Barbaro Updates: 453

updates are now here.

Update 2829: I chatted with Michael Blowen at Old Friends a couple of days ago (I was actually trying to call someone else and pressed the wrong button on my cell phone while driving) and asked him if he had taken on Williamstown yet (he mentioned to me when I was at Keeneland he was keen to get him) and he had. Here is the story on their new blog: Welcome Williamstown.

Update 2828: Another crisp start to a gorgeous morning this morning at Sam Houston Race Park. I hear it is snowing back in Delaware! We had nine sets today, of which five of mine went to the gate to just stand in and back out. All went nicely, the entire morning appeared to be incident free. During the break (track closes at 8 am and reopens about 8:45 am) I called Mrs. Jackson. We had not spoken in a while so it was good to catch up. I also called Staci Hancock. We discussed anti horse slaughter (I actually wanted to see if we had any contact info for Mrs. Romney who expressed on network TV last night how horses had saved her). Anyway, good conversations.

Update 2827: Curlin is now jogging at the Fair Grounds: Curlin doing lots of jogging, excerpt:

Trainer Steve Asmussen has been leading Curlin in the morning. Jogging on the outer part of the track, against the direction of the workouts, Curlin has been out on the track for three consecutive mornings, with Asmussen leading him to an exercise pony.

"Curlin is jogging a couple of miles on the track," said Asmussen. "He's handling it really well, traveling well. We're proceeding like we have the opportunity to run him, but we're definitely a long ways away. He'll be jogging for a while."

Carl Nazger, adds another award to his tremendous year: Nafzger Named Big Sport of Turfdom.

Keep calling and writing.

MORNING POST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI

STRATEGY FOR WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 5

EVERYONE…. please follow the link below to the Paul Sorvino thread where we are collecting letters from FOBs asking Paul Sorvino to help us get horse slaughter out to the public via national television. Mr. Sorvino will be hand delivering all of our letters and other materials to production companies this week in hopes of getting some airtime on a major network to tell America the truth about horse slaughter.

It is my understanding that the Tuesday meeting was postponed due to weather. So, if you haven’t yet done so, please take a few minutes to write a letter. The official tally as of now is 229 letters received. Many thanks to Lucille who is working so hard on this project.

Hiya, FsOB! I am spreading the word that more letters can be sent to Lucille for Paul Sorvino's presentation on Tuesday of next week. Wishing each of you a most productive day! Peace, RMH

#### To Laurie H.: Thanks for the 'Bart report' from last night. I don't want to think what his blood sugar was after eating all the sugary coating of those cookies. He is quite the character! Hope you feel better today. ####

Missing Barbaro!!!

It's taken me a couple days but I finally have my letter written to Mr Sorvino...here it is

Mr. Sorvino:

Thank you on behalf of the horses for being their voice and for taking a stand against the slaughter of America’s horses for human consumption. Horses are an American icon. They helped settle this great country, pulling wagon trains of pioneers in search of a new life .Horses have carried our soldiers in battle, carried supplies and mail, tilled our fields and enriched our lives. They deserve far better than to end up on a foreign dinner plate.

I grew up in the 50’s watching Roy Rogers and Trigger, Fury, My Friend Flicka, and so many of the great early westerns. Horses are synonymous with the Old West. How many of us wanted a pony or a horse when we were children and how many of us would be appalled to learn maybe our childhood friend had been slaughtered.

Slaughtered, Mr Sorvino, not euthanized in a humane way. Horses heading for slaughter are transported in the worst imaginable conditions. They are jammed into trailers without food or water, without being able to move. Some give birth in the trailers or on the slaughter plant floor. The conditions in the trailer are filthy, excrement everywhere, the smell of fear and death and hopelessness in the air. When I think of these conditions I can’t help to think of Word War Two and the genocide of the Jewish people. They, too, were transported in cattlecars without provisions only to arrive to their destinations to be killed.

Animals are sensitive to their surroundings They smell the fear, the copper scent of blood, they hear they squeals of pain from the inhumane head bolts used in their death,
We call ourselves a civilized nation? I think not. Gandhi said the measure of a nation is how it treats its animals. We fail.

We may not be able to change the world. Some cultures consider horsemeat a delicacy.
I find this revolting, but I cannot change it. We can however stop our horses from this tragic end. Let those countries east their own horses, ours are a sacred part of our history.

Thank you for your help. God Bless your efforts to educate the American public.

Sincerely,
Harriette Gill
Lexington, KY

Update 1137: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (monday night). Mrs. Jackson just called, and she had just visited. Barbaro was laying down when Mrs. Jackson arrived. As much as she tried to be very quiet Barbaro was soon up and ready for his Lael Farm grass.

Lord God, wrap S311 in Divine Love and Divine Order. Open the heart of every member of the Senate to clearly hear the voice of the horse, and feel the Magnificent Spirit of the horse. Compel each member to immediately move S311 to the floor in a right and perfect way, and then vote with their hearts and their conscience for the highest good of all. Thank you God for Your mighty Presence in the passing of S311.

A year ago today on my mind too...seems like yesterday. Hell, it was yesterday.
Prayers for all In the Fight today. Success and access for Daryl to our elected officials--some of whom will NOT be re-elected next time their terms come around due to their inattention to the issue of HS. Ha.

Send out a little prayer for Boxer and me this morning...we will be on our way to the Vet to see if he thinks this patch on his muzzle needs to be excized. There's not much extra skin on a greyhound muzzle...so I don't know how he's going to get enough clean margin without making Box look like he's curling his right lip....

Have him on Caisse's tea already because a few mast cells were found...anyhow. He just has to be OK. Just thinking of this has me in a sweat...we have been on this path so many times...my understanding "family" will say that I have so many dogs, "these things will just happen..."

(I once told my sister that the accepted response was "I am so sorry..." and that if she didn't have that in her heart, to just be quiet.)

GRRRR>

Who is it that said we make our own families? Yes, fambleeeeee.

OK so, keep calling, keep hoping. We are so close, and Daryl needs our support in DC so much. If you haven't written your Sorvino letter., PLEASE DO. It's so easy.

love you all. Be well, ttyl: j

As a moderator I can ASSURE you, you've not been banned. What we can do is clear out the "machbragel" since it has a problem and reopen the "aniece" for you. Will this work for you?

All you had to do was email and ask. Several people have had problems with their log in names in the past. It does not mean they were banned.

That would be fine. I don't care which name you'd like me to use. I only switched names because I began receiving rather nasty emails from people affiliated with a certain "rescue" group and I was hoping to reduce that to some extent.

Bush the Texan scared of horses?
Dec 4, 2007

Alex Spillius filed a story back in September for the Telegraph newspaper (London) that included this interesting tidbit:

President Bush may like to be seen as a swaggering tough guy with a penchant for manly outdoor pursuits, but in a new book one of his closest allies has said he is afraid of horses.

Vicente Fox, the former president of Mexico, derided his political friend as a “windshield cowboy” – a cowboy who prefers to drive – and “the cockiest guy I have ever met in my life”.

He recalled a meeting in Mexico shortly after both men had been elected when Mr Fox offered Mr Bush a ride on a “big palomino” horse.

Mr Fox, who left office in December, recalled Mr Bush “backing away” from the animal.

”A horse lover can always tell when others don’t share our passion,” he said, according to the Washington Post.
Mr Bush has spoken of his fondness for shooting doves and cutting brush on his Crawford ranch in Texas, which he bought in 1999.

The property reportedly has no horses and only five cattle.

To be fair to President Bush, one does not have to be an equestrian to appreciate horses. And if you are not used to being around horses, it is wise to keep your distance. Nonetheless, do horse lovers and advocates need to worry how the President personally feels about horses?

It would be terrific if President Bush were a keen horseman like his idol, President Reagan, but not necessary.

When we recently asked a White House aide if he thought President Bush would veto the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act when it reaches his desk for signature, as has so often been reported, he commented he saw no reason why the President should veto it. “That’s just because there’s language in the Ag Appropriations Bill that the President said he would not sign if certain provisions were left in it.” The Agricultural Appropriations Bill has a provision that cuts funding for USDA inspections at horse slaughter plants. “To my knowledge, that simply was not one of them.”

According to the USDA and FSIS website, there are currently no USDA inspected horse slaughter plants operating in the U.S. for the purpose of export.

LADY AT THE FENCE UPDATE!!! :)

Good Wednesday Morning, ABR Famblee....

I could stand it NO LONGER....I had driven past their home without stopping for the absolute last time....!!! I called horsemommy, she has been quite under the weather for weeks now with some horrid virus...but bless her heart, she said, "YES!!! COME RIGHT NOW, IT'S BEEN TOOOOOO LONG"!!!

I 'ZOOOOOMED' there! Armed with a two pound bag of baby carits and could HARDLY contain myself pulling down the drive INSIDE the fence!!!

Oh YES....*MISTER* was waaaaatttcccchiiinnng...and OH YES...He KNEW it was MEEEEEEE:) So did Rosie...but she suddenly needed to walk further out into the pasture because in her 'excitement' she had to peeeeeee:)

I unhooked those electric fence thingys and slid under the top one which stays 'plugged in' so fasssssst!!! *MISTER* was RIGHT THERE, FAMBLEE...IN MY FACE:) I fed him a few carits...got him into his pen..by the way, Miss Molly, the Black Labradoris from next ranch had seen me pulling in as well, and SHE loves those carits as much as *MISTER* and Rosie!!! So...Mister, Molly and I got into his pen...I got the gate closed and to his complete and utter disappointment, I LEFT his pen....(I had to get Rosie inside hers)....while I was giving her carits, I decided to help horsemommy and also give her some pellets...it was close enough to dinnertime...all the WHILE...I could hear *MISTER* nickering and nickering....wanting to know what in HELL I was doing inside his sister's stall....FEEDING HERRRRRRR??? What about "ME", I could hear him saying!!!! :)

I beat feet right back over to his pennnn...oh! Famblee!!! He has become even more 'MAJESTIC' than he was before!!! He has his beauuuuuuutiful 'winter coat'...it is long and shiny like the newest of pennies...and sooooooo INCREDIBLY soft..I cannot think....maybe Silk...fine silk!! He is growing his horsey 'beard' his blaze is white as snow now...all that danged 'tar weed' is gone 'til next Fall!!! I just 'LUSTED' over him....fed him some carits...fed him some pellets...went with horsemommy to the hay barn and brought him a flake of grass hay...fixed it in his manger...all 'fluffed' up nice:)

Poor *MISTER* he must 'blow' his horsey nostrils and lips...because that grass hay gets up his horsey nose!!!! I think he needs 'horsey benadryl'....:) It got all up in his forelocks and all over his beauuuuuuutiful face...I 'brushed it all away with my hands....he ate and ate...I smooooooooshed and huggggged and kisssssed and touched every INCH of his beauuuuuutiful body!!! Ran my hands down his legs and the fronts of his horsey hooooooves!!!! The curls which form on the backs of their legs...are most gorgeous right now:)

He was looking at me with those deep chocolate brown 'full of p&v' eyes....his eyes were SMILING REALLY BIG!!!! My face was SMILING REALLY BIG!!!
My HEART WAS SINGGGGGING REALLY BIG!!! I kissed his nose, I kissed his cheeks, I kissed his forehead....I skritched the outer edges of his horesey ears....He just LOVES when I do that for him:) I skritched his big beautiful horsey BUTT:)

Then I had to take my carits and go next door to see Miss Rosie....she got some lovings, too...and kisses and conversation:)

I could only stay about a half hour...it felt like 30 SECONDS:( The time FLEW by...I left with a promise to be back as soon as possible...I came home FILTHY and SMILING and SMELLING OF HORSEY:) I just 'hate' to have to wash my hands:(

Soooooo, dear Fambleeee:) There you have it, another few minutes of sheer and utter happiness spent with those two beauties...all because of *BARBARO*.....

ROLL CALL....I'M HERE AND I'M CALLING

DebbieLA...I remember the days of 600 or more posts. So many famblee members who don't post anymore. It seems that when BBH transitioned to Equine Hevvin many lost their purpose. I wish there was a way to bring them back, to remind them of his legacy that we are trying to fulfill.

The article regarding the incentives in Kentucky luring the AQHA breeders make me sick and perhaps explain why those Senators are not on board. Traitors!!!

Barb in Florida.....what do you think about scheduling Uncle Daryl to meet with Martinez armed with a letter requesting a letter of support to Landrieu? Isn't that what an aide said yesterday?

I have a unique position in that both my Senators and my Rep are all co-sponsors. DARYL NEEDS APPOINTMENTS GANG. PLEASE MAKE SOME CALLS AND GET DARYL IN TO SOME OF THESE OFFICES!!!!

Prayers to Boxer and may his exam have good results for him, and wishing comfort to Jonna.

Hi everyone:
There is some confusion and contradicting info on the board about Senator Obama and his position on S. 311. I have worked closely with his top aide who assures me that the senator will vote YES. He will not co-sponsor. The request has been made by the aide for a letter of support to send to Senator Landrieu's office. He said he will inform me as soon as he hears from the senator.
But making calls to this office is still a good idea. Not necessary to engage in conversation, merely say you support S. 311 and would like the senator to co-sponsor (even though we know he won't).
I've spoken with four of my DC contacts and they said the calls have picked up in the last two weeks. Great! Now let's pick it up even more!
Snowing here in DC. Average driving speed: 5 mph. Average speed for this congress to act on S. 311: 2 mph! So, they need to hear from us. We are the gas pedal!

Renee`....Judy...:) I obviously 'lose' myself while there...I lose myself to the point of I'd like to climb inside *MISTER* and stay there FOREVER:) When I was writing this morning, I found myself 'right there' with them again...I had a picture of Molly the Black Labradoris GALLOPING LICKITY-SPLIT all the way across the pastures....with GLEE in her doggy eyes and a smile as big as my own!!! :) I could still 'feel' and 'smell' *MISTER* it was like being there all over again....so as happy as I am to read the two of you enjoyed....can you EVEN imagine my own *GLEE*??? :)

Daryl....I've got my 'PEDAL TO THE METAL' Mannnn!!! My stinkin faxes are sent...must re-try two...their machines are NOT ON??? :/ I'll call them!! :)

Be safe in the 5mph snowy streets...stay warm...we LOVE you, Daryl!!! So does *BARBARO*!!!

THIS SENATOR NEEDS MORE CALLS.

Dear Carol ,

Thank you for contacting me in support of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. I appreciate hearing from you on this important subject.

Like you, I am concerned about the treatment of horses. They are a wonderful symbol of the history and culture of our country. You may be glad to know that I have voted for and helped pass legislation to prohibit federal taxpayer dollars being used for the slaughtering of horses for human consumption.

As you may know, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act places a permanent ban on slaughtering horses. It would prohibit: (1) slaughtering a horse for human consumption; (2) importing to, or exporting from, the United States horsemeat or horses for human consumption; or (3) selling, bartering, transferring, receiving, or distributing horsemeat or horses for human consumption.

When this bill was considered in the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee I voted against it because of concerns raised by groups who care, feed, and work with horses, including the American Medical Veterinary Association and th e Farm Bureau. However, I will keep your concerns in mind as I continue to follow this legislation and continue to work in the U.S. Senate to support the enforcement of humane treatment of horses and other animals.

Once again, thank you for contacting me to share your thoughts on this issue. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future with other issues important to you.

Sincerely,

Senator David Vitter
United States Senator

P.S. Please visit my webiste to sign up for E-Updates and receive regular email updates from me on the issues important to Louisiana families.

Posted by: Carol Nichols at December 5, 2007 5:02 PM

Carol Nichols.....

Vitter needs more than additional phone calls.....his wife knows all about that too I'm sure. I'd almost just assume FOBs didn't bother petitioning this guy; he lacks the character of Barbaro, not to mention he shares Senate duties in the State of Louisiana with Senator Mary Landreau, the sponsor of S311. I'm sure Senator Landreau has had her "say" with Vitter already on this issue, and probably to no avail I would think.

Still waiting for extra HAHS nat'l target list for today. Will have it up here & at the DB ASAP. Meanwhile I was looking around the DB and found something I want to pass on to ALL.

VERY IMPORTANT, all FOBs seeking to get S 311 / HR 503 enacted - PLEASE READ AND TAKE ACTION.

PLEASE ADD THESE CALLS TODAY AND UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE - to get Daryl Smoliak scheduled for meetings with OH Sen Voinovich and some OH Reps.

Sorry if this is repetitive, I haven't read anything here yet today, but IMO this is an important mission for today and until further notice. The Sen and Reps below are from Ohio. I'm sure there are other legislators on Daryl's "list" re whom similar calls would help, but at this moment the only ones I can tell you about are these from Ohio.

Yes, we are home, and yes I am sleeping with hounds and meds because there is a face-eating headache on board...

yes, Frank does think we need to take the mast cell nasty off his face...i told him about recent successes i read about online with pred and these shallow facial mast cell demons...he said, "okay, okay, i just don't want to know about it: 20 mg a day, and don't tell me."

Alex, Penny, Wendy and Tim
Many thanks for all you do.

I'm alittle green with envy that so many of you get to be around horses on a daily basis.

I have BUD, a 100lb black lab who sometimes gallops like a horse, but thats as close as I get.
(Sometimes to Bay Meadows or Golden Gate Fields) and of course my copies of Blood Horse and TVG.

Thank you all for the work you're to help our equine friends and their plight to live and enjoy a healthy, happy life.

Healing wishes to those in need.

To all those who are missing Barbaro today: Bob Costa's NOW on HBO last night paid tribute to a number of athletes who we lost in 2007. He emphasized that the list was not complete ... but right there in the middle of the segment was Barbaro ... winning the Derby and then a nice headshot with his "dates." Very moving, if you can see it on a repeat of the show.

Hi Everyone...
I've sent my letter to Mr. Sorvino, another of our heros. I was as usual inspired by Barbaro as with so many things I do now. I miss him. Hard to believe a year ago there was such hope for him. But he lives on in all of us with what we do.

Hello everyone!!!

I just got off the phone with Mr. Sorvino regarding their first meeting today and he said it was a huge success!!! He said the producers were very receptive and agreed to watch some of the video footage of slaughter and the TV producers were appalled by what they saw. The room was filled with "Oh my God", "This can't be real", "Where is this" they just couldn't believe it!!!

Mr. Sorvino said a HUGE thank you is in order to everyone that wrote letters and he is looking forward to his next meeting this afternoon and the meetings for tomorrow!!! He said the producers couldn't believe all the letters when Mr. Sorvino put them out on the table "KEEP THE LETTERS COMING".

Thank you everyone:)

Extra Weds 12/5 National Target List (HAHS)

PREFACE/Heads-Up per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/ request: Ask the Senators who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Senator Mary Landrieu, sponsor and promoter of the Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to their two latest antislaughter releases are in the DB post linked near the bottom of this Comment.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-459-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE NEW SUGGESTION/CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE Prior HS History above the LIST OF SENATORS below.)

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators. [NOTE - hidden portion of this post, in following post.]

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?

Here is today's (Wednesday 12/5) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 to the Senators and HR 503 to the Representatives; ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the current/new ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind. The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

PRIOR HS HISTORY - Per Daniel of HAHS - voted for the Ensign-Byrd Appropriations Amendment in 2005 but have not yet cosponsored S.311. We have also included the second cluster of Senators from the special contacting list provided by our lobbyists.

Greetings from snowy Chester County, PA. I am doing my daily communicating with DC right now. Had an emergency at the ranch (human, not equine) but was able to spend time with the boys once everything was calmed down. I even spent some time with El-Shakkah and she is such a lady. I adore her as much as the boys. The snow held off until I got home.

Keep going, Mr. Sorvino. What a guy!!!! We truly needed this.

Someday, as I sit in a wheelchair in a nursing home watching TV, I just know there will be a movie on called "Alex and the FOBs". And maybe due to lack of teeth or dementia, I won't be able to verbalize, but what a smile I'll have in my heart. Remembering. And we are still going.

Stay encouraged frens. We can put our 'side' out there. The other 'organizations' can't. We have the upper hand.

I am so happy to read all of the stories. I've come home a stinkin mess many times from fur baby duties. I just love it. Slobber on the shoulder, hair stuck together. Poo in the treads of the boots. I remember a time when I wore heels. I'm so priviledged to be smelly and dirty. And here.

Posted by: Margie at December 5, 2007 7:38 PM

Lucille, that is fantastic news!!! Thank you so much for all the work you've put into this. Anyone who has not taken the time to write to Mr Sorvino, please, please take advantage of this opportunity. The Senate may not be impressed by celebrity endorsement, but it is certainly our conduit to informing more people!

### Renee, Thank you for your post last night. I've always been here...reading... making my calls... just haven't posted much.

### Mary S thank you for your prayer. Thank you for being here.

####Sherry, Gunner is gorgeous... and gosh so smart! Love to you both.

#### I am enjoying the heck out of this snow!!!! Coffee in hand, Christmas music playing in the background, and this beautiful light blanket of snow covering the evergreens in the back yard... what could be better? I'm counting the minutes until I can pick up my little one and go play in what little snow we have!! Until then.... off to make more calls.

WE BELIEVE!!!

I called Joe @ TBfriends to ask if he would write a letter to Mr. Sorvino. He was sympathetic, but explained he really couldn't as he buys from KBs and he has to walk a fine line in order to buy/rescue more horses. Said some don't sell to him anymore. He's really pessamistic about the bills being able to stop horses going over the border and said he's never seen it this bad before with 2 and 3 horses in a pen at the feedlots. He's posted that on his website before. Can't blame him, his charter is to help horses.

We have to get congress to understand how despicable the horse killer industry is and how they really operate in an "underground" or "mob" type manner. And the USDA is party to it!

Posted by: Debbie T, Colorado at December 5, 2007 8:12 PM

####Cathy Potter:
I've shown a couple videos to aides......and it surely does impact them. Do they pass on the impact? That's another question. I provide the link and ask that the senator view the video. Obama's aide has seen videos and he is so totally against slaughter and, as I mentioned, Senator Obama is a Yes vote and I've been told that he has seen videos.
It would be great to get all of them in a room, strapped into chairs and make them watch until they commit to a YES vote.

That you for coordinating this effort and thank you for letting us know the reception Mr. Sorvino has received so far. That seems so encouraging. I'm sure the videos were very difficult to watch. I can't watch them. Knowing what is happening is enough to rip me up. I'm so glad so many of us wrote letters for him.

Again, thank you for how you and Mr. Sorvino have helped the horses....

I understand Joe's position. But, I believe we need to get the legislation passed. Will that stop horses from being shipped across the border?? No. But, at least it will be illegal.

At least it is a starting point. Right now we have no teeth to stop this practice.

One battle at a time. It takes a lot of battles to win a war and I believe in the long term this is a war. Getting the legislation passed is just one battle.

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at December 5, 2007 8:43 PM

Thank you everyone!

One thing we have to remember is if the truth about horse slaughter is exposed on prime time major network television not only will the general public see the brutality to the horse the legislator’s family, friends supporters etc. will see. The viewing public will also see that congress has the power to stop it and has not.

Also the air time will generate more media attention.

Yes there will be some who illegally transport horses across the borders for slaughter but guess what we will be hot on their tails! Remember it will be ILLEGAL and remember the bill says this:

(Please note the words probable cause)

“any horse or other equine that the Secretary has probable cause to believe is being shipped, transported, moved, delivered, received, possessed, purchased, sold, or donated in violation of section 5(8).”

We must all stand united and strong for the horse and we will win their fight to keep them safe from the evil doers.

Also, I sent an email out to Wayne Pecelle’s (President of HSUS) secretary this morning asking HSUS to send out an alert to their 10 million members to contact their legislators regarding the American Horses Slaughter Prevention Act and 1 hour later I received an email back saying “we will send out an email blast tomorrow”  Even if a small fraction of 10 million people act on this alert we will definitely give congress a jolt.

I agree this is an all out war and passing the bills is just the beginning. I do think it will help. There are other things that can be inacted after the transportation is made illegal. Joe is in the trenches and only knows what he sees. He doesn't have access to the info we do because he has dial-up (painfully slow). I also think there maybe other reasons the feedlots he frequents are fuller. The numbers of horses going over the border doesn't seem to be any higher than the number of horses slaughtered last year in the U.S. Alot of people are being irresponsible now as horse owners because they treat them as a commodity. If the bills pass, it will be a big statement that they are worth more than that. It takes time to see attitudes of people change, but I do think it can happen.

Daryl, Ken Salazar needs to be hit hard if you have time to kill. He is pro-slaughter. One, because he represents an area that is big cattle country. Two, he thinks taking that option away from people limits their rights. Three, feels it will limit the value of horses for sale. And four, thinks there will be an increase of neglected/unwanted horses. Pretty much all the pro-slaughter arguments.

Colorado makes a lot of money off of horse owners and 80% of those horse owners are against slaughter. I know you have arguments for all the reasons he is for it. He is a hard sell and you may not get anywhere with him. So, if there's others that you intend to meet with that are able to be swayed easier, spend your time with them. I just thought if you needed someone to talk to, he needs to have the facts spelled out face to face. I've written letters to him and have gotten the weirdest replies. Almost like they haven't taken the time to read my letter to even get the intent. Thanks for all you're doing!

Boxer and me shared big fat sugar cookies on the way home. I asked God (bargaining with god on the thruway....done that many, many times.)
Took a weenie nap, woke up cranky and felt this would be a good time to finish my calls. have to feed the pack, but will complete the roster after and before I go to my sister's house with my dad for dinner...that ought to be bundle of fun....

anyhow: I am so distracted that I dialed many fax numbers--now deaf in left ear--said good morning instead of good afternoon, and in general, ripped through the two main lists post haste.

Guys: we need everyone. I am thinking of Cowboy, of Ho'Pats, all the Premarin babies, Fitch, and most of all the White Mare everytime I call...who will stand for these horses.

Be proud to be an FoB. We are going to make this happen.

see how punchy? I of course asked God to let me have this boy for a long time...and Jessie as far as that goes...God knows I will try to negotiate with him when i get back on the NYS Thruway. Of course, car screaming works too--no dogs in the car for that fit of pique, of course

....each to their own...

As for Joe at TB Friends> He MUST sleep with the enemy to get what horses he can. He advises his young supported to not mess with the KBs. The horses will just disappear if people piss off the KB's. He's been at it for many many years more than just about all of us. He knows what he's doing.

Thoughts and prayers are with you and Boxer. Hugs from me and Rooooooooooooooo's from Cheyenne. Take care of yourself too...don't forget that.

Well, more discussions with my Senator's aide (Senator Patty Murray) -- it seems that they will not be providing a letter in support of S311 -- even though she co-sponsored last session. Boy, did someone get to this Senator!! Daryl, if you like a challenge, knock on her door!

Hi All, just wanted to let you know that all systems seem to be go for Coby's race next Wednesday in the Capote Stakes at Aqueduct Race Track. He cooled out fine and the race a couple of weeks ago really didn't faze him in the least. He might bounce, but we don't think he will. Please start those thoughts and prayers going for my baby boy that he has a safe trip. Coby really appreciates it and he's thrilled that he has an extended family that cares about him.

All my other babies are waiting in the wings and raring to go. Rosie is back and should be racing by the end of the month, Razzle Dazzle will be making his debut and GlidenSeek should be resuming racing shortly.

Take care all and have a great night.

crosspost from the DB, in the General - Horse Related Folder, thread: "What Horses Mean To Us." After reading, you may want to post your thoughts on the topic.

After lj (jock4hire) sent out a bulletin to her email group about Jim winning the Lone Star Park leading jockey title for the 3rd year in a row, see

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=17419.1

she's been getting many emails from people on her list. She wanted to share this one and has obtained the writer's permission to post this and identify her. Here's an excerpt from lj's email to me, followed by the message she wanted us to see. Lj is puter-handicapped, can only send and receive emails, can't open links from this DB or post at ABR, so I'm acting as her emissary. CJinHammondIN

Hi CJ CraziestCatLady,

This one made me just break down and bawl I think it's such a gripping story and one of just a simple day scene that someone who really does "get it" turned into an event worth writing about!! This is so good and it really touched us so deep because we're like this too!! Even though we work with 'em all the time. It's never taken us for granted or vise versa!! You'll love this CJ . . . . Tell me this isn't a special e-mail!!

This is inspirational!!

email from FOB Margie Clayton to lj in response to lj's news that Jim won the title again this year; posted with Margie's express permission:

That is fantastic!!!! CONGRATULATIONS TO JIM AND YOU BOTH!!! What an accomplishment!!

It must be so nice to be around those horses all the time. I wish I could be around some, but of course, there is no way I could jockey. It must be quite an experience. I am so happy for you both………and jealous you get to see those beautiful animals!

I know I never write anything anymore (Barbaro’s passing has been so hard, even still today and I just find it hard to remind myself of it too much, it hit me so hard and still does), but wanted to share this ‘really nothing’ story with you because not everyone gets the beauty of these animals the way we do, so here goes. Everyone’s lives these days are so hectic, we don’t ever seem to see the beauty of life, especially when we just have a dull/stressful meaningless job. But the other day on my way home (I live out in Wylie) from work, there is a small farm right before you turn into my residential area. They are building up out there around all the little farmers (so sad). But anyway, this guy has lots of horses on his property (he has a real nice place). We’ll as I was going by, I saw 2 men in the pasture close to the road with one of the horses. I guess he was gathering him up to take him to the barn/etc. for whatever (now I don’t know horse lingo so I apologize for that), but it was this man and another man getting the horse. He had the halter on the horse and was taking him toward the house/barn. The horse was HUGE. He was so tall and beautiful. He was much taller than the man. He held his head very high and he was prancing along. He seemed so frisky. It was just an awesome sight to see (probably not too many, but to those of us who ‘get it’). I just pulled over and watched. I couldn’t help myself. That animal was just amazing. He was just so tall and so proud, held his head real high and just prancing along with the men. Wish I could own him/her. Sigh. But I have no place for horses as I live in a residential area. And I have no knowledge of how to even care for them, not that I couldn’t learn though. I beg my husband all the time to move out somewhere where we could have some land and get me a horse – at least just one. I just want one as a pet. To just love and groom and take care of, etc. My husband used to break horses and run a boarding place when he was younger. Now he is a ‘techy’ at AT&T. But he has the horse knowledge to help me. Ahhhhhh, maybe some day. But I just wanted to share my beautiful moment with you. It was just a peaceful beautiful moment. I just watched and realized that life does have beauty. It just lifted my spirits, after such a crappy day at a meaningless job.

So you are very lucky, which I am sure you already know, to be able to be around and work with these beautiful animals.

AGAIN, WAY TO GO JIM!!!!!!!!!!!

###Jonnagrey - Understand and agree completely about Joe. I think what he does is great and also know that he has to do whatever it takes. I was just reporting what he said when I talked to him. And, adding that my thoughts (speculation only) are that maybe the feedlot situation isn't really worse, just different than last year (as the numbers haven't seemed to have gone up on HS since the US plants have been closed).

Thank you Alex (and hello Tim) for keeping this site open. I am still here in So.Cal. and check the posts every day. Question for anyone...is there any presidential candidate that has taken a stance on S.311?

It is wonderful to have so many FOB's working to end sinful horse slaughter. With working full- time, two young FOB boys, my husband in Chile for work, and my big yellow labrador retreiver Samaritan, I have little time to spend contacting those who support ending horse slaughter. I apologize, and hope that you will still allow me to post.

Harriette, your messages give me inspiration and cheer. I hope you are feeling better and your animals are all healty. What happened to the FOB who used to post that had her own My Space page in support of Barbaro, FOB, and anti-horse slaughter? I have not seen a post in awhile...I hope all is well.

I am still supporting Uni. Penn's laminitis foundation: I bought too many (according to my husband) Barbaro pillows and tile baskets. My purchases are a constant reminder of the beautiful and majestic horse that started it all. Horse slaughter must end. Race track safety and race horse treatment must be held accountable to stricter regulations.

I will stop ranting, and hope to hear from the great warriors on this sight. I especially would like to know which politicians support the anti-slaughter bill, they will have my vote.

Take care, and may God Bless all FOB.

Laurie,
Hilary Clinton has co-sponsored the AHSPA. Posts say that Barack Obama will vote for it but will not co-sponsor. Joh McCain if I am correct is also in favor. Hope this is correct.

I just got the SWEETEST news!
I've been going to visit a coworker's horses during my lunch hours- just hanging out over the fence, sometimes treats, sometimes not, but just to hang out.
Yesterday, the off track QH mare who had held back for 2 weeks finally came up and introduced herself- she laid her chin on my shoulder..I was thrilled!

Well, today, one of the guys here at work was mowing out there, and my friend mentioned to him that I'd been jumping the ditch to visit- he built me a little bridge!
I don't care who thinks I'm silly, I'm tickled!

###Robyn Hoffman...hi Robyn. Cooper is good. The Lady INSIDE the Fence tells me you have been asking. I haven't been here for a while. I don't do holidays too well these days, many reasons...sometimes I just "check out" for a while. Thank you for keeping up with Cooper. He is fine, sleeps a lot. Has lost a little nerve jumping into the back seat of my truck. He has missed a couple times. Poor bugger. He now has a queen size fleece blanket on the couch...

Bye for now...Kathy

Strategy for Thursday December 6

Update from Lucille……Paul Sorvino had his first meeting today and said it was a huge success. The producers were very receptive and impressed with all the letters. Mr. Sorvino sends a huge thank you to everyone that wrote and said “KEEP THE LETTERS COMING”!! If you have not written yet, please take a moment to do so. Many thanks to those who have already submitted letters and a SPECIAL THANKS TO LUCILLE who is doing a tremendous job coordinating this effort.

Please follow the link below to the Paul Sorvino thread where we are collecting letters from FOBs asking Paul Sorvino to help us get horse slaughter out to the public via national television.

Hiya, FsOB! Great news from Lucille re. the letters that are still coming in for Paul Sorvino in advance of his presentation next Tuesday. I am spreading the news about Mr. Sorvino's efforts to some of my animal-loving friends who don't come to ABR. Maybe I can convince them to send a letter, too.
I saw Laurie's question about which of the Senators who are seeking their party's Presidential nomination signed on so far as co-sponsors of S 311. Among the Dems, there are Senators Chris Dodd, Joe Biden, and Hillary Clinton. Among the Rep. candidates, there is Senator McCain. Lords knows that there are sooo many candidates, I may've overlooked someone!
Wishing each of you refreshing slumbers at a time that can be extra harried and stressful for many women. Peace, RMH

#### To all of our old pals who posted today, it's great seeing all of you here!
To Laurie: Awesome seeing you here, each one of us makes a unique contribution to safeguarding horses, no matter which type effort we advance. Anything you can do to encourage more women to vote in the Pres. primaries is a great thing, Laurie.
To Harriette: What inspiring words you've written in your letter to Mr. Sorvino!
To Andy in Dallas, thanks for sharing Bob Costa's comments. It's always heartwarming to see that Barbaro has not been forgotten.
To Anna in TX: How charming that this bridge was built for you.
To Jonnagrey: I am very sorry that Boxer needs an excision. Please give Boxer an extra pet from all of us here.
To Lynne B: Love those "Ladeeatthefens" installments!
To Lorraine: Wishing Coby every success next Weds. at Aqueduct.
To Kathy in SC: Please know that you've been missed. I am relieved that Cooper continues to adapt so beautifully. ####

Thanks for the HBO tip.

Got all my faxes done & still have time left to start on tomorrow's faxes. I sure hope the aides count faxes as well as calls because I think I've sent about umpteen million or so. Or maybe it just feels that way.

Thank you Lucille for the mountain of work you've done in getting the letters to Mr. Sorvino. If I ever feel tired, I'll just think of all you've done and know that I've just scraped the surface of my energy & can finish whatever I need to. What an inspiration you are.

Sent a Christmas card with a little money in it to Second Chance today. They said they want to hang them in the stalls. I think about this time last year Barbaro was being flooded with cards and flowers and treats. It is Really going to be hard January 29th, I thought it would get better but it hasnt.
##If you missed the post wanting Christmas cards for the stalls the address is Second Chance Ranch Equine Rescue P.O. box 452 East Longmeadow, MA 01028 They asked if we could put a dollar in the card.

Second Chance also wants us to put in the card thqt it is from an FOB

Robyn, I feel very honored to have literally 'bridged the gap' in that part of my life.

Yesterday I finally met an ex QH racer who apparently doesn't like 'just anyone', according to her mom.
She had been coming near the fence with all the others, but not up TO it.
She introduced herself to me and I put my cheek against hers...she immediately rested her chin on my shoulder. When I had to leave, everyone walked me down the fenceline back to my truck.
Awesome experience, truly.

You are not just anyone. This special lady knows another special lady when she sees one!
So special your visit was. Thanks for sharing.

Love & Happy Holidays to all FoBs,

We are doing GREAT work as a mobile unit -- fueled by our beloved Barbaro, but I have not heard very much about Michael Matz?? He is the one that brought our dear Barbaro to heights that were heavenly even before fate stepped in & raised the bar higher. How is Michael? I want him to know how much I appreciate his attentive, loving care of the great champ even thou Bobby is in heaven. Michael if you are out there.... much love to ypu & Didi, Barbaro really loved the great care & concern you always took in handling his training & races. You are a great trainer & always a hero in my "book". I know its a tough act to follow but Bobby wants you to keep fighting the "good" fight with young, fresh, talented babies. You are a good horse "Daddy".... maybe Nicanor, maybe another (no pressure). Your calm & grace are needed in this sport!

Happy Holidays Michael & Family,
