Barbaro Updates: 427

updates are now here.

Update 2702: Smart Enough won one of the two stakes races at Churchill Downs this afternoon. This Fair Hill trainee appeared a little quiet in the paddock, but not on the racetrack. He broke a little slowly, but when he assumed the lead nothing was going to catch him. He won very comfortably. The other stakes race went off without incident, with a win for Adena Farms and Bobby Frankel. All in all two good stakes races, and a short but chilly afternoon spent at the races.

A tribute to a dual champion.

Update 2701: A nice day off today, along with the clock change it seemed like hours of nothingness! I went over to Trackside, which is a training center owned by Churchill Downs. I had breakfast there with my Louisville hosts, who work at Trackside. This afternoon we are going over to the races at Churchill, hopefully for some incident-free racing. Fair Hill has a runner in one of the stakes, the very speedy Smart Enough.

Update 2700: An update on The Tin Man, with pictures, from Saturday: Our Visit with the Tin Man

Update 2699: Lava Man finished sixth yesterday in a race that was a drop in class for him. He is now being sent to a farm for some "R and R": Bold Chieftain Conquers Cal Cup Classic; Lava Man 6th Again

"He definitely will be sent to the farm," O'Neill said. "He ran a good race and he gave us a flicker of that acceleration there ... He just kind of flattened out there the last little bit.

"We'll do all the proper diagnostics to make sure while he's off, we're doing what we should. Right now, he's a sound horse. He might be a little deflated, energy wise, from such a long campaign. But knock on wood, he's sound. I feel I'm sending a horse to the farm that's sound but a little bit tired."

Update 2698: A lovely afternoon to watch racing at Churchill Downs. I went over for the two stakes races and the final race, an allowance race. The first stakes race was Sun King's final race, and he went off the favorite. He was a well beaten second, and is now retired to stud. The race was marred by the breakdown of Casino Evil. The second stake, The Chilukki (who my host Bob Hatfield has ridden and who kicked Bob) was won by a Steve Asmussen trainee, Rolling Sea. She won easily. Steve Asmussen also had one in the last race, it trailed the field.

Update 2697: High winds cancel live racing at Aqueduct and Suffolk Downs today: Aqueduct, Suffolk Cancel Live Racing Nov. 3.

Update 2696: A positive report on The Tin Man: The Tin Man "doing real well".

Update 2695: A chilly and dark morning this morning at Churchill Downs. We only had six sets to ride today, so it was a short morning. Four sets before the break, in the dark, and two sets after the break. All the horses I rode went nicely, just a pretty straightforward morning to end the week. Course the track itself was chaotic, but that is standard here I guess. We have a couple of runners this afternoon, so I might walk over and watch for an hour or two. There are also a couple of graded stakes later in the day. Its also noteworthy to mention Lava Man is running in a CA bred stakes in California later today.

Update 2694: Given the lack of decent older horses running in the US I had been wondering how the tongue-wagging Premium Tap was going, and here it is: Premium Tap Wins Again in Saudi Arabia.

Off to work at Churchill!

Good morning, sweet Barbaro at Heaven's Gate Farm...please give a sweet horsie kiss to my Princess Maizie Lee and tell her how much Seamus and I miss her!

Congratulations to Premium Tap - I fell in love with him the first time I saw him race with his tongue flapping around...I was afraid it would flap up and give him a black eye - LOL! I wish him a safe career and perfect health...

Hi, FOB's!

###
Alex, that pic of Premium Tap is gorgeous...took my breath away. Thanks for posting the article. Am glad to read that he is blowing the competition away.

###
To those who posted/e-mailed me about Fantasy, thank you for your love and support. I am so thankful to have found this board and the famblee. It was a very intense time - and I still maintain to those pro-slaughter people that euthanization is far more humane. Even with the events of yesterday, once the drugs worked, it was peaceful - so very peaceful. The 2 days of spiritual "prep work" made for an easier time for both of us. She knew exactly what she was doing when she shed her body.

You are all the greatest.

Good Morning Family,

CathyMcNY asked last night in the final post of the day if there was some way to help "Ask the Lord." A Horse who's won over $700K and has now fallen to the $5K claiming ranks as a 10 year old. Please take a second to read Cathy's post about a Horse Alex mentioned seeing race yesterday.

The answer to Cathy's question can be a resounding yes! he can be well taken care of. BUT, we can't give that answer yet (bear with me a second folks please). Why can't we give that answer? Because we aren't done with the Barbaro Bunk & Breakfast!

My tiny little brain thinks we could have a fund, with its funds coming from guest fees and donations, to go to the races and claim a Horse like "Ask the Lord!" and bring that Horse home.

Once home at the BB&B, the Horse is forever safe and well taken care of. Part of our advertising could be something like "Come see the Horses you have saved." Give every guest a personal stake in the place!

Harriette and Cal, since you two started this whole BB&B idea, you're input I especially ask for. It is so wonderful to see you two here. And Cal, whatever your reasons for becoming Seabee, I'm glad you're back. To me, it doesn't matter what caused you to "change," it's all water under the bridge. Welcome Home to your family.

NO Horse left behind.

Posted by: Sophie's Lee at November 3, 2007 1:12 PM

Lee,

Seabee is derived from the first initial from my first and middle name (C & B), and also because I am in charge of the department that manufactures parts for the Navy's Nuclear Subs. So I thought Seabee would be a nice fit.
You give me way too much credit, I believe my involvement in the idea was limited to my offer to be the groundskeeper. Althougth I've become very skilled at stall mucking, since I've started leasing Zoey.

Posted by: Cal / Seabee or what's him name? at November 3, 2007 2:06 PM

Cal,
Just say thank you for the credit! LOL I was wondering about the Seabee, thanks for explaining; makes sense to me!

I give you credit as it was you and Harriette who were going back and forth the most that wonderful day. I wish I could remember who else was involved too. You all deserve credit.

How is that beautiful Zoe? Does your wife still think you two are "just friends?" She is a beautiful Horse Cal. I know she loves you.

No Horse left behind.

###I too looked up Ask The Lord and then thought about Brave Miner. Got so depressed I didn't post about doing something, but I agree. These wonderful souls need long and happy retirements. I don't have a place to house more than the one I have--and we don't have pasture here in the Mojave Desert--but there are options for folks like me, sponsoring, fostering (from afar), etc.

###Cal, let me tell you this: Mucking a stall is like riding a bicycle. Once you "get it," you never lose it. I hadn't mucked a stall in 25 years when I got Huey nearly 10 years ago. Picked up the fork and started mucking like it had been "yesterday."

Last chance today/tomorrow for winning a beautiful Barbaro throw in a fundraiser for Horse Feathers, OK. This was created from a Barbara Livingston photo and it is gorgeous, not to mention that it will help a horse rescue! I would love to win it, but don't mind a little competition... :)

Especially thinking of The Tin Man today, as well as all the lesser known horses in need. Safe racing to all those in action this weekend.

Lee,
You're asking alot from this tired old man's mind. I believe, besides Harriette and myself, Verna, Renee A., and a few others I can't recall, were involved that day.
But I might add, for the amount of effort you've put into this so far, you might want to consider calling it Sophie's Bed & Breakfast. Great job!! Great Cheerleading!! But PLEASE save the Pom Pom's for someone else. LOL
Thanks for your comment. about "ZoSo" (another word association, I'm a huge Led Zeppelin Fan)
Things are moving forward rather smoothly. (I say this because I can't get her to back up very easily)
I think my wife is starting to suspect something. She's hired a Private Detective for something. She spotted carrot stains on my collar. I had a hard time explaining my way out of that. I don't even like carrots.

Cal,
When my boyfriend first decided to move to the country in South Alabama and buy a horse, some chickens, one wild turkey rescue AND some goats~~I thought he had lost his dang mind. I then remembered how when I was a little girl pretending that I actually DID own a horse and barnyard animals to those who went to school with me. I lied. I lied through my teeth, trying to be a farmer's daughter, when in actuality I was an Air Force brat.

Anyway, back to my telling~ to make a long story longer...I used to stay outside with the horse, goats, chickens when I came home from work. I would come in smelling of multitudes of manure~ eau de parfum of chicken/goat/horse/dog/cat. Quite an aroma, as you well know. I would more than likely have pellets and/or slobber on my work uniform, hay in my hair, straw in my shoes, cat litter, dog poop on my shoes too, along with the invariable goatlicked hair, AND then: Louie would always say, "MUST you always smell like an animal?"

WELLL, Lemme tell ya! I would ALWAYS rather smell like an animal, than miss out, like I am now.
Our horse had to be put down, he sold all our goats, most of our chickens have either been killed by varmints or died of old age, one dog put down. Sad things. Cannot replace that horse, and goat smell. I miss these beyond repair. I would rather have the goat pellets, horse manure and their bodily functions of ANY sort allover me, than not to have EVER experienced them at all.

Sorry for the long post. I love that you and Zoey got it goin on! :0) Please squeeze that neck and kiss her for me.

Prayers for all creatures great and small

I would have never believed anyone who told me that mucking stall was relaxing. This is a whole new incredible world.
What kind of horse is Huey? Zoey is a Halflinger/Freisian mix.

Posted by: Cal / Seabee or what's his name? at November 3, 2007 3:19 PM

Dora, I know your post wasn't aimed at me, and my experience has been different than yours, but I agree- I'd always rather smell like I just left the barn than to have missed out!

WILLIE NELSON IS OUR FRIEND! Lookee here:

It’s Just Plain “Common Horse Sense”

It’s just plain “Common Horse Sense” that Americans don’t eat horses.

It’s just plain “Common Horse Sense” that horses are companion animals to people in the United States.

It’s just plain “Common Horse Sense” that horses are not bred in the United States for human consumption and are NOT considered food.

It’s just plain “Common Horse Sense” that horse slaughter is NOT humane euthanasia.

It’s just plain “Common Horse Sense” that banning the slaughter of horses will NOT increase abuse and neglect. In fact, horse slaughter promotes abuse and horse theft.

Killer buyers may try to change their name to ‘Order Buyers’ to make it appear that what they are doing is not so unpleasant, but it’s just plain “Common Horse Sense” that a killer of horses will always be known as a ‘killer buyer.’

Cross-posting from the HAHS Yahoo Group Site - from Gail Vacca who's affiliated with AWI.

Recently, one of our advocates had a chance to meet with Sen. Edwards campaign staff in NH. She was able to provide the Senator with a great deal of information on horse slaughter and the federal bills and has asked that the Senator sign a letter stating that he would support the bill should he become President.

Senator Edward's support would be HUGE should he eventually become President, and it would also be very helpful in putting pressure on other presidential candidates (ie..Sen. Clinton & Sen. Obama) so if you would please take a moment
to contact Sen. Edwards asking him to sign a letter of support for the AHSPA, it would be greatly appreciated!

Please contact Senator Edwards chief policy administrator, James Kvaal.

Thanks so much!

Please share this request with family and friends!!

Good Morning Barbaro

We love you, we miss you, and we are doing your tasks you left for us to do...Thank you for your inspiration, your will, your guidance and spirit.

Good Morning Family/Fans of Barbaro

Here at work today...wanting to say hello and hope everyone has a nice weekend.

Wondering with the Christmas holidays approaching, if we could start a Christmas of Love and raise money set aside (whether $100, less or more) to be given to all our rescues as a thank you, and Merry Christmas...maybe they could buy something out of our Christmas cheer.

I just know like many people here that the holidays with the gas prices and everything else going up....they are going to suffer. Where would we go to if we did not have the rescues....even $50.00 would be nice.

Just wondering.

Please call, fax, email....free horses are everywhere and the killer buyers are loving this. Noticed Joe put on his blog that Canada is paying lots more than Mexico.

You are all a fantastic, loving group. We are family, we are united, and yes we have different opinions, but that is what makes this world.

Love to all.

###
Cal,
Of course there was no offense. I, however, am keeping the pom poms; to make up for that though, I have promised I will not perform any high kicks. LOL

###
Verna, ReneeA and everyone,
Thank you for planting the seeds. We miss you too.

###
Dora,
I loved your story about growing up. I'm so glad to see you more often too friend.

###
Everyone,
An update on the BB&B fundraising. So far our reported estimate of money saved combined with what is pledged/going to be saved is just about $300.

Seem like a small amount? Well, it is, by itself; but! this is only with about 4 people reporting! There are at least 20 who have started saving, so you can see how the power of numbers adds up! All I ask of anyone is to commit to saving $1 a week. Not very much is it?

Please keep in mind that I don't consider this any more important than any of our other United Causes. I hope that we can all work towards the Barbaro Bunk&Breakfast along with the Causes.

The idea of the BB&B is to provide a home for all Horses forever. Please consider helping if you can.

Thank you family. Keep fighting the good fights. We WILL win!

The reason I've asked for this accounting is to show everyone how far we've come. Maybe this will also build more interest as we see the progress we're making.

We're getting there folks. I think it's time to start thinking about and debating some concrete ideas!

So come on over the DB to the Barbaro Bunk & Breakfast thread under the Horse Rescue Issues folder. All ideas are welcome and appreciated.

HORSE RACING HANK WESCH
Cal Cup could provide answers for Lava Man

UNION-TRIBUNE San Diego

November 3, 2007

Cal Cup XVIII

What's up with Lava Man?
Have time and 42 career starts taken their inevitable toll on the 6-year-old gelding who has dominated the California handicap division the past two years?

Has the clock struck midnight on the Cinderella story of the horse secured for $50,000 from a 2004 claiming race at Del Mar? For a horse who has won the Santa Anita Handicap and Hollywood Gold Cup twice each and the Pacific Classic once?

If those questions aren't fully answered, some insight should be provided when Lava Man takes on 10 rivals in today's $250,000 Classic, highlight of California Cup XVIII at Santa Anita.

A winning streak of five in the grandest races on the Southern California circuit was ended when Lava Man finished sixth as the 6-5 favorite in the Pacific Classic in August. Then Lava Man was sixth again in the Oak Tree Mile on turf Oct. 7 at Santa Anita.

Those results exploded any notions of last week's Breeders' Cup World Championships at Monmouth Park. But the competition in the Cal Cup – a Breeders' Cup restricted to state-breds – isn't anywhere near the world-class level on display last week. So Lava Man, career earner of more than $5.2 million and the most successful claim in racing history, is set to go.
Lava Man is 1-for-7 in races restricted to California-born runners. The lone victory was on grass. He finished second in his only prior Cal Cup start, the 2004 Classic.

Despite such facts, Lava Man will be the overwhelming focus of attention and figures to maintain the 7-5 opening-line favoritism bestowed by Santa Anita oddsmaker Jeff Tufts for today's 1 1/8-mile run on the Cushion Track artificial surface at Santa Anita.

Asked at Wednesday's post-position draw if there was pressure on Lava Man to show his old form, trainer Doug O'Neill took the weight on his own shoulders.

“The pressure is on me because I speak for Lava Man and I don't want to embarrass him,” O'Neill said. “He's sound and he should run a big race. Should he not, maybe it will be time to give him some time off.”

Bold Chieftain, a Northern California-based 4-year-old with six wins in 12 career starts and $315,775 in earnings, is the 5-1 second choice on the opening line. Celtic Dreamin, a 3-year-old gelding with five wins in six starts, is next at 8-1.

Closers
Jockey Garrett Gomez is two wins shy of Jerry Bailey's North American single-season record of 70 stakes victories. Gomez has six scheduled mounts on the Cal Cup program, including Celtic Dreamin in the Classic. . . . Edward Nahem, the owner/breeder of Bertrando, died Wednesday night at his Beverly Hills home of liver cancer. He was 64. Nahem, whose nom de course was the King Edward stable, will be represented by Bilo in the Classic. . . . Dodgers pitcher Brad Penny, a part-owner of Sprint entrant Excess Temptations, will have something more than baseball to talk about with new L.A. manager Joe Torre, who is also a racing fan and horse owner. . . . In keeping with the baseball theme, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is among the celebrities expected to be in Cal Cup attendance.

Jockeys refuse to ride; Aqueducts cancels racing

November 3, 2007
JAMAICA, New York (Ticker) - Aqueduct Racetrack canceled its horse racing card Saturday afternoon when jockeys refused to ride due to strong winds.

Winds gusts from the remnants of Hurricane Noel were measured up to 30 miles per hour, prompting the decision by jockeys not to ride.

MO HORSE HEROES - IN HONOR OF GEORGE WASHINGTON

TOMORROW IS THE DEADLINE TO CONTRIBUTE - PLEASE READ THIS THREAD!

Posted by: Nancy in CT at November 3, 2007 9:54 PM

MORE ON ROSEMARY'S WONDERFUL TRIBUTE TO GEORGE WASHINGTON AND RAISE $$$ FOR OUR MO HORSE HEROES...

She is planning "a simple letter to the London Times with a background history of the MO Horses and our honoring GW by contributing to them and sending a card of sympathy to the Jacksons who did breed him, even if it was in Ireland. This tragedy spans the big pond. We feel as strongly about Gorgeous George as do the Brits. We are making something positive about his tragic demise."

I think Rosemary has a MARVELOUS idea, as usual...the British press had some commentary that the Americans didn't give proper respect to the GREAT GEORGE WASHINGTON upon his tragic demise...while I think these comments were directed at the press, I hope WE can all dig deep (even $5. would be much appreciated) to make this tribute a success!

well, having computer problems. It is dying of old age. Have been told it would cost more to fix it than to buy another one. Gee. I may have to go uo to .50 cents for chief. No, I wouldnt get rid of the old mutt for any amount of money. ###I think it is great we are writing the paper over the pond expressing our sympathy for GW. What a beautiful horse he was. Good Lael breeding.

Hi Shelley: I was so sorry to hear about Mr. Boxcar. Glad he's doing better. We have to take care of our baby boys. That's sounds like a good option you have though. I will keep him in my prayers. I'm sure he will be back tearing up the track next year.

Give him lots of hugs and kisses.

Hay, FOB's!

###
Have a few minutes before going out to dinner with friends. Just wanted to say I'm so happy racing was canceled today at Aqueduct. Saner heads prevailed.

###
Equine Heaven, thank you for honoring Fantasy. I saw another rainbow this afternoon while driving home from teacher training. She promised me she would bring me something wonderful to thank me...when I "told" her that I didn't expect a reward, I felt her love just fill me and I burst into tears. At this point, nothing would surprise me. It was good being at New Bolton again even for such an intense reason. I've missed being there even to drop off food...:)

Prayers for Tin Man, Mr. Boxcar (handsome one...get better soon. I want to see you again.) and all those who need prayers and uplifting.

You are all the greatest.

LYNDA - I'm not sure where he finished, but it wasn't in the $$$. His people had said that if he didn't do well today they were going to look at a "long layoff"....HOW ABOUT RETIREMENT?

Posted by: Nancy in CT at November 4, 2007 1:03 AM

LYNDA - Lava Man was sixth...

Posted by: Nancy in CT at November 4, 2007 1:05 AM

Well, I am sure that they will do what is best for the horse. Too bad it would have been nice to see him win!

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri in SE TX at November 4, 2007 1:05 AM

He was running second for the first half of the race, but couldn't stand up to some late charges...it was very sad to hear the announcer say "He doesn't have it any more."

awwww how sad!!!!! :O(

I freely admit to being a big softie, but that made me cry :o(

Posted by: Nancy in CT at November 4, 2007 1:20 AM

###
LYNDA - this is interesting...according to pedigree query, Lava Man is the only horse to have won a G1 on three different surfaces! He has also run 42 races - isn't that quite a lot by today's standards?

Posted by: Nancy in CT at November 4, 2007 1:23 AM

We also have to remember that this year the tracks changed in California. That too may have hurt Lava Man. He just may not like it.That was why they tried him on turf at his last race.

Posted by: MJ at November 4, 2007 1:47 AM

Nancy in CT - I just posted about Casino Evil on the DB, didn't realize Alex had posted here in the updates. According to DRF, it says his trainer said he fractured some sesamoids and was in "guarded" condition. I saw the race and it looked like Calvin Borel pulled him up right away. I hope Alex can give us good news, didn't know he has one eye, poor guy. He is a 4 year old by Salt Lake who won his last 2 races.

Good luck to Sun King, what a warrior, the last few races he ran in were won by Curlin, Lawyer Ron, Invasor, Premium Tap and Corinthian.

Spent the day at Pure Thoughts, I have been there before but it is never the same, so many new stories. Got to see the 3 horses they saved at New Holland the day Inside Edition was there. All 3 are gaining weight, 2 probably need surgery on their knees, 1 is a grand-daughter of Seattle Slew who just ran at Penn National. They do a wonderful job with the horses helping them feel safe and get their dignity back.

Amanda
Where did you get your info about Casino Evil?

Posted by: cal at November 4, 2007 2:27 AM

Hay All,

I'm happy to report that THE GARBAGE MAN and SUN KING, two horses who's racing career I am interested in, both came in second in their races today.

The G-Man is a 9 year old gelding, still running in low lever claimers, and still coming in in the $ about half of the time. He doesn't have the fame and class of someone like our beloved TIN MAN, but he remains sound, and is running on "heart" too. God bless and keep THE GARBAGE MAN!

SUN KING is a son of CHARASMATIC, has been racing in very classy company, but has never hit "big" with high stakes wins, or even with the fans. But he is a beautiful boy, and loved by at least one (^-,^) FOB.

He is doing his very best to carry on the legacy of his great sire. Let's hope that he continues to do well, and remain safe and loved...and that his dad will make it home from Japan, alive and well, soon.

Two second places for the little known beauties...but NOW you, my Dear Frens DO know them.

Please find a place in your hearts for the G-Man and SUN KING. Your prayers and best wishes will find their way to them. We are BARBAROnation!

###Cal, log onto www.pedigrequery.com (gotta cut and paste since I don't speakuh da blue) and type in the name. Hit the "i in the circle" and you'll get information.

###Let us hope that Casino Evil's connections are able to see their way (no pun intended) to fixing him up.

###I just cannot watch horse racing anymore, but I am all for all the horse rescue and anti-slaughter and "good deeds" the FOBs are all about. I think George Washington's death and the cavalier way ESPN and TVG handled it just pushed me over the top.

The "old claimer" Alex wrote of yesterday at Churchill Downs and others like him deserve our efforts. I'll think of THEM (and weep, often) and work for their welfare.

Good Sunday Morning FsOB,
I hope everyone remembered to set their clocks back; I didn't and thought I was sleeping in! LOL
Anyway, I used the time to make a better accounting of the estimated funds for the BB&B, with 19 FsOB "reporting" their commitments we have an estimated total of $1,136! What power there is in numbers!

We are getting there quickly. We need more help though. So without further ado (or high kicks) I'm cheerleading again. Please, consider saving $1/week, a commitment of only $52/year to make this forever home for the Horses a reality. In honor of Barbaro, John Henry, Ruffian, George Washington, Seattle Slew and every Horse let's bring this beautiful place home.

I ask that we do this in addition to our other United Causes; not to replace any of them. Quoting Ro&Brady "Failure is NOT an option!"

No Horse left behind!

Happy last day of the weekend FOBs,

OtherLyn - thank you for letting us know about The Garbage Man and Sun King. I always appreciate the FOBs giving us good information about horses in general and those racing. I, too, will add my prayers to the rest for Casino Evil. I pray that we hear good news.

I did remember to push my clock back one hour and it is nice to have daylight earlier. I go to work in the dark every morning so I will appreciate that, but to have it get dark an hour earlier in the evening is not the price I'd like to pay. Nope - not liking that.

Speedy recovery to Casino Evil, Tin Man, Teuf, our girl Rags to Riches, and our "own" Mr Boxcar. May they all be spoiled by their caregivers and heal up faster than expected. If I forgot anyone there's more good wishes on the way.

Prayers needed for one of our human athletes.

Chad Johnson was injured and taken off the field by stretcher to an awaiting ambulance. He was hit by two Bills players, one making contact with the left side of his head(both made bodily contact-hard). He did not get back up. He does have movement in all extremities. He was hit earlier in the game and hit the ground very hard, face first and just wasn't the same after that hit and now this.

Get well soon Chad. Cincinnati and many others love you and want you back on the field as soon as possible.

Both the Bengal's and the Bill's were united in prayer for Chad. So nice to see them come together, that is sportsmanship!

Love to all,
Verna

He looked wonderful when he came in the paddock and went out there like a horse on a mission!! Even equibase mentioned how "improved" he was.

Back at the barn there was celebration and he got lots of kisses and peppermints. He seems to be fine and very proud. He wasn't even tired and was eating up when I left.

I was the one in shock as I saw him coming down the stretch.

###Samantha, Pine Island is my absolutely all-time favorite filly EVER--and the pictures of her with the trainer's daughter (Barbara Livingston took such WONDERFUL pictures "behind the scenes" of so many of our favorites) giving her treats and a kiss on her lovely long nose just makes me miss that lovely filly even more. I share with you thoughts of Pine Island every day, too. I was absolutely devastated when she fell. She was so very special.

Such an incredibly kind lovely girl. What a fantastic mama she would have made.

###Today I had a wonderful dressage lesson on Huey and once again experienced the joy of what nearly ALL retired race horses are capable of giving to new owners.

Huey is ALWAYS wonderful--he always tries VERY hard to do whatever is asked of him--but today he was especially obedient. I spent six years taking lessons from an assortment of know-nothings masking as dressage teachers but have finally found someone who knows what the heck she's doing--most refreshing, that--and Huey just SHINES under her guidance of (what passes for) my riding.

TBs are just so full of TRY--and they WANT to do well at whatever job they are given. Huey would go lebenty-seben times around the dressage court, and if I still didn't have him flexed or bent correctly, he would be happy to do lebenty-two more. He has a good heart, he is honest, and he knows that regardless of how long we're out there slogging along, eventually the lesson or the schooling session will be over and then he'll get goodies. (I think, because of the fact that horses "eating good" after every race is a good thing, "goodies" are VERY important to them all. At least that's one holdover from Huey's track days ;o).

My point is, we MUST keep working for these wonderful horses, for happy LONG retirements and second careers for as many as seem to want them.

You all are smart people. have a computer question. About every 30 seconds my sceen goes blank and I have to re-start it again. I have crawled around (well, as good as I can with a bad knee) and cant seem to find any wires loose or stuff like that. Sometimes it works for fifteen minutes or so then blank. so I start it again. This is not a regular computer (mine is broken) but am using a web tv-where the box plugs into a tv set. The tv is fine. any ideas?

Strategy for Monday November 5

A new week and our fight continues. We know it’s hard and, at times, discouraging but we CAN make a difference!

Remember….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico.

The only way we will win this battle is with more awareness. We now know from our poll that we have a lot of support in the senate. This is a chance to get the rest of the undecided senators on board. Now that the plants have ceased operation in this county, we must grab this opportunity to push for legislation that will end the transport of horses to slaughter. Use this time wisely…..we are at a critical point and actually have a chance to make a difference!!

Senators we were specifically asked to target.

Tom Harkin (IA) ph: 202-224-3254 fax: 202-224-9369

Orrin Hatch (UT) ph: 202-224-5251 fax: 202-224-6331

Hello Barbaro,

I just watched the touching video tribute to George Washington. The look in his eye while racing on the turf reminded me of your video tributes while on various surfaces...

You guys show the eagerness and wide-eyed innocent expressions of a puppy at play with their littermates. Absolutely no care in the world other than winning the prize, be it a race for you horses or center-stage in the photo for the puppies. So innocent. I would just LOVE to hug ALL of you...

Today my Montego and I went to the round pen again. This time with Al. I stood outside and watched those two work.

John, from work, Taylor, the now-thirteen year old whose family I adopted Montego from, and I had been working on Montego's lunging. Very hard work.

But today Al had different techniques for Montego...

Honey, she was beautiful. I was sooo captivated by her that a number of times, I forgot to listen to and watch Al so that I would learn.

After awhile, she had that same look in her eye that I have seen in yours and your colleague's eyes...the eager puppy eyes.

I can't help but think that she was lead around the pen today by a "friend"... Thank you Honey. Thank you for giving Montego her innocent and happy moment today. No, it wasn't a racetrack Honey, but it was still a circle...and you were there. xxoo

And yes, I hugged her.

Should we grab your blanket and call it a day? We'll pull it up high on your neck and fluff the folds perfectly for nuzzling.

The air is starting to have a chill to it and they're saying we may have snow this week. I am told that Montego loves snow!

Your Dream Angels are flitting around and they seem a bit busy. They've been trying to get your little friend Jack Frost out of his cozy woodland home and put him to work.

His side of the story is that he HAS been busy dabbing arrays of frost around Fans' homes and car windows... Honey, I think we best leave this situation alone!

Let's settle you in and get you to bed. Your Dream Angels will be by shortly. In the meantime, I have spearmint wishes for you...

Your healing is complete and strength will forever carry you through your days and into the sweet dreams of your loved ones.

Good night Honey. I love you sooo much and look for your signs all the time. Good night...XXOOxxox

Hope and Little Laurie H.,

May you two have sweet dreams and blankets of love and happiness in your lives.

I need to email Mary L. for updates on you, hopefully with some pictures.

I miss you two. I think of you often and imagine only good things for you.

Good night. I love you. Never forget that... xxooxxox

Barb AZ, and Chunky and Punky!

Thank you Barb. I have missed everyone here soooo much.

There were a number of other times when I wanted to hug Montego but I'm learning that there are times when "work" must come first!

Montego would get confused a few times and either stop by me or start coming over to me while I was standing near the pen. Oh, it was soooo hard not to reach out to her...but, we're both learning!

It was beautiful Barb. It was beautiful...

Good night to you and Chunky and Punky. May sweet dreams fill your mind and love and comfort fill your heart. Good night! xxoo
