Barbaro Updates: 397

updates are now here.

Update 2516: Some great racing this weekend and many of our top horses are competing. Superfecta covers a few of the races: It's On.

Off back to Presque Isle Downs to get Hawty Creek ready for her race, the first on this evening's card.

Update 2515: A short morning this morning for me. I went in to Presque Isle Downs with Dave, Hawty Creek's owner trainer. We mucked two stalls, Hawty walked the shedrow, then I rode the other horse who is running in the first race saturday night. We were all done in less than a couple of hours. Everything is pretty low key in the mornings now as many people have already started shipping out.

Update 2514: Hawty Creek arrived at Presque Isle Downs yesterday afternoon after a seven hour van ride. I had not seen her for a while, but she looked well after her long journey. My other horse also arrived a couple of hours later, which is running on saturday night. I went over to the racing secretary's office to turn in some papers (for the horses running) and saw a huge win picture of Who's Happy displayed on the wall just outside the office. Very cool.

I ran a horse in the fifth race last night for a trainer from Great Lakes Downs. He ran OK, but it would be nice to finish up the meet with another win picture!

Yea!! TGIF!! The end of another week.
Let's end it with a lot of noise to Congress! They MUST listen to the voice of the American people. We'll keep calling until they do.

Prayers to all in need.

Hiya, FsOB! TGIF. Wishing everyone a productive day. Doesn't it seem as though our "Big Train" is gathering steam? Cavel is closed; two more House c-sponsors and Sen. Leahy has committed in the Senate. Kudos to all who are working so hard. Peace, RMH

#### To Leslie in MN: May your Mother have a much better day. Thinking of you and your family.
To Kathy in SC: May Cooper come home this weekend!
To Alex: Please send me an e-mail if you'd like some phone numbers of good people in KY whom you might like to meet. ####

Good morning everyone,

Just to let you know, I have not heard any more from Leslie in MN from last night.

But...OMG! You guys!!! Your posts to her have me in tears.

Thank you sooo much! Leslie's Mom has her Medical Team to help her with her physical wellness but Nancy, Leslie and their family have THE FANS to carry their concern, worry and frustration AND offer buckets (Yes Honey, feed buckets!), of love, compassion and prayers for their mental and spiritual healing!

Yes, the FANS have their back! Thank you sooo much. My God...amazing.

Have a fantastic Friday everyone. If I had the power to bless all of you, I would in a second. Thank you.

I cannot post from work. I will give you an update, if I hear, as soon as I get home. (If Leslie does not get the chance beforehand)

Now, I have to get ready for work. My hair looks like a squirrel's! Bad Hair Day, here I come!

###

And Maribel,

Thank you. You do not need to apologize for being tired at Applebee's. You were, are and always will be beautiful and glowing. Memorable.

Please offer an extra kiss to your Hans from the Fans. And a smile from Barbaro... xxoo

Nancy,

I didn't get to read all the comments yesterday so I don't know what is going on but know that many FOBs are including you in their prayers. Please know that no matter what the issue, you are in my prayers as well.

Blessings to you,

HEllo to my wonderful and precious Famblee,

To just say thank you can hardly describe the feeling of kindness and comfort that you give to myslef and my family. I only have a moment to speak with you this morning. Thank you to Laurie H, my Barbaro sister and friend, for helping me reach out to you yesterday.

We still dont know alot about what has happened or what will lie ahead, but I can tell you this.....

Yesterday about 5 pm there was a very small rain storm here in Mpls and then, the most beautiful RAINBOW came into view. From our hospital window we could see the whole thing. At that moment, I knew that the Famblee and Barbaro were here with us. It just became brighter and brighter until it started to to mulitply and become a double, even a hint of a triple rainbow. In my head, I could see Dee Mirich's writings.."all the colors of the Rainbow to you" It was My sign. Laurie told me to look for the sign and it was there.

In the chaos and upset of the day, I still could feel you all there. Daryl S gave me some good advise yesterday and today I will use it. Today I will bring my Mom her Barbaro Beanie and remind her of his brave fight. I hope she will begin to recognize and remember him.

And I will never forget the warmth and comfort that Barbaro's Famblee has brought to me and to all of us.

Thank you so much,

Leslie in MN

It's Friday - so I wanted to check in since I'm one of the silent ones. Just finished faxing to the senators & reps for today. I did receive a letter this week from one of my Texas senators, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, telling me she would keep my views in mind but no commitment. I'll keep after her. I hope everyone has a great weekend. I'm going to go hug my horse and dogs and pig!!

Dear Ms. Nichols,

Thank you for contacting me about your support for H.R. 503, a bill that would amend the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the shipping, possession, sale, or donation of horses to be slaughtered for human consumption. This bill has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the House Committee on Agriculture.

Please know that I understand your concerns about slaughtering horses for human consumption. However, I believe that until we can establish ways for caring for unwanted horses, a ban on humane slaughter would create more problems than it would fix.

While we may not agree on this issue, I'm sure that there are many other issues on which we do agree. Thanks again for taking the time to get involved. Please don't hesitate to contact me again in the future.

Sincerely,

Zack Space

Member of Congress

He is a Rep from Ohio.

Strategy for Friday September 28

It’s starting to seem like we may have seen the end of horse slaughter on American soil. We’ve all been waiting a long time for this! Hopefully, this will not change.

However, this makes it all the more important that we get the federal legislation passed that will stop the transportation of our horses to Canada and Mexico. It will also erase the possibility of another plant opening up in this country.

Thanks to everyone who rallied to participate in the poll. A very special thank you to CJ who compiled the information. This project is now complete and we will try to give you a synopsis of the results on Monday. This information gathering will help our legislators know how best to proceed. It will also help in compiling Daily Call Lists. You all did an awesome job and now we can concentrate on Daily Calling Lists to encourage those senators that we KNOW we can reach with enough support. Morning all, I am going to Maryland for a 4-5 day vacation with my daughter and her husband. If I have access to a keyboard, I'll be here. If not , all of you and our cause and horses will be in my prayers.

## Leslie in Mn., God bless and keep your Mother.

## Kathy in S.C., I am so happy for Cooper, so happy, I have prayed for him many times this last 2 weeks. I hope he will stay calm and let his leg heal well; bless his doggie heart, he will probably be so excited to get home.
##
Carol Nichols, your congressman needs Indie's
6th grade math paper about our horse population. I don't have it available right now, but I'm sure somebody does. Also I think John Holland has a few papers on the real numbers. I have to go now, but
ask C. J. , (C.Jaffee ) when she comes on here.
##
Renee, I won't be here today to have fun with you,
so maybe Kathy will play repartee with you. I had
such fun yesterday. I would like to enliven this
site a little because it is so solemn, such a
hard subject we deal with daily. But staying within Alex's guidelines and wishes of course.
You are one of my favorites, old fren, so to you I send a big umm-waa ( throwing a kiss with my hand, ala Dinah Shore )

Barbaro Jackson, we're going, with your help, to stop the pro-killers gravy train, so help me God.

Hay, FOB's!

I love all of you. Prayers to everybody...

GREAT NEWS that we have 2 more new cosponsors for HR 503. Thanks Edie for breaking the news. What a wonderful way to start the day!

Extra Friday 9/28 National Target List (HAHS)

You know the drill - don't address this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR Strategy and the instructions of your Group Leader (and if you don't have one, get one, or become one!) - contact our intrepid State Group co-ordinator, Stephanie Breaux sbreaux1@verizon.net

AND use the CURRENT/NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators:

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently [since January], and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and [is now also closed]. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?
Here is today's (Friday 9/28) extra National Target List from HAHS (Humanity Against Horse Slaughter). These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact.

Don't forget to mention S 311, ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the current/new ABR Strategy (posted above), reasons why to support the end of horse slaughter NOW.

Remember what I always say:

Changed Circumstances call for a Fresh Look with an Open Mind.

The closure of Cavel is a BIG changed circumstance.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the ongoing ABR national strategy "...[I]t is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message."

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

800-828-0498

800-459-1887

800-614-2803

Prior HS History: All the Senators on this list voted for the Ensign-Byrd Amendment in 2005; and of these, only Sen. Martnez (FL) cosponsored S 1915 last year.

John Henry Health Update - Friday, Sept 28

John Henry's fans across the country have requested updates on the beloved champion's health.

He is being closely monitored by his veterinarian, and has been treated for dehydration several times this summer, due in large part to the excessive heat and his age.

He is afterall, a very, very old horse who has far exceeded his life expectancy, so we treasure each day a gift.

9:15am: The weather has FINALLY started cooling off, so John Henry was out in his paddock this morning grazing and enjoying the cooler temperatures. He wanted to go for a walk before all of the staff and volunteers arrived, so he couldn't go at that time. However, he will go out later today, if he wants to. He is eating and drinking well, and fussing and carrying-on for treats. He is expecting quite a few fans this weekend who have announced that they will be coming to see him.

He receives guests at his stall during park hours, 9am to 5pm.

Thank you for your interest and concern!

Cheryl,
I'm fine. Every weekend when I go to the farm I feel him around. Is that what you were asking?

Posted by: Renee Antaya at September 28, 2007 10:19 PM

Kathy in SC, am so happy Cooper is coming home. ### will work on Kay Bailey Hutchinson here in Texas. Also Nick Lampson.

Posted by: sandra at September 28, 2007 10:20 PM

Maribel, you said you showed Shepards in the show ring. I showed and raised Labrador Retrievers for many years. Mostly in the eighties. It finally got too expensive to show them so when my last Lab died I started getting rescue dogs. The show ring was a lot of fun. stressful at times as a hot spot or something was always happening a day before a show. My last champion Lab took a group win and I was very proud of her. I then retired us both. ### It looks like we will have another storm tonight and Chief has been sleeping all day. No doubt saving his energy for a full blown anxiety attack. As Felix would say YIKES!

Happy Friday afternoon, fellow Fans!

I have been in a day-long meeting and without computer all day, but I did read about the 2 (Count 'em! .. 2!!!) new cosponsors. Can we get them to go talk to Tom Allen from Maine???

I see Kathy's Cooper is homeward bound. Yay!!! And Leslie's mother, Nancy, is responding to treatment. I believe the Barbaro effect will aid the cure and keep her and her family in my prayers.

And, I would be very remiss if I did not say GO MISS HAWTY!!!!

Proud Fan of Barbaro forever

Just got done calling all The Little Aides. Zowie: but don't a lot of them thar Little Aides take off EARLY on FRIDAY!?

But in general, i love calling later in the day, 'cause it makes me more concise, and I zip right through the info. One Aide said that "we" were a very organized and "galvanized" group of citizens, and they were impressed by our staying power.

I 'll do this all over again next year if i have to, and the 112th too, for that matter. THIS WILL HAPPEN> I promised Gretchen Jackson in my heart that day after they put the big bay one down. The Jackson Team asked so little of us really. We are mighty in numbers, and we will find a way to make Barbaro's legacy as powerful, kind and beautiful as he was.

Hang in there, childrens...we're on a roll now.

####
My bestest hugs and love to all....seems like Fuzzy is the new Lawperson In Equine Heavin...what a little woman she was/is. Long may she live in our memories...

####
Kathy: be ready to sleep down wherever Cooper is sleeping. You may just wind up doing what many of us have done, bought a big ole air mattress and camped out of that for a week or so.

He'll want to go out often...probably--so situate yourself in a room with a door to the outside if possible.

Also: and I know this sounds hard, but you must NOT baby him. The more he moves about unaided--and he should be fully capable of doing this--the faster he'll heal..swelling in the opp. leg will dissipate faster, bruising will dissipate faster..
Just try to "jolly" him along, and try not to use a sad or sympathetic voice...he needs you to be strong now. And I know you can do it...

Here's where you'll want to check back in with the Circle of Grey. Collectively we have more tricks and tips than I could ever write down for you....and one day, you'll be adding tips of your own...

Lots of praise for the boy...and he'll come along fine. One more thing. Do not use a pain patch, but something like Rimadyl, Derramaxx or my favorite, Metacam. Stay on top of the pain relief, and you'll be half way to recovery...it'll be a couple of weeks of craziness anyway...

Best: jonna (You have my email addy, use it any time you wish.)

Poor Hawty, in the money but still a maiden. Maybe next time, girl?

Posted by: TerriC at September 28, 2007 10:57 PM

### Equine Heaven...you rock! Thank you keeping me updated on my little Fuzzy girl. I am so glad she fits in...I know she is having a blast. Tears again. It was hard to sleep without her last night. She always ended up on my shoulder, in the crook of my arm, or on my head. (((Fuzz))) Mommy and daddy miss you so...your food and water are still out. Sigh.
The vet thinks since she did not appear to move at all, she probably had an aneurism.

COOPER is home! He does very well on three legs. It is the plastic lampshade on his head giving him fits. He make no adjustments for it at all and runs into everything. I can't try Jonna's towel trick yet. Both legs on the right side are bandaged due to "crate sores". I think he is stuck with the lampshade for a week or so. He is confined to my room. He bled a little after the second potty run. I am to expect that they say. Just as long as it is just a little bit.

(((FAMBLEE))) Thank for for all the prayers for Cooper, and condolences for my Fuzzy little baby. I truly appreciate you all.

I hope everyone has a wonderful, safe, happy weekend.

Kathy and COOPER

Sandra and Maribel, I breed and show golden retrievers and have had over 70 Champions since the 70's. You are right that it is always something with those guys. However, there is nothing like having a "dynamite" puppy to come out with to blow them all away, huh? I am going to 2 Matches this weekend with my new 5 month old, "Cole." We'll see how it goes. Maribel, I have prayed for you and Hans, glad he is better. FOB's, have a great weekend, safe trips to all horses and jockeys. Bobby, I miss you every day. Alex, thanks for all you do.

Kathy - haven't got a chance to read posts, hope Cooper came home today.

Great news about the new co-sponsors. Gale Vernon Buchanan is a new rep this year in Florida and when we first called his office months ago about HR503, the aides said they never heard of the bill and had no idea about horse slaughter. Through months of educating them thru calling and faxing, our Florida group was thrilled to see him co-sponsor today. And I just want to say I am so proud of our Florida group, they are not only dedicated, as this is the 3rd co-sponsor they have got, but wonderful, caring people. Many of them are going to Beauty Haven Rescue in Ocala tomorrow to build a much needed fence.

Safe travels to all the horses running tonight and tomorrow. Good luck to Hawty Creek, you go girl!

Hi All: Thanks for all the prayers and wellwishes. Keep them coming. I'm still so nervous about tomorrow. I just can't believe it. Coby can really do this. I hope. One of the guys in The Daily Racing Form has him as his pick. Remember everyone, he's in the 9th race at the Meadowlands on September 29th. Keep those good vibes for him going and maybe he'll be able to pull this off.

##Nancy: I don't know how to send pictures, but you can see most of them on the website. JustaWalkinthePark is on the opening page. Your friend Coby is on the introduction page and Ambling Rose is where it has the FLS horses. Bellagio, GlideNSeek and Razzle Dazzle aren't on the website. The website address is www.fantasylanestable.com.

Remember everyone, keep those good thoughts and prayers for Coby(Cobrastrike) that he has a safe trip tomorrow and hopefully make a good showing for himself.

Thanks

Hiya, FsOB! Great positive energy here on the Big Board today, yippee! As I said this AM, it feels like our "Big Train" is gathering steam; Cavel is closed and all the efforts of so many of the folks here and the "silent ones" (to use Kate's term) are helping add co-sponsors to HR-503 and S-311.
I wish Alex safe travels to KY on Sunday. Shall you be heading to Keeneland? Can you give the grand old man John Henry a chocolate doughnut on behalf of the FsOB if you visit the KY Horse Park, Alex?
Here's to a great weekend for all citizens of The Barbaro Nation, worldwide! Peace, RMH

#### To Leslie in MN: Please take Nancy her Barbaro Beanie and keep talking to her, even if she is semiconscious or even unconscious. When I was a student nurse in Louisville, I cared for a teenage girl who was unconscious and had been for weeks. I would talk non-stop to her when bathing her, play her favourite soap opera on the TV, and explain what I was seeing. She regained consciousness after I graduated. I went back to see her when I was orienting in the NICU. She got very excited, said she knew me (even though she had never actually seen me!), and thanked me for talking to her when she couldn't respond. She remembered my voice and Nancy certainly will love hearing yours, Leslie.
To Kathy in SC: I am thrilled for you, your family, and for Cooper. I'm crying just thinking how happy he must've been to get back home.
To Bobbie B: Enjoy your trip to Maryland. Will you visit the Fair Hill Farm?
To Lyn G: Have a great time at the yoga retreat.
To Sandra: I sure hope that the storm does not visit your town. Or if it must, may it come when you are not asleep. Poor Chief, it must be so scary for him to deal with storms.
To Lorraine in Staten Island: Wishing you and Coby all the best at the Meadowlands tomorrow!
To Laurie H: How did Mr. Bart finish his "work week"? Is he still scavenging those Cheerios? What a sight that must be! ####

To my precious Cobra Strike...just remember that somebody in CT has a BIG crush on you - even if you bring up the rear in your race! Do your best, sweet boy, but most of all BE SAFE!

Just saw a report from my Virtual Stable: SNIFTERS SPIRIT (one of our beloved), came in 6th in a $15,000 Claiming race at Retma Park today, Race 7.

Pray that God will continue to keep him safe, and that he is in good hands, Yes?

Posted by: Otherlyn at September 29, 2007 2:31 AM

Thank you all and Thank you Nancy. I'll have to tell Coby that he has a friend in Connecticut. Maybe I'll have him dedicate the race to you. I am just so nervous about tomorrow. I know what he's capable of; I just hope he has a good safe race and makes it respectable. Like I've said in the past though, win or lose I love him with all my heart and I am so proud of him for making it this far.
###
I also have a favor to ask everyone. This has nothing to do with horses or animals. One of my partners has a friend who is a country singer. Her name is Danielle Peck and she currently has a song on the charts called Bad for me. She is #9 this week on GAC and was #10 on CMT Pure Country. She hasn't yet ranked on the CMT charts. Anyway, we are trying to get her to #1 on both charts and hopefully ranking on the CMT charts. If anyone could help by putting in votes for her I would appreciate it.

Thanks again for everything. You are just such wonderful people and I am so glad I found you.

Jane, I think Golden Retrievers are beautiful dogs. When I watch Westminister I usually think they are the most beautiful dogs there. Showing was fun and one of the biggest thrills was my champion, Belle, winning the sporting group. Labs hardly ever win as they dont have flash. I bred Belle and had ten of the pups "pre-ordered" and 9 of the people reserved a female. Guess what? Nine males and one female. well, thats the dog world. By the way the people took the males and I kept the female.

Posted by: sandra at September 29, 2007 2:34 AM

Sandra, That was great that your Lab won the Sporting Group......I have been there a few times, takes your breath away My biggest thrill was winning Best Puppy In Sweeps at the National Specialty over 300 puppies....Now I am going through a very hard time as the last 3 girls I have bred have not gotten pregnant and all of the puppies have been spoken for for 6 months. This is my only job, so I am facing a very hard struggle to survive at the moment and hoping that things will turn around as this is what I have done for 35 years. Sometimes it gets you down for sure.

Kathy, Cooper and Family

Bud (our Black Lab) really does not like those lamp shade things either. I hope Cooper can enjoy having it off as soon as possible. Your Fuzzy is up with our Misty and so many wonderful other beloved famblee members. May the strength to go hour to hour, day to day and week to week keep moving all of us along.

All our best and warm wishes to you and yours.
