    Barbaro Updates: 382

    updates are now here.

Update 2440: The second day of the Keeneland Sale, and a new sales topper at $3.7 million to the Coolmore team: Son of Unbridled's Song Goes for $3.7 million, excerpt:

"The dam was a great race mare," O'Byrne said. "I liked this fellow very much and I think the cross might be the right key for him to stay. He was a great mover."

The immediate underbidder was Clarence Scharbauer Jr., who was returning to the Keeneland sale for the first time in 11 years.

Update 2439: Keeneland Sales began yesterday and this article notes the numbers are down and how much our market relies on the big two buyers, Coolmore and Sheikh Mohammed's team: Fewer fireworks at Keeneland September as gross, average dip, excerpt:

"The decrease I truly believe is that the two major parties just didn't hook up," said Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland's director of sales. "Last year, we saw that when they didn't hook up, [$3.2-million] was the top price and surprise, surprise, surprise, they hooked up and it was [$2.9-million]. Unless it is something that is really important to them, $3-million seems to be a top number. Maybe that's the new world."

Update 2438: Steve Haskin assesses the European challengers for the Breeders' Cup in the wake of their successes at Belmont on saturday. He also notes the progress of Discreet Cat: Steve Haskin's BC Countdown: The Invasion Begins.

Update 2437: This saturday at Presque Isle Downs we have a few good stakes races including the marquee race of the meet, the $400,000 Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes: Shaggy Mane Eyes Rich Presque Isle Downs Masters.

Update 2436: A dark day today at Presque Isle Downs, the track is closed and I have a day off!

Last night's racing was great, and the horse I ran in the third race won (Circular Reasoning). Her trainer, Liz Merryman, was a little more surprised by this win than her win on sunday night. She ran a great race leading from the gate to the wire and just holding on. She took a long time to cool out (she tried very hard) and once I did her up (poultice in front and alcohol behind) I went back to the frontside and had dinner with Liz and Chuck and Beth Lawrence. A very pleasant evening. Graham Motion also had a winner on the night, I think Fair Hill horses are doing very well overall on this Tapeta surface!

    Good Morning

Barbaro is no longer in first place on the candle site. He is in second - down 1,000 candles from first place! Yes, that really is the number. It will take most of us lighting to get him back in first place - with the new restrictions, you can only light 24 candles a day. Please help us.

Good morning everyone! I'm here to ask you to help Mike Rea celebrate his Birthday. Mike's computer is down and he has no way to get in touch with us. We certainly don't want him to think that he's been forgotten because he cannot post or update his blog. And because Alex doesn't see him now that he's moved away.

We are working with the great people at Kennett Florists to put together a Birthday basket for him. Please contribute what you can. I hate that this is short notice but his Birthday is tomorrow! Kennett Florists number is 610.444.6040

    Thanks!

I just learned that STRAIGHT FLUSH, Secretariat's half brother who was rescued by Stephanie Diaz, passed away in his sleep on September 8, 2007 in his sleep. He was 32. What a life.

Thanks to Stephanie and her friends, STRAIGHT FLUSH found a peaceful and loving end to his journey with recognition and respect.

He now makes his way to Secretariat, BARBARO, and all the other beloved friends.

    ACN always -- to them all . . .

    please don't forget 9/11.
it has only been 6 years...how could we forget, you say, but we are...

On that day I was being sworn in to what would become sitting over 6 months in Grand Jury in Syracuse. We got to the courthouse just in time to see the first tower collapse into itself, and slide to earth. Of course, the assembled us briefly, and let us go, the skies seemed filled with F-14s from our local National Guard unit.

I got home, and the second tower fell shortly thereafter...

I will never forget. (PS the reason we did Grand Jury for 6 months was that cops, giving their fellows in NYC and NJ breaks, were down state on a regular basis, and many cases waited for that ritual to diminish and the officers in charge of the cases we were sitting on returned...it was bizarre, to say the least.)

Glad to be home. All puppies well and happily, one home who is sitting the two fostergirls can't decide which to keep...and may keep them both. Their two other hounds are 11, and they are mindful of the benefits to have younger hounds in their heart when they lose their older hounds...
Ursula kisses Tom's ears, and Franny nibble on his toes....sounds like a done deal to me. Couldn't be happier about that...

I will be back on the phone after running some errands this morning...the board seems pretty quiet. Maybe it's just the Fall: that weird back-to-school feeling everyone gets no matter how long they've been out of school.

I miss the pelicans flying over our beach house on Edisto Island, the dolphins slicing through the warm, shallow water. It was heaven and I could not have done it without my wonderful greyhound friends...god love our friends.

TTYL my dears: best to all: PS: How did Edgar break his ankle?? And I prayed that I'd come back to news that Cavhell was dead in the water....sigh.

    All:

There are a couple of active fundraisers going on over on the DB to keep some gorgeous horses out of the hands of the kill buyers. I know everyone has been more than generous, but maybe you can shake out a piggy bank or look under the couch cushions for some cash to help out? Every little bit helps to keep a horse from winding up on a plate.

Thanks for all you do-- everyday!!

    Good Morning Everyone,

No cheerleading today for the Barbaro Bunk & Breakfast. Too much on all of our minds; hay shortages, way too many Horses at risk, employment (or lack thereof) and the sixth anniversary of the worst terror attack on this great nation.

Today, I think we should take a moment and reflect. Reflect on what has brought us to where we are as a nation and where we are going. Pray for all who serve, many are FsOB. Some serve here as Police, some as Firefighters, some in the military. Many of those who serve are not human too. Dogs serve to guard against drugs, explosives, illegal trafficking in humans and as service animals for disabled people. Horses serve, as many did on September 11, 2001, with police forces around the nation and, lesser known to many, in the military. Not only do Horses help to honor servicemembers and veterans at their funerals, but Horses, mules and donkeys serve in combat. They are used to carry people, equipment and supplies in regions such as Afghanistan.

We owe so much to so many, human and animal. As we go about our day, remember. And if you see a veteran, serving member, police officer, firefighter or animal in service, please say "Thank You."

Alex, a heartfelt "Thank you" to you Sir. You allow us to share this forum with you, enabling many good things to come about. You are a shining star in the world.

    No Horse left behind.

A special prayer for those who perished on this date six years ago in the horrible attack on our nation. God keep you close, as we remember you. And praise to the heroism of those on Flight 93 , who "more than life their country loved..." I had no pictures of me with my cats, so I sent a picture of them together labeled, "Sir Seamus the Shy and Princess Maizie Lee, proud owners of Nancy in CT"....and when I saw your post I thought it worked because Sophie owns your heart!

Good Morning all Fans of Barbaro. Alex, enjoy your day off !!!!!

I just talked to Rachel at Kennett Florist - made a donation to Mike Rae's basket. What a nice surprise that will be for him. I know his birthday is tomorrow and it is short notice, but please donate if you can. He loves peanut M&Ms and coffee so Rachel said they would fix up something nice for him with those items for sure.

A big Thank You to all who sponsored the MO Horse Heroes for Mrs. Jackson's birthday celebration fundraiser. Once again Fans of Barbaro came through and all horses have at least five sponsors. Fans of Barbaro are Simply the Best !!!!

The First Anniversary of the MO Horse Heroes accident is September 27th so there is a special fund raiser planned for the anniversary. When you donate to the horses you will automatically be part of a drawing for some beautiful items made by our own Glenda Jo O'Brien and Pat DeLong among other goodies. Details will be posted on the discussion board the end of this week. Watch for them. We hope to reach our 25,000 dollar goal with the anniversary fundraiser.

Have a great day everyone !!

Tomorrow will be Mike Rea's Birthday! Kennett Florists is making him a nice basket full of his favorite things. I hate asking for money but if anyone would like to be part of his birthday, please call up Kennett Florists at 610.444.6040!

For those of you who may not know Mike:

Mike was a trainer at Fair Hill who had a tragic accident while working one of his horses. During his recovery, the FOB's adopted Mike and followed his progress. He was overwhelmed by the groups generosity and goodwill. It truly made a difference and helped in his recovery. Mike still has a long way to go and needs encouragement as he gets frustrated with his limitations. At times, it seems his self esteem is low and I know he could use a boost! Let's make his birthday a special one this year and show him how far he has come since last year!

I MISSED AND WORRIED ABOUT JOE AND CATHY AND THE 107 HORSES AND THE GAZILLION FLIES SPENDING THE EARLY FALL AT TB FRIENDS. HIS JOURNAL THE OTHER DAY MADE ME CRY FOR HIM, FOR WHAT HE HAS TO TURN AWAY FROM AND TURN AWAY BECAUSE HE CANNOT SAVE ALL OF THEM. I KNOW THIS FEELING WITH THE GH'S. LAST NIGHT: TWO EMAILS CAN YOU TAKE DOGS FROM FL? CAN YOU TAKE ANY DOGS FROM NH? WE WILL PAY YOU////

WE HAVE TO BE SO CAREFUL. A YEAR AGO WE ALMOST GOT TURNED OUT OF OUR LITTLE VILLAGE BECAUSE OF ZONING ISSUES...AND A FEW OTHER ISSUES SOLVED EASILY BY MORE PICK UP, AND SOME LANDSCAPING (CAN YOU IMAGINE.)

YESTERDAY I HAD TO CALL IN INFORMATION ABOUT MY DOGS WHO NEED NEW LICENSING THIS YEAR...ALWAYS AFRAID THEY'LL MAKE MY FRIEND, THE DOG WARDEN, ESTHER, SHOW UP WITH ASPCA TRUCKS AND SEIZE THE
    EXTRAS....

ANYHOW. I HATE HAVING TO PLAY GOD...WHICH IS WHAT YOU DO WHEN YOU'RE IN RESCUE....WHAT JOE DOES EVERYDAY AND ALL THE OTHER RESCUERS DO EVERY DAY.

AND THE FACES DO STAY IN YOUR MIND, WAY TOO LONG, AFTER YOU HAVE PULLED AWAY FROM THE KENNELS OR YOUR CONTACT WHO IS VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT YOU CAN'T TAKE MORE...

ANYHOW: HERE'S JOE FOR THOSE WHO DON'T FEEL UP TO LINKING. HE'S HAD A ROTTEN COUPLE OF DAYS.
    #################################################
    Tuesday, September 11th...
Not only a day of memory, but also a day of celebration. We give a big Happy Birthday to Nikki of Vacaville, who today turns 15. Last year Nikki adopted Two Times, a gelding who was named after the character in Goodfellas. Two Times came to us from the race track with a bowed tendon, and Nikki put him through a rehab program. On Labor Day weekend Nikki came to see us with banana cream pie made by her mom Julie. Incredible stuff. Nikki says Two Times has started over jumps, and he loves his daily exercise. Nikki and Two Times will begin jumping at competitions next spring. Tonight there is a birthday bash at Osaka Sushi, where 8 teenage girls will dine on tuna and tempura. For desert a Boston cream pie made by mom Julie. I would love to live next door to Julie. Happy Birthday Nikki, and it was really good to see you again.

Last night turned cold, and today might be 86 degrees. Our shoer Tim Gee comes this morning. 103 horses on our fly infested ranch. We await transportation of a gelding from Bay Meadows, and also an older gelding from the feed lot in Elk Grove. Two foster horses return to us this week. We are a wee bit crowded, but chores run smoothly. No bumps in the road. The older mare Gidget continues to do well, and Olympic Spirit has been turned back out to our poop on top of poop fields. Fade To Blue spent this past summer jumping in Southern California, but a suspensory injury is bringing him back to us. Fade To Blue made gobs of money as a race horse, and as a show horse he has won three blankets, $600.00 in cash, a trunk full of ribbons, and a gift certificate for a pedicure in a town called Stanton. Fade To Blue is passing on the pedicure. He should arrive to our ranch one week from today.

I would like to thank everyone for their phone calls and letters yesterday. Your support is so very much appreciated.

There was a phone call from a horse killer in Sacramento, and his name is Kevin. Kevin hangs out at the summer fairs, buying cheap or injured thoroughbreds for resale to slaughter. Kevin says he has become a fan. In the beginning Kevin hated me, hated the morning journal, but now he looks forward to my ramblings. Kevin says I should go on Oprah, and the two of us could weep with the audience. Kevin wants to know if I would like to rescue a little filly with a shattered knee? She finished last at Bay Meadows, so Kevin bought her from a trainer. Her knee is the size of a soccer ball. Kevin did not need to begin our conversation by sucking up. I would have bought the little filly anyway. She is at a feed lot in Turlock, and will come to us this weekend.

103 horses need to be fed before Tim Gee arrives. The coffee is from Starbucks, and the orange juice was made by Minute Maid. Alicia Keys on the cd player, which is always a good way to begin a new day. Enjoy your smoke filled skies Tuesday, and be sure to hug your horses. Boy do we need rain. Our fields are like concrete. Dusty dunes all over the joint. The days are shorter though. Almost dark while still doing evening chores. And the owls are showing up much earlier...

    Joe

    Fans of Barbaro,

Reading your posts today has heartened, saddened,
delighted me and made me very proud to be one of you.

I had forgotten to put ( actually get my husband to put) the flag on the porch to fly proudly.
But after reading your posts, especially Gae and Sophie's Lee, I went and did it myself.

Then I stood there and reflected and said a prayer
for all who have gone before us,
the tower, pentagon, and Pa.field victims, and
all our military and their families and loved ones.

And Lord , also, bless all those who work against
HS, and help us end it .

I'm in a reflective, i.e, emotionally sloppy, mood today so I'll just say love to you all and bye for now.BB

Tuesday 9/11 - extra nat'l target list (HAHS)

    Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES? Here is today's (Tuesday 9/11) extra National Target List from Humanity Against Horse Slaughter. These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact. Please don't attack this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR National Strategy, and the marching orders of your State group leader. If you aren’t in a State group, and/or if your State has no group yet, please contact Stephanie Breaux. sbreaux1@verizon.net

Don't forget to mention HR 503; ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the national strategy - a HS ban may come up for a vote in the Senate and/or the House that is not a free-standing bill such as HR 503 / S 311. Therefore - and I quote from what Shelley A posted after checking with the powers that be in DC - "we have been asked to continue getting cosponsors but to also ask our legislators to support ANY bill that contains language to stop horse slaughter" (and export for slaughter).

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

Bobbie B - what a beautiful and kind post. You brought tears to my eyes.

And Bobbie B and Pamela - thank you for mentioning Flight 93 -- what a great and heroic act. What lessons we learned from them that day.

Sophie's Lee - thank you for mentioning the animals. One PA yellow lab was killed in the collapse and a golden retriever discovered Chief Gancy's body that afternoon. Several lab seeing eye dogs saved their owners in the evacuation down the stairs. And let us not forget the standardbred horse that served at President Reagan's funeral in 2004.

Long story, but that yell lab, Sirius, was owned by my friend's brother in law, Dave Lim. They worked together in bomb detection for the PA after the first attack on the WTC in 1996...as Dave tearily said in many interviews, "He was the best pahtner I ever had..."

They were in the third sublevel when the shit hit the fan the first time. Dave and Sirius ran up, and were nearly killed by a jumper. Dave took Sirius back down to his crate, "to keep him safe until it was over." It was heartbreaking....

Well, you all know the rest.

On a day in January, they found Sirius's remains, and brought him out, draped with an American flag, gave him last rites, and walked him up the ramp, through an honor line of rescue workers, hats off, the whole thing. just as they did all the other victims....it was amazing.

I couldn't get Dave and Sirius out of my head for a long time...Dave got a second dog eventually, who was too excitable for the kind of work Dave does, and the third candidate, worked out fine.

Cannot remember HIS name...but the tributes to Dave and mostly to Sirius were many and varied. Dave started the Ididarod that year, for example.

    Hay Fambleee

Hay Alex, hope you have a lovely day off. Hope everyone is well. Just stopped in to say hay, thinking of you all, thinking of those lost on September 11, 2001 and in the days, months and years thereafter, and praying for comfort for the families and loved ones for those lost. That day is so present in my mind, as it unfolded before my eyes as I stood glued to the Today Show in disbelief. There isn't a being in the US, and maybe not even in the world, who was untouched by that event. I continue to pray for, and am hopeful that we will see peace in our lifetimes.

Hoping and praying for an end to horse slaughter, too, as we all are, and are all working tirelessly to achieve. With all the ongoing positive energy, it will happen.

Hoping to check in later. New computer wasn't ready yesterday, so am HOPING it will be today.

    Love to all

I think the FOBS are pretty smart or else they wouldnt be FOAs. Thus is off the subject but I have a problem with my 14 year old border collie. Lately in the middle (always at night) she wakes me up with a severe panic attack. She tries to hide and even jump in the bathtub and glues herself to my body. She had blood work, etc etc this week at the vets. Nothing physical can be found. My vet said she is getting senile and perhaps that is the problem. she is currently on anxiety drops which dont help. I am getting very little sleep as this occurs almost every night. She also eats very little. when she has one of these attacks she wont eat a cookie (which she loves) . With my dogs I call it "the cookie test". Have any of you run into this problem? I am about at my wits end. Thanks.

    Hi, everyone

An early happy birthday shout out to the wonderful Mike Rea and prayers for all the survivors of 9/11 and their families on this day of remembrance. Who can forget the brave dog Sirius, either? A somber day of reflection for us all.

As we soldier on and continue to work for a federal ban on horse slaughter, I would ask that you consider donating any amount you can to the many horses that were saved from the Cavel slaughter house when they were suddenly shut down for a time. A large number of those horses, including the blind mare Snickers and her foal, Willie, live at Fair Dinkum Rescue.

They are relocating from Wyoming to Indiana & need some help with their hay supply in the new location. It actually snows more in Indiana than in the area where they were located in Wyoming, so hay will be very important for all their rescue horses this winter.

Please click on the "Help the Miracle Horses of Cavel" link in blue and do what you can. It is a fun fundraiser but the need for it is very serious. Thank you very much to all who have generously donated so far!!

AFTERNOON REPOST, SHELLEY A, DEBRA, WI

    Strategy for Tuesday September 11

While we wait to confirm the status of the Agricultural Appropriations Bill in the Senate, we must keep up the push for cosponsors for HR503 and S311. We should be receiving instructions shortly and it is important that we are READY TO RALLY!!

On August 2, 2007 the House of Representatives approved an amendment to the 2008 Agriculture Appropriations bill that will temporarily bring horse slaughter to a halt by stripping funds from the federally required inspection of slaughter-bound horses. Without the inspections, the slaughter cannot proceed. This amendment must still be voted on in the Senate. This amendment is only a temporary measure while the sponsors work to secure passage of the permanent American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

For this reason, it is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. We do not yet know how this will be introduced so this message is very important. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message.

    brimming with appreciation
for everyones magnificent work and efforts for barbaro and his legacy

    so sorry

    barbaro was so very present
    in each moment
    such a gift
    to witness.
    so many confirm this
even from watching him enter the gate
and springing out to run for the JOY
    OF IT ALL

    many
    doing invisible work
mary s. spreading her carpet of love
soft faith- care-bold blue royal blue and burgundy..framed by gold trim
shelley in ca. weaving the path to that congress
like...daryl is doing some great work
chipping at his corner..and it is working.
    .
    some are adopting a horse
    from the track
    ..bless joe
    tb joe.
.the pain he sees and transforms ..
    every little thing counts
    in the scheme
    of the elegant universe

    i believe
we all have a part in this circle
..fragments of silver and gold speckled
    blue like'robin;s egg

    nicanor
    ,littel one
and they seem so ready to take their spirits on.
    .fill into their own steps
    their way
    but in his too
    i can feel it
    steady on out
    for tomorrow 9-11
a lot of nameless angels were born on that day and got their wings.
to my heart, another sign to love to forgive to move forward... .
    how wonderful
it is to have the chance
to tell someone you love them

and to act on the love in your heart
no assumptions about the other one..listening
    listening then acting...

    Endangered Species Recovery Act (HR 1422 / S 700)

FOBs - Done with your calls for today? Here's Another Worthy Cause to bother our legislators about. Action Alert from Defenders of Wildlife, posted at this DB thread (with links for contacting legislators):

    http://forums.prospero.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=14543.1

    [excerpt]

Did you know that more than two-thirds of all wildlife protected under the Endangered Species Act -- including Utah prairie dogs and other animals -- make their home on private land? Yet conserving habitat for these species has offered few rewards to farmers, ranchers and other landowners … until now.

Please urge your Representative and Senators to support the Endangered Species Recovery Act of 2007 (H.R. 1422 and S. 700), important legislation that would help private landowners protect imperiled wildlife that live on their property.

The Endangered Species Recovery Act of 2007 would provide tax credits, deductions and exclusions to private landowners who voluntarily take measures to protect and restore endangered species habitat on their lands -- giving imperiled wildlife like Utah prairie dogs a powerful new ally in their struggle to survive.

Our endangered species need all the help they can get. Send your Representative and Senators a message now and urge them to co-sponsor the Endangered Species Recovery Act of 2007 (H.R. 1422 and S. 700).

This important bipartisan legislation is awaiting action in both the House and the Senate. If the bill is ever going to become law, we need to make our voices heard right now.

Please take action now to support this important legislation … and help save Utah prairie dogs and other imperiled wildlife on private lands.

MIKE C - I am in total agreement with you, but I suggest we don't hold our breath! Remember last year's Eclipse Awards when so many of our famblee members were upset that Barbaro didn't win??? I shut my mouth and bit my tongue, because what I expected is exactly what happened! Memories are short, the prevailing attitude seems to be "what have you done for me LATELY?"....not to mention that the racing industry tries, as rapidly as possible, to gloss over deaths from breakdowns - it's a "turn-off" for the general public, and therefore best swept under the rug...harder to do with a horse of Barbaro's stature, for sure, but not impossible. It's that whole "get over it" mentality...

I know that I have had to really research to find out the (usually fatal) outcome of any breakdown I've seen - just for my own purposes of wishing the poor horse a peaceful rest!
Sorry to sound cynical...but I think it's reality, and would LOVE to be proven wrong!

    Strategy for Wednesday September 12

On August 2, 2007 the House of Representatives approved an amendment to the 2008 Agriculture Appropriations bill that will temporarily bring horse slaughter to a halt by stripping funds from the federally required inspection of slaughter-bound horses. Without the inspections, the slaughter cannot proceed. This amendment must still be voted on in the Senate. This amendment is only a temporary measure while the sponsors work to secure passage of the permanent American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

It has now been confirmed that the Agricultural Appropriations Bill DID pass the full Senate Appropriations Committee in the Senate. It now awaits debate and consideration on the Senate floor. There is no specific date of when it will go to the Senate floor. In the meantime, we must keep up the push for cosponsors for HR503 and S311. We should be receiving instructions shortly and it is important that we are READY TO RALLY!!

For this reason, it is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message.

We still need people to be involved with state groups. It has been proven to be the most effective way to get information out quickly when the need arises. If you can help, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net

As you know, pro slaughter people are very organized and are out spreading their message. We MUST be louder!

Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE….let it be heard!!
Thanks for everything you do and have a great day!

    Hello FOBs,

I know there have been so many in need of prayer and now I'm adding my husband's name to the list. Please pray for Denny - I'm going to be taking him to the emergency room in a few minutes. His blood level is so dangerously low, he could have a heart attack at any time. They are going to give him a transfusion immediately and then find the cause (bleeding somewhere). thank you in advance.
