Barbaro Updates: 396

updates are now here.

Update 2513: Off back to Presque Isle Downs to welcome a special guest ... Hawty Creek. I also have another shipping in a little later this afternoon, so I need to set up a couple of stalls.

This weekend's racing also includes the return of Lava Man, who is taking on Tiago and others in the Goodwood: Lava Man 'Fantastic' for Goodwood Return.

Update 2512: Some great racing to look forward to this weekend: Schedule keeps Curlin fresh for Classic, excerpt:

Curlin will face Lawyer Ron, the nation's best older horse, in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. The winner of that race, which will be seen live on ESPN, gets an automatic berth to the Classic through the Breeders' Cup's "Win and You're In" program.

Another automatic berth to the Classic will go to the winner of the Grade 1, $500,000 Goodwood Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting, where Tiago - the winner of the Santa Anita Derby and Swaps Stakes - will take on older horses for the first time.

But the race that rivals the Jockey Club Gold Cup for interest is the Grade 2, $350,000 Kentucky Cup Classic on Saturday at Turfway Park, where Street Sense and Hard Spun - the first two finishers in the Kentucky Derby - will square off.

Update 2511: Things continue to slow down a little in the mornings at Presque Isle Downs. I had two to get ready to ship out. Tiger Supreme, who had been here for a little while, and Real Lace. Once they were loaded on the van, along with all their "trappings", I had one to ride for a Great Lakes Downs trainer. I stripped a stall and then left. Two horses are shipping in this afternoon, one being Hawty Creek, so will be back later to get ready for them.

After leaving the track I went to get my truck serviced, I will be heading to Kentucky on Sunday.

Update 2510: Not such a successful night last night at Presque Isle Downs, but that's racing! Real Lace finished sixth. She was well placed down the backside and to the quarter pole, but did not fire down the lane. She seemed to cool out well, she drank a bucket and a half of water which is about normal. I ran another horse earlier on the card and she also did not run particularly well and others I was interested in also seemed to take the night off! Oh well, lets hope Hawty Creek gets us back to winning tomorrow night! She is shipping in today with her owner / trainer, Dave.

I was planning on leaving on saturday, but got a call from another Fair Hill trainer who is shipping a horse up to run in the first race on saturday night. I will run that horse and leave first thing sunday morning.

Santa Anita opened its meet on Wednesday with its new synthetic surface, the Cushion track: Cushion Track Gets Thumbs-Up at Opening of Oak Tree Meet, excerpt:

"The horses' attitude is happier," said Spawr. "They've stopped jarring (as on a dirt surface). It's not hard; it's not giving way. It has a bounce."

Said Sherwood Chillingworth, Oak Tree's executive vice president: "Artificial tracks in general are a proven commodity... all the stalls at Hollywood Park are filled, all our stalls are filled, everything over at Fairplex is filled. It's because very few horses had injuries at Del Mar."

Ron Charles, president of the Los Angeles Turf Club at Santa Anita, said, "One of the things that we're probably most pleased about is the fact that we've not seen the variation from the morning. Today it was 90 degrees, and the horses were traveling over it very similarly to what they were at 5:30 in the morning. And that's what we're looking for."

Good Thursday morning FOBs

Well we're heading toward week's end, so let's keep making noise to Congress.

I didn't get to read any posts last night so I'm not up on the latest, although I believe Maribel gave a glowing prognosis for Hans. Wonderful news!

To all who have been praying for Den - my deep gratitude. I suspect we're not going to know anything for awhile - he still has some tests lined up over the next few weeks but right now he seems stable. No explanation about what happened.

Have a wonderful day!!

Good morning FOB's. Today is the one year anniversary of the slaughter bound horses in the I-44 accident. The FOB have been supporting the efforts of Longmeadow Ranch as they care for these horses. Many are up for adoption. We have a special fundraising going on for them.
The Humane Society of Missouri has sent an email to acknowledge this date. Please check the discussion board for more information. Thank you.

MORNING POST, SHELLEYA, DEBRA, WI

Strategy for Thursday September 27

It's starting to seem like we may have seen the end of horse slaughter on American soil. We've all been waiting a long time for this! Hopefully, this will not change.

However, these developments make it all the more important that we get the federal legislation passed that will stop the transportation of our horses to Canada and Mexico. It will also erase the possibility of another plant opening up in this country.

Thanks to everyone who rallied to participate in the poll. This information gathering will help our legislators know how best to proceed. It will also help in compiling Daily Call Lists. Since many senators were receiving duplicate calls, this project will be completed by the state leaders. You all did an awesome job and now we can concentrate on Daily Calling Lists to encourage those senators that we KNOW we can reach with enough support. Remember, we don't need them all, so let's get back to our regular calls and get enough senators to get this passed!!

CJ was kind enough to volunteer to tally the polling information. For those of you who still have information to report, please email her at potlucky@sbcglobal.net. Make sure to put SENATE TALLY in the subject line

Remember: WE ARE BARBARO'S VOICE, LET IT BE HEARD!

Hello fellow animal lovers. This is really easy and helps animals in
need. Please pass this information on! The Animal Rescue Site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota
of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

You can even set it to send you an automatic email alert daily so you remember to click every day.

Click to Feed the Animals - Rescue Site

Again, please tell your friends and cross post!!!

Dear Barbaro,
A little cat crossed the bridge during the night. Did you see her? She is a long haired white and black cat, with the fullest tail you have ever seen. Her name is Fuzzy, and she is the softest and most cuddly thing there ever was. A year ago June when I picked her up off the barn floor, the vet said she was 4 or 5 weeks old. Her mother had abandoned her. Both eyes were shut with infection, and she could barely walk, she was more flea than cat. She went to work with me daily, she went everywhere I went, and she was bottle fed until she learned to lap her formula. She ended up being blind in one eye, but she was so beautiful. I told her that every day. And I love her, I told her that too. When my alarm went off this morning, I wondered why she was not snuggled on my shoulder or in the crook of my arm. I turned on the light, and she was curled up on my robe, little paws crossed in front of her. She had passed during the night, apparently in her sleep.
Fuzzy is buried at the farm. Her dad and I were there, as well as 3 of the horses, and one of the dogs. She is resting under a tree, with morning glories all around her. It is a peaceful spot.
Barbaro, could you find her a safe spot in hevvin? Thank you big guy. I love you.

Thanks Alex.

John Henry Health Update - Thursday, September 26

John Henry's fans across the country have requested updates on the beloved champion's health.

He is being closely monitored by his veterinarian, and has been treated for dehydration several times this summer, due in large part to the excessive heat and his age.

He is afterall, a very, very old horse who has far exceeded his life expectancy, so we treasure each day a gift.

As of 8:40am, John Henry is pinning his ears and swinging his skinny-but-still-mighty-powerful rear end toward one of his caretakers, Robin (this just means that he is feeling like the John Henry we all know and love). He is getting a little bit spoiled by all of the treats his fans are bringing him and becoming rather demanding. Appetite is great.

He receives guests at his stall during park hours, 9am to 5pm.

Thank you for your interest and concern!

Kathy
I have only ever had one animal pass in their sleep. It was a 13 year old brood bitch named Lillie. She gave out one little yelp. I had her necropsied: she had a hemangisarcoma IN her heart wall...so when that finally punched through and she bled out into her pericardium, there must have been a little pain.
She bit her tongue...

I raced over to her. And she was so alive still...it was such a shock. But that's how Lillie was: everything on her own terms...no needles and SleepAway for that old girl.

Interesting;ly, my other brood at the time, Rosie, lay next to Lillie until we were ready to take her down to the Vets for the necropsy/cremation. I have never see a dog do this. It was so moving. Rosie would NOT leave her.

So my blessing on Fuzzy. I am sure that Equine Heavin already has her working on some project with Felix, and we will all read of her Heavinly exploits soon...

Hang in there. You did so well by that little kitty. Smart girl, she knew who to pick...

Good Morning Alex:

If you get to Kentucky Horse Park, please try to find out what has happened with John Henry's trophies. Be sure to try to Kentucky cuisine if you haven't already done so -- Kentucky Browns and some deep fried pickels -- so good so fattening.

Kathy, I wish I had some kind of sweet healing
balm to sprinkle over you and ease your pain. We don't get by that easily on this earth , do we?, but I pray for you and am so sorry for your loss.

Morning everyone and Barbaro in heaven. Lead on and we will follow. And Barbaro-- it's getting vital now, the rubber is hitting the road ! Congress will adjourn before we know it.
Barbaro, we must get through to them what is happening to our horses.

The special interests , who have kept hs going in the face of and against the will of the majority,
have no intention of stopping.
They keep gatekeepers in place in most committees, who can bottle up any legislation.

They are riding this gravy-train and refuse to stop, or even slow down.
We must dis-rail them, because this train is fueled by our horses lives.

The name of their train is Money .It's the Money Special, runs to Mexico and Canada daily.
It's a powerful monster with a lot of support
behind it.
Picture Senators and Reps. running along side
catching greenbacks floating off the train as it chugs by. Millions of horses chained to it, pulling and pulling until their lives end, then being replaced by others.

Those riding the train are getting a free ride , but this is America. We don't give free rides normally-- we were built on a work ethic.

Let's put our work ethic to work. Stop this train.

Hi Renee:

Recipes vary a bit but Kentucky Browns are an open faced sandwich on toasted bread with turkey and/or ham, tomatoes, bacon and covered in a cheese sauce. After hearing about them on a tour I tried one at D'Shae's in Lexington. It was great! My roots are in MI and NY so the more knowledgeable KY crowd may beg to differ but I loved all the great food we tried in KY. Those deep fried pickles at Billy B's Barbeque -- oh so good. They give you so much food there we had to crawl out we were so stuffed!

Is it the momentum of the Cavhell decision
affecting the aides?
Or is it affecting me?
Is anyone else noticing a slight change of demeanor by the aides? Being nicer and taking more time? Maybe I'm being nicer too? Are you?

Our dear FOB Lj is in need of help. She didn’t want me to post this at first; I had to talk her into it.

As you all know she does beautiful work on her computer and builds & hosts several sites. For those of you who do not know here by name she posts as jock4hire and is a wonderful friend to the FOB & horses.

Well she is now without a computer to work on. She needs a new one and with all that she does I’m afraid a simple home computer won’t do.

I have posted the link to the computer so you can see for yourself what it is she would like to have.

Can we make this happen for her? She does so much for the horses and was in the middle of an important project to help the horses when her computer died. She tried everything to fix it, baby it and save it, but it just didn’t work.

I have contacted Gateway and I have the total that includes shipping & tax. The total is $ 1683.66. I know that sounds like a lot, but she requires a computer with the capabilities to handle all that she does and this one will fit the bill perfectly for her.

Payment was also discussed with Gateway. I originally was going to say send me a check for whatever amount and make it out to Gateway. But, after talking with them, they said they could not do it that way. I do not have a pay pal account, so the only option seems to be to have the checks made out to me and then I will open an account and put the money in that account until we have all the money raised. That is all I know to do.

Anyone who wants to donate to help get Lj get a computer, email me with the amount you are going to send, so I can keep track and give updates and I will email you my address to send the check to.

Lj is very grateful, as am I to anyone who can help. She is a long time and loyal FOB and we really need to help her out.

Lj, does have a surprise for anyone who donates, but I am not allowed to tell...LOL

Thank you all so much for any help you can give.

Love,

Verna

Web page for the computer: http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529666090.php

NEWS PHLASH - NEW COSPONSOR IN THE SENATE!!!

Just as I was preparing to get the HAHS list ready for posting today, I got a call from DC, one of the S 311 aides I had specifically asked to call me back with info for our informal poll.

Not only is Sen. Leahy of VT a definite "YES" in support of a slaughter/export ban; HE IS SIGNING ON AS COSPONSOR of S 311 and I was given permission to publicly so state. GOOSEBUMPS NONSTOP!

Anyway we talked at length (Adrienne his aide is an avid horse person) and I got deflected from my other mission.

Will have something up soon (at least puter is behaving so far this morning) and you have my permission to release this news anywhere and everywhere.

It is "official" though the paperwork has not quite gone in yet - but believe me, it will.

tty very soon - love - CJ in Hammond IN

## Renee, ouch , that hit me right in the eye and I'm rtying ot tpye.

How do you stop a train?
Lay something in front of it on the track...
(Illinois law and Texas law.)
It can soon go around... (transport.)

But take away its fuel...(horses)
and it has no reason to go on!
Throw 311 and 503 on it
and watch a miracle as
the train begins to disappear

Leaving a land of safety and green

Extra Thursday 9/27 Nat'l Target List (HAHS)

As I always caveat - please follow today's ABR Strategy and your group leader's instructions BEFORE attacking this list.

AND use the NEW Talking Points from ABR Strategy when contacting this extra HAHS list as well as when contacting the ABR daily lists of Senators:

1. Let [the legislators] know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently, and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and will be closed shortly. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispel the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. The more I see..... the less I understand. This dog was a police officer. I just received this email from In Defense of Animals:

SUPPORT SHERIFF FOR ARRESTING OFFICER IN POLICE DOG'S DEATH

Animal-friendly Arizona lawman catches flak from colleagues - needs "backup" for doing the right thing
In July 2007, IDA named Sheriff Joe Arpaio, head of the Maricopa County Sheriff's office, our Guardian of the Month for his efforts to hold animal abusers accountable for their crimes. Now the nationally-renowned lawman needs our help, as he has come under fire from the Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police (AACOP) and some police unions for arresting a Chandler law enforcement officer in the death of his K-9 partner.

The furor started when Arpaio booked Sergeant Thomas Lovejoy on animal abuse charges after the officer left Bandit, a five-year-old Belgian Malinois, in his police cruiser from 9:00 a.m. until after 10:00 p.m. on August 11th. With temperatures reaching a high of 109 degrees that day, Bandit died painfully from heat prostration while Lovejoy ran errands, took a nap, and dined at a restaurant with his wife.

Upon finding Bandit dead in the back seat, Lovejoy called his commanding officer, who came and removed the dog's corpse from the car and immediately had it cremated. If Lovejoy were not a law enforcement officer, police would have followed their official procedure of preserving the dog's body as evidence in the case pending an investigation. The Chandler Police Department did not notify the Maricopa County Sheriff's office of Bandit's death until three days after it happened.

The Chandler Police Department publicly announced that there would be no criminal investigation of Bandit's death, but only an internal investigation. Dissatisfied with this course of action, Sheriff Arpaio ordered a full investigation that took two weeks and entailed interviewing Chandler Police officials and veterinarians, creating a timeline of events, and verifying witnesses' statements. In deference to the distress of Sergeant Lovejoy and his family over the situation, Arpaio did make special arrangements in the arrest procedure to make his appearance before a judge at the jail as short as possible (it was done in less than an hour) and to minimize the defendant's exposure to the media.

In response, AACOP sent Sheriff Arpaio a letter of "resolution" accusing him of overreacting to the situation; but the fact is he was just doing his job and showing strong leadership while sending a powerful message that animal abuse will not be tolerated -- no matter who the perpetrator is.

1) Let Sheriff Arpaio know that you support his decision to book Sergeant Lovejoy on misdemeanor charges (which could cost him up to six months in jail and/or a $2,500 fine), just like he would any other citizen who was responsible for an animal companion's death.

AMAZING GRACE.--

-reflections come in hard spun, swirling clouds
over head
'the sun has set and the moon is luminous
upon my face strewn with tears'
i cant forget---

sometimes it feels like yesterday
and sometimes it feels like 100 years ago

we were ordering your carrots and apples and green mints
and plotting how to lift your doctor;s heart and owners soul
from the heavy battle they fought along side
with you

they walked with you
so much invisible love
grew everywhere i looked
manifested
into a whole way of being

'there is before Barbaro

who were you then
and then

there is after Barbaro
]who are you now

where is my path?

well i ask myself these questions'

his four hoover pounded on the dirt track
in such a way
that i held my breath to see the force and weight of that power
his joy to run

the glistening muscles ,fluid poetry
oh yes-- the look in his eye
that of the eagle
well that is forever burned inside
that the

AMAZING GRACE

the plasma, pulse of him
came to this time
to these people ..to us and them and all over the fields..
a truth of gold and glory we had not seen
in such a long time
maybe a lifetime

how so many worked through their deep grief
''the power of nature

THE 25 HORSES WHO WERE SAVED FROM THE TWISTED BONES AND MUSCLES
RIPPED INTO SHREDS
DEEP CUTS,CONTUSIONS
AND 16 HORSES DEAD
GONE IN SUCH PANIC AND FEAR THEY CARRIED
INTO THE NIGHT;S WIND

THE TRUCK ON IT S WAY TO SLAUGHTER

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD
OF SUCH A TORTUOUS ROUTE
FOR ANY LIVING CREATURE?

IT IS ABSOLUTELY BEYOND MY IMAGINATION
THE YEARS OF QUIET AGONIZING
SUFFERING
HEARDING OF HORSES INTO FILTHY TRUCKS
JAMMED WIHT TERRIFIED SOULS
..OF COURSE THE TRUCK WOULD ROLL
CRASHING OVER

THE MISSOURI HUMANE SOCIETY
STEPPED IN
AND THE UNDERLYING
compassion for the horses on their way
to their terrible deaths--how they all rallied
is such an example of deep good humane kindness
which i starve for all the time

SOME KIND OF DIVINE INTERVENTION
PULLED THEM OFF THE ROAD TO THERE

THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE
AND SPEAK
FOR BARBARO'S NATION'
TO SERVE
TO REACH OUT
TO KINDLE
TO NOT BE INDIFFERENT
TO SEE THESE HORSES
GLOWING IN NEW FOUND PEACE AND JOY FOREVER HOMES
TO KNOW KINDNESS AND GOOD CLEAN FOOD SERVD IN LOVE AND GENTLENESS
TO BE BRUSHED AND GROOMED
THESE FOLKS ARE WHaT HUMANE BEINGS CAN ASPIRE TO
SURELY not lord of the flies

THE FANS OF BARBARO HAVE RESCUED

THEORY GAINS MEANING
in the field//
these beautiful FARMS of gold

where so many have flowered and grown some kind of gardens
in their hearts
that is peace in action, i say

i feel such sorrow
to have lost Barbaro in the physical sense ..gone like the wind is
right
it is the worst ending to a story that i have just about ever lived
through
it is the worst and
i keep replaying the end in total disbelief
to this day

HOWEVER,

it is that too
that leads me to the gold prize

..he leaves me with that love
and that love continues no matter what
never
ends
and that the form changes too

it is my job to retain his magnificence and incorporate him
into my life
that is how he stays alive in me
in others, perhaps
the most beautiful essence
in all my cells
our cells

we all become Barbaro
forever
amen

to live courageously
like he did
in leaivng and letting go
an that
nicanor and little B
and all horses
have something really special to offer
..not one is
not good..

but i also feel
such joy
that i can feel
then feel
the awe of his being
'that he touched my life
and yours
and you know
we will march before the starry nights and dazzling rivers

so many of you have argued and written and called on their--the
horses- behalf -
-barbaro's nation
..
for once to act in things that matter
like fresh air to breath, water to drink and space to roam and run
to speak for creatures
that have no voice
cramped into pens and vans
and cans
food deprived
beaten and maimed

who ever heard of such a civilization
like this?

the folks who went down to that highway
in the dark and in the light
extracted the muscle
from the steel and put themselves out

like those who stood by cavel day and night while t screams of fear
and pain filled the sky
they did not leave
no angela did not leave but bore witness
to the horror all the time
but instead cast prayers
so no horse would die UNKNOWN

that is some kind of courage

i am thanking everyone
for standing tall
..embracing what is different
and even painful and ugly

'to lay the way for Barbaro;s return
in some shape or form

will i be worthy of this

amazing grace--

will i be indifferent
to that horse
that comes in last and looks more clumsy then sleek

how about the one hobbling in the corner pen
skinny and mournful to have been discarded

on september 27th
the one year anniversary
of that terrible accident on highway 1-44
our and four is eight
'the royal eight

his mantel so very clear
star crusted and be jeweld

i hear him so clearly

'may i stretch all the way up
to touch his nose
may i live
as he lived
'in full blossomed courage
wisdom and joy for every little thing
..
so very intelligent
trusting the hands that led him through and through

so Barbaro

i embrace the flow of where ever your ashes .flow
.into the winds, the grass
the deep earth
you will come home.
may we collect ourselves
by the underground streams
flowing through continents above and below

we surround you in a circle
of millions
of lights
fractions and diamonds
from our hearts
may 'we circle you
with garlands
from the deep plush
velvet of our memories
of which are now a part
of the great big sky

in the light
of this miracle
of it all
in the light
of this gold
the blue and the green
this love

Thank you Martita for the beautiful poem honoring the MO Horses on the first anniversary of their accident. Your poem, in honoring them, honors all the horses needing rescue and horse rescues who daily persevere against all odds to find homes for these unwanted animals and care for them with love and compassion.

There is a thread on the Discussion Board for reflection on the I-44 accident and a place to share your feelings on this one year mark. Please share what these horses mean to you one year later.

God bless you Martita and all who give their hearts to horses in need everywhere.

Good afternoon, fellow Fans! The Equine Heaven crew has been making their presence know here in Maine with the thunder since last night...pretty rowdy last night and less so today...must be just breezing this morning tho' I haven't checked Felix's report yet.

I am off work today and one of my errands was to hand-deliver some anti-slaughter messages to my Senators local offices in Augusta. The security guards looked at my clear plastic ziplock bags of information and quickly identified themselves as owners of a rescue about 40 miles away! Ah, the Barbaro effect! I hope to add them to my calling group.

CJ - I'm thrilled to see that Senaor Leahy of VT is going to cosponsor! That state as well as New York, New Hampshire and Maine all provide Interstate pipelines to the slaughterhouses in Quebec.

### Equine Hevvin...thank you sooo much for welcoming my little Fuzzy girl. I really appreciate you doing that. I am a rational human being, but seeing her name on the list is very comforting. Thank you.

((( FAMBLEE ))) Thank you for the support today. Fuzzy was my little princess, and it was such a shock. She wasn't a year and a half old. No signs, no symptoms, nothing. Just went to sleep and never woke up. She looked peaceful, and that is making it better. She did not suffer.

COOPER UPDATE...if Cooper passes his exam in the morning, he will get to come home. He has been there for two weeks, so this would be good. I will let you know.

Love to all, and thank you.

well, we had a storm here last night. thunder, lightening, heavy rain and wind 65MPH. As usual Chief went into his anxiety panic (he is a 86 pound shepard big baby). I was using his anxiety drops and teanquilizers and any thing else I could find for him. If it thunders 60 miles away he goes nuts. I had finally got him settled down some by letting him glue himself to my body when I guess wind in the attic blew the attic cover off and it was a very Loud noise when it hit the garage floor. I thought for a minute we had been hit by lightning and Chief went beserk. Finally the storm passed. Another storm is predicted tonight. I surely hope it hits before bedtime. If in the middle of the night he whacks me with his lethal paws like "Get up we are going to be killed". Bless his heart . He is 12 and gets worse with age. Thats okay as I love him to pieces.

I know it's not funny at the time.

A year later do you believe this?

Tractor Trailer Loaded with 62 Cattle Crashes on Poplar Street Bridge in Downtown St. Louis

A tractor trailer loaded with 62 yearling bulls
crashed on the Poplar Street Bridge ramp
from Illinois to westbound Interstate 70.

A bull being freed from the wreckage.
The Humane Society of Missouri’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch and the Missouri Emergency Response Service rescue cattle caught in double-decker trailer accident.

Early this morning, a tractor trailer loaded with 62 yearling bulls crashed on the Poplar Street Bridge ramp from Illinois to westbound Interstate 70. The truck was headed to Axton, Colorado when the load shifted on the sharp curve of the ramp and the trailer overturned ending up balanced precariously over the rail.

The rescue team from the Humane Society of Missouri and the Missouri Emergency Response Service (MERS) arrived on the scene around 1:30 a.m. More than a dozen loose bulls were rounded up and loaded on rescue trailers. The team then secured gaping openings in the trailer caused by the wreck so that the trailer could be righted without additional cattle escaping. Forty-five bulls survived. All, except one, were transported to a temporary holding area. As of late morning, one bull remains at large. The survivors, now property of the transporter’s insurance company, will be taken to a holding facility in Illinois.

In a bizarre and very sad coincidence, today is the one-year anniversary of the horrific wreck of a double deck trailer carrying 42 horses on Interstate 44 in Franklin County, Missouri. Rescuers from the Humane Society of Missouri’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch and MERS also led this team. Twenty-five horses and one hinny survived that accident. With excellent veterinary care from several area equine veterinary hospitals and constant attention from Longmeadow staff, today seven of those survivors are in new, adopter homes and 13 additional horses are available for adoption.

The Humane Society of Missouri and its Longmeadow Rescue Ranch have been designated as first responders in emergencies and disasters involving animals. Staff and volunteers receive monthly training to prepare for emergencies such as these. The quick and professional actions of the rescue team in both incidents directly contributed to the survival of many of these animals.

Renee,
Yes, still in trenchcoat and sunglasses. The trenchcoat is a little tattered after a long year of constant wear, but I won't be retiring it until the transport of our horses to Mexico and Canada is made illegal.

New out of Texas

Lawmaker to AG: Is it legal to transport horse meat?

01:03 AM CDT on Thursday, September 27, 2007
From Staff Reports

AUSTIN – A state lawmaker is asking the attorney general whether horse meat intended for human consumption can be stored in and transported across Texas without it being taxed.

A federal appeals court already has upheld a state ban on horse slaughter, which shut down two horse rendering plants – one in Kaufman and the other in Fort Worth.

In his letter to the attorney general, Rep. Warren Chisum, R-Pampa, argues that the horse meat's "physical presence in Texas would be merely temporary for the sole purpose of export ... thus, the foreign horse meat would never be legally present in Texas for the purpose of taxation or customs duties." Mr. Chisum is chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.

Jill Buckley, senior director of legislative services for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, says the law is clear cut.

"We are opposed to all horse slaughter in the first place," Ms. Buckley said. "We would not be pleased with the transport of any horse part for human consumption anywhere."

The attorney general usually takes several months to weigh legal questions and issue an opinion.

Why does it not say the horses were on there way to slaughter???? They missed the REAL STORY !!!!!

I'll tell you WHY....because SLAUGHTER is a DIRTY WORD and because it's so DISGUSTING and INHUMANE and basically the fact it still exists in any way shape or form is an insult to humanity!!

HOW SAD they missed their chance for a real feel-good warm fuzzy feeling story that people could really relate to....SAD SAD SAD!!!!!!

What part of NO does Texas Rep. Chisum not understand???
I know if you got elected Mr. Chisum you surely know how to read????

FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION!!!!!

I don't want to start a fight on the board here, but I think we need to be careful who we decide to support in a controversial issue such as the Lovejoy case. I have been in contact PERSONALLY with Carolyn Lovejoy. Her family has suffered TREMENDOUSLY throughout this whole ordeal and she and even her children have received death threats over the issue.

I think we need to stay out of it, and let the powers that be, law enforcement handle the situation.

There is a HUGE split here in Arizona, people have now decided to take sides. The sad situation is that Bandit lost his life. I don't think the family needs any more sadness at this time.

Please, just stay out of the situation. As I stated, I have been in contact with Carolyn herself, and I'm not even sure I have the whole story.

Let's be really careful about this one.

Some nights when i get done with the calls, i just want to get in my van, go for a ride to a Thruway rest stop and just scream my fool head off.
Pounding on the steering wheel might help too.

I am forever disillusioned with our elected officials. I am forever disillusioned with the electoral process. I am forever disillusioned with that fact that pols running for higher office next year must spend 90% of their time OUT of their DC offices, eating Chicken a la King, making inane speeches, shaking hands ad nauseum, and and in general, sucking up to potential investors to the max.

How does this give them the freedom to act once they are actually elected? How can they actually operate on what their conscience tells them>

The answer of course is that once elected by their powerful backers, they do not have the freedom our founding fathers intended to act on the wishes of their hearts and their constituents.

AH, the constituents. Maybe we should be aiming at them. Like a laser. Because, my dearest FOBs, the more the American Public knows about horse slaughter, they more angry they will become, the more disgusted, the more they will turn their anger and contempt towards their elected officials and they may begin to say things like, VOTE THIS BILL INTO LAW AND PROTECT OUR HORSES, OR YOU'RE OUT OF OFFICE.

(I love all the outrage American express at revelations that Koreans and many other Asian countries raise dogs to be meals. The Koreans, BTW, feel that the more terror inflicted on the dog before it is killed, the more TENDER the meat will be....)

Someone explain to me how this outrage doesn't translate to horse slaughter...I think we need to get some mighty wealthy backers, well-known directors like ridley scott, baz lehrmann and maybe even the spielberg himself. and celebrety spokespeople, and create PSAs that we will run the hell out of and create a furor over the apparent inability of our elected officials to act on behalf of the American horse.

We know what's going on. God knows, John Holland knows, Angela V. knows. but the whole country HAS TO KNOW. And we have to get it stopped.

Part of this also rests on the heads of people who overbreed horses. The AQHA MUST look hard at what they're doing. PMU foals: Premarin has to die, ok?

There are too many horses--just as there are too many racing greyhounds, and they're ALL fodder for the killers. At least the GH aren't eaten....

Oh, maybe it's this rainy afternoon, this constant headache, blah blah. I think what it really is: I see the writing on the wall, and I'm not alone. We'll be calling the 111th Congress next year. And maybe the 112th.

We need to get tougher, angrier, more inventive in
the sources to which we go for help...
Maybe a consortium of racing's greats, like the Jacksons, the Hancocks...maybe we can craft a campaign that will aim the terrors of slaughter right at the heart of the American public.

I just feel, in MY heart. That until we throw some big media at this issue, we'll still be calling and calling and calling....

Love you my dears...but I think we have to get better at this, and fast.

Posted by: jonnagrey at September 27, 2007 10:24 PM

### Barb - We will have to agree to disagree on this one. Bandit is the one that suffered - and unless the story as presented is lacking in fact - in other words Lovejoy did not leave the dog in the car for over 12 hours resulting in his death - sounds like the Sheriff is doing his job. That was animal abuse - just awful.

Love, Light and Protection for All of The Horses

Posted by: Mary S at September 27, 2007 10:30 PM

JonnaGrey....I AGREE 100% with everything you just said!!!!!

IF we want to BEAT them we must BEAT THEM at their OWN GAME and it's NOT HORSES it's really MONEY and LOT'S OF IT!!!! Horse slaughter worldwide makes Velda approx a billion dollars I'd estimate....IT'S ALL MONEY!!!!!! UGLY DIRTY MONEY....BLOOD MONEY!!!!!!

THE US market is probably worth 60 million to VELDA HOLDINGS or MORE?????

So let's get down and dirty Barbaro Nation...let's start playing their game!!!!!!

I'm disgusted with politicians but Jonna's right ....they do understand the language of MONEY!!!!!

How to go about this?????

Posted by: Maribel at September 27, 2007 10:34 PM

###
Mary, I also support Sheriff Arpaio's decision for Sgt. Lovejoy. I'm sure the family is very sad and sorry - what else could they be? I agree that Bandit is the one who suffered terribly and that Sgt. Lovejoy should be treated as any other individual for a crime such as this. I certainly hope that he is never given a canine partner again. How can people forget their children or animals are in the car? ESPECIALLY IN ARIZONA!! Makes no sense to me.

Posted by: Jill in AZ at September 27, 2007 10:41 PM

Barb in AZ...why was the body creamated so expeditiously??? That dog was a police officer as a member of the K-9 unit and Sherrif Joe did do the correct thing and I'm sorry for Ms Lovejoy but her husband needs to know that Bandit was an officer too....how would she have felt if her husband was left to die in the scrorching heat and then his body creamated before a proper investigation had been done?????

We do have the right to express our opinions on the evidence presented...that is democracy???YES????The good ol' US of A.....

Sherrif Joe is a very fair person ...why would he be so upset if there was no reason??? Doesn't sound right to me?????

Bandit has rights too...as a police officer and as a canine....

Posted by: Maribel at September 27, 2007 10:42 PM

We have some pretty cool FoBs in the House. How about Wendy Drew? Doesn't she rub elbows with golfing legends on a regular basis? Who does Martita know in NYC? John Holland has to have a little black book full of names.

And the Jacksons. Isn't there tremendous equity in their names? Couldn't they compel friends/ associates to back this kind of a campaign?
We all made up a list not too long ago of Hollywood types who are horse freaks. Bo Derek, Andy MacDowell, Viggo Mortenson, Robert Duvall....there's got to be a list out there...I'll go looking after I get something to eat.

We need to put on our Thinking Caps as they used to tell the Brownies...and come up with some ideas...maybe that's what the recess between 110 and 111 is for.

Posted by: jonnagrey at September 27, 2007 10:49 PM

Yes, Debbie I have to laugh at Chief. He was a wild un-socialized dog when I got him almost 12 years ago. dug him out from under a abandoned mobile home in a snow storm. He hated the world and eberyone in it. It took me 3 years to conquer him. So eventually my house and backyard looked (still does) like a concentration camp. Hot wired fence (he knocked the boards out and took off), sign on front door DO NOT KNOCK OR RING DOOR BELL, as he went through the blinds when someone was here. Once he went through my bedroom window to get a cat. have reinforced windows. I had just got up or the shattered glass would have killed me. Now he is 12 and stays away from the fence but still destroys blinds. Everyone that knows me calls before they come over. Like 'put chief up". Now he likes people once they are in the house. He has become a very loving dog. oh yeah, he hates the vets office so when I take him we stand outside behind in the parking lot (like the social misfits we are) and the vet comes outside. If he ever has to have surgery I guess we will do it in the parking lot. What a challenge and fun he has been. People marvel at how he has changed but for the sake of the blinds they still call.

Hello everyone,

I have been asked to let you all know that Leslie in MN's Mother is in urgent need of our support, positive thoughts and prayers. And Reiki!

I received an email from Leslie this morning but I cannot post from work. She was on her way to the hospital to join her family.

Here is a majority of her email...I hope she won't mind me posting this but I don't want to risk adding/losing info. along the way...

_______________________________________

I just have a moment to write, as I am headed back to the hospital. Yesterday my mom had several seizures and was found by here sister laying on the bathroom floor. Ambulances and ER's.... I witnessed one of these seizures with my own eyes at the ER room. Oh My God! She did not return to consciousness all day. I need the help and prayers of the FOB.. My mom loves Barbaro very much. Several weeks ago she asked me to order her one of the Lime green shirts that we wore at Delpark. She has her wrist band and a beanie. When I brought her the Vanity fair magazine article and she saw the title "gone like the wind" her heart sank and she was very moved by it. She just layed her hand over the photo of Barbaro and Edgar and then looked up at me with sadness.

I hope that the healing thoughts of the FOB can help us through these days as my family does not really know what lies ahead. Tests seems to reveal no cancer in the brain, but we dont know if we are seeing everything. Maybe the chemo and the meds caused it?? dont know... Maybe the Famblee can send their help to us? If they wouldnt mind?

My mom is the one person in my life that never questioned my care for Barbaro.... she embraced it. I never had to "explain" or justify anything to her.

_____________________________________

Please Famblee, Fans,

Leslie needs us. Her Mother needs our positive thoughts, prayers and Reiki from the Fans who can provide that.

Thank you everyone.

I just received an email from Leslie in MN....

This morning I asked for her Mother's first name, knowing you guys would want to address her by name in your posts...Her name is Nancy.

UPDATE:

They still don't know if she has had a stroke or a reaction to meds or just some seizures that will pass. She has very slowly begun to speak but it is very scary to see.

When I hear more, I will let you all know.

Thank you everyone...from the bottom of my heart.

Hi All:

Just wanted to give you a few updates. JustaWalkinthePark raced last night in the heat and came in third. I talked to the head partner and he said he threw his bit at the eighth pole but he didn't bleed. Somethings going on with him but we don't know what. He's going to be paying another visit to Dr. Richardson in a few weeks to see if he can figure it out(again) for us.

My other horse Karakorum Elektra won her race today. She is really turning out to be a good one. I just wish I knew more about her.

Finally, they drew the posts today for Cobra Strike's race on Saturday. He drew post position one in a ten horse field. Not a good place to be and he's going against some heavy hitters. I don't know guys, I'm very nervous about this. He's got to break on top to have a shot at this. Please keep the prayers and good wishes going for him to have a safe trip home.

Thanks,

Laurie and Leslie, sending healing thoughts and love to your mom, Leslie. How terribly frightening. Will pray that the cause of her seizures are found soon and are benign and controllable.

Barb in AZ, I trust you and what you say. It's just hard to come to grips with this event, and how an innocent dog suffered terribly. A dog dedicated to his job and partner, unquestioningly and with complete and unselfish devotion. The way that humans betray animals such as Bandit will tear my heart to pieces as long as I live. It's not how it's supposed to be.

*** I have to agree with Mary S. - I just heard the story on the news. If the story changes then fine. No one should have to die a death like bandit did. That is a slow and painful death. He is only being charged with a misdemeanor. If that were a human life, it would be considered manslaughter. Animals feel pain just as much as the rest of us. I just don't get it.

Just got on the board and read your posts re Leslie's mom...Reiki is on the way to her and the family and medical staff. It is so wonderful that we can reach out to each other for support.

###
Couple of ranch updates. There is a new rescue - his name is Nosy and is a paint pony - maybe 14 hands - who has one of the sweetest dispositions I've come across. He came right to me when I arrived. Stormy was out grazing and he does get a bit "protective" when I'm there. Once things settle at the ranch, Willow is going to investigate getting certified as a therapy rider - Nosy would be perfect for small children.

###
Stormy has come into his own as a healer-horse. Today, he bonded with a 6-week-old orange tiger kitten named Tinker whose mother abandoned him - he nearly didn't make it. Tinker's human "mom" just held him and Stormy came and just stayed with them. Both Stormy and Tinker actually fell asleep during this. This is the first time I've seen Stormy actually bond with another animal and I could feel the healing energy flow between them. Then he and Joanna had a meditation session and they went to a very beautiful place. I am so proud of Stormy and his evolution. I am honored and humbled to have played a part in his healing and growth.

Prayers to all those in need of comfort and healing. You are all the greatest.

That is not right. no water in the heat.
I will not go off for more than 4 hours at a time, because my dogs have to go out.
And if my babies are in the car the car is running with the air on.
How can anyone forget for that long of a time. No= he was wrong.

Hiya, FsOB! Again, thank goodness that Cavel will not appeal this decision. And kudos to CJ and everyone who's worked to convince Senator Leahy to sign on to S-311. That's awesome. I am very pleased that both of CT's Senators are on board, but as a native Kentuckian I am appalled that neither Senator in KY has agreed to co-sponsore this bill. I had no response from Sen. McConnell's office when I wrote to him. I agree with Jonnagrey that it would really help if more celebrities came on board. Jonna's list was superb. I was wondering what about Bob Barker now that he has resigned from TV? And I don't know if Doris Day ever does any publicity these days, but she is a tremendous animal lover. I believe that she runs a shelter for dogs in CA. And isn't Jill Curtis' husband Tony Curtis? I think that Tippi Hedren also loves and works with animals.

#### Dear Kathy in SC: I am so sorry that your sweet little kittie, Fuzzy, passed away so suddenly. How ghastly for you, you've been through so much with Cooper's recent illness. I am very sorry and you know I'm hoping that Cooper can return to the house this weekend.
To Alex: Shall you be at Keeneland during the October meet? Enjoy! Maybe you can lobby the staff of Senator McConnell & Bunning.
To Gae: The "Hot Brown" sandwich originated at the Brown Hotel in Louisville. It is a delicacy, to be sure. The cheese sauce is Mornay Sauce. I've only had them with turkey and strips of cooked bacon, not with ham. Camille Glenn had a great recipe for them in "The Heritage of Southern Cooking". A great way to use leftover turkey after Thanksgiving!
Hello to D'Anne, great to see you.
To Marg in Maine: Great work, congrats!
To Sandra: Lordy, your "Chief" sounds like he has all the 'not so desirable' traits of some of my past Huskies all rolled into one. I had to medicate my dear Illya & Pushinka for the first YEAR when Brent would come over to see me. He'd have to say, "I need to go to the bathroom" and I'd get down on the rug with the dogs to pet and hold them so that Brent could walk toward the bathroom! Gotta love a man who can accept that. They came to love him, however, and he was such a strength to me when they both passed away within 6 weeks of each other in 2001. Many blessings to your dear Chief!
To Leslie: I am so sorry about your Mother's illness. Please know that I am keeping Nancy and you in my thoughts. ####

Strategy for Friday September 28

It’s starting to seem like we may have seen the end of horse slaughter on American soil. We’ve all been waiting a long time for this! Hopefully, this will not change.

However, this makes it all the more important that we get the federal legislation passed that will stop the transportation of our horses to Canada and Mexico. It will also erase the possibility of another plant opening up in this country.
Thanks to everyone who rallied to participate in the poll. A very special thank you to CJ who compiled the information. This project is now complete and we will try to give you a synopsis of the results on Monday. This information gathering will help our legislators know how best to proceed. It will also help in compiling Daily Call Lists. You all did an awesome job and now we can concentrate on Daily Calling Lists to encourage those senators that we KNOW we can reach with enough support. Remember, we don’t need them all……so let’s get back to our regular calls and get enough senators to get this passed!!
