Barbaro Updates 371

updates are now here.

Update 2385: FOBs have been contributing to this advertising campaign in the Thoroughbred Times. We are now looking at radio spots, here is one example: Bay Filly.

Update 2384: The first day of racing at Presque Isle Downs looks like it has decent sized fields. I would imagine the racing secretary's office is quite pleased. The meet opens with a $100,000 stakes race for 3yo fillies.

Update 2383: An interesting Bloodhorse chat, it seems plenty of horses are going to be shipping in to Presque Isle Downs in the next few days as they have a waiting list for stalls: Rose Mary Williams- Mountaineer Gaming.

Update 2382: A Kiaran McLaughlin barn visit for Today at Saratoga.

Bonnie Mizrahi, President of The Exceller Fund had this printed in the Letters to the Editor column: Yesterday's heroes serve to remind of today's needs, excerpt:

Recently another horse was rescued from a "kill" pen located not too far away from the storied track at Saratoga. This 9-year-old gelding had raced 96 times, notching up 17 wins. As a 3-year-old, he was classy enough to compete in the Wood Memorial. But instead of cheering fans celebrating his retirement, he stood sore and confused in a pen waiting for his final ride. This horse was pulled from that pen by Another Chance 4 Horses with help from the Fans of Barbaro.

Update 2381: Again the weather is gorgeous at Presque Isle Downs. The meet is getting closer and a few more horses have shipped in, but there is speculation that there are simply not enough horses here. We shall see how the entries are for saturday which are being taken as I type. Michael Dickinson is in town. It will be the first time a race track has installed his Tapeta surface, so we shall see how it works. He seemed pretty upbeat. I also saw a couple more familiar faces, which is nice, but we are getting people from many different racing jurisdictions I think. At the moment, if you count the jockeys and their agents and security, there seem to be more people on the backside than horses.

I mucked six stalls and then galloped three on the track. The track was great again although it felt a little firmer than it did on monday. A good morning's work.

Update 2380: Movement of horses in Australia still remains very restricted due to the outbreak of Equine Influenza. The breeding season has been moved forward a few days to enable resident mares and stallions to mate that do not require transportation. Racing may return to Victoria this weekend: Australian breeding season pushed forward, excerpt:

As of Monday, the number of confirmed or suspected cases of equine influenza had climbed to 450, the result of movement of horses from Centennial Park, where 163 of 166 tested positive. Pleasure and competition horses from Centennial Park moved all over the state before the lockdown, and there are now 80 properties under investigation.

In Victoria, the situation has eased slightly, with all horses that arrived in the last 14 days testing negative for the disease. Since no Thoroughbred in Victoria has tested positive, plans are for racing to resume at Caulfield racecourse this weekend. The statewide lockdown on movement of horses continues until Friday afternoon.

Hoiya, FsOB! The sun is shining brightly here on the banks of the Thames today. May each of you have a golden day and may the Appellate Court in IL rule to shut Cavel, once and forever! Peace, RMH

#### A belated birthday to Tim Woolley! And have many more!
To Laurie H.: You should videotape Montego's bath and put it on YouTube. Great to hear that Bart's hair is growing back. Nikita's shaved area on her face is almost filled in now. (She had hot spots three weeks ago, argh!)
To Jane: The suggestion to audiotape (which someone gave last PM) is a good one. The guy needs to get a life. Maybe you should play some LOUD music with a thumping base and see if he prefers that (OK, no, you are a good neighbour.) But maybe some nice Baroque music might be good "white noise". Is he the sort of person whom you might invite over for a cup of tea or a glass of lemonade in an effort to induce more neighbourly feelings on his part?
Where is our Martita these days? I miss her lyrical words of wisdom! ####

She is Queen of the track.
She runs with the boys….
Heck… she BEATs the boys.
One day her stride wasn’t right.
The Queen needed help….
There’s always talk around the racetrack.
Oh…it is the men who gossip the most.
Usually she ignores the crazy ranting and ravings that swirls around the barns:
the chiding and bragging about stud potential. (She had personally decided a long time ago, she wouldn’t give a dime for any of ‘em.)
But amongst the male bragging, there was also talk of greatness.
In revered hushed tones the talk was of
THE DOCTOR, the GREAT ONE, and the place to go.
If this doctor was good enough for THE GREAT ONE,
then by all means,
the Queen decided he would become her doctor as well.
She arrived at the place.
The ride was a little uncomfortable but at least by a limousine (fit for a Queen)
Throughout her visit, she never got to see THE DOCTOR.
Oh there were plenty of other doctors with stupid ideas. (EXCUSE ME…and just where do you think you are going to put that probe?)
Ahhh…. the loss of her dignity,
was enough to make the Queen blush and shudder at the thought.
All of this and still
THE DOCTOR was elusive.
Back at the race track
She knew she had to find a way back.
The only time she could think, really think was when she was on the track running.
A month went by and still she stewed thinking about THE DOCTOR.
Then one day, the air was cool and crisp, and her hoofs were burning up the track, and it came to her.
A very simple plan came to her.
Tomorrow..
As night fell
Her eyelids fluttered with the weight of sleep…
The Queen murmured…
FEVER

TOMORROW WE CELEBRATE...
Dr. Richardson's Birthday
Thanks!

Good Wednesday morning FOBs

Well, we're mid-way toward a holiday weekend.

Robyn, I agree with you about Cavel. The cruelty must stop.

What a serious situation for the horses in Australia. I hope and pray that the influenza doesn't spread any farther.

Let's keep up the pressure on our legislators to co-sponsor S.311 and H.R.503. Whatever method you use - call, fax, email, write, just continue to do it.

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is really easy and helps animals in
need. Please pass this information on! The Animal Rescue Site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota
of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Click to Feed the Animals - Rescue Site

Again, please tell your friends and cross post!!!

Strategy for Wednesday August 29

Before we know it, Congress will be back in session. It is very important for us to keep up the push to get cosponsors for HR503 and S311. Even though our Senators and Representatives have left DC for the month of August, their aides are still there and will be keeping tallies and reporting the will of the people.

In addition to the Daily Calling Lists, contact your 2 Senators and Representative in their DC and District offices and tell them that you are strongly opposed to horse slaughter. Request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter.

We still need people to be involved with state groups. It has been proven to be the most effective way to get information out quickly when the need arises. If you can help, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net

TIME IS RUNNING OUT TO MEET WITH YOUR LEGISLATORS IN THEIR DISTRICT OFFICES. …..One week left until they return to DC. There is no more effective way to get your message out than a face to face meeting. You have the best chance of meeting directly with them during this month. However, if that is not possible, please arrange a meeting with anyone in their office who is available too listen. It is usually easier to get appointments to meet with your legislators in groups of 3 or 4 constituents.
You can also attend events where your Senators may be speaking and talk to them. This is just as important as lobbying in DC, if not more so. Senators need to hear from those that they represent and who elect them into office.

As you know, pro slaughter people are very organized and are out spreading their message. We MUST be louder!

Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE….let it be heard!!

Thanks for all you do and have a great week!

Weds 8/29 - extra national target list (HAHS)

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES? Here is today's (Wednesday 8/29) extra National Target List from Humanity Against Horse Slaughter. These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact. Please don't attack this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR National Strategy, and the marching orders of your State group leader. It you aren’t in a State group, and/or if your State has no group yet, please contact Stephanie Breaux. sbreaux1@verizon.net

Don't forget to mention S 311; ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the national strategy - a HS ban may come up for a vote in the Senate and/or the House that is not a free-standing bill such as HR 503 / S 311. Therefore - and I quote from what Shelley A posted after checking with the powers that be in DC - "we have been asked to continue getting cosponsors but to also ask our legislators to support ANY bill that contains language to stop horse slaughter."

This extra list is extra long because multiple district offices are given for each target. Do what you can. If long distance charges are a problem, I suggest calling these DC 800 numbers and asking for the legislators by name; I'm sure their DC offices are staffed during the recess.

Returned a couple days ago from Saratoga where I enjoyed meeting Martita and Susan. Thanks to Susan for her help as my Chesapeake retriever Kaia got very sick on the way from Florida to Saratoga and spent the week at Susan's vet hooked up to iv's as her kidneys had pretty much shut down. She just turned 5 and we had to leave early, missing the Travers to get her home as she had to be on iv's in the van back to Florida. She is doing much better, she lost 16 pounds but her blood work has greatly improved, they think she might have leptospirosis, a bacteria which temporarily shuts down the kidneys and is causing her bleeding ulcer. Thanks to all who prayed for her on the thread Susan started, please keep her in your thoughts that she recovers as well as my other furkids, Nala and Over Enough.

Ready to get back to work calling and faxing for the big push in September to end the horrendous slaughter of our horses. Hope everyone will rally when the reps and senators return.

You have certainly been through the animal health mill this year, and we wish you an autumn in which everyone in your four-legged family is a pattern-card of vigor and well-being.
###

###
Angel Dee Mirich - I haven't said hello in forever, and I apologize. You are a bit like good weather - one takes you for granted while you are here! - and I shouldn't. Have a wonderful day, Mystical One!

Love and comfort to all in need, four-legged and two-legged, and have a Barbaro day, courage and kindness.

Hi Alex: How nice that you are taking us along on your journey. I had to laugh when I read about your blister from mucking. I board my horse at a barn where the staff does the mucking but I started a part time job last Saturday at a layup barn and mucking stalls is part of the job. I didn't do too bad mucking but sweeping the aisle (it is a large barn - 18 stalls and rubber flooring in the aisle) made for a bit of a blister so I know how you feel. Nothing like having clean stalls and a neat aisle, though...

Have a good day.

HSUS action alert seeks phone calls to Wendy's about their unrepentant and recalcitrant position to continue to use battery-farm raised eggs.

Bottom line: "Call Wendy's at 800-443-7266, ext. 2032, and ask it to at least meet Burger King's modest commitment on battery-cage eggs."

Alex,

Do you think Presque Isle Downs is ready for their big opening day? It's odd that more horses are not there by now. I read in this Talking Horses interview that there's a waiting list for the 500 stalls that are available this meet. She even mention Graham Motion as one of the trainers with allotted stalls!

By DRF STAFF

Yesterday’s heroes serve to remind of today’s needs

I enjoyed reading Steven Crist’s Aug. 12 column, “Fond farewell for two working-class heroes‚” that noted the passing of Gato Del Sol and the retirement of Funny Cide. It was interesting to see the correlation between horses who have done something for the fans of racing also being horses who are helping the lesser-known stars of racing.

The gesture extended by the Hancock family in bringing back Gato Del Sol from Europe stands as an inspiration to those working to save the lives of other horses cast off from the track or stud farm. And Sackatoga Stable has been a class act in its campaign of Funny Cide, and even more so in his retirement, which has been used to raise badly needed funds for Thoroughbred adoption and retirement.

Recently another horse was rescued from a “kill” pen located not too far away from the storied track at Saratoga.

And in a location very close to the track that saw Funny Cide’s last victory, the fate of another 9-year old gelding hung in the balance. He earned $99,000 the hard way – by running in the staggering number of 138 races. And staggering is about what he did in his last race at the same track that saw Funny Cide’s victory lap. With no one interested in purchasing him as a sport or pleasure-ride prospect, he was soon scheduled to go on that last ride. The Exceller Fund was able to secure his future, and he is now resting at a rehab farm and learning what it means to be a horse.

Stories like these occur almost every day with rescue volunteers at or near many of the lower-level tracks. While a lot of these horses may not be “famous,” I will bet dollars to donuts that many of them have probably completed a trifecta or superfecta ticket that paid quite handsomely. These are the horses who are the bread and butter of the everyday reality of this sport. These are the horses who reward the astute handicapper or even the lucky $2 player. These are the horses who deserve so much more than many of them get. That is why it gladdened my heart to read an article that celebrates the “blue collar” horses among the Kentucky Derby winners!

We will have a R.A.C.E. Fund table in the paddock area with silent auction and a chance to meet some of the jockeys. Try to stop by and say hello.

Update re Cavel Appeal - stay patient (ugh)

Letting you guys know that I heard from Gail (at the DB, onthebit1*) yesterday via Blackberry that her regular internet connection was wiped out by the recent Illinois storms and flooding. She expects to be up and running by today.

Since we are depending on her to be our "eyes and ears" on this - Just to be on the safe side and since I do have "roots" over at the good old 7th Circuit, I just phoned there and talked to a nice young lady who said, no ruling yet in Cavel case, and unfortunately, unlike the State Appellate Court system, the US Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit does NOT alert in advance that an opinion is to be issued. (The State reviewing courts are nice enough to send a postcard saying "An opinon will be released on ________" [usually a few days hence].)

So the bottom line is, we will have no official warning before the decision comes out.

Just a heads-up.

When we do know - news will be posted at this DB Thread

http://forums.prospero.com/alexbrown/messages?msg=13032.1

(go to the end for news - it's a looooong thread)

FAMBLEE......A 'SHORT' LADEEEEATTAFENS UPDATE:)

Everyone!!!! I got to see Mister & Rosie a few minutes this morning:) I am, as always, HIGH AS A KITE from thier visit:) I stopped by last evening to pick up some 'used to be white' blouses from Horsemommy....their well water has rust in it and maybe even some red clay dirt..and the filter to the water softener needed cleaning...only she didn't know that until after washing her white blouses...three of them...:( They became QUITE Ecru:( I got online to ask.com and it said to use lemon juice and salt...so, I mixed up almost a quart of Real Lemon and probably 2 C water...with at least 2 C Kosher salt...soaked overnight in a plastic bucket...and TAAAAAA-DAAAAAA the blouses are WHITE AS SNOW:)

So, when I took them back just now, I made SURE I had some baby carrots w/me....last night, I didn't bring any and I thought MISTER was going to have a HORSEY STROKE!!! Such 'nickering' I've never heard from him....I believe translated, it would be 'bleeped' from here!!! LOL! Anyway, this morning they saw me pulling in and boy oh boy!!! Horsedaddy helped me get them into a stall, they had been in their pasture....he wasn't so sure they would come to the electric fence...I had to bite my cheeks, Famblee...'cause no electric fence stops my two frens from coming to see me and THOSE CARROTS!!!! :) Horsedaddy said, 'boy, they sure know what THIS is about':)

So, though not there more than five minutes, it was still an EXCELLENT time and perhaps I will stop again this evening on my way home!!

The 'kids' are both 'dine&fandy'..it is just BEASTLY HOT AND HUMID here these past couple of days and only going to get worse til the weekend, when WHOOOOOOPIE....(not) it cools all the way down into the upper NINETIES:/

Hope you are all having a great day today..hope cooler than here in the No.CA.Foothills...:)

sandra price update on Rags to Riches from the DB

Trainer Todd Pletcher said Tuesday morning that Belmont Stakes winner Rags to Riches appeared to have recovered from the fever that caused him to cancel Monday's scheduled workout.

"Her temperature has been normal for the past 24 hours," he said. "She's bright, alert, and happy."

Tuesday afternoon he received the results of her blood work, which came back normal.

"We're going to put her back in light training [Wednesday] and continue to monitor her," Pletcher said. "We'll probably schedule a breeze this weekend and go from there."

Pletcher had been pointing Rags to Riches for the Ruffian at Belmont on Sept. 8. Another possible race is the Gazelle on Sept. 15.

The Grade 1 Ruffian would be Rags to Riches' first race against older fillies and mares. The Grade 1 Gazelle is for 3-year-old fillies.

Rags to Riches has not raced since edging Curlin in the Belmont Stakes on June 9. She missed the Coaching Club American Oaks on July 21 because her training was interrupted when she spiked a fever. Rags to Riches was given a thorough physical examination after she was pulled up at the start of a five-furlong work on July 22. She missed about a week of training and was not ready for the Alabama, but had been doing well for a month.

Hello To Everyone!

Alex, must be careful! It's not only horses that can injure, but rakes and tools do too! Thank you again for taking us with you on your journeys.

I haven't been around the last couple of days. Took a short mid-week vacation to Shennandoah National Park. Went up Monday and just got home. Best part of the whole trip was yesterday. They have guided trail rides there, so naturally, my fiance and I had to go! That was the most enjoyable one hour I've had in a long long time. My fiance had a little trouble, her legs aren't very long and she felt like she was going to fall off. We adjusted her stirrups and, voila, a great time by all! Afterwars, she and I spent some time just loving on one of the horses there and talking with the guides/barn folks. Wonderful, and in the winter, these horses go to the owner's farm where they have free reign of 200 acres and they just run and enjoy being horses. Just a side note, these horses are in wonderful shape and seem happy...even the 27 year old! Yep, 27 years old and still hauling tourists around! Could have stayed there forever.

Haven't been cheerleading much for the BB&B. So, now I'm at it again! LOL I'm inviting everyone to come over to the discussion under the Horse Rescue Issues folder. Bring your ideas, critiques, suggestions and love for the Horse. No money needed...yet! HA! You knew there was a plea in here somewhere right? Well, the only thing we're asking you to do with your money is to save some, that's all. Until we know what we're going to do, can you set aside $1/week? Pocket change in a jar? Pennies from heaven? (or the sidewalk!) If we all do this, in a year we'll have over $32,000 (for just the 600 of us at DelPark in April)!

Ok, enough cheerleading. Best of all, NO high kicks from me! LOL I wish each and all a wonderful evening.

Because the Horses can't say it I will for them:
Thank you!

No Horse left behind.

Miss Belga Bound led most of the way but faded to fourth I think. It was a safe race and all looked to come home safe. The winner, some consolation to you grey Horse lovers, was Criminologis ridden by Edgar Prado.

Good afternoon, all.

I have a small request and it's up you, of course. One of our K9 police officers died recently in an overheated car. The officer had a family emergency and he left the Officer "Bandit" in the car by accident. Sergeant Lovejoy is absolutely sick about the incident.

The sheriff's department is investigating the case, but a lot of us feel it was just a terrible accident.

I have signed a petition in support of Sergeant Lovejoy, because I don't believe he should be prosecuted for animal cruelty. The Arizona law specifically states that any cruelty case must be proved to include "intent" to injure or harm an animal. Sergeant had NO "intent" to harm his own dog.

If you would like to sign the petition of support, please help out this officer.

Thanks.

Can't sign the petition -- sorry. No excuse for leaving an animal in a hot car. Can't do it.

I've called Casey and Clinton and Murray and the Kentucky group today, and the National Call List. It's quiet now, but soon everyone will be back in business. Let's make sure they hear our voices loud and clear!

May tomorrow bring closure to Cavel on a permanent basis! Peace, RMH

Shelley and Debra

I'm with Elizabeth on this one. Cannot sign the petition regarding the Sgt. responsible for the death of his "partner" ..... the K9, Bandit.

I am totally clear ..... the Sgt. did not intend for this to happen.

I am also totally clear ........ you don't "just forget" about a life ........ canine or human ..... left in your car .... regardless of personal issues. IF a trained police officer cannot function under stressful situations .....
who can ????

I live within 25 minutes of where this happened ... I endure the brutality of Arizona's summers ..... I am in and out of my car probably 15 times a day ......... I don't even leave my water bottle in the car .... let alone a life !
