Barbaro Updates: 373

updates are now here.

Update 2396: I saw Mark Shuman this morning as he was preparing to ship in a string for the meet at Presque Isle Downs. He mentioned Xchanger was in on Monday in the Pennsylvania Derby: $1-Million Pennsylvania Derby Draws Large Field.

I also saw Michael Dickinson early this afternoon (I was walking from my motel to get a pizza, Michael was driving in to the next door hotel) and he invited me for "lunch" at 5 pm tomorrow at the races. I had to decline as I am running a horse I think. Oh well, anticipation is building for the new track.

Update 2395: An update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com, who appears to be mucking out as many stalls as me:

Friday morning (by this day I'm worn out) and I woke to an S.O.S. call from Tim.
Much of the help decided to take the morning off without telling anyone. So I went to the barn to fill in. Everyone calls me "Juanita" when I do this. Off I went to Fair Hill to do as many stalls as possible before 8:20. Everything went well, and everyone remained calm. After Andrea gave me a hug for rescuing her, we got down to work. Tim rode Real Lace first thing and she galloped well, unfortunately there was a loose horse on the track and it got her upset for the ride home. Tim was worried that she would tie up (muscles get tight and makes walking uncomfortable). We kept a close eye on her before and after her bath and she was fine. Next set was Tim on Who's Happy. She is so quiet around the barn. Butter of course would not melt in her mouth but she has a lot of equipment on to gallop. Tim is a very strong rider and I know that if there is a lot of equipment the horse is strong. They both came back calm and happy so everything must have been ok. As "Juanita" mucked away, Andrea got the next set ready. Gator Nation went out with Tim and Whip Smart went out with her rider. Whip Smart is so cute. Her ears curl up at the end like a little elf and when she looks straight at you she is irresistable. I am so lucky. The new report on Red Aspen is that she is back. "Juanita" mucked around her while she was loose in her stall and it is sure great to have her back. Time was running short for me so the last thing I did was to get Mass Romantic and Quick Quest ready for their training. Mass Romantic stood like a lady waiting for her rider and Quick Quest was his usual roudy self. He doesn't like to wait. Everything revolves around him and he is sure to let you know if he is unhappy. Before I left I called in my replacement Meghan. She was only too happy to be needed this morning. She was just in time to walk Whip Smart after her gallop. Both were of course as happy as clams!

Update 2394: A pleasant morning's work at Presque Isle Downs this morning. I had four to ride, each went nicely and seem to really enjoy the Tapeta surface. I chatted with another exercise rider who had not ridden on the surface before, but really liked it. I am excited to see how it performs tomorrow during our opening day (Seventy-eight entries mark Presque Isle debut). I mucked seven stalls, groomed six and did two up (i.e. put some standing bandages on their legs). I was going from 6 am to 11:45 am ... but not too bad getting everything done. Now I have to go and find a new phone!

Update 2393: The oldest surviving Kentucky Derby winner, Genuine Risk, is still doing well at the age of 30: Genuine Risk Doing Well at Newstead, excerpt:

Genuine Risk's day isn't all relaxation. "She's a very good babysitter," Connolly said. "Sometimes when we have a filly right off the track, we'll place them out in a field together. She's kind of a good influence on them; keeps them quiet and calm."

Although she is 30, Genuine Risk gets by on a routine diet. "Plus, we give her lots of carrots and as many peppermints as she can eat," Connolly said.

Saratoga's meet wraps up this weekend, on Saturday we have the Grade 1 Woodward with the current leading older horse Lawyer Ron: Pletcher holds pair of aces for Woodward Stakes, excerpt:

"Obviously, we'd love to see Lawyer Ron do as well as he did last time," Pletcher said. "The horse is more cooperative than he once was, but I don't know that in every scenario he'd relax as well as he did the other day. He benefited from the outside post and being in the clear."

This time around, Lawyer Ron will break from the rail under Pletcher's first-call rider, John Velazquez.

Hiya, FsOB! What a surprise and a treat! I had no idea that Genuine Risk was still alive. Sounds like she lives like a grand duchess, perhaps even an empress. Alex, I keep forgetting to ask if your dog is accompanying you on your travels? May Cavel be closed TODAY. Wishing each citizen of the Barbaro Nation a great, safe long weekend. Peace, RMH

#### To Angel Dee Mirich: You're welcome for your note of thanks. Hope your birthday celebrations and those of Susan E. (and Dr. Dea R., too!) extend through the coming weekend. ####

Strategy for Friday August 31

Before we know it, Congress will be back in session. We must continue to keep up the push for cosponsors for HR503 and S311. Hopefully, things will pick up very quickly and we will be getting further directions. It’s important that we are READY TO RALLY!!

In the meantime, please contact your 2 Senators and Representative in their DC and District offices and tell them that you are strongly opposed to horse slaughter. Request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter. We do not yet know how this will be presented in Congress so this message is very important.

List for Friday

Those who voted in support of the Ensign-Byrd Amendment Senate (2005) but have not yet cosponsored the bills

Lisa Murkowski - AK Phone: 202-224-6665 Fax: 202-224-5301

Saxby Chambliss – GA Phone: 202-224-3521 Fax: 202-224-0103

Kay Bailey Hutchison – TX Phone: 202-224-5922 Fax: 202-224-0776

Many thanks to those of you who visited with your legislators during the month of August. That is bound to make a tremendous difference in our efforts!!

We still need people to be involved with state groups. It has been proven to be the most effective way to get information out quickly when the need arises. If you can help, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net

As you know, pro slaughter people are very organized and are out spreading their message. We MUST be louder!

Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE….let it be heard!!

Thanks for all you do and have a great weekend and a wonderful and safe Labor Day!

Good Friday morning FOBs

TGIF!! and a holiday weekend which means for those who work the standard M-F week - you get an extra day to enjoy this weekend.

I'm sure many of you read Joe's blog yesterday (TB Friends). If so, you can see the big money these kill buyers are making from selling our horses to slaughter. I think it's time that we do everything in our power to put them out of business.

To those with family, pets, friends with health issues, my thoughts and prayers are with you. To those who are grieving, I pray for peace and comfort for you. To those who are celebrating an event - enjoy, enjoy!

Have a wonderful Friday everyone!

Good Morning Barbaro

Saw your beautiful star, knew you and your friends in heaven were doing okay and having fun, run free Barbaro...We love you and miss you!

Good Morning Family/Fans of Barbaro

Important words, call, fax, email...we will be heard. After reading Joe's blog yesterday, I am sickened and MAD. This has to stop, we all knew it is the greed of money that has ruled. But we FOBS have the hearts of gold, true compassion and love, and with that, we shall win.

Please remember the rescues, the fallen angels, the ones suffering, human or animal, the wildlife, and each other.

Have a lovely day.

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is really easy and helps animals in
need. Please pass this information on! The Animal Rescue Site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota
of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Again, please tell your friends and cross post!!!

###Renee, word is Rags worked out at Saratoga this week, not a clocked work, looked good. She's biting and charging at people in her stall, so her attitude is 100% Rags. Looking forward to seeing her race when she's ready.

Saw Street Sense work yesterday, he looked fine. Lawyer Ron, who's running tomorrow, looked positively beaming breezing under Cordero on a Sunday morning recently, like he owned the place. We'll see if he does tomorrow. May all the horses run safe worldwide.

Best wishes to all!

Posting for CJ, et. al...
Rhetorial Question Du Jour: ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES? Here is today's (Friday 8/31) extra National Target List from Humanity Against Horse Slaughter. These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact. Please don't attack this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR National Strategy, and the marching orders of your State group leader. It you aren't in a State group yet, and/or if your State has no group yet, please contact Stephanie Breaux. sbreaux1@verizon.net
Don't forget to mention S 311; ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy.
PLEASE NOTE: Per the national strategy - a HS ban may come up for a vote in the Senate and/or the House that is not a free-standing bill such as HR 503 / S 311. Therefore - and I quote from what Shelley A posted after checking with the powers that be in DC - "we have been asked to continue getting cosponsors but to also ask our legislators to support ANY bill that contains language to stop horse slaughter." This extra list is extra long because multiple district offices are given for each target. Do what you can.
If long distance charges are a problem, I suggest calling these DC 800 numbers and asking for the legislators by name; I'm sure their DC offices are staffed during the recess: 800-828-0498 800-459-1887 800-614-2803
Prior HS History - All of these Senators voted for the Ensign-Byrd Agriculture Appropriations Amendment in 2005 but have not yet cosponsored S. 311. Of all the Senators included in today's list only Sen. Murray co-sponsored S. 1915 last year.

Hey, family -

Happy Friday to all. My fella and I intend to celebrate the long weekend by working on the remodel. Oh, gee. Won't THAT be fun... And for once it's actually WARM on the Monterey Peninsula, which is NOT, NOT, NOT good for middle-aged lady dragging things out of loft. Perhaps I will lose about a hundred pounds as a result. (Yeah, right!)

###
jonna and Heart - HURRAH! Now, have a truly wonderful, sea-magic time.
###
Robyn Hoffmann - Thank you so much for your kind inquiry. Our friend, Doug, has a pig's valve newly attached to his heart, new fistulae, (connectors for his dialysis), some severely damaged spots in the brain as a result of a serious infection, and what appears to be an iron constitution. We've begun to refer to him as Rasputin. His memory and behavior are affected, which is worrying. But, where there is life, there is always hope, so we are - hopeful!
His wife, Mary Elise, is, as one may imagine, devastated, but returned to work last week - (she is a counsellor at a Catholic school in the Mission District of San Francisco) - which will serve her well. To have to focus on kids, and their problems, will serve to stabilize her. Work is a great blessing at these times... The older girls are fine, since at 27 and 24, their worlds are full of - them! Sean, the 14-year-old, is the one who has been with us frequently, and the one who is having the hardest time. However, we have had him tide-pooling, walking, watching classic movies, arguing politics, and helping with the garden. I'm a great believer in physical activity as a stress-reliever, and thus far, it seems to be working for Sean. I feel so bad for him, but he has adjusted, as kids do, with a grace one does not anticipate. I have to give the poor boy kudos just for tolerating spending so much time with ancient folk like us. Do you think he'll be scarred for life?
Anyway, Robyn, I can't tell you how grateful I am for your thinking of the Robertsons, and of us. We (John and I, I mean) are looking forward to a weekend without Sean, much as we love him. I just wish there were horseracing on! But we'll get by with baseball on the radio...
###
Kathy SC - Thinking of you and Mr. Cooper. Enjoy each day, and don't waste time feeling guilty. Lots of love...
###
I missed Maureen's birthday? I'm so sorry, and wish a splendid one!

To all horses running this weekend, safe trips and wings on your heels. (Especially Miss Hawty, of course, and the FsOB horses!)

Love and comfort to all in need, four-legged and two-legged, and have a Barbaro day, courage and kindness. Isn't this a wonderful place to be?

Posted by: Jean Nolan at August 31, 2007 7:33 PM

###Jean Nolan, prayers for your friend Doug and his family. It sounds as if Sean is coping and that is something in itself. I'm sure they are truly grateful for your friendship and help during all of this turmoil. Have a good weekend,

Judy

The Cattlemans Assn. said the slaughter houses put the horses down in a humane way. Talk about stupid. The only humane way to put an animal down is with its loved ones by them and get the shot and go peacefully. As Barbaro did. I sure wish we could get live pictures of the killings in the slaughter houses and get them plastered everywhere especially show them in the congress and senate. If I lived close I would try to sneak in and take video pictures but I am sure I would be arrested for trespassing and thrown in jail. well, it would be worth it. Maybe the FOBs would post my bail. This is off the subject but the only way we might fail is if we get fragmented. We must stick together. there is power in numbers. I just love Rags to Riches attitude.

Just a quick note to repeat, correctly this time, that Hawty Creek is enterd to run Sunday at Philadelphia Park in the 9th race. It's a $40,000 claiming race on the turf.

Lee/Sophie....Does that mean that Hawty's owners don't want her anymore and that other peeples can 'claim' her??? WHY wouldn't they want her anymore????

Lynne - I think Hawty's owners are assuming that no one will claim a horse that hasn't won her maiden yet for $40,000. Sometimes a claiming race is the only thing available to enter. But the owners do run the risk that someone will claim their horse.

Based on what Alex has said, I think Hawty's peeples luf her lots and probably don't want to lose her.

And Smokey Stover is going to run at Monmouth as well that day. It'll be interesting to see how he likes Monmouth - hopefully he will and i'll see him get a win on Breeder's Cup day!! :)

Angel Dee - Thank you, dear heart. The man is only 52 years old, which is a ridiculously young age to go through all this! And a marathon runner and health nut to boot, long before the kidney problems became an issue. It seems unfair, and this particular bout of difficulty has been going on since May! I posted here once before that there is always a family with whom you raise your kids, and the Robertsons are that family for us. So, we deeply appreciate the good thoughts on their behalf.

You are all wonderful, and I am profoundly grateful.

Lynne Brown,
I think Linda hit the nail on the head. This may be the only race available for her and they probably don't think anyone will claim her for $40,000. I'm hoping no one does too, everything I hear is that her owners really love her and don't want her claimed.

All,
I may not be here very much for the immediate future. I was told about an hour ago that I have been "temporarily" laid off from my job and sent home. I'm feeling pretty depressed right now, kind of feel like I've been kicked in the stomach. Don't mean to "cry" and "whine," just letting you all know why I might not respond to anyone or be here for awhile.

BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL HORSES all over the tv screen on my local news - seems there is a volunteer trail patrol of 75 people who regularly ride the trails in CT state parks. A wise and wonderful woman has organized them to assist the (understaffed) park rangers with finding lost people and other helpful tasks! So they are performing a public service while doing what they love...

SOPHIE (((((BIGGEST HUGS)))))) to you. If I were somewhere near I would bring you a rosebud. That feeling is horrid, but you must remember this - YOU are important and though I know how low you are feeling, please try to remember somewhere deep in your heart that perhaps there is a reason, a part of a plan, that you may not be aware of just now, something you are meant to do outside of your employment.

I wish you did not have to be away from us "the famblee" just now :(. Is there by chance a library close by you where you could get access to this site?

And please know you shall be in my prayers, too! Perhaps the employer will realize that they really do need you and call you back sooner than expected . . . .

HUGS TO YOU SOPHIE!

The exact same thing happened to me exactly 1 year ago--it's a really horrible feeling. I spent a lot of time watching Barbaro during this period and coming to TWR--it was very comforting. I hope you will be able to do the same.

Good Luck!

Jan,
Yea, it does feel like a big kick in the gut!

Lou Ann,
I feel torn between crying and throwing up. And don't worry, calling me Sophie is just fine. I am honored to be thought of with my dear Ruffian.

Jean Nolan,
I'm hoping the same thing. This is just a chance for me to be available for something else.

NancyinCT,
Yep! Not at all an insult!

Lindsnyc,
Already started updating the ol' resume! Why wait? LOL

Everyone,
Thank you for the words of comfort and love. I'm not leaving here, I'll be around and checking in on the doings. I may be quiet, but I'll be here. As so many of you have said, this will work out. There's a reason, I just don't know what it is yet. I love this family.

Happy Birthday Genuine Risk and many more.

I have my other little girl going Saturday at the Spa. Her name is Karakorum Elektra and she is in the 8th race. As always I ask for your prayers that she has a safe trip and hopefully ends up in the winners circle.

Take care all and have a great weekend.

Lee, I will be thinking of you. Stop in sometimes !

I haven't had a chance to read everything, but I have "perused."

It's time for my monthly Horsey Humor, so here goes:

All I need to know in life I learned from my horse:

When in doubt, run far, far away.
You can never have too many treats.
Passing gas in public is nothing to be ashamed of.
New shoes are an absolute necessity every 6 weeks.
Ignore cues. They're just a prompt to do more work.
Everyone loves a good, wet, slobbery kiss.
Never run when you can jog. Never jog when you can walk. And never walk when you can stand still.
Heaven is eating at least 10 hours a day... and then sleeping the rest.
Eat plenty of roughage.
Great legs and a nice rear will get you anywhere. Big, brown eyes help too.
When you want your way, stomp hard on the nearest foot.
In times of crisis, take a poop.
Act dumb when faced with a task you don't want to do.
Follow the herd. That way, you can't be singled out to take the blame.
A swift kick in the butt will get anyone's attention.
Love those who love you back, especially if they have something good to eat.

###
With my visit to Fair Hill on Sunday, anybody want me to give hugs to the horses? LaurieH, I already have you on the "list" for Luke...and some other's have already e-mailed me.

###
I was at the ranch today and I got to work on the pregnant horse...she is a joy to work on...she's sweet, gentle and has finally accepted me. I can't wait to see her on Monday along with the boys (who are acting possessive with Willow and me.).

Hiya, FsOB! I am so appalled that the Federal Appellate Court has still not ruled. Forgive me for being too cynical, but how soon will Cavel open its new "plant" in Canada? (Why is there so much irony that a place of death could be called a "plant", which is an organic, living entity?) Is that why this decision is being delayed so? I wish each of you a safe, long weekend to rechage the batteries, so to speak. Peace, RMH

### To Lee: I am so very sorry that you have been laid off. I am 52 yrs. old and that is one of my worst fears. Please know that we are all here for you at this difficult time. You are such a caring, articulate, and creative person. May you find a new role that capitalizes on your skillset!

How sad...As a native California person...our race tracks attract any where from 16,000 at Delmar to 1,600 at Bay Meadows. No wonder racing is such a fabulous thing on the EAST COAST. When you read stories about Barbaro, Ruffian,Genuine Risk and others it is very sad, and yet wonderful we have had SEBISCUT and LOST IN THE FOG. We do have horrible people who send our precious ones to kill houses. They should be listening to "Do Unto Others as You Would have Others Do Unto You".
Or am I wrong. Animals, children and inocents. What chance do they have if some of us do not step in for them.

CHAPTER UPDATE !!!

Chapter 24 of ONLY A MOMENT BEFORE...is now posted on the DB, under the BARBARO thread.

... Something made the stars shine brighter....something warm and true. Fire-shines coming through the window, in the dark of night were ever so much more than heavenly bodies scattered about the sky. They were a projection of the shines lighted by the Frens, once again, making a connection.

Stars and shines, pierce the darkness with fiery glow. Soft flickers far away, sprinkled across the sky, delight the eye, making the winter night, a little warmer with their light.
