    Barbaro Updates: 459

    updates are now here.

    Update 2856: And again: Live racing canceled at Beulah Park for Wednesday.

    Update 2855: Zia Park in New Mexico, which I can honestly say I had not heard of until Pat Valenzuela was there on his latest comeback, is also home of Pepper's Pride who is chasing the modern day record of an undefeated career. She has won all thirteen of her starts at this point: Top Zia Park Horses Announced.

    Update 2854: A bit of a grotty morning this morning at Sam Houston Race Park. We had eight sets, six before the break and two after the break. It was a muggy start with threatening clouds, then it downpoured later on. We took five sets to the gate and all to stand. All my horses went nicely and without incident. Not so for everybody. Jockey Paul Nolan took a spill this morning and is a little body sore. No real damage though, i think his horse whipped around a little quickly. One of our riders came off coming onto the track. Unfortunately for him it had started raining pretty hard and he got pretty muddy through the process. Again, he does not seem any worse for the experience. Nice to get back and have a hot shower!

    Update 2853: Ohio is forming a group to help push the business interests of the horsemen in the State: Ohio Forms KEEP-Like Coalition. Kentucky has a similar organization, KEEP, which recently raised significant money through a stallion season auction: KEEP Raises Nearly $4 Million.

    Please keep calling and writing.

    Morning skritches to the BBH, Sir JH, Gorgeous Geo. and all of the rest of the incredibly wonderful gang up there in Equine Heaven.

    As for down here (once again, pls note the new info...)

    MORNING POST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI

    STRATEGY FOR WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 12

    IMPORTANT NEW INFORMATION………

    According to contacts, the following seven senators are objecting to the anti slaughter language as it presently stands. These are not necessarily people who will vote with us and our main goal in calling them is not to get their support but to get them to remove their objections so that we can move forward.

    Dec 11th Target List

    Those who voted in support of the Ensign-Byrd Amendment Senate (2005) but have not yet cosponsored the bills

    Robert F. Bennett – UT Phone: 202-224-5444 Fax: 202-228-1168 Aide: Tyler Owens

    Ben Nelson - NE Phone : 202-224-6551 Fax : 202-228-0012

    Those who voted NAY on Ensign-Byrd Amendment Senate (2005).

    Wayne Allard – CO Phone: 202-224-5941 Fax: 202-224-6471

    Larry E. Craig – ID Phone: 202-224-2752 Fax: 202-228-1067

    Sam Brownback – KS Phone: 202-224-6521 Fax: 202-228-1265

    Byron L. Dorgan – ND Phone: 202-224-2551 Fax: 202-224-1193

    Tim Johnson – SD Phone: 202-224-5842 Fax: 202-228-5765

    As per my conversation with Daryl, the pro slaughter people are really stepping up their phone calls. We must make sure that our numbers are stronger. Along with today’s list, please call your own Senators and reps if they have not yet committed their support.

    Remember…..WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE…….let it be heard.

    I was reading through last year's posts at this time. Alex was visiting Barbaro and commented they had cut his tail very short,Dr Morrison was coming to fit Barbaro with new shoes. We were all so full of hope..I found in the posts a poem I wrote, thought I'd re-post..happier days..bittersweet memories...

    Barbaro & Santa

    Barbaro was in his stall but feeling a little down

    Everyone was singing carols about Santa coming to town

    I sure wish Santa would come to see me he said

    As he laid down gingerly on his fluffy straw bed

    Santa heard Barbaro so to NBC he came

    Bringing with him gifts for everyone and lots of peppermint candy canes

    When it came time to see Barbaro down in ICU

    Santa knew exactly what he had to do

    He donned scrubs over his red suit and paper covers over his boots

    Over his white beard he put a mask

    all of this without being asked

    He went to every unit greeting everyone by name

    All the doctors and staff and every animal he treated the same

    He finally got to his destination, the stall of the Big Bay

    He really was interested in what Barbaro had to say

    Barbaro said Santa, I'm sure glad you came by

    I need a special favor and if you come close I'll tell you why

    You see I have a little problem,I've been too embarrassed to mention

    What I really want for Christmas,Is a tail hair extension

    I take my morning walk with as much dignity as I can muster

    But it's hard to look like the stud I am with a tail like a feather duster!

    And when they take me out to graze and the cold wind hits my backside..

    Well all I can say is I need a tail long enough to cover up my"pride"

    I know they sell extensions I see them catalogs all the time

    But I don't have a computer so I can't order online

    They treat me like a king here, so I don't want to complain

    Dr R and all the staff have done everything to keep me from being lame

    But when I think about the ladies my ego starts to sag

    Who'd want a stud who looks like a bob-tailed nag

    Now Santa was nodding..so glad his mask was in place

    Because it was taking a supreme effort to keep a straight face

    Barbaro,don't you worry, I'll grant your wish

    For Christmas you'll get extensions and a tail you can swish!!

    Barbaro was so happy he nickered in delight

    Merry Christmas FOB's, God Bless and Good Night..

    Harriette, finding that chocolate delivery was cruel and unusual punishment...I know I would have done the honest thing, but oh, the temptation to do otherwise...it reminds me of the time I was driving to Chicago, got gas on the turnpike and realized the gas station had set the WRONG price - instead of $1.39, they had it at $.13 cents a gallon. I was honest - my son was with me and watching every move I made.

    Everybody have a wonderful day.

    Good morning from DC:
    As I have mentioned, there is a lot of momentum for S. 311. I have heard many nice responses from offices on the grassroots efforts. Yes, we have made an impact! This is an amazing group!!

    The pro- laughter (Not a mis-print: pro-slaughter people are nothing but a laugh) people, including the American Farmers Union, AQHA and others have stepped up their efforts. So we step up ours.
    In addition, Cavel has decided to appeal to the Supreme Court! What does that mean? Who knows? Many theories could surround this one, but it appears, on the surface, that it is another missile thrown out, in high profile, to coordinate with all the other efforts from the pro side. Remember, where dollars are to be found, souless people will do anything to get their share.
    I, for one, will not let this information deter me. I, we, have the most powerful tool in the world. It's called, "Truth!" And that tool has carried us this far, and no one, no group is going to undo the accomplishments and gains. I believe, that in the end, it's that "Truth" that will prevail and our horses will be safe from this insidious practice.
    I showed a Chief Of Staff pictures of two horses from the Illinois accident. He shook his head, obvious disgust. My statement to him: "Do you know what that is? That's human failure! That is your failure! That is my failure! And that is the failure of your senator and every member of this congress! We are letting these animals down. The horse helped us build this nation, today serves us in police departments all across the land and in our military. America is more than this, we are capable of more than this. And it's time we live up to our responsibility as caretakers of this nation and do the right thing. End horse slaughter because America's horses have earned the right to an honorable and dignified death!"

    As long as our horses are tethered to this political system (fake democracy?) we have to realize it will take hard work and resolve. I will never go away. I will not go to my grave with this. Barbaro's brothers and sisters will be free. I am embarrassed that this goes on in our country, and it makes me feel like a failure. And I do not fail. I have a sore foot from kicking the doors of congress. But I have another foot and two fists. And a forehead! And I'll use them all.

    Okay, time for work. That's my roll call! What's yours? Please, remember the reason why we are here! Barbaro! Let his blood run through your veins.

    Daryl

    Today will be a cake walk, we have the fax cover sheets from yesterday. Will save on the ink too. I plan on changing the letter and address the senators objecting to the anti slaughter language as it presently stands. It's the transport I believe.
    Happy faxing, calling everyone!

    Harriette bittersweet memories indeed. We all were talking about where Barbaro would go, when he got out of NBC. Happy days!

    Thanks Alex, if not for you we wouldn't be here!
    We wouldn't be stopping slaughter.

    Posted by: jonnagrey at December 12, 2007 1:59 PM

    Jeez Daryl - you have my vote if you intend to run for President.

    Please know that I will fight horse slaughter till my dying day (hopefully it won't take that long) and I'm not just saying that. Commitment is something that runs through my veins. Thankfully there are many, many other FOBs who share that same commitment to ending this brutal, cruel, indecent practice. Also, there are others out there (non FOBs) who have been fighting this for years. I learned of horse slaughter before I even knew of Barbaro. Unfortunately, I don't have the time I wish I had to knock on the doors of Congress with you (full time job, disabled husband), but I will never go away either.

    I don't but I do berlieve this. We need to shake those Senators and have them listen to the facts and see. Damn Tucker!!!!! grrrrrrrr

    Jonna,
    Now!

    Well Folks,

    This is about the last thing in the world we expected. I just got through explaining to some of our folks that Cavel would not appeal further for several reasons. For one, the Texas plants appealed to the Supreme Court and were rejected. For another, they would be unlikely to get a TRO to let them resume slaughtering while the case was pending. I explained that to get a TRO you need to show that there will be irreparable harm if you have to close your business, and you must show you have a better than negligible chance of success.

    Since Cavel has been closed for months and has operations in Canada, the irreparable harm argument seems a huge stretch. And since the court has already rejected the Texas appeal, it would seem on the surface that they had not chance. The really worrisome thing is that they are apparently going to try after all this time. That tells me that either their lawyers did a great sales job on them, or they know something we don't.

    I wish I could tell you more. It is even possible that this is just disinformation to divert our energy. I don't even understand why would they announce at this time. There are a lot of questions and not many answers that make sense. In any case, there is nothing we can do to affect this, so I suggest we stay focused on the AHSPA.

    John

    Horse Slaughtering Plant Plans Appeal
    Reported by: Christine Long

    Tuesday, Dec 11, 2007 @08:17pm CST

    DeKalb, IL – Operators of a horse slaughtering plant in DeKalb that was shut down in September plan to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

    Phil Calabrese, an attorney who represents Cavel International, says he plans to send a request in January to the Supreme Court for permission to appeal. The deadline is January 18th.

    Cavel's facility in DeKalb was the last horse slaughtering plant in the country when it closed in September.

    It unsuccessfully appealed a federal district court decision. That decision upheld a bill signed by Governor Rod Blagojevich in May banning the import, export, and slaughter of horses in Illinois for human consumption.

    The company claims the ban is unconstitutional violating interstate and foreign commerce rules since the meat is shipped overseas.

    “It’s a question of national importance that implicates the foreign relations of the United States,” says Calabrese.

    Earlier this year the Supreme Court refused to hear a similar request by two Texas horse slaughter houses closed by legal bans.

    Are these people nuts or just plain STUPID? These are our AMERICAN Horses. Hell that meat belongs to the horses and on their bodies just as they were born. I am so mad right now I could spit and yell.

    "Let Me Teach You" (A Touching Equine Poem)
    --Author Unknown

    When you are tense, let me teach you to relax.
    When you are short tempered, let me teach you to be patient.
    When you are short sighted, let me teach you to see.
    When you are quick to react, let me teach you to be thoughtful.
    When you are angry, let me teach you to be serene.
    When you feel superior, let me teach you to be respectful.
    When you are self absorbed, let me teach you to think of greater things.
    When you are arrogant, let me teach you humility.
    When you are lonely, let me be your companion.
    When you are tired, let me carry the load.
    When you need to learn, let me teach you.
    After all, I am your horse.

    ****And now, the REAL story........****

    When you are tense, let me teach you that there are lions in the woods, and we need to leave NOW!!!!!!!!!!!.

    When you are short tempered, let me teach you how to slog around the pasture for an hour before you can catch me.
    When you are shortsighted, let me teach you to figure out where, exactly, in 40 acres I am hiding.
    When you are quick to react, let me teach you that herbivore's kick MUCH faster than omnivores.

    When you are angry, let me teach you how well I can stand on my hind feet, because I don't FEEL like cantering on my right lead today, that's why.

    When you feel superior, let me teach you that, mostly, you are the maid service.
    When you are self-absorbed, let me teach you to PAY ATTENTION. I TOLD you about those lions in the woods.
    When you are arrogant, let me teach you what 1000 lbs of YAHOO-let's-go suitably inspired filed hunter can do.
    When you are lonely, let me be your companion. Let's do lunch. Also, breakfast and dinner.
    When you are tired, let me remind you of the 600 lbs of grain that needs to be unloaded.
    When you are feeling financially secure, let me teach you the meaning of "Veterinary Services, additional".
    When you need to learn, hang around, Buddy. I'll learn you.

    Good morning,

    Just a thought when reading the articles on the Kentucky and Ohio KEEP fundraising efforts. If that much money can be raised through a stallion auction, why not organize one for Horse Rescue or Laminitis Research. Even a fraction of 4 million raised for thes causes would certainly have a profund effect.

    Hi Everbuddy at ABR,

    My name is *MISTER* and I have a half-sister named ROSIE…our Ladeeeattafens was talking to me the othur day, telling me how she just loves when the horssesss write letters to you all at UnkleAlex’s place…and she wished she had a horse who could write. I told her WE are as close to having a horse of her own, so why couldn’t we write for her? She thought that was a pretty great idea….Rosie and I talked about it, and she is kinda shy, so I will do the writing.

    Ladeeeattafens told us allllllll about *BARBARO*, I think he’s a really cool dude! My sister thinks he is ‘dreeeeemy’ whatever that means!

    Our Ladeee also told us about all of you nissse peeples writing ledders and calling and sending somethings called ‘faxxxxesss’….I don’t know ‘bout those, but anyway, she said you all are working VERY hard to help save horsesssssss! She told us about how some horsessssss go in a big truck and end up at very BAD places where the peeples are MEAN…We don’t know about that, ‘cause our Mommy and Daddy love us VERY much and when we go in our trailer, it’s because we are going on a adventure into the country.

    Our Mommy and Daddy take us at least one time a week, we are very lucky, ‘cause we only have to be in the trailer for a few minutes…..then we get out and go lonnnnnnnngggg ways, around the big lake and up and down all the hills. We see realllllly neat stuff, too. Sumetimes our parunts allow US to ‘choose the roote’ and THEN it’s REALLY FUNNNNNN! WHEEEEEEEE!!!

    We came here to live a few years ago. Before, we lived somewhere called Missouri, 'cause we are Missouri Foxtrotters:) It was REAL COLD there:/ Then we came to the ranch a few pastures from here. Our Mommy decided she wanted to get us to come live with her and our Daddy. She gave our othur Daddy a pretty cool little red sports car, and then we got to come live here.

    We didn’t know about saddles or bridles or ANYTHING, but our Mommy and Daddy learned all 'bout that ‘stuff’ and then taught us…we had a kinda ‘horsey skool’ togethur, all forrr of us…..It was FUNNNNNNN!

    Our ladeee said after *BARBARO* went to Hevvin, she noticed us in our BIG PASTURE and stopped to ask our Daddy if she could give us some carits and appuls sometimes…..THANKFULLY, our Daddy said, “SURE”…’cause we just LOVE it when our Ladeee stops by to visit.

    Our Ladeee really does love us, ‘specially *ME*, I can tell. She calls me her ’Boyfren’…She ‘specially likes when I play with her hair and I have so much FUN watching her ‘MELT’ when I look her in the eyes. She is a GREAT FREN, ‘cause she ALWAYS ‘skritches’ my butt…ya know, it’s HARD to skritch your own HORSEY BUTT!!! And I just loveeee giving her HORSEY HUGGGGSSSSS, too. She gets SOOOOOOO EXCITED when I do that…shucks…I like it TOOOO.

    Well, everbuddy, I just wanted to write this ledder to you and tell you all Merry Christmas, and thanks so much for workin’ so hard to help all those horseys who need the help!

    Luv, *MISTER* and my Sissster, ROSIE:)

    Wednesday, December 12th...
    Melanie Cox is 18, and she lives in Orangevale. Melanie has been reading the morning journal for 3 years, and it was last week when Melanie phoned to say she would like to help. Melanie said send her a horse who is hungry. Well okay then. An old quarter horse mare in Nevada City needed immediate attention. The mare was living in a field, eating only old straw and weeds. It has been years since her feet and teeth were touched. The mare is now in a warm stall, and a big Thank You to Holly Meeks for providing the transportation. Melanie Cox says this will be the best Christmas ever. Five nights in a row Melanie has sat with the old mare, reasurring her over and over life will now be better. Her teeth are to be floated later today. She has brand new feet. A big warm blanket. A tub of hot mash. The best Christmas ever, and Thank You so very much Melanie.

    Jordan Pruitt is 13, and she earned $100.00 by taking care of a little dog next door. Her neighbors were on vacation, so Jordan had to walk and feed the dog. Jordan told her mom lets go to Wal Mart. Jordan bought $50.00 in dog food and delivered it to a rescue shelter. With the other $50.00 Jordan bought a money order, and mailed it to Cathy and I. There was a note saying please use this money to feed a starving horse. On the phone with Jordan Pruitt, and Jordan says this will be the best Christmas ever because she feel so darn happy.

    Lindsey Bowman is 12, and she says this will be the best Christmas ever because her Jack Russell dog named Jack has recovered from a tumor. Jack is just fine, and Lindsey wants me to shout out to the world how much she loves him. Jack has a warm comfy bed on the floor, but he waits for Lindsey to fall asleep and then climbs in her bed and cuddles close.

    Per Daryl (read below) - pls call

    Senator Mark Pryor (AR) 202-224-2353

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    crossposting [excerpts] from ABR Comments:
    reposting ... IMO this is a worthy extra call to make today [AND EVERY DAY UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE]. CJ
    Roll Call!
    Reporting for duty!
    Here's a report from a meeting I had with Senator Mark Pryor's people yesterday. [Monday]
    This senator is animal sensitve. He has voted for animal protection legislation in the past. His aide said the senator "....feels the courts made the right decision to shut down the slaughterhouses!" There is a real possibility for a YES vote here. But I was told the pro-slaughter people are calling more than our side. And calls do count! So, yes, pedal to the metal......calls, e-mails and faxes are really critical here.
    The senator also feels all animals should be put down humanely, another great sign. So, why hasn't he he co-sponsored? He is looking at all aspects, listening to his constituents, etc. As I mentioned, the pro side is out performing us....so we need to turn this around!
    As you can see, there is a lot of positives here. Let's push hard to get this done!
    There is alot of conversation about S. 311 in DC. It is on the radar screens. Please keep it there! And if you haven't, please read Deb's and Shelley's strategy list today. They have identified seven senators who are objecting to some of the language in the bill. Target these senators. This is important!
    Okie dokie, off to wear out another pair of shoes!
    Daryl
    Senator Mark Pryor (Ar) 202-224-2353
    crossposting from the DB, comment 10 of the above thread:
    Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has or will contact Sen. Pryor's office. Our Arkansas call group here is very small and there is major Ag interest here. A lot of the state is rural/farming. We've sent tons of info to his office but we need more voices. I think we may have a real shot here with Pryor...if not a cosponsor at least a "yes" vote. From what Daryl said...pro slaughter is kicking our butt with calls/faxes/emails! So any help is appreciated! Thanks...Tamme
    ########## regarding Post by Padme (Lyn Gilbert) at December 12, 2007 1:27 PM about not taking advantage of the mismarked gasoline price, thus setting a fine example for her son:
    Many many years ago (I was not yet in high school) my grandmother found a piece of jewelry (an elaborate brooch) in the gutter in Chicago's loop. Though it looked like costume jewelry, she knew about how stones are set and was sure it was a valuable piece. She took it home and ran ads in the Chgo newspapers and the owner was found, who insisted on paying a generous reward (apparently it was very valuable). My family took that money and bought me a gold and pearl watch, with these words engraved on the back:
    Honesty Is The Best Policy.
    Dear Frens,
    I received an e-mail from the Humane Society. It was a sweet, heartwarming video that showed some of the many faces saved, and how the HS has helped animals. One fleeting image was of the white mare.
    The Young Prince has met her. Her message, through him, to us begs again, to be heard.
    Please pardon the indulgence of this long post. There are no accidents, and I do believe that the song of the white mare, and the Young Prince's encounter with her, will help, somehow, in our efforts to save them.
    From ONLY A MOMENT:
    ... Soon they arrived, and gathered all around, forming a huge circle, with him at the center. Big, bold bay faces, delicate chestnuts with lovely white blazes, dappled greys with wide black eyes, just-plain-browns of every size, pintos, white, black and brown, and palominos all circled around. Even a plump flaxen maned Shetland, and his two black companions, several buxom mules and four fuzzy brown burrows, joined the ranks of the hundreds of horses gathered around the Young Prince.
    Everyone's ears were pricked forward, standing at attention, and smiling at him with lips pulled back in big toothy grins. They quivered with excitement, and stomped just a bit as the circle formation completed its lineup. Then everyone settled down.
    Directly in front of him, the circle parted, and through the space stepped a small white mare. Her coat was the color of a thunderhead about to burst with rain. The white did not gleam, instead it glimmered. The soft greyish-white was flecked with bright specks of flint-like silver, and highlights of blue. Her deep brown eyes were rimmed with black, and the Young Prince observed that the skin under her white coat was also black. There was a faint hint of pale pink on her underbelly, and at the tip of her nose. Her kind eyes peeked out from under a silky white forelock that brushed past them and caressed her cheek. She was not a thoroughbred. She was what the people in the otherplace would call a "grade horse," Never the less, she was lovely.
    As she stood, smiling sweetly at the Young Prince, he could see that she was a bit excited and was doing her best to remain dignified and composed. He smiled back at her, wishing to put her at ease, even though he too was curiously excited, and eager to find out what this grand display was all about.
    With feet planted squarely, back straight, head and tail held high, she took a deep breath and said,
    "Oh Great Prince of the Most Beloved, we are so happy that you have come. We have remained together so that we may honor you in this way."
    With carefully measured graceful steps, she slowly turned around, and said,
    "May I present...The 400!"
    All the horses turned to their right in unison, and began to prance around in the circle, each one singing his or her names and titles as they passed before the Young Prince. The music grew in multi layered exquisite harmonies from the songs of the hearts of The 400. It was a melody of poignant sweetness with a recurring refrain. As it grew, the song became a symphony, and the prancing, a ballet. The music rose from the circle right up to the blue canopy above. The little white cloud was caught in the vibration, and seemed to circle above the Young Prince, as they sang. The parade went round and round, like God's own carousel.
    The song went into the soul of the Young Prince. It filled his heart, caught his breath, and brought a lump to his throat. He began to prance in a circle of his own, around the white mare who stood, with her eyes closed. She was singing a different song with lyrics and melody in perfect counter-rhythm to the song-of-names. She sang,
    " We have walked through the blood of the great betrayal
    We waited and hoped, but nobody came.
    Were it not for your frens, we would be forgotten.
    We are remembered, and all in your name."
    " Our hearts cried out as we were driven through the blood.
    We waited and hoped for help to arrive.
    But bad men closed their hearts and would not listen
    When your frens begged them to keep us alive."
    "The rivers that they cried washed the blood from our feet
    As we stepped from the pain, into the light.
    The tears that they shed at the news of our passing
    Magnify the joy that we know as flight."
    " Love had drawn them to you, and, for your sake, to us.
    When hope was gone, the frens gathered to pray.
    Then Angels held our heads and made fear disappear.
    With grateful hearts, we honor you...and them,
    This da-a-a-a-a-a-y."
    As her last note rang out, it became the top note of the most magnificent chord. Then the other voices went silent, and her lone note reached for the bright sky above.
    The horses of the great circling herd found each of their own original places, and again, stood at attention before the Young Prince. He continued to prance in his own circle around the white mare. His heart song was offering memories of the loving frens who covered him with comfort in his own time of pain and confusion. He felt, deeply their own need for comfort AT THIS VERY MOMENT. He had an urgent need to keep them and share them, all at the same time. Their faces, many of which he had never actually seen in the realm of the otherplace were clear to him. They were there at the edge of the circle that he now danced around the white mare, within the fold of The 400. The faces still had tears...tears that he wished to dry with the wind of his swift, joyful running, so they would know, that everything is alright, and that they too are remembered with honor in Thisgoodplace.
    "Great Prince"...(his hoof beats slowed)... "Great Prince," he heard a soft voice say. It was the white mare who was standing on the ground, looking up at him. He seemed to see her as from high up in the sky, looking down onto the buttercup meadow.
    The 400 faces still smiled as they stood at attention looking up at him. With the wish of one thought, he was standing on the ground next to the white mare, and smiling back at them. They neighed one last collective salute, bowed in unison, and were then dismissed by the white mare.
    The circle was now broken, as they walked off and formed groups of grazers, here and there upon the meadow. The "breaking" was done with subtle ceremonial significance, as a form of closure to the tragedy of the betrayal. It signified a matter-of-fact acknowledgment of the exquisite state of simply being "horse."
    Some of them walked up to the Young Prince and touched noses with him. The burros drew near, in their own little group, and did a silly kicky dance. The Young Prince did an imitation of their dance, which made every one laugh, as they invited his play. He liked the sound of their laughter. The Young Prince felt happy in the company of The 400. Soon, most everyone settled into their grazing and the white mare once more approached the Young Prince
    They began to walk together, and as they did she thanked him again. She told him that although she was not of the original 400, she, and many others did share their fate. She had been appointed to sing the song because so many of his frens honored her image, and now held her in their dreams. She was sorry that they would remember her like that. She would rather they know that she is OK now, and walking in a buttercup meadow, with the Great Prince. ...
    ...Lovingly submitted, to encourage we FOBs in our fight. For the sake of the voiceless ones, and for our beloved BARBARO's legacy.
    Your FOB Fren, O ^-,^
    This came from another student: I want to create a clear and wide path, and leave a beautiful trail behind me.
    Extra Wednesday 12/12 Nat'l Target List (HAHS)
    PREFACE/Heads-Up - per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/ request: Ask the Senators who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Senator Mary Landrieu, sponsor and promoter of the Bill.
    Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.
    IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. (Links to their two latest antislaughter releases are in the thread referenced at the bottom of this Post.)
    If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).
    800-828-0498
    800-459-1887
    800-614-2803
    You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net
    AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators. (NOTE NEW SUGGESTION/CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE Prior HS History above the LIST OF SENATORS below.)
    1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.
    2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.
    3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.
    4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.
    5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators. [NOTE - hidden portion of this post, in following post.]
    Rhetorial Question Du Jour:
    ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
    Here is today's (Wednesday 12/12) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.
    Don't forget to mention S 311 to the Senators and HR 503 to the Representatives; ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the current/new ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.
    Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind.
    The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.
    PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."
    Adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:
    "Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311.     AFTERNOON REPOST
    STRATEGY FOR WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 12
    IMPORTANT NEW INFORMATION………
    According to contacts, the following seven senators are objecting to the anti slaughter language as it presently stands. These are not necessarily people who will vote with us and our main goal in calling them is not to get their support but to get them to remove their objections so that we can move forward.
    Dec 11th Target List
    Those who voted in support of the Ensign-Byrd Amendment Senate (2005) but have not yet cosponsored the bills
    Robert F. Bennett – UT Phone: 202-224-5444 Fax: 202-228-1168 Aide: Tyler Owens
    Ben Nelson - NE Phone : 202-224-6551 Fax : 202-228-0012
    Those who voted NAY on Ensign-Byrd Amendment Senate (2005).
    Wayne Allard – CO Phone: 202-224-5941 Fax: 202-224-6471
    Larry E. Craig – ID Phone: 202-224-2752 Fax: 202-228-1067
    Sam Brownback – KS Phone: 202-224-6521 Fax: 202-228-1265
    Byron L. Dorgan – ND Phone: 202-224-2551 Fax: 202-224-1193
    Tim Johnson – SD Phone: 202-224-5842 Fax: 202-228-5765
    As per my conversation with Daryl, the pro slaughter people are really stepping up their phone calls. We must make sure that our numbers are stronger. Along with today’s list, please call your own Senators and reps if they have not yet committed their support.
    Remember…..WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE…….let it be heard.
    Okay, quiz: How low can you go? I just left Senator Kyl's office. Fundamental question: Are you getting a lot of calls on S. 311? For? Against? The answer was a lot of calls, most for the bill. However, the person said lately he has received many calls against the bill from people with an accent....perhaps Australian! I asked if it was the same person making many calls and he said he wasn't sure but could be. Hired guns!! How cute!
    So there's some humor........and we have picked up our campaign because everyone I've spoken to have said the call volume is increasing! Let's keep it up! Great work! And remember, when you call, NO ACCENTS! LOL!
    ##
    Hi Everbuddy at ABR,
    My name is *MISTER* and I have a half-sister named ROSIE…our Ladeeeattafens was talking to me the othur day, telling me how she just loves when the horssesss write letters to you all at UnkleAlex’s place…and she wished she had a horse who could write. I told her WE are as close to having a horse of her own, so why couldn’t we write for her? She thought that was a pretty great idea….Rosie and I talked about it, and she is kinda shy, so I will do the writing.
    Ladeeeattafens told us allllllll about *BARBARO*, I think he’s a really cool dude! My sister thinks he is ‘dreeeeemy’ whatever that means!
    Our Ladeee also told us about all of you nissse peeples writing ledders and calling and sending somethings called ‘faxxxxesss’….I don’t know ‘bout those, but anyway, she said you all are working VERY hard to help save horsesssssss! She told us about how some horsessssss go in a big truck and end up at very BAD places where the peeples are MEAN…We don’t know about that, ‘cause our Mommy and Daddy love us VERY much and when we go in our trailer, it’s because we are going on a adventure into the country.
    Our Mommy and Daddy take us at least one time a week, we are very lucky, ‘cause we only have to be in the trailer for a few minutes…..then we get out and go lonnnnnnnngggg ways, around the big lake and up and down all the hills. We see realllllly neat stuff, too. Sumetimes our parunts allow US to ‘choose the roote’ and THEN it’s REALLY FUNNNNNN! WHEEEEEEEE!!!
    We came here to live a few years ago. Before, we lived somewhere called Missouri, 'cause we are Missouri Foxtrotters:) It was REAL COLD there:/ Then we came to the ranch a few pastures from here. Our Mommy decided she wanted to get us to come live with her and our Daddy. She gave our othur Daddy a pretty cool little red sports car, and then we got to come live here.
    We didn’t know about saddles or bridles or ANYTHING, but our Mommy and Daddy learned all 'bout that ‘stuff’ and then taught us…we had a kinda ‘horsey skool’ togethur, all forrr of us…..It was FUNNNNNNN!
    Our ladeee said after *BARBARO* went to Hevvin, she noticed us in our BIG PASTURE and stopped to ask our Daddy if she could give us some carits and appuls sometimes…..THANKFULLY, our Daddy said, “SURE”…’cause we just LOVE it when our Ladeee stops by to visit.
    Our Ladeee really does love us, ‘specially *ME*, I can tell. She calls me her ’Boyfren’…She ‘specially likes when I play with her hair and I have so much FUN watching her ‘MELT’ when I look her in the eyes. She is a GREAT FREN, ‘cause she ALWAYS ‘skritches’ my butt…ya know, it’s HARD to skritch your own HORSEY BUTT!!! And I just loveeee giving her HORSEY HUGGGGSSSSS, too. She gets SOOOOOOO EXCITED when I do that…shucks…I like it TOOOO.
    Well, everbuddy, I just wanted to write this ledder to you and tell you all Merry Christmas, and thanks so much for workin’ so hard to help all those horseys who need the help!
    Luv, *MISTER* and my Sissster, ROSIE:)
    Posted by: Carol Nichols at December 12, 2007 9:20 PM
    Mark at Nelson's office said calls are about 50 to 50 for and against.
    Ask him, why would someone be for slaughter of horses? He said it's a business for some!
    Kinda went off on him at that point, horses are not bread for food.
    Allard's office said the same thing 50 to 50
    I quit asking at that point, just ask for support for S311, sent some emails.
    Evening all. Well, I got a call from Casey's office today. They are going to try to schedule a meeting for Daryl and I early next week. Let's see what happens. Thanks to everyone who called and emailed Casey's office about getting this meeting for Daryl. This is a yes vote. Daryl just needs to get his foot in the door... and since his feet have been working overtime, let's give him a hand! Call Casey's office - 202-224-6324. Email Alex Davis alex_davis@casey.senate.gov We can get this vote! Let's keep on 'em! Below is my latest letter to his office.
    ### Daryl, can't begin to thank you enough for all that you do.
    As well as everyone here present or silent, thank you! You are all so important to this battle. So roll call! I am here and I'm not going away!!
    - part of my letter to Casey's office:
    "I will not be going away and I will continue to remind you that I am a PA resident that is amazed that my senator can turn a deaf ear to the majority of his constituents.
    I have recently done one of the things I vowed I would not do; I watched some of the various videos that have been taken depicting what type of end these creatures meet. I never felt the need to watch because the mere knowledge that this practice existed in our country was enough to push me to become active in ending this atrocity.
    Now, after seeing these videos, after experiencing the cruelty, I am not only horrified; I am ashamed. Ashamed that we as a country have failed these animals that carried our nation on their backs; that have served us and trusted us. We have not only failed them and betrayed that trust, we have embarrassed ourselves.
    Senator Casey has it within his power to help us end this abomination. All we are asking for is a few minutes of his time."
    WE BELIEVE!!
    Hi All, thanks for the thoughts and well wishes for Coby. I haven't heard anything yet but I think he's okay. I think he just did the proverbially bounce. In any case, he's done for the year now and will return as a three year old in the spring. He deserves a break. I think he did real well for his two year old season.
    My other guys will be picking up the slack. Ambling Rose(my Rosie girl) is making her comeback at the end of the year. We have Razzle Dazzle making his debut at the end of the year or beginning of next and we also have GlidenSeek returning to racing within the next couple of months. I'll have them to occupy my time until my Coby returns.
    ###
    I also received a great report on Walk. He is settling in nicely in his new home and is apparently loving retirement. His new caretaker says that he is turning heads and looks like a million bucks. He's already gotten three offers to breed him and hopefully more will come. I can't wait to see the new baby Walks making their debuts in about three years time. I know that they will be as special as he is.
    Anyway, take care all. I will let you know about Coby when I hear something but I did watch the race and I'm sure he is fine.
    Rachel and Daryl: HOORAY!!! Oh, the Reiki is going out for the best possible outcome to the Senator Casey saga.
    ###
    Re Cavel: it just doesn't "feel" right to me. The question I have is what happens when the Supreme Court decides NOT to hear the case? Does it go back to a lower court and start over again or is that their final option? Is this another tactic to re-open for business or is this their last gasp before this horror is finally over?
    ###
    Re Cavel and the sites of the closed plants - once we are all sure this horror is finally over -I am still planning to go and do a healing ceremony for the land and for the peace of the spirits of those who could not physically be saved - and to forgive all those who contributed to the horror. I will not meet the density of the anger and greed with my own anger because that will not end the cycle of hate. If I go there with anger, it means my heart has not been cleared. With what has happened to me in the last 2 weeks, knowledge that had been buried deep inside me has finally and safely surfaced. I know how I will be when I go for the healing ceremonies. I will be what I know I am when I go to KD's chant sessions.
    Hiya, FsOB. Well, I am thoroughly exhausted from an extra long day at work and now I read that Cavel wants their case to go to the Supreme Court on top of George Bush vetoing an extension of the SCHIP earlier today). Methinks the stars are not properly aligned today.
    I am not a lawyer, but I believe that if the Supreme Court refuses to hear their case, then the place stays closed. But what I don't know is whether if the Supreme Court agrees to hear Cavel's case, then might Cavel file for an injunction to reopen pending a decision to uphold or overturn? (Sorry, but I can't remember if any current posters or readers here are attorneys in the US.) To say that I am furious is an understatement. How much $$$ are these fools from Belgium trying to cost taxpayers in this country? (And I am probably one of the more 'left of political center' bleeding heart liberal members of The Barbaro Nation. This situation is simply outrageous and such a travesty. Perhaps Belgium would like to try to annex the State of Illinois next.)
    OK, I am tired and it's time for me to stop my ranting. Tomorrow is another day, Scarlett! May we all rise to seize the new day with a sense of renewed righteous indignation. RMH
    #### To Shirl & Jennie in KY: I know how hard your team is working down there. I sure hope I can convince some of my relatives and former schoolmates to make some calls. Also, perhaps some of my cousin's teenaged daughters might spread the word at their respective high schools.
    To Harriette: Your reposting of last year's note had me in tests. Yes, those were hopeful days.
    To Renee: I needed a laugh and your "real story" did that for me! Many thanks.
    To Lynne B.: Ditto, loved the note from Mister and Sissster Rosie. They are talented keyboard users!
    To CJ: Yes, Cassandra was from Greek mythology. I believe that the actual Greek spelling of her name is Kassandra. I'll ask someone at church on Sunday.
    To Sophie's Lee: Yes, we are the "love peeples" here!
    To Lorraine: Such a relief to read that Walk is getting so nicely acclimated!
    To Lyn G.: Seriously, if Cavel remains permanently closed, it would be great to learn whether one might be permitted to peacefully and respectfully enter the premises to conduct a purification ceremony or not. My guess is that Cavel would never consent to that, but perhaps a new buyer of the property might. What a tormented space that must be. ####
    Nancy, grotty - as far as weather is concerned - just means unpleasant. It started as a shortened version of "grotesque" back in the sixties and was applied to anything horrible, shabby or not very nice. I think it came out of Liverpool with the Beatles. If you have ever seen "A Hard Day's Night", I seem to remember George Harrison using the term. There was also a tv sitcom called "The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin" where Reggie started up a shop called "Grot" which sold absolute junk (and I mean ridiculously awful, useless stuff) and made a fortune.
    *(loved our letter from Mister,also your update on visiting him again!!) :)
    STRATEGY FOR THURSDAY DECEMBER 13
    On December 5, Senator Larry Craig made a public declaration of his intent to derail any attempt to bring S 311 to the Floor for a vote. This Senator is a disgrace to our country and to the principles that our nation was founded upon. Because of Senator Craig and a few of his colleagues, American horses will continue to be brutally slaughtered.
    Let’s make our voices heard in the Halls of Congress. Make your feelings POLITELY known to Senate Leadership...we must demand that our horses are afforded due process. Please contact the Senator Leadership and request that S 311 is immediately brought to the floor for a vote or to support any legislation that contains language to end horse slaughter for human consumption and the transportation of horses for human consumption.
    Senate Majority Leader:
    Harry Reid ph: 202-2224-3542 fax: 202-224-7327
    Alex, about some of the race tracks here in NM. I've heard stories about horses coming off these tracks, injured, etc., and being sold. In my community, 2 mares and a foal in particular had very, very sad ends to their lives. I just hear stories, and it's disturbing.
