Barbaro Updates: 451

updates are now here.

Update 2821: Takeover Target, a true rags to riches story, is still thrilling his Australian connections in the Sprint division: Aussie Stars Clash in $100k Sprint.

Update 2820: A lovely afternoon spent in Smithville, TX with FOB Swedishkat.

Update 2819: We are in the midst of a letter writing campaign to enable Paul Sorvino to get some network air time to discuss the horse slaughter issue. If you can spare five minutes, and write a letter that Mr. Sorvino can include when he meets with networks tomorrow, that would be very helpful. More details here: Paul Sorvino WILL help get HS to MEDIA!!

Update 2818: A day off! Last night I spent a pleasant evening at the races. The crowd was much smaller but the races were fun. A few odd things occured. A jockey fell off a horse coming out of the gate, not sure why and I think the jockey was OK. The loose horse carried a few horses wide going around the first turn. A horse was scratched in the paddock in the last race. It seems the lip tattoo identified the horse as not being the horse he was supposed to be, or something like that. A second horse was "vet scratched" while loading in the gate.

I then went out afterwards for a couple of hours with Paul Nolan to celebrate his three Stakes wins from the night before. He was still very excited about the accomplishment, the first time he has ridden more than one Stakes winner on a card. Anyway, a fun evening as a prelude to a nice day off.

Keep calling and writing.

Repost from earlier this morning:

Good Monday Morning,

Our "Man in DC" Daryl S. is on his way to DC. Please keep him in your prayers for a safe trip from Minnesota (I think) and for success in DC.

EWWWW!

One of Obama's headquarter kids in IL read me a statement from the senator which begins by stating that he supports the rescue of WILD HORSES... so, of course, I had to tell him that was S247 LAST SPRING...then he talks like Ensign-Bird was yesterday--not TWO years ago....and finally gets around to say that Obama is supporting "SUPPORTING" S311:

Was this the wishy-washy statement to beat all? HELP> I told this guy SUPPORT was swell, but we needed Barack Obama to put his money where his mouth was now and take a stand. NOW>

ARGH.

Otherwise all calls done: GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Fans of Barbaro:

Incredible gains have been made in the last twelve months in the fight to end horse slaughter in the US. In fact, more has been accomplished in this last year than the previous five years combined. A huge component in these victories have been the efforts of The Fans Of Barbaro.

My recent trip to DC showed there is momentum for S. 311. With 37 co-sponsors and many senators who have said they will vote YES (but not co-sponsor for one reason or another) we are getting close. But there is a lot of work to be done and it’s time for the FsOB to stand up like we did before.

We must re-ignite the flame that fueled the many victories we gave to America’s horses. We must recapture the images of the horses we saw who suffered from the dark side of the human heart. These images made us mad and that anger was the catalyst that finally put the anti-horse slaughter bill on the senate radar screen.

I met Senator Mary Landrieu and I can tell you with all sincerity that she is totally committed to seeing this bill passed. Here is a statement from her a couple months ago after the Illinois slaughterhouse was finally shut down:

"The recent 7th Circuit court ruling upholding Illinois' ban on horse slaughter is a very positive step," said Sen. Landrieu. "But it is not enough—we must ensure that horse slaughter is prohibited in every state in America. Now America's horses are being beaten and dragged across the border into Mexico and Canada so that they can be inhumanely slaughtered for food. I will continue to fight in Congress to end this brutal practice and ensure that American horses will no longer be savagely slaughtered for human consumption. "

She says she “……..will continue this fight……!” And these words pound away at my heart…..”beaten and dragged”………”inhumanely slaughtered for food”………..”savagely slaughtered!” Hay, we are talking about Barbaro’s brothers and sisters. So I too will continue this fight. Barbaro expects those whom he hoof selected to continue, not back away. He needs us to come together again and support Senator Landrieu.

Here’s an example of fighting in Barbaro’s spirit.

On Friday, Nov. 16, Martita catches an early train from NYC. She travels to DC. Her reason: to support the FsOB. To support all of us and our efforts. She said she needed to thank Senator Landrieu and her staff for their work to end horse slaughter. She danced in the Senator’s office. Tears and lumps in the throat were quite evident. And her love for Barbaro………words cannot describe the depth of that love. When she speaks of him, her eyes twinkle, she smiles , her voice fills with passion and she literally glows.

Here’s an excerpt from ESPN’s “Church Of Barbaro” regarding Martita:

"Barbaro was in many dimensions," she says. "He looked at the whole picture. That's why he had that stumble at the Derby. He was ahead of the moment. The Zen of that. That's dancing. For the rest of my life, I'll be working to move with that innocence."

"Barbaro’s eyes were so discerning - his intelligence so worldly. It took my breath away!”

She leaned in, looking Barbaro in the eye. She refused to look at his legs. Whispering, she said, "Dearest Barbaro, I imagine you might want to be getting out of this stall."

A day later, he was dead. Inconsolable, she wrote a letter, part to the Jacksons, part to the horse. "I begin the long journey to complete the work you began here on earth," she wrote. "With shattered heart but flaming red soul I send you all my love and hope in the light in the light in the light."

"I begin the long journey to complete the work you began here on earth!” Martita has never wavered nor have many Fans Of Barbaro. We must walk the path she has carved and help her “complete the work you began here on earth.” We were called to this mission as was Martita. Barbaro’s spirit lives within her and I know it lives within all of us, all who have come this far. We have endured the pain of losing Barbaro, the anguish of seeing America’s horses being butchered and fought our way through the hate and anger at the Illinois accident. We are, quite frankly, an amazing group of people. We have saved more than 1500 horses, donated hundreds of thousands of dollars and raised public awareness. FsOB have gone on tv, as Michelle did last week. Many others have had articles printed in major newspapers. The calling groups have made a huge impact.

Yes, we are an amazing group! A group that has been fundamental in the many successes over the last year. And it is this group that must push harder than ever to complete this difficult task that Barbaro has laid before us.

In the ESPN story, “The Church Of Barbaro,” there is a section about Barbaro’s connections trying to “move on!” Then, the article switches to us. Here’s what it says:

“The fans aren't there yet. The obsession that made them easy targets of bloggers and lampooners has, improbably, grown. They formed a circle, and even with the horse no longer in the middle, the circle remains. His death only binds this community tighter. They've become apostles in the church of Barbaro.”

Our circle remains. We have stood up to criticism, overcome in-fighting, our combined inner strength has been the foundation for achievements while facing sadness and hurt & our belief that we will win this fight provides the steadfast resolve needed to do so.

I disagree with one statement above: “…….and even with the horse no longer in the middle…….” Barbaro will always be in “the middle.” He is why we are here. He is why we fight. He IS here. He’s in our hearts and our minds. And that combination represents the most powerful tool on earth: truth! And that’s Barbaro’s message. We have been spreading that message, we have made considerable gains as a result and we will continue in that vein until horse slaughter ends!

Yes, our circle remains. We all love Barbaro. And he asked each and everyone of us to fight for his brothers and sisters. And so we have. And the accomplishments are many and they are great! But the ultimate victory, the end of the torture, the end of the butchering, the end of horse slaughtering, remains before us. The work will remain difficult but this group is up to it. The senators return to DC December 3rd and will be in sessions for one to three weeks. We have to use this time to push hard, make our voice heard, ask for those co-sponsorships, ask for those letters of support that Senator Landrieu needs to move this bill. Make your calls, they do make a difference. Recruit relatives, friends, neighbors.

Barbaro gave me many gifts, including friendships that will last a lifetime. I can only thank him by doing two things: never leaving this fight and seeing to it that the President of the United States signs S. 311 into law. It should be called “The Barbaro Bill!” If it’s not officially titled that, we, the Fans Of Barbaro, will be okay with that because like all other things Barbaro, “We Get It!”

G'morning dear "famblee !!" As many of you know - my lovely Gunner arrived last night - and he greets all of you this morning warmly !!!

I can see that he is already becoming a "poster horse" in our continuing battle to get the legislation passed. He is passing on a message:

As we know - Uncle Daryl Smoliak (YUP .... he's already adopted Uncle Daryl !!) is enroute to Washington DC for the 3rd encounter with senators and house reps. First - let's surround Uncle Daryl with safe travels.

Uncle Daryl has told me he has appointments scheduled and will remain in DC until the senators leave for home/holiday break - which will likely be in 2 weeks. Anyone who has a senator or rep who has not committed to S311 or HR 503 - and would like Uncle Daryl to meet with the Chief of Staff OR key people in that office - please contact Daryl at his email address and he will get back with you.

Please do this ...... for me - who has found a loving home in Arizona - and for my many brothers and sisters - who also wait .........

Good morning, fellow Fans, from snowy Maine!

Because of the weather, I am off work so my contacts have been made. And I sent some information to my hold-out Congressman and his aide for their consideration. And, she even replied with a "Thank you" and a "Stay warm"! Amazing!

I haven't said this in a while, but thanks to Alex and Tim and Penny for hosting this virtual community. Imagine where we'd be without this good place.

Peace and warmth (or cool) to everyone today. Off to tackle my chore list. (It's a day off from my job but not the work!)

###Bloodhorse.com has comments by Dr. Richardson about Barbaro. In so many words, he blames himself for the failure to save him because of the way he did the fixation right after the accident. He says he would have done it different now. Jen

Hi Fambleeeeeee:) MEEEEE....again!!!

O.K., through these 'bleary', "I've o'slept" eyes, I realize I wasn't REALLY only number THREE, unklealex was a wee bit late this morning:)

I am reposting a comment from our very own Mary S. from last night....around 9:30p West Wing time....I'm reposting this because it IS from our very own MARY S. please read and then go WRITE:)

Repost:
Lucille Matte only has 100 letters to give to Paul Sorvino!! How can that be? We need many more than that by 5:00 pm tomorrow (Monday).

Send your letter asking Paul Sorvino to help us stop horse slaughter, by giving it the media attention this issue deserves. I just do not believe the American public will let this go on once they know about it. The public will move this Congress.

Send your letter to: mortgagematte @ earthlink.net

Let's go FOB - this is our chance to get this national media attention. Mr. Sorvino is meeting with producers on Tuesday. He will hand carry these letters to show there is a demand for media coverage.

This is an incredible opportunity. Don't let it pass us by.

Sent my letter off and got a reply from Lucille, great to see someone like Paul Sorvino finally trying to get some media exposure for our equine friends.

Calls and faxes will be done today, hope everyone is rested up and ready for 2 weeks of working hard to convince Congress we need these bills passed - and before Christmas.

Jenny's on Radio - I posted last week when she ran that she looked like she did not want to be there, dropped far back and struggled to get home. That was in a 50,000 claiming race, now I am horrified to see her in again this week for 15,000. I was hoping the trainer and owners would listen to her instead of making her run again, this is so sad.

great update on The Tin Man's recuperation; crossposting from message 17384.1 posted by godmom2 at the DB:

The Tin Man healing nicely

The Tin Man, the 9-year-old multi-millionaire, continues to heal from a fractured knee suffered in late October, and is being walked briefly each day as part of his rehabilitation, said Mandella, who trained him.

"He's getting better all the time," Mandella said. "We've got him walking short walks a couple of times a day. We're doing very little and it seems to be helping."

Mandella said that The Tin Man "started getting sour being tied up so much."

"He's sounder and happier every week," Mandella said. "We X-ray him every week and it shows knitting every week."

A winner of 13 of 31 starts and $3,663,780, The Tin Man suffered the injury while recovering from ankle surgery. As a result of the injury, The Tin Man was retired but remains at Mandella's stable at Santa Anita while recovering.

Edited to add additional comments from one of Richard Mandella's exercise riders:

Richard has been walking Tinny around the shed himself, very slowly and very carefully, everyone clears out and they make a couple of rounds and then with the help of 2 other people guiding him Tinny is backed into his stall.

The first day he was walked he wore Mandella out, Tinny had some Ace in him and a lip chain on and you could see the light in his eyes, he was dragging Richard around and definatly looking for trouble. It was so cute after they got him back in his stall Richard gave him a good head pet and smiled at him and said" you old bugger", but the boss was just as delighted to get Tinny out and walking as Tinny was to be out and walking.
Tinny got shod yesterday because his toes were getting really long, his feet looked great this morning and they had no heat and they trailed the shoe just a little bit to give him extra support. Thanks agian for everyone's well wished and thoughts and cards, it does mean so much to everyone at the barn.

HERE'S WHY WE CALL. HERE'S WHY WE NEED TO SUPPORT THE EXISTING RESCUES. HERE'S WHY WE NEED TO HELP START UP NEW RESCUES. JOE NEEDS MORE LAND.

I ASK GOD TO LOOK AFTER THE ARCHANGELS HE PLACED ON OUR IMPERFECT PLANET TO TAKE CARE OF THE HORSES NO ONE WANTS, NO ONE CAN AFFORD TO FEED, TO HEAL, TO KEEP.

I try not to get crazy...but you know, it makes me call more, maybe I will write another letter to Paul SOrvino and send it to Lucille.

It is asking so little. The FoBs give so much...remember, there is always room in your heart for giving away more love, more effort. Effort costs nothing.

God watch over Joe and Cathy and Daryl and Alex and all our angels here to help us see clearly what needs to be done.

FoBs are the best. I love you all.
Dee: send out those rainbows this week, girl. They help so much, my friend.

Monday,December 3rd... They say flies only live 7 or 8 days, but we have had the same one on our computer screen for 3 months. He likes when I visit the Food Network. Flies away when the morning journal appears...

So cold there are no more flies outside. Strong winds right now, and later today we might be 53 degrees. 108 horses on our poop on top of poop ranch. Turn around and you will bump into a horse. Take a step back and you will bump into a horse. Netflix sent season 6 of The Sopranos, and our big bird Maggie is learning a bunch of bad words. It has been weeks since Maggie has gone outside. Way too cold, and she is bored. Tony Soprano keeps Maggie happy.

Wheeling and dealing on the phone with horse killer Manny Phelps, and later today from his feed lot will come a young thoroughbred without a racing tattoo. He is about 3 years old, and comes with shoes. Wheeling and dealing on the phone with horse killer Wade Giles, and tomorrow from his feed lot will come an older thoroughbred gelding with a racing tattoo. He also comes with shoes.

Today will be the 27th day in a row we have placed a horse in a new home. A neglected quarter horse mare in Napa will climb aboard a trailer and be delivered to Nina in Vacaville. A big Thank You to Jennifer Wright for providing the transportation. And a big Thank You to Nina for saying sure, bring her to me. Never a hesitation.

Also today we say goodbye to Flirt, and we hardly got to know her. Flirt came to us last Thursday from an event trainer, and today she travels to her new barn in Orangevale. A big Thank You to Gary Duncan for providing the transportation.

Horses who need help. The following horses are free. They are located all over Northern California. All come with a story, which we seldom share. We are not here to judge others. We only try to help needy horses. And remember, there is no such thing as a Free horse. These horses will cost you money for vet care, foot care, dental work, not to mention a ton of groceries. If you would like to help give me a call at 530-383-2120.

A whole bunch (hi to Katie Bunch) of senior citizens. They are all breeds, mostly skinny, located from Turlock to Williams. From Lincoln to San Jose.

An unbroke morgan filly with a club foot.

An unbroke paint filly who has never had a halter on.

An unbroke thoroughbred colt who has never had a halter on.

An unbroke thoroughbred filly and she will probably come to our ranch, but she has never had a halter on.

A young thoroughbred gelding who is too hot for his owner.

A young palomino stud, and part of the deal is you must pay for castration. He is broke to ride, but lame.

Lots of horses and we do not know their breeds. Only their circumstances, and it is not a pretty sight.

Many of the above horses will be sent to upcoming auctions. Many are waiting in fields, hoping for a new home. Some are already in a home, but must be moved. The stories go on and on. Horse killers Manny Phelps, Timothy Cruz and Wade Giles all know how to use the internet. They search for free horses, and bid against each other at auctions.

I bought five bucks in lotto tickets. Land is badly needed, and I could buy one thousand acres and those one thousand acres would easily be filled with unwanted horses.

When slaughter stopped it was suppose to get better. Silly me. The saddest sight on earth is an animal that is hungry.

But my goodness. Gasoline is out of sight. Hay is scarce and the prices keep rising. Horses become a throw away item.

Connie in Rio Linda found a horse tied to her gate.

Allison in Auburn found a horse tied to her mailbox.

Jeff and Anna came home from work to find a horse tied to their gate. This one came with a note taped to his neck. The note said Please Feed Me And Give Me A Good Home.

On the phone with Cora Mason last night. She calls to ask if I will put my cell phone next to the ear of Gone Cattin. Well okay then. I can hear Cora Mason, and this is what she has to say to her horse: Is your blanket warm enough? Did you already eat? I look at your picture 24-7 and I love you so much Cat. I get to come see you Christmas weekend. I mailed you some cookies, so make sure Joe gives them to you.

High and low we go. The days are filled with good and bad. Thank goodness for all of you who love horses.

Joe

A new gelding from the race track, and his name is Key Maker. His picture is below on the left. A very sweet horse, and he is badly injured.

One of the highs from yesterday came when Michelle Henderson takes home Prideov Fappiano. We call him Pride. Earlier this year Michelle adopted Dixieland Jam, and she now has her own place. Below on the right is Stephanie, Pride, and Michelle. Pride raced all over America, and he is personality plus. I already miss him.

The fine art of Hienie Dancing:
*********************************
(For Susan E. and all others who might be curious:)
***********************************
Hienie Dancing was invented by my now gloriously beautiful and grownup niece, Faith.

She did it the first time during a "fashion show" we were putting on for her parents when she was 3--I think. I was known as The Queen of Shopping back then, was making tons of money and basically clothed her till she was 5 or so...

She came down the stairs in one of the new dresses, and at the bottom of the stairs, on a little landing, she turned around, lifted the skirt and wiggled her naked, rosy, little bottom back and forth and then danced around in a circle.

Now, everyone who has had a little kid in their life knows that when what they have done puts the adults on the floor spewing coffee and weeping with laughter, The Act which has provoked this
hilarity becomes a Family Standard.

(I requested a Hienie Dance from her in her wedding gown, but she wouldn't.)

Anyhow: there you have it. And see? it brought Gunner home safe and sound, did it not???

European Draft Foal update - just read the weekend posts and Martita's post about saving this little guy is heartbreaking. We only have until tonight to raise a little more money, please help if you can, the thread in on DB. My sister's little boy, who goes to see Over Enough all the time wanted to save a horse because he can't have one of his own, so my sister sent in a donation to help this little guy.

Sherry - congrats on Gunner's arrival, your life will never be the same and definitely for the better.

Okay, have written Paul Sovino. This is our big chance we have been waiting and working for. ###Margie, Taos is beautiful. Lubbock is not-about all we have here are cattle and cotton. Oh yeah. we are the home of Buddy Holley (for what that means) and I had a study hall with him in high school and thought he was kind of a nerd. well, little did I know. ###can hardly read about the cruelty in mexico. It seems the killers enjoy making it as cruel as possible. Just spurs me on.

From: Gunner
To: My FsOB famblee

My Aunt Elaine and I have been in correspondence for several days.

I am including my "homecoming" for your to hopefully enjoy !

Funny thing - Auntie Elaine has been interested in animals - "on the fringe" for many years - but ... she seems really "taken" with me.

What did some famous man say: The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man ????
This must be WHY !

Sherry's friend has now taken 101 pictures of me since my arrival yesterday. Some will be posted on the DB later, I promise ..... Auntie Lynne !!!!

In the meantime ...... please think of me, and Sherman and Willie and Fitch and soooooo many more ...... who have been touched by the FsOB spirit ......... and ..... write to Mr. Sorvino ... and email Uncle Daryl .... until he has no space left on his computer ..... and let him know who you want him to talk to ! That's why he's there ......... I plan to write to Mr. Sorvino later today .......... and so will my new Mom, Sherry. Please .. do the same.

Here is my homecoming:

Dear Auntie Elaine !

Wanted to let you know ..... I made it safely to Apache Junction. Travis, the driver, was sooooo nice. He even made it to Sherry's place early ... around 4:30 pm ...... so that it was still light out !!!!

There were 3 other horses on the trailer. It was kind of funny ! Sherry came running over .......
looking carefully at each horse. I could almost read her mind ! She kept thinking ..... is this him ..... is this him ........ hahaha ............ BUT ..... I was the only pure black horse ......... and when her eyes landed on me ...... it was pretty neat ......... you could just tell that her huge smile (much like Barbaro's at that very moment) was ............ of pure love !!!! Man ........ I've got her eating out of my hoof already !!!!

Travis had to back out another horse from the trailer ..... and then .. he and I walked out.

Again ... I watched Sherry ....... and I think she was pretty amazed that I am sooooo tall !!!

She grabbed hold of the lead rope and walked me around a little ........ she was pretty hyped ....... and I purposely went into my "very long stride" mode ....... and I could again, see her wheels turning .... as she imagined us out on the trail ..................... thinking ........ oh my gosh ....... this horse has a very long stride ...... we will really cover some ground quickly !!!!!

Sherry's friend came to take pictures .... and he began snapping a zillion of them .... his dog, Echo was running around barking ............ Sherry was up and back ..... getting money for Travis ...... and filling TWO bags with goodies for Travis and his friend ..... stuff like fresh donuts, chips, cookies, pretzels, Gatorade, water, Reese's peanut butter stuff .................

Gary walked me into the round corral .............. I've got a cool new halter with fuzzy stuff on it ..... and neat blue lead line ......... I walked through the wash like I "owned the place."

Sherry was wide eyed this whole time ......................
thinking, I know, oh my ..... what a guy ! He's so mellow (hahaha .......... I've got her fooled !!) ..........
all of this newness ...... and he's just taking it in !!!!

Sherry's friends, Jo and Gary came to meet me too !!! Wow .... There are alotta nice people here in Apache Junction.

Warpaint and Dakota checked me out but good ........ from the arena. I know they were thinking ... who the heck is that ??????????

YUP ......... MOM's letting me spend the nite in their round corral and they're back in their stalls ...... hahaha ...... new kid on the block wins prime spot !
Mom's been out to check on me during every commercial (she watched the Hallmark Hall of Fame program tonight, she said. More "feel good" stuff !!")
She keeps giving me more grass hay ............ and pouring small amounts of corn oil on it.
Auntie Linda (boy .... does she ever know a lot about horses !) ...... has said .... it's a good way to put some "meat on my bones !!" You know ............ Mom's a "Jewish Mother" ........ and "eat ..... eat" .... is her motto !!!!

It'll get to low 40's tonite ........ MOM is concerned ..... will I be warm enough ??? I think, IF I wait long enough ..... she may just join me out here in the round corral for the nite ! IF so ...... maybe I can read her a bed time story. YAWN ................... long day here ...............
I'm not waiting anymore .................... I'm going to sleep.

G'nite everyone. Just wanted to let you know ........ I'M HOME !!

Gunner

Roll Call..Harriette?? HERE!!!

Famblee I have an announcement to make on this another Monday without Barbaro... I have finished my book and have started the self publishing process. I am nervous, excited, and thankful for my famblee and most of all to the horse that inspired me, at 55 years old to undertake writing a book, our Sweet Angel in Hevvin, Barbaro..

Here is the Acknowledgement part of the book:

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

Mohandas Mahatmi Gandhi

Acknowledgements

The story and characters in this book are entirely fiction. However, horse slaughter is real and is going on even today. At this writing the last operating horse slaughter plant in the U.S. has closed due to an Illinois law banning slaughter being passed.

There are now no horse slaughter plants operating in the United States, however, our horses are being transported to Canada and Mexico where they meet a more brutal death than they did here.

Until federal legislation banning the transport of horses for human consumption is passed, our horses will continue to be brutally killed and sent overseas for human consumption.

Horses are an American icon. They have carried our men in battles, domestic and abroad, carried settlers all over America by wagon train, horseback and stagecoach. They once carried the mail across this land. They have rounded up cattle and sheep and plowed our fields. The American West is symbolized by cowboys and horses. Our horses deserve better than to end up on a foreign dinnerplate.

I would like to thank the great horse Barbaro for making me aware of this atrocity.
I fell in love with Barbaro watching him win the 2006 Kentucky Derby. When he broke his leg in the 2006 Preakness, I and thousands more followed his eight month struggle for life. During those eight months a group of people nationwide bonded as the Fans of Barbaro. We pledge to stop the slaughter of horses for human consumption in his name and for his legacy. We lost Barbaro January 29, 2007.

Inspired by Barbaro, I began to write, poetry at first and then this book. At age 55, I have fulfilled my mother’s dream for me.

Harriette

When your book is published I will be first in line to purchase it.

Is this the book that you asked for FOB stories?

Posted by: cathypotter/california at December 3, 2007 4:52 PM

## Cathy, no this is not the FOB book..this is a murder mystery that also tells the reading audience about the horrors of slaughter..just another venue to get the word out to people who are totally unaware..

Only 5 people have read the book and all want a sequel so I feel pretty good..

EXTRA MON. 12/3 NAT'L TARGET LIST (HAHS)

PREFACE/Heads-Up per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/ request: Ask the Senators who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Senator Mary Landrieu, sponsor and promoter of the Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all calls.

IMO - convey the website www.vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - to counteract the position of the 2 big vet ass'ns. Links to their two latest antislaughter releases are in this post

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=17455.1

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-459-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy - including Letter to Paul Sorvino (see Alex's update up top, linking to ABR DB message 17355.1) and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE NEW SUGGESTION/CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE Prior HS History above the LIST OF SENATORS below.)

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?

Here is today's (Monday 12/3) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 to the Senators and HR 503 to the Representatives; ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the current/new ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind.

The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

Adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who in not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

PRIOR HS HISTORY - All Senators from the list voted for the 2005 Ensign-Byrd Agriculture Appropriations Amendment. None of them cosponsored S. 1915 last year. Per Daniel of HAHS, "We will also contact again the first cluster of Senators from the special contact list provided by our lobbyists..."

reposting - details re Paul Sorvino letter

GREAT MEDIA CONTACT OP - COMPOSE LETTER TO PAUL SORVINO -

Hey Famblee, remember how great Paul Sorvino and his daughter were on the Inside Edition horse slaughter piece? We have a serendipitous opportunity to send him letters that will in turn be used to fuel media coverage of the issue. I've been asked to crosspost this info from the DB. Please go here (Lucille's post from this past Thursday 11/29):

http://forums.prospero.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=17355.1

and compose a heartfelt letter addressed to Paul Sorvino, and email it to Lucille at addy provided at that post (set out below). Here's how she explains what's up:

Hey Everyone!

Some of you may have run across the Inside Edition thread that was under rescue a couple of days ago discussing the program that aired on Inside Edition November 26th. A nice young lady named Michelle that is a friend of the Sorvino family made a couple of post on that thread. I posted to her asking if Mr. Sorvino could help us get the media's attention and broadcast more about horse slaughter on national television. She responded for me to email her privately so we could discuss. Well one thing led to another and I ended up on the telephone with Paul Sorvino today. He cares very much about the horses and wants the bills passed as badly as we do. He agreed to help in anyway he can and to do interviews with the media. Great guy!

So with the help of a few others that I was put in touch with I have come up with a plan and everyone agrees it is a good one. That is where you all come in:) I need letters!!! My first goal is to collect at least 100 letters from people that support The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

Please address the letters to Paul Sorvino, here are a few things you can mention in your letter!

You could thank him for helping to stop the slaughter of American Horses.

Ask him for help in getting the truth out about horse slaughter to the American public via a national television network.

If you have sent letters to major networks in the past you can mention something about that and say you don't understand why none of the major networks will do the story.

Mention something about horse slaughter and why it is so wrong.

Use your imagination and put your heart into the letter - include, your name and contact information so if the media wants to use your letter or contact you they will have the information. If you can add a signature to your letter that would be great! I will not give any of your personal information to anyone other than the Sorvino's and the media.

Please email the letter to mortgagematte@earthlink.net be sure to put media in the subject line. If you want to fax me the letter please email me and I will give you a fax number.

Thanks everyone! This just may be the break we have been waiting for! It would be great to see a national network do a broadcast about horse slaughter right now!!!

Also post a note on here [the DB thread linked above] when you email a letter so I can look for it! I get so many emails I don't want to miss any to spam etc.

"A Horse that is slaughtered has NO chance of being rescued, a Horse in a field does." Lucille Matte

Adding Lucille's recent Message 102 from the above thread:

I just got a phone call and we need to get as many letters together Monday for a meeting on Tuesday. Then we need to keep writing for meetings next week 1000 letters were mentioned YIKES!

Please everyone do another blast email to everyone and ask them if they haven't sent their letters to please send them! [end of crossposts from DB]

This is such a great opportunity; I hope many many many FOBs will take advantage of it.

We've all been bewailing the lack of celebrity support; here's a celebrity who's already proven his dedication to our cause, vowing to do media antislaughter work, and asking for our letters to fuel his work. We need to answer the call.

Alex - thank you for posting the link for information regarding letters to Mr. Sorvino.

Keep those letters coming everyone. The deadline is 5:00 pm today! Send your letter to Lucille, asking Mr. Sorvino to help get national media coverage for the atrocity of horse slaughter. Pour your hearts out regarding how you feel about this issue. Let's show the producers it is not a handleful of people that are against horse slaughter. Mr. Sorvino will hand deliver these letters to producers this week. It is a great opportunity to bring awareness to the American public. Ask your family and friends to write - we need more letters!

Wanted to share this email I got from lj (jock4hire) about her partner, Diamond Jim Brooks, who just was proclaimed leading jockey at Lone Star Park for the 3rd year in a row, despite his 4-month layup recovering from that bad rotator cuff injury earlier this year. Here's her good news:

Hi Famblee!!

I was gonna wait until the morning to bring this news to you but I can barely contain myself here any longer,............Most of you realize tonight was the last night of the Lone Star Park meet here in Grand Prairie, TX. and I just wanted to tell you that Jim won 3 races tonight,....passing Arturo Puga who was
1 race in front of Jim in the standings, night before last and 2 in front of Rodrigo Vallejo, and Jim rode to reclaim his Leading Jockey title for the third year in a row. Puga however didn't get to race last night or tonight. It seems Arturo Puga wasn't himself and the INS picked him up, and sent him back across the border. We still don't think it'd have been easy for Puga to claim the title away from Jim this year. Or let me say that I don't think so. I never give up the faith in Jim's abilities.

At 56 he's in better shape than he's ever been and riding better than ever before. Goes to show you that you can't keep the good ones down!! Jim is happy he won but he'd have rather rode against Puga for the title all the way to the end. Even if that had meant Puga gettin' the buckle. That's just how Jim is. Rather that than to pass him up this way with Puga being taken away after he rode at Tia, and got caught trying to put one over on the industry. He's gotten away with it for a couple of years already apparently.. Puga won't be allowed to even apply for a jock's license here in the U.S. for at least 10 years and probably a lot longer,..... if the rumors are true. Anyway thought you all would be happy for Jim and please know that we're very happy and proud to be giving you all this very good news at this Holiday Season time of the year!!

So once again for the third straight year now, Diamond Jim Brooks comes back from 4 months injured and on the bench to reclaim his Leading Jockey title at the Fall Meeting of Champions here at Lone Star Park!!!! Now that's what I call a comeback Go Jim Go and a BIG WOOO HOOOOOO!!! And a yay too!! Course I'm proud as punch. The ol' man done it good!!

Thanks to all of you who have written to Jim in support of his getting right back to it the way he did, and also to all those who believed all the way that Jim would get this Buckle!! They're even gonna be putting his name on this one!!!!! Hope you all are just as happy as we are with this news!!! This was fun telling you too!!!! Smile smile SMILE!!!!!!!!! You know we are!!!!! And Happy too!!!

Smile, ...........it don't get no better than this!!!

ANOTHER LETTER TO PAUL SORVINO (mine)...

Dear Mr. Sorvino,
I am writing to express my gratitude for your continued efforts on behalf of America’s beloved horses through your rescue facility and, in particular, my appreciation for your pledge to attempt to bring the issue of horse slaughter before the American public via major news outlets.

I am ashamed to admit that I was blissfully ignorant of this horrendous practice until becoming involved with the Fans of Barbaro 18 months ago, but am now proud to be one of the warriors who will NEVER give up the fight until the slaughter of our American horses ends forever via federal legislation…which will also ban the transport of our horses across our borders for the purposes of slaughter.

While I commend the members of Congress who have cosponsored S311/HR503 and thank them for their support, there are still many legislators who have turned a deaf ear to the cries of nearly 80% of Americans who want this barbarism to cease NOW. This issue definitely needs more public exposure, and your willingness to assist in this effort is truly heartwarming.

I am certain that I am “preaching to the choir” when I briefly outline my reasons for opposing horse slaughter:
• Horses are NOT livestock – they are pleasure, sport, companion and service animals;
• The vast majority of slaughtered horses are NOT unwanted – many are stolen; many others are obtained through fraudulent practices by “kill-buyers” pretending to their innocent victims that they will provide “good homes” to the horses they purchase;
• The horrendous cruelty of the auction, transport and slaughter practice is a disgrace to what purports to be “American morality”;
• Horse slaughter is nothing more that a huge profit-driven enterprise for foreign companies who supply wealthy European and Asian consumers with the meat of OUR horses…rest assured that no third-world children are saved from starvation by the sacrifice of our horses;
• Horse slaughter WAS not, IS not, and never WILL be an acceptable substitute for humane euthanasia.

Should you or your media contacts need more data regarding “the myth of the unwanted horses,” I would respectfully suggest this article as a viable source of information:

I applaud your conviction to help bring an end to this barbaric practice, and wish you every success in enlightening the media.

Sincerely yours,

I almost cried when I read the statement "Gunner is Home". How sweet those words are. I wish thaat for every dear horse waiting in the killer pens or hungry and scared there would be a home waiting. ###Harriette, will look forward to buying your book. ### I dont know aout Obama. I think the aides just say anything sometimes to get rid of us. Have news for them - We are here and we are not going away.

a very
magical horse
sings out in some old language
from a picture on the forum
i checked the forum
a few days ago and saw a plea for saving a 7 month year old draft horse
the picture shows a sense from him
even in his darling baby fat
that he is facing death

i used a magnifying glass
to look at his eyes and i cried
i have begun prayers for his life
i found fifty dollars and sent it to the pay[all account folks

i feel he is calling us
and in honor of everything i believe in

i want to bring him to a safe home to live out a wonderful life

please check it out..

if each of us even gave ten dollars to fiftyor any thing you can
afford at this time
we could meet his deadline by tuesday

he has a skin color like a doe
and these magnificent black socks
his body is ready to work
..it is his joy and he obviously has a wonderful disposition
by the looks of his body language

i hear so many ancient songs in him

this may be my sherman
i would take him
in a flash but sea cliff is hardly the place and
he lives in that europe that eats him
i sense in his breath
he is wise beyond his years
and to have to face slaughter
after the trust he has begun to grow..

i cant believe the betrayal that would be..
i am going to dig even deeper
and find some more money
i dont want him to die
-such an arrogance on our part
to not even ask permission to kill him
..and for what?

he is an example from some other time of interwoveness
wiht his community
where they treasured each living animal espec a draft horse
.
bless him and everyone of you who care
pray we can save him,
carry him in your heart
such an inspiration

I just sent my Sorvino letter. I added that the bill in front of Congress hopefully includes a provision that no horse should be sent to either Mexico or Canada without a guarantee that a home awaits him/her and that he/she will be kept alive. Otherwise, I fear that the horses will be transported supposedly to be re-homed and then will be slaughtered anyway.

Just emailed my Sorvino letter to Lucille. Evidently there is a deadline so I did not wait to get home from the office.

Please...if you haven't written a letter yet, DO IT. This could be a huge break for our effort. You just never know.

That's just the deadline for the meeting he is having tomorrow with big media execs, I think. If you miss this deadline, SEND A LETTER ANYWAY to the email addy provided; it will be used in the NEXT meeting. There's more than the one scheduled. (per info up at the DB)

Hay, FOB's!

###
Have been back from the ranch for a short time, catching up on e-mails and posts.

###
Did today's legislative nudging and FINALLY was able to get my letter to Paul Sorvino to Lucille (got lost in cyberspace not once, but TWICE...but I was determined to get it to her...). Please, if you have not written your letter to Mr.Sorvino, please do it. Now. This is a tremendous opportunity to get some media attention - shine the light into the darkness of slaughter.

###
Latest ranch news - there is new ladyhorse being boarded at the ranch and I met her 20 minutes after she arrived. I'm not sure of the spelling of her name, but she is full-blooded Arabian - El Shakkah is her name and, ohhhhhh, is she ever beautiful. Her mane is a little bit lighter than Illusion's, but otherwise, she could be his twin. Willow brought Illusion into the barn to meet her and Shakkah began nickering even BEFORE Illusion entered. They were in adjacent stalls for about 90 minutes and she is in LOOOOVE. Illusion is also smitten but is playing it cool. Stormy and Windy could have cared less.

Life is so darn good.

OKay have made my calls here's what I got!

Clair McCaskill – did not get Nicole Distefano, but talk to a nice young man who said he would tell the Senator.
He said I couldn’t say she will support this bill, but she did support the Wild horse from slaughter bill. And he said she would be letting us know soon!

Robert Casey- this aide was a hoot, your name and where are you calling from please, and what group are you
With? Fan’s of Barbaro. Holed, he came back and told me to call my two senators Sessions and Shelby. I said yes I have. Are you saying Senator Casey is not talking to people who are not from his state? Is this not a national issue?
He said yes it is, and will tell Sen. Casey. I got ticked with him.

Bob Corker- I told the first aide why I was calling, and he thanked me.

Jon Tester I told the aide why I was calling. Then sent me too Matt Jennings voice mail: (

Mitch McConnell – Put me on holed for along time! The aide I talked with said the aide handling S 311 is Kevin.
But he took my message down.

John Sununu – Very nice young man, T. Bosse is the aide he thinks is handling the bill.

Barack Obama – This young girl was really sweet, and took her time with me.

I ask everyone but Casey aided Are you receiving lot of calls today YES we are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It took longer to type this post than it did to make the calls.

YES:) RENEE` We have been given a VOICE and Yes!! It is HEVVIN SENT:)

CJ...I called Harkin's office, got a male phone screener....wanted to know where I was calling from??? I almost wanted to say, "Badges? What Badges? I don't got to show you no STINKIN' Badges"....but I simply said, "California":) He went on to say he didn't know where the Senator is on this bill, but he'd pass my requests along....I will say, he sounded a little less than 'enchanted' since I was calling from CA...I then called Chambliss' office, gave my regulation requests, i.e., please consider co-sponsoring, if cannot do that but would vote 'YES'...please send a letter to Sen. Landrieu letting her know, etc...

O.K...then I thought MORE about Harkin's office, picked the phone back up....CALLED..again:/ Got a young woman...asked the fax#? Sometimes they can be different...but it was correct on the Marching Orders..so, I said how I had tried a few minutes ago to fax something and got a 'report' from my machine indicating a 'no answer'...asked if it's ON??? "Yes, I think it's on."

Welllllll:) Two minutes later, FAMBLEE....guess WHAT??? I sent a stinkin fax to Harkin's office!!! Isn't it just 'amazing'???? :)

Alright Miss CJ CRAZY CAT LADEEEEEEE:) I just wanted you to know I've done my job for you and the HORSSSSESSSSSSS today:)

IS THERE SOME CONFUSION? I really hope that Renee is correct and that we have produced 1000 letters for Mr. Paul Sorvino, but I've just read the entire thread and as of yesterday there were ONLY ONE HUNDRED SEVEN LETTERS...well, Lucille will be back on later tonight and we can get an accurate count!

If is truly IS only 107 letters, I must say that this is one of the few times that I am ashamed of some of the people here - flame me if you will, but I personally sent the info about this project to my entire FOB list, and that list is far from complete so I know other people were hearing about this CRITCAL OPPORTUNITY from others. What's happening here?

Posted by: Nancy in CT at December 3, 2007 10:45 PM

No - we do not have 1000 letters!! That number was mentioned I think as a possible target...... I am sorry to say, as of late last night I don't think we had 100 yet? That number will be higher today I am sure. Lucille hasn't gotten home yet. I hope she is happily surprised. Keep them coming please.

Posted by: Mary S at December 3, 2007 10:57 PM

I am sorry, but I CANNOT believe that everyone has not taken advantage of this opportunity with Sorvino.

This is what we've been praying for, pleading for, asking for, imagining--knowing that only a celebrity face/name might push this legislation through. Can you imagine if we had several celebs on this? What courage it has taken for Sorvino to come forward...no one writes those lines for him, they come from the heart.

Lord, lord: it only takes five minutes to put your thoughts on paper and send it off to Lucille....
I agree with Nancy CT that there are only 100+ letters...1,000 is a number that fell out of the heavens (From our lips to God's ear....) Sigh.

HELP our horses;;;;I so hate to think we'll have to be at this for years....but with this kind of up-take on such an opportunity from people who KNOW BETTER??

Who is on the roll call? Where are the warriors?
We have to be better. We have to be better. The end of the year is near....please help.

## 107 as of 1130 pm last night. 79 from FOB.....

All - Daryl is enroute to Washington D.C. - plans to be there tomorrow afternoon - and appointments, with legislators, begins on Wednesday. He plans to stay - as long as they do ! His request: IF you would like him to set an appointment with a senator or hourse rep who has not yet co-sponsored S311 or HR503 ..... he will hound them for an appointment and their vote. Please email him with a name of anyone you've been working with, on or for .... !

I've made my calls and my faxes for today. Spoke to the aides in my local legislators' offices. Still getting no commitment whatsoever from Senator Murray's office.

I'm just really curious as to where we are going with all of this. When will there be enough co-sponsors? What will it take for the Senate to do something about the hold on this bill? Is the answer really more co-sponsors, or is it something else? Maybe there's no possible way to get this bill to a vote? I don't know. But I feel like I'm not getting enough concrete information.

I believe the Senate will soon be going home for the year. As you all know, my personal belief is that if the bill isn't addressed this year, it will not be addressed this session. As the days go by with no news, I am becoming more and more anxious. Is there any hope of it being addressed this year?

I don't have answers for you...I just think we MUST keep trying....Daryl Smoliak has said, the offices he speaks with tell him the number of calls are down...and reading here today of the lack of letters to Mr. Sorvino does, unfortunately, 'bring that home'...I don't know the answers...maybe peeples are becoming weary, feeling it's not doing any good...God knows, I have felt that way more than once or twice...but then I keep thinking of that next horse in the chute waiting to be NEXT....I won't ever allow myself to imagine what it has watched and heard before arrivng as that 'next' horse...and I just MUST keep going...

Roll call! Emailed my letter for Paul Sorvino earlier today...what an awesome opportunity we have. Please everyone, take advantage of it!!

On a lighter note, and hoping that many more will be motivated to write...this past weekend I was fortunate enough to visit Lexington, KY, for one of the most memorable weekends of my life. I will post more details on the forum with pictures in the next day or two. Just wanted to say that I was definitely in the presence of greatness! It was incredible to see so many champions up close and personal. Thanks to Shelley A., who was also there, a few of us FOB were able to have private visits at Three Chimneys and Darley. Smarty Jones, Dynaformer, Street Sense, Hard Spun, Discreet Cat, Bernardini, Holy Bull...not to mention so many others...just remarkable power, poise, beauty, personality shown by champions who definitely know "who they are."

We were able to visit John Henry's grave at Kentucky Horse Park (very moving), and see Cigar and Da Hoss as well as Kona Gold who had just arrived the day before. Breakfast at the Keeneland Track Kitchen was enjoyable (figure Alex was probably there many a time). Another highlight was attending the Thoroughbred Charities of America dinner/auction. It was gratifying to see so much money raised for their causes. We also were able to meet Nickname, the first horse Mr. Boxcar rescued(!), and Kelly and her daughter who so lovingly take care of her and other horses in need.

It was great to be with other FOBs, and it was fun, educational, thought provoking, and awe inspiring.

I definitely came back with a renewed love for racing, and a renewed interest in helping all those horses who are not as fortunate as these champions. As Shelley said, it is hard to reconcile what we saw with what is happening. It's a disconnect that just doesn't make sense. Even though the weekend was so wonderful, it will not measure up with how I will feel when we get these bills passed.

Please take 5 minutes and write a letter to Paul Sorvino!

Has it occurred to you all that the numbers on this site are down quite abit? That many folks who used to come here and help us are not coming here any more? I'm not surprised the numbers are down. There's been little or no evidence that the calls, faxes, letters, etc. have played any kind of role in moving the legislators in any direction. I've had three friends who used to work side by side with me, and now they don't any longer. There are many more, too.

Posted by: Elizabeth Thompson at December 4, 2007 12:35 AM

That is wonderful of Mr. Sorvino to help us and I sure hope we don't disappoint him by not providing enough letters. It's still not too late to write your letter so won't you write just a few lines for the horses. Their lives depend on it. Shirl in KY.

Elizabeth,

This group has been successful in gaining quite a few cosponsors that might have remained on the fence if it were not for the calls and faxes. There are MANY people who do not post but they do come here every day to check on the strategy and make their calls. Some through this board and many more through the Discussion Board.

Saying that we haven't made a difference is just not true. All it does is discourage those that work so hard. There are people that have been working on this for years and they have confirmed that we ARE making a difference.
I'm sorry your friends have chosen to give up but if everyone felt that way, nothing would ever change.

Posted by: ShelleyA at December 4, 2007 1:03 AM

Debbie... I talked to one of Casey's aides early this morning. He was actually a very nice young man (I swear they sound younger every time I call). I was determined to "chat him up" a bit this morning, but he was doing his best to stay focused... just when I thought all my good "phone voice" was going to waste, I actually got him to chuckle. We got to the part where he asked for my zip code... That would be 19348... you know, PA??? Daryl had mentioned that his office doesn't want to take calls from other states. So, I've emailed everyone I know in PA (well and every other state as well) and sent Casey's phone number to them all. I was passing out his number on flyers this morning and it led to a (somewhat) heated debate with someone. Will keep working on him especially as I make my calls.

####Lynne.... Hey there darlin'!!! I just love ya!! You (and yer stinkin faxes) are an inspiration.... BTW I'm still waiting for that "hey, how ya doin'" call!! ;)

### Mary, can we still send Lucille letters or has she finished getting everything together that she's going to send Mr Sorvino? By the time I got home, my little monkey refused to let me do anything other than spend time with him yesterday... and when he speaks, I listen!! I have it mostly done, but still needs tweaking.

### Martita, beautiful as always. Prayers for that beautiful horse that has captured your soul. Working on details on what we discussed.

### Sherry, congrats on Gunner... He is home. Bless you for all you have done and all you continue to do. Keep the file in the brownies recipe close... I may need it if we don't hear something from Casey's office!

### Daryl.... Kick some senatorial A@%!!!

I haven't posted much lately, but I am here. I roll call in spirit everyday... and I make my stinkin' calls!!! (homage to Lynne) Because of all of you! Because of Barbaro!
Thank you!

Elizabeth,

There are still many people working on getting this legislation passed that are just not posting on the main board as much but I can assure you they are here.

In regard to our calls/faxes/letters, etc not making a difference in gaining support from our legislators for the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, I couldn’t disagree with you more. In fact, The Fan’s of Barbaro are definitely being heard as well as being sought after by other animal advocacy organizations to lend our voices in support of their campaigns to help other animals in need.

We all know from time to time frustration sets in as we wait in anticipation for reward- but with all due respect, we are making a difference and we all have done quite a phenomenal job in gaining support for this bill. Now is not the time to neither quit nor become unmotivated. We have never been closer to saving America’s horses.

PLEASE SHARE YOUR RECIPES

ON A LIGHTER NOTE (temporarily)...the friends of Miracle Horse Rescue are producing a cookbook, with 60% of the proceeds from the sale of this cookbook will used for the care of the horses at MRH and 40% of the proceeds donated to the Laminitis Fund at New Bolton in honor of Barbaro...and what his legacy, through our efforts, has meant to so many rescued horses who might otherwise have ended up on foreign dinnerplates!

Please check out the thread and bombard me with recipes - thank you!

Strategy for Tuesday December 4

EVERYONE…. please follow the link below to the Paul Sorvino thread where we are collecting letters from FOBs asking Paul Sorvino to help us get horse slaughter out to the public via national television. Mr. Sorvino will be hand delivering all of our letters and other materials to production companies this week in hopes of getting some airtime on a major network to tell America the truth about horse slaughter.

Although Monday was the deadline for his meeting on Tuesday, there will be other meetings coming up. So, if you haven’t yet done so, please take a few minutes to write a letter. We will get a tally out to you as soon as it is available. Many thanks to Lucille who is working so hard on this project.

I'm going to post something I find to be absolutely beauuuuuuutiful, from our own Harriette Brillianthawk. I received it in my e-mail this afternoon late...I'm sorry I can't print the amazing horses depicted....

"HERE IN MY HEART"

The Gift of Love

Open your heart and receive
the love that your soul remembers
It has always been there waiting for you
Like a blossom you will open to the
warm rays of self-acceptance,
And you will learn to nurture
your own growth.

If we could love ourselves as we love
animals, unconditionally, we could
truly embrace the potential of what is
in our hearts. When life challenges us
it is this core that will sustain us.
When we remain true to ourselves, as
we would to someone we love, we will
realize the steadfast knowing that love
conquers all.

We have the opportunity to look at
each day with eyes of love; to see our-
selves and others with the compassion
that comes from this inner strength.
Horses offer us that sort of
compassion, when they reflect our
care and nuturing. We can see it in
their eyes, and feel it in our hearts.

As of now, there have been 177 letters received!!

REQUEST FROM LUCILLE....It would be very helpful if letters could be sent in PDF format or Microsoft word. If you have Vista, she cannot open your attachments so please send the letter as an email

Thanks to everyone who has written letters and a HUGE thanks to Lucille who has undertaken this project!!! With all the hard work she is putting into this, one letter from each of us is very little to ask!!

Posted by: ShelleyA at December 4, 2007 2:20 AM

FYI, if you have VISTA, you can opt to save the doc as whatever is needed.

Alex,

How do I post something to swedishkat on her wiki page? Do I just choose edit and then type in my question? I saw from the link that she and I both sponsor Take A Chance through the Exceller Fund.
