thousands of horses have been saved. We are beginning 2008 with 191 cosponsors in the House and 38 cosponsors in the Senate. We are actually in a better position because some of the big, time consuming issues like the Farm Bill are out of the way. There will now be time for other issues to be addressed when Congress returns later this month.

The strategy will remain the same until Congress comes back or until we are told otherwise. We will keep the pressure on the leadership to get S311 put on the calendar quickly or to support any legislation that contains language to end horse slaughter and the transportation of American horses to slaughter.

Senate Majority Leader: Harry Reid ph: 202-2224-3542 fax: 202-224-7327

Senate Minority Leader: Mitch McConnell ph: 202-224-2541 fax: 202-224-2499

Senate President Pro Tempore Robert S. Byrd ph: 202 224-3954 fax: 202-228-0002

Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin ph: 202-224-2152 fax: 202-228-0400

Assistant Minority Leader Jon Kyl Ph: 224-4521 Fax: 202-224-2207

It’s been a long, sometimes discouraging road, however, you have all worked so hard to get this far. As we move forward, let us never forget Barbaro’s legacy and what brought us all together. He left us a task to complete…..let’s get this done!!!!

We are BARBARO's VOICE.....let it be heard!!

Hiya, FsOB! I am trying to reach Paula Bacon, who served as the Mayor of Kaufman, TX, and worked so hard to get the charnel house closed there. She lost her re-election campaign by one (1) vote in May of 2007. I want to nominate her for a Profiles in Courage Award. As soon as I affirm her OK of this plan, I'll let you know in case more of you would like to write a letter of support. My thanks to CJ for setting up one of the DB threads. Peace, RMH

LET'S GO ALL OUT TO HONOR BARBARO'S LIFE & LEGACY ON JANUARY 29th, 2008...with a (hopefully) huge donation to the Laminitis Fund at New Bolton!

Padme (Lyn Gilbert) has graciously agreed to be our Treasurer for this undertaking...she has a PayPal account, and will also accept contributions by snail mail UNTIL WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23rd, which means we have less than four weeks to accomplish this! (If you're using PayPal, please try to include the 3% "processing fee" so that all your donation will be designated for the Laminitis Fund - thanks!)

Lyn will be presenting the check (hopefully on Monday, January 28th because New Bolton wants the 29th to be a quiet day, and we do respect their feelings), and I believe that Laura who created the gorgeous Barbaro ornaments will also be there to present the proceeds from the sale of the ornaments...all in all, a great day for the Laminitis Fun, and for the horses who will ultimately benefit!

Everything you need to know about this tribute can be found right here: OVER THE TOP FOR 1/29/08

Since Sen Lott resigned, do we lose him as a cosponsor?

Also AZ FOB or Daryl - Is there any hope of getting Sen Kyle as a cosponsor since he is now assistant minority leader in place of Sen. Lott?

JOE AT TB FRIENDS
1/2/08
Three Times A Lady, we called her Lady, has found a new home with a wonderful family in Dixon. Also the stallion Totally Platinum has been adopted, and he should be leaving us soon.

But now I need to tell you about horses in desperate need. If you can help, give me a call at 530-383-2120. These horses are located in California, from Fresno to Mt. Shasta. I can help with shipping arrangements. Many of the following horses are neglected, and they need immediate vet and foot care. Not to mention a truck load of groceries.

17 thoroughbreds at 11 different locations. Ages range from 2 to 25. Broke and unbroke. Injured and healthy. Most of these thoroughbreds would make good companion animals.

8 quarter horses at 6 different locations. Ages range from 4 to 20. 5 of these quarter horses are very hungry. You can count their ribs. All seem to be sane, but I have no idea as to their riding abilities.

An older gelding and I swear he is a Norman Cob, but his current owner does not know for sure. His tail is docked. He is probably 20 years old and very gentle. He is headed for a livestock auction if no one takes him.

14 mares and geldings of mixed breeds. There is a gray mare who has had foals, and a big bay mare who has had foals. The majority of these 14 horses are hungry. All 14 are headed to January auctions. Not a healthy one in the bunch.

All of the above horses are free, but we do need to meet you. The owner of a quarter horse with colored markings is asking $300.00. If you can provide a good home for this quarter horse, Tbfriends will pay the $300.00. I have a feeling he would be in deep trouble at a public auction.

On our ranch we have 110 horses. A giant storm coming.

(more to come)

####Patty in Dallas:
I met with Kyl's Legislative Counsel. She informed me of Kyl's voting record on animal legislation, very favorable, including a YES vote to stop the USDA inspections a couple years ago.
Chances are, he will vote YES! But it is imperative that Az. constituents continue to call his offices and urge him to support the bill.
The information Sherry and I have sent to the aide we worked with is now being forwarded to the Legislative Counsel. So keep calling, Az. calls count more than out of state calls, and there is a good chance for a YES vote from Kyl.
Daryl

Posted by: Daryl Smoliak at January 2, 2008 3:37 PM

All calls made. The Leetle Aides are all refreshed and enthused by their vacation time away from the cretins...

We WILL do this in 2008. Joe's post from today is so very depressing. I don't know, I do not know what keeps him going. I just think that he must be in such a state of grace, that his heart and mind are as shielded--as much as possible--from this heinous and cruel practice.

Dear God, please wrap Joe and Cathy and their helpers in Your divine love, and allow Him to ease the pain Joe and Cathy must feel every, every day, and still keep going for the benefit of the horses.

Daryl, thanks for the encouraging report re Senator Kyl.

Spoke to the IRS today about the funds issue - and she told me as long as I'm not being paid for my 'services' - I don't have to report it as any kind of income. Its money in, money out. I do make copies of all checks and currency and deposit tickets, and keep a spreadsheet as detailed as I can do it. As I said before, I have nothing to hide.

Part 2 of Joe./

Hardly a break in the action. Yesterday I showed you a photo of the starving mare Eve, and there were at least a dozen phone calls. Thank you so much for your concern, and yes I will continue to give updates. Eve is doing okay, and she eats most of her meals. Eve is in our yard, next to the house, so we can see if she needs help. With starving horses there are many issues, incuding colic and diarrhea. But so far Eve is adjusting well.

The depressed and skinny gelding Willy is doing great. He has already gained at least 50 pounds. Willy sleeps more than the normal horse. And he is taking an interest in other horses.

Gidget lost her foot, but the foot reattached, and she is feeling much better. Gidget is sore, but eating and gaining weight. The more weight Gidget gains the grouchier she becomes. Well golly gee.

Branigans has put on over 100 pounds, and he is no longer lame. Soon Branigans will go live in our fields.

We have 16 recently arrived race horses with major injuries. They are doing okay. A few will be lifetime crippled. But all 16 seem to be happy.

Oh, and did I mention a giant storm coming?

Each radio and television station is warning about high winds and 5 inches of rain. The storm should be here tonight or tomorrow morning. Oh goodie. Our new generator is ready to go. All gas cans are filled. We have stored water. Lots of batteries and bottled peaches. And by the way, a big Thank You to Lindsey for the bottled peaches.

110 horses. Having the time of our senior citizen lives. A recent horse from the race track is Dat Thing. We call him Moe. 4 times now Moe has undid the snap to his stall gate and escaped. He goes right to the haystack and munches. Moe is a good guy. He is broken down in both front legs. But already Moe is on the road to recovery. 110 horses means 110 different personalities.

Little Cora Mason came to kiss Gone Cattin, and she gave us a cheesecake from a fancy bakery in San Jose. Cora Mason asks what is it about thoroughbreds? Why are they so addicting?

Their strength and their beauty. The way they hold their heads high, even after breaking down in a race. Thoroughbreds are proud. And they are not the least bit shy about sharing their feelings. Cora Mason was right. Thoroughbreds are addicting. I have been hooked for 40 years.

Joe

Pictures from New Years Day.

The top pictures show a new gelding who came yesterday from the race track. His name is Proud Phil, and he is injured. Top left shows Proud Phil as he came off the trailer. Top rights shows Proud Phil as he gets ready for bed.

Bottom left is Pony Boy. His New Years supper included a banana.

Bottom right is horses eating as the sun goes down.

Reporting in....

Blessings to Joe and Cathy, dear ones, you are the motivation we need each day to continue.

This year my husband and I are starting a new thing at home. Before retiring each night, we will share with each other something for which we are grateful. Rather than general things, obvious things, like the fact we're grateful for each other, we are tasked to come up with specific instances in our lives and share that. We are to look for things to share with each other, things out of the norm. We're calling it Seeking the Gold, like the racehorse. I tried it yesterday and I must admit it made the usual things that get to me (like traffic) a bit more bearable as I was looking for something in that moment good, rather than being impatient.

So, I encourage all of you to look for something for which you too can be thankful, either something tangible or some act of kindness you were lucky enough to witness. Or, being thankful for the opportunity to make someone's life happier any given day.

I'm rambling, sorry. Just remember when we make these calls, and remember the horrors these horses go through, a bright thought of what is good with the world will help us get through this.

Hello Family

An FYI If you didn't get one, this was in response to my email to him.

Dear Verna,

Thank you for writing John Edwards about animal cruelty. He appreciates
that you took the time to share your thoughts and concerns. Hearing
from people all over the country about the issues important to them
strengthens our campaign.

Sen. Edwards believes that no animals should be subject to cruel and
inhumane treatment. He will study the American Horse Slaughter
Prevention Act to ensure it comports with the goal of preventing cruel
and inhumane treatment. Sen. Edwards' policies on protecting animal
welfare are on the campaign web site here:
http://johnedwards.com/issues/animal-welfare/.

Again, thank you for sharing your ideas with the campaign.

Sincerely,
The Edwards Team

Love,
Verna

That poor horse...looks like animal cruelty to me.

Alex,
What does it mean to get slapped by a horse? Sounds like a wild morning.

RIP Tatiana. I didn't realize there was a candle sight. We should keep the candles glowing. Another animal murdered because of an ill behaving human.

Now, I will admit, I didn't see/hear ALL thoses conversations....but watched/listened when people were discussing 'play-offs'....so where are they??? Anyone know??

Shelley A:) Congrats!!! Mostly though, I'm just VERY HAPPY he is HOME SAFE:):):)

Please go here and see this rescue for two HREUROPE beauties in France..I know these rescues all need help, but remember that Gretchen Jackson asked us to help ALL the horses in the world, not just our American horses.

Go into the post and see photos of these girls, and please send anything you can...

We go through the issues of American GH rescues helping the Galgos in Spain and the Irish Greyhounds..."and not" helping the American dogs first and foremost....

But they all need our help, and even $5 will help....I'm broke too.

JOE CONTINUED FROM THIS MORNING:
*******************************************************
On our ranch we have 110 horses. A giant storm coming.

With starving horses there are many issues, including colic and diarrhea.

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever!! Run with the angels honey!!

And all my love to the Heavenly Herd, too! You know you take me to where angels walk!!

Holding paws, hooves, hands, feets . . . with all four-legged, three- and two-legged FOBs, all the Barbaro Nation.

2008 WILL be the year the legislation gets passed!!

Upon lighting my usual votive for Barbaro in the Holy Family niche, kneeling there in quiet prayer before the Holy Family, votives flickering in the quiet, my gaze came to rest on the humble donkey who carried Mary to the stable . . . . and my heart cried at the mere thought of how anyone could bring harm (much less the horror of those places we know about) to our horses, donkeys, burros, mules . . . . really to any of our four-legged pals, tame or wild . . . . I also thought of all my special Famblee here.

Many Blessings in the New Year, prayers, hugs, love to all here. . . . all the BARBARO NATION!
YOU TRULY ARE SIMPLY THE BEST!

########
RENEE - Count me in again for St. Valentine's Day for dear HANS and his many pals!! Please keep us posted!! Wish I could have been there to help serve minty mash, of course, with many kisses on equine noses to share too!! :)

ANGEL DEE - oh so beautiful words!!

NIKITA - THE HORSE LOVING HUSKY - Miss Emma sends you a very hearty HAPPY NEW YEAR woof woof!!
And please give your lovely human "mum" a big husky hug for me, too!! Tante Lou Ann is on somewhat of a marathon with "The Philadelphia Rose"!!! :)

PADME (LYN G.) - my contribution going out this week to you for the 1/29 event! Hugs!

HARRIETTE - I was looking through my Memory Album for Barbaro and needed to thank you from my heart for your special words that carried me through the too many 29's of 2007.

Love to all,
always, Lou Ann

Jonna I could not do what Joe and Kathy dose each and everyday! But my heart is with them, and thanks too the entire FOB's who helped Joe for Christmas!
What a guy! 110 horses to care for, unbelievable!
Wish I could hug and kiss all the velvet noses.
Gee it's will to be a hard Jan. 29th. And I miss the Big Bay Colt. Thought it would get better. But it has not! What will it take! I do not know.

### Margie - just read your post. Only thing about working for non-humans is that the pay is not too good :)

I pray you find amazing work in an amazing way, and that you do a wonderful service for wonderful pay! Keep your eyes and ears open - it is on it's way to you!

You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Hiya, FsOB! I hope to be able to reach Kaufman TX's former mayor, Paula Bacon, this week. I have been downloading news articles about her efforts and I think that those clippings, as well as letters of support from the FsOB, will be very helpful in getting her considered for a Profiles in Courage Award. She certainly deserves one, in my opinion. We need more elected public officials like Mayor Bacon. Wouldn't she and Joe from TB Friends make a dynamite Presidential ticket? Peace, RMH

#### To Alex, please feel free to give Mayor Bacon my e-mail address if you speak with her in TX. My voicemail to her may've been truncated before I left my e-mail addy.
To Renee A.: Welcome back!
To Skyler: I'm going to tell Brent about the great tradition that you & your husband have started. Sounds like a winner to me.
To Margie: Good fortune to you as you look at new employment opportunities.
To Lou Ann: I'm going to tell Ms. Nikita that you send her good wishes. How sweet of you to think of the donkeys' wellbeing as you reflected upon the animals present in the Creche. If only everyone on Earth would think about the innate dignity of all four-legged, as well as two-legged creatures! Peace, Little Sister. ####

STRATEGY FOR THURSDAY JANUARY 3

It’s great to see everyone getting back in the groove with renewed determination to succeed. May 2008 see all of your dreams come true and may we celebrate the end of horse slaughter once and for all!!

Dear Debbie LA,

Thank you for posting the Jockey Club stallion breeding list for '07. I am happy to see some of the very best, such as Dynaformer still on the list, as well as Lion Heart, Mr Greely, Skip Away, and Pulpit.

I am NOT happy, however, to see such a long list of much lesser quality stallions who have obviously been bred simply because someone found a receptive mare. Sad...too many being born...not enough FOREVER homes.

Something else that greatly disturbs me, is that two beloved beauties, who in '06, were sent to Japan, to stud, are NOT listed as having sired any foals.

I am very worried about what might have happened to the fabulous BAGO, and the wonderful ROSES IN MAY.

Are they OK? Are they producing? Lord knows what happens to stallions who don't produce in Japan.

I have been watching on pedigreequery.com for any reports of their prodigy, expecting to see something at least by this season...now I am VERY worried.

Please, pray, my Frens, that they are OK.

Might anyone know how to find out anything about them?

Your FOB Fren, O

...(um)...in the previous post, I meant to say progeny...NOT prodigy. Sheesh...such a faupah.

Wishing all horses a safe and successful 2008. Comfortable nights, full bellies, proper care and companionship.

Love to all FOBs.. we've come a long, long way. Thank you, each FOB for walking "Gualainn ar ghualainn le cheile" (shoulder to shoulder together, in Irish Gaeilic) with me and for honoring the legacy of Barbaro. I treasure the people I have met here. Only 6 1/2 months till Saratoga opening day! If the AHSPA is passed by then - and it will be - the first round is on me.

Barbaro, thank you, thank you, always in our hearts, you beautiful spirit. Happy Birthday to all the TBs ... you had a very special birthday celebration yesterday, with love from the FOBs. : - )
Safety for all of you and those who train and care for you.

Thanks, Alex, for another grand year. Ride with the wind.

Peace ~

## Thanks for wishing me well, and for advice concerning my job situation.

I stopped at the store on my way home. Ran into the gal that ran the horse slaughter story in my local paper here. She also is on the board at the large shelter here. She tells me that a vacancy needs to be filled......community awareness!!! Maybe this is the door opening for me? As soon as I got home, I emailed her.

As for wages, this state is notorious for low wages. Living here, you get used to living a very frugal life. It is hard to take at first, but without the ability to live in a materialistic way, life will show us what truly is important. It seems sometimes we NEED to be stripped of the frivolity.

The connectivity continues. Barbaro > TWR > ABR > S311 > newspaper article > and now, maybe a rewarding position awaits.

It all keeps spreading across the universe, doesn't it?

Above post, re 11 horse rescue, is not from this Margie. I think there are a couple of us floating about.:-)

Good Night, all wonderful creatures here. Stay warm.

Hi Susan E.!

Today at work I was enjoying a small bag of Doritos and leaping from his blanket, comes Bart!

I broke off a piece for him to enjoy and set the bag down to continue working...Bart sniffed the piece, walked across my paperwork and dug his paw into the bag of Doritos!

He always seems to hook one of the largest chips out of the bag!

He ate the whole chip! (I thought for sure I was going to see that chip again in twenty minutes time)

The rest of the day, he was pretty quiet and well mannered.

Thank you for asking Susan! As far as Montego, she is so fuzzy right now! It's very cute!

We have been having wind-chill advisories here so I haven't been up to see her much these past few days but it's supposed to warm up later this week.

I plan to go up and spend some time with her and hopefully get back to doing some work with her.

Knowing Montego, I'll have something to share with you guys after I see her!

Good night Susan E. Thank you again for asking...and please know, I'll keep looking.
