    Barbaro Updates: 441

    updates are now here.

Update 2774: The Green Monkey was fourth in his third race, and first effort on the turf this afternoon.

Update 2773: As a news "junky" I am getting a little tired of the political races we are witnessing, that being said I was very pleasantly surprised to see this on John Edward's blog: Slaughter of an American Icon.

Update 2772: Another warm morning at Sam Houston Downs, I think there is rain in the forecast but it held off during training hours. We had nine sets again today, six went out before the break, three after the break. The final six sets all went to the gate, just to stand the horses and back them out. Make sure they are nice and quiet in the gate (quiet and relaxed horses break much better than nervous horses). All mine stood nicely. All in all a decent morning's work. One slight close call when someone was coming galloping right at me after his pony rider cut him loose, but we were missed!

Update 2771: European Horse of the Year Dylan Thomas is now out of the Japan Cup, he may still run in Hong Kong before his retirement: Dylan Thomas Out of Japan Cup.

The most expensive horse to sell at an auction, The Green Monkey, is making his third start this afternoon and first start on the turf: The Green Monkey Tries Turf.

    Keep calling.

    FOBs,

Our beautiful Barbaro gives us all the strength to go out & fight the good fight and save the lives of horses that have the right to be here.

You all amaze me with your creativity, dedication & perserverance! I am giving EXTRA thanks for all of you this week!! I am sure Bobby, Foggy, Pine Island, Fitch & George Washington (to name only a few) are looking down from that glorious Rainbow Bridge cheering on our efforts to make this a better world for many other horses.

All are in my prayers, & I am saying an extra, special prayer for the wonderful ladies from Pure Thoughts Horse & Foal Rescue & A Stand 4 The Horses that are tirelessly working to bring horses home for the holidays!! And to Alex who is wise and patient beyond expectations, and provides this great community that we all can share.

What a privaledge it is to be amongst such stand up people. I am so proud to be a FOB!!

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Good Wednesday morning FOBs and Happy Thanksgiving Eve. As said by others - I am very thankful for all of you and to be a part of Barbaro's famblee.

re: horse slaughter issues - we do have things to be thankful for. The Texas and Illinois slaughterhouses are closed. But as long as the Mexicans and Canadians are still slaughtering and we don't have the federal legislation to prevent our horses being shipped there, we can't rest. Congress MUST pass the much needed legislation and we MUST convince them that the time is NOW.

Have a wonderful day everyone and my prayers for all in need.

Pre-Thanksgiving skritches to the BBH (and 2007 Triple Halo winner) Sir JH, Gorgeous George, and all of their wonderful frens in Equine Heaven..

    And for us, down below:

    MORNING POST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI

    Strategy for Wednesday November 21

While everyone is very excited to hear the S311 has been put on the calendar, it is also important to remember that this is only procedural. It does not change any of our strategy yet. We must still call the people we’ve been asked to target because they will make the difference in whether we have enough support to pass the bill. Letters of support from senators who would rather not cosponsor but will vote for our legislation, have been requested. They should be sent to Senator Landrieu’s office.

Remember….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico.

Those who voted in support of the Ensign-Byrd Amendment Senate (2005) but have not yet cosponsored the bills

Elizabeth Dole – NC Phone: 202-224-6342 Fax: 202-224-1100

Chuck Hagel – NE Phone: 202-224-4224 Fax: 202-224-5213

Harry Reid - NV Phone: 202-224-3542 Fax: 202-224-7327

    Richard G. Lugar - IN Phone: 202-224-4814 Fax: 202-228-0360

David Vitter – LA Phone: 202-224-4623 Fax: 202-228-5061 Aide: Chris Stanley

Norm Coleman – MN Phone: 202-224-5641 Fax: 202-224-1152

New to the Senate – No Record

Bob Corker – TN Phone: 202-224-3344 Fax: 202-228-0566 Aide: Ashley Homing

    Special Daily Target

Please make sure to call both his office and Obama’s National Campaign Headquarters.

Barack Obama - IL Phone: 202- 224-2854 Fax: 202- 228-4260 Aide: Amrit Mehra National Campaign Headquarters (866) 675-2008

Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!

The next list will be posted Monday. A very happy and safe Thanksgiving weekend to you all!

    Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Belated Happy Birthday to you, Alex. Thank you for taking us along on your life's journey.

A year ago, we had such hope for Barbaro's recovery. It seems like a very long time since January 29th. Still, in his name we carry on.

I spoke to someone at Obama's campaign headquarters yesterday at length about why he should cosponsor S311. She said she'd had another call about it. I hoped she was getting more than 2 calls!

Thank you for the NY Times article on the Karakorum partnerships. A friend of mine is part of K. Elektra's ownership group, so I printed the article out for her. She will be thrilled.

Blessings to all FOBs and furbabies in need. Safe travels to all on the roads and in the skies.

To my Famblee, I hope all of you have a safe and blessed Thanksgiving..

    The Sacred Seven Prayers

O Great Spirit, who art before all else and who dwells in every object, in every person and in every place, we cry unto Thee. We summon Thee from the far places into our present awareness.

O Great Spirit of the North, who gives wings to the waters of the air and rolls the thick snowstorm before Thee, Who covers the Earth with a sparkling crystal carpet above whose deep tranquillity every sound is beautiful. Temper us with strength to withstand the biting blizzards, yet make us thankful for the beauty which follows and lies deep over the warm Earth in its wake.

O Great Spirit of the East, the land of the rising Sun, Who holds in Your right hand the years of our lives and in Your left the opportunities of each day. Brace us that we may not neglect our gifts nor lose in laziness the hopes of each day and the hopes of each year.

O Great Spirit of the South, whose warm breath of compassion melts the ice that gathers round our hearts, whose fragrance speaks of distant springs and summer days, dissolve our fears, melt our hatreds, kindle our love into flames of true and living realities. Teach us that he who is truly strong is also kind, he who is wise tempers justice with mercy, he who is truly brave matches courage with compassion.

O Great Spirit of the West, the land of the setting Sun, with Your soaring mountains and free, wide rolling prairies, bless us with knowledge of the peace which follows purity of striving and the freedom which follows like a flowing robe in the winds of a well-disciplined life. Teach us that the end is better than the beginning and that the setting sun glorifies not in vain.

O Great Spirit of the heavens, in the day's infinite blue and amid the countless stars of the night season, remind us that you are vast, that you are beautiful and majestic beyond all of our knowing or telling, but also that you are no further from us than the tilting upwards of our heads and the raising of our eyes.

O Great Spirit of Mother Earth beneath our feet, Master of metals, Germinator of seeds and the Storer of the Earth's unreckoned resources, help us to give thanks unceasingly for Your present bounty.

O Great Spirit of our souls, burning in our heart's yearning and in our innermost aspirations, speak to us now and always so that we may be aware of the greatness and goodness of Your gift of life and be worthy of this priceless privilege of living.

ROLL CALL!!!! I'M HERE AND CALLING

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO MY WONDERFUL FAMBLEE

Sometimes it's hard to keep perspective in our everyday routine & the long haul of our anti-slaughter movement. All we want is for our horses to be safe from the horror. It should be a no-brainer.
I'm am so THANKFUL for my ABR famblee. When I lost Clarissa I was ever so grateful for the support of this famblee. When I found Ice on the Spalding thread my famblee came through and helped save and bring him home to me. The House That Barbaro Built is the most incredible Home and I am grateful to have a place in it.
1 year ago this Thanksgiving weekend I made my first trip to Miracle Horse Rescue and fell in love with Cloud, Stephanie & Rob and all the horses. I am ever so thankful to have these wonderful people and horses in my life. I am thankful that the FOB funded the save of Rosie, Misty, Cloud, Glory and the others and that Baby B & Spirit came into a world of love and safety.
I am thankful that Alex Brown has maintained our Home sometimes under incredible duress.

To My Wonderful Famblee.....Everyone Enjoy The Holiday And All Who Will Be With You. I Love You All.

This is for the whole Famblee but addressed to Cathy whose post just touched me beyond words. I am not using the ###### because it really is for everyone.

Cathy, couldn't have said it better myself. Knowing my personal role in you finding Cloud has me dribbling here; didn't realize it was precisely a year ago.

OH, Cathy, knowing as you and I and some others do, that if not for my Blackie and me, MHR (most probably) would never have landed at TWR (I practically DRAGGED Steph here; that was way back when TWR seemed only concerned about TBs to the exclusion of all others . . .) - actually we have General (MHR appendix TB [at the time we thought he was a TB], who had been blinded by his former owner with a 2 by 4 - to thank, who attracted the FOBs to MHR once MHR started posting here.

ANYWAY - I am thankful for having the destiny to be the one because of whom you and Cloud found eachother. Among other things - I am grateful for the destiny that has landed me here among you, and for all of you who have so enriched my life on so many levels.

I can hardly type through the tears - need to go check and see whether that darned HAHS list is up yet.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at November 21, 2007 5:53 PM

    Happy Thanksgiving to all FsOB:
The senators return to DC December 3rd. They will be in sessions for one to three weeks. Beginning next week, we need to step up our efforts. In my two weeks in DC I found out:
    1. A lot of momentum for S. 311
    2. We are still calling, but the numbers are down
    3. There are a lot of YES votes in addition to
    the co-sponsors
Barbaro has given me many gifts, including friendships that will last my lifetime. In return for all Barbaro has given me, I will remain relentless in my efforts to end horse slaughter. Please, everyone give a little more. Recruit new warriors, make an extra call, urge family members to call. Every office I was in said the calls DO make a difference.
Senator Landrieu is committed to S. 311. Please support her by giving as much as you can for the next month.
Barbaro! It’s time for us to recapture the spirit, drive and sheer resolve that we used to have as his soldiers. It’s time for us to give this everything we have.
    Thanks everyone!

    Daryl.....I HEAR YOU.

So, for me I need to regroup and to get back on the bandwagon. We need to hear from all the FOBs, including the Silent Ones and the State Groups. If we communicate we will gain momentum.

How 'bout starting Monday we really implement our ROLL CALL. Everybody check in during the day and maybe we can report a little bit about our calls. Remember when there used to be 500 or so posts here. Look at us now. We're getting closer. Let's make a push....starting Monday. Take the 4 day Holiday, regroup and start en force. Whadda ya say?

ALEX - you will likely appreciate this comment from a fellow Englishman (my 90 year-old father) on the political campaign...he is HORRIFIED that by the time of the '08 election, the campaign will have lasted 2 years! He advocates the English system because "if you can't present your case in 6 weeks, you don't belong in the race!"

Cherokee Devotional for 11/21 emailed to me by Harriette Brillianthawk (I LOVE THIS ONE A LOT)

Thanksgiving time means the first hard freeze, the first spitting ice to rattle the dry autumn leaves. Early morning frost crystallizes grasses into rods of light. The last bit of bright color is gone from the woods, and the last walk has been taken without gloves and a sweater. But it also means family, si da ne lv hi, to the Cherokee. Tradition holds true in keeping a common thread with other times and other persons. We remember them with love and appreciation. We cook the same food, continue the same good natured bantering and chaos with children underfoot. With the flow of activity, some moments can be stressful---but then, someone recalls earlier times. The young ones say what it means to them. Suddenly the tradition takes a tighter hold—and no one minds.

So it is with Wakan Tanka. We believe that he is everywhere, yet, he is to us the spirit of our friends, whose voices we cannot hear.

    Chased By Bears

    #########
Harriette - thanks for the special post you put up here at Comments, to all the manifestations of the Great Spirit. GREAT to see you posting here once more! So glad you're back . . .

The other night I discovered that a new friend from our music venue is soon to acquire his Indian Name (can't remember name of tribe; he's from N Wisc) in a ceremony along with his Father. I didn't even know he was Native American.

BTW - did I ever tell you all my favorite "Indian Name" that I was given by a co-worker fellow horse owner many decades ago - Running Narrative.

I knew that the name "Chased By Bears" rang a bell for me. Called to mind the stage direction

"Exit Pursued by a bear" - in Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale," Act III, scene iii, line 57 = "Perhaps the most famous stage direction in English," per the footnote in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations.

Funny - yet another example of how things are the same all over for all of us . . . From Shakespeare's time and setting to the author of Harriette's wonderful quote, so much in commmon -

    ####Cathy Potter:
You are so right.......we are close.....now we have to re-unite, get everyone on board and be relentless for the next month.
We can get this done, but it will take everyone pulling together, people posting positive things to build the momentum.
I spent last Friday with Martita. Talk about devotion........she calls me up and says she is taking the train from NYC to DC to support me and all FsOB. She gets on the train very early, I meet her a couple blocks from the senate buildings, she performs for Senator Landrieu's office staff! She goes home late at night.....all for Barbaro and his brothers and sisters. We must follow her example, her devotion to ending this insidious industry. We owe it to Martita, to Barbaro and to all the horses who will face a horrible death in Mexico!
I will post again Monday with a plea for everyone to give their all.

    Cathy and Daryl,

I am with you on the big push and the roll call starting Monday. We do need to hear that people are calling, faxing, or emailing and hearing the positive feedback. I really miss those days last year, but we can recreate them if everybody will sign on again and recommitt themselves.

Thank you, Alex, and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

    Hi Folks!

Sorry if this is a repeat, as I'm behind on reading posts! More generosity for us to be thankful for! :0)

Couple Donates $1 Million to UPenn Laminitis Research Fund

The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine has announced a gift of $1 million from philanthropists Marianne and John K. Castle to support its laminitis research.

"We are enormously grateful for the Castles' generosity. Their thoughtful philanthropy leverages two of the University's strengths--research and the translation of research into medicine for both animals and humans," said Penn President Amy Gutmann, PhD.

In speaking about the gift, John Castle said, "Marianne and I are thrilled to be able to support Dr. Orsini and the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in their research. Our hope is that the knowledge acquired will be important in helping both animals and humankind."

There are big plans for the funds.

"The Castles' generosity will allow us take a significant step forward in creating a research institute dedicated to sharing and advancing the breadth of knowledge about this deadly condition," said Joan C. Hendricks, VMD, PhD, the Gilbert S. Kahn Dean of Veterinary Medicine.

When fully funded, the institute will include new research laboratories, funding for research projects at Penn Vet, and in collaboration with other institutions, a home-care treatment model, support for student research opportunities, and improved clinical facilities.

In addition to funding research in laminitis, the Castles' gift will support the institute directorship, which will be held by James Orsini, DVM, Dipl. ACVS, associate professor of surgery at Penn Vet's New Bolton Center campus. In 2001, Orsini founded the First International Conference on Laminitis and Diseases of the Foot, building on his many years of experience treating patients afflicted with this condition. The biennial conference is funded in large part by the Castles, in memory of their beloved horse Spot, who died from laminitis.

EXTRA Nat'l Target List (HAHS) Still not accessible - posting AWI/SAPL target list instead.

Back from my trek to the office supply store to find that the HAHS list is still not showing up at their Yahoo Group site - so I've decided to post the AWI/SAPL Senate Target List (that I've been giving the DB post link for) so anyone who wants to call more Senators than the ABR Strategy list and their own Senators, can access the target list without going to the DB. (I think some people never go to the DB.) ANYWAY - here is the AWL/SAPL target list from which the HAHS Special Contact Lists are derived. (If the "regular" HAHS list is available later I will put it up both here and at the DB.)

    To All:
Here's a couple of thoughts I want to share with you all:

As I sit here reflecting on many wonderful things in my life, amongst the things I'm most thankful for is you, my famblee. I'm thankful that you have embraced me and that we work so hard for our Horses. I'm thankful that we take the time to remember the great ones, Ruffian, Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Man O'War; and the unknown ones, Ho Pats Mia, Fitch, Plum Trickey and Goldy born on Barbaro's birthday (which I believe was Barbaro's way of saying thank you to us all). I'm thankful that we remember those who take such loving care of our heros; owners like the Jacksons and the Firestones (you should see the lovely basket some FsOB sent Genuine Risk!) and the less well known who see to the Horses everyday. I'm thankful that many of us now know or are experience the joy and love of owning their own Horse.

I know deep in my heart that, as thankful as we may be, there are those who are even more thankful. In their hearts they say "Thank You" every day. Every day they take a breath they wouldn't have taken if it weren't for a Horse named Barbaro. They don't have a voice to express their gratitude, so from them I pass this message to you:

"Thank you for saving our lives and the lives of so many of our brothers and sisters. Please know that deep in our hearts we are eternally greatful. When we leave this world for "Thisgoodplace," we will be there to greet you at the Rainbow Bridge.

    Love,
    The Horses"

    Happy Thanksgiving Everyone.

I feel animals, because they are so powerlesss before us, are a test of our character...We can choose a path of cruelty and harm, or kindness and mercy. The above is a quote I read once. I really believe it.

    Hay All,

On this Thanksgiving Eve, I would like to tell you how very grateful I am to know all of you, to be an FOB, and to have enjoyed the unique and wondrous privilege of loving BARBARO...but, my mere words would be to poor to cover it.

So, I just want to simply say, "I Love my Famblee." I hope that you will feel the meaning that is so rich and beautiful.

Here is another bit of what was happening only a moment after the Young Prince stepped into the pure bright light. I offer it for your comfort and delight.

... Stomping and snoofing, he felt so happy. As he stood in the still bright light, he could smell them. They nickered and neighed. Some pranced about, and others came to touch noses with the newly arrived Young Prince.

The Red Princes were held in high regard, as were the Bay Queens and all of the Grey Sovereigns. Each and every one there had a royal title, from the most diminutive donkey, to the tallest Shire. Each was known by several names...names given, names chosen, and titles earned as well.

One of the Red Princes introduced himself as "Bright Flame." He was a tall, powerfully built, fiery red chestnut stallion, with a small white star on his forehead, and very regal. The spirit behind his eyes was gentle and kind. They showed that he had known great love, great sorrow, and great wisdom. And, although the story of his heart-song revealed a tragic tale of betrayal, his eyes had the gentle grace of forgiveness in them. Those fiery flickers had an inner glow like drops of deep amber. They were full of peace.

Standing tall, and straight legged, he raised his head high, then lowered it with a "whooosh" from his nostrils and a friendly nod.

He said, "Welcome, Young Prince, " in a voice heard only with the heart.

"My Brother-of-Roses, Undefeated Champion, you and I share much more than a sweet smelling blanket or accolades for our swiftness. In your name and mine, many hearts will be spared the terror and pain of the great betrayal. In your name and mine, many lives will be saved. I have been granted the high honor of being first to welcome you to Thisgoodplace, in frenship and in gratitude."

"My Brother, it was your frens who found and rescued my daughter. Because they loved you, she is out of danger, and will now live a long and happy life, in the otherplace. She will taste the grass and feel the gentle breezes brush her mane. The sun will shine on her back, as she strolls her pasture. She will eat carrots and minties from the hands of good people who love her. They are the same people who loved me."

He bowed low his fiery maned head, then reared up in a high standing pose and whistled a bright whinny. He came down with a "phhfffff," shook himself, then turned to stand next to the Young Prince.

A throng of "Thank Yous" and "Welcomes" arose from the hearts of the royal assembly. The Young Prince held court, as, one-by-one-by-one he was greeted. Some spoke, some merely turned an ear, twitched a muscle, or gently bumped him. Each heart had a story to tell. The Young Prince would come to know them all.

They are only a thought away. I will always be Thankful.

I hope your Thanksgiving celebrations with your families are richly blessed.

    Your FOB Fren, O ^-,^

The VERY LAST listing is WRONG. OOOPS!

I've learned from an FOB at the DB, that the fax number provided for Sen. Webb in the AWI/SAPL list is incorrect. The correct fax for Sen. Webb is 202-228-6363.

So sorry - I just copied the list from the AWI/SAPL info. Will let them know. (I checked Jim Webb's website and the FOB is right.)

ooops, just went to post the correct fax number at various DB posts of mine, and found the erroneous number was my fault, not theirs; the AWI/SAPL list was posted without contact info, only names of Senators and some bkgrnd info. I am the responsible party who inserted the contact info on all of them. Don't know where the wrong fax number came from. But it's on me, not AWI/SAPL.

    Heavenly Thanksgiving update:

Slew is covered in flour...he appears to be a black and white appaloosa of some sort. Affirmed and Man O'War are pre-mixing the Heavenly batter for the apple cobbler (again, cause Slew dropped it on the floor and tried to re-use it, strictly implementing his 5-second rule!), and someone just "wheeled" a spoonful of cooked mashed squash at me.....I think it was Capote or Massoud, not sure, for they are both looking up at the Heavenly ceiling whistling!--my wings are an orange mess!!!--I can only imagine how tomorrow's Heavenly dinner will unfold!!

    Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, I am thankful to be part of such a great group working to end the slaughter of our valiant equine friends and supporting each other and so many great causes. And I am thankful for Nala, Over Enough and my husband, all who have overcome life threatening illnesses this year.

The Florida group is taking the rest of the week off and will be going strong starting Monday, good to see John Edwards speaking out. We are closer than ever to finishing what Barbaro started. We will do this for him.

After The Green Monkey's race, it was stated they are going to check him for breathing problems due to the way he stopped after taking the lead. Hope he is ok, poor guy.

Happy Thanksgiving and many blessings to the entire family of FOB's! Barbaro brought us all together, and for Barbaro, we remain together.

Haven't posted lately, but I am still very much here. Love to all, and prayers for all those in need at this time of year.

    ####Dear MJ,

Hello, My Fren. I am OK. I haven't had much time to spend writing in Thisgoodplace.(I do miss it so!)

I am still divorcing, with a mind and heart reeling from the pain of the betrayal. We were together for 27 years. The waves of pain are not so frequent and intense as they were a few weeks ago. Prayer has helped a lot.

I know it sounds dramatic, but "waves of pain,"...that is the only way I can describe it.

The large Art project that I have been working on, after work and on weekends is nearly completed. It might be finished within the next two weeks. When it is finished, I will have more time and energy for myself. By then, I will have presented my counter proposals to my husband, and, possibly settle and be able to keep my house.

Since mid-August,life has been a rollercoaster, that I really want to get off. I do sense a slowing, and know that it will be over soon...then, perhaps I will again find the peace that allows me to return to Thisgoodplace.

I have been lurking, here, with occasional posts, and I DO make my calls, and send e-mails.

(Vern Ehlers, my worthless Congressman seems to be a no-good-sell-out. He had not committed to co-sponsorship this time around. I keep encouraging my two senators to use their powers of persuasion on the Senate floor. They are both on board, but seem to be impotent, thus far.

There WILL be happier times to share. Right now, I'm just hanging on tightly to the rollercoaster bar, and looking forward to getting back on the carousel when this frightful ride is over.

MJ, Thanks for asking. You are such a sweet, and kind Fren.

I am so Thankful to be here with all of you.

Goodnight All. Sweet dreams. Hug your families a little tighter, and a little longer, when you gather around your tables tomorrow.

    Your FOB Fren, O ^-,^

Otherlyn....dear person...the firsts are the worst....and the 'waves of pain' become further and further apart, until they are 'no more':) I promise!!

When you get to the 'other side' of this experience, you will be ever amazed at your strength:)

I was writing here a few days ago about those Hallmark "Maxine" cards and how funny I think she is!!! :) There was one today I saw where she was saying, "It's Thanksgiving! If I see a man in my kitchen, I'll know it's a commercial on TV" !!! lol! There were days when I was on that rollercoaster that I'd have no doubt cried reading that card...now? I LAUGH:) It is O.K...finallllllly!

Have a good day tomorrow with your famblee and frens....xoxoxo
