Barbaro Updates: 401

updates are now here.

Update 2538: An interesting article exploring why our horses run less often than they used to run: Commentary: Culture Change. My personal observation is we need to get off the hard dirt tracks and then we can look at the liberal drug policies that are prevelant in this country.

Update 2537: Another great morning to be at Keeneland. It was a warm morning for sure. Our fourth set, which was about 7:25 am, the sun began to rise. I took a couple to the gate this morning to stand. Both stood very quietly. I got to gallop the one I loved yesterday, again today. He is just a very cool dude with a nice long raking stride to him. A few more people were milling around by the gap (just past the wire) and in the grandstand area. It seems at its busiest about 8 am, but if I was coming to visit I would be there before 7. Its just so peaceful watching the horses gallop by. You can here them breath, you cannot hear them hit the ground.

Don't forget, its media blitz, all week!

Update 2536: Timonium's three day sale is now over, and the sale was solid: Average Up, RNA Down as Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Ends, excerpt:

"Any time you are in the neighborhood of 25% (RNA rate), you are doing great," said Walt Robertson, Fasig-Tipton president. "This is just such a good, solid, honest market. For the horse-for-horse comparison, I see it being just exactly where it was last year. I am thankful that we did get more horses sold percentage-wise than we did a year ago."

One cool thing about working at Keeneland is knowing the place is loaded with some of the best horses in North America: Stars come out at Keeneland.

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, I wish you a safe and beautiful early morning at Keeneland. Your descriptions of the atmosphere there are enchanting and bring back great memories for me. Wishing all FsOB a productive Thursday! Peace, RMH

#### To Mike C.: I think it may be safer to try to hand John Henry a doughnut rather than give him a kiss. Ha! Ha! I can't wait to read how you think he looks and acts when you see him this weekend. ####

Good Thursday morning FOBs

Let's hope our media blitz yesterday will light some fires under the news people to provide more coverage to the horse slaughter issue. I hope we do it more often.

Mike C. - Enjoy your visit with the GREAT John Henry. Wish I could tag along.

My prayers for those in need. I know yesterday was a discouraging day for many FOBs, myself included. Anytime we read about a horse so mistreated, that we tried to help save and learn that it wasn't possible (Buddy)we all feel like crawling in a hole. Yes, we lose faith in the decency of mankind. I believe (because of this site) we hear more horror stories than most people do. We all need to remember the good, kind hearts of the FOBs and the rescue organizations and humane societies who are in the trenches fighting the battle against animal cruelty every single day. We can't give up and turn our backs on these situations - if we do, what will happen to the animals? This is and probably will be an uphill battle. So take heart FOBs - you are the most wonderful people in the world and I admire each and every one of you.

Have a wonderful day!!

Janice
A forever FOB

You should be aware of this: Story in today's Dallas Morning News:
STATE HELPS SEND HORSES TO SLAUGHTER
More of them kept in border pens before heading to Mexico
Washington -- Horses are filling some state-owned livestock pens along the Texas-Mexico border before they head to slaughter for their meat in Mexico.
With the three U.S. horse slaughter plants closed, the industry has turned to Mexico and Canada to kill horses for their meat, largely for export for diners abroad.
As of this week, the U.S. exported 20,196 horses from Texas for slaughter in Mexico. That's up from 1,109 over the same period last year, U.S. Agriculture Department statistics show.
The Humane Society of the U.S. criticized the Texas Department of Agriculture for allowing companies to use taxpayer-funded pens to help get the horses to slaughter.
The group planned to hold a news conference today to show video from the pens and a Mexican slaughter plant. It is pushing for a national ban on the shopment or export of horses for slaughter.
A 1949 Texas law bans the sale or possession of horse meat for human consumption or transferring horse meat so it can be sold for human consumption. THE LAW DOESN'T ADDRESS LIVE ANIMALS.
Beverly Boyd, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Agriculture, said the agency is required by law to accept all animals in the pens -- for rest, meals and checks by Mexican veterinarians.
"A lot of these animals ... have traveled a long distance," Ms. Boyd said. "You don't want them on the trucks all the time."

Isn't that swell...they get to have the meal of the condemned and a little nap before they go through slaughter in Mexico. Good old machismo Mexico.

Good God. Be with our horses...

Get calling, blitz and push, push, push. It's all we can do. We have to keep our heads above water.
I truly feel there is a ground swell beginning. There has been more press in the western states in the last three days than in years--it seems. Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

Editorial from the San Antonio Exress New yesterday.
The best commentary on the horrendous practice of slaughtering horses for food may have come from a three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
The panel was considering a petition to overturn a 1949 Texas law that banned the sale, possession or transport of horse meat for human consumption.
In upholding the Texas law last year, the panel wrote, "The lone cowboy riding his horse on a Texas trail is a cinematic icon. Not once in memory did the cowboy eat his horse."
Such rulings were part of a long legal battle to shutter the nation's three remaining horse processing plants: two in Texas and one in Illinois. Animal rights advocates also waged a legislative fight in Congress to pass the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, which seeks to prevent the export of American horses for slaughter in other countries.
In the legal arena, horse slaughter opponents prevailed. No more horses are being processed for human consumption in the United States.
On Capitol Hill, they have thus far been unsuccessful. The Horse Slaughter Prevention Act failed to pass the Senate last year. This year, it sits far back on the legislative agenda.
As Express-News reporter Lisa Sandberg shockingly documented, this has created a situation where Texas horses are being sold and slaughtered under utterly inhumane conditions in Mexican processing plants.
The boom in cross-border horse shipments seems to confirm that horse slaughter proponents have always put profits ahead of their professed concern for the welfare of their cherished animals.
Horses, like dogs, are more than just beasts in American culture. They are sentient creatures that serve as companions and helpers. And they deserve better than to be hacked to death in killing boxes to please the palates of epicureans in Europe and Asia.
Congress should act quickly to close the export loophole and prevent horses from the United States from meeting a gruesome end in foreign slaughterhouses.

Did everyone get this letter from Newsweek.
This is just a small part of it.
And I will Blitz them again, for I did not give my address nor phone yesterday. The city I did.

HOW DO I GET A LETTER PUBLISHED IN NEWSWEEK?

We receive over 1,000 faxes, e-mail messages and pieces of mail every week, most of it from readers responding to one of our stories. Because there is a premium on space in the Letters column, we can only publish a small number of these letters. Many good letters cannot be used simply because of the limited space available. In order to expedite the selection process, please include the DATE and TITLE of the article to which your letter refers in the subject-heading of your message. Please refrain from sending multiple copies of the same message. E-mail messages that do not address material printed in a recent issue of Newsweek are rarely considered for publication, nor are letters that are more than a paragraph or two. We cannot open e-mail attachments of any kind, and will not consider mass e-mails or letters sent to multiple addresses.

If your letter is considered for the Letters column and there are editing questions, we will contact you by phone. For this reason, it is important that you include a daytime phone number. It is also important that you include your city and state (or province and country), since we print that information under each letter writer’s name. We do not print e-mail addresses in our column. Newsweek reserves the right to edit all letters for space and clarity, and letters may appear in electronic versions of Newsweek.

Glad Texas is getting the horse slaughter in the Newspapers. More people read the more to help!
Good are bad, most are like us. Have NO clue about the horses being slaughtered.

Robynn-I moved to Louisville in 1980 and I remember the Octoberfest in Butchertown. That no longer happens. But, the St. James is still going strong. In fact, it starts tomorrow.

Alex-you will have to try to do the "Saturday daily double" at Keeneland. That is...on a UK football weekend you go to Keeneland during the day and to the football game at night. UK has always scheduled their October home football games at night so that people could attend Keeneland during the day. Of course, the TV Sports networks can mess that up by deciding to broadcast a UK game during the day. For example, CBS has decided to pick up the UK vs. LSU game for next weekend. It is a 3:30 p.m. start time. That messes up the "Saturday Daily Double".

Happy Anniversary of Barbaro's first Race!

WASHINGTON: Horses are filling some state-owned livestock pens along the Texas-Mexico border before they head to a grisly slaughter for their meat in Mexico.

With the only three horse slaughter plants in the U.S. closed, the industry has turned to Mexico and Canada to kill horses for their meat largely for export abroad for diners.

As of this week, the U.S. exported 20,196 horses from Texas for slaughter in Mexico. That's up from 1,109 over the same period last year, U.S. Agriculture Department statistics show.

Through the week of Sept. 22, the latest date for which statistics were available, 29,741 horses had been exported to Mexico for slaughter from Texas and New Mexico, compared to 6,331 for the same period last year. Arizona and California showed no exports of horses for slaughter.

The Humane Society of the United States criticized the Texas Department of Agriculture for allowing companies to use taxpayer-funded pens to help get the horses to slaughter.

The group planned to hold a news conference Thursday to show video collected at the pens and a Ciudad Juarez slaughter plant. It is pushing for a national ban on the shipment or export of horses for slaughter.

The House in August passed a $91 billion (€64.11 billion) farm and nutrition spending bill that would make it illegal to transport or export horses for slaughter so their meat can be eaten by people. The Senate has not voted on its version of the bill. Another Senate bill protecting horses from slaughter was approved in committee and a House version is pending in committee.

"The state should have absolutely no role in facilitating slaughter given the existence of a statute that forbids the practice," said Wayne Pacelle, president of The Humane Society of the United States.

A 1949 Texas law bans the sale or possession of horse meat for human consumption or transferring horse meat so it can be sold for human consumption. The law does not address live animals.

The Humane Society used that state law to successfully sue for the shutdown of a Beltex Corp.-owned horse slaughter plant near Fort Worth and a Dallas Crown plant in Kaufman.

An Illinois law, upheld by a federal appeals court, bans horse slaughter for human consumption and the import, export or possession of horse meat designated for human consumption.

Beverly Boyd, spokeswoman for the agriculture department, said the agency's pens are a rest stop for animals headed to Mexico and South America.

She said the agency is required by law to accept all animals as long as state and federal laws and the department's pen policies are being followed.

Animals eat, drink and rest at the pens after traveling hundreds of miles (kilometers). They also are checked by Mexican veterinarians before being shipped south. The agency has several pens along the border for exporting livestock to Mexico.

"A lot of these animals going into Mexico or Canada have traveled a long distance. You don't want them on the trucks all the time," Boyd said.

About four to six trucks carrying approximately 30 horses each were arriving at the state pens at the time, said Kathy Milani, The Humane Society of the United States' vice president for investigations and video.

The loads were being delivered by Beltex Corp. Beltex also runs a Panhandle feedlot in Morton, Texas, about 300 miles (483 kilometers) northeast of Socorro. Truck drivers also told the animal protection group's employees they had driven from Morton.

Beltex did not respond to phone messages requesting comment.

The horses arrive at around daybreak, some with injuries. In early afternoon, Mexican trucks arrive at the pens to load the horses and take them to Mexico, she said.

Some horses are walked across the border at nearby Santa Teresa, New Mexico to San Geronimo, Mexico. They are loaded into double-decker cattle trailers that the U.S. has outlawed and driven further into Mexico, Milani said.

Opponents of efforts to ban horse slaughter had warned during previous congressional debates that closing the plants in the U.S. would lead to the export of horses into Mexico and Canada.

"The U.S. plants had, certifiably so, the most humane way to end the life of unwanted horses available to those horse owners who did not object to horse slaughter and we turned our back on it," said Charlie Stenholm, a former Texas congressman who now lobbies for the horse slaughter industry.

"Now we are transporting horses hundreds of miles and it's all because some people object to horse slaughter," he said.

http://forums.prospero.com/alexbrown/messages/?msg=15267.1

The only way we will win this battle is with more awareness. We now know from our poll that we have a lot of support in the senate. This is a chance to get the rest of the undecided senators on board. There has been loads of attention lately regarding the horrendous conditions in the transport of our horses. Now that the plants have ceased operation in this county, we must grab this opportunity to push for legislation that will end the transport of horses to slaughter. Use this time wisely…..we are at a critical point and actually have a chance to make a difference!!

Love, Light and Protection for All of The Horses

Sure am tired of media bias. It's everywhere. The nice life condemned horses have before their trip across the border, my eye.

I didn't realize writers for newspapers and news magazines were into fiction.

###
Alex, thank you for all you do AND for reporting about your fantastic job! I'm enjoying that so much, as are we all--almost as much as you are enjoying it, I'm sure.

Onward, all.

Posted by: KAY at October 4, 2007 2:42 PM

The law does not address live animals.
The USDA has a law for transporting live horses, it reads no cripple, no blind or mares in foal.
Why don't they read the law, walking the horses over the borders to the double dicker trucks?
Those poor horses, this makes me so sick. Congress sits there! Like always, doing nothing.

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at October 4, 2007 2:44 PM

Even though my hands were shaking through all the calls: (I am so verklempt, CJ!)I called 'em all and I blitzed twice...

One interesting thing. These kids are getting overwhelmed today...two TWO of them actually cut me off, with apologies that they had tons of OTHER calls coming in. I couldn't get through to 5 and had to leave VM--which we usually do afterhours..

So, GOD WILLING AND MAN NOT DISALLOWING AND THE CREEK DON'T RISE...all those other calls were from other horse maniacs...pushing for 16 more co-sponsors. TIMING IS SO IMPORTANT HERE--the end of the congressional year is in sight, and we have this LEETLE window through which we all have to chuck our wishes for these magnificent animals. We already have press going in the WEST, and again, GOD WILLING, we will soon have more press, and we will shove this 10-inch flow through the proverbial 2-inch pipe and triumph.

Voters are getting sick of elected officials...who seem to serve only themselves...God, even one of my guys--Jim Walsh (R-NY) is speaking out against Bush decisions--like this veto on the S-Chip--let me tell you, this is AMAZING. Walsh has been a Bush man all along...until just recently.

And--one more thing, as long as I am on a rant here--the entire state of Kentucky ought to be pounding on their official's doors. I would hang my head in disgrace if I was from KY and saw that these dolts are not 100% behind the horse protection movement. This is the freaking lifeblood of KY... what is wrong with these people...(the "elected" officials.... not our Harriett and all the other FoBs)

AND one more thing: without ALEX and the rest of the Barbaro connections....none of this would be happening. It all began with the big bay colt and the devoted, brave, crazy, loving, hopeful and proud people around B.

...and now I'm going to have a leetle cry about him. I haven't done this in a long time. I have this image of him, so game, trying so hard, walking along beside Dr. Richardson in several commercials for the Barbaro Fund...dappled with sun, thinner, gait all cattywhompus, but BARBARO. Still so proud, still so beautiful. Still ours....

If only. Damn.

Good Morning FsOB around the World,

I've been catching up with posts from yesterday and today, and there is a lot of tears being shed and hearts broken. From Buddy in Oregon to Plum Tricky at Horse Feathers to tumors leading to a senseless death. We are tired, we are spent; we are sick and tired of neglect, we are sick and tired of politicians with their hands in the money jar and not representing their employers - US, the citizens and taxpayers. Some of us feel defeated too.

We are NOT defeated! We will NEVER be defeated! But what do we do? We keep fighting our battles; our United Causes are the fight of a lifetime...a Horses lifetime.

Think of this as a war. In war, some battles are won and some are lost. Skirmishes happen all the time, usually, a skirmish is used to wear down the enemy, their strength and will to keep fighting. We have enemies skirmishing with us every day, but we must keep going. We have won every major battle we've fought thus far, and we ARE winning the biggest battle, the one in Congress!

When the fight gets overwhelming, retreat a little and regroup. Rest, refit and come back to the fight stronger and smarter.

So many of us are leading the charges. We fight laminitis, we fight slaughter, we fight to save Horse after Horse and we fight to care for every Horse. We are the strongest Army in the world! We Will prevail!

I am very proud of each and every FOB. Take care of yourselves, you are the foot soldiers that close and meet the enemy every day. We must be in top form, so rest and relax when you need to.

As Rosemarie says: Failure is NOT an option!

No Horse left behind.

Some things that will make THE LEETLE AIDES laugh:
1. They have all been eating lunch at their desks.
2. They have a three-day weekend coming up
3. This means no telephone and three days of no take out.

These kids are punchy...and it's amazing what will push their funny buttons. Either they're punchy or not many callers take the time to joke with them...

I WILL DO ANYTHING TO GET THEIR ATTENTION.

Sadly, we've realized we must close down the adoption program. No one is adopting the dogs or the horses and we can't afford to keep them. I'm due another feed delivery tomorrow that costs $1680. for each delivery and only lasts one month.

This does not release any adopters from their adoption contracts and we will continue to help adopters place their horses from their homes, when they can no longer keep them. I will continue to do this forever and will be around to enforce and support the existing contracts with adopters, but we are no longer taking horses and dogs here and we must place all that we have immediately, as we just do not have the funds to take care. This is an urgent request that should be cross posted. We need homes for all these horses and dogs.

Maybe eventually we can get on our feet and start over but I suspect it may take years to repair this damage that has taken place from this upheaval and the months we spent preparing for the move, the move itself and the months that its taken us to get settled in and be functional. Anyone who has the heart to help - it would be much appreciated. It cost us at least 12.5k to move and sadly we are nowhere we should be to be ready for winter, so we may even lose our old farm.

Thank you all for your continued friendship, inspiration and support,

Our family visited Celeita's farm, early this summer. The work that had been done was mind boggling and the care the horses were getting was magnificent. The pity is, the horses are not being adopted and feed bills are tremendous. With forty plus horses in residence, help is mandatory. This adds to the costs. Please cross post for homes for horses and dogs. Thank you.

I know there has been sad news over the last couple of days but it is important to remember the success stories also.

What's Your Wish, was a stakes winner of over $245,000 in his career and was rescued from the killer buyers. Mr. Merenda is a horse that was no longer productive and was able to be saved right off the track saving him from the ordeal of even having to go to auction.

Wish and Mr. Merenda were vanned together to wonderful place where they will be safe and loved.
Hopefully, they will be retrained and adopted out to forever homes.

When you get disheartened, remember these two guys and smile. It will help you continue to do the wonderful work you all do. Until they are ALL save, we must have something to hang on to.

Glad to see so many blitzing the media yesterday,
that is what we need to put pressure on the do-nothing reps and senators. The descriptions of the horses in Texas and Mexico is sickening and heartbreaking. And the USDA is a travesty. We have to keep fighting and fight harder for our horses. Barbaro is our inspiration and he is with us every step of the way.

Kathy in SC - glad Cooper is home and recovering. I remember being amazed at Nala when she came home, how great she could get around.

The 3 dogs a few of us rescued from the Georgia gas chamber, arrived on Sunday night. All 3 are being boarded at my vet until we find fosters or homes. Abel, an amazing teddy bear rottie/lab mix, who gives you his paw as you walk up to him, is very sick with heartworm. My vet is doing the treatment at a huge discount and I have already secured some donations for his treatment, we are going to try to save him, he is only 4. Please keep him in your prayers.

MARY S - thanks for the link to the latest John Henry pictures AND THE VIDEO! He looks darn good considering what he's gone through recently...obviously has had the best of care! And I just love the way he kept pawing the ground for more peppermins!

JONNAGREY - I've been having the same experience with the aides seeming to be overwhelmed...one sweet young thing said to me (in a positive manner), "Wow, you people are awesome - you never give up, do you?"....to which I replied, "NO, WE WON'T GIVE UP - make sure your boss knows that!"

What little I am able to do is all to honor (in jonna's words)" dappled with sun, thinner, gait all cattywhompus, but BARBARO. Still so proud, still so beautiful. Still ours...."

I LOVE THAT CATTYWHOMPUS BOY! And he is still ours, just beyond our present line of sight...

Extra Thursday 10/4 National Target List (HAHS)

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy (incl. Media Blitz) and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net
xxxxxxxxx
AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators:

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES? Here is today's (Thursday 10/4) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention HR 503, ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the current/new ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind.

The closure of Cavel is a BIG changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-459-1887

Also adding their votes (Y or N) on HR 249 (restoring former protection to wild equines). After the REST of your spiel, thank those who voted "Yes" and remind their staff that HR 249 only applies to WILD equines and we need HR 503 for the rest of them.

Lookee here - ALL the Senators on yesterday's AND today's (10/3 & 10/4) ABR contact lists, are also on this list. Seems like the strategy powers that be, are all concentrating on the same group of Senators. I will be sending this list out to ALL my contacts and using Nancy's "guilt" technique . . . NOW is the time . . . CJ

And now, the email containing info about this list (crossposted from HAHS Yahoo Group site):

Dear all-

Below is part of an email from Liz Ross who now works with Chris at AWI/SAPL. Liz knows the slaughter issue very well and work on this issue while she was with Doris Day Animal League. . . . Please bombard the below Senators with fax and phone calls and ask for support and co-sponsorship of S. 311.

Thanks-
Julie Caramante

Here's our target list in the Senate. All but Corker voted for our FY 06 Ag Approps amendment but their support on another Ag Approps amendment or S 311 is certainly not a given. We need letters and calls to these offices from all walks - equestrians, rescues, general public, kids, VIPs, etc. As I said, we need to be creative - Op Eds or letters to the editor in local papers are just one tactic. Of course, any communication should be respectful
Thanks again.

Repost - and adding this: (correct me if I'm wrong pls) - I believe GEVA is the Rescue favored by Harry Aleo, Lost In The Fog's human Dad. Thought that info may spur some contributions . . . CJ in Hammond IN

Urgent requests for funds to help offset ER vet expenses. Light the Avenue, a lovely CA bred retired OTTB has needed transportation and ER vet service at UC Davis med school twice in the last month for colic. His vet bills alone are now over $6000.00. Unfortunately, that means GEVA is beyond pressed for expenses right now. Can you help? Any donated amount is greatly welcomed! There is a pay pal at the bottom of Light's web page on our rescue site. Click the link below. We also have Dissy, another OTTB that has laminitis and is racking up vet and farrier bills of his own. Please, help us help the 32 rescue horses at GEVA.

I am SO with you in spirit - BUT - Unless and until federal legislation illegalizes slaughter of horses for human consumption and export for same, a human picket line such as what Joan envisions (and which I would join in a New York Minute) would violate the new federal anti-terrorism law as applied to animal industy, would it not? That's the law we were worrying about when it passed; forbids interference with animal industry, something like that. Discuss?

C. Jaffe...there would be so many there...I can see it...
You know what bothers me, that here in Texas...they are letting these horses get some water and maybe food, and then the horses are led through the chute...God help them, the horses think they are going to greener pastures, instead their blood is spilled, their throats slit, probably alive, feeling everything, and our federal government buries their head in s... (fill in the blanks)

It gets my goat!!! mildly.

Hay,FOB's!

Have sent Senator Casey the HSUS e-mail/video. I hope he gets enough of these to finally take a stand. Senator Specter and my rep have already co-sponsored. I know many of us (myself included) have sometimes felt overwhelmed by the intensity of what we see happening. But once we pull back and care for ourselves just for a short time, we come back to this work more determined to end this horror of slaughter and work to ensure that all living things live dignified, loving lives. Naive? possibly. But it gives me something to work toward. I'd rather be naive than numb.

All I'm saying is that the focus of the media in this country is on things like Spears, Paris Hilton, celebs in general...dragging the death photos from the Princess Diana crash back out--yet NEWER pictures--

We have our priorities off kilter. Just watched the Ellen Show as i do everyday, and in conversation; she's such a big animal supporter, lover. Where are these people when we need them?

This site is not the place to debate the relative merits of the obsession America has with our celebrities (some call this the American aristocracy.) But I will reiterate that I wish to God we had a fraction of the PR they get day in, day out, on TV, print, Internet and radio...

Yes, we need publicity. We need MONEY. Lots of money. with that we could have paid advertisements on every TV network. well, I dont guess we call it advertising. maybe an awareness campaign. I really believe most of the people in the U.S. (as Bill OReilly calls them "the folks") are not aware of the brutel death of our beautiful horses. I dont know if our elected officials really care (some do) but it is the people who elect them and that makes them sit up and take notice. I have wondered how many FOBs are and maybe if we all contributed we could get a tv time. well, I dont know. I know I am really frustrated with our elected officials. ###Kay Hutchinson may run for gov. of Texas. Think she will get my vote.?

mea culpa: blame it on the drugs--migraine, antibiotics for the Evil Sinuses> ARGH

It's MEERKAT. I'm a docent up at our zoo....i oughta know.

Our little original colony was traded with a group in China way back when...genetic diversity, all that. Anyhow. They were/are always a favorite with people of any age...the little muffins do their hawk/protection/standing tall thing even when there's a ceiling over their heads....

The article that Alex posted above is well worth the read! I am seeing more and more of this type of commentary as more people are beginning to wake up to some of the serious problems with the racing "industry"...it would be nice to believe that change is in the wind...

And, like our dear Lyn Gilbert, I would rather be naive than numb any day!

NOW...HOW MUCH WOULD WE NEED to give those _ss's the BOOT ?????(use your imagination to fill in the blanks)

HUGS and love....

Auntie Cheryl, it is a joy to read "bArbaro-speak" again. Hevvin is such a wonderful place...I know when my time comes, I will not be afraid because I'll see all those people and animals I've loved ready to greet me...if bArbaro talks to you again, please let us know...for some unknown reason I'm really emotional tonight so I'll let whatever has to come up...surface.

You are all the greatest.

There are people in Kentucky that are freely volunteering their time, doing everything possible to end horse slaughter & that care very much. I guess we are supposed to hang our heads in shame & wear the scarlet letter because our elected officials are not 100% behind the horse protection movement. To the people in Kentucky that I know are working so hard I would like to say thank you, I’m so proud of you & hold your head high. Shirl in KY.

jonnagrey says:
And--one more thing, as long as I am on a rant here--the entire state of Kentucky ought to be pounding on their official's doors. I would hang my head in disgrace if I was from KY and saw that these dolts are not 100% behind the horse protection movement.

Hiya, FsOB! Yes, it was great seeing that our FOB Cheryl Jones is channeling the voice of the Sublime One once again. I agree with Jonnagrey, for some odd reason, this week I keep thinking about Bobbey walking outside with Dr. Dean R. last Fall in the unusual warmth. I even said something out loud to a colleague today about it. Of course, almost everyone at work knows how much I still love the Big Bay One. My work space looks like a mini shrine to Bobbey and the Boston Red Sox (my apology to all the Yankees fans in the Barbaro Nation, I know there are lots of you.

And my thanks to Kate for sharing that editorial call to action from the San Antonio Express. It sure would be great if there could be a musical event in Texas, similar to the one that I believe was held in Wisconsin in August or September, to raise anti-slaughter awareness. Maybe Willie Nelson &/or Kinky Friedman might add their support to such an event? Just a thought....

#### Hello to Shirley in KY and Joanne Frank. Great to see you both. Has anyone heard from Jean Nolan recently, I miss seeing her here, too.
To Renee: I hope that you tests turned out well yesterday.
To Barb M.: I sure hope that Abel responds to the heartworm treatment. How sad! I keep getting that visual of him raising his paw, wanting to make friends. My eyes teared up. Lord know what that poor dog has been thru in the past four years. Blessings to you and to your vet.
To Maribel: You may want to ask Hans' surgeon if Hans may apply some cocoa butter creme not directly on the suture line, but adjacent to it. Perhaps if the adjacent region is kept smooth, it might decrease the traction on the suture line? Just a suggestion for you to consider discussing with the surgeon. Cocoa butter is very inexpensive in the drug store and no Rx is needed for it.
To Jennie in KY: Wow, how could I guess that Oktoberfest may've been tabled due to risk management concerns? But what a blast it used to be! My last Fall in Louisville was in 1984 and it was still being held then. (I must admit that when I went to the Oktoberfest in my late teens, I was never carded.) Lordy, the # of times my instep was almost smashed by big lugs doing the polka! Yes, the "Saturday in October" daily double (Keeneland followed by a home U of K game) was always a blast. I doubt if I'd have the energy for it at this stage of life, but again, what great memories. Enjoy, Jennie. ####

Congress has an 11% approval rating at this time. Cant they figure out why? Or maybe they are too busy lining their pockets with "kickback" blood money. I heard that congress and senate always insist on flying first class when they travel. Runs the govt millions of dollars. well, I just get so tired of them. I will have a mind set tomorrow and settle down. I know the FOBs wont give up-just like our Barbaro never gave up.

Strategy for Friday October 5

IMPORTANT NEWS!! Media Blitz began on Wednesday. We are targeting National Networks. Thanks for the great response so far!! For the Media Blitz letter and instructions go to
http://forums.prospero.com/alexbrown/messages/?msg=15267.1

The only way we will win this battle is with more awareness. We now know from our poll that we have a lot of support in the senate. This is a chance to get the rest of the undecided senators on board. There has been loads of attention lately regarding the horrendous conditions in the transport of our horses. Now that the plants have ceased operation in this county, we must grab this opportunity to push for legislation that will end the transport of horses to slaughter. Use this time wisely…..we are at a critical point and actually have a chance to make a difference!!

###Shirl121...Jonna would never slam the efforts of the FOB. Please re-read.

###Jonna...Cooper gets his staples out tomorrow. He is doing great. How are you feeling? Fiorinal does absoluting nothing for me. My Dr. tried to kill me (just kidding) the other day by giving me something called Maxalt. Not only did the headache not go away, I tossed for like 9 hours. I'd rather just have the headache. Love to you, fren...Kathy

BARB, I would like very much to donate to Abel's care, in your honor. It won't be very much, but it would be with all the gratitude one can feel for your level of commitment. I call it heroic. I think one dog, one horse, one animal at a time is a good way to go to make a real difference, but it gets so hard at times. Thank you for all you do.

Please email me at cmagan@aol.com.

For the love of Barbaro..

Sorry, I re-read your post and saw it differently. Was very tired when I read it & also a little sensitive about the fact that some of our elected officials in KY have not supported the horses. Horses represent the state of Kentucky & everyday when I go to work I see their images on license plates, in front of businesses & they are on government stationery. It is mystifying & sad that the senators & 2 reps from KY have not stepped up to the plate & have so far ignored this legislation.

I am asking for FOB prayers. I believe they are so powerful - and they are needed now for a little colt. He had surgery today on his right front leg. He has survived the surgery, and I am asking you to lift him up with prayer, for a complete and easy recovery. Please also pray for his peace of mind, and tranquil spirit as he recovers.

Thank you.

i weep for it all.
.tears that clean and tears that shed
and tears that inform
of some great divine love.
.
for THE WHISKER FAMILY
their great leader and matriarch

IN MEMORY OF FLOWER----

the kalahari rolls ruthless;y forward
in the dust storms and in howling winds
rushing over africa
in between patches of green shrubs
and azure clear skies
until the violent rainy season
rips the red orange earth
into river s of moving mud
beside the high population of dangerous snakes
there are many
predators for little meerkats
to be concerned about on a daily basis ..minute to minute
touches of lord of the flies and the rise and fall of the roman empire
all the traits of rotting character or an imbalanced
aggressive strand
in their civilization
tearing at and
embedded in their story for survival
we sure can recognize
our failures and our selves
in their daily struggles and victories
she was the leader
the matriarch and
she ruled her roost wiht an iron will .
.clear boundaries and daily consistent rituals

during this year of Barbaro;s life in my life

the meerkat manor provided me with perspective
and a way to see how my society behaves.
.giving me tools
to cope with the stress of my high voltage city
and the life i have chosen

i am deeply proud and grateful for
these little vignettes which inform my life today ,too

and to the dear fan of barbaro
who posted a thread on her passing yesterday

flower died defending her new born cubs
-- of a snake bite
a snake ready to eat her young
the sting was lethal ..you culd see it in mozart several months ago..
delivered to her taught little frame
on january 27th and she died the same day Barbaro left
us here on earth the 29th

we who are devoted to the family antics
of three major family meerkat units
found out september 28th
but i found out last night
i cut out --yesterday eve
the photo of her darling little snout
and that tracking collar
she ignored the consequences if
it meant a save..
as she proceeded with her daily life
filled with action
to defend and feed her family-
talk
about integrity courage and loyalty

i A;LSO
recall a fan of barbaro
months ago writing

''i think the meerkat manor is depressing and i hate the series''

i actually laughed non stop..
because she was right .
.
it is very tough life being a meerkat in the kalahari
one of the earth's most unfriendly unforgiving
environments.
.a brutal
taxing existence
in which the meerkats
despite what ever trauma had been visited
they would
every morning
set about cleaning their doorways
start fresh
and then proceed to hunt for breakfast

at night
they would gather at the burrow doorway
to watch the sun set
gazing with great intensity UPWARDS

..it was spellbinding

i dont know about you
but i have friends who i love
who have not looked up into the sky or counted stars
held hands or snuggled under a quilt ..
for a long time-
-some even think that is progress

i also have friends who are as romantic as i am
and have the fatal flaw of loving every creature in need
and every creature in joy

the state of awe
that flower
inspired and brought to me ..
her strength was something to behold

i have wept and found quiet ways
today to honor her
and perhaps my dancing
was a bit more skittish them normal
as if to reflect her bounce and how she flew
over the rough terrain looking for food and charing the invading
enemies

there is nothing romantic about nature
really--talk abut the great terminator..
mother earth has her ruthless
determined patterns
to fulfill her mysterious form of justice and balance

tonight
i honor all those researchers who must have held their hearts
wanting to save flower
as she died an agonizing and excruciating death
from the snake poison
how interesting a metaphor
something so lovely
to die for such a noble virtue as loyalty
an instinct for sure
alive and well

a lot of gumption for me to admire

so what remains
i whisper

LOVE

to her
to Barbaro
for opening my heart that feels like the great amazon river
huge endless space
and under duress wants to crumple up and hide.
.
i smelt and tasted and observed
the great flowing tributaries fo the amazon
for the first ten years of my live

what remains--
in visible and invisible matter
molecules pristine and molten
compressed fiber and glowing strands

is

love

martita
