Barbaro Updates: 473

updates are now here.

Update 2922: Cowboy Cal won the Tropical Park Derby: Cowboy Cal Romps in Tropical Derby, excerpt:

"He trained really well on dirt from the beginning, but his first race was a little disappointing, although it was a sprint," Pletcher said. "Then, he worked good on the grass and the Giant's Causeways do well on turf, so we mapped out a program that included the Laurel Futurity and he was pre-entered in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and so was Why Tonto, but neither one got in.

"We will definitely try Cowboy Cal back on the dirt, possibly the Fountain of Youth, and go from there."

Update 2921: its official (thanks equidaily) Steve Asmussen did win the training title for 2007 by three wins over Scott Lake. Jose Figuerao did ride two more winners for us last night at Sam Houston Race Park. Very cool.

Update 2920: HAPPY NEW YEAR! Two years ago today Barbaro won his third and final race on the turf as he prepared for his magnificent Derby victory. Cowboy Cal is attempting to follow Barbaro's path by coming off an emphatic win in the Laurel Futurity to the Tropical Park Derby: Cowboy Cal leads full field for Tropical Park Derby.

Update 2919: A pleasant afternoon and early evening spent at Sam Houston Race Park for the Lope fundraiser and slide show. Lope is an impressive rescue, that combines passion and business sensibility. Lynn (founder and owner) offered an impressive presentation and really believes it is a privilege to work with racehorses (x-athletes) as they transition to their new careers. She noted the importance of that mindset for her adopters also. She wants adopters to revere and treasure the opportunity to have these horses, rather than simply adopting them through pity.

The racing community seems to welcome LOPE's involvement with open arms. This manifests in their open support as well as financial support. At the slideshow I met the Houston Bureau Chief for the New York Times (who had written an article on LOPE in 2004) as well as an owner who had a horse who was a Texas-bred 3yo champion, he lost the horse through the claiming system, then he claimed him back solely to retire him, from a race out of Mountaineer Park. Just very cool.

Anyway, it was a fun event, on my way out of the racetrack I saw our jock (Jose Figeuroa) who was psyched we have won the training title for the year (no pressure on him to win a race or two tonight I guess!) A great evening, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Update 2918: Jay Privman reviews the year in horseracing: 2007: A vintage crop of 3-year-olds.

Off to Sam Houston Race Park for the final night of racing for 2007 and the LOPE fundraiser.

Update 2917: Fig (Jose Figeuroa) won the first race last night at Sam Houston Race Park. I will be wearing his Romo shirt later this week! I also received a set of jockey silks signed by all the jockeys. This will be donated to the LOPE silent auction later today at the racetrack. Day off today (and tomorrow).

Update 2916: A little chilly to start the day but it soon warmed up to a super morning. I had eight sets, six before the break and two afterwards. All went nicely, although quite a few of them were horses I had not ridden before. A few of my regular horses were working this morning (with the jocks) and went well too I think. Everyone was in good humor this morning, possibly to do with the fact we have two days off at this stage. The Fig (our jock) got plenty of ribbing this morning for getting beaten on the wire on one of our horses by the "old man" Paul Nolan, who rode three winners last night. Paul also organized the Jocks to sign a gift that will be included in the silent auction for LOPE during a fundraiser they are hosting tomorrow at the track. Paul said the jocks were pretty excited to do it knowing it was for LOPE. Very cool. Good early day's work.

Update 2915: Here are some photos of me riding off the track yesterday afternoon: Alex rode my OTTB today. Its the first time for a very long time I have ridden a horse for any other purpose than a racehorse in training. It was fun, and at a western barn which gave me an opportunity to watch some western riding (roping etc.) A pleasant way to spend the afternoon. At the races last night we won one (had a few seconds) but our jockey Figuero needs to win another tonight for me to wear his Cowboys shirt!

A former claimer won a Grade 1 race yesterday at Santa Anita: Former claimer Dearest Trickski captures La Brea.

Update 2914: Off to ride an OTTB, and then to the races to meet with Steve and Vicki Long.

Update 2913: A little chilly and overcast this morning at Sam Houston Race Park. It was a quieter morning for us too as we only had seven sets then a couple extra. That was a good thing as a few of the riders struggled to get to work on time this morning, I think night racing is starting to take its toll (although our jockey "Fig" who rode another winner last night arrived on time). I rode one of the extras making it eight for me ... course the other riders were kind enough not to start cleaning the tack until I was finished! The horses went well. I rode one for the first time which had been in our barn for a while. A colt by Indian Charlie, he went nicely. Most of the time we ride the same horses so we can get used to them, but once in a while its nice to get on something different. Coming off the track off my last horse someone fell off right in front of me. Thankfully I was attached to the pony so my horse did not do anything silly. All in all a decent morning's work.

Update 2912: John Henry is Kentucky's newsmaker of the year for 2007: John Henry Wins Newsmaker Poll.

Pat Valenzuela, who rode Sunday Silence to spectacular victories, has had a very troubled career, and his troubles continue: Pat Valenzuela's License Revoked.

Good morning Barbaro, sweet spirit horse - you are ever-present in my mind and my hear! Good morning to those Fans of Barbaro who, with pure hearts and noble intentions, seek to carry out his legacy!

I will be very pleased to see the last of 2007 - it has NOT been a good year for many of us. For me personally the nightmare of January 29th marked the beginning of a VERY bad year on many fronts...

And yet we all need to look back with pride on the accomplishments of Barbaro's merry band of warriors: more than 1,700 horses saved from the charnel houses - none of which now operate in these United States; more than three-quarters of a million dollars raised for various "horse-related" charities and for the support of rescued horses; real progress in the struggle to convince our government to do the honorable thing and pass the AHSPA - hopefully EARLY in the new year; and Barbaro's frens and famblee reaching out helping hands to support each other in times of tragedy, grief and need...

And so onward we march into 2008 under the banner which is RED, WHITE AND BARBARO!

Love and blessings to all for a safe, happy and productive New Year!

Morning Nancy,Barbaro lives in all of us.Happy New Year,I am hoping a better one for all people and horses.!!!
###
Had a thought###(Yes they happen sometimes :)
I read the obit on Dale Baird, and all the comments on his total disregard for his horses.
Well in his obit,it states the family wishes in lieu of flowers a donation to the charity of your choice.Wouldn't it be cool if all the fob's donated a couple bucs to A rescue in his name,or TB retirement home,in his name.Wouldn't that send a powerful message to his family, who will be inheriting the poor hporses???Or am I way off base?

BRENDA RYDER - no, I don't think you are at all off base...it's a great idea! I wish I had even $10 left right now to do this, although I would give the donation "in loving memory of all the horses Dale Baird sent to slaughter..."

Am reposting Renee's beautiful invocation for the coming year from last night. Renee: thank you for this gift to the FoBs...
*************************************************

As we look toward a brand new year
Then gaze back to the past
We pause with mixed emotions
And memories that still last.

For this year has taught us lessons
We never thought we?d learn
To stand in the face of adversity
Seeking peace for which we yearn.

Each life a precious memory
Each face burned in our souls
The hero, the innocent, those who were lost
Were halves who made someone whole.

So we pray for this year to be peaceful
For strength to see us through
For each one who lost someone precious
And for all that is holy and true.

As we pray God?s eternal blessings
For our leaders and our land
We walk toward the future together
Heart to heart and hand in hand.

LET'S GO ALL OUT TO HONOR BARBARO'S LIFE & LEGACY ON JANUARY 29th, 2008...with a (hopefully) huge donation to the Laminitis Fund at New Bolton!

Padme (Lyn Gilbert) has graciously agreed to be our Treasurer for this undertaking...she has a PayPal account, and will also accept contributions by snail mail UNTIL WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23rd, which means we have less than four weeks to accomplish this! (If you're using PayPal, please try to include the 3% "processing fee" so that all your donation will be designated for the Laminitis Fund - thanks!)

Lyn will be presenting the check (hopefully on Monday, January 28th because New Bolton wants the 29th to be a quiet day, and we do respect their feelings), and I believe that Laura who created the gorgeous Barbaro ornaments will also be there to present the proceeds from the sale of the ornaments...all in all, a great day for the Laminitis Fun, and for the horses who will ultimately benefit!

Everything you need to know about this tribute can be found right here: OVER THE TO9 FOR 1/29/08!

Dear FAMBLEE

There is a poll on the DB that desperately needs our attention...I urge you to read all the posts and in particular Alex's post !!!

In honor of BARBARO and his Frens it is critical that we send a strong message to the powers that be .....VOTE NO !!!!

Enducting this individual into the Hall of Fame goes against everything that BARBARO and FOB stand for !!!!

Dear Lord help us to re-educate these people ...help us to win this WAR!!! Let this legislation pass. Lord let the suffering end !!

HUGS and love to ALL !!!

SATURDAY AT TB FRIENDS...THE KBS call and chat with JOE: ONE HAD A 6-DAY VACATION IN HAWAII. SLEEPING WITH THE DEVIL. THIS IS HOW ARCHANGELS REDEEM HORSES. SURELY THE SHELTONS ARE SHIELDED BY BRIGADES OF WARRIOR ANGELS WHEN THEY HAVE TO DO BUSINESS WITH THESE SPAWN FROM HELL.....
*****************************************************

Saturday, December 29th...

Hey Joe, you have more horses here than we do at the race track.

The above was said yesterday by a trainer from Golden Gate Fields. He brought me a broken down gelding, a bottle of pain pills, and a turkey sandwich from Subway.

Recent arrivals from the race track include 3 broken knees. A broken ankle. 3 bowed tendons. A major hock problem. A major cannon bone problem. We can go through a bottle of pain pills in less than a week. The trainer from Golden Gate Fields says San Francisco is beautiful. All the holiday sights and smells. Later last night the trainer was going to dine at a fancy joint in North Beach. Later last night I had to give his broken down gelding another pain pill. So cold you can see your breath. A basketball game on the giant TV. Horse killer Wade Giles phones to say he is back from his Christmas holiday. 6 nights in Hawaii, and he ate scallops for almost every meal. Yesterday horse killer Wade Giles picked up a thoroughbred gelding for free, just by answering an ad from a newspaper. The gelding has a racing tattoo, and for $400.00 he can be mine. I say okay, and transportation is being arranged.

And then before bed I had a hunk of banana cream pie from Claimjumpers. Pony Boy ate the crust. The rain came, which means the owls stay away. I always wonder, where do owls go when it is raining? From far away you can hear baby foxes. Porky Pig grunts in her sleep. 109 horses on this poopy muddy ranch.

And now at 5:40 on a Saturday morning, and the rain has stopped. Later today we could be a sizzling 48 degrees. The coffee is from Folgers, and microwave waffles were made by Eggo. My wife Cathy has already left for the barn, feeding the morning grains. At sunrise we load the old ranch truck with alfalfa, and hopefully our neighbor Dennis does not have to pull us out of the mud. If I had a dollar for everytime we have been stuck, I would own beautiful San Francisco. A special Happy Birthday to Aubrey Green, who today turns Sweet 16, and hey that rhymes. Tonight Aubrey will feast with friends and family at Joes Crab Shack, the birthday place to go.

And a special hello to Bonnie Buron in Florida, and Thank You for your very kind phone message.

Also a special hello to Andrea Guillot who lives in Idaho. The day after Christmas Andrea rescued a thoroughbred gelding with a racing tattoo. The gelding was living in deplorable conditions at a hog farm. Andrea is just 15 years old, and with her Christmas money she is paying a boarding stable to bring this gelding back to decent shape. Happy New Year to Andrea Guillot. Your letter made my day...

Enjoy your cold and muddy Saturday, and be sure to hug your horses. 360 shopping days left until Christmas...

Joe

Yesterday was cold and gray.

Bottom right shows an adoption from 2005. Parry is with the beautiful filly Not A Clue.

Good Morning Famblee,

In the words of Harry Carey, "Holy Cow!" Many, many of us must be expressing our opinion of Dale Baird being in the Hall of Fame. As of about 10 minutes ago, the TB Times poll results were:

Yes (he should be in the Hall): 30.65%
No (he should not be in the Hall): 69.35%

Please don't interpret my joy at seeing that vote as saying that I have any opinion of the man himself, I don't. My opinion of anyone being in any hall of fame are based on what that person did in and for their sport. I judge not the man.

I do judge the methods he used. As many of us have heard, his methods were despicable. Apparently, many feel that way too. We here all know that there are many many trainers and owners that lead the way in taking care of their Horses. My comments are not meant to disparage other trainers or owners or the industry; they are specific to Mr. Baird, no one else. It is a shame that Mr. Baird apparently considered his Horses as expendable commodities only good for one thing.

Thank you Horse fans.

No Horse left behind.

Your words do not disparage other owners and trainers at all. We must all be judged independently for our actions.

I am an owner and proud to say that I voted NO!! I believe the public must send a message. This will only serve to improve our industry. I'm glad they posted this poll so that we could be heard.

Mr Baird has a lot to be accountable for it seems?? Info comes from credible sources...

EVIL should never profit over GOOD !!
Something my parents taught me when I was a wee one and I taught my wee one !!!!

It is nice to be a winner but it is more important how we win and the example we set for others !!!

In Bairds case I think it is not a good example....does not deserve to be rewarded.. sends the wrong message to up and coming trainers on how to succeed in the industry....

These are my opinions only...but coincidentaly and thankfully the feelings of many many others.

Good Morning FOB,

As this year is ending, there are many memories that have made us reach both the highs & the lows of our emotions. Most of all, beginning with the loss of Barbaro last January.
We cried together, we grieved together, we took a very deep breath & stayed together; creating the legacy of Barbaro.
Some of the highs have been incredible. We have worked together to help shut down the slaughterhouses in our country. The movement has stayed together & become even stronger in convincing our elected officials the will of the people is to end the transportation of horses to be slaughtered in other countries. To see the ongoing financial support for the laminitis fund; $29.00 on the 29th.
What touches me the most, is the wonderful work all the rescues do. These are the most caring, unselfish people I have ever known. The personal sacrifices they make is unbelievable. Look at the numbers. All the money collected, all the horses saved.
I love going to the discussion board & being able to follow a horse from rescue. To see the foals being born, to see injured & mistreated horses healed.
Right now, Horse Feathers is having a raffle for a beautiful Barbara Livingston picture of our Barbaro taken at Fair Hill. (see HORSE FEATHERS RAFFLE - BARBARO PICTURE) The picture will take your breath away. It will make you cry! She has captured the depth & wisdom of his soul in his eyes. Please take the time to look at the picture & help support the wonderful work being done at this rescue.
As Tiny Tim said, "God Bless us, everyone." May all of 2008 find our famblee together, united, stronger in our resolve to work in Barbaro's memory. We are his voice & the voice of all the horses.

Barb,
I must admit, I haven't thought of it in terms of education. I thought of it initially as an outgrowth of the esprit in the military and the promise we made to each other that no matter what happened, we'd bring each other home. It struck me that what we do here in all our many ways is to ensure that all Horses have a loving home. Thank you.

No Horse left behind!

P.S. When I was in Yuma recently, I enjoyed the warm weather. My step-mom and sister were wearing sweaters and hoodies. Me? Shorts and t-shirts in the cold mornings. Beat the heck out of the warm mornings here near DC!

Lee, LOL. You can always tell the tourists here in Arizona. When it is cold, they are in shorts, because they think it is warm. The natives are always bundled up when it drops below 70 degrees !

I had thought your message had come from "No child left behind," which is kind of a joke. It's good in principle, but fails to address a whole lot of things.

In any case, I agree. NO HORSE LEFT BEHIND ! ! !

O.K. ONE MORE STORY, then I'm off to work with the horses in my hooded jacket !

I've been here in AZ for twenty some years, but when I first arrived, I went looking for a Christmas tree. I was wearing a t-shirt and shorts because it was 65 degrees. There was a woman in the same Christmas tree lot wearing a fur coat ! I just didn't get it !

Now that I have been here this long, my blood has "thinned" to the point that I am the one with a warm (NOT FUR ! ! !) coat on. LOL

Trainer Gary Contessa just took the title of most New York wins in a year, when Silver Prospector won the 1st at Aqueduct - just now. (watching TVG) I was getting ready to post the below when that just happened.

Trainer Mandella on TVG Legends

Anybody else see trainer Richard Mandella interviewed on TVG's Legends this morning? Now THIS guy really gets it. Talking about one of his horses (can't remember horse's name; was one who overcame a cardiac sac infection as a 2 yr old and not only recovered but went on to be quite a winner) he said, "I loved him like a son." Talking about The Tin Man (obviously the segment was filmed before Tinny's career-ending injury-surgery-injury) he explained why he had him gelded. It was after Tinny suffered bowed tendon(s) at I think age 2; gelding a colt before he has fully developed, keeps a large amount of muscle weight from developing, and with front end problems, keeping that weight off is obviously helpful; less weight on those legs. He said more trainers/owners should think about that, and also, the quote of the day for me: (not verbatim, but in essence) "There aren't enough good old geldings around these days."

Officials seize animals from Animal Angels Horse Rescue
By Coloradoan staff

Officials seized approximately 20 animals from Animal Angels Horse Rescue in Larimer County about 10 a.m. today.

A report containing a visual assessment of the animals and their living conditions was completed Friday afternoon by veterinarian Bruce Connally, according to a news release from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Department. Based on the report, a search warrant was issued for the removal of the animals.

The animals were taken to The Ranch in Loveland and will be temporarily housed in the West Barn.

Investigators, along with a veterinarian and vet students from Colorado State University and the director of operations at the Larimer Humane Society, had visited Animal Angels Horse Rescue on Thursday amid complaints that horses there were being starved.

The sheriff’s office plans a press conference at 2:30 p.m., today at the West Barn at The Ranch to discuss the case.

### My precious OTTB (one of the "good old geldings" of which there are too few, and don't you just LOVE Richard Mandella for saying that??) was handled for awhile by a trainer who didn't "get it."

I have read quotes from this man (who is no longer training in CA because he "didn't like all the rules" and someone "looking over" his shoulder all the time) who is now training in TX and LA, apparently unimpeded by such things as "getting it" and using appropriate behavior toward the horses in his barn.

It took me about 18 months to work through all the emotional and physical issues that were created in Huey by such "tough guy" training methods.

###On the issue of geldings, AQHA has always had wonderful geldings because breeders as a rule do not keep many horses "whole." I had to laugh when the Arabian Horse Association began having all these gelding incentive programs--eventually even those folks realized that the gelding process made better horses while improving the breed.

### Anyway, as I have said before, my Huey is indeed "one of the lucky ones," and if I were in the market for another horse, I would not hesitate one SECOND to get another OTTB gelding and embark on yet another uniquely wonderful experience.

I am a free lance writer (well, you wouldnt know it by my spelling and typing) and am currently working on a book called "Chiefs Story' I dont care if it never gets published it as been fun to write. ##maribel, yes, it sounds like your Willy was a chief also. He (like Willy) doesnt like any animal on his front yard, block, and city. we still stand in back of the vets office for shots as he gets scared and too nervous to go in. Dont you think you loved Willy so much as I do chief because it was such a struggle with them. Chief (like Willy) has a great personality and is so funny and smart. I know you miss Willy something awful as I will Chief. ###well, I am ready to get into 2008 to let the senators, etc know the FOBs are still here and we are more fired up than ever.

LAMINITIS RESEARCH

Wasn't sure where to post this, so I put it on the TWR site as well. Those of you who followed Barbaro, and are interested in the current research on Laminitis, might find the following article interesting. I found it on the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine's website: http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu/news_&_events.htm#Laminitis_Projects

NTRA’s Barbaro Fund Will Support Laminitis Projects at LSU and University of Georgia

Two projects focusing on the equine disease laminitis will be launched soon utilizing funds raised by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) in memory of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro. The projects, costing slightly more than $100,000 in total, will be conducted by researchers at Louisiana State University and the University of Georgia.

Following the death of Barbaro after he contracted laminitis, the NTRA Charities—Barbaro Memorial Fund was created in his honor. On Belmont Stakes Day at Belmont Park in June, NTRA President and Chief Executive Officer Alex Waldrop presented a check for $100,000 to Dell Hancock, chairman of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation. The foundation, traditionally the leading source of private funding for equine research, was entrusted by the NTRA to manage the funds raised primarily from racing fans, racing participants, and racetracks.

The Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation issued a special call for laminitis research and convened a panel of experts to evaluate the nine projects presented by researchers from throughout North America.

The projects chosen were designed by Professor Susan Eades of Louisiana State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine and Professor Douglas Allen of the University of Georgia. Dr. Eades’ project will continue veterinary science’s efforts to understand the specific route of development of laminitis while testing the hypothesis that the medication doxycycline can prevent the onset of the disease and serve as a therapeutic agent for horses that contract it.

Dr. Eades will work on this project with Dr. Lee Ann Fugler, a PhD candidate in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. “We are evaluating doxycycline to see if it inhibits production of matrix metalloproteinases in horses as it does in people with diabetes, etc.,” said Dr. Eddlestone. “Matrix metalloproteinases are possible the enzymes that break down the connective tissue that attaches the coffin bone to the hoof during laminitis. We will then see if it prevents development of laminitis. We are doing some preliminary evaluations of doxycycline now and will begin testing it as a preventative for laminitis after the first of the year.”

Dr. Allen’s work will follow up on recent research indicating that serotonin might be a key chemical responsible for development of laminitis and examine whether a medication that breaks down serotonin might prevent the clinical signs of laminitis following carbohydrate overload.

Both projects are scheduled to be completed within two years.

“The fund-raising effort of the NTRA already is having a positive impact on researchers’ attempts to solve a major malady that is a constant peril to all equines,” said Edward L. Bowen, president of Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation. “If sufficient additional fund raising in Barbaro’s memory is achieved, additional laminitis proposals already designed can be funded. Also, the remaining laminitis proposals we received will be considered for funding through the foundation’s regular competitive grants program.”

“The case of Barbaro was a dramatic illustration of just how frustrating and tragic a disease laminitis can be,” said Waldrop. “The extraordinary effort to save him touched millions of people. The NTRA Charities - Barbaro Memorial Fund is a way for all of us to contribute to equine health and safety in a way that will ensure that Barbaro’s legacy lives on forever.”

As described by the Merck Veterinary Manual, laminitis involves a breakdown and degeneration of the horn-like and sensitive laminae connected to the hoof’s inner wall. Various stimuli can initiate the process. Laminitis is extremely painful, which often leads to the decision that euthanasia is the only humane course.

Laminitis research has long been a priority for the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and other fund-raising agencies and university research teams.

NANCY IN CT and others:

You indicated in the DB about someone who will be contributing DIRECTLY to UPENN rather than by sending a ck to Lyn Gilbert, b/c her company will match it 100%.

Another fact that potential contributors might want to consider is that by contributing DIRECTLY to UPENN, the donation will probably be tax-deductible to the contributor. But if a donation is sent to an individual, i.e., to Ms. Gilbert or to anyone else, then the contributor will not be able to take a tax deduction for his/her donation.

It is a win-win situation for both UPENN and the contributor when the donation is made DIRECTLY to UPENN.

There is certainly nothing wrong with Ms. Gilbert or anyone else volunteering to collect the money and to present a check to UPENN, but there is also nothing wrong with individuals desiring to avail themselves of a legitimate tax deduction on their income tax return. In fact, many folks decide to contribute even more than they would have, once they know that their donation is tax-deductible.

If the "big" check presented to UPENN is drawn on an individual's personal account, whether it be a personal checking account or their personal PAYPAL account, then that individual can take the tax deduction for the WHOLE amount, b/c the receipt or cancelled check will bear the individual's name.

Therefore, if individual contributors wish to take their own tax deduction, they should send their individual donation DIRECTLY to UPENN.

Posted by: TaxPerson at December 30, 2007 10:28 AM

Dear Tax Person:

I understand the tax-deduction issues here and I was asked to coordinate any funds that any FOB's may choose to contribute. I am not the organizer here - simply the messenger. I do not want to force anyone to contribute to this enterprise - simply acting as the go-between between some generous people and UPenn because another FOB is going to be at New Bolton at or near the 29th as well. It would be uplifting for the staff at New Bolton to see that we still honor their heroic efforts for Barbaro and countless other animals. I have no intention of using this "big check" for my own personal tax deduction - only what I have already contributed - I will be presenting a bank check to UPenn - not my own personal check for precisely the reasons you state in your post. The money I receive is not my money - I am only stewarding it for people who wish to contribute. As I said, I am only the messenger - the conduit, so to speak.

You are welcome to e-mail me privately to discuss this issue further. I'd also like to know who you are since you did not sign your name. I sign all my posts by both my spiritual and earthly names. I have nothing to hide.

TAX PERSON...I echo Lyn Gilbert's sentiments - you are not only welcome, but encouraged, to email me at mllebutterfly@sbcglobal.net

I will be expecting to hear from you!

Posted by: Nancy in CT at December 30, 2007 11:50 AM

Tax Person:

One more thing...I am awaiting confirmation as to your identity and if I am correct, will be asking a lawyer friend of mine to examine what was written to see if slander or libel may be involved. Its a small thing, but your style of writing is very familiar to me. Alex and Wendy have been notified by Nancy. BTW, my e-mail is: healinglovepeaceons@yahoo.com.

I may be spiritual but I am not a doormat. Please remember that.

The other thing I want to ask you is what are you afraid of with this enterprise? How does it hurt you? What fear is inside you where you feel you need to attack people who only want to show appreciation to the dedicated staff at New Bolton/UPenn? Please begin to examine yourself to discover what this ego-driven fear is that causes you to hate others who don't live up to your expectations. Look at yourself first before you decide to attack other people.

I pity you.

Alex, Wendy, and to the rest of the board, I apologize for this outburst of mine, but I will defend my character when attacked. I will not comment any more on this issue and if need be, will leave the board in order to reduce the angst.

###
TAX PERSON - you have chosen to attack the wrong person (Ms Gilbert, as you refer to her) in the guise of helpful information...your transparency is pathetic!

I asked "Ms Gilbert" to be the "Treasurer" of our "Honoring Barbaro's Life and Legacy on January 29, 2008" campaign because she is closest to New Bolton and would be the most likely person to present A CASHIER'S CHECK in person...along with Laura, who will be present the proceeds from the sale of her lovely Christmas ornaments at the same time!

If you were truly a part of this organization, you would have been apprised of the fact (by ME) that checks made payable to "Ms Gilbert" would be issued to New Bolton as a cashier's check...as a donation from the FANS OF BARBARO - not as contributions from individuals. One reason for this is that it "levels the playing field" by allowing those who can contribute $5. to be on an equal footing with those who are fortunate enough to contribute a larger sum!

And the obvious reason for NOT contributing through the UPenn site for this ONE PROJECT ONLY is so that the check to be presented in person would be as large as possible...why is your ego so threatened by this?

I am not in possession of a firearm - therefore, nobody is being FORCED to participate in this project, and certainly nobody will be browbeaten as in other efforts!

Unlike the much more noble "Ms Gilbert" I will NOT leave this board or the Forum (unless banned) because I refuse to be victimized by you.

I have the greatest admiration for "Ms Gilbert's" serenity...

JONNA - thanks for the much-needed laugh this morning. Some people have nothing better to do than to sabotage others' good intentions...

If you're using a blowtorch, don't forget the goggles! Back in the day when I was still married, my ex always deteriorated into foul language of the highest order when (a) trying to get the tree into the stand STRAIGHT and (b) dealing with the dreaded lights!

The spotlight my cousin had was actually quite attractive...it had four segments - red, blue, gold and clear - and could be set to a very slow speed so it would highlight the tree with the various colors quite gradually, therefore NOT causing your eyeballs to roll back in your head or, in your case, not causing a migraine!

Don't jump all over me please. I have channeled all of my rescue, volunteer, and meager monetary help to all of the local rescues in my community. There are 4. Happy Sunday everyone; can’t believe where the last year has gone, a year ago seems like
yesterday - My life is so much richer since I wandered into Barbaroland -

So elated that those critters in Colorado were rescued; but did you see the history, the
circumstance how Margaret came to see the situation firsthand in the first place? What a story. Don’t mean to tease, don’t have a link at the moment, will post a little later. Suffice to say, serendipity or divine intervention? Who cares, the result was achieved.

Trying to make lemonade - IMO exposure of this hellhole may lead to some industry standards and oversight of horse rescues (as I believe are already in place for other critters?) that will be all the more needed after our legislation passes.

“I may be spiritual but I am not a doormat. Please remember that.”

As we say in Yiddish, “gut gezugt” [well said, with intimation of Amen].

Reminds me of what my infanticipating step-god-daughter said the other day when I questioned whether the music equipment she was schlepping from the van to the venue was too heavy for her; her reply - “I may be pregnant but I’m not

Margie, for me New Bolton IS local - I'm only 20 minutes away from KF and NBC so between the ranch, Tim's barn and them, that is where I focus my energies. I don't know what is going to happen when "Cassidy" is finally ready for release (which should be fairly soon...) - may have to cut back on some stuff to market that, but its funny. When I (or my son) talk about "Cassidy", people just do stuff for me...its strange - but doors open so I have to run with this. ANYWAY - fast forward, Snickers has had surgery that restored her vision; Willie was adopted by FOB Dawn Mancina of MI while Snickers remained at the rescue (Fair Dinkum, I believe, recently relocated to IN); and now Dawn has made accommodations for Snickers and was approved to adopt her - and today's the day Snickers arrives to reunite with Willie. Ain't dat sumfin!

for background from Dawn, go to

update see post 197

Dawn will be posting pics later today at that thread.

MORE LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH ... and then some . . .

C.J. and all,

That reunion between Snickers and Willie is really a success story ! We've accomplished a lot this year, and I just rate that particular story way up there near the top.

Lee...I see 'my' Niners play the Browns today, maybe we can squeak out a winnnnnn, there:)

I cannot find Green Bay playing 'anywhere' on my 'guide' today!!! I saw a clip on Sacramento News of fans shoveling snow from the stands for 'today's' game....but cannot find WHERE to watch:/ Dang! I'll have to do some 'serious' searching closer to game times...mayhaps the guide is wrong! I HOPE!

In searching for Green Bay, I didn't see the Eagles playing anywhere, either....I have the three major networks, and Fox....and NFL channel, so will resume my 'search' later on!

Vent on, Margie....you're a Mainer, right? It's in your blood....long fuses, but when it's time to vent, vent you do...

I'm off to get food. Our little grocery store is actually close enough to walk....but I will have too much to carry (blah blah, what a great dissembler I have become.)

Oy?Is there nothing on TV? The hounds will have to watch some wordy thing on the Arthurian age...Yawn.

We love you, Margie. Dee spreads rainbows all around you, I just know she does....

Cherokee Devotional Sunday Dec. 30 (sharing email from Harriette Brilllianthawk)

There are times we forget the road we have been over together, how difficult it was, and how good. Undoubted loyalty has thrived between us. We know we can depend on understanding and kindness, but most of all forgiveness. We have laid aside anything we did not understand until it came clear, yet we have not excluded others or forgotten their importance. The Great Spirit wrote it in our contract to take special care, to load every rift in life with good thinking, good acting, and good words. From the beginning, we have planted good seeds. Now is time to share the harvest. We will walk on the paths of peace and broadcast to others that it is well with us.

Slew flew by and showed me the Bills vs. Eagles game is on CBS at 1pm here in the East Wing. It may not be shown on the Left Coast.

I sent him to help you look, but I think he's heading for Seattle by mistake. He said something about chasing seahawks out of HIS town.

Anybody get the info from Aqueduct? I turned my head from the TV for a second and a Horse fell right after the wire. I think! the Horse may be ok, he was up and jogging down the track when I looked back. I didn't catch his name, but I think Minstrel is part of it.

Shoot. It was a 2 Horse spill, No Allegiance was the winner and the first to fall. Jockeys were Carol Cedeno and Eibar Coa who both appear ok, but nothing more on the Horses from TVG.

Whow I just read the good news about Snickers being reunited with Willie. What wonderful news. I am so happy for Dawn and of course mother and son.

Still catching up on back issues of TB Times. Dec 15 edition had a great story about an Ole Bob Bowers stallion still active at stud in Minnesota.

Cleaning out the closet, I found a photo of Kelso, Forego and John Henry when they appeared together at Belmont Park in the early 1980's -- Kelso died of colic just a few days later.

But even better than that was a letter I found that the track announcer Marshall Cassidy sent to me many years ago thanking me for a complimentary letter I had written him about an incredible call he made in a very tight race. What a nice classy letter that I received from him that I will treasure for the rest of my life.

Am so happy about Snickers and Willie. Just makes my day. I sent a little money for Snickers eye surgery and I owed my brother $30.00 (sometimes we bet on a football game-very rarely) but I told him he wasnt getting it as I donated his winnings along with mine to Snickers. I told him it was his donation. He laughd and said okay and then said , Snickers who? ###Gee, the Patriots played a close game. Dallas plays today at 3:00 (texas time). I would like to see them go to the superbowl but I dislike Jerry Jones. By the way it is like one game a year I bet as I cant afford to lose. ###nancy, like you, 2007 was not a good year starting with losing Barbaro. So many of us have had health problems, etc etc. However, look at what we have achieved. For example Snickers nad Willie and all the hundreds we have rescued and given new lifes to. Also, we have made great strides with our senators, etc . We are starting the new year ahead of the game. we will end slaughter in 2008. margie, regarding the KBs and pencils in hell my grandfather was always so kind to any animal. He was a great Christian and thought sometimes needy animals are angels to test us. well, thats what he thought.

Happy Sunday Fambleeeee!!

just stopped by to say HAY and hope everyone has a lovely day today. There are many horses and llama and even a potbellied pig who are having a much better day today, thanks to Colorado Thoroughbred Rescue, and a bunch of kind volunteers, and Colorado Horse Rescue who presently has three horses removed by Margaret DeSarno (Colorado Thoroughbred Rescue) last week. Thank you AGAIN to everyone who signed the petition, who called the Humane Society in Larimer, and who offered support. What a great effort. THAT is what it's all about.

uh, Tax Person, perhaps I could recommend that you consider a hobby? Your post certainly tave the appearance of referring to Padme as "the contributor". You football maven, you....
We used to make my mother go down to the finished basement "family room" when the Vikings would play. She'd wear her Viking's regalia and scream bloody murder.

She's in Charlotte NC now, and has continued her love affair with basketball--most particularly: SU basketball. It's crazy, but the Charlotte area is LOADED with SU fans.

No matter what kind of trouble SU Alumn Carmelo Anthony gets into with the the Philly Eagles, she defends him.
"He's just surrounded by Bad People!" she'll intone, and that's the end of the conversation...

And then there's Donovan McNabb--also a superb SU player, when we actually had a football coach, sneer, sneer. There are really vitriolic bumper stickers all over the city suggesting what the Coach can do with various objects. Ah well...

I am reading a hilarious book by sportswriter Will Blythe about the brutal rivalry between Duke and NC. The title is: To Hate like This is To Be Happy Forever. I love it...great title.

Sophie's Lee: this one is for you: (speaking of black TBs:

It Was Her Stride, Long, Almost Dream-Like, Floating

Riders with a sense
of pace were fooled.
She was like a dancer
with balloon, hanging
in the air, suspended.
If you were on her,
you thought the
clockers were wrong.
Sometimes it seemed
she wasn't running,
never came back
winded. Those long
legs seemed too
long for a real horse.
Someone said it
was as if she hung
there and the ground
rushed under her.

JOE FOR SUNDAY, HE IS WORKING MIRACLE, AND THOSE THEY COULDN'T SAVE WEIGH MORE HEAVILY ON HIS HEART THAN THOSE THE DID SAVE....
that makes him who he is...I love the ER nurse asking about Pony Boy. (Who really is a total Stud Muffin.)
***************************************************
Sunday, December 30th...

It seems everyone is sick. A horrible flu combined with a chest cold. Holly Meeks, Mikka Thorson, Tim Gee, Angela Youngblood, Stephanie Diaz, Gary Duncan, Becky Coombs, Allison Martino, along with a whole bunch of others. It begins with a sore throat, and by the next day you are stuck in bed. Tis the season. So far Cathy and I remain healthy. Unless you want to talk about my broken big toe. My broken rib. My never ending back pain. My poor vision. My poor handwriting. My lousy choice of clothing. Cathy and her swollen hand. Her poor vision. We both limp through life. A hitch to our giddy up. Jenny Hartman and myself compare notes. Every single day both of us are injured. We have one cabinet which is for medicine only. Broken down race horses. Broken down old folks. Several dogs and cats who are a combined million years old. A pig who is 14 and I wonder, how long do pigs live? We are more than a Mom and Pop ranch. We are a Grandma and Grandpa ranch. I voted for Nixon, and I still love my 8 track tape player.

And when the emergency room nurse calls you by your first name, and asks how is Pony Boy, it is time to once again examine the direction of your life.

Poor Mikka Thorson is so sick she cannot even read her new Cosmo. On the phone Mikka says everything is blurry. I tell her everything for me has been blurry for the last 30 years.

We have a gelding who just came to us from the race track, and he is badly broken down. A cutie pie, and for the most part he walks on 3 legs. The gelding should recover, and 4 or 6 months from now he will be living in our fields because seldom are forever lame horses adopted. And this gelding will be forever lame.

In the year 2007 there have been 155 horses come to us from race tracks. More than 130 of these horses arrived with injuries.

Fresh off the track horses who we purchased from feed lots total 27. Of those 27, 22 were injured.

Older thoroughbreds with racing tattoos who we purchased from feed lots total 65. Of those 65, 58 were suffering from either injuries, neglect, or both.

Older thoroughbreds without racing tattoos who we purchased from feed lots total 31. Of those 31, 18 came to us either injured, neglected, or both.

Only 2 more days to go. The above numbers will no doubt be the final numbers for 2007.

The total comes to 278 thoroughbreds rescued in 2007. For other breeds, the total comes to 141 horses. I think. We keep journals, and even with my poor vision I think I have counted correctly.

Now will come letters saying quit bragging. But I am not bragging. Only sharing. And I always tell anyone who listens, it is not about the horses we rescue. It is about the horses we were unable to rescue. There were literally thousands. And it is because of those thousands of horses we keep going on. 2008 will be another record year. New numbers to top old numbers. By the end of every June we start using a calculator.

To our friends who are sick we wish you a quick recovery. Outside it is cold and gray. We have not seen the sun for 5 days. 109 horses on this frozen muddy ranch. We wave bye bye to 2007. The hot coffee is from Peets, and we are late for feeding breakfast. Misty lives in our yard, and she gives me a hurry up look through the window. Well okay then...

Joe

Animal Rescue

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is pretty simple... Please tell ten
friends to tell ten today! The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble
getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of
getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals. It
takes less than a minute (How about 20 seconds) to go to their site and
click on the purple box 'fund food for animals' for free. This doesn't
cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number
of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in
exchange for advertising.
Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

SO SORRY SO SORRY; ANOTHER ONE LOST. I found this on a site I googled up. Damn, damn. Damn.

In memory-No Allegiance, he gave the race of his life at 47-1 just before his death

Posted by Jeff Rosen on Sun Dec 30 18:39:04 2007
I was at Aqueduct today, instead of the Nostalgia Train. In the first race, number 7, No Allegiance, ridden by female jockey Carol Cedeno, won the race going wire to wire and just after he crossed the finish line he broke his leg throwing Cedeno to the ground. It was so bad a break and he was in such pain they put up a screen to block him from the crowd and he was euthanized right there on the track. Since he was just a $14,000 claimer, he'll never be remembered like Ruffian or Barbaro. So I say, let us remember him. (By the way, Cedeno got up and she appeared all right.)

This really kills me: he wasn't even 5. born: 3/29/02. I hate it. I hope God whisked him away fast. The poor bunny.

Now I really DO need to see pix of Snickers and Willie...something to sleep on, not the images of this poor baby being put down on the damned track, so bad they couldn't even van him off...

Rest in peace, NO ALLEGIANCE, and may light perpetual shine upon you. I mourn your sacrifice and attempt to rejoice in your entrance into the land of eternal light and peace...and the greenest pastures you've ever seen. God bless you, dear boy!

Yes, Dee, it is AFFIRMED, and I hope Barbaro is introducing In Allegiance to all the heavenly herd!

Hurray for Dawn, Snickers and Willie !

I always HOPE for a balance. Losing "No Allegiance" is tough. Losing ANY of them is tough.

Rest in Peace dear one. No Allegiance...this is so sad. The race of his life...

Sophie's Lee mentioned that is was a 2 horse spill. Was the other horse OK? I really hope so.

Jonna,
Thank you for posting the sad news. I completely agree with Mr. Rosen...we, the FsOB should ensure that No Allegience IS remembered like Ruffian and Barbaro!

Rest in Peace dear One.

Carleen,
I believe the other Horse is ok. I saw on TVG right after one riderless Horse jogging down the track. In that short glimpse, he appeared to be ok.

Snifters Spirit finished next to last. He led the first half of the race then faded. Looked like he just ran out of gas, but he came home safe.

Barb,
Truly, tonight I feel the pain. I never heard of No Allegiance before today, but his death hit me hard.

It truly, truly sucks. Short of ending racing though, how do we stop it?

Lee,

We don't. They will continue to die. The safer surfaces will help, but their physiology, the breeding, the small feet, small thin leg bones, and the NATURE of racing, or any sport for that matter, all mean that it will continue to happen. There is no answer that will completely stop it.

SIGH................

Barb,
I know. I love the sport and I love the Horses and all involved with it. I don't want to end racing, I'm just frustrated tonight.

So beautiful, so graceful, so damn fragile.

Dear jonna, and ALL,

Thank you for the update. The sad outcome is as I had feared.

NO ALLEGIANCE'S photo can be seen under his name at pedigreequery.com

Please remember him with Love and Honor. It was a thrilling race. He did good.

Thanking God that SNIFTERS SPIRIT is safe. I don't think that he was claimed today. So far, he is still owned by Schrum Racing Inc. He was at the front, most of the way, then faded in the last turn. I hope they are treating him kindly, and will give hi
