Barbaro Updates: 400

updates are now here.

Update 2535: Old time favorite, The Tin Man, returns to the races on Saturday after his most recent second in the Arlington Million: The Tin Man thriving ahead of Clement L. Hirsch, excerpt:

"I think you'd probably see it with more horses if they got to stay around until they're nine," Mandella said on Tuesday. "He's really learned his game and he's a true professional. I attribute that mostly to him being nine years old, and he's just had a lot of time to learn.

"He's just matured to where he knows exactly what he's doing all the time," Mandella continued. "He's very happy with himself and confident and that's a luxury to have that many years with a horse to get to go through that."

Update 2534: The Keeneland meet opens on friday and it opens with mulitple stakes over the first three days: Keeneland opens with dash to Cup and Darley Alcibiades highlights Keeneland's opening day and Strong Alcibiades Field Kicks off Keeneland Racing.

Update 2533: I have really enjoyed my time in racing, and have worked for some great people over the years for sure. Fair Hill was great for me, basically I have been very lucky. And now I have found a job that I cannot imagine being better (I really hope I keep it for the meet!) Today I rode seven horses, all went nicely and it was just a pleasure to be around the horses. One horse I rode had just come in from a farm. He was by far the best ride I had for the morning. Just floated around the polytrack. Very classy. A couple of others I rode are Stakes winners, basically if you don't like a job like this you have to quit horses altogther.

Again three of my sets were before dawn, under the lights. When the fourth set came around you could see the other people and horses better. One site that is becoming familiar is seeing one set of a large string of horses, jogging by. It reminds me of a duck, leading her ducklings on an adventure. I am sure they would not appreciate that characterization, but it is the first thing that comes to mind. Not sure which trainer it is.

After finishing work this morning, I went to get my Kentucky license. On my way back I stopped by Michael Matz's barn. He has three stalls and horses here. Pam is running the operation and Eduardo is also here. They have three runners this weekend which includes a 2yo for the Jackson's. He's a nice looking dude. Anyway, the whose who in racing is here, the meet starts on friday and hopefully it will then be a fun three weeks.

Update 2532: We have another review of last weekend's racing and look forward to the Breeders' Cup, this time from Steve Haskin: Steve Haskin's BC Countdown: Questions and Answers; Winners and Losers, it begins:

Now, that was a super weekend of racing. Whether it was Turfway Park's Polytrack, Santa Anita's Cushion track, or the dirt track at Belmont, this was racing at its best. The races were thrilling, formful, and showcased a good number of the sport's top stars, including most of the big names in the 3-year-old crop, which looks to be one the strongest and most exciting ever.

Today is media blitz day!

MORNING POST SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI -- IT'S MEDIA BLITZ DAY (also posted separately, below this...)

Strategy for Wednesday October 3

IMPORTANT NEWS!! Media Blitz begins on Wednesday October 3. We will be targeting National Networks. For the Media Blitz letter and instructions go to
http://forums.prospero.com/alexbrown/messages/?msg=15267.1

The only way we will win this battle is with more awareness. We now know from our poll that we have a lot of support in the senate. This is a chance to get the rest of the undecided senators on board. There has been loads of attention lately regarding the horrendous conditions in the transport of our horses. Now that the plants have ceased operation in this county, we must grab this opportunity to push for legislation that will end the transport of horses to slaughter. Use this time wisely…..we are at a critical point and actually have a chance to make a difference!!

MEDIA BLITZ STRATEGY REPOST

Hello FOB's
Please remember the MEDIA BLITZ WEDNESDAY OCT. 3RD. WE NEED EVERYONE'S HELP!! Our Strategy will include the link that will take you directly to the thread. SAMPLE BELOW:
-----------------------------------------------

SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES

MEDIA BLITZ/STARTING WEDNESDAY, OCT. 3RD AND CONTINUING THROUGHOUT THE WEEK!!

Below is the letter to be used for this next media blitz! This time we are targeting the National Networks.

With the three slaughter plants closed down, this letter is specifically designed to draw attention to the cruel and inhumane transport of our American horses being exported to Canada and Mexico.

NOW WE KNOW and MORE AMERICANS NEED TO KNOW and you can help create awareness by sending this letter out to all of the media outlets on the list below.

Calling all FOB's again to MAKE THAT DIFFERENCE! We're asking you once again to HELP US INITIATE the biggest media blitz this country has ever seen to SAVE OUR HORSES! RAISE YOUR VOICES ONCE MORE and help make this media blitz a success!

Good Luck and keep us posted if you hear back from any of the media.
Shelley and Debra

Please copy this letter and email to all of the Networks you will find below: A SPECIAL THANKS TO MARY L. FOR HELPING US MAKE THIS EASIER. ALL MEDIA EMAIL ADDRESSES ARE PASTED BELOW. PLEASE FOLLOW HER DIRECTIONS FOR AN EASY 1,2,3 and SEND AWAY!!!

The letter:

WE CAN’T WAIT ANY LONGER
THE SLAUGHTER OF OUR HORSES MUST END

Barbaro was not just the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner who tragically broke down at the Preakness Stakes. Barbaro was a catalyst for change. As some watched for his recovery, more joined the vigil. Soon thousands were hoping he would win his battle. We became aware of the fortitude and will of horses to live. We also became aware of issues that hindered them from doing so.

Most of us did not know that American horses were slaughtered in the United States by foreign companies who sent their meat overseas for human consumption. The meat is not used to feed the poor but as a high priced delicacy.

We did not know of the inhumane methods these foreign companies used.
We did not know that over 100,000 horses were slaughtered in America last year.
We did not know that young, healthy and even pregnant horses were killed in our country to feed wealthy Europeans.
We did not know about the brutal transportation of these magnificent animals to slaughter houses operating here, as well as in Mexico and Canada.
We did not know about their chilling and horrendously painful deaths.

NOW WE KNOW. AND NOW YOU NEED TO KNOW TO HELP STOP THIS ATROCITY FOREVER.

In recent years, three plants in the United States slaughtered horses for human consumption. Two in Texas closed after a state law prohibited this practice. While the Cavel plant in Illinois just lost their appeal and temporary injunction to operate, they still have other appeal options available which could possible allow them to resume slaughtering our horses. The final decision depends on a legal battle waged by the Belgian Company against the Illinois government who recently signed a bill outlawing slaughter.

We must keep it that way, not just in Illinois or in Texas, but in all of the states.

Even if there is never another horse slaughter operation in our country, the horrendous transport of our horses to Canada and Mexico will continue unless we fight for that to end. Often they are trucked 36 hours or longer, without food and water and even unable to stand upright. T heir trip is a brutal one. They are frequently injured while being transported. As brutally as our horses were executed in the U.S. the method used in their deaths across our borders is more gruesome.

The American people must stop allowing kill buyers to take these innocent animals across U.S. borders. Please step forward and be counted. Contact your elected Representative and Senator to urge passage of the American Horse Slaughter Protection Act (H.R. 503 in the House of Representatives and S311 in the Senate) to stop the slaughter and transport for slaughter of our horses. The states that were sites of slaughter houses have registered their disdain for this practice in the United States. It is time that our national legislators vote to ban supplying our horses to other countries to suffer this terrible fate.

In 2005, nearly 20,000 American horses were shipped live to Canada and Mexico for slaughter. Let's make sure the number for 2008 is 0. Famous or not, horses aren't spared. Ferdinand, who won the 1986 Kentucky Derby, was tragically sent to a Japanese slaughter plant in 2002. Children's pet horses are stolen and sold for slaughter.

How can we as a nation let this cruel and inhumane treatment continue? Horses are not bred or raised for food like cows, chickens or pigs. They are companion animals, sport animals and work animals. Our soldiers rode them into battle. Horses have contributed so much to this great country. How can we continue to let them die in this fashion?

We can't wait any longer. BECAUSE NOW WE KNOW!

Good Wednesday morning FOBs

Thank you Friar Tuck for posting the media list again. I had copied the list from the DB and somehow I got one of the addresses wrong and my email program wouldn't send because of it. I wasted more time going through each address and still couldn't find the mistake. I'm going to start with this new list and try again. I'll get it done if I have to type each one individually.

Have a great and productive day everyone!

Sorry if this is a duplicate, but I just noticed on the HSMO website, there are updates from 9/24/07 on the horses that survived the trailer accident last year. Of the 26 that survived the accident, Darlin, Princess and Buckwheat were later put down. 13 still need homes.

LADY AT THE FENCE UPDATE.....:)

Good Wednesday Morning, ABR Famblee....I posted this last night on equine-heaven.com and wanted to share with you, my Famblee here:) I've been away for a couple of weeks, 'cause I just needed a break from 'mis-steps' on the tracks...but as always, visiting MISTER & ROSIE brings warmth to my heart and a BIGGGG SMILLLLLLLLLE to my face, and wanted to share this 'feel good' time with you!

Hope y'all are 'dine&fandy'....ENJOY:)

O.K. FAMBLEE :) I'm on cloud ONE THOUSAND:) I've just come home from smooooooooshing...and stroking/petting/kissing/feeling EVERY INCH of those HORSIES:) sigh!.....I discovered VERY LARGE VEINS inside Mister's hind legs tonight!! OMYGOODNESS!!! Very LARGE veins!! And sooooooo 'soft' hairs there...and guess what else:) He has VERY soft hairs inside his front legs, tooooooo:) And the hairs there are strawberry blonde...not dark brown/bay/copper there:)

He saw me pull in..:) He/they were wayyyyyy out in the pasture and just on the other side of the fence were FOUR brand new baby calves:) Black ones...Angus, I assume! Anyway, UP POPS MISTER'S HEAD....brown grasses hanging out each side of his horsey mouth:) Ohhhhhh! He KNEW it was MEEEEEEE:) He began walking across that pasture lickity-splickity:) I had to go inside and see horsemommy for a few minutes...I had brought her things from Wally World...He stood at that fence the WHOLE time...'lusting' at the front door....waiting for me to emerge:) And YES:) Then I DID emerge:) Oh Goody! Oh Goody! I unhooked two of the three electric fence wires and climbed underneath...:) THERE HE WAS!!! RIGHT IN MY FACE, THANK YOU VERY MUCH:) Into his pen he went..gave him some 'carits' then got Miss Rosie into her pen...gave her some...horsemommy came inside to feed Rosie, so I 'beat-feet' right next door to be w/my BOYFRIEND:) I fed him his pellets...and a few more carits...:) Then you guys...I just stood there and leaned into him...stroked him..hand brushed all the loose grasses and dirt from his hair:) rubbed his belly...sigh! kisses on his neck and his sides and his butt and his shoulders!!! Every once in awhile, I'd use my hands and move all those liddle pellets into a tidy pile so he didn't have to work so hard at getting them into his horsey mouth:)

Horsemommy cleaned Rosie's troff..re-filled it w/fresh water..scooped poop..I never left his stall....I just stayed in there breathing him in...and touching the whole time! It was BEYOND HEVVIN!! :) Horsemommy said she was coming to check on me, 'cause it was soooooo quiet for such a long time:) I told her I am fine...just having 'moments' with my BOYFRIEND:)

Then we came out of the stall, all the pellets were gone....they shared carrots...Molly, the Black Labradoris from the next ranch over..where the baby calves were...came to have her bath in the troff....:/ and mom and I stood talking and I was skritching butts to my heart's content!!! It was, as it always is...a SUPER time for me!!! I would NEVER get anything DONE in this LIFE, if I owned a horsey...I'd be out there with them ALL THE TIME!!!:) I'm going back tomorrow...Horsemommy said it's been too long, and I need to come again toorrow...did I argue? NOPE:) I'm going again tomorrow:) I'm sorry this is so long....but I had a lot to say:)

Good morning everyone and HAPPY MEDIA BLITZ DAY!

I had an opportunity to meet Susan E. Saturday night on our way back from Kentucky. She is as kind, beautiful, funny, caring and amazing as one could imagine. She met her new "niece", Emma, the Border Collie puppy we drove down to get.

While in KY, we visited Keeneland, a horse farm I used to work at and the stable area of Churchill Downs. It was all like going home to me, and it was good to be back there. And Robyn, I stopped by the UK campus too!

I told Susan she had to drive to visit there too, it's not that long of a drive from eastern MO, where she is.

On the interstate driving, I frequently saw horse vans and would scrutinize the drivers quite carefully and say a prayer all horses were headed for safety.

On to blitzing the media, as only we can!!!!

Make it a great day everyone!

Posted by: Skyler at October 3, 2007 3:20 PM

Good Morning Everyone,
It's cloudy I think Barbaro is over sleeping this morning.

If anyone is contacted or see's the name RESCUE, Inc.out of Kentucky or Minnesota please be careful. This is a very dangerous woman who will lie to get ahead, and wants to take over all the hard work we have done for rescues and horses.Get the word out to all rescue's that you are connected to. That is all I can say at this time.

Another thing my rescue man the farmer...I have seen things there too. He has a cult that meets on his property once a week and does horrible things like brainwashes innocent children. I never saw a sick, starving or injured hores there so the rescue stories are a lie, what a shame. Please do not support anything that has to do with Cupid and Arrow, it will go to the cult. I feel so bad they are very special horses in a bad place. It is incredible what we see after a while. There are much better places here with horses to go to.He is trying to make me look bad since I attacked the cult and left.

Good Morning Barbaro,
Wake up sweetie!

Posted by: Renee Antaya at October 3, 2007 3:20 PM

####
But Renee

How can we help Cupid and Arrow and the others...I pray the farmer does not let them go neglected or sell them to KBs!!!!!!

Posted by: joan roya at October 3, 2007 3:40 PM

I have spritzed and blitzed.oy. Nothing has kicked back yet, in fact a few confirmations from networks...

I also tried to cut some of Loretta;s nails. Invested in a kennel nylon muzzle which will allow them to snarl, growl and make the noises of hell, but not bite....

Some greyhound kennels have SLINGS in which they put their charges to get to THEIR nails...nails seem to be a BIG issue with many greys..Loretta allowed me to get three THREE!!! cut before she was about to explode in paroxysms of snarling, leaping, spitting like a cobra, twirling, lunging and so forth. I put her in a crate with a cookie and undid the nylon thingie. She's been GLARING at me ever since. This is just so much fun.

I figure we'll get one-three done a week till Christmas...She is such a pisser. So was her mother, and HER mother...she was , however, a monster runner, until she blew out her right rear hock--a very common racing injury...

anyhow: i hope everyone has a fine day with the
blitzing. and the calling. Keep Going. Keep marching. We get it. (Loretta DOES NOT Get it...)
Oy....

joan,
They are not neglected in any way, they are very well taken care of by the kids. Cupid and Arrow are still his show horses and will remain there after the farm is foreclosed on in 90 days. I wish I could get them out of there just because of the cult thing. They think I am evil and have split personality. Well I am a Gemini.LOL My head is on straight. I just saw too much. One of the horses who is not the nicest was hit kicked punched called evil, screamed at she is still a living creature and does not deserve that kind of treatment, mean or not. A baby goat a year old is abused, by grabbing her horns, hitting, kicking, slapping.I saw a few tings I did not like but stuck around to make sure of what I was seeing. I'm not crazy, just very observant and speak my mind which I did now he is very angry with me. The truth hurts. ;)

Renee...one horses was kicked..a baby goat...slapped, etc....but Cupid and Arrow taken care of....and the farm is being foreclose???

Hay wonder if this is a good prospect for a rescue place...if the farm is in foreclosure???

Yup, bad huh? Made me sick to see it.

joan,
It is a beautiful place around 80 acres, with about six barns, indoor and outdoor arena's, riding trails. Just a beuatiful place for horses and humans. It is also very peaceful with nice people from the other barns. There is even a wild mustang who was brought in not by Buck, Luna, she is adjusting well and is so pretty.

Yes Joan to your question. It made me crazy to see it. Cupid and Arrow are his prize horses. She is pregnant along with others in mares field.

SENATE TARGETS from AWI/SAPL

Crossposting from HAHS Yahoo Group Site. ASAP I will add the fax and phone numbers for each of these offices. CJ in Hammond IN (btw again there is a delay in obtaining the usual HAHS list and I will post ASAP both here and at the DB.)

Just as with the extra HAHS lists I post every weekday - PLEASE be sure to complete what the ABR Strategy and your State group call for BEFORE attacking this new Senate Target List. Today's strategy includes the new Media Blitz. PLEASE complete all that and then, for DESSERT - treat yourself to THIS Target list. (Some of them are on today's ABR list as well.)

Dear all-

Below is part of an email from Liz Ross who now works with Chris at AWI/SAPL. Liz knows the slaughter issue very well and work on this issue while she was with Doris Day Animal League. Sorry I didn't get the contact info for the Senators, but most of you probably have it already. Please bombard the below Senators with fax and phone calls and ask for support and co-sponsorship of S. 311.

Thanks-
Julie Caramante

Here's our target list in the Senate. All but Corker voted for our FY 06 Ag Approps amendment but their support on another Ag Approps amendment or S 311 is certainly not a given. We need letters and calls to these offices from all walks - equestrians, rescues, general public, kids, VIPs, etc. As I said, we need to be creative - Op Eds or letters to the editor in local papers are just one tactic. Of course, any communication should be respectful

More sad news today (this from WestWind Horse Rescue in Ohio) "10-03-07 Sad to have to say we lost the Walker gelding "Buddy", (I was calling him Buddy last night while we worked with the vet & staff). After a long night, and a tremendous effort trying to get him back on his feet, it was decided early this morning that he was suffering & should be euthanized. It is never easy to lose any horse, but losses like this make us even more determined to help horses that need it. Buddy will be buried on our farm."

PLEASE LIGHT A CANDLE FOR BUDDY

This is the poor dear creature who had a 43-pound tumor completely surrounding his genitals - he was received at the rescue just a few days ago, and survived the surgery...and now he is at peace.
HOWEVER, I just want to kill the evildoers (never thought I'd be quoting our President - LOL) who allowed this situation to progress to the point of no return!

Rest in peace, dear BUDDY, and may light perpetual shine upon you.

We have to stop the horses going to Mexico and Canada. Horses were treated humanely (not in our standards) when slaughtered here in the U.S. as compared to Mexico, etc. I think maybe so many of our politicians think horses are livestock not pets. You can bet if it were dogs being sent to slaughter in Mexico it would be stopped. The Americian people would rise up. I am a worker in dog rescue but when our local animal shelter puts the dogs and cats down it is done with a needle and they go very peacefully. I just know shipping our horses to Mexico and Canada has to be stopped. so we will do an all out media blitz. The average Americian is not aware of the suffering the horses go through. It all goes back (whether it is dogs, cats or horses) to their owners irresponsibility. I think when a person gets an animal it is a lifetime responsibily (cant spell-too upset) . well, just wanted to blow off some steam.

They need to see it before they will believe how horrific it is. To sever a spine Dear God...I can't even imagine. God bless them all everyday of their lives. Politicians need to wake up,it will determine my vote for sure.

Nancy, thank you so much for telling about Buddy at my local rescue here where I live... I am just beyond heartbroke over his death and his abuse he had to endure.

I just do not understand some of the "humans" on this earth that can allow a horse to suffer like that and do NOTHING..

There are people like me that would do anything in the world to have a horse to love and care for.. and then to see what the ones that do have horses do to them.. Just totally unfair...

This one has hit me really hard since it was so close to me.. I was so trying to get support for him, it gave me my "fight" back again to be able to help... and now.. How do you fight against people that just do not care to do the right thing?... So many like Buddy that are suffering and need help, but too many turn the other way and do nothing... The laws suck for cruelty in Ohio and my county..

I am just beyond heart broke over his loss... my heart just can't take it all... What a insane and cruel world we live in... so unbalanced.. Where is their justice???

Renee and Sandra:

I feel the same way...and we have to get this done...blitz media,..blitz...but I feel that if Congress ignores us...that they will never get the blood stains off their hands. NEVER!!!

On the news this morning....146 Million dollars wasted because the federal employees flies 1st class...and not suppose to...unless medical ailments. I can think of several useful places for this money.

OH YES...HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO STEPHANIE AT MHR.

Mary L....I feel the same way...and pray the owners can be found and prosecuted.....we have so much to do...if only Congress would pass this bill...can you imagine how we could help horses and animals....?

BUT FIRST GET THIS DOGGONE BILL PASSED AND TIME IS RUNNING OUT FOR US...AND OUR HORSES LIVES ARE CERTAINLY RUNNING OUT.

Posted by: joan roya at October 3, 2007 6:00 PM

Renee, I guess I disagree.. I don't see how he is really better off being dead... He did not deserve what happened to him.. Buddy deserved to be loved and alive.. not dead...

Is death a better place than being alive?

sorry but just upset and depressed and mad as heck over this.... He did not deserve to die...

I will take the next few days off to work thru this.. go and pick what flowers are still blooming around here and go and visit Buddy's grave...

I will tell him.. I am sorry for the cruelty of the human race and you had to suffer so... But for 5 days you were loved, and will be missed... You did not ask for this, and I am sorry you had to only know cruelty until the end....

###Mary L Ohio, I understand the pain you are feeling over the senseless loss of Buddy. There have been way too many losses of the horses. I have pretty much lost my faith in mankind. I cannot fathom how people can hurt animals or children, yet every day there seems to be another horror story. When will it stop? How can it go on? The heartbreak is too much.

Take care Mary, my prayers for you to find some peace. It will take a while, I know.

I guess it is a good thing I dont live in ElPaso (live 500 miles away) as I might lose all control and take my 38 pistole or shotgun and go nuts where they were being unloaded and blow the killers away. Juarez is about 2 miles from the city limits of el paso so maybe I could get away. well, maybe the FOBs might post bond for me. As all yole can tell I am really MAD about the hell our beautiful horses have to go through. well, I will calm down and maybe tonight I wont beso violent. But I doubt it.

Posted by: Nancy in CT at October 3, 2007 8:10 PM

Well, I am completely deranged today over our horses being slaughtered. I decided to sit and watch TV for a few minutes and calm down. Right off on fox news they were saying PETA is letting Michael Vick take a short class on "Animal Sensitivity". PETA also stated that they know he is just taking the course for legal reasons. Of course, he is as he is hoping for a lighter sentence. Now the NFL want all the football players to take the course. I have decided to concentrate on media blitz and turn the TV off. I cant take much more.

I have never been to all that many different racetracks, but I think that Keeneland has got to be one of the most beautiful and the setting it's in is just breathtaking, in my opinion. While you are in Lexington, I do hope you will have enough time to go to the Kentucky Horse Park - it's one of my favorite places in the world. ya know, Sandra, I think a fitting "session" for Michael (ick) Vick would be to put him naked in a closed, locked, bare room, with no place to hide with oh, say 50 or 60 pit bulls. Let's imagine them to be 50 or 60 love bugs, as we know them to be, but HE wouldn't know that. For all he'd know, they would be "trained killers". Wouldn't that be sweet?

Extra Wednesday 10/3 National Target List (HAHS)

[Sorry this was posted so late again today; delay in getting list from HAHS. CJ]

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy (INCLUDING MEDIA BLITZ) and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net
xxxxxxxxx
AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators:

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES? Here is today's (Wednesday 10/3) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311, ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the current/new ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter NOW.

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind.

The closure of Cavel is a BIG changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-459-1887

800-614-2803

Prior HS History: All the Senators on today's list voted for the Ensign-Byrd Agriculture Appropriations Amendment in September 2005 but have not yet cosponsored S 311. Of this list only Sen. Schumer (NY) cosponsored S 1915 last session.

We are all hurting from the senseless cruelty and stupidity that we see everyday. I don't have any magic words to offer anyone to make the ache in our hearts any better. But one thing I do know is this: While we may be knocked off our moorings by the cruelty and indifference of other people, we can throw each other lifelines and offer each other support and we do, each and every day.Because we are not like "them." We get it: someone ( I guess that would be us!) has to extend that hand of caring to these horses who have no one but other people like us ( I mean this in the global sense of all who care about the well-being of animals.) We have to help keep other strong to continue this fight. So ,for those of you whose hearts are breaking from the losses of these innocent creatures, we all understand. But please don't turn away from them (and us) because it hurts so often. Rest your beautiful caring souls for a while but please come back when you are ready and pick another horse or herd of them to care about. Whatever it takes : your prayers, your cash, your time volunteering at a rescue or making calls , or even just your loving good thoughts-- all of that I truly believe will be known by our horse friends in their time of need.

Slaughter of American Horses in Mexico is Indefensible -

Congress Must Pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act Now

Washington, DC (Oct. 3, 2007) - Now that horse slaughter has effectively ended in the United States, the pro-horse slaughter camp is claiming it was right about the need to keep slaughter an option in the US. They say that our horses are facing a far worse fate in Mexico and Canada than they were when they could be slaughtered in America. This is yet another “red-herring” argument advanced by the pro-horse slaughter side to distract humane Americans from the ultimate goal of protecting all American horses from slaughter via passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 311/HR. 503). This legislation will end the slaughter of American horses here and their export for slaughter abroad.

Because there is no legitimate defense of horse slaughter as a “necessary evil,” organizations supporting the cruelty such as the American Farm Bureau, American Veterinary Medical Association and American Association of Equine Practitioners, have promoted various myths to defend the abhorrent practice. First, they told everyone that cruelty would increase without slaughter, but data from California and Illinois proved just the opposite to be true. They told everyone that horse abandonment would be epidemic if slaughter was no longer an option, yet once again the facts and historical evidence deemed this to be untrue. In fact, these two arguments, if taken to have any credibly, would imply that horse slaughter offers a financial reward to individuals who would illegally neglect or abandon their horses if the cruel option of slaughter were withdrawn.

Now these few groups and the remnants of the domestic horse slaughter industry are circulating a new myth - that they were acting on humane principals in fighting a ban on horse slaughter, arguing that it would be worse for the horses to be sent to Mexico or Canada for slaughter. Ironically, this is perhaps the single point on which both sides agree. “The fate of horses being sent to slaughter in Mexico is horrific, however, we are working to stop it while the pro-horse slaughter camp fights to perpetuate the cruelty,” says Animal Welfare Institute Deputy Legislative Director, Chris Heyde.

Not only are these organizations actively lobbying Congress to block passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, which would prohibit the export of our horses to Mexico for slaughter, but the pro-horse slaughter lobby, which consists of the groups mentioned above and the owners of the Cavel, BelTex and Dallas Crown horse slaughterhouses, fails to mention that the plants (specifically BelTex and Cavel) are actively buying tens of thousands of American horses and shipping them to Mexico and Canada for slaughter. They are actively engaged in a trade which they admit leads to increased animal cruelty.

As leaders in the campaign to end horse slaughter, the Animal Welfare Institute’s primary goal has always been passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. “Only with this legislation will we have the tools to stop horses from being exported to other countries for slaughter,” states Heyde. “If the American Veterinary Medical Association and other contingents of the pro-horse slaughter lobby are truly concerned about the suffering of American horses at the hands of Mexican slaughterhouse workers, now is the time to join us in working to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act into law.”

Well, we're all in the crumbly stage. I got hit with the biggest, baddest, meanest migraine on the way back from my doc's office getting antibiotics for my messed up sinuses...it hit me on the highway to pick up some stuff at BJ's wholesale.

Prayed my way through there that I wouldn't lose the cookies until i got home, and i did make it...shut all the light out of the house on this beautiful day and was immediately beset upon by loretta, jessie and Boxer because they always know when I feel like crap...

anyhow. Buddy. Buddy. Buddy....like truly sucks this afternoon. I was so afraid it was going that way. Whoever owned that beautiful boy could have taken care of that growth months, weeks ago...it didn't come up overnight. These things would have made me hate people, except for the people i know in GH rescue and the FoBs of course...

How many times have you guys saved me, and you've never known...

Somehow, Barbaro squeezed into my kitchen and helped me feed these 11 dogs...lots of prep with diff. diets. thank you Big Colt...

Hang in there, my dears. it is all we have for now. Here we are....standing on the edge of the possible success of our efforts...if we don't do it this year, we will next year. We simply must.

Strawberry Mustangs is still in need of $1500 for their hay storage. The Oregon winter is fast approaching and they have already raised $8000. This is the rescue that save Mac, the colt with the horrible leg injury. His previous owner did nothing as the wound keep getting bigger and deeper. He looks great now-see the pictures on the thread. Please help if you can.

*** Hey Jonna, I hear you. Got a big, bad migraine last Friday, which led into a lovely sinus infection. Have you ever tried Xanax? If you have not, ask your doctor. It really works. I use Xanax and an ice pack.

*** Sandra, hear you too. I have had those same thoughts. Burning dogs, leaving pets in extreme hot weather locked in their cars, forgetting about them, dog fighting, horse slaughter, etc., the list is way too long! It's all getting to be too much. Mankind really makes me sick. I just don't know about the world today.

American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign wrote [excerpts below]:

Action Alert: Sheldon comment period extended

Thank you to all of you who, despite the short notice, managed to send your comments to the Fish and Wildlife Service last week regarding the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge. Our protests were not in vain, as the comment period has now been extended until Tuesday, October 9. Those who did not have enough time to send their comments last week should take advantage of this extension to have their voices heard by emailing sheldon-hart@fws.gov, or writing to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, P.O. Box 111, Lakeview, OR 97630. [another link, omitted so this will post.]

Below are suggested talking points for comments in response to the EA:

-- Support Alternative A: no round-ups until a full Environmental Impact Statement is completed and scientific analysis of impact is done not only of the horses and burros, but of other wildlife like pronghorn, deer, sage grouse, and other species (only then would we consider the removal of animals equal to documented annual increase in population, in order to maintain a relatively stable population of horses and burros).

-- The proposed draft EA is a significant federal action that is controversial and requires a full Environmental Impact Statement to comply with the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA).

-- Demand that in the event that round-ups are conducted, they be done on horseback and not by helicopters or other motorized vehicles.

-- Demand a diverse and neutral oversight committee in regards to any future management decisions affecting the Refuge's wild horses and burros.

On behalf of America's wild horses, thank you for your support,

The AWHPC Team

Hiya, FsOB! Alex, your descriptions of the morning workouts at Keeneland are as vibrant & lovely as the ones that you created while you were at Fair Hill. The sights, the sounds, the tactile experiences - all so well-described. Keeneland is truly a magical place.

#### To Jennie in Louisville: Is the Oktoberfest still occurring in Louisville each year on the first weekend in October? Great memories from those events in Butchertown back in the 70s and early 80s. Ditto for the St. James Art Fair in Old Louisville.
To Skyler: I must admit that I am a Univ. of Louisville grad, not a U of K grad. My ex attended the latter school before we met. It was what was considered a "mixed marriage" (U of L, U of K) in the 1970s in the Commonwealth of KY.
Hello to Mary L. in Ohio!
To Renee, please take care. I hope that the EKG results are good ones. Please let us know how you're doing, OK?
To jonnagrey & Kathy in SC: I am very sorry that you were both plagued by migraines today. How awful! I haven't had a migraine since 1982, knock wood. ####

#### Candle alert: John Henry (see JohnH) only has 9 candles lit on gratefulness. Bobbey and Foggy are in the # 1 & 2 spots, but could use more candles, too. ####

Mary L (and others but esp mary)

I saw the pain in your post today about Buddy, I think many understand your pain and hurt.. Such a senseless cruelty he had to suffer.

And no, death is not what he really needed either.. Life would have been far better, but we do not understand why some have to leave us. I do not understand the cruelty some people can do to horses.

I know you have Lost dreams with wanting to be with a horse again (hey I read what you have posted on the DB!) and how much you miss the world you once had around the mighty TB. I wish life was kinder for you and the kind of pain and hurt you are feeling today would never happen to you again, as we all know how much you love these horses and want to help them out. We all hurt along side of you for Buddy and the rest we have lost recently......

Take your time and mourn Buddy, and the rest but find that inner strength to come back and fight for more "Buddys". They need you....

Here is a special song for you, Buddy and the other FOB's hurting today, may it find you some comfort.

IMPORTANT NEWS!! Media Blitz began on Wednesday. We are targeting National Networks. Thanks for the great response so far!!

Hello Laurie H., Bart, Montego and Nipper. I was truly touched reading about little Nipper. Another sweet innocent to be concerned about. I pray Nipper's next home will be loving and caring. How is dear Bart? Is Montego doing well? Last but certainly not least, how are YOU, Laurie?

Have a good evening. Will write again soon.
