    Barbaro Updates: 413

    updates are now here.

Update 2611: Street Sense is soon scheduled to depart Churchill Downs for his final time as he attempts to close out an exception (if short) career: Street Sense Headed to Monmouth.

$100 will go to CANTER MI, in honor of Brave Miner, if someone can tell me when the first claiming races were run in the United States, and why claiming races were first run in this country.

Update 2610: Francois Parisel is now the trainer of record for Biancone's runners in the Breeders' Cup: Biancone's Breeders' Cup Horses Transferred to Francois Parisel.

Update 2609: Steve Haskin looks at those Breeders' Cup horses who have already raced over the Monmouth Park track. He also looks at who we can get excited about for the future: Steve Haskin's BC Countdown: Pletcher Could be a Shore Thing This Year, excerpt:

The horses who normally would achieve long-range star power with a Classic victory -- Street Sense, Any Given Saturday, and Hard Spun -- are all scheduled to be retired to Darley at Jonabell after the race, so it is hard for the public to embrace them at this point knowing they're never going to see them again. Nothing has been made official regarding Any Given Saturday, but the chances of seeing him next year would appear to be slim. Street Sense, with a victory in the Classic, would have been a major star and attraction next year, but that's not going to happen. Trainer Larry Jones said that Hard Spun is just now coming into his own, is getting stronger, and learning how to settle in his races. There is no doubt he would have made an awesome 4-year-old, but we'll never know. Curlin certainly has star appeal, but his future is still undetermined. Still, he at least provides a ray of hope for next year.

I saw Curlin this morning, walking off the racetrack with his pony as I was also doing the same, without a pony. He looked very composed, and quite big!

Update 2608: Some pictures of Teuflesburg, who received a gift basket from FOBs yesterday: Update on Teuflesberg.

Update 2607: A warm, but sometimes wet, morning this morning at Keeneland. I rode eight and managed to stay pretty dry which was a feat in of itself! A pleasant mornings work. Everyone was in good humor and the horses went nicely. Linda's Lad shipped out this morning along with Gerry, they are off to Canada for a big stake on sunday.

It continues to remain darker in the mornings, I am assuming the clocks will change at some point! We have a couple of runners this afternoon, but I think I may take the afternoon off from the races today. Just a nice to day relax!

Update 2606: Biancone agrees to his one year suspension which will begin November 1 and will not be trainer of record for horses he entered in the Breeders' Cup: Biancone Agrees to One-Year Suspension, excerpts:

As part of the agreement, Biancone has agreed to withdraw as the trainer of record for any horses currently under his care and will not be the trainer of record for any horses entered in the 2007 Breeders' Cup World Championships Oct. 26-27 at Monmouth Park in New Jersey.

    and

Biancone is the first person suspended in Kentucky under new rules that prohibit a trainer who is suspended for six months or more from benefiting financially from his horses while under suspension for a Class A medication violation. The penalties were put in place at the same time as the state's medication rules were tightened.

Under the rule, Biancone will have to transfer his horses to trainers with whom he has no financial ties.

    Keep calling.

    Happy Thursday morning FOBs

The weekend is getting closer. That still gives us 2 days of talking to aides re: federal legislation to prevent our horses being shipped to Mexico or Canada for slaughter purposes. We can call on weekends too and leave messages.

    Have a wonderful day everyone!!

My prayers for all in need.

Hiya, FsOB! Wishing each of you a most productive day. Wow, as the morning unfolds it is increasingly foggy here. I can only see the harbour in New London through a deepening haze. Quite lovely, but I wonder what this means for my commute? Argh! Peace, RMH

    #### To Liz, I'll try to re-send tonight. Yes, it's weird what's occurring with our e-mail here at home.
To Skyler: Did you try some sort of small chew toy? You might want to visit Pet Supplies Plus or Petco. Kita likes to chew on the bonelike chews that I buy for her there.
To Lisa Leach: Yikes, that much snow in October! I simply couldn't handle it.

    MORNING POST SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI

    Strategy for Thursday October 18

A huge thank you to everyone who joined in Tuesday’s National Call In Day. Hopefully this will increase awareness to the seriousness of this situation.

Since the beginning of the year, approximately 30,000 American horses have been shipped to Mexico for slaughter. They have been shipped in deplorable conditions and have been sent to slaughter in the most horrendous ways possible. Most are shipped through El Paso TX and Los Lunas NM. But we must tread lightly. Pro slaughter people are using this information as propaganda to justify why we are wrong in closing the plants in America!! It is a very fine line when talking to legislators. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses more than the conditions in Mexico

The only way we will win this battle is with more awareness. We now know from our poll that we have a lot of support in the senate. This is a chance to get the rest of the undecided senators on board. Now that the plants have ceased operation in this county, we must grab this opportunity to push for legislation that will end the transport of horses to slaughter. Use this time wisely…..we are at a critical point and actually have a chance to make a difference!!

    Skyler,
I am unsure of what size puppy you have gotten yourself all black & blue by, my rotty mix made folks stop me and ask, "OMG, Dora, has your boyfriend beat you dear?" I had the bruises up & down my fingers to the armpits. She (Alex), I think attempted to EAT me.

I got her the nylabones, we then went up in size as she grew to first the flexible ones then the med durable chewies then the giant ones for lg breeds. She also uses the dental ones that have nubbies, she still enjoys playing and gnawing on them. Edible ones are good for noshing too. hotdog bones, egg & cheese bones, they stink, but do not stain the carpet when they chew them, or make them choke like the rolled rawhide chewies. Kong makes good strong chewies too.

I do know she tried to ingest the smaller ones, she could break off pieces when she became too big for them~~I then threw them away. I hope your baby grows out of this soon. My goodness but it does bring alot of talk when you look like you have been attacked! can ya say werewolf? :0)

(what breed is the pup? I have been mostly staying on forum, sorry to be out of loop)

Prayers for all creatures great and small

A question for Liz (UK): I watched TVG's International Racing program yesterday including a chase from Punchestown. A horse named I'll Call You Back fell at the last (or next to last) hurdle and did not rise. The men with the screen ran out.

Nothing from the commentator, then the program cut away--I've Googled and Yahoo'd and can find nothing. Jessica Harrington was the trainer, it was the 16.15 race Oct. 17 race.

Do you have any news? I'll Call You Back was a gelding, 8 years old.

Thanks for any news you can find.

    Good morning everyone,

Each day is more critical than the last in our quest to end slaughter and the transport of horses across our borders. Please make this a priority today and find someone to share this with. Whether it's a co-worker, neighbor, someone helping you in a store, etc, take a moment and share our mission. Awareness is key here and the more people who know, potentially the more people we'll have to help.

Robyn and Dora, thanks for your suggestions. Yes, I've tried this and it helps at times. I'm racking up points at PetSmart and PetCo with each dollar spent. She's just a little hyper right now and I know she'll grow out of it eventually. She's an 11 week old Border Collie pup. Tons of energy, inquisitive, etc. Susan E. has met her so she knows how captivating little Emma is.

Make it a productive day, a day closer to ending this horrible practice. Share our list today with others, so they may help.

Vigil reminder - Tomorrow, Friday October 19th at 2pm EsT - for John Henry.

    ##
This is from the forum. I copied the post in case some can't get there.

    http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=15881.1

    Dear Friends,

My husband and I have returned from Kentucky. Our trip had been planned for months. I had looked so forward to visiting John Henry. Then, just weeks before we were to leave he became very ill. I kept saying, "Hang On! John Henry - I'm Coming!"

I was so thankful to learn he had stabilized. Updates had ceased so I felt sweet relief. On Sunday, October 7, 2007, as we approached the park, I readily noticed the flag at half staff. I exclaimed, "Oh! No! - did something happen to John Henry?"

We got to the Hall of Champions and there he was. A volunteer was in his stall feeding him one peppermint behind another. John Henry was eating every one he was given. He walked out into his paddock area and stood by the fence looking at all of us through the fence slat. We all wanted him to lift his head for a picture. He did, but it was for a split second. He resumed his careful watch through the fence slat.

I later found out that the entire state of KY honors the memory of soldiers killed in the war by flying the flag at half staff. Sadly, there had been a tragic loss and the flags were dropped throughout KY. I was very moved to know this was done statewide. What a tribute!

Monday, October 8, 2007, we arrived at the park and promptly went to the Parade of Breeds. Afterward, we began walking around the park and spotted John Henry on his walk. Barbara, a Kentucky Horse Park employee (and the one who has walked him so much), was once again letting John Henry go where his heart desired. There were three people walking behind them so my husband and I joined the happy throng. This was around noon. It was very hot. John Henry seemed to do better than I did. He walked around barns on the back part of the park, across concrete lots, in grassy areas, and under trees by the fence. We walked along so excited to be walking with John Henry. And, he didn't seem to mind that a mini-crowd was following his every step. In fact, he may have been amused by it all. He was alert, had a good appetite, his ears were up, etc. He was very much in control - so much so that as he walked across a concrete lot, he spotted a Coke machine. He headed directly to it and stuck his muzzle down where the Coke products drop after coins are inserted and a selection is made. I really think had a Coke been there, he would have made an attempt to retrieve it. What a moment!

The most poignant time, in light of what would happen in only a few short hours, occurred as he passed the end of his paddock area where his grave would later be dug. He rounded the corner approaching the pathway to the Hall of Champions and stopped. He would not budge. Even with Barbara trying to coax him, he stood firmly, not giving an inch. He looked around and continued standing there for at least 45 seconds, and maybe as long as 90 seconds. He was standing very close to what would become his grave. When he decided to move, he walked up the pathway with very deliberate steps passing his own Hall of Champion Plaque and then, inside the barn area. He stood in the center and I was allowed to give him the chocolate donut I had brought him. He ate every bite and seemed to really enjoy it. He received love from well wishers. His stall door had "Get Well" cards and personal notes taped from adoring fans.

We came back later and his stall door was open and he was standing with a park employee halfway out. I was able to give him a kiss, rub his ear and head. This was about 2:15. Such a precious time.

There was a woman from CA present who had asked her boyfriend to take her to the KY Horse Park to see John Henry for her birthday. She had been several times over the years to see him and is a huge fan. She was very tearful. It was really an emotional time. We all were standing in the presence of such a great athlete who had inspired many and was so beloved and yet, the years had taken a toll and time and health were not on his side any longer. I was trying to really take it all in and relish those tender moments. As I turned to leave, I kept looking back saying, "Bye for now."

The next morning the Lexington paper headlines read, "The Champion is now The Legend." I could not believe it. But, oh how thankful I am to God for ordering my steps so that I went directly there. Had I not, I would not have seen him. We were so blessed to see people loving on him, staff meeting his every need, fans remembering him all across the U.S., watching him eat and enjoy the food, him directing people and as "in charge" as he had always been. He had a good day from all that I was privy to knowing.

We returned Thursday, October 11, 2007, to visit his grave. It was very hard to approach the Hall of Champions and then, confront the closed stall door. He had many flowers that had arrived. People were walking through - many tear-filled eyes. As I signed the banner near his grave, a gentleman came up to share with us. He had driven in to bring John some goodies to eat not realizing he had been euthanized. I felt so bad for him. He was very choked up. From the more mature to the very young, John Henry touched lives and people were coming to pay their respects to this great champion.

As the time for his memorial service approaches, I wanted to offer some comfort to you with this first-hand account of our time with him just hours before he was gone. I will never forget those special moments with John Henry and the privilege of taking that last walk with him. I feel so blessed. May it help comfort you in some small way to know, at least from this eye witness, that his last day was enveloped in love. Lots of love was given and John Henry was most receptive. He received it all on his terms - and we wouldn't have it any other way, would we?

    Fondly,

    Dia

The 4-year-old son of Five Star Day, owned by Darley Stable, incurred fractured sesamoids and a condylar fracture of his right front during the running of the 6-furlong race on the Polytrack. I'll see if I can find out. It's frustrating when you can't find out what has happened to them. Sometimes with the jumpers and hurdlers they are just winded or very tired and can lie there for twenty minutes. They always put up the screens and on British terrestrial TV they have a policy never to replay an incident showing a horse injured. If there is time they do show horses getting up when they are OK. Most injuries occur in the National Hunt races - but last week on the flat a Godolphin runner, Mariotta, broke down "badly" as the commentator put it. The Godolphin website later said he had been injured and that vets had treated him on the course, but now his name has been removed from their list of horses and I fear for what happened to him. I'll get back to you.

I have just looked at the reports of the race in the Irish press. I'll Call You Back is shown as having fallen at the last - but that's all. There are reports about Jessie Harrington's horses, but no mention of him. I don't know if that's good or bad news. Unfortunately, Mrs Harrington doesn't appear to have a website, so that doesn't help - but I'll keep my eyes and ears open for any mention of the horse.

Extra Thursday 10/18 National Target List (HAHS)

FIRST - Here's something to add to ALL your contacts please - and the 800 numbers for your convenience on all your calls.

IMO - convey the website www.vetsforequinewelfare.org to all your contacts - ask them to look at PR dated 10/9. Tell them to watch for a copy of PR at their offices this week now that the legislators have returned.

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

    800-828-0498

    800-459-1887

    800-614-2803

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy - and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators:

    1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

    2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

    3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

    4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

    5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

    Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Thursday 10/18) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention HR 503, ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the current/new ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind.

The closure of Cavel is a HUGE changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

Prior HS History: All the Reps on this list voted for HR 503 last year, except Rep. Hastert, who was then Speaker of the House and didn't vote. Their votes on HR 249 are shown. In addition to the ABR Strategy spiel posted above - (IMO) - THANK them all for voting YES on HR 503 last session, and remind them that the Bill passed in the House but died (in Senate Committee) last year and needs to be enacted this session. THANK those who voted YES on 249 earlier this session; remind them that this protects ONLY wild equines, and we still need 503 for the rest of them.

Crossposting this lengthy post from the DB - thought the Famblee here would want to read it. Eyewitness account of John Henry's Last Day

    http://forums.prospero.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=15881.1

Walking with John Henry / His Last Walk

    Dear Friends,

My husband and I have returned from Kentucky. Our trip had been planned for months. I had
looked so forward to visiting John Henry. Then, just weeks before we were to leave he became
very ill.

A volunteer was in his stall feeding him one
peppermint behind another. John Henry was eating every one he was given. He walked out into
his paddock area and stood by the fence looking at all of us through the fence slat. We all wanted
him to lift his head for a picture. He did, but it was for a split second. He resumed his careful
    watch through the fence slat.

I later found out that the entire state of KY honors the memory of soldiers killed in the war by
flying the flag at half staff. Sadly, there had been a tragic loss and the flags were dropped
throughout KY. I was very moved to know this was done statewide. What a tribute!

Monday, October 8, 2007, we arrived at the park and promptly went to the Parade of Breeds.
Afterward, we began walking around the park and spotted John Henry on his walk. Barbara, a
Kentucky Horse Park employee (and the one who has walked him so much), was once again
letting John Henry go where his heart desired. There were three people walking behind them so
my husband and I joined the happy throng. This was around noon. It was very hot. John Henry
seemed to do better than I did. He walked around barns on the back part of the park, across
concrete lots, in grassy areas, and under trees by the fence. We walked along so excited to be
walking with John Henry. And, he didn't seem to mind that a mini-crowd was following his
every step.

The most poignant time, in light of what would happen in only a few short hours, occurred as he
passed the end of his paddock area where his grave would later be dug. He rounded the corner
approaching the pathway to the Hall of Champions and stopped. He would not budge. Even with
Barbara trying to coax him, he stood firmly, not giving an inch. He looked around and continued
standing there for at least 45 seconds, and maybe as long as 90 seconds. He was standing very
close to what would become his grave. When he decided to move, he walked up the pathway
with very deliberate steps passing his own Hall of Champion Plaque and then, inside the barn
area. He stood in the center and I was allowed to give him the chocolate donut I had brought him.
He ate every bite and seemed to really enjoy it. He received love from well wishers. His stall
door had "Get Well" cards and personal notes taped from adoring fans.

We came back later and his stall door was open and he was standing with a park employee
halfway out. I was able to give him a kiss, rub his ear and head. This was about 2:15. Such a
    precious time.

There was a woman from CA present who had asked her boyfriend to take her to the KY Horse
Park to see John Henry for her birthday. She had been several times over the years to see him and
is a huge fan.

The next morning the Lexington paper headlines read, "The Champion is now The Legend." I
could not believe it. But, oh how thankful I am to God for ordering my steps so that I went
directly there. Had I not, I would not have seen him. We were so blessed to see people loving on
him, staff meeting his every need, fans remembering him all across the U.S., watching him eat and enjoy the food, him directing people and as "in charge" as he had always been. He had a
good day from all that I was privy to knowing.

We returned Thursday, October 11, 2007, to visit his grave. It was very hard to approach the Hall
of Champions and then, confront the closed stall door. He had many flowers that had arrived.
People were walking through - many tear-filled eyes. As I signed the banner near his grave, a
gentleman came up to share with us. He had driven in to bring John some goodies to eat not
realizing he had been euthanized. I felt so bad for him. He was very choked up. From the more
mature to the very young, John Henry touched lives and people were coming to pay their respects
    to this great champion.

As the time for his memorial service approaches, I wanted to offer some comfort to you with this
first-hand account of our time with him just hours before he was gone.

    Fondly,

    Dia

Yes, Bill OReilly is the most watched and most powerful man in the news. If we could get him on board it would be a GREAT thing. He would want a representative (or so) to come on and talk. Lets all call and e-mail and blitz him. Knowing Bill (well, I dont really know him but watch him most nights) he would also have a person to give the other side of the coin. He calls it fair and balanced. I dont really think we can do this but what the heck? We are Barbaros people and we try 150%.

Repostong this from yesterday's Comments - want to give this maximum exposure. THANK YOU SANDRA for posting this. CJ

A few years ago in the city we live in my brother lived in an area that was grandfathered in for horses. He had 3 acres and 2 horses. Ond day a man stopped to ask directions on which highway he needed to take to a slaughter plant that was open. He told my brother he was taking a horse to a slaughter place. The horse was in a trailer and was in horrible shape. Skin stretched over bones and empty sad eyes. He could hardly stand. My brother told him he would give him the same money he could get and would save money on gas. So the man said okay. The horse was so weak they could hardly get him out of the trailer-he fell several times. After a few months the horse looked great (my brother called him Buster) and his eyes sparkled. My brothers 4 kids, who were very young kissed him and patted him and he was so gentle with them. Eventually he was sold to a girl that was a rodeo parade rider. She fell in love with him and stabled him outside of town going out every day to ride him. A year later I happened to go to a big rodeo parade here. And there was Buster. He was beautiful and had a saddle with silver on it and he didnt just walk-he pranced. Buster was so proud and he looked like "hey, look at me". Every horse we save I see Buster.

I wrote Bill OReilly. I will call this afternoon. It would be the best thing that has happened in our fight. We are contacting politicians now. Most listen-some do not and some I think dont care. However, we need to get to the people as surveys show 80% are against slaughtering our horses for foreign comsumpsion. Many, many Americians are not aware of the situation. I believe if they knew they would be for us. We need desperately to get this out to the people. I told Bill that we understand he would have a person on the other side as he is fair and balanced and that would be fine. By the way I mentioned the French are eating our Americian horse steaks. Bill has had conflict with France as he doesnt think they back America (after we liberated them in WW2 and have 17,000 Americian soldiers buried there) and for a while he was asking people to boycott France. Please phone and e-mail Bill both as I believe it would be the death of slaughter. I told him we could send a video .

###Liz (UK)--thank you for checking for me. I was watching International Racing today and at Punchestown ANOTHER horse fell, last hurdle before the finish. HE didn't get up either.

My heart was in my mouth (where it has been spending a lot of time lately--ack!) and the announcer (not the race caller) came on and said, "He's down but I think he's just winded," and then came the picture of the horse without saddle and pad, being led away, walking well and obviously without injury.

The announcer said, "Oh, that's very good to see. Yesterday I'll Call You Back fell and was down a long time, but he got up, too."

So, WHEW!!--and my heart can go back where it belongs ;o)

Thank you, however, for checking for me, Liz. These darned horses sure keep us hopping, don't they, the stinkers.

Pictures of Teuflesberg, aka JoJo, eating peppermints. He looks quite comfortable. And rather familiar, with that white on his face. Many prayers to him and his owners for his speedy recovery.

Retirement Home for Rodeo Bucking Horses

There's a DB Rescue Thread re a bucking horse (being rescued; YAY!) - and this interesting info was posted by Lynda P - a retirement facility for bucking horses at the ranch of Ty Murray (pro rodeo guy); also mentions that several other pro rodeo riders provide retirement for bucking horses.

Money, greed, took BRAVE MINER'S LIFE!
He had a home, a caring home, yet the owner wanted one more run, one more race, and it was the last one for Brave Miner...So heartbreaking!

    Goodnight Barbaro

Help us, push us, nudge us, we thank you for your inspiration, and your fight for life. We love you, and never, never will be forgotten.

    Goodnight Famblee/Fans of Barbaro

Please remember our rescues, our Fallen Angels, the wildlife, and each other.

I pray daily for this nightmare to stop, and to protect our horses and animals, and I pray daily for all of you, THE FOBS.

Getting ready to take Chief to get his annual shots. CRINGE! He has had his anxiety drops. My 80 pound macho man (he thinks) just goes to pieces at the sight of the vets office. Havent decided whether to take him inside (muzzled) or have the vet come to the parking lot as she usually does. He has gone inside a few times and does fairly well until we go into the LITTLE room. Then he shakes and panics (by this time he has pawed his muzzle off). The vet offers him a doggy treat and he spits it out like she is trying to poison him. Well, we have gone through this for 12 years. I hope we have to go through this for a few more years. ###I hope everyone is calling and e-mailing Oreilly. stress France. He dislikes France intensely.

SANDRA - I know you must dread Chief's visits to the vet, and I really DO feel sorry for you...but you have a way of making it sound sooooooo funny!

What breed of dog is he? He must be related to my cat, Sir Seamus the Shy - I have a vet whose practice is dedicated to house calls (thank God!), and she has to catch the 16-pound orange tabby Seamus in a giant butterfly net in order to treat him.

    Good evening Family

Just wanted to share this with you.
My daughter went out to get the mail. She came in and said "mom, you have a magazine with Barbaro all over it" (she loves Barbaro too)
I had no idea what she was talking about as she handed me the small magazine. Sure enough, Barbaro all over the front. It was an Exclusively Equine Holiday Gift Guide!!! My daughter said,"it doesnt have your name on it, it has someone else's and or to current resident on it" So, I turned it over and sure enough, there was someone else's name on it just like she said. It was the right address. I have lived here for two years and NEVER received anything from Exclusively Equine before. HOW STRANGE I would get one this year and with Barbaro all over the front. Inside is a two page display of all things Barbaro, even the Beanie Baby. I have no clue how I came to receive this, but I have a feeling a big bay horse may have had something to do with it.
There are SO MANY great items inside, if you get a chance to get one. Now, I just have to come up with a small fortune so I can buy everything in it...LOL

    The Barbaro Effect!

    Love to all,

    Verna

has anybody answered Alex's quiz question yet, re the history of claiming races? I've been googling, yahoo-ing and dogpiling for a while now to no avail, but did turn up an interesting 3-part article on history of racing. No answer to the question here, but interesting reading.

ARGH! EEK! OK, Alex, you win, I surrender...

I am cross-eyed from trying to find the answer (I need new glasses), and I had the brilliant idea that the answers might be "hidden" amongst the links on the left side of this page...and they may well be, but I couldn't find them. DO I GET POINTS FOR BEING PERSISTENT/STUBBORN?

I did find this comment among Alex's FAQs...

"Think of claiming races as a means for owners and trainers to "self-handicap" their horses."

ALEX - can't find the date, and this is just a guess: Were claiming races first held to open up ownership to those who were not part of the financial "upper crust"?

YOU ARE REALLY DRIVING ME NUTS WITH THIS ONE...it was a piece of cake when my answer "Mike Rea" was the winner so many months ago!

Hiya, FsOB! Lots of folks here today and that's grand to see. Thank you, Alex, for the gorgeous photos of Teuflesberg. What an amazingly sleek and glossy coat he has! And that big "pinky" spot on his nose ... you all can imagine which Big Bay One that sight brought to mind.
Many thanks to Mary S. for sharing Dia's remembrance of her last visit with John Henry. What a funny horse, stopping by the Coke machine. I was anticipating that he kicked the machine. He was a steel drivin' man to the end. And how eerie that he stopped where he would later be memorialized, surely he knew....

    #### To Mary S., Lou Ann in PA, and Maribel: I probably can't be at home at 2 PM tomorrow, but I'll be sending thoughts to JH's spirit during his vigil. Maribel, I plan to buy some doughnuts at the Flanders (CT) Doughnut Shop to honour John Henry's memory.
To Angel Dee Mirich: Please don't even think of leaving us. If Martita is our Poet Laureate, then you are one of our Guardian Angels of The Barbaro Nation! We need you and so do the horses!
To Dora J. Crow: Great seeing you here, I've missed you very much. I've had great luck with the Nylabones with some of my brood of Huskies and hope that they work well for Skyler's pup.
To CJ: Thanks for reposting Sandra's heartfelt vignette from yesterday re. her brother's having saved Buster the Horse. That is just the kind of story that all the Congressional aides need to hear.
To Sophie's Lee: Kudos on the new job!
To Maribel: Very sorry that Hans is having continued chest discomfort. My Uncle had the same difficulty. I'm glad that Hans will be seeing the cardiologist for a re-eval. One shouldn't simply assume that the discomfort is "only" from scar tissue. ####

Nancy, Chief is a shepard mix (mixed with what we dont know). He is a rescue dog I got at 3 months old. He did go inside the vets office (without a muzzle) and was even good in the LITTLE room. He stool still as a statue like he was waiting for death. Of course, I was holding his head an was talking to him. He got his shots and then the vet tried to give him a doggy treat. Which he promply spit out. He ia 12 now and was the first time we got to go inside . We didnt have to stand outside like social misfits. I did notice the vet moved very slowly. He even let her listen to his heart and she said he has a heart murmer but no big problem. Then weigh in time (they have a big walk on scale) and he weighs 86 pounds. So Chief will have to learn not to expect a treat everytime I walk into the kitchen. All in all he was a good visit. I did notice they clearned all the dogs out in the waiting room and then quickly put us in a room by ourselves. It has taken 12 years but now we get to go inside.

SANDRA - Is Chief afraid of other people, or just the vet? I got Seamus from a rescue when he was 8 months old - 7 years ago! And nobody EVER sees him (except the "vet with the net"), which is a shame because he's very handsome and soooo affectionate with me. God knows what kind of trauma he endured before I took him home, but after 7 years I"ve given up hope that he will ever change. The UPS man ringing the doorbell puts him into hiding for HOURS!

Congratulations to Chief for being so brave today!

    Strategy for Friday October 19

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND…..FREE FOR ALL FRIDAY

Many of you have requested that we bring back “Free For All Friday”. That is the day that you can go over the lists from the week and catch up on calls that you may have missed. It also gives some of you the chance to give another call to someone that you feel may be close and just needs that “extra” push. Please share any information that you think might help others. Good luck and let us know how you make out!!

Remember….these calls are to gain co-sponsors and support for HR503 and S311. As difficult as it is, please concentrate on the transport of the horses to slaughter more than the conditions in Mexico. We can’t let anyone who in not well informed come to the conclusion that it would be better to have the plants in this country because of the conditions in Mexico.

Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE…..let it be heard!!
Thanks and have a great day!

but you are never far away.
i see you in a dream....

    the gospel that comes

    his great influence
    upon my life'leads me
    to understand the glory
as we honor the great john henry and vigil
as a reminder what great character and perseverance is all about=

    the intelligence
    the vibrant equine intelligence

    his grave side
filled with flowers and a mound of fresh dirt
    .
am i the only one who clutches to my chest and swing for a moment too
    long
    in a pool of tears
    then i realize..
    the words he sends me
with SUCH LOVE..as to blind in a split second

    --do everything from your heart
--make no assumptions about others or criticize their path
for this is fraught with judgement and cruelty
    --and
    that one;s actions be directed
like a sharp arrow to an impeccable array of options only
    the high road

    that i

    WILL
find a way to bring a daily closure through our loving actions
of other parts of his legacy
    ..that scream to our attention

    there is
    a reason
to be suspended and that perhaps
    john henry's timing
has a BRILLIANT SCAFFOLDING BY ITSELF

a way of preparing our way and sharing our way
that we can respect relate and understand
    the fire of grief
that they who cared and loved him
and many others who have left us through breakdowns on the track

someone;s blood poured onto many a battlefield on uor land
150 million horses gave up their lives in the civil war conflict
    alone
serving their masters..AND i havent even mentioned horse slaughter
    yet...
    ..
    oh Barbaro

    i hear you
    you.

    .shine down on us
    help us find the way
    to create what you want

to find a way ..to rise above the scarlet tide
that trickles down through the mountains we climb
    grieving cycles
that separates the window from the bride

    the fountian flows
    so clear into view
i go beyond my own decisions

you give me through john henry
    all the wonderful
    generous photographs and written
    logs
    so graciously offered to us
    to me
    who never met him
    giving me
    the chance to rise
    above
    and
note the place of eternal presence
from which to regard myself and my earth
    with poise

speckled browns and glowing green mosses
    trees
whose roots connect like holding hands underneath the peat
    leaves falling

    'only from even mindedness
can i reflect on the true nature of the world
    and my place in it
    all will be revealed ..
    in time

    john henry comes home
and i am reminded of st augustine;s song

''our whole business therefore in this life is to restore to health
    the eye of the heart
where by God may be seen/.''
    ''
    the circle is complete
    in that i suddenly
understand another piece of his sacrifice

i believe there is a great mystery in all this
    .who owned him
    who trained him
    who rode him
    who cheered for him
    who cared for him
    who nursed him
in the quiet -i will ever forget the selfless professionalism
    and excellence
    of her soul
that now continues working in nameless glory/

a lone figure waited for that van in kennett square that terrible night

a surgeon rushed to take his side
the owners held eahc ohter throgh the storm
    the trainer gasped for aur
    the jockey held his heart

    .SHE MOVED THE AIR
    AROUND HIM
SHE WATCHED THAT ALL WENT AS WELL
    AS HE DESERVED
    AND MORE

    THOSE PEOPLE
WHO GROOMED HIM AND FED HIM
    AND WASHED AND BRUSHED HIM
    THEIR FINGER PRINTS
