Barbaro Updates: 374

updates are now here.

Update 2404: Hawty Creek is still the oldest PA bred maiden in the country ... but she ran a very good second today, going long on the turf. We have for a while thought this might be her favourite type of race but it has taken us a while to get her into this race (weather related issues etc.) Anyway, she ran great, coming from behind. Her owner called my right after the race, he was very happy.

I was at Presque Isle Downs this evening. The horse I ran in the fourth race ran fifth. They pulled a "special" on him, which means we had to go to the detention barn afterwards so the state could take a urine sample and draw blood. They do this with the winner and one other randomly selected runner. Anyway, he cooled out well. I then had to do up the Fair Hill runner, who ran in the fifth race, leaving Presque Isle Downs at 8:30 pm. Starting at 5:45 am I am getting a new appreciate for a groom's day on the backside!

Update 2403: Rags to Riches worked this morning at Saratoga, her first work since her most recent temperature spike. Discreet Cat also worked this morning. His second work on his way to his comeback: Rags to Riches Returns to Work Tab.

Update 2402: No rest on sundays for those of us working at Presque Isle Downs. The "easy" day is tuesday, as tuesday there is no racing (dark day) and the track is closed. It was a little chilly early this morning, but once the sun broke through it started to warm up nicely, and we now have another lovely day. I mucked eight stalls (my record i think), which included the Fair Hill shipper I am looking after who is running tonight in the fifth race. After mucking eight stalls, bedding them down and doing the water buckets I had one to ride. She galloped a mile and a half, took a bit of a tug but went nicely. It was beautiful out galloping by that time. After cooling her out I went over to take care of the Fair Hill horse and give him a pick of grass on the only grassy spot on the backside. Finally I returned to the other horses and groomed them and left. A busy morning's work.

I did catch up with a couple of jockeys who rode last night. Their impressions of the new track were positive (although one of the jock's horses did not run too well). I asked each of them about the kick back. The first jockey said there was none (and he was the one riding at the back mostly) and the second noted it was just like turf, where you can get a few bigger "clots" but that is all.

Update 2401: More feedback from the opening night at Presque Isle Downs: Presque Isle Quick Out of the Gate and Presque Isle springs the latch on inaugural meet.

Edgar Prado was involved in a freak accident when galloping out after the seventh race at Saratoga yesterday: Prado Hospitalized Following Saratoga Accident.

Hawty Creek is running today in the ninth race at Philadelphia Park. I will be running The Real McRoy in the fourth race at Presque Isle Downs.

Update 2400: Lawyer Ron's second consecutive impressive win stamps himself as the firm leader of the older horse division and likely favourite for the Breeders' Cup Classic: Lawyer Ron Crushes Woodward Rivals.

NoBiz kept his turf winning record alive, even if only by the slimmest of nods at the wire: Nobiz Like Shobiz Continues Turf Success.

Presque Isle Down's first race was marred by a breakdown. The meet could not have started on a worse note, despite the fact that this is a very forgiving racing surface. We had a runner in the fourth race, Peppermint Echo, and she ran a decent race to finish third. She drank plenty of water afterwards (more than a bucket) and I think will get a lot out of the race. On my way to check on the Fair Hill horse I am looking after, I noticed someone else's horse was cast. Myself and another trainer and his groom managed to pry the horse away from the wall. A tricky proposition sometimes. Anyway, lets hope the rest of the meet proves this is an exceptional racing surface.

Update 2399: Michael Dickinson, who is at Presque Isle Downs to oversee the introduction of his Tapeta track during the opening of the meet, plans to retire from training at the end of this year: Presque Isle Downs Puts Tapeta Footings to the Test, excerpt:

Promoting, marketing, and overseeing installation of Tapeta Footings all over the world has impacted Dickinson's training career in a positive way. It has removed him from the 24/7 rigors of racetrack life and allowed him to travel with his wife.

And at the end of this year, Dickinson plans to retire from training to devote himself full time to Tapeta Footings.

"Training is your own treadmill," he said. "I enjoyed this last year very much, traveling the world. Having a good track is like having a good horse."

Prairie Meadows has, for the time being, decided not to adopted a synthetic surface: No Synthetic Surface at Prairie Meadows--For Now.

Update 2398: A simply gorgeous morning this morning at Erie. Excellent weather for our opening night of racing for sure. I only had one to ride today, which was a shame given the lovely weather. He galloped a mile and a half, and he went very nicely. It is nice to gallop a horse that appears to love the track and just relaxes very nicely throughout the gallop. Lets hope he runs fast across the track on monday! Other than galloping one horse I did my usual chores, which are mucking seven stalls (bedding down and doing the water buckets), grooming six horses and bandage a couple at the end of the morning. Later today I have to return to the backside and get our horse ready and go over for the fourth race. Lets hope we run well.

I am also going to be helping a Fair Hill trainer who is leaving a horse up here for a couple of days while he returns to Fair Hill. It should all keep me busy. One of his instructions was to graze his horse for fifteen minutes ... I did not know there was grass here, but he found a small patch about a quarter of a mile from his barn!

Update 2397: Saratoga's feature today is the Woodward (Grade 1 for older horses) which needs to provide an older horse which will be able to compete with the strong crop of thee year old we appear to have when it comes to the Breeders' Cup Classic: Another Monster Effort From Lawyer Ron?

Last night I went for a quiet beer in an adjoining (to the motel) restaurant / bar and had interesting coversations with Mike Jester (Real Quiet) and Ben Perkins. Mr. Perkins had some wonderful stories to tell from his illustrious training career and is at Presque Isle Downs to oversee his son's string for the meet. He volunteered to interview for my book, I think he will be fascinating.

Here are the entries for tonight at Presque Isle Downs. I will be running a horse in the fourth race: Peppermint's Echo.

Good morning, Alex! Good morning up there, Barbaro and Friends! Good morning, fellow Fans!

I hope everyone has a great long weekend. I pray all horses racing come home safely. (Go Brass Hat, Smokey Stover, Shake the Bank, and NoBiz Like Shobiz!)

Cool and pleasant in Maine this morning and there's a wonderful story on the forum about a rescue that took place less than 20 miles from me - Family of six...

Prayers to all in need - no matter how many legs.

Safe home to all brave horses who put hooves to track this weekend, and every day! Barbaro, shine your light on you equine brothers and sisters...

For those of you fortunate enough to be traveling this holiday weekend, have a great time and remember this home if you have a spare minute...

Our feline friend Felix is a busy boy - not only is he an adventurous training rider in Equine Heaven, but now Felix is also a tropical storm in the Caribbean...that boy gets around!

ALEX - you are already having such wonderful adventures that I envision a very weighty tome from you! I love the name PEPPERMINT'S ECHO, although our sweet spirit horse winnied a reminder that he did change his mind and prefer SPEARMINT candies....he hopes you will understand that he will secretly be rooting for SPEARMINT'S ECHO to run swiftly (and sweetly) tonight!

BLESSINGS TO ALL FAMBLEE and their two and four-legged friends!

Alex? What do you mean you will be running a horse? Or did I read that wrong? It said Peppermint Echo. Have you been exercising him? Great. Love to Barbaro Thanks Alex.

REMEMBER THE MO HORSE HEROES

JUST ONE MORE WEEK to participate in Rosemary's beautiful fundraising tribute to the Mo Horse Heroes...even a $5 contribution would be much appreciated! This particular tribute will honor Mrs. Jackson's 70th birthday later this month...and we are very close to reaching our goal of $25,000 in sponsorship from all of Rosemary's tributes! Please read the thread and help out if it's possible! Thank you.

Alex, good luck today with Peppermints Echo--her sire is Eastern Echo, also the sire of my retired rescue horse (and rescue!) Echo Dancer!!! "Huey" did his share of winning here in California (his first win was with Chris McCarron in the irons, Del Mar Aug. 1997) and let's hope Peppermints Echo has the same success. Do let us know how she does!

We finally got rain here in the Mojave Desert--temp 100 degrees (more or less) and rain. Ack. Now we can look forward to weed control (but there won't be any dust).

At least the humidity will be less now that the clouds are gone.

Silver lining and all that.

Safe racing to all today--ESPECIALLY PEPPERMINTS ECHO!!! Congratulations and GOOD JOB!! on all the good work done on behalf of horses in jeopardy, and have a safe and sane Labor Day, everyone.

Horses feel fear, pain, thirst & hunger just like us. They are presently experiencing all of these things while being transported for slaughter and during slaughter. Horses have always been there for us and have done nothing but help humans. Help us call our senators and reps to end this cruel and undeserving treatment of our horses. Good Morning Everyone.

Reminder...if any of you are in the Philadelphia area, the one million dollar PA Derby will be run on Monday. We will have a table in the paddock area for the R.A.C.E. Fund and would love if some of you would stop by.
We'll be having a small silent auction that will include a beautiful lithograph of Barbaro done by Lee Ellen Smith. This was donated by Gretchen Jackson. I hate to give it up. LOL
Also, some of the jockeys will be stopping down to our table to do some signing. Some of the big names that will be there are Calvin Borel and Robby Alverado. Victor Molina, who has worked tirelessly to make this a success, has arranged for the jockeys to each donate one mount fee each for the day.

As many of you know, we have received tremendous support from Philadelphia Park management and the Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association. They have been very generous monetarily and by giving us every opportunity to promote R.A.C.E. Fund.

Please stop by and say hello. We will be right outside the paddock by the steps to the jockeys room. It will be a great day of racing and, hopefully, a great day for R.A.C.E. Fund.

Thanks again to Philadelphia Park and their belief in our cause!!

Chapter Update !!!

ONLY A MOMENT BEFORE...Chapter 24 is now posted on the DB, under the BARBARO thread. From Chap 24:

*** Something made the stars shine brighter....something warm and true. Fire-shines coming through the window, in the dark of night were ever so much more than heavenly bodies scattered about the sky. They were a projection of the shines lighted by the Frens, once again, making a connection.***

Have a wonderful weekend Dear Frens. Pray throughout the day, every time that you think of them, for the horses running their hearts out.

Is it my imigination or are we losing people here.? I cannot imigine that they no longer care about our cause and the legacy of Barabro. Someone set me straight as I may be wrong. (I am wrong a lot). I work with dog rescue as well as horse rescue and sometimes I think, Oh Lord. there are so many but I keep trudging on as Look at what we FOBs have done so far. We have saved over 1500 horses and raised over half a million dollars. I think of Snickers and Rosie and hundreds of others we have saved from slaughter and that makes it all worth while. We have to keep going as so MANY of the sweet horses are depending on us. They have no one else. Did mean to lecture here but all yole as well as me GET IT.

Just watched the Forego won by Midnight Lute at Saratoga, TVG announced that Edgar got hurt after race 7, was thrown from Admiral Bird after the race and didn't ride in the Grade 1, he was suppose to ride Midnight Lute. Hoping he isn't seriously hurt, Edgar would not want to give up a mount in a Grade 1 race.

Nancy, thank you. I hope you bet her to win. She did good. She's a good horse I just wish I had more info on her. Karakorum is unfortunately not like my other stable. I won't hear from them again until she runs. Unlike Fantasy Lane, where I know if my horse sneezes. That's why I have six with Fantasy Lane and only one with Karakorum.

Nevertheless, I'll take the win and be very happy with it.

Thanks again.

This is a beautiful and amazing story about a six horse family saved from slaughter. I copied a paragraph taken from their website:

I have been observing these horses. They are unique in social herd disposition. I believe this uniqueness may stem from living only among family, and also never being exposed to other horses and therefore other behaviors. I am a behaviorist by training, so their unique social unit is particularly interesting to me.

http://www.freewebs.com/sixhorsessaved/

She wants to establish a sanctuary with these 6 as foundation - that way they can stay together. A great looking anti-slaughter t-shirt is offered to help raise funds. More on the DB.

Hiya, FsOB! It was a gloriously beautiful day here on the coast of eastern CT, just the kind of day that the Big Bay One would've loved. I still think of Saturday as his "splish/splash" day.... May each of you have a good night and a safe remainder to the long weekend! Peace, RMH

#### To Otherlyn, welcome back!
To Lee: I'll keep you in my thoughts as you broach the lay-off subject with your family. Please hang in there, Lee.
To Sandra: I think many of the FsOB still come to the site, but are more active in the various threads than the "Big Board" itself. There are lots of state groups working on the anit-slaughter legislation as well; they communicate by e-mail. And on some days, the participation here can be back above 200 posters.
To Nancy in CT: How awful for Edgar. I'm sure that this experience must bring back thoughts of what happened to Barbaro's injury.
To Martita: It is always a joy to see you here! Peace, RMH ####

Just got back from Delaware Park where I got to see No Biz win the Kent Breeder's Cup Stakes.

Nancy, you are correct on two counts. No Biz is "ever-handsome," actually gorgeous! And, it was a tough race. No Biz didn't win by a nose; he won by a nose hair. Looking at it live, standing on the rail at the finish line, it looked like he edged out Twilight Meteor who came on unbelievably strong. Then, when they replayed it on the big screen, it looked like Twilight Meteor had won by a head bob. Finally, they showed the still photos, and I don't believe you could have put a piece of dental floss between their noses. It had to be a fraction of a second's difference, but No Biz won. Fantastic race! And best of all, everyone home safe.

CAROLB - oooooh, I am drooling that you actually got to SEE that race in person! I watched it on tv, and it certainly looked too close for comfort. Somebody on the forum (was it you?) was there and will post pictures of the handsome devil - I CAN'T WAIT!

Prayers for Edgar and hopes he has a swift recovery.

###
Martita, you send out such light and beauty and deep, searing, authentic emotion with your words. I'm going to e-mail you and tell you about two premature babies that didn't make it this week. One was human, one was a dove. But in their short time here, they showed love, courage and faith in their purposes. The little boy was named Bonnael, the dove was named Light of the Moon. They both gave love and they show me that Love Never Dies. I was honored to have been in the presence of the dove for a couple of hours.

Must go and get some rest for tomorrow' visit to Fair Hill with FOB Donna Quinn (anybody else able to be there? Should be there around 8 a.m.).

Take care everybody...you are all the greatest.

Prayers to all who are sick, scared, alone. YOu can come here for comfort and support from this wonderful cyber famblee.

LEE - thank you for posting about your sign-in name, "SOPHIE" and the special connection to "RUFFIAN".
I did not know about beautiful Ruffian until I came here following Barbaro's injury and I find it so beautiful to hear her special friends speak of her with such reverence!

My heart beats for your heart, Barbaro, always and forever! Run with the angels honey!!

And so much love to all "the Heavenly Herd" up there - Affirmed, Secretariat, Ruffian, Seabiscuit, Lost In The Fog, Mending Fences and too many more. . . . . but you know you take me to where angels walk!

Gently holding hands, paws, hooves, feets . . . . . with all the "famblee" and hugs and prayers to all in need tonight.
I was pruning a large rose bush today and my gloves were just not thick enough!! No wonder Mr. Bobbey Jackson wasn't too interested in those roses!

I have a problem with TVG "trivializing" a lot of injuries, horse and jockey alike. I realize they don't want to dwell on the often gruesome pictures, but some of their comments are downright unfeeling.

"That's horseracing," said one of the commentators (who is still there, matter of fact) after Barbaro's Preakness breakdown. I stopped watching them for awhile. I realize breakdowns ARE part of horseracing, but there is no need to make any comment at all, in my opinion.

If these guys cannot express at least TOKEN sympathy, they should shut the he** up.

So sorry about the breakdown at Presque Isle, but happy Peppermints Echo finished third and came out of the race thirsty and in good form. Those Eastern Echo horses are just FULL of "try."

We had a tornado touch down here about 3 p.m. PDT and it was quite exciting. I have my "lake" in the back yard and my new puppy, Snuffy Smith, discovered puddles and digging in mud.

Glad I didn't spend yesterday cleaning my floors ;o)

Prado injures ankle
By DAVID GRENING
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Jockey Edgar Prado on Saturday was taken to Albany Medical Center, where he was being treated for a possible broken right ankle, according to his agent, Bob Frieze.

Prado, 40, was injured when he was unseated by his mount, Admiral Bird, while galloping out at the conclusion of Saturday's seventh race at Saratoga, in which Admiral Bird finished second.

On the gallop-out, Prado and his mount were in between horses when Admiral Bird appeared to clip heels with another horse. Admiral Bird stumbled and Prado was unseated. He lay motionless on the ground for several minutes before being attended to by paramedics.

Prado was taken off the track on a stretcher and at first was brought to the track's first-aid room. It was decided at that point that he be taken to Albany Medical Center for further examination and X-rays.

Prado, who has 27 wins at the meet, was forced to take off his remaining mounts, including Midnight Lute, who won the Grade 1 Forego under Shaun Bridgmohan, and Diamond Stripes, who finished third under Mike Luzzi in the Grade 1 Woodward.

'without reflecting
on his greatness

leaning against
the towering thousand pound mass of trembling muscles
and quivering limbs

the moment of loving,
the embrace that
shares the pain,
putting himself between
the beloved and injury
risking safety

###Good morning all.

A dampish Sunday morning here, after the tornado touched down yesterday afternoon about 3 p.m. and left what is probably our seasonal norm of three inches of rain in the space of about 90 minutes.

Feels clammy out--but not as bad as it will be later when the sun is up. ;o)

Godspeed, dear Edgar.

Run free, Cantrel. Many sympathies to her owners.

Many peppermints, Peppermints Echo. Good job, little miss.

A good day for all, a safer day for all on the track, and onward--for Barbaro and all he has come to represent.

Hi--I don't post on Comments very often but I wanted to bring a little 8 mo. old buckskin horse to your attention. He was bought from a kill buyer for $75 and needs surgery for a broken ankle that healed crooked because the owner never had a vet treat him. It is a sad story but the outlook is good for him and this kind of surgery has been very successful on other horses.

Right now he is getting over a respiratory infection at a clinic in Nebraska. He contracted the infection at the killpen but he is getting better every day.

If you would like to donate to his care or just read his story, you can click on this link to his thread in the discussion forum:

All donations will be appreciated for this sweet little guy and the next person to donate $50 will receive a DVD of the NBC video, 'Barbaro, A Nation's Horse'

Thank you so much for any donation, no matter how small.--Ondine

Good moring FOB's,

Yesterday I received a most beautiful calendar from Bonnie of the Exceller Fund. I sponsor one of the horses, Take A Chance, who is rehabbing at Tranquility Farms in California. He was the TB who was minutes from being put down when we stepped in to save him. The calendar was a fundraiser this year for the farm and has a beautiful pic of Barbaro and other race horses, Del Mar and Tranquility Farms. This farm is specifically designed to help rehab and transition TB's from the race track to a new life. They are very anti-slaughter. The Farm looks beautiful! The calendar is gorgeous and as a bonus I got a lovely picture of Lost in the Fog.

The Farms website showcases what a wonderful place it is. http://www.tranquilityfarmtbs.org/who.htm

I just read that Edgar was hurt yesterday. Ouch. I am so sorry. My weekend in Saratoga in early August--on Sat I had the distinct privilege of meeting and getting to talk to Edgar for about 15 secs. He was on his way to ride the Jackson's horse in second if I remember right. That horse eventually came in for third was was totally impressive cause he had been squeezed to last early on in a sprint race.

But I'm glad that he'll have some time at home with his family and kids. That should be some great bonding time for all of them. Maybe I'm looking at this through rose colored glasses. That's just me. The glass is half full of milk not empty.

Now he'll be like Barbaro with screws in his ankle. Not sure which ankle he broke...

Martita, Holy words for Edgar, and for all of us who feel them but don't write them as you do. Thank you for pausing to honor Barbaro's friend and brother, remembering the moving photo of him kissing Barbaro in his stall at New Bolton: Edgar sounding the horn calling us all to our own humanity, the gentle man from Peru who loved Barbaro, who stood with him when he needed him most. Wishing Edgar a speedy and complete recovery. Believe.

RAGS TO RICHES WORKS TODAY

Alex thank you for posting the link above about Rags workout at Saratoga today.
Rags to Riches Works at Spa

Thank you Rags! Luckily the cell phone rang as I stood by the head of the backstretch this morning in the cool Saratoga air. "Isn't that Rags? The blaze, the T.A.P. saddle cloth?" Put on the driving glasses. Oh, hooray. That's her alright. I would have missed her, the big red horse who looked like she was barely over a trot, a lazy lope. Yeah, it was Rags breezing, making it look easy, making it look real easy and slow. Making it look like you could tie up your Nikes and almost keep up. Except that she's Rags to Riches, and she's da girl! Safe healthy training, good girl, we will be ready to cheer you on wherever your career takes you next.

### Dear SUN KING,:

It's no disgrace to run second, in the Woodward, to a horse like LAWYER RON. You have done a great job, running your heart out, to your own great glory, and to the credit of your Sire, CHARISMATIC.

I will always love you from afar, and pray that your owners will make sure that you are in loving, caring hands. Also praying that your Dad comes home from Japan, safe and happy.

Have a nice rest until your next opportunity comes along. I am watching, praying and rooting for the beautiful, great-hearted SUN KING.

Good Afternoon All,
Just checking in here today. Feeling a little better about life today too. Wanted to let everyone know that the Jackson's have 2 Horses running at Saratoga today. Their Horse Rolled is entered in the 2nd race at 1:32. It's a 6 furlong race on the dirt for 2 year old maidens. And in the 3rd race they have Stilled running; a one and 1/16th mile on the turf. Barclay Tagg trains both of them. I have a good feeling Rollers will have a good race, his post position? Number 8! Run fast and come home safe.

Thank you again for all the well wishes and support and, especially for your prayers.

LEE/SOPHIE....Rollers not only won, he ran away with the field! Thanks for the info - I didn't realize he was a son of Lael Stables!

Stick around here - like me, it may not change your situation, but you will still be happier here than gone!!!

Nancy in CT,
I missed the race! Had to help my lady with something and just caught the gallop out. So happy for the Jacksons that he ran so well! I only knew he was a Lael Horse because I looked at the entries for Saratoga to see about Stilled in the 3rd race and accidentally say Rollers' info.

I'm going to be here. I'm feeling better about life today. Already updating the resume and looking for a new job. Even saw some interesting openings with the government. Being in the DC area should be a plus. You're right, this family here is such a comfort.

No Horse left behind.

Hay, FOB's!

I have been home for about a half hour from Fair Hill. Thank you Tim and Penny for letting Donna Quinn and I do our thing.

The sweet gentleman, George Gilbert (no relation, but I want to adopt him)....the one who Red Aspen adores...his son passed away in his sleep a few days ago. He is staying around the horses to help him get thru this very difficult time...he had me nearly in tears when he told Donna and I. No parent should ever have to bury their child. Anybody that Red Aspen loves is very special. Prayers are going to him and his family.

Red Aspen looked a little tired, but it was great to see her...she was actually affectionate with me. Luke was wonderful. Real Lace was amazing. Donna and I got to meet Linda with Pistol...and got to see Our Diva (Real Lace's sister and a beauty). Got some quiet time with Luke today.

Enjoy this beautiful day, everybody!!!

Hay FOB's:
There's a thread on the DB under Horse Racing called "EDGAR INJURED" and I'm in the beginning stages of putting together a gift basket/or any other suggestion, to send to Edgar from the FOB's to cheer him up during his recovery.

Anyone interested in contributing to our dear boy's favorite jockey, please email me at asa26amy@comcast.net.

Still need to research the best way to send this to Edgar, which I'll be doing shortly. I've read that he'll be recuperating in Florida with his family.

Any suggestions for what should be included in the gift basket would be greatly appreciated!! Especially from those FOB's who have experience doing this kind of thing!!

I am convinced there is something wrong with the candle site....those candles are supposed to burn for 48 hours, and yesterday there was a NEW site started for someone and I went to light one and someone else's candle (that had only been lit a few hours) was burned almost all the way down...it hasn't been working right, imo, since they limited how many candles a person could light in a day!

I am sorry about Edgar. I will always remember him leaning to brace Barbaro to keep him from further hurting himself. At his age he should do fine and up and around soon with his broken ankle. I think it is a good idea to send him something from the FOBs. Just saw the poor little colt on the discussion board. He is so cute but has been horribly abused. Will send what I can to him. The poor little fellow has never known kindness or love. Every horse we save is a tribute to Barbaro.

The Arlington Park racing season was barely out of the gate last year when three horses suffered fatal breakdowns—two of them in the same race. Unable to move, one of the thoroughbreds, a 3-year-old filly named Casting Spells, was euthanized on the track, much to the horror of fans.

That June day was a low point for the track, which saw 22 horses suffer fatal injuries in 2006, said Roy Arnold, Arlington'spresident, recalling sharp declines in attendance and betting.

"We could not break out of the bad story," Arnold said.
Determined to resurrect its image, Arlington Park removed its dirt track and replaced it with an $11 million synthetic surface, no small task. Enough material was used to cover the playing fields of Soldier Field, Wrigley Field and U.S. Cellular Park nine times over, officials say.

The new Polytrack surface is winning praise from management, jockeys, trainers and fans. With the season heading into the homestretch, only 11 horses have suffered fatal breakdowns. And with more horses racing on a more consistent track, betting is up. So is attendance, officials say.

"It's been welcomed with open arms," Joe Kristufek, Arlington Park's oddsmaker, said of the new surface. "There's a new energy here."

Last year, people who knew nothing about horse racing would stop Kristufek on the street to express concern about Arlington Park, he said.

The number of horses that suffered fatal breakdowns represented a sharp increase from 2005, when eight horses suffered deadly injuries on the park's dirt track. But it was comparable to previous years, such as 2003, when 27 fatal breakdowns occurred.

Also fueling public outcry was the catastrophic breakdown of 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro later that year in the Preakness Stakes. Barbaro was euthanized in January.

Once the spotlight was shining on the breakdowns, it was impossible to escape the glare, Arnold said.

Midway through last season, Arlington Park hired new veterinarians and increased the number of pre-race examinations for every horse before every race.

Several other tracks, such as Keeneland in Kentucky and Del Mar in California, were installing Polytrack as a way to increase safety. Arnold decided switching to a synthetic surface was worth a try, even though three outside experts determined the dirt track had not caused the 22 fatal injuries.

The change came with concerns, not to mention the high price tag.

At Keeneland, speed horses have had a distinct disadvantage on Polytrack, officials said. At Del Mar, the new surface has slowed horses down, resulting in longer race times.

But those problems have not happened at Arlington Park, officials said.

Of the winning horses this season, 31 percent were closers, who come from behind, while 27 percent were speed horses, who take the lead right away. In 66 percent of races, the winning margin has been two lengths or less, officials said.

In mid-August, a horse named Smack Daddy broke a dirt record set in the 1970s.

The Polytrack is a mix of sand, synthetic fibers, recycled rubber and wax. Below it are stones, drainage pipes and porous asphalt.

Because it absorbs water almost immediately, the 9-inch-deep surface isn't prone to mud or puddles the way a dirt track is, creating more consistent conditions.

"We used to miss workouts because of rain, but not anymore," said trainer Tony Granitz.

For the first time, Todd Pletcher, the nation's leading trainer, moved one of his stables, 46 horses, to Arlington Park, a testament to the track's appeal. Nationwide, Pletcher's horses have won more than $19 million this year.

In 2006, 4,045 horses ran in 561 races at Arlington Park. This year, 5,229 horses have run in 633 races. The average number of horses in a race has increased from7.2 to 8.3.

Kristufek said most bettors are pleased. With more horses to choose from, the odds of winning bigger purses increase.

Wagering on Arlington Park races has risen 15 percent since last year to $333 million as of Aug. 22, the highest level in several years. Attendance is expected to reach 800,000 by the season's end Sept. 16—a substantial jump from the 655,788 visitors to the park in 2006.

One fear about the Polytrack was that pieces of the surface would fly into the faces of jockeys. But the opposite has happened, said Rene Douglas Arlington Park's lead jockey. "It's beautiful," said Douglas, who has shaggy brown hair and large tattoos on his arms. "We're not getting as much stuff in our faces. Neither are the horses."

Joseph Lokanc Jr., the state's chief veterinarian, said horses are sustaining less serious injuries on the synthetic surface. The most common are soreness in the legs, from which horses often recover within a week.

Lokanc attributed the decrease in fatal injuries to the Polytrack attracting slightly higher-quality horses. But he said that in order to attract even better horses, Arlington Park would have to boost the size of its purses.

"Good horses go where the money is," said Lokanc, who wears a straw hat and brightly colored shirts.

Park officials want to install slot machines at the track or take a cut of casino earnings, but so far haven't been successful.

For now, they are soaking up the success of the new synthetic surface.

"It's not the silver bullet," Arnold said. "But it's within our control."

NANCY, thank you about the candle site. I, too, thought something was very wrong ???
I did just light up for EDGAR!

#######
LEE - so good to see you here! As our FOB pal, NANCY said, it may not change the situation, but there is so much goodness, hope, and comfort here with "the famblee"!
We ARE the BARBARO NATION!

LOTS OF KISSES & MINTS to you MISS HAWTY CREEK!!

#######
LYN G. - that is truly so sad to hear about "GEORGE, the CARROT MAN" @ Fair Hill. In my heart, I believe that you were meant to be there today, I know you were such a comforting presence.
I'm so glad George has Fair Hill as I can't think of a more comforting place for him to be at this time, there with the horses, and they truly will help him through this time, that I "know".

Anybody hear from MARIBEL? She and Hans are sooo in my heart and prayers. My own Dad underwent three open-heart surgeries (for bypass grafts) 1971, 1978, 1990, two of which were out of town, never easy, and I'm just so thinking of Maribel and Hans, keeping them in my prayers.

NIKITA - THE HORSE LOVING HUSKY: I hope dearest one that you and yours had a lovely hike to The Fort today and sweet slumbers tonight of running with Barbaro and The Heavenly Herd!

Holding hands, paws, hooves, feets, . . . . with all two-legged and four-legged FOBs. Hugs, prayers, peace to all . . . .

### Lee/Sophie,

God works in strange ways and things do happen for a reason. In 2000 our (my husband and I) business burned down due to vandals. Long story short, we both found new careers with less stress and mine lets me work from home and take my pup with me everywhere.

Prayers for you that this is a new chapter in your life with great rewards.

Amy,

Ideas for a gift for Edgar....since he is going to have to rest his foot how about a book or video. Perhaps a book about famous jockeys, Willie Shoemaker, etc. or about the history of horseracing in the U.S. Just ideas.

Thanks for taking this on,
Bonnie
