Barbaro Updates: 452

updates are now here.

Update 2826: As Teuflesberg continues his recovery, here are the details of his next career: Teuflesberg to Stand for $10,000, excerpt:

He is undergoing stall rest at Victory Haven Training Center under the care of his trainer, Jamie Sanders, and her fiance, Donnie Kelly. The two own Teuflesberg with Gary Logsdon and Jeff Singer.

"He should be ready for hand walking in about a week or two," Sanders said about the colt who cost $9,000 as a yearling. "He's really doing well. Looking at him, it's hard to believe he went through this ordeal. He should be ready for test breeding in January."

Update 2825: Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program, the only on track horse rescue, receives an award: Thoroughbred Adoption Program to Receive AAEP Equine Welfare Award.

A tuesday update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:

What a cold and windy Tuesday. Just a couple of sets braved the elements and went to the Tapeta track which was in perfect shape even after the little rain and the cold we have had lately. Most of the horses were restricted to the shed row in this weather. There is nothing of great interest to report this morning. The horses are all quite stirred up with the wind outside.

Tim had a little excitement when he went to the Vets office and Mike Rea was visiting. They had a good chat.

Yesterday Tim spent another cold day at Timonium trying to bid on a few babies. He got out bid and came home empty handed. All was not lost as he was able to see a few clients and beat the bushes so to speak.

Two of Wands is scheduled to run at Laurel Park on Saturday. This will be here first start and hopefully it will be very exciting. Sunday will be the Stallion show at Northview Stallion Station. I love to go see the big boys and have a look at the new stallions they have. Of course I will miss Waquoit who we lost this year. What an amazing old boy he was. Of course Two Punch is very fresh when the crowd is near and seems to love the attention. Not For Love is always a gorgeous one to look at and Domestic Dispute is turning out to be quite popular. He stamps his babies and they always have lots of chrome. Anyway, the horses are all fine. No sickness in the barn and everyone is eating up as expected.

Update 2824: Superfecta here, with your Tuesday afternoon news update.

Sunday is the big day for Miss Andretti as she prepares for the Hong Kong Sprint International, and she is the focus of much newsprint around the world as a result. Her most serious competition is local star Sacred Kingdom and word is that the track will be good.

There is an interesting aside that among the many drugs not allowed in Hong Kong racing is Regumate, a drug that's used to control when mares come into heat. When they say drug free in Hong Kong, they mean drug free there.

There is an equally-interesting article on her owner, Sean Buckley (who co-owns her with Gabriela Guenzi). He's turned down as much as $10 million for Miss Andretti - not bad for what was reputed to be a $450,000 investment on what looked like a good, but not great racehorse - upon switching to the barn of trainer Lee Freedman, she's become a monster. Apparently Coolmore has suggested a freebie with Storm Cat (on southern hemisphere time, of course) and a start in the Breeders' Cup, but if all goes to plan, the six-year-old mare will be running for at least another year, making stops all over the world (and she could end up booked to Redoute's Choice anyway, which would be my preference between the two).

Dylan Thomas is also prepping for a race in Hong Kong on Sunday - the Hong Kong Vase. It's something of a replacement for the Japan Cup which kept him out of the field due to some borderline blood test results (health-related, not drug-related). Also on the card is the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile, which features Breeders' Cup second-place finisher Excellent Art and three-year-old filly Darjina, who is the likely favorite.

Who says it's slow this time of year?

Update 2823: A little chilly first thing this morning at Sam Houston Race Park, but it soon warrmed up to the sixties and bright sunshine. We had nine sets and more riders and more horses. I think we must be near to full now. All our horses went nicely, certainly the ones that I rode. That was not the same for everyone. One rider came off and had to be taken to the hospital. I tihnk he is OK, but since he had to leave in the ambulance the track was closed for about forty minutes. Basically we only had two sets out when this happened so it put us a little behind. After the official break, which was pushed back a half hour, the siren went off indicating another lose horse. This time no one fell off, he had gotten away from his pony and was training off the pony without a rider. Oh well, given everyone had a day off yesterday these things will happen.

Just got a phone call from Tim, who handed me off to Mike Rea who was visiting Fair Hill. He sounded great. Making progress, although as he said, not as fast as he would like. He is now doing physical therapy at the University of Delaware and seems to be enjoying it. Anyway, it was good chatting.

Update 2822: Sheikh Mohammed's team are now busy at the Tattersalls Sales in Newmarket, as they continue to develop their breeding program: Ferguson prominent on Monday at Tattersalls.

This might be worth a road trip for friday: Gomez will ride Z Humor in $1M Jackpot.

Keep calling and writing.

Hiya, FsOB! Brrr, is it ever cold here on the banks of CT's Thames this AM. This week I promise to send our chief "Naughty Nutmegger" Nancy some recipes for the MHR cookbook. My pleasure to do so on behalf of the horses. Wishing everyone a productive day. Does anyone have a most recent tally of the letters for Paul Sorvino? Peace, RMH

#### To Harriette: Kudos to you on finishing the mystery novel. Yours was a true labour of love! ####

#### To Nancy, I echo your sentiments wishing everyone a glowing first night of Chanukah tonight. ####

Mary S,

Thank you for posting the newspaper article by Steve Long about the 2 abandoned horses, one blind and one skettish and lame, found in Ellis County, Texas. It is so heartwarming to see so many rescues interested in saving them from slaughter. I particularly like the last sentence that it validates that there are no unwanted horses.

FOB - please read the article. It is the last post from last night. What a way to start the morning.

Run with the wind Barbaro.

Lord God, wrap S311 in Divine Love and Divine Order. Open the heart of every member of the Senate to clearly hear the voice of the horse, and feel the Magnificent Spirit of the horse. Compel each member to immediately move S311 to the floor in a right and perfect way, and then vote with their hearts and their conscience for the highest good of all. Thank you God for Your mighty Presence in the passing of S311.

## That is a good sign. The prayer is post #8!

Here is a repost from last night. Please say a prayer for these two horses. The auction begins at 1 or 130 today.

Repost:

Wonderful story from the DB. Reminds me of a poem someone posted here about a blind horse and her companion horse in a field - the sighted horse wore a bell. I can't find it - but this story reminded me of that beautiful tale.

Please say a prayer for Habitat for Horses - that they are able to get these two from the auction tomorrow. They deserve a happy ending. They ALL deserve a happy ending.

Also - this story just in about the two horses above.

Carrie Gobernatz, National News Editor

No Unwanted Horses
By Steven Long

Horse lovers around the nation were spurred to action with the discovery of the plight of two Ellis Country horses last week in the custody of the local sheriff's department. The animals were abandoned by their owner and impounded, scheduled to go to sale at auction Tuesday. Slaughter would be the likely outcome.
Texas Horse Talk, among others, issued a news alert regarding the animals described as one blind, and the other "skittish toward people."
In emails, Deputy Carol Darling wrote from Waxahachie, "The Appaloosa gelding is the smaller of the two and the most gentle. I have not been IN the pen with him but he will come up to the fence and eat from your hand, and let you rub his nose, if you don't make to much noise & frighten them. He is blind in both eyes. One eye appears it might be diseased, one appears to be missing."
Not a good prospect for adoption, right? In fact, our first though was that these horses were possibly candidates for humane euthanasia.
"The mare is taller, appears she might be a Thoroughbred / Quarter Horse mix by her confirmation & bay coloring," Darling wrote. "She appears afraid of humans. She will come to the fence if you offer your hand, but she cannot bring herself to make contact or take anything. She may also be lame in one back hip as she often limps if she moves fast."
The rest of Darling's note was heartrending.
"The two have been a pair for a long time and the blind horse depends on the bay mare to help him around. If she walks off he will put his head against her shoulder or withers and walk next to her for guidance."
When Texas Horse Talk National News Editor Carrie Gobernatz sent a follow-up note to the deputy today she received the following reply saying, "I have just received your email from Capt Danny Williams. THANKS so much for the interest in the horses. What, to me, looked like a bleak situation just last week is much brighter now!
A Melissa Thompson called in behalf of Habitat for Horses early this morning & got directions to our facility for tomorrow's sale.
While I still have to offer the horses in public auction by law, I now have at least two rescue groups who are determined to see that these two go to a good home, and it looks like, TOGETHER. I now have a file with 4 different rescue groups (and I noticed 5 emails from people affiliated with Habitat) and will keep this information on file here at the Sheriffs Office should this issue arise again in the future. Thanks so much for getting the word around, and helping these horses."
Even when they are skittish, blind, and lame, the case of these animals goes a long way to validate there are no unwanted horses.

Good Morning Barbaro

Love you and miss you so much...Have fun in heaven with all you friends and keep your sweet spirit near us.

Good Morning Family/Fans of Barbaro

PLEASE CALL, FAX, EMAIL, LETTERS, ETC.

Help our rescues....please.

Just up the road from my home is a field, with two horses in it. From a distance, each looks like every other horse. But if you stop your car, or are walking by, you will notice something quite amazing.

Looking into the eyes of one horse will disclose that he is blind. His owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made a good home for him. This alone is amazing.

If nearby and listening, you will hear the sound of a bell. Looking around for the source of the sound, you will see that it comes from the smaler horse in the field. Attached to her halter is a small bell. It lets her blind friend know where she is, so he can follow her.

As you stand and watch these two friends, you will see how she is always checking on him, and that he will listen for her bell and then slowly walk to where she is, trusting that she will not lead him astray. When she returns to the shelter of the barn each evening, she stops occasionally and looks back, making sure her friend isn't too far behind to hear the bell.

Like the owners of these two horses, God does not throw us away just because we are not perfect or because we have problems or challenges. He watches over us and even brings others into our lives to help us when we are in need.

Sometimes we are the blind horse bing guided by the little ringing bell of those who God places in our lives. Other times we are the guide horse, helping others see.

Good friends are like this...You do not always see them, but you know they are always there. PLEASE LISTEN FOR MY BELL AND I WILL LISTEN FOR YOURS.

God Bless!

JOAN!
Thank you for posting the story of the horse with the bell and the blind partner..

So we have at least a foot of snow on the ground from last night's activity. I slogged through it in my Sorels to pull a bag of dog food from the van (this is where dog food comes from, in case you wondered...)

So, there I am in my fuzzy red fleece bathrobe and my Sorels and doesn't the snow come over the tops of my boots?!

EWWWWW!!! One of the ickiest feelings in the world, ok?? And not even a whole cup o' joe in my system yet? UCH>

Will start calling next, and will just keep it up. We will succeed. Prayers for Daryl who is amazingly again in DC and dogging the bloody politicians as they try to weasel out of taking a stand yet again today...

If I hear "He's mulling (GRRRR>) the issues." I will scream into the telephone. Wait. Here's a thought...we get airhorns, and when the Leetle Aide gives us attitude or a surly answer, we give them the airhorn blast in their tiny, shell-like ears...

OK, OK...those three aides where there last night at 7 pm...Harkin, Kyl and Not-The-Florida-Nelson.
I was so impressed...

OK so, off we go. I will have to blast the van out of the driveway at some point today to get more gasoline in the tank and but another snow shovel. Yes, I broke last year's model....

Courage: jonna

Posted by: jonnagrey at December 4, 2007 2:06 PM

I forgot: bless Paul Sorvino's efforts today. Please open the minds of the media and the television industry to the plight of our horses...and may Sorvino's courage move his friends to join him in this stand against the evil of horse slaughter...

We will not be stopped.

###Thank you Joan. That is the story I was looking for - beautiful reminder of what love we all share. Prayers for the two friends in Texas - waiting for their safe field to roam.

Today's post, #8, with a pink halo. It is very moving.

We can win this everyone. Those other 2 'associations' that are pro slaughter CANNOT plead their case in the general population of millions. It is too ugly. But we CAN and will. We just need to get the word out on a National front. And Mr. Sorvino will help us.

We have the upper hand here. I just know it.

I realize the number of people here may be down. I had the thought though - what if those of us still here, contacted the friends we made on this board - those that may have left for whatever reason? I know there are email lists we still have..... We can email our friends and family too, if you haven't already. Tell them about the letters to Mr. Sorvino, tell them about the push - the hard push we need right now. Tell them about the work Daryl is doing - about Lucille and the letters. Ask them to call, fax, send letters, and pray. For the next few weeks we need all hands on deck - let's get this done.

The common thread that has always united the true members of this board revolves around love -this much I do believe.

"Even when they are skittish, blind, and lame, the case of these animals goes a long way to validate there are no unwanted horses."
Multiple rescues stepped up and offered sanctuary.

For those who are feeling the frustration, I am too but how could I ever look Cloud in the eyes if I didn't keep trying.

Just got done calling everyone i have to call & then some extras: LA, NY, AL, National...and CJ: we're ready!!!!

I want to impress upon these people, i want to sneak the thought into their minds that horses are dying even as we sit comfortably in our homes, places of work. Horses are suffering and dying in pain and confusion and terror, and they're being brought to these ends in vehicles with no shelter; no AC, no heat...

I so want to make these people THINK of these facts--if just for a couple of minutes...and maybe
they will take their issues list to their bosses with a little more passion than yesterday for ending HS.

I have to go lay down with GHs now to calm my brain. FoBs we need you all...ALL. Please have the courage to call, please make the time to call--remember, I was calling at 7pm EST last night, and still spoke to Live Peeples!

God bless the rescuers today, God bless all of us in our efforts. Go Daryl, God Bless you Alex....and all else. Calls are UP in most of the offices I called. I am slightly encouraged, because, we have to do this.

Like I said before--I don't want a tombstone, but if I did, I really don't want it to say, SHE FOUGHT HORSE SLAUGHTER ALL HER LIFE. I want this to be OVER> NOW.

I understand the frustration. I got so frustrated last night that I dug up money for helping to ransom the beautiful little Brabant colt in Belgium...money that I do not actually have after a new computer tower, and all my STUFF transferred over to it---well, whatever the toasted Mother Board didn't EAT--and after most of my brake lines had to be replaced, transmission gaskets, and a brand new oil pan under my engine....(Gee, don't I wish I could say to people, "Isn't my new OIL PAN beautiful?")

So anyway. On we go. I love you guys. I have to go read TB Friends now....and hope it isn't too sad.
Gob bless till later: j

Hi Mary S.....

True, the volume has been noticeably down here on this Website. I think the level of interest hinges upon whether you see people in person as opposed to conversing with them on-line via e-mail. I think if there was better local organization in State groups (e.g. the Maryland FOBs did their own bowling fundraiser recently) it would be indicative of greater volume here on this Forum too.

Believe in Barbaro!

As to making other FOBs aware of the Sorvino letter, I have a copy of the attendees from the Barbaro Celebration weekend back in April. When I have the opportunity (I'm at work right now), I will send a bulk e-mail to these FOBs with the link from the DB regarding the Sorvino letter.

## Dear FsOB Famblee ....... "Gunner" here ..... reporting in for roll call !!!!
Uncle Daryl has asked me (yup - not my MOM, Sherry, but ME) to post the following. He's headed for Washington DC and expects to stay ahead of the storms and be there late this afternoon. I am sooo proud of Uncle Daryl, because he is working sooooo hard for my many brothers and sisters ....... and trying to provide forever safety for them ...... just like I have ! WHEW .... 2 days of Arizona sunshine ... and I'm "happy as a clam !!!"
Anyway - getting the hang of this posting stuff ... hooves ready .... here comes .....
straight Uncle Daryl ....... ! (Mom will be posting stories and pix on what she calls the DB later today) .... and Mom told me to say:
yippy skippy ......... and let's stay as focused and energized as Uncle Daryl !!!!

Love - "Gunner"

####To Elizabeth Thompson & anyone frustrated!
The fight to end horse slaughter has gone on for many years, long before most of us joined the campaign. But more has been accomplished in the last twelve months than the previous five years combined. Inventory: the three slaughterhouses are shut down, public awareness is at an all-time high, and growing, new initiatives to care for horses have begun on many fronts, brave and noble veterinarians breaking away from AVMA, horses being rescued daily, donations from private citizens and corporations to horse rescues and sanctuaries and, for the first time, the horse slaughter issue is truly on the senate radar screen.
Now, this is my own personal opinion, but the foundation for these gains: Barbaro! And his fans. For years, animal activist/advocate groups have fought to end horse slaughter, bless them. But that's their job, it's what they are hired to do. But the grassroots movement has a completely different impact on the lawmakers. And on the entire landscape of the horse world. We have made the difference, we are the catalyst for the incredible gains. We have shown that the citizens of this country still have the power. The FsOB have been an incredible group and we can take credit, operating in the spirit of Barbaro, for the advances made in this difficult political environment.
Understand we are fighting a poisoned atmosphere. The pro-slaughter people have spewed their lies for years without rebuttal. But it's turning around, it really is. The senators I have met with feel there is enough momentum for the bill to pass. So we have to keep calling, faxing and e-mailing. The pro-slaughter side is silent, but our call volume is down. We have to pick it up.
Being discouraged does no good. Use the frustrations to fuel your fire, to work even harder.
All of us here have remained loyal to Barbaro and to each other. We have worked as a team and teamwork is a powerful tool. By staying united, using the fighting spirit displayed by us over the last year and a half, we can get this done. We can finish the tasks Barbaro laid before us.
Okay, made my early e-mails, back in the car and finish the trip to DC.......ahead of another snowstorm! Yuk!

Daryl

WONDERFUL STUFF FROM JOE....I NOW HAVE A LITTLE JOE/CATHY ALTER IN MY HOUSE AND I DELIVER FRESH COFFEE AND PASTRY EVERYDAY... I AM HOPELESSLY IN LOVE WITH THEM AND THEIR (AS Y'ALL SAY IN THE HORSE WORLD) "CONNECTIONS."
THE FARRIER, THE DRIVERS, THE VET, THE DUDE IN PARIS, ETC ETC.
*****************************************************
Tuesday, December 4th...
It rained during the night, but who knew? Slept right through it. Woke up to puddles in our yard. The hot coffee is from Peets, and unbelievable oatmeal crust apple pie was made by Stephanie Diaz. Later today we might be 60 degrees. Dave Clark Five are singing on the oldies station. Already a phone call from horse killer Manny Phelps, and he has a fresh off the track thoroughbred. A 2 year old gelding with a bowed tendon. $500.00, which includes delivery, because horse killer Manny Phelps is picking up doomed horses in Redding. Woodland is on the way to Redding, and horse killer Manny Phelps is trying to be thoughtful. If Gary Duncan drives to the Elk Grove feed lots and brings us a horse, we usually pay him $50.00. Depending on the price of gas. Horse killer Manny Phelps just saved us $50.00. And how weird is that?

Today will be the 28th day in a row we have placed horses in new homes. A big Thank You to a family in Davis, who later today will welcome a palomino stud into their back yard. The palomino is 5 years old, and soon he will become a gelding. The ultimate makeover. A big Thank You to Jennifer Wright for providing the transportation.

Also today a thoroughbred filly leaves her fancy barn in Woodland, and goes to a just as fancy barn in Sacramento. The filly is beautiful, but has mild rotation in her right foot. She was 2 hours away from being put to sleep. A big Thank You to Angela Whitehead for providing the transportation.

And this morning a little morgan filly with a club foot goes to her new home in Santa Rosa. The foot is very pronounced, but workable. The filly will live with a lady who has adopted horses from us in the past, and on her ranch are 2 dairy cows, Milly and Molly. The lady rescued Milly and Molly several years ago, and they are the first to greet visitors. A big Thank You to Gary Duncan for providing the transportation.

All the time come letters and phone calls wondering about certain people I often write about. Brian Gill is the most popular. Many readers want to know why I have not mentioned Brian Gill lately? Brian is in Paris at pastry school, and we usually talk once a week. He met a girl, he misses his mare, he feeds a stray cat every morning outside his apartment and oh, he met a girl. Her name is Maddie, and she too is a chef.

You ask about Jessica Graham and Jessica Spriggs and Jessica Talbot. Sarah McDowell. Allison Martino. Jodi Tuft. Mike Baker. A reader wanted to know if the Fed Ex driver still takes naps in front of our ranch? Yes. Readers have been asking about Jenny Hartman, and is she healed from her injuries? Almost. Jenny is waiting for clearance from her doctor so she can ride horses again. Lots of readers ask about Dave Barrett. For more than 6 years Dave Barrett was our number one horse hauler, but he became very ill and is no longer able to drive. There are several teenage girls who ask if I will introduce them to our shoer Tim Gee. Oh brother. Readers want to know about our vet Lisa Wallace. The best vet on earth, and she works 25 hours a day. When I phone for help Lisa always comes. A reader asked about our Webmaster Max Wilcox, who is away at vet school. Max graduates in a year and a half.

I now realize that many of our good friends have also become your good friends.

Thank you for helping needy horses yesterday. The journey continues. My cell is 530-383-2120. Enjoy your soggy Tuesday, and be sure to hug your horses. The Kings play Utah tonight, and Holly Meeks has tickets. Holly is taking 2 young girls from a group home to their first ever basketball game. On Sunday night in Paris for dinner, Brian Gill ate roasted scallops in a white cream sauce. King crab legs with real melted butter. Slices of tomato covered with dill salmon. For dessert a hunk of strawberry cheesecake. By the end of our conversation I wanted to eat my phone.

Joe

An Oldie But Goodie. Del Mar Cool is below on the left. He came to us from the race track in 2003 with a badly broken pastern. Del Mar Cool has 2 wives, Barbie Doll and Olympic Spirit.

A new arrival from the race track is below on the right, and his name is Smoking Gears. Just 2 years old, and he comes to us with a broken knee.

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at December 4, 2007 4:29 PM

Hi Jonna,
Knowing what he GH's have been through makes me fight even harder, if you weigh all the facts there is no difference even track stories (truth). Cheyenne comes with me every now and then to the rescue...she is funny you can almost see her saying I will figure these beauties out some day and they look like me a little and run as fast as I do and look beautiful doing it...maybe we can race together side by side and be friends.

Go lay down give the Greys a big hug from me.

PLEASE SEND RECIPES!

The friends of Miracle Horse Rescue are producing a cookbook, with 60% of the proceeds from the sale of this cookbook will used for the care of the horses at MRH and 40% of the proceeds donated to the Laminitis Fund at New Bolton in honor of Barbaro...and what his legacy, through our efforts, has meant to so many rescued horses who might otherwise have ended up on foreign dinnerplates!

Please check out the thread and bombard me with recipes - thank you!

I have a big, white, one brindle ear and two brindle saddle bags on his ribs dolt here...I have NO IDEA where this guy will go. He's three and came from a Kansas breeding farm going under...we've got his attitude issues under control (heyiamabig stoopid studdog.)

BUT: I have a possible home with an Irish Wolfhound bitch and owners who have had many greys over the years, kids all grown-up, not he just wants to have horses (rescues!!!) and his hounds and be a gentleman farmer and spouse. Love it.

So on we go...

#####Mary S...I like your plan. Contact all the folks that have been involved here since the beginning and also all of our friends and family about this. The next couple of weeks are so important.

What if we took a day/week..like we do with the Media Blitz...and sent emails to everyone in our addresss books? The Sorvino article would be a great one to send and ask everyone to contact their legislators? And include those numbers/info for the contacts in their state just to make it easier? Just a thought...

REPOST

Strategy for Tuesday December 4

EVERYONE…. please follow the link below to the Paul Sorvino thread where we are collecting letters from FOBs asking Paul Sorvino to help us get horse slaughter out to the public via national television. Mr. Sorvino will be hand delivering all of our letters and other materials to production companies this week in hopes of getting some airtime on a major network to tell America the truth about horse slaughter.

Although Monday was the deadline for his meeting on Tuesday, there will be other meetings coming up. So, if you haven’t yet done so, please take a few minutes to write a letter. As of now, there have been 177 letters received!!

REQUEST FROM LUCILLE....It would be very helpful if letters could be sent in PDF format or Microsoft word. If you have Vista, she cannot open your attachments so please send the letter as an email

Thanks to everyone who has written letters and a HUGE thanks to Lucille who has undertaken this project!!! With all the hard work she is putting into this, one letter from each of us is very little to ask!!

Extra Tuesday 12/4 National Target List (HAHS)

PREFACE/Heads-Up per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/ request: Ask the Senators who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Senator Mary Landrieu, sponsor and promoter of the Bill.
Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to the VEW's two latest antislaughter releases are contained at DB message 17495.1 (the DB thread referenced near the very end of this post).

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-459-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE NEW SUGGESTION/CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE Prior HS History above the LIST OF REPRESENTATIVES below.)

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?

Here is today's (Tuesday 12/4) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 to the Senators and HR 503 to the Representatives; ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the current/new ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind.

The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

Adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

PRIOR HS HISTORY - ALL the Reps. on this list cosponsored HR 503 last time; and ALL these Reps voted YES on HR 503 last session. All voted YES on HR 249 earlier this session, EXCEPT Rep. Shuster (PA) who voted NO and Rep. Clyburn of SC who DID NOT VOTE(both, noted below).

In addition to using the ABR Strategy spiel posted above - (IMO) -

THANK them all for voting YES on HR 503 last session, and remind them that the Bill passed in the House but was never enacted because the Senate counterpart Bill (S 1915) died in a Senate Committee last year - and so the Slaughter/Export Ban needs to be enacted THIS session.

THANK those who voted YES on HR 249 earlier this session; remind them that this protects ONLY wild equines, and we still need HR 503 for the rest of them and to end export.

THANK them all for having cosponsored HR 503 last year - chide them (respectfully), why not now? Remind them that with the export situation as it now is (with the closure of ALL HS plants within the US) the need to cosponsor is even GREATER now than it was last year.

(Note from CJ - the list is short because 2 Reps on today's HAHS are already cosponsors of HR 503 this session so I have not included them here - Rep. Gene Green of TX, 10/30/07, and Rep. J. Gresham Barrett of SC, 6/26/07.)

Hi Renee - HFH is at the Sheriff's auction near Ellis, Texas hoping to get these two horses. Started at 130 I think. See the story I posted up at the top. One blind appy and a bay were found in pretty bad shape - they are a "pair", and are being auctioned.

Hay, vocal and silent FOBs it is imperative you send an e-mail to Mr. Sorvino. I sent an e-mail yesterday and it took like 5-10 minutes. This good man is doing his best for our beloved needy horses and lets show him how strong the FOB nation is. ###anna in Texas, I am sick of kay bailey hitchinson and our other senator. all I get is "willtake it into consideration" in a form letter. well, next time they run for office I will take it into consideration and send them a form letter a few years after the election.

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!
Love you soooo much!!
And always love to The Heavenly Herd, too, you know you take me to where angels walk!
Many votives burning for all of you!!!

Special love and a kiss on his fine nose goes out to GUNNER in AZ!!! God Bless you honey and your new "mum", SHERRY!!

Holding hands, paws, hooves. . . . with all and sending love, hugs, prayers out to all the BARBARO NATION here.

I have to dash off to class for now, back out in the literally gusting 50 mph PA winds!! Out feeding my late Dad's squirrels this a.m. and the wind was so fierce even the squirrels were staying up in their tree boxes/shelters!!
Although I'll just bet this is what it feels like if one were "on board" you beloved Bobbey Jackson, or Big Red, or Lost In The Fog, Affirmed, Mending Fences, John Henry . . . one of "The Herd".
Imagine what it feels like to be Felix or Miss Maizie Lee riding up there on our sweet Bobbey J!! One big whoosh flying through the Heavens!
Please keep an eye out for my "Louie" up there fellas!! He'll have apples, promise!!

Love to all,
please be careful in the weather, too!! Roads and porch steps!!

As you have already heard from Jerry, the horses are safely loaded and on their way HOME!!!

I just got back from the sale myself a few minutes ago. I must say, our Ellis Co. officials were quite impressed with the outpouring of support they have received in behalf of these two horses over the past few days; even commenting that they received calls from as far away as NJ!

Several folks were there to make sure that these two stayed TOGETHER, AND went to a good home. One gentleman that came is a photographer for the Waco Tribune whose wife insisted he go and make sure they were safe. He took pics while he was there. Maybe the Trib will do a story??? JoAnn Livingston of The Waxahachie Daily Light was there as well with a photographer & will be doing a followup story that will go to press tomorrow. One couple showed up with their horse trailer hoping to get the horses, because they were afraid of what might happen to them if no one showed. It was with mixed feelings that they graciously stepped aside for the good of the horses and let HfH bring them into their fold. It was quite moving and emotional for all involved.

Kudos to Melissa of HfH on her GREAT trailer handling abilities. They "guys" seemed impressed. The horses loaded perfectly with a minimum of fuss.

It all went perfectly! Thanks to EVERYONE who kept the ball rolling on this one!!!

I'm grateful beyond words,

~Dawn

Richardson Describes the Fight to Save Barbaro to Vets at AAEP
by: Deirdre Biles
December 02 2007, Article # 10916
ARTICLE TOOLSPrint Email
Republish Link RSS

Dean Richardson, DVM, Dipl. ACVS, opened the American Association Equine Practitioners Convention in Orlando, Fla., Saturday with an emotional, touching, and sometimes humorous talk about the more than eight month fight to save Barbaro's life following the colt's breakdown in the 2006 Preakness Stakes.

"I really think he did have a reasonable quality of life for a vast majority of that time," said Richardson, explaining why he and Barbaro's owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, tried for so long to keep the colt alive. "He did have an active and interesting life for a horse that was confined to his stall. He had neighbors. He met mares. And he had, obviously, lots and lots of attention. There wasn't any lack of attention that he received."

Richardson, who received two standing ovations, showed photographs of Barbaro nuzzling another horse that was a patient at the New Bolton Center, checking out a cat named Felix, and interacting with a cow, which stuck out her tongue at the colt. Barbaro also received a visit from Pennsylvania's governor, Edward G. Rendell, but didn't appear to enjoy it very much. The colt tried to bite the politician, according to Richardson.

"Barbaro was an extremely curious horse, a very, very bright and inquisitive horse," Richardson said.

The presentation also included graphic photos of the Barbaro's shattered right hind leg during surgery and his laminitis-ravaged left hind foot, which dramatically illustrated the imposing challenges faced by Richardson and his colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center. Early on, the surgeon described the chances for the colt's survival as a coin toss.

"A lot of people say, 'Well, were you being honest when you gave the original appraisal of the prognosis?" Richardson said. "I honestly believe if I had 50 of these come in, I could save 25 of them. I think that's a legitimate number right now with our abilities to treat this type of a fracture."

But, according to the surgeon, he might have erred on the side of caution in during the first operation on Barbaro.

"It’s a very difficult decision when you have skin and soft tissue that is that traumatized," Richardson said. "If I would have opened up the distal aspect of the (surgical) incision more aggressively, that would have allowed me to be more aggressive with the pastern joint and probably to get a better fixation of the pastern joint as part of the original procedure. I think that possibly would have made a difference. I really believe that we got into trouble because the pastern part of the fixation began to fail."

Following an operation in July of 2006 to stabilize the pastern, Barbaro developed an infection in his right hind leg and then foundered in his left hind foot, which ultimately led to "the failure of the case," Richardson said. "It was like a house of cards."

Barbaro, who captured the Kentucky Derby breaking down in the Preakness, was euthanatized in late January of this year. On a lighter note, Richardson said he received numerous suggestions from people about how to save Barbaro's life. Some thought Barbaro would do better if his mother would visit. Others recommended treatment with ocean water, noni juice, and oil of oregano.

"Very few things really got to me personally as far as irritating me," Richardson said. "But one thing that bothered me immensely was when people would imply that the only reason this was being done was for money. The Jacksons have a lot of money. They're rich people; there's no getting around it. They didn't need the money; they didn't want the money. This wasn't done for the money in any way, shape, or form. I made an awfully concerted effort to get that point across, and I hoped I succeeded."

This was sent to Dawn from Deputy Darling in Ellis regarding the two horses that were saved.

Thank you so very much for forwarding this article to me, and all the help you provided in helping to get the word out about the two horses in Ellis County. There was a local newspaper article written as well and I have been amazed & elated at all the responses I have gotten by emails & phone calls about the plight of these two. What truly seemed like a bleak situation last week, has completely turned around . Several citizens of our county called wanting to inquire and help as well. I then realized that somehow, some way, the buddies would be cared for and kept together. As of right now they are on their way to a new life via Habitat For Horses. The trusting Appaloosa was led to the open trailer door and after he was allowed to sniff it & then feel for the floor, he loaded right up . It wasnt but a couple of minutes later that the Bay Mare followed him in - totally of her own accord.

Thanks to everyone who cared and worked on this - to the citizens of Ellis County, Deputy Amy Ellison of the Ellis County Sheriffs Office, JoAnn Livingston @the Waxahachie Daily Light, , Dawn Walsh of Never-E-Nuff Acres of Waxahachie, and Habitat For Horses - especially Melissa Thompson.

Breeding Incentives Provide Boon to Kentucky Quarter Horse Industry

Incentives primarily aimed at encouraging Thoroughbred owners to breed their horses in Kentucky have created a boon for the Quarter Horse industry, and many breeding operations are relocating to the state.

Kentucky last year started the breeders' incentive fund by rerouting the tax revenue from stud fees to subsidies for Thoroughbreds and 10 other breeds, including Quarter Horses. The move was sparked by concerns from Thoroughbred breeders that mares would be moved to another state, perhaps one using casino revenues to try to attract them.

As intended, Thoroughbreds have received the vast majority of the payouts--$12.5 million out of $15 million allocated. But, the impact has been huge for the Quarter Horse industry too.

Next year, the total amount paid in Quarter Horse rewards figures to be $447,000--a 21% increase over this year.

Kentucky is "going to be on the map as far as Quarter Horses are concerned," said Norm Luba, president of the Kentucky Quarter Horse Association. "Prior to the legislation ... we weren't even close."

The boon in Kentucky has led to turmoil for Quarter Horse breeders from other states, such as Kevin and Amy Gumz, who had owned a breeding operation in Indiana the past 15 years. In September, Amy Gumz said, their business practically dried up overnight, mostly because of the Kentucky incentives.

By Oct. 1, the Gumzes moved to Kentucky too, following the "mass migration" of the breed.

"We are one of the leading breeders in the U.S., and I estimated we probably could only keep about 10% of our business if we hadn't moved to Kentucky," Amy Gumz said. "We went from having the highest-end horses to a few ... and not the quality we would have wanted."

To qualify for the rewards, Quarter Horses must be bred and foaled in Kentucky, although the mare doesn't have to reside there her entire pregnancy.

"It's the gold-rush days," said Robin Gollehon. "We've been (in Indiana) almost 20 years. We were pretty well-planted. But we've sold our place and we're moving to Versailles."

Gollehon Show Horses is moving from Indiana next month, bringing 40 horses to a farm in Versailles. Northwind Ranch also is relocating to Versailles from Texas, and DeGraff Stables is taking its 18 stallions from Ohio to Midway, Ky.

Each stallion that comes into the state generates 6% sales tax on the stud fee. Because artificial insemination is permissible in the Quarter Horse industry, stallions can breed between 150 and 200 mares a year, generating between $1,000 and $3,000 in stud fees for each.

"As more people contribute to the fund, there will be more rewards," Luba said. "I fully anticipated we would get lots of stallion interest. But I underestimated the number of people who would look at Kentucky as an opportunity."

Look at just this section in the article (thanks Debbie L.A..)

Thankful - written by David Foster (sung by Josh Groban)

Somedays, we forget to look around us,
Somedays, we can't see the joy that surrounds us,
so caught up inside ourselves,
we take when we should give,
so for tonight we pray for,
what we know can be,
and on this day we hope for,
what we still can't see,
It's up to us, to be the change,
and even though we all can still do more,
there's so much to be thankful for,
look beyond ourselves,
there's so much sorrow,
it's way to late to say, I'll cry tomorrow
each of us must find our truth,
it's so long overdue,
so for tonight we pray for,
what we know can be,
and everyday, we hope for,
what we still can't see,
it's up to us, to be the change,
and even though we all can still do more,
there's so much to be thankful for,
even with our differences,
there is a place WE'RE all connected,
each of us can find each others light,
So for tonight, we pray for
what we know can be,
and on this day, we hope for,
what we still can't see,
it's up to us, to be the change,
and even though this world NEEDS so much more
there's so much to be thankful for.

Street Sense trainer Nafzger wins Big Sport of Turfdom award

December 4, 2007

NEW YORK (AP) -- Carl Nafzger, trainer of Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, became a two-time winner of the Big Sport of Turfdom award Tuesday.

The award, presented by the Turf Publicists of America, is given each year to a person or a group enhancing thoroughbred racing through cooperation with the media.

"This wasn't the first time that Carl Nafzger was thrust into the national spotlight, but he was just as gracious and generous with his time as he was when he won this award 17 years ago," TPA president Eric Wing said.

Nafzger first won the award in 1990, the year he won the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders' Cup Classic with Unbridled. The 66-year-old Nafzger joins Laffit Pincay Jr. as the only two-time recipients of the award.

"This is tremendous honor," Nafzger said. "I never expected to get this award twice. I don't know what to say. I always do my best to cooperate with the media requests. I think we had a good time. I know I did."

Nafzger will receive the award in Beverly Hills, Calif, on Jan. 21.

Street Sense also won the Travers Stakes, and the Nafzger-trained Lady Joanne captured the Alabama Stakes.

229 letters!!! Way to go everyone:)

I also finished my letter late last night and thought I would post it here for any of you that might need an example:)

Dear Mr. Sorvino:

Please find attached the emails and letters that have been received to date, regarding the segment on horse slaughter which aired on Inside Edition November 26, 2007. In the last couple of days you have received about 200 letters and they are still coming in as I type this letter.

These letters are from Americans and Canadians wanting to thank you for speaking out against horse slaughter and asking you to get the truth about horse slaughter out to the public via prime time television. I have read each of the letters attached and have come to a conclusion that we all have one thing in common and that is stopping the brutal and barbaric butchering of the American Horse and getting the truth to the public.

I have forwarded letters filled with information, flyers, appeals to congress, personal experiences and more. Many have been fighting to get The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act passed by Congress and signed into law for years. We are not paid lobbyists; we are a large grassroots movement. As you know, public awareness will help tremendously in reaching our goal. It is astounding how many falsehoods and distortions regarding horse slaughter have been foisted upon the public by pro-slaughter supporters, yet rarely has the truth been revealed.

I cannot tell you how happy I am that our paths have crossed and am very thankful that you are allowing me to forward all of this information to you. I am proud to be a part of this very dedicated group of people and you will see why, once you have a chance to look over some of the letters. Our commitment comes from the heart and not from the pocketbook. If everyones profit motive from the slaughter of horses were removed, it would become evident that the need to slaughter horses has never existed.

Most Sincerely,

Has anyone asked Joe and Cathy Shelton to email a letter to Mr. Savino? I bet Joe could give them an earful. Also, I thought of the people that had first hand experience with the Centennial Auction in Colo. when Fair Dinkum tried to rescue some horses with FOB money and the killer buyers (along with the auctioneer) drove the prices up. If anyone has the inside scoop on what went on, that would be a good item to suggest media do some investigative reporting on in a letter to Mr. Savino.

Just a couple of thoughts...

DEBBIE T - brilliant idea about asking Joe from TB friends to send a letter - will you contact him? (He recommends calling on his cell rather than emailing.)

Posted by: Nancy in CT at December 5, 2007 12:06 AM

Update on the two saved in Texas from the DB

Vet says - the Appy is 22 years old and totally blind but in no pain, while the TB is 5 years old with possible in the Rt front. We'll have x-rays done Thursday. According to Melissa, the TB is now haltered, and acts as though she has never before been haltered or someone has severely beat her. Story goes that they have been in a pasture by themselves for the past year. When the SO contacted the owner, he told them that he didn't want them and it was too expensive to put them down so he just left them out there, a statement that shows an education level derived mainly from reading the backs of beer cans.

(You all could probably do without the editoral comments, but that attitude kinda' gets to me.)

Hello Barbaro,

Well, we're getting my beloved snow here in Minnesota but I'm afraid I'm a bit too cranky to enjoy it right now.

I've spent the last few days considering wearing a DayQuil "jewel" necklace strung together with tissue, accented with a "Winter Scene" box of Kleenex hung around my neck.

I've been having NyQuil nightcaps each night before bed.

I can pretty well handle flu symptoms, the highs and lows of Diabetes but give me a head cold and I am a "sniveling guppy"!

I sure hope your Dr. Richardson is working on a cure, treatment and prevention for Laminitis... and the common cold!

Okay, enough whining...

Let's grab your blanket and settle you in for the night. We'll pull it high on your neck and fluff the folds perfectly for nuzzling.

The snowfall is sooo beautiful Honey. It's like I'm living in a child's holiday snowdome that someone has lightly shaken.

The moon casts it's curious shadows across the snowy surface, throwing bits of sparkle for our eyes to follow and dance the night away.

Honey, you and your Fans have a star that will shine extra light on our fight to end horse slaughter.

His name is Mr. Sorvino. No Honey, don't give this star a kick to make him fall so that your Mommy can catch him and make a wish! Mr. Sorvino is a different kind of star... he's a celebrity.

This means that he has a job that many people pay to see his work. Like your job!

Mr. Sorvino is a kind-hearted star. He does not approve of horse slaughter at all Honey. And he is going to help America's horses by bringing the issue up in helpful ways and influential places.

So, follow your "star" Honey. Yes, we make wishes on stars, but this time, the star has a wish...

Your Dream Angels are scratching their heads in confusion. They don't understand the whole "celebrity star" thing. Please set their minds at ease and gently see them off to sleep...like they have for you so many nights.

Your healing is complete and strength will forever carry you through your days and nights and into the sweet dreams of your loved ones.

Sweet dreams Honey. I love you so much and you have inspired me in so many ways. Good night...XXOOxxoxo x

LaurieH, what a beautiful tuck-in. Just take care of yourself...get lots of rest. For me the first big snowfall is when it is so gorgeous. There is a hush and any sound would be an intrusion on the quiet of the landscape. The moon casts a beautiful silver-blue-white shine on the ground and it is then when the horses hooves crunch on the new-fallen snow. Rest peacefully, dear one.

Sherry, Gunner is gorgeous...and has a very strong energy that is apparent to me...now I will figure out a way to get to AZ in January to take a look at him and your other horses.

Must go...everybody have a wonderful evening.

My letter to Mr. Sorvino:

Mr. Sorvino:

I am the Washington State Group Leader of the Fans of Barbaro. My small group of dedicated volunteers has been working for nearly a year – every day. We share one very important goal: to stop the inhumane slaughter of American horses. I want to thank you, on behalf of the Washington State Fans of Barbaro, for becoming involved in this fight.

And it truly is a fight. Despite daily calls, faxes, and letters to our legislators, and despite the fact that poll after poll demonstrates that the American public is against horse slaughter – our legislators have failed us. They have done everything they can to make sure that the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act does not get a vote. In the Senate, it is burdened with the notorious secret “hold”, that prevents any bill from being voted upon. In the House, the bill has been buried in Committees that will insure the bill is never voted on.

Despite these odds, and despite having to fight against our own legislators, we will not stop in our efforts to ban this incredibly inhumane practice. American horses are not entrees on gourmet dishes around the world. American horses are part of our history. They trust us. They need us. They serve us every day of their lives. They provide us with entertainment – they run for their very lives; and many don’t make it off the tracks. They work for us, strive for us. They are loyal, strong, trustworthy. Which is so much more than we have been.

For more than a decade, we have sought federal legislation to halt this horror. We have not yet succeeded. With your help, and with the additional awareness you can bring to this cause, I trust we will succeed.

You carry with you so many hearts and thoughts – so many good people who want nothing more than to see the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act passed into law. We will not rest until this goal is reached and this result is accomplished.

Please help us. Please spread the word of how terribly our horses suffer as they are transported, without food and rest, to a nightmare that no living creature should endure. Spread the word of how they arrive, injured, broken, frightened and confused. Spread the word of how they are stabbed, shot, slaughtered, in front of each other. Spread the word of how we have betrayed their trust.

I am very grateful for your involvement. If you feel even just a small part of the dedication that comes from the group of people working tirelessly on this effort, I know you will be motivated to help us get the word out.

Why? Because we must – we must – stop the slaughter.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Thompson

Ringbone has been described as being articular or periarticular. Articularringbone exists when there is radiographic evidence of degenerative jointdisease such as partial or complete narrowing of the joint space, new boneformation at the joint margins (osteophytes), increased density of thesubchondral bone (sclerosis), or subchondral bone erosion (lysis).Periarticular ringbone exists when there is radiographic evidence of new bonegrowth away from the joint margins. This new bone growth can occur at sites ofligament or joint capsule origins or insertions (enthesophytes). New bonegrowth can also occur anywhere the connective tissue that covers the bone (theperiosteum) may have been damaged by external trauma such as blunt trauma ordeep cuts. Figure 2 displays normal joint structures on the left anddegenerative changes on the right.
