Barbaro Updates: 402

updates are now here.

Update 2545: Reviews of the two graded stakes on opening day at Keeneland: Country Star Shines Brightest in Alcibiades and Transduction Gold Glitters in Keeneland's Sycamore.

Update 2544: A maiden, Country Star, won the Gade 1 Alcibiades at Keeneland. The favourite, Irish Smoke, was done after a half mile.

Update 2543: I went over to Keeneland for a few races. I decided not to stay for the Stakes races, I am now watching those on TVG! My intitial impressions of Keeneland were nothing but positive. A great place to go for people and horse watching. Lots of people dressed up. It had a European feel for a race meet. It was nice to hear the "best turned out" (horse) announcement for one of the races. Something you don't see so much in the US. The crowd seemed pretty big, and certainly seemed to enjoy the racing. I met up with Jason Shandler (Bloodhorse) and his colleague Claire Novak. They will be writing about the 8th and 9th races. I also met Arthur Hancock. An enjoyable couple of hours.

Update 2542: Biancone has been suspended for one year beginning October 15. He can appeal this suspension: Trainer Biancone Suspended One Year by Kentucky Stewards.

Update 2541: Some great press (includes video) in Milwaukee: Local Animal Charity Works To Save Horses.

Update 2540: Eight sets this morning, three before dawn and the remainder shortly thereafter. You can tell the meet is opening today. There were more people out early this morning watching the workouts. Michael Matz is in town, we exchanged hellos on the horsepath. I also saw`Jeannine Edwards (with Randy Moss). We chatted away as we had our horses turned in by the gap before their training routine. I was on a two year old colt, Gerry (assistant) was on Kelly's Landing, who at 17 hands or more does not look like a sprinter! Anyway, it was great to catch up with some familiar people. All the horses I rode went nicely, but the rain did come during our last set, so I got soaked. As I was leaving plenty of cars were arriving, I am guessing for the races, it was before 11 am!

Update 2539: Keeneland's meet opens today. Here is the card. This will be my first time at the races at Keeneland which has a reputation as being one of the best, if not the best racetrack to go racing in the country.

Don't forget the media blitz.

Hiya, FsOB! Here's to a lovely opening day at Keeneland, in the heart of the Bluegrass State. Wishing all of the KY FsOB who meet at the track this weekend a wonderful outing. TGIF! May each of you have a safe weekend, mine will be longer than usual due to State offices being closed on Monday. Peace, RMH

Wow, I just read the late postings from last night. Martita, your poems never to cease to amaze me with their rich imagery. You are truly the Poet Laureate of The Barbaro Nation. "What remains ... is love".

#### To Mary S.: Please let us know this weekend how the little colt recovery proceeds.
To Kathy: May Cooper have a great weekend and may the staple removal process be smooth. ####

Good Friday morning FOBs - TGIF

Let's continue the media blitz and pray that some in the news organizations will have the courage to bring the horse slaughter story to the attention of the American people.

Prayers for all FOBs and those they love.

Good morning all....could NOT sleep last night. Things piling up. Wishing I was back on the sweet sands and the shallow incline of the warm seas of Edisto Beach, SC...It was magic.
####
Kathy (thanks so much for your affirmation!)
BTW, re Cooper; staple removal is a snap. I (cough, cough) have my own staple gun and removal thingie for those little nips that turn into holes from minor GH scuffles...and popping those staples out is so cool...it'll make that area of his bod feels better too.

THANK YOU! I am so glad you re-read. I love my KY FOBs starting with Harriette...I just get so frustrated...the poor Leetle Aide from KY got an earful yesterday. Oy. I say the same thing to the PA reps. These states: horses are the LIFEBLOOD
of these states..PA is becoming the new KY, IMHO.

Why? Why have these representatives not pledged their careers on the well-being of our wonderful TBs and all the others.

I also harangue at Clinton. She co-sponsored last year! What is she waiting for? She's supportive, blah, blah/ where is her co=sponsorship. Look at all the horse farms downstate? All the big tracks?
Belmont, Aqueduct, etc.

The Leetle Clinton Aides always ask for the name/address, etc. I tell them: thank you, please save the cost of a stamp and don't send me another generic "Hillary Clinton thanks you for your interest in (fill in the blank) postcard."

Anyhow: Shirl, I was so sad to read your post, because truth be told, I almost started the post with something like, "EXCEPTING OUR KY FOBS...."
as a disclaimer so that no one from KY would take offense. But I was too tired and mad, and just should have held my tongue as my grandmother used to say.

But anyway, thank you for the message last night.
We'll get there. And we WILL deal with our officials in the ballot boxes when they all next come up for election....

Safe rides for all who race today. All those beautiful fillies down at Belmont.....lord.

Friday: you guys: one last day of pushing to the max then we can fall down for a couple of days.
Mondays The Leetle Aides are off, so we can overload their answering machines, fax machines,
and email boxes...I want the place to be smokin' by the time they all come in for work on Tuesday.

I am asking for FOB prayers. I believe they are so powerful - and they are needed now for a little colt. He had surgery yesterday on his right front leg. He has survived the surgery, and I am asking you to lift him up with prayer, for a complete and easy recovery. Please also pray for his peace of mind, and tranquil spirit as he recovers.

Thank you.

First Anniversary Fundraiser/Raffle Sponsor List

I started a new thread today for the First Anniversary Fundraiser/Raffle Sponsor List for the Missouri accident horses. We are hoping to reach our goal of $25,000 dollars in FOB donations by the end of the fundraiser, October, 27, 2007.

There has been such good news from Longmeadow Rescue Ranch on the conditions of the horses and our Mortie has been adopted. Now there are 15 horses and one hinny left, waiting for adoption. Of the sixteen animals from the tractor-trailer accident, Mama, Willie, Freedom and Twister are permanent Barn Buddies for Longmeadow's educational programs. So that really leaves us with one dozen beauties to support until they can all find loving forever homes. They deserve love and care the rest of their lives for what they endured one year ago.

Please blue link to find out how you can help these horses and maybe win a beautiful raffle prize as well.

Good Morning Barbaro

ACN...what a beautiful night, and a beautiful day for you. Keep your sweet spirit near us and keep nudging us forward. We love you, always!

Good Morning Fans/Family of Barbaro

Last night I was thinking of songs that represent states, like Sweet Home Alabama, Rocky
Top, My Ole Kentucky Home, I lost my heart in San Francisco...etc.

Then I thought about these songs are so meaningful and represent states out of love and fun, where is the love now? Where is the compassion now, when we need our federal government so badly to help us end this nightmare.

What happen? Is greed, money, and power so great that it wipes out love, compassion, and care. That it wipes out the will of the people and we, the FOBS. I know I am rambling, but I can and will not understand our government when we are the ones who elect them, and we are the ones that pay them....

Oh well...please fax, email, call. Burn up the lines, the voices mails, the faxes. We are being heard, small steps...but we are being heard.

Remember our rescues, they need us, like we need them, our wildlife, our Fallen Angels, our family.

Have a wonderful day.

####
Alex...enjoy your day, this time of the year is beautiful in Kentucky.
Tim....thank you.
Our precious Fallen Angels, we are here, we are moving forward.

Strategy for Friday October 5

IMPORTANT NEWS!! Media Blitz began on Wednesday. We are targeting National Networks. Thanks for the great response so far!! For the Media Blitz letter and instructions go to
http://forums.prospero.com/alexbrown/messages/?msg=15267.1

The only way we will win this battle is with more awareness. We now know from our poll that we have a lot of support in the senate. This is a chance to get the rest of the undecided senators on board. There has been loads of attention lately regarding the horrendous conditions in the transport of our horses. Now that the plants have ceased operation in this county, we must grab this opportunity to push for legislation that will end the transport of horses to slaughter. Use this time wisely…..we are at a critical point and actually have a chance to make a difference!!

What we need is anti-slaughter poster or bill board in the DC area to let them know that the American people want to stop the slaughter of the horse. Maybe at a bus stop or train station.

Any ideas?

These DC people need a wakeup call.

Here's the path we need to take, IMHO. (If, god forbid, we need to start all over with the 111th Congress)

1. Heavy-duty celebrity spokesperson: attention/media drawing power
We are talking someone with the star clout of
Richard Geer, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, etc.

2. Heavy-duty equine spokesperson: ligitimacy, credibility
How about Gary Stevens? Staci Hancock, the Jacksons, obviously

3. Fundraising list
These are targets for the celebrity and equine spokespeople to partner up and hit together for the money we need to buy media space/time.
The Obvious:
animal vet product companies
animal feed companies
big tack companies?

Feel Good companies:
Nikon, Kodak, Wachovia Bank

Philanthropists:
Bill Gates, Forbes family, I'd have to research this one...but the money is out there.

PSA PRODUCTION: I've already put my dream team out there: Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy Marshall (Black Stallion and other great movies) write your own ticket. Think of great directors: Sophia Coppola!
Baz Lehrmann, Ridley Scott....
(They get their own crew together...everyone works for scale or pro-bono if possible)

Writers? How 'bout Laura Hillenbrand? Jane Smiley?
Our own Lyn Lifshin?

WHAT WE DO
We do a series of :60s and cut them to :30 TV spots.
We piggy-back print ad photography around/during commercial shoots.
Could we get Barb Livingston??

MEDIA BUYS
TV
Here's where the big money goes. 5 years ago, a :30 spot in or around a top-rated TV show like LOST, Animal Planet's top programming, Gross Anatomy, TODAY show--ran in the $30,000-$50,000 range. God knows what they are now...more research needed there.
PRINT
WSJ, NY Times, LA Times, (other major city dailies)
PEOPLE magazine, would have to research ratings on other top-read pubs...

Anyhow: those ads will cost close to $20,000 to produce digitally and insertions (at least three times) full page 4/c, and seen in full runs or in zip-code demographic insertions..OY: these can get up to around $250,000 in AARP full circulation)
(this is the right demo: Boomers with lots of disposable $$, contacts, clout)

anyhow.

You can all see how even with these bare bones ideas, lots of time, lots of good minds, lots of good will, lots of contacts and lots of money are needed to do a good PSA campaign right. Be nice if we could get media donated...research who in publishing is also big into horses...

I have a huge headache now. I used to do this stuff for pay. All this material is all pretty much online now, and I can't access it if I zip out of this site to do so, I'll lose this LONG post.

But I guess this is just to say, it is do-able...
(PS: media space reservations in major 4/c pubs
have to be made about 3 months before publication.
Newspapers: about a month ahead of print time...
TV, oddly, is more lenient..except for nutty times like election (uch) years and huge buys like the
Super Bowl (you don't want to know.)

Off to call now, my dears.

Posted by: jonnagrey at October 5, 2007 3:37 PM

PS: I forgot this one: a full page ad in the SYRACUSE newspaper costs around $8,000. Imagine what the biggies cost?

Hello fellow animal lovers. This is really easy and helps animals in
need. Please pass this information on! The Animal Rescue Site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota
of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

You can even set it to send you an automatic email alert daily so you remember to click every day.

Click to Feed the Animals - Rescue Site

Again, please tell your friends and cross post!!!

Alex,

Welcome to the races at Keeneland! Everyone gets there early to tailgate. People picnic in the parking lot. You will find all types of food from KFC to gourmet and wine. There will even be games of cornhole bags and lawn darts in the grassy areas! Some never make it into the grandstand area from their picnic. Can you imagine? LOL.

Just wait until it's time for the races. The paddock area to the rail will be packed, practically standing room only. Men will be dressed in khakis or dress slacks with dress shirts, ties and jackets. Women will be in dresses and heels. You will even see a few hats on both men and women. A day a Keeneland is not only a day for the horses, it's a day to socialize, see, and be seen!

The rain may put a small damper on the "festivities" but as the saying goes with just a bit of a change - "open the track - they will come."

Keeneland is a world in itself. Just enjoy the experience!

Crap my table did not show up.. Any how,
This is the number of horses sent to Mexico this year alone:

34,965

Compared to last year at this time:
8,716

SICKENING... gosh when will this madness end?? Calls are becoming a hassle, either they are so "blah" when you talk to them or you have to leave a voice mail.. Just feel something more needs to be done, the calling is becoming a chore anymore.. they just don't seem that interested anymore... And these people we elected?? Try talking to a Senator in person.. I have yet to get them, only their blah, irritated aides who just want to get you off the phone as quick as they can..

Anyone get anything back from the media blitz besides those canned responses?

Extra Friday 10/5 Nat’l Target List (HAHS)

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy (incl. Media Blitz) and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net
xxxxxxxxx
AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators:

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES? Here is today's (Friday 10/5) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311, ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the current/new ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter and export for slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind.

The closure of Cavel is a BIG changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-459-1887

800-614-2803

Prior HS History: All the Senators on today's list voted for the Ensign-Byrd Agriculture Appropriations Amendment in September 2005; only Senator Clinton cosponsored S 1915 last year.

Hard to watch. Tears.

Shocking Undercover Footage of U.S. Horse Export to Mexico for Slaughter Released Today!

Dear Val,
Now that all three U.S. based horse slaughter plants are closed, we have one remaining hurdle to spare American horses from foreign dinner plates -- we must stop the exportation of horses to slaughter plants in Mexico and Canada.
We just released new footage uncovering the cruelty of the Mexican horse slaughter industry and the utterly inhumane transportation methods used to ship horses to Mexican slaughterhouses.
Congress needs to act swiftly to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 311) and end the export of American horses for human consumption!
Your voice for horses is critical. Here's what you can do:

Your U.S. Representative, Albio Sires, and your two U.S. Senators, Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez, have co-sponsored a ban on horse slaughter. Please call Rep. Sires at (202) 225-7919, Sen. Lautenberg at 202-224-3224 and Sen. Menendez at 202-224-4744 to thank them for co-sponsoring H.R. 503/S. 311 and urge them to do all that they can do to pass this important legislation. Then send a follow up thank you email.
Your call today will help highlight the new and urgent need for a ban now. Will you help us build support for a second massive National Call-In Day on October 16? We need you to take part in a nationwide campaign to pass H.R. 503/S. 311 -- and it's simple. Join thousands of other concerned advocates and take part in a National Call-In Day on Tuesday, October 16. Would you please spread the word about the Call-In Day? Just take this important flier and spread it throughout your community -- leave it at coffee shops, email it to all your contacts, and distribute it wherever you can.
All of your phone calls, emails and letters have carried us this far. Keep up the pressure, and help us end the slaughter of American horses.

Sincerely,

Wayne Pacelle

########## Dear Famblee - Haven't posted much other than "strictly business" lately - consumed with our campaign. Wanted to share some of "the rest of the story." It's been great weather here in my neck of the woods - 80's during the day and 50's at night. Last night there were TWO doggies at the dogfriendly bar that's our home base place; one a black lab seeing eye dog who assists a blind musician, and the other a rottie who shadows another performer. Both such sweet girls and so friendly and well-behaved. AND my partner's daughter borrowed my Sherpa Carrier and brought a kitten along (her cat had a litter of 5, about 9 weeks ago) who was adopted on the spot by another musical couple who also have some rabbits at home. (Actually she started out with 2 leeetle B&W tuxedoes in the carrier, but when we picked up another pal for the ride in to Chicago
from Indiana, he fell in love on the spot, stopped at Walgreens for all the necessary supplies, and dropped his new kitten back at his house where his wife and 2 little sons fell in love as well.) What fun, in the midst of all the music! And tomorrow I head for the woods for perhaps our last perfect weekend of the season, for a trailride with that grand old Appie Mare, in the Prairie Restoration & Endangered Species Area in the Cook Co IL forest preserves. Life IS good - now, if only . . .ttyl -
cheers & hugs - CJ

PS - My band landed a very prestigious gig that could lead to who knows what; Lovell the astronaut (featured on The Colbert Report this week on Comedy Central) - has a son who runs a fancy-schmancy restaurant in Lake Forest IL, and guess who is booked there in November . . . Link to the restaurant, featuring astronautical memorabilia, is at our website; get there by clicking on my name below.

What about putting flyers on their cars, under the windshield wiper. Like some do at the malls. That would not cost a lot.
If they will let you in the parking lot, with all the security I think probably not.
Just thinking out loud here!
Talk to a lady today, she thought we still slaughtered horses for dog and cat food. She didn’t like talking to me. Wish I had taken a flyer with me. She looked at me like I was a crazy person, or like I was green or something. LOL Sometimes I feel crazy.
Think I will go take it out on some young aide.

Debbie,

The parking lot security will chase you if you're caught putting flyers on cars. Also, I don't know abut you but I get really annoyed when I have stuff on my windshield. Usually toss it without even looking!

The media blitz made it all the way to Grand Junction, CO. Front page article on horse slaughter. (www.gjsentinel.com)
We have both Sen. and Rep. Salazar (cousins) who have NOT supported protecting our horses from slaughter. They are listening to the local ranchers who say it will be a heavy financial burden to have to euthanize an unusable horse and the slaughter is the best method to handle the surplus horses that will overrun the countryside.
I spent 30 min with Rep Salazar's aide and we went over many points. The cruelty of transport and kill methods, the rescues out here retraining and placing horses. The better options.
She is resubmitting to him for reconsideration.
Please strike Colorado while the iron is hot. (Good luck with Sen. Wayne Allard. Trained as a veternarian, but as cold as they come).

Slaughter of American Horses in Mexico is Indefensible - Congress Must Pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act Now

Washington, DC (Oct. 3, 2007) - Now that horse slaughter has effectively ended in the United States, the pro-horse slaughter camp is claiming it was right about the need to keep slaughter an option in the US. They say that our horses are facing a far worse fate in Mexico and Canada than they were when they could be slaughtered in America. This is yet another "red-herring" argument advanced by the pro-horse slaughter side to distract humane Americans from the ultimate goal of protecting all American horses from slaughter via passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 311/HR. 503). This legislation will end the slaughter of American horses here and their export for slaughter abroad.

Because there is no legitimate defense of horse slaughter as a "necessary evil," organizations supporting the cruelty such as the American Farm Bureau, American Veterinary Medical Association and American Association of Equine Practitioners, have promoted various myths to defend the abhorrent practice. First, they told everyone that cruelty would increase without slaughter, but data from California and Illinois proved just the opposite to be true. They told everyone that horse abandonment would be epidemic if slaughter was no longer an option, yet once again the facts and historical evidence deemed this to be untrue. In fact, these two arguments, if taken to have any credibly, would imply that horse slaughter offers a financial reward to individuals who would illegally neglect or abandon their horses if the cruel option of slaughter were withdrawn.

Now these few groups and the remnants of the domestic horse slaughter industry are circulating a new myth - that they were acting on humane principals in fighting a ban on horse slaughter, arguing that it would be worse for the horses to be sent to Mexico or Canada for slaughter. Ironically, this is perhaps the single point on which both sides agree. "The fate of horses being sent to slaughter in Mexico is horrific, however, we are working to stop it while the pro- horse slaughter camp fights to perpetuate the cruelty," says Animal Welfare Institute Deputy Legislative Director, Chris Heyde.

Not only are these organizations actively lobbying Congress to block passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, which would prohibit the export of our horses to Mexico for slaughter, but the pro-horse slaughter lobby, which consists of the groups mentioned above and the owners of the Cavel, BelTex and Dallas Crown horse slaughterhouses, fails to mention that the plants (specifically BelTex and Cavel) are actively buying tens of thousands of American horses and shipping them to Mexico and Canada for slaughter. They are actively engaged in a trade which they admit leads to increased animal cruelty.

As leaders in the campaign to end horse slaughter, the Animal Welfare Institute's primary goal has always been passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. "Only with this legislation will we have the tools to stop horses from being exported to other countries for slaughter," states Heyde. "If the American Veterinary Medical Association and other contingents of the pro-horse slaughter lobby are truly concerned about the suffering of American horses at the hands of Mexican slaughterhouse workers, now is the time to join us in working to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act into law."

The Animal Welfare Institute, founded in 1951, is a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing the sum total of pain and fear inflicted on animals by humans. Our legislative division is leading the national campaign to end horse slaughter and advocating passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. ####Dana, Lakewood resident here. I feel your pain, Sister-Girlfren. I will NOT give up, nor will any of us here in the Eastern/Southern/Northern part of CO.

I am most disappointed with Senator Salazar, who has waffled back and forth since the first day I started campaigning. But that says nothing for the contempt I feel for Senator Allard, if nothing more than because he IS a veterinarian. My spousal unit and his colleagues (veterinarians all educated at CSU ) are feeling the angst of his and the CVMA and AVMA's stance on slaughter, as they do not feel "represented" by them. We won't give up, dear Dana. With all the horses in CO??? I don't THINK so!!!

Re-posting - another MUST READ from Martita (get out the Kleenex . . .)

i weep for it all.
.tears that clean and tears that shed
and tears that inform
of some great divine love.
.
for THE WHISKER FAMILY
their great leader and matriarch

IN MEMORY OF FLOWER----

the kalahari rolls ruthless;y forward
in the dust storms and in howling winds
rushing over africa
in between patches of green shrubs
and azure clear skies
until the violent rainy season
rips the red orange earth
into river s of moving mud
beside the high population of dangerous snakes
there are many
predators for little meerkats
to be concerned about on a daily basis ..minute to minute
touches of lord of the flies and the rise and fall of the roman empire
all the traits of rotting character or an imbalanced
aggressive strand
in their civilization
tearing at and
embedded in their story for survival
we sure can recognize
our failures and our selves
in their daily struggles and victories
she was the leader
the matriarch and
she ruled her roost wiht an iron will .
.clear boundaries and daily consistent rituals

during this year of Barbaro;s life in my life

the meerkat manor provided me with perspective
and a way to see how my society behaves.
.giving me tools
to cope with the stress of my high voltage city
and the life i have chosen

i am deeply proud and grateful for
these little vignettes which inform my life today ,too

and to the dear fan of barbaro
who posted a thread on her passing yesterday

flower died defending her new born cubs
-- of a snake bite
a snake ready to eat her young
the sting was lethal ..you culd see it in mozart several months ago..
delivered to her taught little frame
on january 27th and she died the same day Barbaro left
us here on earth the 29th

we who are devoted to the family antics
of three major family meerkat units
found out september 28th
but i found out last night
i cut out --yesterday eve
the photo of her darling little snout
and that tracking collar
she ignored the consequences if
it meant a save..
as she proceeded with her daily life
filled with action
to defend and feed her family-
talk
about integrity courage and loyalty

i A;LSO
recall a fan of barbaro
months ago writing

''i think the meerkat manor is depressing and i hate the series''

i actually laughed non stop..
because she was right .
.
it is very tough life being a meerkat in the kalahari
one of the earth's most unfriendly unforgiving
environments.
.a brutal
taxing existence
in which the meerkats
despite what ever trauma had been visited
they would
every morning
set about cleaning their doorways
start fresh
and then proceed to hunt for breakfast

at night
they would gather at the burrow doorway
to watch the sun set
gazing with great intensity UPWARDS

..it was spellbinding

i dont know about you
but i have friends who i love
who have not looked up into the sky or counted stars
held hands or snuggled under a quilt ..
for a long time-
-some even think that is progress

i also have friends who are as romantic as i am
and have the fatal flaw of loving every creature in need
and every creature in joy

the state of awe
that flower
inspired and brought to me ..
her strength was something to behold

i have wept and found quiet ways
today to honor her
and perhaps my dancing
was a bit more skittish them normal
as if to reflect her bounce and how she flew
over the rough terrain looking for food and charing the invading
enemies

there is nothing romantic about nature
really--talk abut the great terminator..
mother earth has her ruthless
determined patterns
to fulfill her mysterious form of justice and balance

tonight
i honor all those researchers who must have held their hearts
wanting to save flower
as she died an agonizing and excruciating death
from the snake poison
how interesting a metaphor
something so lovely
to die for such a noble virtue as loyalty
an instinct for sure
alive and well

a lot of gumption for me to admire

so what remains
i whisper

LOVE

to her
to Barbaro
for opening my heart that feels like the great amazon river
huge endless space
and under duress wants to crumple up and hide.
.
i smelt and tasted and observed
the great flowing tributaries fo the amazon
for the first ten years of my live

what remains--
in visible and invisible matter
molecules pristine and molten
compressed fiber and glowing strands

is

love

AMVA on consequences of horse slaughter ban
Friday, October 5, 2007, 1:30 PM
by Julie Harker

The American Veterinary Medical Association says the ramifications of the shutdown of legal horse slaughter in the US are already being seen.
Because of state and court action, the 3 remaining horse slaughter plants in the US have been closed. Dr. Mark Lutschaunig, the
veterinarian who directs AVMA’s governmental relations, says unwanted horses in the US are already being shipped to Canada and Mexico, where
they’re worked, then taken to horse slaughter plants in those countries, under less than optimal conditions, especially in Mexico. He says the other consequence is more horses being abandoned and neglected.

"(At) farms, you know, that have 50 to 100 horses that aren't being cared for properly. And again, that's something that when we stated opposition to the (federal) bill, we said we are very concerned that this would happen if we take away this option for slaughter of horses."

He says the AMVA does NOT support the position of the Human Society of the US which is pushing for a federal ban on horse slaughter in this country.

"Our profession absolutely loves horses, as we love all animals. And, we're not pro-slaughter. What we are is pro-animal welfare and pro-horse
welfare."

With more than 100-thousand horses unwanted in the US each year, Lutschaunig is urging citizens to contact their Congressmen and women to
oppose federal legislation to ban legal horse slaughter in America. The unintended consequences, he says, will be far worse.

One of the Chiefs Of Staff of a senator I work with called and asked my opinion. First, this shows the pro-slaughter folk are hard at work in the distribution of this. My response:

"There is no correlation between neglect/abuse and a ban on horse slaughter. Two cases in point: In the mid-1990s, 300,000 horses per year were being slaughtered. In 2003, 43,000 horses were slaughtered. Yet, with the dramatic decrease in numbers, there was no increase in reports of neglect or abuse. In 1998, California passed their anti-horse slaughter bill. In the ensuing nine years, no increase in reports of neglect or abuse."
"The expose' by the Texas newspapers have brought light to an unknowing public. However, anti-slaughter people have known for years of this insidious practice. Finally, someone provided a high profile vehicle that will fall upon anyone's eyes."
"The people who want to keep the slaughter of horses as an alternative to make a quick buck on them are not the same people as those who have these animals and do not feed or care for them."
"Finally, the key here is we are still in a "Proposed Ban" mode. Horses that are being slaughtered today are being slaughtered because we do not have a ban on horse slaughter.
The "Proposed Ban," once enacted, will stop the transport of our horses into Mexico (and Canada)."
"Again, the information that has come forth as the result of the expose' by the Texas newspapers is not new. The Mexican slaughter houses and the "technique" they use to end our horses lives are being used as leverage by the pro-slaughter side while in fact we, the anti-slaughter proponents, have known all along that what you see in Mexico is merely an uncovering of the remnants of the horse slaughter industry: greed, evil and profiteering. In closing, you have agreed with me that horse slaughter is not a population control method. For this reason alone, I urge you to impress upon your senator the time-sensitive issue we face..........our horses face!"

These arguments cannot be refuted......they are solid based on history!

I wanted to let all of you know that something has literally fallen into my lap. There have been some developments at the ranch - one is not so good. The matriarch is currently in the hospital with many things affecting her - congestive heart failure, fluid in her lungs, bleeding in the stomach, abdominal aneurysm. Her heart issues have been stabilized and she is doing better, but there is the risk of a stroke. This woman is like a mother to me and all this just tells me that it is only a matter of time before she chooses to leave.

###
I will also be opening a healing center at the ranch - opening date is November 5th. I will be there 3 days during the week so I can continue to visit Fair Hill. There is a half-trailer there that already has a table and office area. Willow and I will be cleaning it out next week and then the decorating starts. I plan to do Reiki sessions there and I will use the horses to help. I will also be conducting Vision/Energy walks in the woods two weekends/month for groups of people. Will also be training people in energy healing. Will be selling books, CD's, teas, orchid/flower essences and (hopefully) jewelry and will have a lending library.I will be (in the future) having Restorative Yoga and Yin Yoga classes (nothing pretzely). It will be called SunRise Spirit Healing. I invite any FOB's to come visit the ranch. There will be a trailer there for overnight visitors as Willow and I may be conducting retreats there, but right now, other things are taking precedence.I will also be helping to raise awareness of equine welfare issues - especially the anti-slaughter legislation and rescue facilities. If anybody wants more information, please e-mail me at:
healinglovepeaceons@yahoo.com. I'll be working on the flyer over the weekend so its ready for next week's workshop at the ranch.

And this is rent free. This is being given to me - and that blows my mind.

Saw a GORGEOUS bay youngster today in Race 1 at Keeneland, the winner of that race, in fact, named Route. Looked him up and realized why he was such a handsome fellow--his sire is Dynaformer.

I think I have another new favorite to follow.

He had enough energy to jump the line before the finish. Jumped like a champ, too.

###
I saw the spill at Keeneland. Ack. F. Geroux has, at first news, a broken wrist, per Jill at TVG. Gary Stevens said the news might be amended to include collarbone injury or soemthing else, but that the synthetic surfaces will be as kind to the jockeys who fall as they are to the horses (the babies!) that run on them.

###
COLD here in the Mojave--low clouds and rain here and there (I get the full meaning of "weather cells" by watching the Victor Valley). I'm wearing everything I own and gave my OTTB a warm bran mash after our very brisk ride this morning. I had a nice cup of tomato soup once horse chores were done. It's that kind of day outside.

###
Thanks Alex for all you do, and enjoy yourself at Keeneland. It looks fantastic, and I'm sure you'll have a good time. I enjoy reading your updates and reports.

Posted by: KAY at October 5, 2007 9:30 PM

the 6th race was not a breakdown. one horse went down after clipping heals, another fell over the top of the first horse. both horses were fine. one jockey was down for a while, not sure how he is.

I have been very afraid all along that the newspaper article in the Texas papers could be a ploy by pro slaughter???? It gives them some leverage to get unfounded sympathy with the american public...they are doing exactly as I feared!!! Twisting the truth!!!!!

DEFEAT IS NOT AN OPTION!!!!!!

Hay, FOB's!

You are all the greatest...thank you for your support. It is my dearest wish to give back as much as I can.

###
SherryVW, check your e-mail. Daryl, it is soooo good to see you posting...have missed you.

And speaking of missing someone, Alex, I know you are doing what you want to do, but it STILL is so strange to not see you at Tim's barn. I find myself looking for you in the Brett Favre jersey...

Will be at Fair Hill on Sunday morning. I'm going to structure my time to be able to continue going to Fair Hill at least a couple of times/month and see where Lynne Brown and I can take the Fans of Too Cute Luke.

Take care, everybody!

Am glad that Primetime Lassie and Misty Ocean are okay. I will be watching the races tomorrow on ESPN wishing everyone a safe day. I usedd to work with a woman who was always talking about the Indy 500 car racing. Every year we had to hear every detail. I told her once I didnt like car racing as much as horseracing and she wanted to know why. I told her the cars do not have hearts. These dear horses that are being slaughtered have feelings and know pain, fright, and hungar and thrist are so heartbreaking. Sometimes we get tired but then we remember little Willie and all the others so we wont give up. Not ever. I really believe we were called together for a purpose. ### I keep trying to think of prominent people to help us. Maybe Doris Day . I know she does ddogs but is for the welfare of all animals. I know she has a office in Washington. (doggs?) -cant type when I get upset. Besides Chief wants me to open the door so he can go through the doggy door to the backyard. So his 80 pound body is on my body looking into my eyes and drolling. Gad. Here comes the lethal paws.

****Did anyone get a mailer from the Doris Day league, with reference to Ferdinand on the front envelope? I got it in the mail the other day, and cannot find it anywhere. I did not get a chance to open it so I don't know what is was about. Is it possible that the Doris Day league is sending anti-horse slaughter mailers out?

Cooper update. Well frens, put away those lamp shades. You can't wear them to my house just yet. Cooper got the staples out, pretty non eventful. His legs are still wrapped, although to a lesser degree, to protect a couple sores. One is kinda significant, the others are okay. He just about ran around the yard when we came home. He had a happy look on his face. So, we are lampshading for probably 2 more weeks. More time to plan the party.

Alex...thank you for your updates. It sounds really nice there.

Best wishes to all the FOBs...have a great weekend.....Kathy

CHERYL G - happy birthday, dear friend! I hope you are going to "party hearty!"

(((((COOPER))))) I'm thrilled to hear you've adjusted so well to life as a tripod...but those darned lampshades - don't know how any animal tolerates those things!

Update on injured jockey (may not be too up to date because my son called from MA and we watched some of the Yankee game "together"...) F. Geroux, according to the announcers, has a broken wrist "at the least" - but it was interesting to hear them say that, were it not for the artificial track, his injuries would have been much more serious. Some speculation about his collarbone, but I've haven't heard anything more yet.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MICHAEL MATZ AND BEE CHARMER for an impressive Place in the Sycamore...I thought for a minute there he was going to take it all!

And I am so hopeful that everything is ok with the gorgeous Irish Smoke - I didn't see the race but was amazed to see that the favorite finished last...and I admit to being a fool for those greys! From Alex's comment, it sounds like she just ran out of gas...

Hi Everyone....

This is being written/posted here for our Fren, Jonna....her computer took a fatal turn right after the "Media" post she left today, TS/3:37p...she tried and tried to 're-boot' her computer...had many rants/fitzzzzzz...all to no avail!

Her computer is on it's way to MO, to her fren there, where a new hard drive will be installed and all her information will be re-booted...however, that will take about TWO WEEKS...she asked me to please leave this post on her behalf.

Jonna will be traveling each and every morning to her neighbor's home to print out her MARCHING ORDERS...so she may carry the RED/WHITE/BARBARO and make her callllllllllssss to the powers that be...so she can still be Barbaro's Voice:)

Please keep her in your hearts and minds, she WILL return as soon as she possibly can:)

Needless to say, Famblee, Jonna is BESIDE herself not being able to post here or receive e-mail or...or...or!!! :/

Hi Maribel:
That's the only weapon pro-slaughter people have: twisting the truth! This expose' is one more tool in our shed.........it has given us the opportunity to refute one more lie because they have nothing to back up their hollow cries......we have facts and history on our side.....and I'll embrace them as allies anytime.
As for the Chief Of Staff I sent the response to: he called back, said have a nice weekend and keep sending information on alternatives to slaughter. All was okay in his camp, damage control complete.
Maribel, have a nice weekend.

And Lyn, great weekend to you also......and miss you as well!

#### To Lyn G.: Sorry to read that your friend is facing significant health challenges.
To Kathy: Hoorah for Cooper, staple-free at last!
To Donna in NY and Sandra: I didn't get anything in the mail re. Doris Day's shelter for dogs. But I agree that she is still quite beloved and widely respected. It would be so awesome if she could help channel the media in a positive manner! ####

This update from last year, I still miss him so! What it?

Barbaro Update: 94
Posted October 5, 2006
updates are now here.

Update 776: Just spoke to Peter Brette (6:30 pm), who had heard from Michael, who visited Barbaro later today. Barbaro remains well. Another comfortable day.

Update 775: The following is a brief phone interview I have just completed with Mrs. Jackson. She was very gracious to agree to the interview, and very apologetic when she was not available when I initially called this afternoon. She called me back shortly thereafter. I have enjoyed all the interviews I have conducted so far, but I have to admit, this was the first one in which I was nervous! That being said, Mrs. Jackson gave me no reason to be nervous. Anyway, I am rambling, here it is!

Me: Yesterday was the anniversary of Barbaro's first win, what were your impressions?
Mrs. Jackson: We sure did not think much beyond the moment. It was a nice exciting win, but who knows? We were celebrating after the win, but it was for that nice win. We got a little more excited when Michael (Matz) brought up the Laurel Futurity (for his next race). We take each race at a time, first it was his maiden, then a listed stake, and another stake, and each is a step up, and you get more excited with each step. We were amazed when Michael thought about the Kentucky Derby, which was mentioned maybe before the Holy Bull Stakes. We really needed to switch to dirt to see what we had.

Me: What was the emotional experience like, to win the Kentucky Derby?
Mrs. Jackson: It was unbelievable, and it is hard to explain. It is every bit as exciting as you can imagine it is going to be. We are so lucky, thanks to Barbaro.

Me: Are you surprised at Barbaro's continued following?
After his surgery, at New Bolton, when things started arriving, from all parts of the US and around the world, we realized he had touched a lot of peoples' hearts. People were standing on the overpasses of I 95 when he was in transit from Pimlico, and then they followed up with notes and gifts at New Bolton. It was amazing. The unidentified donor who began the Barbaro Fund in Barbaro's honor started a momentum all of its own. The momentum has continued, it is just amazing how wide reaching it has become. We are honored.

Me: And visiting Barbaro?
Mrs. Jackson: Today (9 am) We had a great visit, he was nickering for his grass, which I pick from our farm. I will be returning again this evening. It is no big deal for me to visit, I live so close and usually visit twice a day. Bringing the grass gives Barbaro something to do while I visit, and of course he likes it a lot. I like to visit, he has done so much for us, it is the least I can do.

\This is one year ago today, and I still miss this horse I had never seen, but on TV. He was our horse, and I still miss him. Oh the hopes I had for him. Gee what if!

On the internet contact Doris Day Animal League. She has quite a but (with pictures) on the horses going to Mexico and Canada. She does have an office in Washington. (thats bit not but). Anyway she might be a good contact for us. Lets write her and see what she is doing, etc. Someone write that is a better typist than me. ha.

MARIBEL - I was talking to my son in MA when I read your post about the caramel machiato and started chuckling because my son also loves them. When I told him why I was laughing, he said, "...obviously a woman with exquisite taste!" (no pun intended...)

Best to you and Hans - I hope you are getting some rest...just a little. Take care of yourself!

Great news about Biancone. I'm not usually happy about anyone losing a job and financial security--but my understanding is--this isn't the first time with Biancone. So he knows the consequences of his behavior.

Biancone was running a horse at Saratoga back that first weekend in Aug. I remember telling this guy not to bet on the horse because of Biancone's history of doping. The guy just looked at me like he couldn't have cared of less. I was sorry to see that attitude.

Martita,
I said I would never watch Meerkat Manor after Shakespeare, I said never after Blossum, after Lenny & Squiggy and so many other sad horrific deaths. I sadly saw Flower and her demise last week and am heartbroken as never before. You put into words the feelings of everything on the desert, the harshness, the beauty, the bravery as well as the death cry. I for one, think that without Flower, the Whiskers would never have been 40 strong or as good a mob as they are. Pitiful and harsh as it may be, it is life on the Kalahari.

Godpseed, Flower, Godspeed, tiny creature with a heart as big as Africa.

Prayers for all creatures great and small

Kathy,

Bud and I are very happy for Copper. No staples is a wonderful thing, but does he have that lamp shade off yet? I can still see Bud, on his back doing his stealth dog thing to scratch his back! Bud just had a severe ear problem.

I was so happy for Bud. Just doing his dog thing!
It was so cool!

Safe rides to all horses and riders this week-end.
