Barbaro Updates: 471

updates are now here.

Update 2908: A quick Nicanor update from Jill Stevens:

There is nothing really new and exciting. Nicanor is just getting the miles under his belt. He is feeling great and training well. On the mornings when the weather is a bit cooler, he loves it, and tends to get a bit playful...even when being ridden. That's a good thing, but we have to remind him that he's not a superstar yet!

Update 2907: Joe Clancy pays tribute to McDynamo: Commentary: Big MC.

Update 2906: A chilly 38 degree start to the day (I had to call Tim to see how cold it was at Fair Hill ... and it was not much colder) but when the sun came up it turned into a gorgeous day. We had ten sets again today, and I was last off the track before it closed at 10 am. As I was coming off the track off my seventh, the first after the break, I was just thinking how quiet everything was and no one had fallen off ... no sooner did I have the thought and the siren went off! We took a few to the gate. At one stage I was sat on my horse in the gate, to my left was Cash Asmussen on one of his horse's stood in the gate. I joked with him about if only my racing buddies in the UK knew who I was hanging out with these days! Anyway, all in all a pleasant morning's work.

Update 2905: Santa Anita's newly renovated Cushion Track performed well on its opening day without exhibiting any noticable bias: Santa Anita Opens and Records Fall. The Malibu, the marquee race for the opening day, was won by Johnny Eves for his first stakes win: Johnny Eves lands first stakes victory in Malibu.

Hiya, FsOB! Wishing each of you a superb Thursday. This weekend I'll be trying to reach Mayor Paula Bacon, in order to start a nomination for her for one of the Kennedy Library's 2008 Profiles in Courage Award. More details next week, in case anyone of you would like to send me an electronic letter of support to include.

#### To Brenda: Have a great time on your first riding lesson! ####

Good Thursday morning FOBs,

Brenda - I am delighted to hear your news. I can't wait for your report. Please relax and enjoy. I remember the first time I started lessons several years ago I felt immediately that I was finally where I was meant to be. It was something I wanted to do my whole life and never had the opportunity.

Robyn, I agree that Mayor Bacon certainly deserves the award.

Have a wonderful day everyone!!!!!

Sen. Byrd named PETA Person of the Year

http://www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=11041

Horse Slaughter Prevention Act Co-Author Named PETA Person of the Yearby: Erin Ryder, TheHorse.com News Editor December 26 2007, Article # 11041

Sen. Robert C. Byrd (D-W.Va.) was today named Person of the Year by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The group called the senior senator, "a tireless advocate for improving legal protection for animals, including animals who are slaughtered for food." Byrd coauthored the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act in 2005. The Act prohibited the transport, purchase, and sale of horses for human consumption. (The 109th Congressional session ended before the senate voted on the legislation- -for more information see www.TheHorse. com/ViewArticle. aspx?ID=8400. Lawmakers introduced a similar bill in January 2007.) Byrd also introduced a bill that would prohibit the commercial sale and slaughter of wild horses and burros. In 2002, Byrd led the charge to provide $5 million--a record amount--for improving enforcement of the Humane Slaughter Act. "Sen. Byrd is never shy about making his strong belief in the importance of animal protection heard," said PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk in a statement. "Much animal suffering has been alleviated thanks to Sen. Byrd, and this year we are proud to honor him for giving a voice to the voiceless."

BAD NEWS FROM CALIFORNIA....WE NEED TO BECOME MORE READY TO DEAL WITH SITUATIONS LIKE JOE AND CATHY DEAL WITH. BECAUSE THE END OF HS IS COMING IN 2008
AND DROUGHTS DON'T CARE...KNOW WHAT I MEAN?
############################################
Thursday, December 27th...
All the time we hear sad stories of abandoned horses. 2 and 3 times a week abandoned horses will be found in yards and driveways. Recently there have been horses roaming aimlessly around city streets. It takes little imagination to wonder what happens to these horses if Animal Control hauls them away.

And so Cathy and I have brought together a team of friends who will come for the homeless horse. These friends live in all parts of Northern California. If an abandoned horse is found near Elk Grove or Wilton, Jennifer Wright can be there in a flash. In the Contra Costa and San Francisco areas, Patti Lu, Rachel Jeffers or Paula Coombs will come with their trailers. Here in the Sacramento region, Jodi Tuft or Holly Meeks will pick up a lost horse faster than you can say Happy New Years. We have a young lady in Redding who wishes to remain private, but if a horse is abandoned in her city she will bring him to her ranch. We have 2 helpful people in Red Bluff. A man in Placerville. And a man in a town called Cool.

We have foster homes and safe houses where these abandoned horses will be well taken care of. Do not hesitatate to phone. My cell is 530-383-2120.

Here in the boonies dogs and cats are kicked out of cars and abandoned. Years ago we formed a group of dedicated pet lovers who continue to help these dogs and cats. And now it seems we must do the same for horses. The times we live in...

I sent Holly Meeks to the town of Rio Linda. The owner of a small house woke up to find a large horse munching on her dried up vegetable garden. The owner of the small house is not a fan of Animal Control. So she got on the internet and found Tbfriends under Horse Rescue. Holly Meeks transported the large horse to a foster family in Elverta. We did all the right things to make sure the large horse is not simply lost. But it now appears he was for sure abandoned.

We have access to 41 horses who need homes, or they will be put to sleep or sent to January auctions. The constant phone calls. Take my horse or else. We are hustling. Doing the best we can. But there are just too many doomed horses, and not enough homes.

more to come

re post by Kate Kujat in Canyon Lake TX at December 27, 2007 1:41 PM, who reported she was off to deal with a dog (collar, no tags) who jumped into her truck. OY I have had my share of rescuing dogs with a collar and no tags. I have several theories about this; for one thing, it's an owner's way of showing a stranger immediately that this was somebody's dog, not a dangerous feral one, while abandoning the dog for whatever convoluted reason; and in my fantasy world, these critters are "angels" or maybe X-File type shapeshifting aliens, and we are judged (and dealt with?) by how we treat them. I remember stories from mythology about gods who take the form of beggars and then reward those who are kind to them . . .

I want to hear more about this dog as the story develops. Thank you Kate for helping this critter, and it is obvious (to me, at least) that you have been "chosen."

The Washington Post has the year's top on-line discussion transcripts posted this week. One of them is the discussion with a NY racing track veterinarian on the day we lost Barbaro. It includes links to stories and photos. Reading it nearly a year later is still very, very hard.

Hay Fambleeeee

Thanks, Soc for your posts, which I've copied here.

PLEASE FAMBLEEEEE sign this petition. You don't have to look at Margaret's photos, they are horrific. Please trust that these horses and other animals (goats, llamas and who knows what else) are starving and shivering in an unheated barn with no water due to frozen/broken pipes. The proprietor of this "rescue" has a lovely sign on her fence in the front of the property touting all her "skills" in therapy/manipulation and various other alternative treatments, including consulting, etc., and meanwhile these animals are dying. Margaret was afraid some might not live through the night last night, as they are without blankets, and the only ones who give a damn are Margaret and her husband Pete, CHR who is helping in this endeavour, and various volunteers who have tried to get food to the animals and transport some of them out of these despicable conditions.

MaryL said last night that the Larimer Humane Society people sounded "tired" of all the calls they were receiving. That almost sent me over the edge. Horses are dying, freezing and starving, and these "humans" are tired of hearing about it? I was told yesterday "we're working on this as quickly as we can, within the law, and we have to complete our investigation before taking any action". That was a little after 8:00AM YESTERDAY, and meanwhile, it has become colder, the snow continues to fall, and some of the horses depicted in the photos will not survive any longer.

PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION PLEASE, FAMBLEEEEE These horses are dying. They came to this facility to be saved, and they're worse off now then they were when they were "rescued"

Re: Any news on The Tin Man lately?

Just got back from visiting Tinny at Santa Anita, & he looks better than ever! He continues to get walked outside often (sometimes with the bandages, sometimes without), & he appears to be just a really, really happy horse. His eyes are bright, his coat looks wonderful, & he has the same spirit he always had. From what I understand, as soon as he's fully recovered he's going to the Todds' ranch in Santa Ynez to live out the rest of his days. Thank you to the Mandella team for taking such great care of this beloved boy.

Hello all,

Just visiting to report that in a newsletter from the National Museum of Racing, an article states that an exhibit on equine medicine that will include references to Barbaro is being planned to open on July 20, 2008 at the museum in Saratoga Springs, NY. It will examine the problems Barbaro and Secretariat faced with laminitis, as well as the human love of the horse and the feelings that racehorses invoke as sports heroes. The exhibit is seeking public memorabilia connected to the injuries of prominent horses.

Barbaro at work, once again, to help raise awareness.

A happy new year to all.

I try to be an informed FOB; but somehow I missed this Oct. 15 Newsweek article.

http://www.newsweek.com/id/42536

This morning a co-worker mentioned that she had recently read it in a Doctor's waiting room. The quote below made quite an impression on her.

"Horse meat was considered mainstream enough for a 1951 Time magazine article to offer tips for cooking pot roast of horse and equine fillets. The killing stopped in 1971 after a federal act recognized mustangs as "living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West," banned their inhumane treatment and restricted their sale into slaughter."

I'm sure most of you have seen the article, but thought it might be worth bringing up again.

Most recent great update on The Tin Man,
crossposting from DB, posted by BarbaraF19

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=18063.18

Found this on CALRACING.COM FOR 12/27/07:

The Tin Man healing nicely

The Tin Man, the 9-year-old multi-millionaire, continues to heal from a fractured knee suffered in late October, and is being walked briefly each day as part of his rehabilitation, said Mandella, who trained him.

"He's getting better all the time," Mandella said. "We've got him walking short walks a couple of times a day. We're doing very little and it seems to be helping."

Mandella said that The Tin Man "started getting sour being tied up so much."

"He's sounder and happier every week," Mandella said. "We X-ray him every week and it shows knitting every week."

A winner of 13 of 31 starts and $3,663,780, The Tin Man suffered the injury while recovering from ankle surgery. As a result of the injury, The Tin Man was retired but remains at Mandella's stable at Santa Anita while recoverin[g]. [end of crosspost]

Kate here - I have not found the owner of the yellow lab as yet. However, I work with a wonderful bunch of people. While the lab slept under my desk all morning, the emails were flying. We checked all the shelters and vets in the area to no avail. One of the IT guys offered to foster him until we found his owner or a new forever home. Which shouldn't be long because several have already offered to adopt him. So this story has a happy ending. I have 9 rescued dogs at home (not including the horse and the pig :-) and have found homes for countless others. I would have taken him home except my husband is having surgery Saturday and I wouldn't want to leave him alone with the herd. Thanks for caring.

joe continued from this morning:
*****************************************************

And we can get into a whole other thing about hopeful homes who were turned down because their other animals look terrible. I never judge, I only move on. But people are angry because I turn them down. With all of these doomed horses needing somewhere to go, why not take a chance? Even if their other animals look neglected, why not let them care for one more horse?

Moving a horse from one terrible setting to another terrible setting is not the answer. And asking someone who cannot afford to feed the animals they have now, is also not the answer. My gratitude for your offers of help is sincere. But you must also understand our screening process. It is not better for a horse to move to another barely hanging on situation. It does not help you, and it certainly does not help the horse.

I love kids. Those of you who follow the morning journal know there are gobs of kids involved in our lives. And many of these kids have very little. I asked one young friend what she is getting for Christmas, and her answer was the sun coming up. No presents under the tree, because there is no tree. Her gift is to enjoy the miracle of another day. Cathy and I are involved with many families who struggle for money. One thing they all have in common, is their kids love horses. Not sure why this is, but horses seem to bring hope. Horses bring a sense of security. Horses make a kid feel like they belong. And there are parents who want their kids to own a horse, but of course the money is just not there. So I must say no. And I have alienated many parents. Which breaks my heart. Because I adore their kids.

And I have had several parents ask how can I refuse to give their daughters a horse? With all these doomed horses, why not just give us one?

Because there is no money for your daughters to even have a Christmas present. How are they going to feed a horse?

I am old enough to know that obstacles become part of the package. In the real world comes real horses. The expenses are enormous. We encourage your kids to love horses. They can still be with horses. They can still enjoy the magic. No need to feel bad because you cannot afford for your daughter to have her own horse. I can send her to other barns, where giving people will share their time. Where giving people will share their horses. Always there are avenues to explore. Horses could care less how much money you have. Horses love to be loved.

Joe

3 new recent arrivals from feed lots. On the top left is Monica, and she is a thoroughbred with a racing tattoo. Monica is 9 years old, and she ate all day from the old ranch truck.

On the top right is Mia, and she comes to us with facial fungus. Several recent horses from feed lots have arrived with this same fungus. Yuck. Mia has a racing tattoo which says she is 15 years old.

Bottom left, and we do not know his breed. But at the feed lot in Elk Grove I fell in love with him. We are naming him Celtic, and I have a feeling he is a quarter horse appendix cross. A very kind gelding.

A big Thank You to Friends Of Tbfriends, who bought us a 47 inch HD Flat Screen. I will list your names tomorrow, sorry, I rambled on and on about other things today. We ordered a HD receiver, and it will be here next week. Never again will I leave the couch.

Wyoming Horse, Rider Celebrate 1,000 Miles of Endurance Riding
by: The Associated Press
December 21 2007, Article # 11026

It's an unlikely story of a 25-year-old mare and her 62-year-old rider competing on the endurance ride circuit.

Over a seven-year span, the duo, starting at age 18 and 54 respectively, completed more than 1,000 miles. The horse is now semiretired.

Bonnie Swiatek of Laramie, Wyo., said she wanted to compete in the endurance rides because her husband Don had been competing. She went on a couple of non-sanctioned rides in the mid 1990s with a Tennessee Walker mare called Gleam.

In 1997, Swiatek decided to give the endurance riding a real go and began looking for the right horse. She said she had seen the trouble her husband had with his Tennessee Walker in the heat, so she began looking for an Arabian because they are thinner skinned, handle the heat better and are bred for long-distance riding.

She found a 16-year-old chestnut Arabian mare named Tala. Tala was trained at the age of 16 and 17 and the two competed for the first time in June 1999.

Swiatek admits she didn't really know what she was doing and started Tala out too fast on her first ride. She said when Tala stumbled she decided to pull the horse. Family commitments kept Swiatek and Tala off the circuit for the rest of 1999 and 2000.

Both were wiser and better conditioned in 2001 when the 1,000-mile journey began riding 41 American Endurance Ride Conference sanctioned races over seven years.

During the 2001 season, Swiatek and Tala completed 110 miles together, with a best finish of third, never finishing out of the top 10. The two had shortened seasons in 2002 and 2004, riding only 25 and 60 miles respectively.

They rode 130 miles together in 2003.

Swiatek said the two have learned a lot about endurance rides. Swiatek learned that it's a lot more technical than she realized. She said it is important to keep yourself and your horse as hydrated as possible before, during and after the ride.

She said she prepares by drinking V-8 a few days before the ride including the night before, the morning of, during the race and right after.

This season, Tala was fed a special senior feed and sugar beet pulp, Swiatek said. Swiatek also learned to wear appropriate clothing for the heat, taking tips from bicyclists and avoiding cotton, while Tala learned how to read the ribbons, usually bright orange or pink, which mark the trail.

"It's like having four eyes out there on the trail. She's an amazing old horse," Swiatek said.

The big push Swiatek said she and Tala made the big push these past three years in endurance rides, but she never expected to reach 1,000 miles when she started out in 1999.

She said when she first bought Tala she figured she would start riding with her and then look for a younger mare. Swiatek said she prefers mares because she's had nothing but trouble with geldings.

In 2005, Swiatek and Tala competed in nine rides covering 250 miles; the first time the duo topped 200 miles.

The duo competed in eight rides for 210 miles in 2006. Swiatek said she only competes in limited distance rides (25 to 30 miles) with Tala. The longest season was this year when the two competed in 10 rides covering 270 miles for a total of 1,055 miles.

Swiatek said they rode mainly for "completion" and not for place. She added that the motto for the AERC is "to finish is to win."

The 1,000-mile milestone came in August at the Colorado Horse Park Challenge. The duo rode 25 miles to put them at 1,005 miles that day. They finished in 13th place, completing the ride in three hours and 29 minutes.

Swiatek said an average ride for limited distance is four hours. Riders have six hours to complete the ride. The horse and rider have finished a few rides in 2 hours.

On Sept. 2, 2006, at the Colorado Horse Park Challenge, the duo finished in first place in 2 hours, 33 minutes. Tala was also honored as the best conditioned horse. The mare also won best conditioned in 2005 at the Black Hills I & II ride where Swiatek and Tala finished third. To finish first was an amazing feat, Swiatek said, because she and Tala are competing against much younger horses and riders.

To be honored as best conditioned twice in her career is also amazing, Swiatek said, since most horses are retiring at age 18, the same age Tala was when she started.

"She loves it. Obviously she was bred for it," Swiatek said.

Swiatek said that just this season, Tala started showing signs of aging. Tala will likely stay retired but she may go on a few endurance rides next season. Swiatek said since they ended their season in September, Tala will give her a look and then look out at the wide-open country, ready for a long ride.

Preparing for Tala's eventual retirement, Don and Bonnie purchased two mares that are the likely heirs apparent to Tala - a 10-year-old gray named Skylark and an 11-year-old black bay named Rocket.

Swiatek grew up a city girl in Lombard, Ill. At the age of 12 her sister married and lived on a farm. Swiatek would visit her sister in the summers and learned to ride a horse then. After the age of 15, Swiatek went 10 years without a horse.

She purchased her first horse when she and Don lived in Tucson, swapping her old car for a horse at the age of 25. She said she always had a love for horses, reading every horse book she could get her hands on.

She especially loved the stories by Mary O'Hara and told her mother one day she would live on a ranch in Wyoming. It took nearly half her life, but she and Don arrived in Wyoming when she was 51. She said she was fortunate to work on a ranch next to O'Hara's ranch for a short time.

For 12 years while in Laramie, Swiatek had plenty of horses while the couple raised Tennessee Walkers. Now they are down to four horses, Sage, Don's horse; and Bonnie's three mares, Tala, Rocket, and Skylark.

Bonnie said when she first began looking for a horse she was looking for an Arabian, but truthfully she was looking for a short horse. Most of the horses she has ridden were 15 hands high. Tala is 14 hands. Skylark and Rocket are slightly taller than Tala.

"I look for short, safe, steady, and smart," Swiatek said.

To celebrate Bonnie and Tala's 1,000-mile achievement, a party was thrown for them at the couple's home in September. Bonnie said many of her supporters were in attendance, including Barbara Burns, whom she rides with to stay in condition with; her trainers, her husband Don, Jack Evers and Bob Atherton; and Sheri Olson and Gary Brown, her teammates this season on team rides.

Hiya, FsOB! Thank you, Alex, for posting the update about Nicanor. Now I have what may seem a goofy question: When will Barbaro's Baby Bro be named officially? Does that happen on or after 01/01/2008, when he turns one year old (in racing's age system)? I can't remember exactly when Nicanor was named. I thought it was prior to Bobbey's death on 01/29/2007. Wishing each of you restful slumbers tonight, especially our dear FOB Verna. RMH

#### To CJ: I'll try to reach Mayor B. on Sunday. I need to recheck the Kennedy Library's nominations materials this weekend, but I believe that the portfolio would need to be sent in prior to the end of February. If Mayor B. gives me the go-ahead, I'll post an update next week (one way or another). Perhaps then you might let me know what would be needed to put a thread on the DB? I can be a bit of a dolt about things like that. I am thrilled that you are still interested.
To Kate K: Great work you and your friends did to help the abandoned yellow Lab today.
To Hilary: Thank you for checking with Verna, please let her know that we miss her and are sending positive energy to her. Verna is a dear soul.

This article mentioned on the DB. Photo. etc.
sometimes....sometimes I am not sure I was meant to live in this world. What is wrong with people. I thought people in this part of the world REVERRED the horse....OK. So NOW I am going to bed. I can't think anymore.

Dear Lord we lift up the brief lives of these animals to you, you who made the glory of the horse.

We know that you allowed them entry into your glorious Heaven in the company of Barbaro and Ruffian and all the great and the small who have left our world to be at your side.

In the name of your son, brought to the world in this season of cold and brightness, we ask this tonight.

Questions Raised about Dead Horses Dumped Outside Kuwait Equestrian Clubs
by: Christa Lest้-Lasserre
December 21 2007, Article # 11018

At least 14 horses have been found dead in front of two equestrian centers in Kuwait, according to Kuwaiti news reports, an animal protection organization, and a local resident. Many of the horses appear to have died from gunshot wounds to the head or lethal injection.

Horse carcasses in various states of decay were found abandoned in the sand outside the perimeters of the Ahmadi Governorate Equestrian Club (AGEC) and the Farwaniyah Governorate Equestrian Club (FGEC) in January and October, respectively, The Arab Times and Alam Al Yawm (a local newspaper) reported. Some of the horses were still wearing racing bandages, and some were bound with ropes.

PAWS discovered more than a dozen dead horses outside the Ahmadi Governate Equestrian Center.

"It appeared to be a battle scene, and the horses had lost," said Meghan McCabe, an American resident of Kuwait and a horse enthusiast. McCabe discovered the carcasses in front of the AGEC in January and notified the media and the Protecting Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), a group operating in Kuwait.

The PAWS team found a fresh carcass the morning after a racing night, showing "clear signs that his death was not humane, gentle, or easy," said Barbara O'Neill, a PAWS representative, suggesting that horse owners might kill their horses as a response to poor performance or following a debilitating injury.

However, Abdullah Al-Haddad, owner of El Janah Stud, which is housed in the AGEC, denied such claims.

"Our religion and culture forbid the killing of any animal except for rare reasons such as serious infection or diseases," he said. Al-Haddad said the horses found outside the AGEC probably succumbed to colic or respiratory disease.

Alam Al Yawm reported that the horses at the FGEC might have died from contaminated feed or as a result of infectious disease.

Al-Haddad said horses that die within the AGEC facility must be transferred to a proper disposal site by the owner.

But, Al-Haddad noted, many horse owners tie the dead horses up and use a car to pull them off the Club grounds. The area beside the main road is managed by the municipality and has scheduled clean-ups for garbage. Al-Haddad said the photos of the found carcasses show landmarks that indicate the horses had been dumped too far away from the public area, and the municipality clean-up crew might have overlooked them.

In response to media coverage of the carcass discoveries, a marking method to identify horses and regular stable checks were established by the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources in January, but thus far the new measures have not been enforced, O'Neill said.

"I am sorry to see that this has happened in our country and in our horse club," Al-Haddad said. "We hope the AGEC will assist owners in disposing of their dead horses using respectful methods."

Lynne,

Snowing in the foothills in California means it's REALLY COLD! Here in San Jose, it's raining and cold 45 degrees and the wind is picking up. Nasty stuff. Nothing compared to the Mid-West cold. We're just not used to it! A good time to warm up to a good book. Chicken Soup for Horse Lover's Soul...how I wish we could save them all.
Something to work for.
To all in need of comfort and peace...many prayers and healing wishes.

The sun is going to shine another day and at least ONE good thing always happens to us during the day. A favorite commercial, driving to the store with NO red lights.

Little things add up. Look for the good cause, trust me, you really don't want more bad stuff.

Take care all...the horses need us.
