    Barbaro Updates: 439

    updates are now here.

Update 2765: Just a very sad situation and a reminder of the dangers for those working with horses: Severely injured trainer seeks assistance.

Update 2764: Monday's update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:

I'm sitting at work on Monday morning going over in my mind the happenings at Double Trouble this weekend and my thought was to share with all of you. We had a very busy weekend. Saturday was a big breeze day. Molly and Wanda worked and they had a nice half mile work. Diva and Kitty went together and worked another easy three eigths of a mile. Diva is turning into a monster in that her body is becoming a machine. She is a big girl to begin with but now she is getting very muscular and doesn't look at all like a baby. Her mental state is a tough one. Luke was lucky and got to go to the gate on Saturday with Veiled Reference. I quickly reminded him not to do too much. He was a happy camper. Veiled Reference ran yesterday at Charles Town against the boys and Kicked butt. She won easily and came back happy with herself. That was a nice win. Along with the high of winning at Charles Town there is a bit of sad news. Mass Romantic was claimed on Saturday. I gave her a talk on Saturday morning and told her to take care of herself. Several times she got kisses as I passed by, she is such a love. Mike took her to the races and she was giving him back rubs in the receiving barn. I will really miss her. Meghan and I were feeding dinner on Saturday night and it was so quiet without her there pawing for attention and her dinner. There is always in this business the reminder that we only have these animals for a short while. My goal is to give them as much love as they can get while the're here. I'll leave the training up to Tim.

Update 2763: An interview with Barbaro's Penn Photographer, Sabina Louise Pierce, along with accompanying photographs: The 2007 'Best Of' Series.

Update 2762: Steve Haskin takes a look at the current state of the 2yo crop with an eye on next year's Kentucky Derby: Kentucky Derby Trail: Odd Man In.

Update 2761: Mondays are a day off here at Sam Houston Race Park. The track is closed so no training. I am trying to create a Mission Statement for the ABR sites, please provide feedback: ABR Mission Statement: RFC.

    Keep calling.

Good morning, beloved Barbaro...I have been walking down memory lane this morning and stumbled upon the Thanksgiving greeting I emailed to the Fans of Barbaro last year. It was all about YOU - your strength and courage and determination to live...very poignant to read, but no less true this year.

Thank you and all our dear ones in Equine Heaven for continuing to inspire our efforts and guide our steps! (And if you find your face needs a good washing, my Princess Maizie Lee has a fine raspy tongue and would be glad to oblige...)

I LOVE YOU FOREVER, BIG BOSS HORSE!

    Good morning All,
How do you like this Texas "winter"weather, Alex??? :)
There has been 3 articles published in a Swedish horse magazine, about Exceller, The Exceller fund, horse slaughter in the US, rescue groups, the MO double-decker accident, and more... So far I have translated 2 of them and will work on the third one. If anyone is interested it is in this thread: http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=16939.1

    Good morning everyone,

Please take this news from DC as the catalyst to energize everyone you know to help with our cause. We need more co-sponsors! We're so close.

Harriette, I hope you're feeling better today. Cheryl, you too!

MJ and CJ, bless you for your efforts at the Hoosier Park Paddock sale, I feel grateful to read your words of the outcome of the sale and know that you two made a hugh difference there.

Martita, what powerful posts yesterday. The similarities between the plights of the horses and the women and children are chilling. It was right there in front of us all along and I, like so many possibly, didn't make the connection. Your poetic words drove it home.

Laurie in MN, once again, I marvel at your eloquence, kindness and ability to warm our hearts with your tuck-ins.

Happy Birthday, Alex! Sorry I'm a day late!

Please pray for the poor dogs found mutilated here in Northeast PA! Dogs and puppies of the same breed have been found terribly mutilated and skinned, and the Humane Society is desperate to find answers! I can't believe someone would do that! Pray that the people who did are found and prosecuted!

Love to all the horses & fingers crossed for S311!

    Good Morning, Famblee...

For any of you who might have been 'away' from the board for the weekend...as I arrived home late Friday afternoon, CA time...I had TWENTY-ONE e-mails waiting for me to let me know S311 had made it to the calendar!!!! YIPPEEEEE-SKIPPPPYYYYYYY was my first thought....THEN....I got sooooooo 'NERVOUUUUUUUUUUUUSSSSSEEEEE'....I started a Candle Group....I said then, it might be early....and I still have that feeling today, HOWEVER...if you feel so inclined, and have an extra minute....PLEASE go to www.gratefulness.org and click on 'search'....put S311 in 'group search' and PLEASSSSSSEEEE light a candle...I figure it can't hurt and might just HELP:) I'm sorry, I don't know how to do the 'blue ink' thingy....:/

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!!

Nancy,CT: I, too, have been thinking of last year this time...in particular, the day before Thanksgiving, in my kitchen cooking...smiling about how WELL Barbaro was doing at New Bolton...:) I stopped for a few minutes to come to the computer to write him another 'love note' on his Message Board....It is hard for me this year...I guess the 'firsts' are always the hardest...it just makes me a little bit sad to remember all the elation at this time last year, knowing this year, what came to be...

WE LOVE YOU, BARBARO:) WE MISS YOU JUST 'AWFUL'...

Has anyone or do you think we should send a Thanksgiving to Libby and the horse donors at UPenn?????

Posted by: joan roya at November 19, 2007 3:37 PM

Alex, I think a mission statement is a good idea since the sight has become a little unfocused. In my case (my opinion only)the mission statement is a case of closing the barn door after the horses have already escaped. I've already figured out which charities/private rescues that I will support and they know how to get in touch with me and I've followed horse racing all my life so I'll get my reporting from the usual reliable sources.

Good Luck, Be Well. It has been a fun ride.

JOE AND CATHY DOING THE RIGHT THING, AS ALL ARCHANGELS ARE COMMANDED TO DO. gOD BLESS THEM AND ALL THEIR CHARGES....jonna

Monday, November 19th... Our deepest sympathies go to neighbors Gene and Pam Story, who last night lost their gelding Cutter. A very sad night in our neighborhood. It will be strange to drive by and not see Cutter in his paddock. Rest In Peace Cutter.

You could take the last few days, wad em up, and toss them away. No argument from us. Our good friend Bill Austin lost his filly Wee Tee Too. And another good friend Jessica Talbot said goodbye to her old mare Wanda, who this year turned 30. Jessica has owned Wanda for the last 3 years. It was impossible to have a conversation with Jessica that did not include Wanda.

We send our best to Bill Austin, Jessica Talbot, and Gene and Pam Story.

Gary Duncan is gone for a week to enjoy Thanksgiving with far away family. We are scrambling for transportation help. Needy horses all over California. Yesterday Holly Meeks picked up a quarter horse gelding in Pleasanton, and delivered him to his new home in Sacramento. Also yesterday Paula Coombs was kind enough to pick up an unwanted pinto gelding in Vallejo, and deliver him to his new home in Santa Cruz. An all day trip, and we very much thank Paula Coombs and Holly Meeks.

Cathy and I wish no disrespect to anyone. Especially those who bring us gifts. But there is just way too much food. So our Thanksgiving plans have been altered a little. We have enough food to help other families, and Thursday will be spent sharing our goodies. How fun is this going to be? We have friends who struggle with cash flow, so we get to bring them turkeys and all the side dishes. Hopefully the dinners will arrive without a bite gone. I can only imagine the smells coming from our little Honda.

We are incredibly Thankful for 10 year old Daniel Harper. Also Mikka Thorson. Emily Hanks. Patti Lu. Paula and Becky Coombs. Hannah Webber. Stephanie Diaz. Danni Dutton. And Jennifer Wright. Please know your food will be shared by those who are grateful, not to mention speechless. They cannot believe Thanksgiving dinner will be brought to their front door.

Our little tiny website. On Thanksgiving Day our little tiny website will be feeding 7 families. This is way beyond cool.

    Joe

He came to us last week from a feed lot, and you can tell from his hips how starved he is. We named him Walton, and there is a racing tattoo which says he is 6 years old.

Happy Birthday Jenny and Marie Hartman! Today they turn a whopping 17, and it seems like last week when they were only 10. Tonight is a birthday blast at Joes Crab Shack. The picture below on the right shows Marie and Jenny at their 15th birthday party. We wish them both a very Happy Birthday.

I received a bullitin from the ASPCA and they stated that they have under cover video of the horses dying in the slaughter house. I sure would like the senate, etc, to see them. Already Thanksgiving and cant help but remember this time last year we had such great hopes for our Barbaro. It will be Jan. 29th soon and maybe we can send the Jacksons something in memory of Barbaro.

Extra Monday 11/19 Nat'l Target List (HAHS)

    PREFACE/Heads-Up - something new -

per Daryl Smoliak's feedback/request: Ask the Senators who may support S 311 but don't want to cosponsor, to send a brief "letter of support" to Senator Mary Landrieu, sponsor and promoter of the Bill.

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all your calls.

IMO - convey the website www.vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - ask them to look at Press Release dated 10/9. Tell them to look for a copy of PR dated 10/9 that should have arrived at their offices recently.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

    800-828-0498

    800-459-1887

    800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy - and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE NEW SUGGESTION/ CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE Prior HS History above the LIST OF SENATORS below.)

    1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

    2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

    3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

    4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

    5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

    Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Monday 11/19) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311; ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the current/new ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind.

The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:
"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who in not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

I still get chills when I hear the words, "And here comes Barbaro." I still also get a lump in my throat when watching some of those videos, he was so beautiful and so amazing, a true Champion and a true Hero!

Great to see everyone still calling and faxing even though S311 has been put on the calendar. I have encouraged my Florida group that our work is by no means done, horses are dying horrible deaths everyday and Congress has a very short memory. We must help keep the horse slaughter issue in the forefront until these bills are passed.

Thank you so much to everyone who offered encouragement and prayers for my husband who had heart surgery last week. He is home and recovering as is Over Enough.

Got home to see Evening Attire run on Saturday in the feature, he dwealt at the start as usual but ran a very respectable third, bless his heart and most important, came home safe.

Nancy in CT or anyone - any news on Bully for Us - a maiden who fell in the stretch of the 6th race at Aqueduct on Sat?

BARB M - just fabulous news about both your husband and Over Enough!

    (from The BloodHorse)

Jockey Raul Rojas suffered two fractured neck vertebrae after his mount, Bully for Us, unseated the rider in Aqueduct’s sixth race Nov. 17.

“He will be out at least two months,” said Rojas’ agent, Jorge Velasquez, Nov. 18. “Otherwise, he is okay. He is in some pain. I think he will get out of the hospital in the next day or two.”

Rojas was admitted to North Shore University Hospital in Manhassett, NY, after the accident.

Bully for Us, trained by Scott Schwartz and owned by his father, Herbert, stumbled near the eighth pole in the maiden race for New York-bred 2-year-olds. Bully for Us, who got up after he fell and galloped away, escaped injury. The gelded son of Holy Bull contested the pace for a quarter mile in the 5 ½-furlong dirt race before tiring.

“It was a freak accident; the horse just went down,” Velasquez said. “I don’t know if he stumbled suddenly or what. He then got up and galloped away.”

No other horses or riders were involved in the spill.

Posted by: Lynne Brown at November 19, 2007 11:17 PM

    Dear Frens,

As the air grows crisp, and the sky darkens early, I can't help but hearken back to the cold Autumn of '06.

We had so much to be thankful for as our great champion's hoof grew, and his spirits soared, in spite of his hospital confinement. He showed such heart, and sweetness in his compliance and his will to live.

He was loved so very much. I am so thankful to have "known" him. I give thanks for our love for him, and for knowing all of you.

I indulge the moment to submit another excerpt of the story, for your comfort in these darkening days approaching the end of this year.

ONLY A MOMENT BEFORE THE WIND

The Young Prince blinked as the clear bright light met his eyes. Only a moment before, he was in a dimly lit place, filled with the light of love, but clouded by a greying cover of sadness.

Only a moment before, he had been in great pain. As an injured athlete, he had known pain, but never the likes of which he had endured since just before this morning's dawn. It was growing...white hot and horrible! Around him were the familiar sights and sounds of the hospital, a place that he had known as "home" for so long. He felt no fear, only confusion. He was usually confident that the people would know what to do...but, oh...the pain!

In spite of the white-hot-horror, he also felt the comforting touch of the gentle people who loved and cared for him. Today he tasted tears in their kisses. He heard Docker say, "I'm sorry," and he wondered...but only for a moment, for the cloud thickened, and covered them all. Their forms faded, then everyone was gone.

Suddenly, there was only clear bright light. It was true light, with crystalline essence of every prismatic element. All colors at once, so pure, so vibrant that he blinked at the stark contrast to where he had been, and what he had seen, only a moment before.

He felt a quickening in his body. He was more alive than ever...and his feet didn't hurt anymore. So, he began to run. He outran even the brightness. He was free! His companion was the wind itself, or so it seemed, for as he ran, he knew he wasn't alone.

His feet flew over soft grass, hardly touching the turf. He had been a champion undefeated runner, with a heart that loved to win. This time, however, he wasn't running for the win. This time he ran for joy, with no end to it. There would be no finish line. The horizon went on forever, and he would reach it.

Then he saw something that made his heart leap. He and the wind had company. To his right, left, and all around, were others like him. He saw an eye flash here, a wisp of mane there. The moment he thought about their presence, they came into focus, and he slowed to an easy gallop. The herd slowed with him, and soon, they all stopped.

Stomping and snoofing, he felt so happy. As he stood in the still bright light, he could smell them. They nickered and neighed. Some pranced about, and others came to touch noses with the newly arrived Young Prince.

Please try to contact any of the many FOBs who seem to have fadded away, since last year. If they are on your e-mail address books, please take a moment to invite hem back. We, and HE, need their help, as we accelerate our efforts to get the anti-S legislation passed.

It was snowing/sleeting at the ranch today so didn't stay long. Got to spend some time with the boys in the barn, but Stormy wasn't happy that I left so early...but the roads up there get slippery fast. Will be at the ranch Thanksgiving...hopefully the weather will cooperate so we can go riding - if not, I'll just camp myself out in the pasture and just be with the boys.

Will be at Tim's barn this Sunday...

    Strategy for Tuesday November 20

While everyone is very excited to hear the S311 has been put on the calendar, it is also important to remember that this is only procedural. It does not change any of our strategy yet. We must still call the people we’ve been asked to target because they will make the difference in whether we have enough support to pass the bill. Letters of support from senators who would rather not cosponsor but will vote for our legislation, have been requested. They should be sent to Senator Landrieu’s office.

Remember….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico.

    Hello Barbaro,

Today I gathered comfort in an email from a Fan of yours. Words of care and reason, delivered in the gentlest of ways...but then, I'm not surprised. Thank you fren... and thank you Honey for bringing this amazing famblee into my life...

Honey, I have spent months reading about other's cards and letters to your Mommy and Daddy, Michael, Dr. Richardson, Alex and Peter Brette, to name a few.

I have not written them...yet. None of them. It's not due to lack of care or concern, disrespect or doubt.

What I have been feeling, what you and your loved ones have taught and shared with me, has left my heart so full, it spills over into racing thoughts and ideas as to how I can help ease or comfort someone's life. A dear friend of mine, refers to her thoughts as "symphonies"... I love that.

But to put into words to be written to your loved ones, I don't know where to start. I have thought that my words wouldn't say anything that they haven't read before.

Honey, looking at the photos of you that Alex blue-linked for us, you gave me the nudge I needed...thank you.

The picture that seems to tug at most of our hearts is the last one, with you and Dr. Richardson. The look...

I heard Dr. Richardson say at the press conference, between moments of trying to regain his composure, that he spoke to you in the last moments...

Honey, it has never been reported in full, what he said. (And thank goodness for that. Some things are meant to be sacred and private)

But chances are, most of the words were words you had heard before. But, I bet that didn't diminish their strength and layer of comfort during those moments...with your trusted friend, at your side.

And you, in that last photo of the post, looking at Dr. Richardson... chances are, other patients have looked at him in the same manner, straight on, nothing held back.

But Honey, don't you think that your look stays in his mind, in his heart? Forever?

The words may be the same, but to quote one of Alex's "Rules", we each own the content.

Your loved ones have huge and receptive hearts. I believe that they have felt the individual emotions and messages that your Fans and famblee have written to them.

I know in my heart that they have gathered strength, comfort, inspiration and joy in the words...

So, I will put my thoughts into words. I will reach out to your loved ones Honey. Yes Honey, I will remind them how much you love them. Yes, I will tell them to watch for you in their sweet dreams... yes, every night.

Now that I've told you my thoughts, have I made you sleepy? Should we grab your blanket and cuddle you up for the night?

We'll pull the blanket up high on your neck and fluff the folds perfectly for nuzzling.

Your Dream Angels are busy helping Jack Frost with his overtime work and they need to speed things up before daylight...it seems speed is your specialty and they're looking at you Honey!

Sweet dreams to you Barbaro. Remember, your healing is complete and strength will forever carry you through your days and into the sweet dreams of your loved ones.

Good night Honey. I love you. XXOOxxoxo

LaurieH...your tuck-in is one of your best (then again, each new one is always the best one...). I loved looking at the pictures of Barbaro today...and I remember how joyous we all were when Dr.R. took him grazing outdoors. The two of them were best buds, yes? I know when you write to everybody, those letters will be full of your gentleness and caring. What a gift you will be giving.

    Hello Lyn,

    Thank you sooo much.

The pictures are beautiful... and precious. I remember vividly the first we heard that Barbaro was outside to graze. An answered prayer.

I'm surprised it took me so long to realize that when words are from the heart, as all of ours are, it doesn't matter how many times you hear them repeated. They have impact. They have a place. They have purpose.

Yes, Lyn, they are a gift...all of our heartfelt words, are a gift. Just think of all of the "gift exchanges" between Barbaro's loved ones and Fans...priceless.

    Good night dear fren...

    Patty in Dallas,

Thank you for your kind words.

Barbaro has found a place in all of our hearts... without saying a word.

He has a way of stirring up emotion, inspiration and determination. Our Big Boss Horse.

Good night Patty. Sweet dreams of Barbaro, grazing in the grass with the sun on his back and the wind in his mane.

Good night to you Liz. May you keep a watch for a bay blur in your dreams...our Barbaro. And may you be offered the chance to give a kiss where the Angels have kissed him...the snip on the tip of his nose. Good night!

    For Harriette and LaurieH

For All Of Us who Love Barbaro
    I dedicate this story.

Barbaro was having another bad day, he hadn’t slept well. Even with the pain medicine he still hurt. His legs hurt, all of them, his back hooves hurt. He hurt all over and he was tired. He loved all the people here at NBC, especially Dr Richardson, but he was tired of these four walls, he wanted to go outside and feel the warm sun again. He loved his mom more than anyone, she knew him better than anyone, and bless her heart, she always had the blue tote with the fresh Lael grass. Lately, he didn’t even much feel like eating, but he did to please her, He always tried to put on a show of feeling good for mom, even trying to nip her occasionally to make her smile. He loved to see mom smile.
But still, the truth was he hurt and he wanted Dr Richardson to make him well, once and for all.
When Dr Richardson came that morning, he had his “procedure” face on. Here we go again, Barbaro thought. Another surgery, I’ll wake up in the swimming pool. I sure hope Dr R has the cure for me this time.
When Barbaro started waking up, he felt something tickling his nose and when he tried to open his eyes there was a light so bright it almost blinded him. The light felt wonderful, it was so warm, and it was hard to describe, the light felt like love. It surrounded him and felt so good, like all the hugs his mom had ever given him. When his eyes adjusted to the light more things became aware to Barbaro.
He wasn’t in a pool ,he was in a field of clover and buttercups and the tickle on his nose was a butterfly! He also noticed he felt no pain, his crooked legs were straight again ,his hooves were well ! Dr R had done it, he remembered now the last thing Dr R had said….Barbaro when you wake up you’ll be good as new!
The Light he felt, he now knew was GOD himself, the Creator of all life.
God himself welcomed him to Rainbow Bridge. He explained to Barbaro it is here that all animals wait for their human keepers
So they can cross the bridge to Heaven together.
Barbaro had never seen so many horses, dogs, cats, animals and birds of every kind, large and small. Everyone got along, no one was sick and all made him feel loved and at home.
A couple of the horse who greeted him were there by special permission from God, they had already crossed over the Bridge but wanted to welcome Barbaro. Barbaro knew of the legendary stores of Man O War, Seabiscuit and War Admiral, here they were to say hello. There were also a couple donkeys that came to greet him. One once carried pregnant Mary into Bethlehem, the other one had carried Jesus in to Jerusalem.
Barbaro was so happy to be here. He thought this has to be the greatest place in all the world . He spent the afternoon racing Secretariat to the fence and eating clover with Lost in the Fog. Yes, he was very busy his first day at the bridge, he even learned he could FLY!! He always knew he could run fast, now he’d become a horse angel and he could fly!! He could look down on Earth and see all the people who loved him. He could finally put names and faces together. All the FOB that had faithfully loved and prayed for him, sent him cards and letters , baskets of flowers, apples and carrots, pears and those green mints he loved.
He was happy but they all looked sad. He wanted to yell to them,
“Hay, it’s me, Barbaro, I’m well. Your prayers have been answered. Don’t be sad.”
Barbaro had had a long day. He thought it was time to go to sleep. But before he did he had one thing he had to do.
    Hello Laurie H,
I know it’s been a long day, you look sad & tired. Why don’t we get your blanket.. Honey, tonight I’m going to cover you with my blanket, the sage cashmere one you gave me, it’s always been my favorite. Don’t be sad, Laurie, God made me well.
Tonight, We’ll pull the blanket high on your neck so you can feel my love for you. As you sleep the dream angel will come. Guess what, Laurie, it will be me! I’m your dream angel now. Sometimes when you’re just waking up, and you feel a tickle on your nose or a hair across your face, you’ll know I’ve been there to check on you. That tickle is my mane touching your face.
Shhh time to go to sleep. I’ll be here for you every night when you sleep.
    XOXOxoxo Barbaro

That being taken care of Barbaro could finally lay down to sleep himself. He wanted to dream about the First Saturday in May,the day he and his pal Edgar had run the very best race. He could still remember Edgar’s hand on his mane, the smell of roses, his mom’s hug and he fell asleep hearing the song thousands sung that day…
    Weep no more, my lady
    Oh weep no more, today,
We sill sing one song for
    My Old Kentucky Home
    For My Old Kentucky Home
    Far Away………………….

    I love you Barbaro

    Happy Birthday, Liz!

Gae, I hope you reconsider and stick around. With or without a mission statement, good things happen here--because of the people.

LAURIE H--to paraphrase Stevie Nicks, you are "the poet in our hearts." Thank you for sharing your gift.

Barbaro was simply gorgeous. Through his eyes you could see his soul. I will always love him.

    Susan E.,

OMG! There is no way you could have known this but I am a HUGE Stevie Nicks fan! I am so thrilled and touched that you would associate me with her. I thank you Susan. I thank you.

I have to tell you Susan, I have been looking for a painting or something else of Pegasus for a Christmas gift for Taylor, the now-thirteen year old in my life, via my Montego.

I have seen a series of prints of an amazing Pegasus being ridden by...are you ready?! a black and white cat!!!!!

Susan, it puts your Felix and his friends in Equine Heaven in full view! The cat appears to be somewhat of a tuxedo...

Do you want me to check for a link for you?!

And again Susan, thank you for mentioning Stevie Nicks. Her lyrics are hauntingly soulful and she arranges words in ways that make you feel emotion as well as the melody. Yes, I am a fan.

    Barbaro Honey,

You brought me to tears. It's okay Honey. It's okay. They have been sitting around waiting to happen for awhile and I think you knew that.

But you should be in bed! Now I know why I think of you when Montego pulls her little antics... you're both my "little toddlers"!

Good night, again, Honey. And, good night and thank you to your "Angel". Kisses to you both...xxoo

All those gorgeous photos by Sabina, and all those beautiful words some of you weave magic with . . . . . to all who were here last year at this time, and to all who have joined us, thank you from my heart for the gift of these most special posts today.
This week seems particularly difficult, thinking back to where we were last year with Barbaro.
And even though I often get that special sense of Barbaro in all his radiance standing right at the Heavenly Gates peering down on us, a whispered neigh in Dr. Richardson's ear, a soft brush of muzzle against Mrs. Jackson's cheek, a "message" to Edgar, the tears still begin to fall . . . . out of love, out of awe.
Thanks everyone for coming together today, tonight, it's good to be here with all of you.

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever. Run with the angels honey!! I love you so!

    with love, Lou Ann

Laurie H, I'm bowled over! Thank you.

Funny, I was listening to "Silver Spring" last night--just love it. And I heard "Sarah" only this morning--a song newly loved because I have a beautiful little great-niece named Sarah.

And yes, I'd love to see a link to Pegasus and the tux.
