Barbaro Updates: 426

updates are now here.

Update 2693: A seemingly positive report on Tueflesburg: New Update on Teuflesberg!

Update 2692: A perfectly pleasant afternoon spent at Churchill Downs. Not a cloud in the sky, mid 60s weather and some decent horse racing. The crowd is much thinner than Keeneland, although that could be masked by the sheer size of Churchill. Anyway, it was easy to get around. Prom Shoes won an nice allowance race, earlier in the year he had run in a few nice stakes races. Terrific Storm won the feature, and came on strong in the end to do so. It was somewhat sad to see a $700K earner running in the final race, a 5k claimer. He finished third.

A friday update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:

We had a busy and cool Friday morning. Several sets breezed today as Robbie will be going to another jump race tomorrow. The first set was Real Lace and Who's Happy. Neither of these fillies mind the dark and that's a good thing. We are so ready for the clocks to change this weekend. It will be nicer when it is a bit lighter in the mornings. Tim jogged Who's Happy and tomorrow she will be breezing. Veiled Reference and Not A Fling had a maintanance breeze together. They went a half mile on the Tapeta surface. Kitty (Tale Tails) and Molly (Sailing Home) breezed their first quarter together after they both have had some time off. They are a great pair. Everyone handled their breezes well and hopefully will eat up tonight at dinner time. Luke was the escort for Bubble Gum again today. He loves to go up and see all of the action. Mike (Bubble Gum's owner) was filming her like Steven Spielberg. Tim reports that she was great and the best ride of the day.

Update 2691: The Discussion Board is back up now. I'm still at Churchill Downs enjoying racing.

Update 2690: Due to technology reasons the discussion forum is currently down. Personally, I'm enjoying a nice afternoon of Churchill Downs Racing.

Update 2689: Starting to settle in now at Churchill, although its still madness out there on the track. Of the seven I rode today, five of them were joggers. Churchill's track includes a chute (it provides a one turn mile I think) which can be used to jog around, so I actually spent a lot of my morning in the chute jogging around. It was a little chillier and a couple of the horses did their fair share of plunging and diving, but we survived.

Of the two I galloped, one set off nicely, then someone decided to jump off right in front of me, his horse would not go so I had to take up and move more to the inside, and then this guy came flying by me chirping to his horse. Of course my horse would not settle after than, but that is galloping at Churchill!

Update 2688: Curlin arrived at Churchill Downs a couple of days ago. I am pretty sure I saw him yesterday going to the track, but given the "chaos" of the morning I cannot be certain. Anyway, it appears a decision on his future has not yet been made. Steve Haskin writes about his year: Steve Haskin's Classic Recap: Curl Jam.

Keep calling.

Good morning, Gypsy Alex and all my fellow Fans!

It's a chilly morning in Maine and apparently we are going to be brushed by Hurricane Noel this weekend. My thoughts will be with all - human and equine - who find themselves in the path of this storm. Predictions are for winds over 100 mph out in Nova Scotia.

I'm disappointed that we can't seem to budge out lone hold-out Congressman to cosponsor - says he'll support but is concerned about the AMVA and the farmers. As someone here says ---Feh! We've addressed the concerns countless times so it must be a matter of money.

I'll be out of touch for a day or so while I drive to Massachusetts and back over the weekend.

Many thanks once again to Alex, Tim and Penny for all they do to keep us informed, in touch and entertained.

Prayers to all in need.

Hiya, FsOB! TGIF, or what? May each of you have a productive Friday and either a relaxing or exciting weekend, to your preference. Peace, RMH

#### To Marg in Maine: Wow, I had to idea that Noel's effects would stay close to the coast so far north. Safe driving as you head south in Massachusetts, Marg.
To Alex: There are a couple of restaurants which you should definitely try to make it to in Louisville while you are there. I believe that these should all still be going strong: the Bristol Bar & Grille, Jack Fry's, & Cafe Metro. All are in the Highlands neighbourhood. Are you only in Louisville for a week? ####

Happy Friday to all !!

Alex, by Sunday morning you should be able to see the twin spires a little earlier in the morning.

MO Horses/George Washington Tribute

Thank you to the FOBs who donated in honor of George Washington to the MO Horse Heroes. The deadline for contributions is Monday night. If you would like to donate, please email me at
jroe19@adelphia.net and I will give you all the information.

A card will be sent to the Jacksons with a Celtic theme and Irish blessing. Names of donors will be on the card. A simple clay pot of shamrocks will be sent to them with the card through Kennett Florist. I will also be sending a letter to the London Times, telling them of what we are doing to honor George Washington, so that they are aware of our love for Gorgeous George and the proactive approach we are taking, helping rescued horses in his honor.

Please join us in this most worthwhile endeavor. We have the power to turn the great tragedy of George Washington into something positive for needy horses.

Happy Friday morning FOBs - Yea! - we made it again. TGIF for sure.

Marg - have a safe trip!

To all who have been so kind to send prayers and good thoughts to Denny for his last ordeal (severe anemia) I just thought I'd post one last update. All the tests that he has had have shown no cause for the blood loss. They want to do another test but Den said he's had enough. He's not losing blood at the present time and taking iron to get his numbers back up. As long as he's OK, I guess I don't mind that they don't know - just as long as it doesn't happen again.

Have a wonderful day and a fantastic weekend!!

We WILL get the federal legislation in place - don't get discouraged.

Good Morning Family/Fans of Barbaro

PLEASE CALL, FAX, EMAIL.

The market is like an open market full of killer buyers attaining horses cheap and free....we have alot on our plate FOBS...but we can do this. We have the hearts like the mighty Lion...and we are led my Barbaro's sweet spirit, and we hear the cries of other horses facing certain, barbaric death. WE CAN DO THIS!

Remember the rescues, the ones suffering human or animal, our wildlife, our Fallen Angels, and each other, our family.

Strategy for Friday November 2

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND…..FREE FOR ALL FRIDAY

This is the day that you can go over the lists from the week and catch up on calls that you may have missed. It also gives some of you the chance to give another call to someone that you feel may be close and just needs that “extra” push. Please share any information that you think might help others. Good luck and let us know how you make out!!

Please make your calls this week in honor of George Washington and for these nameless horses that died without the love and care they so deserved in the Illinois trailer accident. Also, for the survivors of this horror….may they find peace and live free of fear and distress.

Remember….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico.

The only way we will win this battle is with more awareness. We now know from our poll that we have a lot of support in the senate. This is a chance to get the rest of the undecided senators on board. Now that the plants have ceased operation in this county, we must grab this opportunity to push for legislation that will end the transport of horses to slaughter. Use this time wisely…..we are at a critical point and actually have a chance to make a difference!!

Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!

I would like to ask for prayers for a horse named Fantsy and her owner, Christi Jo. She is at New Bolton and I will be meeting her owner there this afternoon as she crosses the Bridge. I learned about her Wednesday night (thanks, Becky Fredericks. There was a reason for this happening and I owe you one.) and Fantsy has been communicating with me ever since. She has a loving heart, a gentle spirit and is ready to go. May the Lady Epona hold her in her loving arms and I know Barbaro and "the gang" are waiting to greet her. She will be free of her pain.

As much as I will miss her physical presence, her love will always be with Christi and those she loves. I am the better healer for having known her for such a short time.

I love you all.

READ JOE THIS MORNING.

NOW THINK A LONG TIME ON JOE IN THE FEEDLOTS WITH HORSES WHO WILL BE SOLD TO SLAUGHTER, AND JOE IS GENTLING THEM, GROOMING THEM, TALKING TO THEM, LOVING THEM UP. ANYONE WHO TELLS ME HE IS TRULY NOT AN ARCHANGEL WILL HAVE TO SUFFER THE TORMENTS OF HELL. tIM gEE AND KATHY TOO...

i HAVE NEVER SEEN A PICTURE OF jOE...BUT HE --AND WHAT HE DOES EVERYDAY FOR HUNDREDS OF HORSES JUST STAYS AND STAYS WITH ME ALL DAY. THANK YOU JOE. GOD CHOSE WELL...

To Love What You Do And Feel That It Matters - How Could Anything Be More Fun?... Katherine Graham

This Place Looks Like A Freaking Feed Lot... Allison Martino, 12 years old, and she lives in Woodland.

Well Golly Gee... Joe Shelton

Here we are on a beautiful autumn morning, and just outside our house 109 horses are waiting for breakfast. We might be 71 degrees. The clocks go backwards (for sure) this weekend, which means darkness will come in the middle of the day. For 10 years we have been buying alfalfa from Tom Hayes, and this week Tom raised his prices. It would cost more than 80 dollars to fill up the old ranch truck with gas, but yesterday it cost more than 90 dollars. When you open the envelope which contains our liability insurance statement, you can actually hear laughter. Even a bearclaw from the little bakery on Main Street has gone up 20 cents.

But none of this matters. Never did. We ride the tide, or maybe it is go with the flow, whatever those things mean. A trip to the feed lot in Elk Grove brings the big picture. Old and young. All breeds, and for 50 cents a pound a horse can be yours. There is nothing more personal than a feed lot. Life and death in one tiny package. Choices are seldom easy. The killer is in his trailer, and there is a country singer on the radio. Telling us his heart has been broken by the only girl who truly understood him. Through the little window I can see the killer eating Fritos and talking on his cell phone.

You have to understand. Life does come to a halt. At that moment. Surrounded by more than 30 doomed faces. The Fritos, the cell phone. All the noise from a not so far away freeway. My dog Jewels watching me from the ranch truck. It is like someone hit the freeze button on a remote.

Only 2 thoroughbreds in the bunch. Which is good, because I only have enough money for 2 horses.

Long ago I would pay my money and get out of there. But now I stay and visit each horse. I keep grooming supplies in the truck, and if a horse needs a makeover I try to help. There was a wild, never been touched colt, and he would not let me near. But all the rest I was able to brush. Clean their feet. Gave out carrots. The horse killer still in his trailer, and now he is eating a bowl of cereal.

You wanted to know what it is like. It is all the colors, all the emotions, all the brillant observations which you find out later are worthless. I once thought I knew everything. Hanging out with horses who are about to be slaughtered has taught me I know nothing at all.

There is an A&W Root Beer stand in Natomas. Jewels and I always stop on the way home. He likes the vanilla swirl.

We only get this one chance. All living things. One chance on earth, and for a lousy 50 cents a pound that chance is gone.

There was a bay mare, maybe 15 or so, and I thought about her all night. She was probably a quarter horse, and her hind legs were covered with dry milk. The killer told me he bought her from a breeding farm. I will phone the killer this morning and tell him I want the bay mare. At the race track is another horse, 5 years old, and he is a stallion. He will also be coming soon.

A take your breath away beautiful autumn morning. Enjoy your day, and be sure to hug your horses.

Joe

Every November come the birds. They eat grain from horse poop. But then the birds leave their own poop. Poop on top of poop.

An Oldie but Goodie. Below on the right is Emma, and she came to us more than 2 years ago from the race track. Emma is small and dainty, and she had a very sore back but now she is fine.

jonna - YUP - JOE IS MY HERO ! I always start my day with JOE. I often start my day with tears - because I start my day with JOE. Today - wowser - big, crocodile tears .... thinking of Joe spending gentle moments with these doomed horses.
Makes me run into my closet and grab more for the coming garage sale - with proceeds for JOE and his friends. I can surely do without another denim shirt so that his doomed friends can have a carrot ! I cannot imagine a more gentle and giving man. I cannot imagine a better friend to the horses. JOE makes me want to work a little harder for our horses - to tell one more person -
have one less latte - wowser .... and sigh !

extra Friday 11/2 National Target List (HAHS)

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all your calls.

IMO - convey the website www.vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - ask them to look at PR dated 10/9. Tell them to look for a copy of PR that should have arrived at their offices recently.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-459-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy - and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE NEW SUGGESTION/CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE HS History & THE LIST OF SENATORS.)

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Friday 11/2) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311, ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the current/new ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind.

The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:
"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who in not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

Prior HS History - In Daniel’s words posted at the HAHS Yahoo Group Site: Today start a new cycle contacting the new Senate members elected last November. We have also included the last cluster of Senators from the special contacting list provided by our lobbyists. (Note - the "special contacting list" is the AWI/SAPL target list; go to the DB, message 15321.3 for the complete list and info how it was compiled. CJinHammondIN)

Am reading the Golden Compass again, enjoying it so much...it's a beautiful day, and i also have to clean the yard,, so hard to determine the doggie deposits from the many similarly colored leaves on the ground...Oy and Oy. Kvelling, kvelling.

Have a fine day, call, call, call....we will do this. I truly feel God means this to be done...and don't forget, this isn't the world he intended for his creations. We just must muddle along.

Hero saves therapy horses from Buckweed Fire

By Jerry Berrios, Staff Writer

Article Last Updated: 11/02/2007 01:45:13 AM PDT

CANYON COUNTRY - On that Sunday as the Buckweed Fire roared closer, Jim Tindell thought of the horses.

Manager of a Saugus equestrian facility that helps disabled children, Tindell braved the inferno to round up and rescue the organization's 12 therapy horses.

The Santa Ana-fueled fire left Tindell with second- and third-degree burns and he is now hospitalized at the Grossman Burn Center at Sherman Oaks Hospital awaiting skin grafts.

But while the fire also torched the Heads Up - Therapy With Horses facility in the Angeles National Forest, it hasn't extinguished the same type of determination that Tindell displayed amid the blazes.

"We will be back," said Nancy Pitchford, 64, the group's executive director and founder. "We can't let our kids down. We just can't."

The organization has moved to a temporary spot in Canyon Country since the fire demolished its horse trailer, a hay barn, the feed room, saddles and the mobile home where Tindell lived with his family.

Amid the fray, Gypsy - an 8-year-old quarter-horse pony - was the only horse that was hurt, suffering burns around her eyes, muzzle, back and right rear leg.

On Thursday, Pitchford gently held a wet sponge to Gypsy's nose, preparing to dab on burn cream. As Gypsy was led from the barn, Chris Pulsifer - who is autistic - caught a glimpse of the singed horse.

"What happened to his eyes?" the 19-year-old asked.

"The fire," said his

father and stepmother standing near him.

A Valencia resident, Pulsifer has been riding at Heads Up for seven years. At first, he couldn't get on, walk or groom a horse by himself.

Now he does all of that and even teaches other children with special needs how to brush and bathe a horse.

"Riding the horses has given him more confidence in himself," said his father, Rob Pulsifer, 52.

Saving the horses

With flames approaching, Tindell sent his wife, daughter and son away as he worked to round up the facility's horses.

When he realized he couldn't do it alone, he ran south on Bouquet Canyon Road and Tindell - who suffers from Parkinson's disease - fell several times.

"The wind blew his cowboy hat off. His hair caught on fire," Pitchford said.

"He put it out with his hands."

Tindell suffered second-degree burns on his back and third-degree burns on his hands and face, she said.

A U.S. Forest Service ranger eventually picked him up at Texas Canyon Road and transferred him to an ambulance that took him to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

He was then transferred to the Grossman Burn Center where he is expected to remain for three more weeks undergoing skin grafts.

The family's home was burned and they are staying with relatives.

Jim's brother, Tim Tindell, and some forest rangers were able to get the horses into a safe arena on that fire-filled Sunday.

The next day, the horses were rescued by a sheriff's deputy and others who took them to a temporary site.

"It's called Magic Ranch, which is perfect," said Michael Holt, 48, president of Heads Up.

Special kids

Heads Up works with children with a range of special needs, and half of its 75 clients are autistic, Pitchford said.

Children are matched with a horse according to their needs and personality. The kids are pushed to do things they might not feel comfortable doing, such as interacting with other riders or stretching to grab a bean bag off the horse's mane.

The Buckweed Fire has done the same thing for the 21-year-old organization.

"We were content doing what we were doing," Holt said. "We got kicked out of our comfort zone."

Organization leaders are now evaluating their next steps. They want to buy the ranch they are occupying temporarily and make it a permanent site.

Heads Up also wants to provide free therapy to all children who attend their classes. Currently, if they can pay, they do; if they can't, they don't.

While group leaders are working on those large-scale goals, they also have short-term ones that need to be accomplished.

They have started raising money to help the Tindell family recover.

"Heads Up is a big family," Pitchford said. "It's not just an organization."

They also need the children to help rehabilitate the horses - brushing, walking, feeding and loving them.

On Thursday morning, Chris Pulsifer walked Big Nikki around the arena.

Big Nikki, along with Little Niki, Murphy and Gypsy, look skinny, sad and tired.

"We really want to spoil them. They deserve the pampering," Holt said of the horses.

"They spent over 24 hours in a forest fire."

Didn't realize BobbieB was looking for me - haven't read any Comments here yet today - and she called to ask, what does PR mean in my suggestions about telling congressional aides about the VEW. I didn't realize the abbreviation PR for Press Release is not universally known - and as a writer shouldn't have assumed it is. Gonna spell it out in future posts - and as I just told her on the phone - thanks BobbieB for adding to my growth as a writer.

Jacksons to be honored at International Equine Conference on Laminitis and Diseases of the Foot (last 4 paragraphs of story below)

John and Marianne Castle to be honored at International Equine Conference

By MICHELE DARGAN
Daily News Staff Writer

Friday, November 02, 2007

Marianne and John Castle of Palm Beach were 'instrumental' in getting International Equine Conference on Laminitis and Diseases of the Foot off the ground.

Palm Beachers John and Marianne Castle have owned a lot of horses.

But their beloved appaloosa, Spot, was special.

"He was a very intelligent horse and a very gentle fellow," John Castle said. "He loved to lie down in the stall and put his head in my lap. I used to say he was the world's largest lap pet."

For the last five years of his life, Spot suffered from laminitis, a debilitating equine disease of the hoof that often results in euthanasia. Laminitis is inflammation of the tissue that connects the hoof to the leg bone.

The Castles will be honored today for their support of research targeting the disease at the fourth International Equine Conference on Laminitis and Diseases of the Foot.

The conference, held every other year, will take place today through Sunday at the Palm Beach Convention Center in West Palm Beach. About 350 to 400 veterinarians, students, farriers, technicians, owners and trainers are expected to attend.

Dr. James Orsini, associate professor of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine, is the director of the conference. Orsini cared for Spot, who 4suffered from the disease until his death in 1998.

"The Castles were so instrumental in getting this conference off the ground, and they've been solid in their support since its inception in 2001," Orsini said. "They were so taken aback that advances were so minimal in understanding laminitis. They are always quiet in what they do that the committee felt it was time to let the world know how important John and Marianne Castle are to the equine industry."

Gretchen and Roy Jackson, owners of 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, will be honored with the Spot Castle Awareness Award.

Barbaro, who broke his right hind leg running in the Preakness, came down with a severe case of laminitis while healing from the broken leg. Barbaro waged an eight-month battle to recover from the break, which included two dozen surgeries and cast changes. But the champion horse was euthanized when he came down with laminitis in his left rear hoof and then his two front feet.

Barbaro's battle with the disease brought laminitis to the forefront in the national press, Orsini said.

"With a wonderful guy like (trainer) Michael Matz and great owners like Gretchen and Roy Jackson, that level of devastation affects everyone," Orsini said. "I think everyone now knows what laminitis is due to the Barbaro phenomenon."

Since we can't get on the DB, I want to say right here and now that I apologize to Alex and to anyone who I might have offended while eulogizing the gorgeous George Washington. I did not and do not blame his connections for what happened, but I did hit the people who run the sport of horse racing for being insensitive and slow to react to needed changes to protect horses and jockeys.

I am so sorry if I offended anybody involved in the sport of horseracing. I love it myself, and couldn't give it up, but some things do need to change.

GS104:
Grief Support Skills
(AC and AR Program
core module)

excerpt from Teresa Wagner -

The physical death of a deeply beloved animal is one of the most poignant, sacred and often emotionally devastating life passages animal lovers ever experience. I believe that our grief at these times deserves to be honored with acknowledgment of the legitimacy of our loss, and to be supported with great love, tenderness and effective support skills.

When another being truly cares, understands, and acknowledges the depth of our loss, our path is lighter. When the truth of a tender and difficult loss is acknowledged, we know we are not alone.

When we are understood, healing feels much more possible. All of us on earth are here together to help one another. Almost anyone seeing another in emotional pain wants to help. Yet, seeing or hearing someone in great anguish can also be overwhelming and intimidating. We may feel awkward or unsure about what to say or do. Sometimes in attempts to help, friends, family and even professional counselors, healers, or authors impose their beliefs, thinking that their own paradigms ofanimal death and grief will be relevant and helpful to all others. For grievers, this intentional or unconscious imposing gets in the way of them discovering for themselves what they believe or need, and what will work for them. It also often adds anger and frustration to an already stressful time of grief.

The most empowering things we can do to help grievers is to learn to be truly present with their suffering: to listen, not advise; to judiciously and gently suggest possibilities, not impose our beliefs as fact; to be with them as they find their own way, not judge, push or prod them in the way we think they should grow. To be truly present with someone's pain without feeling a need to fix it, reconcile it, or recoil from it is one of the most powerful gifts we can give another. It requires patience, discernment of what to say when, skills of empathic expression, and great respect for the wisdom of the other's soul. These delicate and subtle grief support skills can be learned and integrated into our practices as animal communicators and healers.

Note from CJ - I will post this with links at the DB as soon as I can. Meanwhile, more excerpts:

This brief, four session teleclass offers an introduction to these skills and ideas as well as an overview of the grief recovery process. There will be time in each session for questions and answers and discussion of the material.

Tuition: $174

[excerpt from bio info] Teresa has loved and lived with animals all of her life. It is being with them that brings her to the core of her soul while here on earth. Animals and animal issues provide the meaning, guidance, joy, and purpose in her life.

She has had a private animal communication and flower essence practice since 1991, and is author of the audio book Legacies of Love, A Gentle Guide to Healing from the loss of Your Animal Loved One.

Her entry into the fields of grief recovery and traumatic stress began when she lost her first cat in 1985. Unable to easily come to terms with her grief, she sought therapy and began a rigorous review of the grief literature and grief workshops. Over time, these sources helped her heal and understand the grief recovery process. This motivated her to design and offer grief workshops to help others through this disenfranchised loss. Since then, Teresa has worked with thousands of grieving humans, individually, in workshops, and in bereavement support groups. In a year long consulting project with a hospice, she conducted research to identify the competencies needed for effective grief support, resulting in the Grief Support Competencies Profile.

Teresa is passionately concerned about the pet overpopulation epidemic and the trauma this creates for both the animals and animal welfare employees as well.

In conjunction with FES (Flower Essence Society) Teresa developed a flower essence formula to address the issues unique to the post traumatic stress of shelter and rescue animals. She also designs and conducts compassion fatigue workshops for animal shelter workers throughout the U.S. Teresa also developed a section on her Web site as a place of solace and compassion fatigue education for animal care workers.

I don't really even know why I keep calling and writing, because I honestly don't believe it's making any difference. On the other hand, I haven't stopped yet! I was surprised to get the news from Senator Schumer's aide this morning, because when I spoke to him on Wednesday, he sounded very discouraging about the issue. I guess you never know! (I am in tears.)

Friday, November 2nd... You Only Live Once - But If You Work It Right, Once Is Enough... Joe E. Lewis

Joe

Joe is amazing! I don't know how he does this everyday.

What can we do to help him?

Posted by: kathyb at November 2, 2007 10:33 PM

I have a picture of Barbaro on my living room wall. Sometimes (when I get ovetwhelmed. ha) I have a woman cone to help me try to do something with my house (which is Chiefs doghouse-he has a 1400 sq. ft. house) and she saw the picture and asked if he is mine and I told her no. Then after she left I realized yes he is mine and he belongs to all of you-his family as we carry him in our hearts.I cant afford the help in cleaning house very often but I started to tell her that yes I drive a 20 yr. old car and my furniture would be turned down by goodwill but I can afford a racehorse. ha. Anyway we all (FOBs) own a lot of horses as each one we can rescue or help with medical bills belongs to all of us. well, didnt mean to write a book here but I guess all you get what I am trying to say.

Hi there.....Just a question. It seems like many members of the House and Senate agree to support the no slaughter bill when we call.

However (correct me if I am wrong), the bills never seems to reach the floor of either the House or Senate. Is it possible that the powers that be are just playing us and have no intention of actually doing anything.

This worries me and if this is the case, we need to do even more to make the general public (which seems to be oblivious to what happens to many horses) aware of this horror.

I love all horses as you all do and this is a really upsetting thought.

I just feel sometimes that we are being played. I hope not.

Please keep calling our representatives.....I do not mean to be discouraging. The more we call the better chance we have.....so please call call call.

Hay, bArbaro, can you do me a HUGE favor??? There is a very pretty lady horse named Fantasy who crossed the Bridge about 2 hours ago. I was with her and her people at New Bolton (you remember New Bolton, don't you?). I never left her...and there were burbs who stayed in her stall and lots of horses nearby, too. Can you show her around and take her to see the beautiful lady horses? I told her that Ruffian, Gallant Secret, Pine Island and the other ladies would want to show her around. I told her you would be waiting for her in hevvin.

And as I got into my car to drive home, there was a rainbow in the sky. Her owner didn't see it. I did. Thru my tears.

Fantasy is free from pain and her joy shines down on us all.

Barb AZ, I had the same log-in issues on the TV site trying to get to the poll, except it asked for my dress size...(just kidding). But seriously, folks, it won't accept me as a member so I can vote. Do I want to be a member of a TV news website that would stoop so low as to have me as a member, LOL?

Eileen,

To answer your question, I keep hearing rumblings that it may come up for a vote. I don't know if there is anything to it or not, as we have heard this before. Hopefully they will do something SOON.

Hi Gang: That's good news about Teufflesberg. However, I hate to hear that dreaded L word. Let's just hope he has no problems bearing weight. Just keep your prayers going that he comes out of it okay. Sounds like a very good report though.

Thanks for the wellwishes about my new venture. As I said Bells is a very sweet girl and I'm sure she will make a great mom. After she got hurt, her head just wasn't into racing anymore. First we have to find her a gentleman caller and then hopefully by late next year or early the following year, I will be a grandma. I'm so excited about this.

Hope all is well with everyone and have a great weekend.

Hi Guys....Boxcar Update!

As some of you are aware, Mr. Boxcar had surgery on Tuesday for a fracture in his cannon bone. I went to visit him today and he was in good spirits.

After several consultations, I decided to go with the recommendation of Dr. Scott Palmer of NJ Equine. It consists of a combination of two options that would avoid him having to go under anesthesia. On Tuesday he had three holes drilled into the bone marrow to allow stem cells to reach and heal the fracture. In four weeks, he will begin shock wave treatments to stimulate the bone. He will remain under the care of Dr. Palmer and will remain at NJ Equine for his post operative care and rehabilitation....probably for two to three months. It’s a beautiful place and he is having the best of care. Dr. Palmer is a foremost expert in equine sports rehabilitation and I was referred to him by a woman who’s opinion I value greatly.

Boxcar was very anxious for his treats today (almost took my hand off!) and looked very handsome with his blue bandage!! It will be a long haul but, hopefully, he will race again as a 4 year old in the spring.

"The sport simply cannot allow tragedies like this to keep happening. Seeing a horse like George Washington break down in front of the grandstand and then put down in full view turns most people's stomachs. Synthetic tracks stay dry, even and safe under any conditions. How can anyone doubt the need for these surfaces after seeing what happened to poor Gorgeous George?"

An article on espn.com. Thank you Bill Finley.

It’s Just Plain “Common Horse Sense”

It’s just plain “Common Horse Sense” that Americans don’t eat horses.

It’s just plain “Common Horse Sense” that horses are companion animals to people in the United States.

It’s just plain “Common Horse Sense” that horses are not bred in the United States for human consumption and are NOT considered food.

It’s just plain “Common Horse Sense” that horse slaughter is NOT humane euthanasia

It’s just plain “Common Horse Sense” that banning the slaughter of horses will NOT increase abuse and neglect. In fact, horse slaughter promotes abuse and horse theft.

Killer buyers may try to change their name to ‘Order Buyers’ to make it appear that what they are doing is not so unpleasant, but it’s just plain “Common Horse Sense” that a killer of horses will always be known as a ‘killer buyer.’

MJ-

Alex's comment on the $700K earner also peaked my interest. I did some research and it looks like the horse is "Ask the Lord", a winner of over $735K. He is a 10 yr old--72 starts, 20 wins, 11 places and 13 shows. This is the horse that ran 3rd in the 10th at Churchill. He is a stakes winner at the ages of 6 and 7 and stakes placed at eight. He now looks to have fallen to the ranks of 5K claimer. Alex, please correct me if I am wrong.

To me, this is another heartbreaker--a horse who has done so much who looks as if he no longer can compete at higher levels. He deserves a well-earned retirement. I have no idea if he is in danger but this is the type of horse I worry about. I don't have access to his past performances or ownership history--but this horse certainly provided lots of thrills to someone during his career. I pray that he well taken care of--Alex--any suggestions???????
