An update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:

It is a beautiful Tuesday morning here at Fair Hill. The air is nice and cool so far and the horses are enjoying it. Early this morning there was a report that Luke marched right out to the porta pad with lots of spunk. After going cross country yesterday with Pistol I was a bit worried about his feet but apparently he was fine. While I was talking to Beth in the isle this morning Red Aspen stuck her head out to visit with me. Beth said that her hind feet were rarely on the ground this morning while they walked her in the barn. It's great to hear that she is feeling so fresh. I gave her a kiss on the nose and took a close look at her eye which seems to be fine. Grandma was sleeping again in her stall. She was standing but her lower lip was hanging down (this I took as a signal that she was in a deep sleep). We had a good laugh at how lady like she looked. Anyway, like they "say pretty is as pretty does!" She is a racehorse that's all that matters. Whip Smart looked bright coming back to the barn this morning and hopefully she will run well tomorrow. Our Diva (Real Lace's little sister) got her first set of shoes on this morning and she stood like a trooper. As I was leaving the barn I took a few minutes to love on Mass Romantic. She was nuzzling my hand looking for treats, what a good girl she is. I hope she trained well today.

And I have finished my laundry ...

Update 2410: Tuesday at Presque Isle Downs is dark day (no racing) and the racetrack is closed for training, so it has a decidedly Sunday feel. This was my last day at my current job, which included mucking out seven stalls, walking one, doing one up (four standing bandages) and tidying up. Tomorrow I start work for another trainer and will be doing some different things. Change is good I guess! It should also provide me more time for research for my book as well as writing the book, which is much the toughest part of the entire book project! As it is dark today at the track it is also laundry day, and a day to try to get out and actually see the area a little bit, after a nap!

Update 2409: Bill Mott, Saratoga's leading trainer for the meet, is not typically known for conditioning early 2yos. Yesterday he closed the meet with a win in the Grade 1 Hopeful win: Majestic Warrior Roars to Hopeful Win, excerpt:

"Leaving the half-mile pole, I thought they had gotten away from our horse," Mott said. "At that point, I was wondering if he would be able to make up that kind of ground. He put in a tremendous run, and he has to be a good horse to make up that kind of ground. He was 10 out of it when they turned for home, and he rolled by them. He ran very professionally the first time. He's the perfect student. You can't ask for a nicer, better horse to train.

"Obviously, he proved today that he can handle the best colts we have on the East Coast. Probably, the logical step is to look at the Champagne (grade 1, Oct. 6 at Belmont Park). I can't tell you what an exciting thing this is for me. I think I've run one horse in this race. I ran Paradise Creek in here, and he turned out to be a turf champion. Words can't describe (the meet). This really tops it off. It doesn't get much better than this."

Strategy for Tuesday September 4

Hard to believe the summer is over……. We must continue to keep up the push for cosponsors for HR503 and S311. Hopefully, things will pick up very quickly and we will be getting further directions. It’s important that we are READY TO RALLY!!

On August 2, 2007 the House of Representatives approved an amendment to the 2008 Agriculture Appropriations bill that will temporarily bring horse slaughter to a halt by stripping funds from the federally required inspection of slaughter-bound horses. Without the inspections, the slaughter cannot proceed. This amendment must still be considered in the US Senate. This amendment is only a temporary measure while the sponsors work to secure passage of the permanent American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

For this reason, it is important when you make your calls, you request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. We do not yet know how this will be presented in Congress so this message is very important. In addition to the Daily Call List, please contact your own senators and representative with this message.

We still need people to be involved with state groups. It has been proven to be the most effective way to get information out quickly when the need arises. If you can help, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net

As you know, pro slaughter people are very organized and are out spreading their message. We MUST be louder!

Good Morning our Ray of Sunshine, Barbaro

Thank you, Barbaro, we need your sweet spirit lingering among us, we have many tasks to finish, and some are so hard to do, getting the federal legislation to listen to its people and pass the anti-horse slaughter bill, and stop transportation across the borders...Have fun, we love you!

Good Morning Family/Fans of Barbaro

Hope all is safe and those who had a few days off, enjoyed themselves and get rest.

Here is our magic words, call, fax, email.

Please remember the rescues, the fallen angels, the ones suffering, human or animal, our wildlife, and our family, each other, with love and compassion.

Have a beautiful day.

Thank you Tim
My heart goes out to our Fallen Angels, all animals that have suffered abuse and neglect..and we are here, and we are taking action.

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is really easy and helps animals in
need. Please pass this information on! The Animal Rescue Site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota
of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Click to Feed the Animals - Rescue Site

Again, please tell your friends and cross post!!!

If you are from Pennsylvania, will you join our team? We are strategically working to gain more co-sponsors here in the Commonwealth.

Good morning everybody!

I am not a regular Comments poster but I thought some of you might want to help a little 8 mo. old buckskin baby to get his leg fixed. He was bought for $75 from a kill buyer and has a broken ankle that healed crooked because his former owner never even had a vet look at it. It can be fixed with surgery and that's what we're trying to do.

Please go the this link for the forum, if you'd be willing to donate to this little boy or if you just want to read his story.

http://forums.delphiforums.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=14152.152 The thread name is "Please Help Kansas Little Buck" under Horse Rescue. You may have to click on the title bar of the heading for all folders, if you don't see it right away. My link probably doesn't work, because I never seem to be able to do that successfully. If anyone else knows how, please post the thread link here so we can get some help for this baby.

Thank you for any help--Indy

Tuesday 9/4 - extra national target list (HAHS)

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES? Here is today's (Tuesday 9/4) extra National Target List from Humanity Against Horse Slaughter. These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact. Please don't attack this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR National Strategy, and the marching orders of your State group leader. It you aren’t in a State group yet, and/or if your State has no group yet, please contact Stephanie Breaux. sbreaux1@verizon.net

Don't forget to mention HR 503; ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the national strategy - a HS ban may come up for a vote in the Senate and/or the House that is not a free-standing bill such as HR 503 / S 311. Therefore - and I quote from what Shelley A posted after checking with the powers that be in DC - "we have been asked to continue getting cosponsors but to also ask our legislators to support ANY bill that contains language to stop horse slaughter."

If long distance charges are a problem, use these DC 800 numbers and ask for the legislators by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of each legislator's office phone).

Congrats to Bill Mott for winning the training title at Saratoga, I visit his barn in Florida all winter at Payson Park and like Leslie I bet on Majestic Warrior in the Hopeful because Mott does not run 2 year olds in stakes unless they have a great chance to win. Awesome stretch run and maybe a future star.

ANNA & JOAN - it's very sad! Cathy was at an FOB event at Miracle Horse Rescue this weekend (and with her adopted horse, Cloud), and was called home because Clarissa's condition had deteriorated...she doesn't think Clarissa will be with her much longer, so a candle and a prayer would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

Thanks Nancy...I knew Cathy was looking forward to MHR, being with Cloud and everyone...she had left work early to spent time out there...this certainly breaks my heart hearing about Clarissa.

I didnt watch it but this morning on The View new host Whoopi Goldberg defended Michael Vick saying it was part of his culture. I have several friends from his "cukture" and they are appaled about the dog killings. I dont understand the culture part. Am sending what I can to the little colt, Chance, whose mother was taken to mexico or canada. He is 2 months old and needs eye surgery and lots of love. His mother I am sure is no longer living but how she must have suffered. Every time we help a foal or horse in need it is a tribute to Barbaro.

Hi Sherry:

My letter is just short and sweet -- I set out each item with a BIG check mark (which won't come through here) -- here it is:

Dear Senator Schumer:

Horse slaughter must be stopped because:

 The industry operates in blatant violation of current federal laws;

 Treatment of horses by the slaughter industry is inhumane;

 American horses are not raised for human consumption and their meat contains toxic drugs;

 We can do better – we can be more humane and find better answers to this problem – we’ve already started with more than 200 equine rescue organizations in this country.

PLEASE CO-SPONSOR S311.

PRADO SIDELINED: Edgar Prado, who rode Barbaro to a Kentucky Derby victory in 2006, will be sidelined at least six weeks after breaking his right ankle at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Prado was injured when his mount, Admiral Bird, stumbled after running the seventh race. The jockey fell to the turf course and was taken to a Albany Medical Center, where several screws were inserted into his ankle. He was released from the hospital Monday.

I think Dr R is such a sweet man. And no I don't mean anything inappropriate by that. When I met him at Saratoga he immediately saw my Barbaro pin and knew that I was a Barbaro fan. But I never felt like it was a put down or anything. He just simply used it as a way to identify me. The poor man meets so many people day in and day out I would think it would be hard to keep it all together.

Just a quick post to reassure everyone that though I have been one of the silent ones of late due to work and family commitments, a family vacation and spending as much time as possible with the Moses the horse I sponsor at H.O.R.S.E. of CT. Not a day goes by that I don't miss Barbaro and feel inspired by him and his family including all of you. I continue to contact Congress daily as part of the CT state call group and hope to schedule another visit for the CT FOB's to H.O.R.S.E. of CT when the weather gets a little cooler.

I know there are many more like me out there and I will sign on more often even if it just to say hello, I'm here.

Love to you all, especially to you Alex.

Good Evening Everyone,
I'm crossposting this from the Barbaro Bunk&Breakfast thread on the DB. Sorry it runs on a bit, but I'm cheerleading a little bit. I love you all and my prayers are with all of you.
Lee

Hi Everybody,

Thought I'd check in and see how we're doing. Looks a little quiet so I guess I'd better get my cheerleading outfit back on. I promise, no high kicks. LOL

We have a great thing going here. We're saving money; getting ideas together; watching a dream become reality. The momentum is building everyday; I can feel it. I can also feel a big bay horse and a lot of his friends pushing us on; as dear Otherlyn would say, "their heartsongs are lifted joyously."

You didn't think you'd get off this easy, without my "personal" pitch did you? LOL Please, if you're not already doing so, consider setting aside $1/week for this effort. It's not much, won't even be noticed; pocket change adds up quickly too (just drop it in a jar/mug/can and before you know it, there's a couple of dollars!). Anyone out there thinking, "One dollar a week? That's only $52 a year. That's not enough to do anything with!"? Do this, mulitply that $52 by 600 (about the number of us that were at DelPark in April). Know that's a number that can do a lot towards building the BB&B/ACN B&B!

Picture this: A family checks in (to the Barbaro Suite of course lol) and settles down. Then they go out to the barn to see the Horses. They walk down a brick path with the names of FsOB who sponsored the walk and the names of Horses, great and not so great, especially Horses saved/rescued by FsOB. They walk past paddocks with rescued Horses in them, and on the planks are names too!

When they enter the barn, they're in a large open area with a ring in the center. The floor is a continuation of the brick path they followed. The first horse brought to the ring is Man in Havana. As close to seeing Barbaro as many of will ever come. After petting and giving him treats, other horses are brought out to be loved and enjoyed, most or all of them rescued from slaughter.

Next, they sign up for a couple of trail rides for the next day. Then they go back to the Inn and get ready for dinner. On the back of each menu there is the story of a rescued Horse. Accompanied by a short piece on the horrors of slaughter (to be replaced by laminitis when slaughter is ended).

The next day, while Mom and Dad are riding, the kids learn to clean up after, groom and take care of a Horse. The kids get a riding lesson afterwards. In the evening, the whole family takes a sunset ride.

This is just a dream now. But what a great way to spend a couple of days! What a fantastic way to start a vacation! We can do this, I know we can.

No Horse left behind.

Strategy for Wednesday September 5

It’s great to see everyone continuing to keep up the push for cosponsors for HR503 and S311.

List of Senators (Cosponsored S.1915 Last Year) Senators S311

Patty Murray D-WA Phone: 202-224-2621 Fax: 202-224-0238 Aide: Andrew Rowe

Bill Nelson D-FL Phone: 202-224-5274 Fax: 202-228-2183 Aide: Colin Mueller

Evan Bayh D-IN Phone: 202-224-5623 Fax: 202-228-1377 Aide: Patrick Hayes is handling it for Chris Murray

Mel Martinez - FL Phone: 202-224-3041 Fax: 202-228-5171 Aide: Frank Walker

Hillary Rodham Clinton - NY Phone : 202-224-4451 Fax : 202-228-0282 Aide: Trevor Dean

Senator Charles Schumer - NY Phone: 202-224-6542 Fax : 202-228-3027

Many thanks to those of you who visited with your legislators during the month of August. That is bound to make a tremendous difference in our efforts!!
We still need people to be involved with state groups. It has been proven to be the most effective way to get information out quickly when the need arises. If you can help, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net

As you know, pro slaughter people are very organized and are out spreading their message. We MUST be louder!

Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE….let it be heard!!
Thanks for everything you do and have a great day!

Shelley and Debra

Hiya, FsOB! Whoopi Goldberg's comments about the Michael Vick case were prominent when I logged on to our Internet server site this evening. As a native Kentuckian, I get insulted by and tired of people attributing bad behaviour to someone's being from the South. Trust me, none of the folks that I knew in KY would've engaged in something like this, no matter what their ethnic heritage was. So I was glad to see that Joy Behar spoke up (and I really enjoy Whoopi's wit as a general rule). Now I'll get off my soapbox and call it a night!
PS: The candles for Barbaro & LITF are very low. Bobbey's were

Elizabeth Thompson,

I am wondering the same as you. Where is everyone? I am so afraid that people are not involved in calling, faxing or emailing our Senators and Reps as much as we once were. We always had such a back and forth dialog throughout the day about it. It was really a great feeling to be a part of it. Because I couldn't call during the day, I have just called all the Senators on Shelley and Debra's list and left a message except for Sen. Webb's office which not let anyone leave a message.

Is anyone else calling? Are we giving up? I'm very concerned. If not us, who will stand up for the horses? Who?

Run with the wind Barbaro forever. I do it for you and your equine family.

Hi Robyn!

"His Royal Majesty" Bart has taken to stealing my chair the second I get up!

He lays on his blanket very quietly, by all appearances his eyes look closed, but no! He is laying in wait for the now beloved vacant chair, perfecting his hunting prowess and timing the precise moment to pounce!

Then, when I go to lift him off from the chair, he plays with his weight like a sack of potatoes! (Little turkey!) I can't help but laugh!!

Miss Montego, aka "Jaws", met my parents for the first time yesterday. What a Problem Child. I mentioned to my Mom that Montego had been such a good girl lately, better than usual. Well.....

I went to the gate of the paddock to put her halter on, Montego was standing right there and all of a sudden, she bit me! It bruised instantly!! (I happen to have tendonitis in that arm as well!)

So, I led her to the stable, cross-tied her and let her stand there...alone, for awhile. My Mom felt so bad for her. (Ah, who's bruised here?!)

The cut on her nose seems to be healing fine. She knows when I want to take a look at it...she backs away!

Right now, Emma (Sheltie) and Dean (French Bulldog) are keeping my husband busy by indicating that they need to go outside...and do nothing once they are out there!

Thank you for asking Robyn! May you have a restful night with sweet dreams...of Barbaro!

Today I was at the school where my students spent part of the last school year studying horses and bringing in their pennies to donate to the Laminitis Fund. This session was only the second time that I've worked with these students since school began this year.

Well...in walks one of my 4th grade girls and she plops a heavy plastic container down on my desk. Upon opening the container I see it is filled to the brim with loose coins. When I asked her what the money was for, she responded, "Well we're going to raise money for Laminitis again, aren't we?"

REPOST FOR THOSE WHO MAY HAVE BEEN AWAY FOR THE WEEKEND:

Hay FOB's:
There's a thread on the DB under Horse Racing called "EDGAR INJURED" (14216.1) and I'm in the beginning stages of organizing a gift basket/cards/ or any other suggestions, to send to Edgar from the FOB's to cheer him up during his recovery.

Anyone interested in contributing to our dear boy's favorite jockey, please email me at asa26amy@comcast.net.

I've read that he'll be recuperating in Florida with his family.
I'm still trying to confirm the best address to send the gift to, and should know something soon.

If I can collect enough donations, I would love to also donate in Edgar's honor to one of his favorite charities (Anna's House, Injured Jockey's Fund, etc). Some FOB's have already suggesed that the gift basket be small, and that a nice donation to a charity would be much more meaningful to Edgar.

Taking all ideas and suggestions! Thanks to all who've already responded, and I will keep everyone posted of the plans.

Thank you MJ. May you have sweet dreams...of Barbaro!

Peter Berg Talks

Published by Larry Carroll on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at 11:35 am.
Reporting by Nha Nguyen

“I’ve got the story,” Berg beamed, revealing his progress on filming the tale of ill-fated champion racehorse Barbaro. “We’ve optioned the story from ‘Vanity Fair’ about the horse, and we’re looking at [how to do] that.”

Berg envisions the flick as a modern-day “Seabiscuit” and was saddened to report that he was unable to meet Barbaro in his final days. “I’ve just followed the story, and read about it; there’s a wonderful story that Buzz Bissinger wrote in ‘Vanity Fair’ that I read.”

The director further revealed that the film will conclude with the horse’s passing this past January. “I think so,” he said. “Yeah.”
