Barbaro Updates: 447

updates are now here.

Update 2803: Adena Springs (Stronach) is a major breeder in the thoroughbred industry. They also have a retirement program, here is their web-site: Adena Springs Retirement Program..

Update 2802: This appears to be a positive step in Pennsylvania: Pennsylvania Approves Steroids Ban.

Update 2801: Lovely east Texas weather we are having. A crisp start to the day but it warmed up quickly and I imagine will reach 70 degrees. We had ten sets today, six went out before the break and four after the break. A longer morning's work, but still finished by 10:30 am so no complaints. Six of the sets went to the gate, today we just stood them all in and backed them out. I had one who was a little tricky, he had been before, but we spent a little longer with him and he settled down in the end. Sometimes horses are not great around the gate and he may just be one of those. Its also interesting to see how the different gate crews work around the country and then compare them to the Fair Hill gate crew (which compare pretty favourably I think). Anyway, a very pleasant morning's work that also included plenty of football banter as we gear up for the big NFC clash tomorrow (around here you would have no idea Houston had a team!)

Update 2800: As part of the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong racing activities there is a jockey's challenge on December 5, Richard Migliore will represent the US. Sue McMullen sent this release:

Top jockey Richard Migliore will represent the United States in the Cathay Pacific International Jockeys' Championship 2007 at Happy Valley on Wednesday 5 December.

The Eclipse Award winner has been among the leading American riders since first breaking through in the 1980s. New York-born Migliore, 43, rode his 4,000th career winner in 2005 and his major wins in 2007 include the Gr.1 Frank E Kilroe Mile Handicap and Gr.1 Pacific Classic.

Migliore's participation was sought by Mr William A Nader, the Club's Executive Director of Racing, and the response was instant.

"I have been friends with Bill for a long time and when he raised the opportunity, I knew that this was an adventure that I could not miss. I am really looking forward to riding in Hong Kong," Milgiore said.

Mr Nader added: "Richard is ranked among the top 15 American jockeys in lifetime earnings and has enjoyed almost all of his success in New York and, now, Southern California, where racing is conducted in the most competitive of environments. He is a great addition to a sensational line-up of many of the world's best jockeys."

Migliore, whose minimum riding weight is 118lbs, joins an all-star cast that includes former champions Olivier Peslier, Andrasch Starke, Douglas Whyte, Damien Oliver and Christophe Soumillon. Also present are Sunday's Japan Cup winner Yasunari Iwata, six-time UAE champion Ted Durcan, four-time Irish champion Pat Smullen, former British champion Ryan Moore and Eclipse Award winning female rider Emma-Jayne Wilson, the champion jockey at Woodbine last year.

The last vacant slot in the Cathay Pacific International Jockeys' Championship will be filled by the leading local rider at the end of the Saturday, 1 December meeting.

Keep calling.

Hiya, FsOB

#### To Jennie in KY: It makes me sooo crazy, too, that neither of KY's Senators have co-sponsored S 311. I know all of our FsOB in the Bluegrass State are keeping the pressure on. ####

David K,

Since I am a die hard Cowboys fan (I even had season tickets in 1989 when they were 1-15), I really enjoyed your post last night comparing Tony Romo's success with Barbaro's success!

Alex, I love ya, but I have to part with you on this game. Go Cowboys!!

Run with the wind forever Barbaro.

Good Wednesday Morning FOBs

Robyn, the situation in Florida is actually worse than Kentucky. Here we have 2 Senators who both co-sponsored last year and won't co-sponsor this year. Every now and then the aides offer stupid excuses when questioned, but there must be something going on that we don't know about. It's very upsetting especially knowing that Barbi our leader and our calling group are very diligent and hard working. Although frustrated, we won't give up - ever.

Have a wonderful day all!!

MORNING POST SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI

Strategy for Wednesday November 28

Inside Edition did an excellent job of educating the public about the horror of horse slaughter. We must jump on this opportunity and make sure our legislators see this story. It is also a good time to send it to all CBS networks and see if we can get any of them to pick up the story. Details on how to do this will be posted on the Discussion Board under thread called MEDIA BLITZ.

We must still call the people we’ve been asked to target because they will make the difference in whether we have enough support to pass the bill. Letters of support from senators who would rather not cosponsor but will vote for our legislation, have been requested. They should be sent to Senator Landrieu’s office.

Remember….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico.

Another Approach
When one approach is not working to reach the desired goal, that's not a reason to abandon the goal. Instead, it is time to devise another approach. Sometimes the objective and the means to that objective become so intertwined that it is difficult to imagine one without the other. Yet there are many different ways to reach any particular goal, given enough persistence and creativity.

That's why, for those who are able to consistently get things done, there is no such thing as failure. There are only approaches which have been proven ineffective.

There is a way to achieve whatever you desire, even when you've already fallen short of the mark. There is a way to do it. That way may not be obvious. It may well require some skillful, creative thinking. It's there, though. Learn from each attempt, learn from each approach and you'll surely discover one that works spectacularly

Sherry

Joe is asking for help! Mist in the Dark is out of Danzig son of Northern Dancer and granddaughter of Alydar!

Wednesday, November 28th... Been around forever. I once potty trained a dinosaur. And I have never seen so many horses in trouble. If you can help, give me a call at 530-383-2120. I am asking you to phone instead of e-mail. Much quicker this way. Here we go:

A family not very far away needs to find homes for their 3 quarter horses. Cathy and I delivered grain and hay to them over the weekend, as they have no money for feed.

A thoroughbred filly in Sacramento is too hot for her owner. She is a beautiful mover, and needs a new home fast.

A half arabian mare in Sacramento is too hot for her owner. She needs a new home fast.

Feed lots are bursting. 2 cattle trailers to slaughter last week, and there will be at least 2 more this week. If you would like to rescue a horse from a feed lot, give me a call. They are usually priced by the pound, though not always.

The blackmail phone calls. Take my horse or my horse will die. Here we go:

7 older thoroughbred mares and geldings, all at different locations in Northern California.

2 paint mares, and both are broke to ride.

4 quarter horses, and they are at different locations in Northern California.

Mixtures of this and that, a total of 16 if I am counting correctly, and they are at different locations in Northern California. Several of these 16 are senior citizens. They would make wonderful companion horses.

In most cases you will not be getting Seattle Slew. Many of the above horses are skinny. After years of neglect they need dental and feet work. There is no such thing as a free horse. These horses will cost you money to maintain and money to bring back to good health.

But you should see the before and after pictures from many of our readers. And our readers all say the same thing. There is no better feeling in the world.

If you decide to open your arms to a needy horse, tbfriends will help with transportation. We will help with encouragement. We will help anyway we can.

Who knows what the answer is? I was told over and over that if slaughter stops in America, there would soon be thousands of unwanted horses who slowly starve. Thousands of horses with no where to go.

On the phone horse killer Manny Phelps laughs at me. Calls me a pair of panties. Been called lots of not very nice things in my life, but never a pair of panties.

There was a thoroughbred gelding with a racing tattoo, and he was 9 years old. The gelding was dark bay with a white face. White legs. He came right up to me at the feed lot in Elk Grove and said please take me home. I told the gelding do not worry, I will get you out of here. Horse killer Manny Phelps said $600.00. I gave him cash. I told horse killer Manny Phelps that my driver Gary Duncan was gone for Thanksgiving, but we could pick up the gelding on Tuesday. Horse killer Manny Phelps said okay.

Yesterday was Tuesday. The dark bay gelding with the white face and white legs was no longer there. Horse killer Manny Phelps forgot. Over the long weekend the gelding was loaded onto a cattle trailer and taken away to slaughter.

And on the phone I blasted him. It takes a lot for those kinds of words to come out of my mouth. I blasted him. And horse killer Manny Phelps only laughed, and called me a pair of panties.

My $600.00 will be credited to another horse.

My good friend Holly Meeks saw an ad on the internet for a free donkey. The donkey was not far from her apartment. Holly Meeks went to look on Sunday, and horse killer Manny Phelps was already there. Loading the poor donkey onto his trailer.

Holly Meeks, the nicest sweetest girl on earth. Never says a bad word about anyone. But on Sunday Holly Meeks called horse killer Manny Phelps a f****** a******. And horse killer Manny Phelps only laughed.

Holly Meeks asked how much, and horse killer Manny Phelps said $300.00. The donkey was saved, and is now with a mutual friend in Elverta. In less than 2 minutes horse killer Manny Phelps profited $300.00. He is really beginning to annoy me.

And so I think about kids. Hanna Draper. Cora Mason. Brianna McDonald. Katie Malone. Becky Coombs. Mikka Thorson. Jenny Hartman. Ryan Miller. Josh Anderson. Allison Martino. Literally hundreds of kids who love horses. Who love animals. Who would never be a Manny Phelps.

It is the kids, the horses, and all the possibilities.

Takes the sting away from having to deal with horse killer Manny Phelps all the time.

Enjoy your Wednesday, and always remember to hug your horses.

Joe

A new filly from the race track yesterday, and she is below on the left. Her name is Mist In The Dark, and she is 4 years old. A very nice mover, and she seems to be sound. Which is rare for us.

A mare who was in serious trouble, and she came to us from a rodeo. Her picture is below on the right, and we named her Melody.

I AM FURIOUS ....... that scum like these kb's not only live .... but are getting rich off of our beloved horses !

Located in Northern California, TB Friends is dedicated to the rescue and placement of horses that have been abandoned or neglected. Usually these horses arrive from the race track. The horses obtained by TB Friends are often saved from the brutal trip to rendering facilities in Texas.

When possible TB Friends takes care to select horses well suited to make the transformation to riding mount or show horse. Our proximity to the bay area race tracks, along with the throwaway nature of the racing industry, unfortunately results in a situation where there are many horses in need of rescue, and therefore many horses from which to choose.

At TB Friends we manage to rescue about two hundred horses every year. When we place a horse there is no charge for the care that we provide them here at Shelton Farms. We only ask for the cost of a horse's rescue and transportation to the farm. For most horses this amounts to less than $1000 dollars.

Sadly, we can not save them all. We are limited by the number of horses that we can care for at any one time. However, as we find homes for the horses we have rescued, we replace them by rescuing others. For this reason we ask you to consider purchasing a horse from our farm. Not only are you likely to obtain a beautiful animal, but you will also help us to save more horses.

You can call me on my cell at 530-383-2120. If I do not answer it means I am probably busy with a horse. Or on the couch with a rerun of Malcolm In The Middle. Just leave a message and I will call you back soon.

After reading Joe's blog...what a wake up call...and how dare that killer buyer?

Money is the root of evil...but sad to say that is what it is going to take to place the horses in beautiful loving homes and rescues.

Horses on the Hill
I don’t mind what Congress does, as long as they don’t do it in the streets and frighten the horses.
Victor Hugo

Well, we mind what Congress does, especially when it comes to horses, hence our forming of the Horse on the Hill Gang.

Did you know that horses are featured in the fresco painted by Constantino Brumidi in the Interior Dome of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.? Click on the thumbnail to enlarge. How many are there, and can you spot them?

I too am hooked on Joes Blog and the story of the bay gelding with the white faces has me in tears and is tragic because I can see him pleading with Joe to save him. Please forgive me famblee and God but I hope that f***ing Manny Phelps rots in Hell. (Sorry) I look into the eyes of saved horses at MHR. I look into Cloud's eyes and they are so grateful and so happy. Cloud is just a great big puppy dog. How many Clouds have we lost or are losing?

Debbie L.A. - Kat is a little 8-year-old girl with Down's Syndrome and leukemia. Last night I heard from her Dad - Kat may have pneumonia. Windy bonded with her in October - bonded big time and I take his guidance very seriously when it comes to healing sessions with other people. He was sending his healing energy to her at full strength and I had to guide it so she could work with the intensity of it. Later she told her father she called Windy a unicorn. If anybody can understand where I come from, its this famblee. There are other things I can't discuss publicly, but Kat has a sweetness and strength about her and an agelessness in her eyes. She reminds me of Barbaro and his energy and trust of loved ones. Her family is very spiritual, very loving and right now their faith is being tested. Have not heard if they want me to come to the hospital and I don't want to intrude so I do what I do behind the scenes. All I can do is send Reiki for the highest good.

Her 9th birthday is December 8th and I have been invited to the party. I wouldn't miss it for the world. I just wish I could bring Windy with me...

A breakthrough in laminitis research by a team of scientists at University of Queensland, Australia, and colleagues, was published in August 2007 The Veterinary Journal. The study explains an important link in sugar and starches as causes for laminitis.

Laminitis was induced in healthy, lean, young ponies by prolonged (up to 72 hours) administration of insulin via euglycemic clamp. This procedure maintains blood glucose at a set level, eliminating involvement of glucose toxicity. Prior to the study, all ponies’ insulin levels were in normal range. In addition to clinical observation of lameness, examination of hoof tissues after euthanasia confirmed laminitis in all four feet. There was no evidence of gastrointestinal involvement.

While insulin resistance has long been associated with laminitis, researchers have only speculated as to the causative agent. Some have suggested that inflammatory substances released as a consequence of obesity were to blame. This new research points the finger at the toxic aspects of insulin, although the mechanism by which it causes laminitis is still not understood. The subject ponies were not obese. While obesity is sometimes (but not always) a consequence of insulin resistance, this study shows it is not necessary to trigger laminitis.

This study puts new importance on the role of sugar and starch as the cause of laminitis. These are the carbohydrates that induce a glycemic response that includes release of insulin. Much of the data being used to justify the fructan theory of laminitis are actually water soluble carbohydrates, which include sugar and fructan in cool season grasses.

This study now explains why horses get laminitis from eating warm season grasses such as Bermuda, or legumes such as clover, that don’t have fructan. Sugar concentration increases in both warm and cool season grasses under stress, such as cold, drought, or low nutrient supply. This stress triggers the formation of storage carbohydrates to be used later after conditions for better growth resume. In cool season grasses, the storage form of carbohydrate is fructan, and in warm season grasses it is starch. When fructan concentration in grass is high, sugars are nearly always fairly high as well. To read the rest of the article click on the link

This must be the week we are all getting frustrated. The other day I felt like picking up a building and throwing it across the road. I am calmer today.

Since most of the horse owning community must know about Mexican 'techniques' by now, how come these owners are still taking their horses to sales, knowing the horses are at great risk for a brutal end? This is what I CANNOT wrap my head around. And this is what makes me very, very, ashamed of my fellow Americans. The world is watching.

Posted by: Margie at November 28, 2007 4:40 PM

### Margie- let me tell you what horse owners arent thinking. Right now hay and grain prices are SO High. Hay is non-existent in MO. It has to be shipped in. They cant feed them! And sometimes it doesnt have anything to do with desire-it has to do with the lack of supply. Hay fields are being tilled up to put in corn because of the high price of corn. They just take them to sales because there is no other alternative, and I think they just leave them there with the attitude that what they dont know wont hurt them. They dont know where they are sold to, so lack of knowledge always give them the sense that the horse is OK. Jen

Posted by: jen at November 28, 2007 4:47 PM

#####
I agree with you Jen....100 percent.....Lack of knowledge is so harmful....
Thinking that the horse will be okay and not following through what is right....(alot of the owners do not do)
And...ethanol is killing everyone because instead of growing hay....corn is the crop that is bringing in the money....
MONEY..MONEY...GREED....GREED....AND LACK OF KNOWLEDGE...

Still waiting to access the HAHS extra target list for today. Meanwhile - suggest you work on the Media Blitz, the ABR National Strategy list for today, and the instructions of your State Group Leader (and if you're not in one, PLEASE contact Stephanie, sbreaux1@verizon.net ASAP).

My input re Media Blitz - strictly IMO, btw

I'm extremely unhappy with the quote from the vet at New Holland, quoted by Inside Edition and IN THE PRINT VERSION, that HS is "a necessary evil." Suggest we include link to Vets for Equine Welfare (VEW) site

www.vetsforequinewelfare.org

and VEW PR dated 10/9

http://www.vetsforequinewelfare.org/avma_stop.php

along with the IE link when we do the Media Blitz.

That's what I am doing. I do NOT want to send the IE piece out to media "as is" without detracting from that "necessary evil" crapola. IMO the VEW link does the trick. Contrary opinion FROM OTHER VETS. I think this is VERY IMPORTANT.

SPREAD THE WARMTH Project

Crossposting Sharon's from the DB [excerpts below]

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=17185.1

As many of you are aware, I started what is called the "Spreading the Warmth Project". This is a blanket drive for our rescued horses.

Kate is my right hand with this project and we are in need of some information in order to make sure all our rescued horses who need blankets, will be blanketed.

I have collected many blankets (people blankets) from generous FOB's who want to help keep our babies warm this winter. I asked those who sent the blanket to include a message to the horses that I will write on each blanket after it is cut, sort of always being with the horse you are keeping warm. These (people blankets) will be used for the lining of horse blankets.

We have 3 industrial machines and sewers in Kentucky, I am one sewer here in New Jersey, and I have sewers lined up in Florida, New Mexico and a few other states.

We are contacting sources in hopes to gain some already made horse blankets for the horses so needy right now of staying warm.

We have two target dates, Christmas and Valentine's Day. These blankets we are sewing will be distributed to the rescues who are in need.

I need to hear from all rescues who need blankets, whether sheets, blankets, whatever so we can get a good amount to target.

Anyone wishing the help sew, donate a used people blankets, please email me and help Spread the Warmth to our babies.

We have a few things going on that we hope will help this project, either myself or Kate will let you know on this thread.

Thank you all who have donated, I am cutting all the blankets out, most are going to Kentucky to the industrial machines.

Sharon [end of crosspost]

Note that she needs PEOPLE blankets for lining; also needs to hear from RESCUES in need of horseblankets. And - your personal message to the horses will be included in the blankets sent to the Rescues.

I need knowledge, if there is a shortage of hay, what do the horses eat. Now I am worried.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at November 28, 2007 5:17 PM

Renee- when there is a shortage of hay- owners can go to complete feeds or buy alfalfa cubes or pellets. that also is expensive and a lot of people dont know about it. It poses a problem as far as colic goes when horses dont get enough roughage. You just cant feed them just grain. the problem is not knowing enough as an owner and not asking or just flat out not caring.

## Margie- its hard to be understanding. I have lots of horse friends that know about the hazards of going to a sale- but there are SO MANY who dont know what happens. that is either by choice or by just being Naive. (dont know if that is spelled right) Get mad at the ones that dont care. Educate the ones who dont know. Jen

Sherry - like Jessica Rabbit - "It's how I'm drawn . . ." Thanks.

I've been "pushing" that VEW info for a while now with the legislators as well. I believe that the non-cosponsors and non-committed-to-vote-yes ones, at least some of them, are holding out because of misgivings due to the position of those 2 national Vet organizations.

Time for a little breather? This is indeed really cool - crossposting from Wendy at the DB

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=17282.1

Recently, in Paris, the 4 major schools of horsemanship got together and did a show. For the first time, the Lisbon (Lusitanos), Jerez (Andalusians), Vienna (Lippizaners) and France's Cadre Noir performed together and demonstrated their interpretation of the high school of equestrian art.

Personally, I don't see what the big deal is! My horse Toby can throw a buck better than any of them and we have a young quarter horse that walks on her hind legs all the time. ;)

Seriously, it is cool to watch!

jen,
Thank you for the info. I really want to own a horse. I want to sponsor one first to make sure...like I really have a doubt. They are majestic creatures.

I have another question if anyone can answer it, you tend to see pictures of horses eyes alot. Is there a factual meaning, or is it just knowing once you expierence it? I love to look at them and them at me. It seems to be a silent communication. The feeling is so deep and incredible.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at November 28, 2007 5:51 PM

Renee- when you get around horses, their eyes are truly windows to their souls. The eye of a horse tells you so much about their personality. One thing you will hear a horseman say when they describe a good horse is.... and they had a real soft intelligent eye. Look at the photos of Barbaro...what do you see in those eyes? Jen

New Hampshire residents - and everyone:
When I visited with Senator Sununu's ag aide during my recent DC trip he told me there were very few calls in support of S. 311, even less against. However, the senator does hear from farmers during meetings expressing concerns about transportation should a horse slaughter ban be enacted. This senator has not made up his mind yet. Therefore, we must ramp up our efforts in calls, faxes and e-mails to this office. All calls count, but N.H. calls carry more weight. N.H. residents, please get everyone you can on board here.

Senator John Sununu - 202-224-2841

The senators return to DC next week. While they are there we have to make sure they hear our voice! Let's step up, all of us!

I soooo agree with you. This is what the general public needs to learn. Removing slaughter limits their options. Eventually they will "get" that they have to quit breeding quantity. Eventually, quality breeding will bring the market back. There is no demand and the supply is way to high.

Cathy- they are slowly learning the hard way. The hard way though is for all of these horses who dont have homes or food to eat. My friend who has 3 or 4 mares told me last year that she wasnt breeding them anymore, no market. She just told me that they are all in foal again. they thought they were going to sell their stallion so they bred them all anyway. Cant get 50 dollars for them. I could have killed her. That is an example of stupidity. Jen

Posted by: jen at November 28, 2007 7:38 PM

Feel so bad for Joe losing the gelding who was pleading with him to save him. You cant talk to a killer buyer because they do not have souls. I dont understand the people who sell to the killer buyers. If I had a horse I couldnt feed or take care of before I would give or sell it to be slain I would beg, borrow or maybe steal enough money to have the vet put it down peacefully. ###Had lunch with a long time friend and she asked me what I was going to do this afternoon and I told her I was going to call senators. I explained the situation and the torture the horses go through and she said "that is bad-I am going to go shopping today". These people just drive me crazy. guess why I prefer Chiefs company. ###speaking of chief I am about to turn the furnace on and see how the trats work. I have to hold the lamps and end tables up as he tried to hide. Gad!

###really in a bad mood today. I think of our beautiful horses in Mexico and want to cry.

Ever since I found out what is done to our beautiful american breed horses, I found out here. I have shed many tears over them and what they must go through for nothing but greed. It hurts me to the core and just breaks my heart. I wish I could rescue all of them and keep them safe and sound and loved like never before.
I go to the rescue I am involved with and just love them so, treats kisses hugs. My big boy Maxx was swinging his head as I brushed him when he did that I kept kissing his nose, I got a look from him like I do like this extra tid bit from my new friend.

FINALLY!

Extra Weds. 11/28 National Target List (HAHS)

PREFACE/Heads-Up

per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Senators who may support (plan to vote for) S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Senator Mary Landrieu, sponsor and promoter of the Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all your calls.

IMO - convey the website www.vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - ask them to look at Press Release dated 10/9. Tell them to look for a copy of PR dated 10/9 that should have arrived at their offices recently. (Click on NEWS at their homepage.)

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-459-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy - INCLUDING TODAY's MEDIA BLITZ - and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE NEW SUGGESTION/CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE Prior HS History above the LIST OF SENATORS below.)

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?

Here is today's (Wednesday 11/28) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311 to the Senators; ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the current/new ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind.

The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:

"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who in not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

PRIOR HS HISTORY: All the Senators from the top part of the list voted for the Ensign-Byrd Agriculture Appropriations Amendment in 2005 but have not yet cosponsored the bill this year.

Famblee

Y'all know that I am a tad bit attached to Miracle Horse Rescue. I just viewed Mary's video and it is a 10. It's more than a 10. I fell in love with Misty the day I met her. She is kind and patient. I guess you'd have to be if you were a baby machine like she was. She's pretty much seen it all. Her son Spirit has his Mom's character. Check out the video and bring the kleenex box. I can see Barbaro in hevvin, his chest puffed out, so proud of his Legacy.

PENNSYLVANIA RESIDENTS - and of course all FsOB:
During my recent DC trip I met with Senator Robert Casey's ag aide. He said the senator's position at that time was to wait and see how the bill would progress. I posted before many senators take that position on many bills. I just spoke with the aide and he said they are still discussing S. 311. However, he knows Senator Specter, who is a co-sponsor on S. 311, has been conversing with Senator Casey about a number of things, and S. 311 is probably one of them. With Senator Specter as a co-sponsor, and hopefully working to get Senator Casey on board, now is the time for us to really get those calls, e-mails & faxes to Senator Casey's office.

This office, consistent in reporting with all the other offices, has said the call volume for support of S. 311 is down.

There is a strong possibility of getting support here. Pa. residents, unite! You have the opportunity before you to get this done. All FsOB, let's help them! Calls, faxes and e-mails!

I'm meeting with the aide when I return to DC. I have requested the senator and Chief Of Staff attend. These meetings are easier to procure with support for a bill.

To all but especially Joe and Debbie....

I just read Joe's email and had two thoughts. One is that Joe paid for the TB gelding, so it was his, and when the previous owner sold it the second time to a Killer/Murderer he was selling someone elses "property". Isn't that theft? Can't Joe call the police and recover his "property" and have the Killer arrested?

Also, when a racehorse has a tattoo can't he be traced to his original owner/breeder. I personally feel that if you breed or try to race a horse, you owe that horse a decent life.....If we can tie individual horses in feed lots or who are sold to Killers to their original breeders/owners, can't the original breeder/owner's names be published? Wouldn't that embarrass them. Since they have appear to have no consciences perhaps they would react to being "outed" to their peers and become social outcasts among decent people. Maybe embarrassment would do what their consciences fail to do.

cathy,
I love it, It is rewarding to see what rescue can do and how beautiful these horses are when their pride and self worth is restored through good love and care. I feel what you are saying, there is a definite reason. It is good!

God Bless Steph and all involved, If I lived there I would be there to help also. Give Cloud a big kiss from CT.

Daryl, Sherry and anyone else who can answer....

When making calls to the Senate, besides asking for co-sponsorship and support for S311, what else should we be asking? Personally when I call Casey's office (as well as others), it just doesn't feel very effective. Is it all a matter of tally? Or are there other things I should be mentioning? I know the push is on this week, so any help you can give me/us to be more effective would be greatly appreciated.

As always thank you all for all of your hard work.

I feel really bad for Joe at TB friends.

Also, like with puppies and kittens, people have got to stop breeding mares and be responsible.

So many people out there have no business doing what they do with animals (as in breeding them). It really makes me angry.

Joe is a saint. He deals with a kill buyer who calls him names, sends the horse JOE PAID for to slaughter, is an illegal alien, pays no taxes and also breaks California laws. Joe deals with him and puts up with the frustration and heartache all to save horses!!! It takes a very special person to live this way.

Hi again

How do we find out who bred, raced and disgarded these poor abandoned slaughter bound horses?

I really think publishing their names in LARGE PRINT would do a great deal. Hopefully they would be ostracized by decent people in the industry. If they were emmbarrassed sufficiently they might even develop consciences(or at least behave as though they had.)

Posted by: Eileen at November 28, 2007 10:16 PM

####Hi Rach:
Yes, the calls do count, and the calls from Pa. residents carry a lot of weight. So a call is important as they are tallied and presented, in numbers, to the senator. Cannot put enough emphasis on this. I understand that many callers feel that "just a call" is not enough. Not true! I have been told by four people in Casey's office the calls carry weight.

A couple things to say. First, tell whoever answers the phone that Senator Specter is a co-sponsor of S. 311 and you urge Senator Casey to do so as well.
Second, say there is momentum for S. 311 and you want to know if there is anything Pa. residents can do to assist the senator in his decision making process.

I've asked my Dc contacts how long the senators will remain in DC because last week the answer to that was anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks. The latest is they will be in sessions for at least 2 weeks and possibly stay until close to Christmas. So it's critical to get those calls, e-mails and faxes to these offices during this time. Again, the calls are critical.

Daryl

Posted by: Daryl Smoliak at November 28, 2007 10:27 PM

Thanks Daryl!! I will mention Senator Specter when I call tomorrow, and ask what else we can do. Also, I made post cards with Casey's phone number and what to ask for. I'm giving them to everyone at the shop and hoping I can recruit a few others to pass them out. Thanks again for your help.

Tell the little monkey the big monkey will await the package with a mouth-watering lack of patience.

And I sent you a card that should show up on your doorstep in the next day or two.

The postcard thingy is a great idea! So let's add to it! When I'm Kennett Square in a week and a half from now, let's tie a rope around my neck, I'll do the chimp thing as you hold the other end of the rope and I'll pass out the cards on a street corner. When the cops ask what the heck is going on, we'll tell them Sherry made us do it!

Hi guys...a question I hope someone can answer. Our call group is getting a booth after first of the year at a horse festival here in Arkansas. We've discussed getting buttons/flyers etc. We also would like to pass these out now. I'm hoping these bills get passed before then but if they do not...will the number on the bills (as in S311) change after first of the year? We needed to make some printing decisions so any help would be great...If it changes we will only print a few as needed til end of the year...however costwise we could obviously save the more we print. Thanks...Tamme

Posted by: Tamme at November 28, 2007 11:17 PM

####Rach:
I will wear the little hat and vest as well. And I will hold a little tin cup and ask for donations...which we will send to Joe at TB friends!
Ah, good question about trusting you with the rope..........hadn't thought about that.....yup, it's a little scary now that that I visualize the possibilities......but then, how will you explain to the little monkey that the big monkey has taken a trip to chimp heaven? Yeah, I think I'll let you hold the rope.

And yes, blaming it on Sherry works very well. How do you think I stayed out of jail in DC? LOL!

Okay, get everyone to make those calls. Let's get Senator Casey on board!

Daryl

Hi, Rach!!

sometimes it seems like it doesn't count, doesn't it. There are days when I think the aides are becoming so apathetic they can hardly stand it. When that happens, I TRY to get a laugh out of them. It isn't always easy, but it seems to kinda open the door. Your exchange with Daryl the Wonder Guy reminded me of a recent conversation with an aide, in which I asked "Do I hafta put one of those funny little hats on my head and stand outside your office with a cup in my hand that has little "SUPPORT S-311" tags in it and pass them out?" She said "OH NO don't worry, I'll tell the Senator" other times I'll start out saying "Can we talk about something and have a question and answer period before you say 'I'llseethathe/shegetsthemessagethankyouforcallinghaveaniceday'. What's really neat is when they start to recognize your voice :)

Keep believing that it matters because it does. We are gonna DO THIS THING!!

Love ya

CHERYL - I am always amazed when I call certain offices and I'm greeted with "Oh, this is Nancy from CT, isn't it?". I've been told I "give great phone" but one aide actually said "YOU should be answering the telephones around here!"

####Cheryl Jones:
Yup, humor is the shortest distance between two people. It can be a conduit to opening the door for a relationship. Those DC workers are surrounded by heavy duty issues, crabby and sometimes downright rude people that make their day miserable. We have to be different. Different, if done positively, correctly, is also a relationship builder. Inherently, people like to feel good. So being different in the vein of using a tool, such as humor, and making a person feel good, works to our advantage. I watched Martita the whole day when she visited me in DC. Wow! Everyone she came in touch with, well, they felt better when we left than we first met them. She made them feel good, feel important. What a lesson.
Make the people you talk to in DC remember you. Humor, kindness, thanking them. I tell many of them that "You are very professional and you represent your senator extremely well." We live in a world where compliments are in short supply, but the demand is great. Let's help the DC folk help us by acknowledging their efforts and giving them a thanks for everything they do.

Daryl

###Sounds to me like you cannot talk to the killer buyers unless you are bilingual because many of them don't "speekie Ingie." I realize everyone has to make a living and has mouths to feed--and not everyone "gets it" and doesn't feel the way we do about animals and their welfare or well-being. But there ARE limits. Fair is fair, right is right, a fee paid for ownership is a fee paid, and that's the end of the story.

Or it should be.

Breeders who take back animals they have brought into this world are called "responsible" in the Rottweiler world (and, I'm sure, in other breed parlance as well). I know a lady near me here in the Victor Valley who is breeding Lippett-style Morgans, with the HOPE that there is going to be a market for the foals. She has a stallion and probably a dozen mares that she has gotten for very little money--to start her breeding operation. To test her stallion's ability to get mares in foal, she bred several grade mares, too.

I want to SLAP that woman because she is clueless AND irresponsible. But I say nothing other than to remind her that there are people who will take these horses off her hands if she is truly desperate for "a market for them"--and their fee is based on "per pound."

She thinks I'm terrible.

The feeling is mutual.

She (and the situation) make me crazy.

Strategy for Thursday November 29

Those who voted in support of the Ensign-Byrd Amendment Senate (2005) but have not yet cosponsored the bills

Elizabeth Dole – NC Phone: 202-224-6342 Fax: 202-224-1100

Chuck Hagel – NE Phone: 202-224-4224 Fax: 202-224-5213

Norm Coleman – MN Phone: 202-224-5641 Fax: 202-224-1152

New to the Senate – No Record

Bob Corker – TN Phone: 202-224-3344 Fax: 202-228-0566 Aide: Ashley Homing

Special Daily Target

Please make sure to call both his office and Obama’s National Campaign Headquarters.

Daryl what was it last year, S1915? and this year is S 311! Can someone help Tamme, but I pray this bill will pass this year. Don't know what I did before Barbaro, I can't remember I think I had a life.
And yes the aides knows my name as soon as I say Hello how are you today, we talk about the weather in Alabama. It's cold in DC and they are missing home and the nicer weather. They all sound like babies to me. So young!

Hiya, FsOB! Doesn't Joe at TB Friends just renew your faith in humanity? I think that Eileen's suggestion re. whether law enforcement might have cause to be alerted (due to the dear 9 yr. old bay TB gelding being sold for slaughter AFTER Joe had paid for his rescue) is definitely in order. Joe's daily works are amazing, aren't they? I told Brent's mother about TBF when she was with us at Thanksgiving. Wishing each of you restful, well-deserved slumbers tonight. Peace, RMH

#### Dear Harriette, I am so sorry to read that one of your friends has passed. Please know that I hold you and your friend's family close in my thoughts.
To Sandra: I sure hope that poor Chief gets used to that new furnace soon! He sounds as high strung as my late Husky boy, Illya.
To Lyn Gilbert: Sending hopes for recovery to little Kat. It's very sad to read that a child is so very ill.
To Lynne B: I echo your sentiments. I hope that all is well for Kathy & Cooper in SC.
To Daryl S.: Your work is amazing! I hope that things warmed up in MN today. I could never handle that weather.
To Janice in FLA: It is exasperating, isn't it, that more Congression persons from FLA don't "get it"? There are so many horse farms in the Ocala region. Training race horses must be a boon to FLA's economy, you'd think that the elected public officials would want to protect horses.
To everyone who, like me, is a child at heart: "The Grinch" comes on ABC tonight at 8:30 PM EST. I'm heading upstairs now! ####

CBS networks and see if we can get any of them to pick up the story. Are we going to do this each day? Not that it takes much time but I have MEDIA BLITZ for two days in a row now. I don't like what the vet has to say. But if that is what you wish I am on it! And I didn't send it to the senators and congress for what the vet said! Slaughter is a necessary evil! That plays right to my senators and Jo Bonner.

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at November 29, 2007 1:24 AM

Tamme,

The bill number will not change next year. It stays the same for the full 2 year session that it is introduced in. Since this Congressional session started 1/1/07 and runs through 12/31/08, the bill stays the same for the full 2 years. If it is not passed by 12/31/08, it dies. It must be reintroduced during the next session of Congress starting 1/1/09.

Since the 109th Congress ended on 12/31/06 without the bill passing, it was reintroduced in the new session, so it got a new number. However, even in a new session, the bill number may stay the same as HR503 did in the House. It only changed in the Senate from S1915 to S311.

Clear as mud, Heh?!

You should be OK to print the flyers with the bill numbers S311 and HR503. Whew!!

Posted by: Patty in Dallas at November 29, 2007 1:24 AM

####Debbie L.A:
I e-mailed Tamme with clarification. Last year it was S. 1915 because that bill was in the 109th Congress. This is the 110th Congress which does not end until December 31, 2008. So the bill number stays the same until then. But, let's end this now! We need to get this legislation passed because our horses are being butchered everyday.
And I don't remember what I did before Barbaro. Vaguely remember something about grass, sticks a little ball.......hmmmmmmmm! LOL!

Jenny's on Radio ran 7th in a 35,000 claiming race today at Aqueduct. This is the 2nd race in a row where she looked like she had no interest in being there. Hate to see her keep dropping in the claiming ranks, hope her owners and trainer will listen to her.

Eileen - regarding publishing the names of breeders when their horse is in danger of going to the slaughter house. I presented this idea to one prominent breeder at Three Chimneys who is a friend of mine. It was the only thing in 5 years of discussing the breeders role in horse slaughter that ever got his attention. I followed the horses he bred more than he did and many ended up in low level claiming races where they were for sure in danger, no interest in their fate. Very sad.

Good idea for your state Tamme, maybe someone will know the answer regarding the bill numbers.

Heartbreaking story from Joe, what disgusting thugs the KB's are. I am sure he can't stop thinking about the horse he bought and is now on his way to slaughter.

Calls and faxes done today, great to see the letter from the "real" vets who honor their oath.

It was so good to read the We Believe!

Good night my family, tomorrow is a new fight, prayers for Joe who I am sure is thinking about the bay gelding with the white face and 4 white legs. What a haunting that must be for him. The poor gelding is almost to his slaughter date. And it makes me so mad and so sad. Maybe we can save the next one. Breeding I don't get it! sorry!

Good evening, fellow Fans!

Contacts made for the day so I can go to bed with a clear conscience, unlike that killer buyer that Joe deals with out there in California. It's a good thing I'm all the way on the other coast...

###
Daryl - Plenty of time for golf when we're through with Barbaro's work!

Harriette - You are in my prayers. It's so sad to learn of a friend's passing long after the fact.

Proud Fan of Barbaro forever

Barb....I bet the guy at Three Chimneys who did not show any interest in the horses he bred who were at low level claiming races would be real unhappy if his name was published.....People must take responsibility for those they bring into this world..... I really think only public shame will wake some people up.

Also is it too late to find the TB that Joe bought and which was then resold? I wish he could be saved. It really upsets me.

Also I agree Joe is an angel.

Padme,

Kat and her family feel you "with" them...I have no doubt. And you know Kat feels Windy as well.

I will also say a prayer for Kat and her family tonight, asking for comfort, blessings and improved health for Kat, strength and rest for her family...and rest and blessings for you...ALL wrapped in love. xxoo

Kathy S.,

Just to let you know, Bart is living well!

It's a little chilly in the office in the mornings now and do you know where you'll find Bart?!...Laying in front of my space heater!

And, when it's sunny, he kicks my paper-work sitting on the window ledge to the desk and plants himself in the sunlight!

And Kathy, he still stops in his tracks for his Kathy pats! Just wanted you to know!!

Good night frens. May you have sweet dreams of a bay blur with a hint of lingering spearmint scent...and apple cores galore! xxoo

You know what....if that Horse Killer is here illegally and not paying taxes maybe someone knows someone who works for the Border Patrol or Internal Revenue or whatever and he can be deported or jailed.

I think we have to really go after these no goods with whatever power we can legally muster.

Just a thought.

Debbie LA

The great piece IE did far outweighs the comment by the vet. Even though he called it a necessary evil, he still had to use the word "evil". I don't believe his comment affected the hard hitting report they did. It's very enlightening to those who are unaware that slaughter exists. Disturbing but enlightening!!
