Barbaro Updates: 424

updates are now here.

Update 2683: Great press that exposes some of the reality of horse racing: Horses Earmarked for Slaughter Rescued by Woman.

Update 2682: Jenny (Kentucky) was correct with her quiz answer, Wayne Lucas was wearing his Packers jacket this morning as he supervised training aboard his pony. $100 to support the ongoing Thoroughbred Times advertising campaign.

I neglected to mention this morning, but we visited the paddock area a couple of times with the horses. It was cool being in the paddock of the Kentucky Derby. Walking out you could imagine what it would be like walking out for the big race. One of the horses though thought it would simply be fun to start plunging once he got on the racetrack. Thanks again for the neckstrap!

It was the first time I had been to the paddock since I was there for the Breeders' Cup last year. My last memory of the paddock was watching George Washington being saddled, not three feet away. I was with FOB Laura.

Update 2681: When considering the difference between Keeneland and Churchill Downs, I think it is best characterized by considering that Keeneland is a small village in a prestine environment where major horsemen like to relax. Churchill Downs is a vast city where some of the same horsemen, and many more are busy at work. Sometimes chaos appears to emerge at Churchill yet through the chaos horses are trained and all is well. Basically its manic at Churchill, its mellow at Keeneland.

I had seven to ride, four before the break and three after the break. All appeared to go well. The horses seemed to have settled into their new environment quite well. There are a few familiar faces among those working at Churchill, from my travels via Presque Isle and Keeneland. A few others have shouted a hello, more recognizing my passion for Brette Favre than anything else.

I am not the only horseman who was wearing Packers gear this morning. A trainer was wearing a Packer jacket. If you can name the trainer I will contribute $100 to the Thoroughbred Times advertising campaign. We had a stack of Thoroughbred Times in our tackroom. I thumbed through them and found three of the advertisements that have been run thus far. Just a very cool campaign I think!

Update 2680: Steve Haskin previews the Eclipse Awards in light of the Breeders' Cup: Eclipse Awards a No-Brainer This Year.

Stud fees are being set for our new retirees: Street Sense to Stand for $75,000; Hard Spun for $50,000.

Keep calling.

MORNING POST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI

Strategy for Wednesday October 31
Happy Halloween!!

Unfortunately, this weekend turned out to be very sad. The devastating loss of George Washington. And the tragic double decker trailer accident in Illinois that took the lives of several horses that were being transported under the most inhumane conditions. Please make your calls this week in honor of George Washington and for these nameless horses that died without the love and care they so deserved. Also, for the survivors of this horror….may they find peace and live free of fear and distress.

Remember….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico.

The only way we will win this battle is with more awareness. We now know from our poll that we have a lot of support in the senate. This is a chance to get the rest of the undecided senators on board. Now that the plants have ceased operation in this county, we must grab this opportunity to push for legislation that will end the transport of horses to slaughter. Use this time wisely…..we are at a critical point and actually have a chance to make a difference!!

MO Horses/George Washington Tribute

Thanks to all FOBs who have emailed me and told me they were contributing to the MO Horse Heroes in honor of George Washington. You will be part of the card and shamrocks that will be sent to the Jacksons next week.

If you would like to contribute in George's honor, please email me jroe19@adelphia.net or click on the blue link for more information.

Helping horses who need our continued support seems to make sense of this senseless tragedy.

Hiya, FsOB! Please may we have heat at the office building in RI today. We have had none all week and I am chilled to the bone. But my heart is warmed by Laurie H's sweet note last PM. May each of you have a productive day in your efforts on behalf of the horses. Alex, I'm eager to read more about your experiences at Churchill Downs. It IS in a different setting from that of Keeneland, isn't it? Peace, RMH

Good Wednesday morning FOBs,

Quite soggy and windy here in the sunshine state, but I'd rather have that than drought and the fear of fires.

I know some FOBs are feeling frustrated over Congress's inaction re: horse slaughter legislation. I feel that way too sometimes. But don't let it get you feeling hopeless. If you look back - MADD, the Amber Alert and other worthwhile causes were the result of someone who would not quit because they believed change was necessary. Our cause is worthy and ending horse slaughter is necessary. So let's pursue this with renewed vigor.

Happy Halloween everyone! I hope you all get treats, and no tricks. Alex, looking forward to your report today of life at Churchill Downs.

Have a great day. Be like Tank, and pay it forward.

Good morning All,

BUTTERFLY BELLE, the "forgotten" 5 year old beauty, who gave Russell Baze his record breaking victory, is running in the 4th race at Oak Tree, today. Please pray for a safe trip for her, and all of the beauties running today.

Let our broken hearts, and any pain that we may feel, make us even more merciful and kind. To honor the memory of our lost beauties, and to help the ones who need us, please employ some extra effort, and thus thwart the evil force of death and pain, that would take them from us, and steal our joy.

Call, at least three more times. Send three more faxes. Tell three more frens to tell three more frens...and PRAY.

They need us, Dear Hearts. We are their voice. For the legacy of our beloved BARBARO, take heart. It IS the Love that makes the difference.

From Chapter 27 then then 28 of ONLY A MOMENT BEFORE THE WIND, (on the DB under the BARBARO thread):

... They had all come a long way, and had been a long time, in Thisgoodplace. They had often “herd-tell” of the big'un-a-comin'. They thoroughly understood the place of high honor that belonged to the white war-horse of the Great Masse.

They kept themselves fit and strong. They sang songs of glorious valor. One day they would hear the bugles a-blarrin' and leap into the air to join the host. Then they would see him. Then they would know him. And he would say,

“Join me, Brothers, and Sisters! Bring your speed! Bring your courage! Bring your strength! The Great Masse has need of us.”

The Young Prince and Prince Brume pricked their ears forward, ready to hear the voice of the great white war-horse. They listened to the songs of the horses, so full of brave beauty, keeping the glory ever before them, turning from the smoke, blood and shadows of the past.

^-,^ ...They are only a moment away....

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

PLEASE CALL, FAX, EMAIL....Let us make sure that all horses, animals, in this world are safe....they deserve treats of a good life, with care and love....STOP HORSE SLAUGHTER AND TRANSPORTATION ACROSS THE BORDERS.

I have decided when given the opportunity on presidential debates, etc...speaking that they work for us, the people and we are unhappy about what our Congress is doing....not listening to us.

Free horses!

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at October 31, 2007 3:57 PM

Joe's junior archangels at work....

Wednesday, October 31st... Yesterday I told you about Free Horse signs popping up all over the place. A big collective nod. Here are some of the phone calls:

Nina Brown was on County Road 31 near Woodland when she saw a Free Horse sign. Nina stopped, and now she is the proud owner of a black and white paint gelding. He is thin, but not scary thin. Nina named him Elvis, because soon he will look like Elvis.

Rachel McGee lives in the hills of Vacaville, and 4 days in a row on her way to work Rachel would see a Free Horse sign. Finally she stopped to take a look. The owner of the house said here ya go, he only needs to learn how to lead. Rachel is now the owner of a grayish Tobiano colt, and she has taught him to lead and pick up his feet. Rachel named him Dusty, because he looks dusty.

The very last thing Cindy Jacobs needed was another horse. But every morning the Free Horse sign was calling out to her, so after a week Cindy stopped to have a look. She is now the owner of an older Tennessee Walking Horse, and he once gave lessons at a fancy barn in Santa Rosa. Cindy now has 5 horses. Her husband is Mark, who Cindy says is the most patient man on earth.

Sarah McDowell lives in Utah now, and in front of a ranch was a sign saying Free Horses, Bring Your Trailer. There were all kinds. Paints and Drafts and Quarter Horses and even a few thoroughbreds. The owner said he must give all of his horses away, or take them to auction. Sarah chose a giant Draft gelding. His neglected feet were so huge a farrier charged Sarah $150.00 for a trim. Sarah named him Bozo, because he is kind of goofy. Bozo is now with a family in Taylorsville, Utah. He eats peanut butter right from your fingers.

Horse killers are laughing all the way to Bank of America. If you see a Free Horse sign, stop and tell the owners to be very careful. Canada is currently paying double what Mexico pays. An average size horse slaughtered in Canada can bring a killer $500.00. With a truck load a killer can earn 8 grand or more. If the doomed horses come to him for free, his profit is huge. Drives me crazy.

It is like the solution is out there, but where?

Maggie is 22, and she has an apartment in Vacaville. The regular stuff. A boyfriend, a job, a cat, and high speed internet. More than 2 years ago Maggie told me she wanted to help. But how? She does not have much money, and she owns not an inch of land. Maggie wants to know, how can she help rescue horses?

Beats me. But let me know what you come up with.

High speed internet was her most valuable tool. Apartment complexes are nifty that way. Maggie began writing letters to large breeding farms. And she would send them photos of doomed foals waiting at feed lots. I was doubtful. Even told her so. But results came quickly. One large ranch in Ramona sent Maggie a Thank You letter. Said they had no idea. They were thinking of cutting back anyway, but now they will for sure. Maggie invades chat rooms, especially chat rooms in Kentucky. She talks to breeders who year after year produce the same babies from the same tired old mares. She sends these breeders a link to slaughter houses, showing foals who are about to be butchered. Of course there are those who defend their practices. But Maggie has made headway, and it is impossible to say how many lives she has saved from her apartment in Vacaville.

If you saw all the babies at feed lots. All colors, all breeds. You would wonder, why would anyone breed their mare? You never forget those hopeful young faces.

We bow our heads to Maggie in Vacaville. Our hero for this week. A long time coming.

Enjoy your foggy Wednesday, and be sure to hug your horses. The Kings open their season tonight in New Orleans. And Holly Meeks will be on the streets of Sacramento with 15 young kids. Door to door, looking for candy. Be safe out there...

Joe

The gelding Bill is with our shoer Tim Gee. Bill was bored with both of us, so he went to sleep.

After The Adoption. Bog Hunter was adopted from us earlier this year, and below on the right shows him at his new home. Bog Hunter is living in paradise. He made almost 300 thousand as a race horse. Faster than a speeding train.

COUPLA THINGS:

cAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN WHY THIS 110TH CONGRESS CARRIES OVER TO NEXT YEAR? jE SUI TRESSSSSS CONFUSEE...
(Yes, on i march, on I call,,,,on i grind my teeth.)

Secondly:
I still feel like a tuning fork struck but not yet released from the deep resonance of GW's death. I will carry on.
I always will carry on.
But this death--
I hate it so when people I respect say,
Well, that's just horse racing.
Again.
Why are they so fragile. Why are they able to do this kind of catastrophic damage in their round paddocks while frisking about? (That for those that keep trotting that little anecdote out...)
We need to build a better thoroughbred, IMHO,
and as for GW pawing the gound with his ruined foreleg that was of no more use to him--of course.
The want to run. It's their heart's desire. Can't we make it possible for the TB to have both the heart and the body to accomplish their leaps into history?
It happens in GH too, BTW...I just got in a little girl from Iowa who ran in Wisc, OK and IO. Where did she blow her hock? If my puter was working, I could see it in her performance charts...but we all know my computer is in hell...
But what I'm saying is, these blown hocks are so common, they aren't even referred to in the GH records we get with the dogs...even really good adoption people consider it a commonplace injury.

Anyhow. My heart will go on aching until it doesn't, I guess... I don't know how we can make this better...not condoning track conditions on dirt as they were on Sunday is one way...but.
What the hell do i KNOW.

lOVE YOU fob'S. tHIS BEING WITHOUT MY 'PUTER IS REALLY, REALLY AWFUL.

Jonna,

Senators and US Representatives have two year terms, hence each session lasts two years.

It's a good thing. It gives you two years to pass a bill versus just one...as we see how incredibly slow the legislators move.

what I think George Washington would say..

I loved to race it's true
But the conditions of the track to me were new
On Saturday I wasn't given a choice
They didn't ask me, I had no voice
I wanted to stay in Ireland, the green grass of home
I wanted to smell the lavender and over the rolling hills roam
But because I didn't perform as a stud
They unretired me and I died in the mud
They knew the track was bad if they really had loved me
The would have scratched me from the race and let me be
Instead I'm going back to Ireland,to my home
But just my ashes, for my tomb

My thoughts exactly. Seabiscuit was scratched many times because he hated the mud. If his people truly cared he would have been scratched too. George Washington had no choice. He died trying to please his people.

May I suggest two of the most critical targets?

Sen. Saxby Chambliss
Sen. Cornyn

Seriously, if we all just focused on these two and let them know that we support S311, for several days, maybe a few brain cells might kick in.

For Senator Chambliss, the issue is, farmers not wanting to be told what to do and property rights. Let them know that if this does not pass, another country will be making a profit of our horses. By no means are we going to target any other industry.

I lived in South Georgia and I personally heard this farmers speak when a law would be instituted. I have held back for awhile, but it is time to target these two on your regular list, PLEASE!!! These two are your major concerns. These two are two peas in a pot.

OM!!!

I have learned some Southern language. You Southerners know what I'm talking about

EXTRA Wednesday 10/31 National Target List (HAHS)

Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all your calls.

IMO - convey the website www.vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - ask them to look at PR dated 10/9. Tell them to look for a copy of PR that should have arrived at their offices recently.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-459-1887

800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy - and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators: (NOTE NEW SUGGESTION/CAVEAT FROM ABR STRATEGY, JUST BEFORE HS History & THE LIST OF SENATORS.)

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Wednesday 10/31) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311, ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the current/new ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind.

The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

adding this CAVEAT from recent ABR Strategy:
"Remember…….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who in not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico."

Prior HS History: Senators on the top part of today's list voted for Ensign-Byrd AgAppAm (2005). Of them only Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) cosponsored S. 1915 last Congress.

The add’l Senators are from the AWI/SAPL Target list. (Note - two of those on that list, also frequently on the ABR daily strategy lists, were among the four Senators who signed up to cosponsor most recently.). This is "the special contact list provided by our lobbyists," quoting from Daniel at HAHS.

####### cross-posting mine to Socorro at the DB

Sen. Chambliss is regularly on the ABR Strategy Lists and also on the HAHS Special Contact List (from the AWI/SAPL legislators) - so he does get targeted by multiple groups on a concentrated basis.

I believe those target lists include only legislators that the lobbyists believe might possibly sign on. Perhaps Cornyn is one they believe is such an opponent or non-supporter of a slaughter ban, that they don't want to waste people-power working on him. (IMO - Cornyn did not come out a possible supporter when the informal poll was conducted via this site in September.)

This is not to say that individual people should not want to work on him - just that the organized groups apparently have made a calculated decision to concentrate efforts elsewhere where they are more likely to produce results. [end of crosspost]

And as I suggested in a further post to Soc at the DB, our strategy people (ShelleyA & DebraWI) need to know the details you've related, to communicate this to our DC people, also to Steph Breaux the State Group Coordinator - so they can send the right materials and make the most effective arguments to these people.

Harriette -- thank you for your poem. It speaks the truth so eloquently. Poor George wasn't even given the dignity of dying at home. He died in a foreign place, covered in mud and blood. He was confused and frightened. He was far from home. Now, he returns only as ashes. I hope it was a very long flight home for those who didn't scratch our George that day -- a very, very long flight.

Jonnagrey -- like you I am hurt to the core by this loss. I don't know why -- but I think it's cumulative. Every time George raced, I prayed -- NOT an end like Barbaro or Ruffian. Then my very worst nightmare came true. I wasn't watching the race, because I NEVER watch them (after Barbaro) -- but I learned what happened that evening. George's death was just SO unnecessary in so many ways. I cannot accept it in any way.

I made my calls today -- don't know if my anger showed through. I call every day. I'll be sending out letters. However, I will only remain the head of the Washington State Group until Congress goes home this year. At that point, I will continue on my own, but I don't feel like I can encourage people any longer when I truly don't believe that it's making any difference.

Robyn and Jean - Nala just had a check up and we are so greatful she continues to be cancer free. It is almost a year ago she had her leg amputated and she gets around great, full of life.

Over Enough is doing well but continues to battle this horrible ethmoid tumor. He scoped clean in July but it appears to have come back again and he goes down to get re-scoped in 2 weeks. The treatment is very dangerous, surgery is out of the question because it is even more dangerous. Will keep you posted and thanks for your concern.

What a waste and so cruel to waste that beautiful brave horse that died in his blood and mud. ###I will work on sen Cornyn. havent had much luck with him so far. ###I have felt physically sick since last Saturday and off and on all day I feel sick thinking about the horses that are being transported to their death. ####Socorro:
Here's an excerpt from Senator Mary Landrieu's letter to then Senate Majority Leader William Frist urging him to introduce the anti-horse slaughter bill to the senate. This letter was composed last fall but the property rights issue, of course, has not changed.

"Most owners taking their horse to auction are unaware their horse may end up at a slaughterhouse due to a cadre of self-described “killer-buyers” that regularly visit horse auctions to buy horses for slaughter.
This legislation does not prevent a horse owner from humanly euthanizing their horse and does not infringe on private property rights."

By your statement, "By no means are we going to target any other industry......" I assume you are talking about the slippery slope? See my next post. It negates this pro-slaughter myth created by their lawyers and lobbyists.

Here's the info I sent to all my DC contacts who have expressed concern on the slippery slope. This should be a non-issue.

"Slippery Slope
Furthering the emphasis that a ban on horse slaughter will not have a disastrous economic impact on the farmer/rancher, the agriculture community also should have no concern about the “slippery slope.” Following is a comparison of the cattle industry and the horse slaughtering industry.

*In 2005 US cash receipts from cattle & calves was projected at $48.5 billion.
The horse slaughter industry, according to the tax forms of Dallas Crown in 2004, operated at a loss and paid $5.00 in taxes.

*In 2005 the cattle industry employed approximately 800,000 cattlemen & ranchers.
The horse slaughter industry employed less than 400 people.

*The U.S. beef industry is made up of more than one million businesses, farms and ranches conducting business in all 50 states.
The horse slaughter industry was in two states, Illinois and Texas.

*Cattle is produced in all 50 states and their economic impact contributes to nearly every county in the nation and they are a significant economic driver in rural communities.
Horses are (were) slaughtered in two states and provide no positive economic impact for rural communities.

*The cattle industry plays a major part of the American economy. In addition to US sales, the US cattle industry, despite having less than 10% of the world's cattle inventory, produces nearly 25% of the world's beef supply.
The horse slaughter industry does not even impact the American economy as the three slaughterhouses are foreign owned and sell their “product” overseas.

After Illinois passed their anti-horse slaughter ban Cavel International sued to remain open. During one of the hearings, the judge asked the state of Illinois if they had considered other animals in the their debates about the horse slaughter issue. Illinois’ answer: No!

In 1998, California passed their anti-horse slaughter ban. In the ensuing nine years, there has not been any pressure by animal activist/advocate groups to pursue similar legislation or for additional “rights” for farm animals as a direct result of the horse slaughtering ban.

Americans eat meat. Beef, poultry & fish are staples of the American diet. Horses are viewed as companion animals and are not accepted as part of the human food chain. Cattle, poultry and fish are raised for the purpose of human consumption, horses are not. In fact, horses are treated with medicines, such as wormers, that are not fit for human consumption.

And this comparison does not include the poultry industry, another major economic player in the US economy at $50 billion annually.

Politicians are not going to vote for legislation that hurts the cattle industry & poultry industries!"

I had one senator say to me that he feels PETA and other animal activist/advocate groups will, as a result of a horse slaughter ban, demand better treatment for farm animals. Fortunately he has a good sense of humor because I said to him, "Don't listen to them. You don't listen to anyone anyhow!" Yup, all is well. Haven't been audited yet and my house is still standing.

Today I spoke with George Fleeson - the ag aide handling calls for Senator Kyl (Arizona) relating to S311. Have communicated several times with George - and Daryl has sent much information to him and to Kyl's Chief of Staff. Am always well received - and George Fleeson IS reading what is sent his way and becoming quite knowledgable. Senator Kyl's record is highly supportive of animal rights issues - although he has not yet become a co-sponsor, and we are working on that !
This office seems highly sensitive to the "border issues" ..... as they should be .........
and George indicates that calls are welcomed. Most that they have received are supportive of S311. Daryl will meet with George Fleeson.the Chief of Staff, and likely, Senator Kyl during his upcoming DC visit.
I would like to encourage all FsOB to continue expressing your support to George Fleeson of Kyl's office, as I view them as "good friends" regarding S311.

YEA, JENNIE (Kentucky)!! Great job, and great advertising campaign for the money to go to! We saw Bev from MHR last weekend and she said that 2 more ads are scheduled to go in - one in the post BC edition.

Wayne Lukas was born in WI and coached several sports including football (I think!) at WI schools, but I didn't know he was such a sports nut. I thought if Dallas Stewart wasn't wearing Packers gear, he might want to. :) He was born in Mississipi, so I figured he might be a Brett Favre fan...

On a more serious note, Daryl (and others too), thanks again for all the info/ammunition. Some days - well, make that every day - you have to wonder why Congress just doesn't see the light on this one.

Strategy for Thursday November 1

Hard to believe it’s November already!! Hope everyone had a safe Halloween.

Unfortunately, this past weekend turned out to be very sad.

To Kathy in sc, Thanks for the well wishes about Coby. He's back on the track and showing no ill effects from Friday, thank God. Here is the website where you can see a picture of him. He is a cutey and I am very proud of him.

Thank you Sophie for the kind thoughts. Coby is fine. He's happy and raring to go again. He will probably be racing in Philadelphia Park in a couple of weeks and then that's it for him for the year.

Rosie and Walk had there first works this morning. They both did great. Walk will hopefully be racing on November 8 at the Meadowlands.

Well guys, I may be getting into yet another venture. A very interesting proposition presented itself this morning. One of the Fantasy Lane horses has been retired. Her name is Distant Bells and although I didn't have a share of her she was always very special to me. Well they have decided to make her a broodmare and I have been asked to become a partner in this. Bells was a very promising horse when the partners bought her. However, she suffered an eye injury in her stall and was never the same. They tried bringing her back after the injury but it didn't work out. So now they have decided that she is going to have baby Bells. Doesn't that sound cute?

What do you think? I'm going to be a grandma.

Take care all and Happy Halloween.

The Tin Man in "guarded" condition! Just read that he's been retired, but the troubling part is that he underwent surgery, & sustained a broken knee, coming out of the surgical procedure. Richard Mandella said it's "a serious fracture & quite severe!" Prayers going out to this great champ tonight. Love you SO much, Tin Man, please hang in there!!

Hiya, FsOB! Well, at least the heat got fixed at work this AM. I'd had a wretched week so far, because of being very upset about Geo. Washington and the horses injured in the truck accident in the Midwest, compounded by working in an office that was 55 degrees! Alex, you perspectives on Churchill Downs and Keeneland really buoyed my spirits this evening. And the photo today of "Bog Hunter" on Joe's web site - what a beauty!
Wishing everyone refreshing slumbers and may we all rise in the AM, to seize the new day! Peace, RMH

#### To Kathy in SC: Loved the visual that I had of Cooper recumbent over the entire sofa....
To Sophie's Lee: Hope you're finding the new job to your liking.
To Otherlyn: What a treat to see another installment of your saga about The Young Prince.
To Nancy in CT: Ditto to your sentiment about "tricks & treats"!
To Jean Nolan: Many thanks. I haven't forgotten your friend, who was dealing with a significant illness. I hope that life has stabilized for him, his wife, and 14 year old youngster.
To Renee A.: Loved your description of what Barbaro's costume would be in Equine Hevvin'. That's awesome that Loretta Swit is speaking out!
To Jonnagrey: Sorry that your computer is still down. How exasperating this must be for you.
To Harriette: Your poem about George Washington was profoundly moving and the words ran true. May his spirit rest in peace. Like Bobbey's, his death was far too soon.
Hello, Socorro! So grand to see you here on the Big Board today.
To Barb M: Great news about Nala. That must be comforting for our FOB Kathy in SC, too. But I am very sorry about Over Enough needing a repeat scoping. I keep them both in my thought, Barbi.
To Lorraine on Staten Island: Congrats on the impending equine grandma-hood! ####

### Lorraine OMG!!!! He is beautiful...err...handsome!!! WOW!

Congrats on the impending granniness. I too, will be a granny two times next year. Can't wait. Those who know I have a 17 year old son really fumble for words until I say FOALS!

###Robyn...Cooper gave up the coach tonight. He had to get up so many times for trick or treaters at the door, he figured his living room bed would suit him better! ;)

I totally meant "couch", not coach. Sigh. Chocolate overload?

Alex you are only about 6 hours from "somewhere up there", better known as Wisconsin. Have you thought of swinging by and seing a Packer game live? You will see Packer and Brett Farve shirts EVERYWHERE! In fact, the news had a story about a guy from Australia who moved his family to Green Bay for the Packer Season!

Mike C - Thanks for the update on Adore the Gold. I hope we get the opportunity to see him race as a 4 year old. I remember he was something special at the start of his career. (And boy, does that ever seem like ages ago now!)

MAUREEN - where did you hear that news about The Tin Man????? If it's true, we all need to pray for this great champ....

PLEASE LIGHT A CANDLE FOR THE TIN MAN

ARCADIA, Calif. - The Tin Man, the 9-year-old multimillionaire, sustained a fractured knee in an accident after a surgical procedure on Oct. 25, and is in guarded condition at trainer Richard Mandella's Santa Anita stable, Mandella said on Wednesday.

The Tin Man was recovering from exploratory surgery on an ankle when he sustained the injury, according to Mandella and veterinarian Jeff Blea.

"Coming out of anesthesia, he had a difficult time and broke his knee," Mandella said. "He's got a serious fracture in his knee. We're not letting him move around."

The injury means that The Tin Man has been retired from racing, Mandella said.

"It's a sad deal," Mandella said. "Hopefully, it will work out. It's a serious fracture."

Blea said horses rarely are injured after surgery.

"It's one of the inherent risks of horses coming out of anesthesia," Blea said. "This is the second time I've seen it in 15 years. I think his chances of survival are good. It's quite severe, but he's comfortable.

"He's made it this far. He's a good patient. Our job is to make sure that he's comfortable and make sure he lives his life to the fullest."

The surgery was part of a battery of tests that The Tin Man underwent after Mandella and owners Ralph and Aury Todd decided to take the gelding out of training following a second-place finish in the Grade 1 Clement Hirsch Turf Championship on Oct. 6. The Tin Man emerged from that race with body soreness. At the time, Mandella hoped that The Tin Man could return in 2008 and race as a 10-year-old.

Mandella said that the tests revealed possible damage to an ankle, which resulted in the exploratory arthroscopic procedure.

A winner of 13 of 31 starts, 8 stakes, and $3,663,780, The Tin Man had 1 victory in 4 starts this year, the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Hollywood Park. The Tin Man also finished second this year in the Grade 2 American Handicap at Hollywood Park and the Grade 1 Arlington Million at Arlington Park.

Nancy - Go to the Message Board - the discussion is there, & also a reprint of the story which is in the DRF. Time now is 6:29 PM in CA, and I haven't found it anywhere else! Not even at Bloodhorse.com.

God bless The Tin Man!

MAUREEN - I'm rather concerned that he is apparently recuperating "at trainer Richard Mandella's Santa Anita stable," I wish he were in a hospital...

Posted by: Nancy in CT at November 1, 2007 2:41 AM

That Tin Man thing didn't look so good to me, but I am a novice at racing injuries as well. I hope he is okay.

(((((TINNY)))))

I am praying for your successful recovery and happy retirement!

NANCY - I'm also finding that kind of odd. I mean, that The Tin Man's not in a hospital. There must be a reason, tho. From everything I've heard, he's very much loved, & I assume they know best. I was thinking of going to Santa Anita this Saturday - (I'm only about 45 minutes away) to watch another of my favorites, the great Lava Man run. But I'm so concerned about HIM, that I still haven't made a decision about going to watch him run - "live." Now this - with another horse I love so much! Prayers for The Tin Man and his great big heart - we NEED you to get well, boy!

BUTTERFLY BELLE came in fourth in her race, a $50,000 claimer, at Oak Tree today. She was narrowly edged out for the show.
Good running, Dear Girl! It is my hope that Russel Baze will someday have the classy notion to by you and place you in a safe, sweet pasture, to retire in safety and honor. You WERE the horse he rode to his record breaking victory. It was YOU who gave it to him that day. I, and the FOBs will not forget you.

Jonathan Paul is just beginning a 51 month sentence for animal rights terrorism. He burned down the Cavel West horse slaughterhouse in Redmond, Oregon, among other activities. He no longer advocates arson, but is a true believer in helping the animals.

He was interviewed today on Amy Goodman's program, DEMOCRACY NOW, which is on Pacifica Radio. You can listen to her interview with him - an absolute believer in anti-slaughter and who talks about the fact that, even with no operating slaughterhouses here in the US, the horses are just going to Mexico and Canada. I think many of you will find his interview very interesting.

Here is the link (which you can easily find by going to Democracy Now, any time) and it simple to listen to the program of today, 10/31/07.

Being a native Oregonian and knowing Redmond, up above Bend in the high desert country, it grieves me to know that this was happening there, with blood coming out of the sewers as he says.

DARYL SMOLIAK -

The statement about not targeting any other industry, meant such as the cattlemen, I guess it should be more specific.

Please don't get me started on 'sloppy,' when I hear that word all I can think of is GORGEOUS GEORGE.

Sometimes I need change in order to continue, so I did what I needed to do.

It is good to see that the Comment Section is becoming more alive and active.
