    Barbaro Updates: 419

    updates are now here.

Update 2644: $100 goes to CANTER OH, in honor of Ferdinand's Breeders' Cup Classic win, if anyone can note what is particularly cool with the way Ferdinand won the race: 1987 Breeders Cup Classic

Update 2643: As we all get ready for the 2007 Breeders' Cup, I ask you to remember the Breeders Cup Classic of 20 years ago: 1987 Breeders' Cup Classic. One horse, that day, stood above all others in an all star cast horserace ...

Update 2642: A couple of Breeders' Cup scratches, one from the Sprint, one from the Juvenile: Dixie Chatter, Attila's Storm Out of Breeders' Cup.

Update 2641: A windy morning this morning, which had the horses on their toes for sure. The fillies were especially skittish! I had seven to ride, and I managed to hang on thanks to the neck strap. Anyway, a fun morning. Our trainer, Eddie Kenneally, is now heading over to Monmouth to oversee Kelly's Landing's final preparations for the big race on saturday.

Given I was done so early this morning (10 am) I decided to head out to the Kentucky Horse Park. I wanted to see Cigar, Da Hoss and John Henry's memorial (or at least the cards and flowers that had been sent in his honor.) I get to pet Cigar, and see Da Hoss. It was also nice to see many cards honoring John, some of which came from FOBs. I noted cards from Mike C, Harriette G and Mary S to name a few. I also chatted with Robin, who works at the Hall of Champions barn. We had a long chat about the state of racing and related stuff. It was fun. Anyway, it all completed a great morning in Kentucky!

Update 2640: Perrenial leading trainer Tod Pletcher assesses his chances for this year's Breeders' Cup: Pletcher Reviews Breeders' Cup Starters.

    Keep calling.

comes a sense of the earth
    preparing to pull
    in all its roots
    before the real cold comes

    true,the trees look down
upon new graves and new head stones
    of broken dreams
    but above this frey rise
    glorious victories
soaring hearts fresh tears fo joy
    for
    beautiful horses saved just before
    deaths doors..

a huge network-quilted from all manner of shapes and sizes
    deeply caring souls
groups laying the carpet of forever homes
clean and vibrant shelters ,steady good care

to end the slaughter and pick up

    mentioned the film michael clayton
    excellent
    crafted through the lens
    in texure and scope
    of many things
so pertinent in our lives today
    and the
    fascinating tribute
to the great healing powers of
    mother earth and nature
    and her animal kingdom
    that it is everlasting
    and seen in the symbol

    of three sentient horses.

.almost waiting for the hero of the true tale

as his heart is torn apart from the shock of betrayal
all is flying around his head..
the horses mperfelty together yet each in his own space..a trio
    stand elegant
    fierce
yet calm and with a knowing.
.holding some secret some deep love and connection to greater things
    .

like a trinity of love hope and faith

    attributes of a humanistic culture--
dont we cheer for and wish for
    it allto grow and flourish

three horses in mocha and whte cream silver grey..

in the film and we saw them repeat the sequence till
the full weight of their wisdom sat deep in
sound of the audience breathing along with what felt like me

that amidst the corruption of power and greed
a man retrieves his soul in a field ..at dawn
the break of a new day
    where all is possible
    ..we can like
start all over again fresh .
    .new beginning.
    .always try again
    ..to listen again
    ..to this picture of him

    never far away
    Barbaro

three horses greet his searing pain and sense of loss and betrayal
    they look and they listen
    they listen real deep
    speckled muscles mists
    deep warm eyes

    i was shocked that hollywood
    would have put that in
Barbaro reached many corners for sure.. and here we see it again

    redeeming all the pain
    so many thousands have felt
and we have shared on this site

    that we can miss forever
that there is no one to equal his other worldly self

    reminding me of
the chilling truth of war on any level
    someone's blood shed for what

the three horses stood there in that misty
ancient seeming place of a hill
no less..as in my heart for ever now
and bore witness to a man who would not sell his soul
    for anything

    may you gather
    and recall his parting words..
    that of Barbaro
and all the world around him
    gave back

    his people who go on
    and rise above the
    scarlet blood breath
    red tide
    that trickles down and separates
    the widow from the bride

    sleep well great souls
who have given us so much'
close to the door of heaven
    and gold

we never lose what we knew ..
    we rise above

in compassion for those who suffer great losses
    tonight
    of their lives
    yes and many more tonights

    show them
there is a line of rain
    on high... ..
    it is all love
love down upon their heads their manes..
    their fur
    hooves
    tails and wagging tails
    all critters
    stand
    in the glory called

    Good Thursday morning FOBs,

I'm hoping and praying that the tragedy and horror going on in S.CA will end soon. The recent news does say that the winds are dying down and that should help the fire containment effort. I'm glad the people were able to evacuate in time and hope that they all got their animals out too. They depend on their owners to save them.

On another note - I can't believe that I forgot about the Ruffian movie last night. Darn. Well, hopefully there will be a next time.

Martita - thank you for your lovely words.

    Have a wonderful day everyone!

Hiya, FsOB! I just read Hariette's Cherokee Devotional for 10/25 and the words about rain were perfect for coastal CT. It was so rainy thia AM that I went back to sleep for awhile. We need the rain but I sure wish I could push those clouds to So. Cali where the rain is even more vital. What a treat to start the morning with such powerful words from our Poet Laureate, Martita. Wishing each of you a productive day. Peace, RMH

    #### To Laurie H.: That Ms. Montego is a spunky gal, isn't she?
To Sandra: Bless you for your posting yesterday. There are so many of us who were touched by Barbaro and have come to learn about the tragedy of horse slaughter in North America. Isn't this a great place, one that unifies those who "get it"? ####

    Meanwhile, back here:

    MORNING POST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI

    Strategy for Thursday October 25

Congratulations to those who managed to get major media coverage to cover this issue. And thanks to everyone who contributed to make it possible. This is a huge step in creating awareness. Awareness is the only way we will win this battle.

We now know from our poll that we have a lot of support. This is a chance to get the rest of the undecided senators on board. Now that the plants have ceased operation in this county, we must grab this opportunity to push for legislation that will end the transport of horses to slaughter. Use this time wisely…..we are at a critical point and actually have a chance to make a difference!!

Remember….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who in not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico. List For Thursday

Those who voted in support of the Ensign-Byrd Amendment Senate (2005) but have not yet cosponsored the bills

Harry Reid - NV Phone: 202-224-3542 Fax: 202-224-7327

Russ Feingold - WI Phone: (202) 224-5323 Fax (202) 224-2725 Aide: Mike Schmidt

Herb Kohl - WI Phone: (202) 224-5653 Fax: (202) 224-9787 Aide: Phil Karsteing

Elizabeth Dole – NC Phone: 202-224-6342 Fax: 202-224-1100

    Cosponsored S.1915 last year

Senator Charles Schumer - NY Phone: 202-224-6542 Fax: 202-228-3027

James DeMint - SC Phone: 202-224-6121 Fax: 202-228-5143 Aide: Stacy Dillard

Hillary Rodham Clinton - NY Phone: 202-224-4451 Fax : 202-228-0282 Aide: Trevor Dean

Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!

Thanks and have a great day!

I just found this article and thought everyone would like to read it. Priscilla could be a great contact for us. I'm sure there is a website for Graceland with a contact list. She is a good lady with a heart for the horses.

We have the most WONDERFUL News:

The Six Horses have been offered a permanent home by Priscilla Presley at
    Graceland.

Presley as in Elvis. Yes, you heard it right. We just hit the rescue
    jackpot!

The Six Horses Saved From Slaughter in Maine will be heading to Memphis, TN
    in short order.

The Six will be kept together as a herd, and never ridden, but allowed to
live out their days together, in pasture, and in peace. In luxury. With
    many carrots. Excellent care. Forever.

They will always be “Six Horses Awaiting Carrots, Not Slaughter.”

There will be many more details to come, and key people to thank for this
incredible opportunity for the Six, but please know that your work, support,
caring, donations, T shirt and sweatshirt purchases and overall help has
made this possible. This has been a community-to- nationwide effort right
    from the start.

I will keep you all updated regarding the departure date and their
transition to a life of luxury and permanent idyllic life.

This is so cool, I think I’m dreaming. This is not a joke. It is real.
    Celebrate!

I miss you guys like crazy. had a miled Jessie crisis yesterday and on the way to the Vets, not even guessing what the outrcome would be, I lamented to "loss" of both my Circle of Grey support and the support of the FoBs....really a feeling like being tethered just off the surface of the earth with no hope of returning, just watching from afar.
I print out of the lists, I call... I gnash my teeth,
feel the time rushing by and am diligent in prayer to God that people see HS for the evil that it is and that we END IT. THIS YEAR> We'll go on next year and the next and whatever...I just fail to believe that this trench warfare will go on forever, but more stupid things have happened, right? I mean, GW was elected, wasn't he???

Jessie is OK. We're not sure why she was lame on her back R leg...just a little joke from the cosmos to keep me on my psychic toes, as it were.
    Love to all, miss you...j

Ok...FOBS...I have a somewhat idea...would love to hear some feedback, etc.

Reusable shopping bags...and on the bags, help horse rescues, stop horse slaughter, help all animal rescues, Run With Barbaro, etc.

Cloth, large shopping bags...use instead of paper or plastic....use them everywhere we shop, saving our planet, saving overfilled landfields, just stores save money.....

But....if the stores save money from the public using over and over the cloth shopping bags, they donate a percentage to the rescues.

Lucille (Really920 at the DB) asked me to post this here at Comments. (Crossposted from ABR DB, 16122.1)

Hey all this is an email I received from Nancy Perry after a long conversation we had yesterday. I believe this email is for all of the FOB'S since I brought you up often. We must not waiver we must stay strong and we must stop horse slaughter once and for all:)

I really appreciate all the work you guys have been doing -- and am so impressed by the level of organization! Please know that when we walk in
to offices on the Hill, we can almost feel whether or not they've been receiving calls. They instantly know what we're talking about, of
course, but they often will relay how many calls they get and they do have tremendous respect for your efforts. And...they know that these are
their own constituents who are calling.

It takes a long time to move things along in Congress and, given what is happening to horses, I sure do understand the frustration you all feel
that we have not yet gotten a ban on horse slaughter (and export!). I have new hope I haven't had before now because the calls are yielding great movement forward with new cosponsors. This is a signal to our opposition and to the leadership that this bill MUST pass. I think our opposition feels that "the writing is on the wall" but they are going to kick and scream right to the bitter end.

Please, keep up the great work. I know it is hard, but don't let up.

They say it is always darkest before the dawn...I think that is the case here. We must not only keep up the pressure but we must increase it.
Focus on the leadership and on your own Senators and we will be pushing from here. Not a day goes by that we don't work hard to think of additional ways to move things along. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Extra AWI/SAPL SENATOR TARGET LIST in lieu of
extra Thursday 10/25 nat'l target list (HAHS)

Inexplicably I have been unable to access the daily list from the HAHS Yahoo Group Site; so until if and when I can, am posting the AWI/SAPL target list, that HAHS has been referring to as coming from their strategy people.

This list is the source of the "special lists" included with the extra HAHS lists that I post at ABR daily. (have edited to show those who have already cosponsored since the list was created; need not contact them at this time)

If/when you have done all your faxing and calling (per ABR Strategy and your group leader) on any given day and still want to do more, suggest you compare this list with the contacts you've made that day, and go ahead and contact more from this target list.

    1. Evan Bayh (D/IN) ph: 202-224-5623 fax: 202-228-1377 - Senator Bayh signed on as cosponsor 10/18/07

Extra Thursday 10/25 National Target List (HAHS)

Sorry this is so late, had trouble accessing the HAHS list. Meanwhile I had posted the AWI/SAPL Senator Target List, that you can work from if you wish. It is also on the DB in the antislaughter folder. (Today's HAHS list is Representatives.)

FIRST - Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all your calls. IMO - convey the website www.vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - ask them to look at PR dated 10/9. Tell them to look for a copy of PR dated 10/9 that should have arrived at their offices last week.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

    800-828-0498

    800-459-1887

    800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy - and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators:

    1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

    2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

    3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

    4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

    5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

    Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Thursday 10/25) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention HR 503, ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the current/new ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind.

The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

Prior HS History: All the Reps on the list voted for HR 503 last year - and Ehlers and Thompson cosponsored. All of these Reps voted YES on HR 249.

In addition to using the ABR Strategy spiel posted above - (IMO) - THANK them all for voting YES on HR 503 last session, and remind them that the Bill passed in the House but died (in Senate Committee) last year and needs to be enacted this session. THANK those who voted YES on HR 249 earlier this session; remind them that this protects ONLY wild equines, and we still need HR 503 for the rest of them.

I remember him and he was a beautiful great horse. what a shame for him to come to that end.

He has one "crate sore" left. He knocked the scab off while getting in my truck Sunday. We kept it wrapped til Tuesday, looking much better since we stopped wrapping it. All in all, he is doing really well. He is even learning to actually sit, something he never did before.

Here is the other part of the six horses story. The website is worth a visit.

    CJ.,
I will post it on the DB.

    All:
Many of you know that the Six Horses Saved From Slaughter in Maine have been
offered a home at Graceland. It is thrilling. The transition there will
happen soon (we need Coggins bloodwork done, and other such readying), but
    apparently not soon enough.

    THE IMMEDIATE SITUATION:

The Six have been staying at a farm in Dixfield, ME. The farm is being sold
The Closing is this coming Monday, Oct. 29th. The buyers initially told
me the Six could stay on the farm until they were shipped to Graceland.

Last night the buyers changed their minds. They want the Six Horses off the
property by the closing Monday the 29th. Their ‘lawyer’ told them they
needed to have the horses off the property. I offered to rent the place for
2 weeks, since these buyers will not move in for a while, it will be empty.
    But they said no, and:

They told me in a voicemail message that if I didn’t have the horses off the
property by the Closing on Monday, they would let the horses loose.

Yes, these people are complete jerks. I still have the voicemail message to
prove it. But we can talk about them later.

Right now, I need action. I will bring the Six here to my place in Palermo
on SATURDAY but haven’t the proper setup.

With help, I can surely get some temporary shelter and pasture cobbled
together for the next week or so until they are transported.

I need help here at Adagio Farm THURSDAY, FRIDAY and SATURDAY to get the
place Six-ready. If you can come help, call me on my cell. I am too busy
to respond to emails, so please don’t email. Call only if you can help. Or
just show up. I don’t have time to chat. I need action, and I need it
    mostly THURSDAY and FRIDAY.

I am going to get the Six Horses here SATURDAY one way or the other. The
sellers are our foster family, the Donovans, and we owe it to them to move
the horses out SATURDAY so as not to put their sale in jeopardy.

WHAT WILL HELP: People who can Rock ‘n Roll on this. Carpenters. People
to help with fencing. People to run to the fencing supply store and other
places to pick up stuff needed. Strong backs to pick up and deliver 200
bales hay from Mt Vernon. Workers to help ready the place in general.
Someone to ply me with liquor to calm my nerves. I will have my little
breakdown shortly after the Six go to Graceland.

I know we can do this with Six Horses supporters help. Please come help the
    Six.
And when the Hollywood movie is eventually made, perhaps you can play
    yourself.

    Repost

CHERYL, RENEE & HARRIETTE - thank you for your kind wishes. After a long conversation with Maizie's vet (who was very affirming to me in saying that I had done a wonderful job of treating a difficult condition in an elderly cat for a year...), there is nothing left to be done because her kidneys are about shut down...

PRINCESS MAIZIE LEE will be crossing the Rainbow Bridge at home tomorrow at approximately 3 pm. She will finally meet Felix in person, and will be reunited with her former housemates, Hebegebe and Mr. C-C Bird.

    Janice,
We have two dogs right now and never thought we would have a cat until we went to an adoption for some cats that were hoarded. There were over 100 living in filth. Magnus has three legs and the people at the adoption said that people were calling him disgusting - imagine that! Well that's all we had to hear and the rest is history. He is so loving and I swear he is a cat/dog. He always greets us with a "meow". You never have to look for him because he is always with you. So affectionate. It's nice to hear that there is another convert - lol. I never thought that I would love a cat the way I love him. Goodluck with Kaiser!

    Strategy for Friday October 26

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND…..FREE FOR ALL FRIDAY
This is the day that you can go over the lists from the week and catch up on calls that you may have missed. It also gives some of you the chance to give another call to someone that you feel may be close and just needs that “extra” push. Please share any information that you think might help others. Good luck and let us know how you make out!!

Remember….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who is not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico.

The only way we will win this battle is with more awareness. We now know from our poll that we have a lot of support in the senate. This is a chance to get the rest of the undecided senators on board. Now that the plants have ceased operation in this county, we must grab this opportunity to push for legislation that will end the transport of horses to slaughter. Use this time wisely…..we are at a critical point and actually have a chance to make a difference!!

Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!

Thanks and have a great Breeder’s Cup weekend!! Safe journey to all those racing and to all of you traveling to Monmouth.
    Shelley and Debra

Hiya, FsOB. Yes, I wholeheartedly agree with Terri C.'s suggestion that one of the Breeders Cup announcers should mention what happened to Ferdinand. I had been totally ignorant of his disgraceful demise until I joined the FsOB last year. I can see that I'm not the only person who didn't know that or about horse slaughter when I first came here!
My late Mother's cousin sent me a beautiful flyer today from the Old Friends/Dream Chase Farm in KY. She wanted to let me know that they've opened a B&B there. Isn't that awesome?

    #### To dear Nancy in CT: My sympathies to you. Miss Maizie is such a gorgeous cat. You have been such a loving Mum to her. Please know, Nancy, that you, Seamus, and Princess Maizie are in my thoughts tonight. You are not alone!
Hello to Marg in Maine! It's turned much cooler here, I can only imagine how cold it must be getting in northern New England. How 'bout those Red Sox, Marg?
To Joanne Frank: What a great story about how you and Magnus came together. It's so nice seeing you here again, Joanne.
A very happy birthday to Noah Brillianthawk today and to Nomi Seagreen Eyes Gilbert tomorrow!
To Jonnagrey: Glad to read that Jesse is OK. How nervewracking this problem must've been for you.
To Kathy in SC re. Cooper: I was wondering how you were doing while I was driving to RI today. Sounds like he is really accommodating beautifully.
Right on, Joan Roya! I agree with your posting about the wasteful use of resources in our country. Everything is treated as though it is disposable.

HSUS ACTION ALERT - call your Senators to support the Akaka Amendment to the Farm Bill

    http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=16186.1

    excerpt from HSUS Action Alert:

Help Protect Pets -- Call Your U.S. Senators Today!

We're halfway there! This summer, the U.S. House of Representatives included language in its Farm Bill that would prohibit the use in research of dogs and cats obtained from "random source" Class B dealers, who may steal pets or fraudulently obtain them through "free to good home" ads. Now, we need the Senate to act. Please help protect pets by taking action today.

The Senate is expected to vote on its version of the Farm Bill any day now. It is crucial that we ensure that this vital protection is included in the Senate's Farm Bill as well.

Please make brief, polite phone calls right away to your two U.S. Senators -- Evan Bayh at (202) 224-5623 and Richard Lugar at (202) 224-4814 -- and urge them to support Sen. Akaka's amendment to the Farm Bill to protect pets. [end of excerpt]

This email refers to the IN Senators because it was addressed to me.

Pls call YOUR two Senators per this HSUS Action Alert. If you don't know contact info for your Senators, please use this website:
