    Barbaro Updates: 438

    updates are now here.

Update 2760: Bloodhorse on Taletobetold's race: Flying Circle Scores Dramatic Win, excerpt:

Said Leparoux : "It was pretty close to the wire for the stewards to make any change, but we've got to try -- you never know. She always tries, and I think today she was kind of the best, but we needed a little more luck."

Update 2759: As an exercise rider you do get attached to some horses you ride, especially horses you ride everyday. Working for Eddie Kenneally I got attached to two fillies, two horses I rode everyday unless they were breezing: Gems Sleuth and Taletobetold. Taletobetold was in a stakes race at Churchill Downs this afternoon and was coming off a good second in a stakes race at Keeneland. Anyway, she ran a terrific race today to finish a closing second, and was pretty unlucky not to get up on the line and win (stewards inquiry and jockey's objection). It was brilliant to watch, and she cooled out well afterwards. I am just very excited for her.

McDymano is now retired: Good Night Shirt Wins Colonial Cup.

Update 2758: Yesterday I enjoyed my visit to Habitat for Horses. I will also plan a visit out to LOPE Texas which garnered some recent press: LOPE Texas Launches Founders Circle.

Off to Sam Houston Race Park to watch some racing from Churchill Downs. There is no HRTV or TVG in Texas (I think).

Update 2757: Rain, rain, rain, rain. A wet morning's work although still rather warm. I only had six to ride which was quite nice. We had two new riders come in this morning. One of the horses I took to the gate to just stand and back out. Another horse I open galloped 3/8ths and he seemed to go quite well. Tomorrow the track is closed for training so tomorrow is my day off!

Update 2756: Unlike my job in Kentucky, I have to work sundays, oh well ... off to work.

Buzzards Bay faded after setting the pace in his race yesterday on the Tapeta surface at Golden Gate Fields: 'Mojave Rolls On in All American.

Update 2755: A lovely afternoon spent with Jerry Finch of Habitat for Horses. He has been a strong advocate for the end of horse slaughter for a long time so it was interesting to get his perspective. Habitat for Horses takes in abuse cases and after lunch Jerry showed me around. These horses looked so peaceful in his presence.

Earlier in the day I got some good news. Thanks to some work and cooperation from CANTER and MidAtlantic Horse Rescue a horse was shipped out of Charles Town who was a significant risk. A friend of mine who is at Charles Town had called me a few days earlier about the options of getting the horse out of risk. Some quick actions saved her.

Update 2754: Nine sets today. We had two new riders, one of whom showed up, the other did not which meant the assistant trainer had to ride his nine. Anyway, I was calculating how many miles I rode this morning, and its about fourteen miles galloping and seven miles jogging. Not too bad exercise to start the day. Lovely weather and the day is still young so plenty to do. Thanks for all the birthday wishes, they mean a lot.

Update 2753: Keeneland's November breeding stock sale remains strong through day 12: Seven-year-old mare Eshaarat tops strong Keeneland session on Friday.

Two site favorites are running this weekend: Buzzards Bay and McDynamo.

    Good morning, fellow Fans!

It's a bright but cold morning here in Maine, after a couple of days of monsoons! My official raingauge (a Tupperware container!) registered 3 inches of rain over the 24 hours! No wonder I have a river in the basement!

I am off to a craft fair in a bit, hoping to make lots of money for donations to rescues. Pray for generous patrons, please!

    And, finally, but never least...

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ALEX!

    Belated Happy Birthday Nancy

Marg - good to see you up bright and early as you always used to be. It's sunny and warmer here today and we shall have another good day's racing from Cheltenham. Everyone is still buzzing from Spot Thedifference's win yesterday. Oh, and Michael Dickinson was on the phone yesterday (not to me, obviously) saying how he will still enjoy being involved with horses - they'll just be other people's. Hope you all have a fine weekend and let all the horses come home safe and sound.

    Good Morning, FOB's!

Happy Birthday, Alex! You are having an amazing life journey and I wish you all the best things life can send your way. Thank you for your infinite patience and stamina in maintaining this board and your work.

It is cold here in Chester County, but the sun is really trying very hard to break thru the clouds. As long as there is sunshine, the cold is easier to handle.

PRAYERS FOR McDYNAMO, and for all brave horses who put hooves to track this weekend - and every day!

    McDynamo makes title run
    By JOE CLANCY

While visiting his mother in South Carolina recently, Jody Petty watched a video of McDynamo's victory in the 2007 Breeders' Cup Grand National. As just a fan, the horse's jockey marveled at what he saw.

"I got cold chills - and I know what happened," he said. "Riding him, it's an easy feeling. Watching him, it looks more powerful, more impressive. I didn't get to ride him at the beginning of his career, but I appreciated him then. Now that I get to sit on him, I appreciate him that much more."

The best American steeplechaser of the decade and perhaps longer, McDynamo tops a field of eight in the Grade 1 Colonial Cup Sunday at Springdale Race Course in Camden, S.C. The $150,000 race will decide the steeplechase Eclipse Award and close the 2007 National Steeplechase Association season. Post time for the Cup is approximately 3 p.m. as the fifth race of seven on a card that starts at 12:30 p.m. There is no betting, but there will be plenty of drama.

The Eclipse winner in 2003, 2005, and 2006, McDynamo can join Flatterer and Lonesome Glory as the only horses to win four steeplechase championships. The 10-year-old son of Dynaformer ran away with the Breeders' Cup Grand National (his fifth consecutive win in that Grade 1) Oct. 20 to jump into the title picture with $187,500 earned this year.

At 2 3/4 miles and 17 fences on a fast, flat course, the Colonial Cup offers a unique test with a rare combination of a quick pace, lots of jumping and a demanding distance.

"It's extraordinarily difficult to win," said McDynamo's trainer, Sanna Hendriks. "You have to have speed, be a really good jumper, and have enough stamina to go that far."

Owned by Michael Moran, McDynamo blends all three like no other horse. He won the 2003 Colonial Cup in what was then a record 5:05.40, led at every call in 2005, and outran a game Mon Villez to take the 2006 running by a length. Jumping really matters in the race, which has been won by Hall of Famers Lonesome Glory, Flatterer, Zaccio, and Cafe Prince.

"It's a true jumpers' race," said Petty. "There are a lot of fences, they're a little bit bigger, and you're not going to miss too many and still be in it at the end. You get running flat out, then fences really matter even more. Lose a length at a fence and it could cost you the race."

As one of only two horses in the race to start over Springdale's natural hedge fences, which are slightly larger than the standard National Fence used in most races, McDynamo holds a decided advantage.

Good Night Shirt, the other Eclipse contender, makes his Colonial Cup debut but packs plenty of ability with two Grade 1 wins, a second, and a fourth (after challenging McDynamo) in the Breeders' Cup. The horses split two meetings this year with Good Night Shirt winning the three-mile Grade 1 Iroquois in May for owner Sonny Via and trainer Jack Fisher. Regular jockey Willie Dowling will be aboard the 6-year-old, who has earned $224,163 this year and can set a single-season earnings record with a win.

"McDynamo at Far Hills was simply spectacular," Fisher said. "The firm ground at Camden will give us some hope where we had none at Far Hills.

"We will try the same tactics as we did there. I don't know what else to do. We freshened him up after Far Hills and he's been doing good."

Happy Birthday. I hope you enjoy your time in Texas. Thanks for allowing us to use this website. I really appreciate the opportunity to be involved in such a worthwhile cause. Thanks again.

Have a wonderful birthday Alex. Go to a nice waterfront restaurant and have a nice meal.
If we were there, we would SURELY help you celebrate. Pretend we are, and have a drink 'with us' to celebrate all that has happened here.

I did not know about S311 status until minutes ago. (12:10PM mountain time). Another miracle here. I am convinced. Knees are weak.

    Off to lite candles.

Good day everybody - still excited over S 311 getting to the calendar - can't wait to watch the voting on TV.

Just talked to a friend on the phone, a horse lover who used to be in charge of the horses at the Farm in the Zoo at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo. I mentioned about calling the legislators re HS, and he said, "But that all stopped recently, didn't it; I thought there is no more horse slaughter now," and I explained the actual situation re export, and he was horrified; had absolutely had no idea. He had seen the press about Cavel closing and thought that was all there was to it, it was over. OY!!! I am amazed that he didn't know it is still going on, only not within the US.

We must raise public awareness about export.

Hope everybody has a good day/weekend. Especially hoping for safe racing for all involved. PLEASE!

Want to recommend a DB thread re how horses (and other critters) deal with death. Very upbeat, spiritual, and enlightening IMO. Check it out:

    Happy Birthday unklealexbrown

Hope all you birthday wishes come true. My wish for your birthday is that all slauhhter will be abolished forever, as will the transport of horses for sale for slaughter.

I wish for safe tracks throughout the world. I wish for beautiful homes with green pastures and warm stalls filled with fragrant straw, hay, water and good food for all horses, and for those who have decided to leave gainful employment behind. I wish that no foal will be born without a predestined loving home. I wish that all horses will have all the care that is needed and the best medicine possible will be available to all. I wish that no horse will ever be subjected to neglect, and that no horse will ever suffer again.

I hope that sometime today when you least expect it, you'll feel warm breath, hear a soft nicker, and feel the presence of the amazing Spirit horse who with you, brought us all together.

    Many more, Dear Alex

Cheers and love from your fren

We're sitting here drinking beer and listening to Scottish music wondering -- did Evening Attire run today, did he win? He's a wonderful horse as was his sire.

I was always a big fan of Better Talk Now's sire, Talkin Man. When my husband and I were dating, he wrote a poem for me about Talkin Man and it was published in The Thoroughbred Times -- sealed the deal for me and we were married a few months later.

    MOSAIC

    things that are lasting
    have their own patina
a sort of glowing invisible scaffolding

there is not a soul that arrives at this site
that has not contributed to my learning
and happiness and well spring of gratefulness
secondly, everyone has a part in this mystery.
.everyone;s actions multiply and mean that
    his legacy continues to flower
    a year into his loss
    at the same time
    i hear many share
    a deep understanding
    of an inner landscape
that barbaro seemed to know a lot about
    with out even trying

    i will never grow used
    to his loss
    but i craft to develop
    atht
    ability to forgive and embrace
    faith and hope
    knowing
he will return in some form
..in the glory of meeting the times
his celestial mandate and intentions a pure patina

    secretariat;s shadow
    imprinted on his back
    the weaving of artful giving..
    simple love yet complicated
    by circumstance and perspectives

    thank you
    everyone
for all the love you weave
    by showing up .
    .
and holding some kind of vibrant web
    that glimmers both within
    of our tears and laughter

the annoyance of calling congressional aids
    endlessly
    at times
these strangers at the other end of the phone
    too self important and ignorant
to understand the rush of deep
    care and love
    we carry
and so many pour out daily
    in letters cards and conversation
    perhaps
there is a way to commit to one call a week
    if you feel discouraged
    because let me tell you

it is a dark path to this victory and the entrenched forces
that are so corrupted by conveniences
and the base line of a chanting disposable society
oh we cant stop slaughter where will the excess horses go
    song
and wont this open up more abandonments and Abuses ..
    hey what happened to making
    the NEW INFRASTRUCTURES
needed to absorb finding revenue .just like
when we go adopt a pet ..we pay a fee
not too sure why anyone owning a horse couldnt conceive of a gentler
    way to pass
their animal to the other side

but this touches on a deeper issue
    that i found again
    walking those halls
filled with ghosts of empty promises betrayals
    scathing songs disappointments..
that there are consequences to every little and big action..even
    thoughts..

    therefore
my visit to the senate chambers revealed
    once again
that there are magnificent folks hearing us
and other pertinent and related issues
    that are being explored
because of your out reach to the congress.
.love a congress woman or man..to bits
    ahhhhahaa
many who vacation in their lives
    and in the congress on
    on our time and money
this moral corrosion and lack off imagination
needs a lot of love and bridge building

if you could have heard and seen daryl; working the halls and the
    cafeteria
    for hours and days
devoted to his inner understanding of the voices
he hears from horse on earth and above

where everything starts tiny..in a breath a smile ..a shared story..
    important
    happens
..never on the voting floor but in the coffee taken the chocolate
    shared.
you might fall to your knees with thanks
    for dayrl;s mighty presence
and time consuming art of sealing a deal
    i believe
    the horses feel a person's enlightenment..and care
    just as children do

i wanted to thank the senator from louisiana
    senator L--
to shower her with love and appreciation
for introducing our bill onto the floor
    soon for a vote
..when they return from their overly long holiday.
    .to say the least

yes many offices noted the drop in our calls
so hpw to call on your schedule and if you are discouraged..
flash onto those long nights he was in that small stall..

and note your own vital importance in this story

it is a compelling one and not a second to waste
    bless each one of you
.for all the thigns you do in your lives to
    support barbaro's great heart
and soul into living proof that
we not only can go on
but we will never let his dreams go
it was all there in his running and
his trust and his love for life
    ..in surround techni color
    ..
    love is a verb
    an action word
so many have flowered this garden then
    you
in your many unique ways have given to the whoel fabric
a dazzling thread of thick gold ..
    sun pieces
reflecting off deep velvet night sky
have made possible new ;lives for beaten
    injured thrown away horses
    it is beyond belief

    but once again,\
following your dream and your inner voice
may well arc and match the fierce trust Barbaro had
    in humans
especially those who took care of him from infancy

i dont worry about the end result
i just keep walking in that direction
    ..what ever it takes
    his eyes luminous before me
as you have often read me describing him
and his curiosity about every little thing around him

    his resilience and his intelligence
    his seeming understanding
    that he ws mortally wounded
    he needed help to survive

i rejoice in the many deeds
and accomplishments of the fans of barbaro
    and for example
take the arrival of sherman into mary s and her life
a sterling conversion of deep grief
..and disappointment in the human species
    to joy and purpose
conjecture and assumption on my part
    but pure glory
as the adoption of mr wahington by shelley in honor of george
    washington
    to read their story -----

    defining the goodness
of a soul;s voyage and ability to move forward
as HE move across the sky

i honor the care and love of so many
    and the invisible many
i never heard about but feel
    deeds unspoken of
    and seen from above

..the whole incident of the dear horse
that got stuck in the water tub
..what a dance to extract that dear horse from his predicament

the trust and current flourishes with this intentionality
    that sets up
    so many effects anf glory
i thank many of the senators who will be voting for the passage
    of the anti slaughter bill
    THE Barbaro bill

    should you feel weary now
    stop over
let me heat up some warm cider
and spread out maryland scones heavy with.butter and honey
look at the stars from my roof and smell the sea air
    the canadian geese sleep now
    resitng for the big commute
and the woods next to me breathes deeply
..as each tree is safe forever
no one can build next door.
by some miracle we bought the land from darth vader..
and it is saved for ever
    another barbaro effect

i think of dear skyler and the wrist bands
she made so may months agp
    we ate em all up

    the angel dust
points to the opportunity to continue
to save horses through many ways
    including this legislation
    already years in the making
defines the courage and heart he had
    and i need
each one of you contributes to this whole
    fabric
    a truth
    beyond measure
    worth like the cloth of
night comes then dawn and the sun
the sense that windows and doors are opening continually
in this safekeeping of his legacy
    breath- taking and vibrant
brown velvet rounded huge 'back mucles
rippling and feet secure in flight
    ever grateful
    for all that the fobs
    layer upon layer
blessing daryl's inner strength and resolve
.as all the call list leaders
    from across the country
that post for hours around the clock
to stir us to the task
that needs our life to be woven firmly
in place over and over again.
    till it is finally done
    many take on
to carry huge loads of this journey
    lending each other
a hand like edgar leaning as a fourth leg
    into barbaro
    that awful day
the grooms rushing to the wound then back to the barn
    in total heatbreak
    disarray and empty blankets stored
    forever
    away..

    but brought back
    to stroke and marvel at
    that other day
    when all went golden right
and we saw for our very selves
    what greatness could be like
in this great shaft of light
    splashing ..splashing..
    splashing delight

    Alex,
While belated, please accept my wishes that your birthday be happy, full of joy and you continue to be blessed. May the coming year bring you peace and happiness. If I may be a little presumptious, I wish for your birthday gift the end of the murder of our Horses and that all of Them have loving homes.

    Harriette,
Please take care and do what you need to in order to get better. We need you dear Sister. Barbaro has chosen you to enlighten us with the wisdom of the Grandfathers. My prayers and love are heading your way.

    Everyone,
Thank you for all the support last week. I felt your support and love, and the guidance and love of a certain Bay Horse.

Now, it's time to keep going. We're getting closer every day to ending slaughter and needing a home for our Horses. The Barbaro Bunk and Breakfast is on its way to reality. We already have over $600 pledged and saved towards the BB&B. I urge every FOB who hasn't yet to set aside $1 each week towards building the BB&B; NOT to say that this endeavor is more important than any of our other United Causes, it is not, but in addition to the Causes. We MUST support the Horses after we save them.

Please bring your ideas and skills. We need to get started organizing. We need experts in law and organization start up/set up first and foremost. We need to decide next on two important things: what to actually name the BB&B (we have several excellent suggestions on the DB) and where the BB&B will actually be located.

With the love for one special Horse we came together. For the love of ALL Horses we continue our battles.

    No Horse left behind.

    Hi everyone!

First of all the score from the Hoosier Park Paddock Sale is: US:5 - killers:0. It was a very busy day for me. Friends of Ferdinand took in 4 horses Homestretch took in one. We arrived with 2 horses already pre-arranged - Mynard Road and Storm Cellar. Both horses have leads on adoptions already. Mynard settled-in to his new stall like a champ. Stormy was a bit collicky last night. He is fine today.

The third horse is from an owner who approached us before the sale, who begged us - please please please - The FFI Directors were there and we all stepped aside, poked our toes in the dirt, discussed the situation and decided we'd all put crowbars in our wallets again and support this horse. She is a 3 year-old filly named Jessica's Win. So off I went arranging her transport and notifying her foster home. She is staying this week in Exceller Funds Carson City Kids new stall in his adoptive home. She will catch a ride in the trailer next weekend that goes to pick-up Carson and bring him home, and she will have his old stall in his foster home. Before I loaded her on the trailer, I gave her a pat and told her she had some big shoes to fill.

The fouth horse is Highway Hero, a beautiful grey. He came through the auction and I know his owner/trainer well. I knew Highway would be offered for donation. His foster home is in love. He does have an ankle with some heat and swelling. I am arranging to have the vet out next week to examine him, and give us a treatment plan for him. Once he is cleared by our vet, he will be made available for adoption.

Thank You FOBs. Together, we saved some lives yesterday!

Nice job by the Friends of Ferdinand and Homestretch yesterday. I like to see the rescues work with the trainers/owners as much as possible. Mountain View Rescue also took in three thoroughbreds recently working in that fashion. I'd like to see more of that in the future.

Update on The Tin Man, posted by an FOB on Forum!

Update from Nov 17th from "Honu" who, I believe, is part of the Mandella barn (as posted to Thoroughbred Champions Forum):

    Hey everyone,
Sorry its been a little longer than usual, my computer crashed so Ive been dealing with that .
Tinny is doing good , the swelling in his hurt leg is looking alot better and he now gets to have the bandages off for about 15 to 20 mins a day to let his leg air out . We are still icing him 3 times a day and he is getting trentol for his feet twice a day and they seem to be holding sway , some mornings there is just a bit of heat but nothing to be alarmed about at this point.
Someone sent him a card the other day with a check enclosed for 20$ for carrots and mints which is just the cutest damn thing I have ever seen. We are all still amazed and feeling blessed for the outpouring of love for him.
Yesterday I pulled his halter back and was scratching behind his ears and his eyes went to half mast , he was so calm and relaxed , I kissed him bellow his eye about three times , as I couldnt help myself he was just so calm . I really think above anything he enjoys the scratches the most , we dont give him many treats because we dont want him to get too excited , and as always Richard touches and pets him more than once a morning , the old horse just seems to know how sorry he is that this all happend because he always hugs him with his head . Thanks again folks for everything , we so much appriciate your cards and well wishes , if you want to send him anything just send it to the Santa Anita stable office c/o Richard Mandella and they will bring it to the barn .
Thanks again and Im sorry I was late with the update .

I posted about his on the forum, but it hasnt really garnered much attention. I think it is awful and tragic. My heart goes out to her family and friends and the connections of the horse. I am sure the riding community in and around Ocala are so shocked today at this sad outcome.

Woman, Horse Killed During Jump At Riding Event

MARION COUNTY, Fla. -- A 21-year-old woman was killed when her horse stumbled on a jump at a riding event and crushed her on Saturday.

Eleanor Brennan, 21, of Esmont, Virginia, was attending the 2007 Horse Trials, an international horse event, at the Florida Horse Park, a statement from the Marion County Sheriff's Office said.

Brennan was riding an 11-year-old male named Mister Barnabus. The horse struck a gate during the event, tumbled onto his neck and landed on Brennan, the statement said.

The horse died instantly, and Brennan died a short time later at a hospital, the statement said.

Marion County Fire Rescue spokeswoman Heather Danenhower said Brennan had head and chest injuries.

Tom Warriner, chairman of Florida Horse Park, said event officials plan to review tapes to determine what caused the fall.

Brennan was a British citizen who split time between the United Kingdom and Virginia, the Ocala Star-Banner reported. She was completing in the horse park's three-day event.

Brennan's body was taken to the Leesburg Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

A necropsy of the horse will be conducted at the University of Florida.

Happy belated birthday to Alex and Nancy. Hope you both had great days.

    Alex,

No HRTV or TVG? I only get TVG anyway and Gary Stevens went to HRTV or so I read somewhere. Is Gary Stevens still going to endorse your book?
That's really so neat! Another station that shows interesting shows on horses is RFD. They show more about how to take care of horses, trailing riding, rodeos and even mules and donkeys. I really enjoy it!

Looking forward to some good reading there when you get your book published.

Good rest of week-end wishes to all.

Bright Nickel's race was no surprise. He's been slow at breaking from the gate and this really wasn't his distance. We just needed to get a race in him for experience. His jockey came back laughing and said "He's soooo green"! LOL

Hi Shelley: Oh well, poor baby, he'll get them next time. As long as he came back okay that's the main thing. At least the jockey seemed to have a good time.

I also wanted to ask how Mr. Boxcar is doing, hope he is on the mend. The injury he has, is that the cannon bone? The reason I'm asking is I just found out this week that my horse with the other stable Karakorum Elektra fractured her cannon bone and is laid up for seven months. She had pins put in her leg. I'm so concerned about her and I'm very annoyed with them. They've been running her pretty frequently and I was hoping they were going to give her a rest. She apparently hurt herself while breezing. I just hope she can come back from this. The guy I spoke to didn't seem that concerned. He's telling me, "oh she's a stakes horse that's where she'll be running next year" I'm concerned about her running again at all, never mind in a stakes race. I don't want to see her, god forbid, injure herself in a race. I really don't like this stable. I have no imput at all in what they do with the horses.

Anyway, hope all is well otherwise and give Mr. Boxcar and Bright Nickel some carrots for me.

Posted by: lorraine, staten island NY at November 18, 2007 11:23 PM

Okay, Bright Nickel, you've had a race and now you know what to do. You'll get 'em next time! Mostly, I'm just glad you're home safe.

Lorraine, I am heartsick about Elektra! Please keep us up to date on her. I hope she can change stables.

Christian, McDynamo faded and finished 6th. Not like him. Then again, he had a tough race just last month.

    Lorraine,

A fracture of the cannonbone is not uncommon and is usually not career ending. There are several types of treatment. After careful consideration I decided to not do the screws. But that was a personal decision and it is a common treatment for this injury. Actually, screws were the recommendation of Dean Richardson. You may not like this stable but it doesn't seem that they've done anything wrong. And seven months is not unrealistic.

Boxcar is at NJ Equine under the care of Dr. Scott Palmer and his goal is for Boxy (touch wood) to return to racing as a four year old in the spring. Time will tell.

Unfortunately, one of the drawbacks of being a part of a syndicate is not having the ability to make personal choices. Of course, one of the advantages is not having to shoulder these difficult decisions on your own. The other advantage is the difference in the vet bills!! LOL

    Hello Barbaro,

We had a light drizzle/driving sleet type of weather today and I just had to go up and tuck my Montego in tonight...and you were there.

First of all, I grabbed the small bucket of Stud Muffins out of my trunk so that I could treat Montego with two of them and adorable Nipper with two of them...there were only three! Honey....(it's okay Honey. I hope you enjoyed your Stud Muffin...)

Then, I walked over to Nipper's paddock and hanging on his gate was a new halter/lead rope set...in Lael colors! I just smiled when I saw them! Blue and green...what a gorgeous sight.

I groomed Montego and led her to her stall. The hay was set on top of the grain bucket...I have never seen a flake of hay be tossed so quickly in my life!

She grabbed hold of that hay and threw it into the hay bin and quickly dug into the grain. Ah yes, she knows what she likes!

Then, you appeared again while I was talking to Al. He informed me that four retired racehorses will be arriving at the stable on Thursday. He said that one is very tall...He also mentioned that I was going to love them! (Well, of course...)

Honey, your Mommy and Daddy had some decisions to make concerning your training and care. While Montego will not live a life in the limelight, I still have to make decisions for her care and future.

When I was at the grocery store, I saw Jill, Montego's first Mommy. Honey, while we were standing at the entrance of the store, shopping carts in front of us and her frozen peas and Lucky Charms cereal peeking out over the top of the bag, I probably confirmed her suspicions that I am Nuts! But, I did it out of love...for Montego.

I asked her if she would consider asking her husband if they would consider, in the event that something happens to me, to take Montego back home with them.

Honey, I hope she saw that I am trying to be responsible and do what is best for Montego. My husband wouldn't know what to do with Montego should something happen.

It would be very difficult to place a horse, much less in a home that I KNOW loves her and adores her. We never want to think of our ending days, but when there are little ones, we must.

Jill said that she wanted to cry...She also said that Jason would say "yes" but that she would ask him. Honey, Montego will forever be happy and loved... I am so grateful for this feeling of contentment.

Honey, I am going to have Montego try doing her own Moneigh paintings for her first family as Christmas gifts. I'm hoping to frame them with a clip of her mane or tail wrapped in ribbon.

I've asked Morgan, the eleven year old in my life, if she wants to help...please wish us luck! I've told Al that if he sees Montego with a purple stain on her nose, it was just Morgan, Montego and I making Christmas crafts!

Well, should we get you to bed? I have a couple of other things to do before going to bed myself so let's grab your blanket and pull it up high on your neck.

We'll fluff the folds perfectly for nuzzling and we'll also make sure that your grain isn't covered up with any hay...I hear you horses don't like that!

Your Dream Angels are bundled up and patting the ground next to them, inviting you to lay beside them.

Dream sweet dreams Honey. Amongst the dreary darkness of the Minnesota night, a stable shelters the horses that complete their parent's hearts...my Montego slumbers among them. Please grace them with your presence and gain comfort in their warmth. Cuddle up Honey...make yourself at home. You were there with me today. Stay with my Montego tonight.

I love you Honey. I never met you, but I miss you. Every antic that Montego pulls, I think of you... Good night. XXOOxxoxoo

    Strategy for Monday November 19

While everyone is very excited to hear the S311 has been put on the calendar, it is also important to remember that this is only procedural. It does not change any of our strategy yet. We must still call the people we’ve been asked to target because they will make the difference in whether we have enough support to pass the bill. Letters of support from senators who would rather not cosponsor but will vote for our legislation, have been requested. They should be sent to Senator Landrieu’s office.

Remember….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico.

“It would be greedy to ask him to do more. He has been so good to everybody that I wouldn’t want anything to happen to him.”
McDynamo has a wonderful and caring owner. I pray for someone like that for all the horses that run.

Please keep calling the Senators!!! If you have a list of previous FOBs in your e-mail address books, whom you have not seen here in quite awhile, perhaps it would be good to contact them and ask them to please return to the board. There's a big-un a comin'! We must rally the troops.

In loving memory of our Beloved touchstone, our Champion, in who's name we gather...From the first chapter of ONLY A MOMENT BEFORE THE WIND:

The Young Prince blinked as the clear bright light met his eyes. Only a moment before, he was in a dimly lit place, filled with the light of love, but clouded by a greying cover of sadness.

Only a moment before, he had been in great pain. As an injured athlete, he had known pain, but never the likes of which he had endured since just before this morning's dawn. It was growing...white hot and horrible! Around him were the familiar sights and sounds of the hospital, a place that he had known as "home" for so long. He felt no fear, only confusion. He was usually confident that the people would know what to do...but, oh...the pain!

In spite of the white-hot-horror, he also felt the comforting touch of the gentle people who loved and cared for him. Today he tasted tears in their kisses, and he wondered...but only for a moment, for the cloud thickened, and covered them all. Their forms faded, then everyone was gone.

Suddenly, there was only clear bright light. It was true light, with crystalline essence of every prismatic element. All colors at once, so pure, so vibrant that he blinked at the stark contrast to where he had been, and what he had seen, only a moment before.

He felt a quickening in his body. He was more alive than ever...and his feet didn't hurt anymore. So, he began to run. He outran even the brightness. He was free! His companion was the wind itself, or so it seemed, for as he ran, he knew he wasn't alone.

His feet flew over soft grass, hardly touching the turf. He had been a champion undefeated runner, with a heart that loved to win. This time, however, he wasn't running for the win. This time he ran for joy, with no end to it. There would be no finish line. The horizon went on forever, and he would reach it....

Dear FOB Frens, Let us remember that we are his voice. Let us remember that the voiceless ones need us.

Let us go forward in strength, courage and victory. We MUST end the transport of the beauties to the horror of slaughter. It is the Love that makes the difference. We have the Love. We have been brought here to do this, by our love for BARBARO.

    Let's Ride!

    Laurie H.,

You had me in tears tonight. Just beautiful.

    Toby is back!!!

Laurie H, your tuck-in tonight moved me to tears. Too few people take the responsibility to ensure the well-being of their animals, should anything happen. That said, I hope you and Montego grow old and gray together.

    Martita...lessons from Persia...
sobering, humbling, and provoking thought and emotion both. The one thing I am sure of is that we are all connected, even though the ways and whys are still mysterious. We really cannot escape that truth, nor should we even try. Thanks for reminding us, in a way that only you can.

Laurie H...what I will call your "lessons from Minnesota" tonight...another reminder of love, responsibility, and connections to the here and now, and yet to the long term. Thank you for your kind heart which is always revealed in what you write.

Hiya, FsOB! Well, it's Monday of a marathon week, tonight I start cooking components of Thanksgiving's feast. But first things first, a belated happy birthday to our great guru, Alex Brown! I was cheered this AM to see that Barb M's husband is recuperating nicely from his cardiac surgery. And fabulous news that S-311 is apparently on the calendar for a vote. Wishing everyone a safe and productive week. Peace, RMH

    Good Monday morning FOBs,

We're at the beginning of a holiday week and I'm sure everyone has their list of things to do before the big day. But please let's remember to take the little bit of time required to make our contacts with Congress re: S.311 and H.R.503. We want to push for enough "yes" votes to get the legislation passed.

My prayers for all in need.
