Barbaro Updates: 370

updates are now here.

Update 2379: One of my new duties as a groom, rider and whatever ... is to go back and feed in the evenings. As an exercise rider that's all you do, ride. Now things are different. No worries, it makes me appreciate more when I am riding. Anyway, the point of this missive was to say that when I was leaving feeding I noticed a horse van that looked familiar, Cooper's van, with Keith Cooper who had dropped off seven Fair Hill horses for trainer Chuck Lawrence. So now there are fellow Fair Hill people here, and we are planning an early dinner tomorrow evening.

Steve Haskin takes an early look at the Breeders' Cup Classic, which looks to have depth among 3yos and not so among older horses, with the possible exception of a European entry: Steve Haskin's BC Countdown: Classic Picture Looking Bright.

Update 2378: An update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com:

Tuesday 8/28
I walked in the barn this morning with Grandma staring at me. What a lovely animal she is. I stopped and gave her a huge hug and a kiss on her cheek. Just looking at these horses gives me a sense of peace. What is it about horses that can reach where nothing else can? Then I walked to the back of the barn to see Luke in the Porta Pad rolling and getting good and dirty. He loves to get dirty and is very hard to clean with all of his white. It is very good for the horses backs when they get down and roll. Most of the time they will shake afterwards which loosens their muscles. Mass Romantic was out at the track with Tim and upon her return seemed happy. Gator Nation was causing a stir in the barn by being fresh. He is such a funny boy. Whip Smart continues to be in good form after winning her last race and hopefully it won't be long before she is in the winner's circle again. I believe Who's Happy is going to run on Thursday at Penn National on the turf. It seems like a tough race because it is for horses that are three years old and up. There are some tough horses in there that have run against Red Aspen. Happy is in top form and is well in herself so we feel we need to give her a shot.
Who knows? Anything can happen.

Down on the farm: Off to ride Little Bubble Gum tonight. Timmy M'Boy went out with her last night to canter and jog. He was brilliant. I purchased him from a friend when he was a yearling and he has been with me ever since. When I worked for Dr. Fisher at Fair Hill I rode his mother and his Aunt and Tim (Woolley) used to ride his grandmother. Just looking at him brings me such joy. Timmy has spent a lot of time giving other horses a lead even when he was in training he would do this. Bubble Gum was of course as cooperative as ever following Timmy around like a little trouper!

Update 2377: NoBiz is back in the entries, this time at Delaware Park on saturday: Nobiz Like Shobiz tops Kent Field at Delaware Park.

Update 2376: Some quick observations from Presque Isle Downs this morning. Weather is gorgeous. My hands were not made for stall mucking (six today and another blister). Anyone shipping horses here (we only have about 120 on the grounds by the estimate of one agent) ... do yourself a favor and bring stall mats! The track was closed today (apparently a tuesday thing) ... I shedrowed two while the others just hand walked. Races start on saturday, they take entries for saturday's races tomorrow, it will be interesting to see how the races fill. Anyway, a short morning this morning as there was no training on the track.

Update 2375: Plans are now developing for the next starts for Street Sense and Hard Spun. Both will run one more time before meeting Curlin, Any Given Saturday and older horses in the Breeders' Cup (assuming Hard Spun is pointed for the Classic): Hard Spun headed to Kentucky Cup, excerpt:

Trainer Carl Nafzger mentioned the Turfway race as one of several possible targets for Street Sense's final Classic prep, along with the Super Derby Powered by Youbet.com (G2) and Massachusetts Handicap on September 22 and Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap (G2) on September 29.

"We all would like to hook Street Sense, but we'd rather do it at the Breeders' Cup," Porter said. "If he comes [to Turfway], I don't know where else we would go. I guess we'd just have to do battle with him there."

Hiya, FsOB! Marg, thanks for clarifying where the Presque Isle track is in comparison to Presque Isle, ME. I had never heard of a horse racing track that far up in northern New England, although I thought that there was one in NH, maybe? May the Appellate Court rule today to close Cavel permanently. Withing each of you a productive day! Peace, RMH

Would you like to win a Breyer Barbaro?

The fundraiser raffle is for Irish Spirit Farms and the Kansas 45+2 horses that the FOB's saved. Some of the Kansas horses are being taken care of by Jen Roberts of Irish Spirit Farms.

This week is your last chance to enter the raffle. The winner will receive a brand new in the box Breyer Barbaro! The drawing will be held on September 1.

You can go to www.irishspiritfarms.com to enter. Tickets are only $2.50 each.

To read more about the raffle go to the discussion board and look under the Barbaro category for the thread named Chance to Own Barbaro Breyer-FUNDRAISER.

This is a great way to raise money for a worthy cause and you get a Breyer Barbaro if you win!

#### Jonna, just read your comments from yesterday about Heart. You are NOT contagious! Regardless of their ailments, your dogs are blessed and so are you. They are blessed because they have been such good dogs, they were "sent" to you. Their destiny was to have whatever their ailments or diseases turn out to be. How much better for them to be sent to someone like you who will respect and love them through, what could be, a difficult journey rather than to wind up with someone uncaring or indifferent. You are blessed because you have the capacity to care and love them - you get it! It's people like you (and me, I confess, I'm speaking from personal experience) who, as Mrs. Jackson said, pay the price for love - but, it's a love as vital to us as the air we breath. Ultimately, what makes it bearable is knowing we made a difference in the lives of our animal friends who are unable to speak for themselves, who have honored us with their trust and love. There's no greater gift to give or receive. Hang in there - you WILL get to the ocean! I BELIEVE.......

Strategy for Tuesday August 28

Before we know it, Congress will be back in session. It is very important for us to keep up the push to get cosponsors for HR503 and S311. Even though our Senators and Representatives have left DC for the month of August, their aides are still there and will be keeping tallies and reporting the will of the people.

In addition to the Daily Calling Lists, contact your 2 Senators and Representative in their DC and District offices and tell them that you are strongly opposed to horse slaughter. Request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter.

We still need people to be involved with state groups. It has been proven to be the most effective way to get information out quickly when the need arises. If you can help, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net

TIME IS RUNNING OUT TO MEET WITH YOUR LEGISLATORS IN THEIR DISTRICT OFFICES. …..One week left until they return to DC. There is no more effective way to get your message out than a face to face meeting. You have the best chance of meeting directly with them during this month. However, if that is not possible, please arrange a meeting with anyone in their office who is available too listen. It is usually easier to get appointments to meet with your legislators in groups of 3 or 4 constituents.

You can also attend events where your Senators may be speaking and talk to them. This is just as important as lobbying in DC, if not more so. Senators need to hear from those that they represent and who elect them into office.

As you know, pro slaughter people are very organized and are out spreading their message. We MUST be louder!

Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE….let it be heard!!

Thanks for all you do and have a great week!

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is really easy and helps animals in
need. Please pass this information on! The Animal Rescue Site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota
of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Click to Feed the Animals - Rescue Site

I, too, am enjoying your journey, Alex. Such an interesting life you lead. Being with horses, working with them, around them, caring for them. Nothing like blisters from mucking those stalls, huh?

My part-time job has turned into something I am really enjoying, too. No work around horses, but I'm learning page-layout techniques and improving my skills (and I have FINALLY learned how to read a Thomas Brothers Guide ;o)

Best wishes to all, may all the runners return safely, happy journeys to those we lost this week, and a good day to all.

URGENT - PLEASE HELP

I'm still seeking a home for our lonely horse. He's about 15 hands, white, over 30 years old (yes, that's old), and 100% blind in both eyes. His best friend just left us, and poor Troy is all by himself. Most people think that being old and blind, Troy couldn't adapt to a new situation. I strongly disagree. He's very curious, reasonably intelligent and very very friendly. He may have an issue initially, but who wouldn't?? Once he and your companion horse are familiar with each other, I have no doubts that Troy would learn where the food is, and what his place in the herd is.

PLEASE take this horse. I'll transport him if needed, and I'll take him back if it doesn't work out.

------------------------------------------------

THIS HAS BEEN POSTED ON THE FORUM -

I have heard nothing back yet but I'm going to email them again. If nothing else, how does everyone feel about us at least taking this poor thing and giving him a peaceful end? I don't see anything good coming from the situation he is in :(

We do not have the facilities to house a horse that is blind unfortunately and at his age, I'm sure it's going to be hard for him to re-learn somewhere new.

If yes, I will contact May from Equihab to see if she can assist us with this situation as our trailer is out of commission for about 2 weeks and I don't think making this boy wait is in his best interest.

Let me know guys - this is breaking my heart, but I'd rather see him pass peacefully with people who will comfort him than end up blind and in a bad spot. Ugh :( At least we'll all know he is safe and at peace instead of starving and scared in some remote pasture or worse.

Today's Extra Tues 8/28 Nat'l Target List (HAHS)

Rhetorial Question Du Jour:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES? Here is today's (Tuesday 8/28) extra National Target List from Humanity Against Horse Slaughter. These legislators are targeted by other groups on specific days, so our voices add to the impact. Please don't attack this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR National Strategy, and the marching orders of your State group leader. It you arent in a State group, and/or if your State has no group yet, please contact Stephanie Breaux, sbreaux1@verizon.net

Don't forget to mention HR 503; ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy.

PLEASE NOTE: Per the national strategy - a HS ban may come up for a vote in the Senate and/or the House that is not a free-standing bill such as HR 503 / S 311. Therefore - and I quote from what Shelley A posted after checking with the powers that be in DC - "we have been asked to continue getting cosponsors but to also ask our legislators to support ANY bill that contains language to stop horse slaughter."

This extra list is extra long because multiple district offices are given for each target. Do what you can. If long distance charges are a problem, I suggest calling these DC 800 numbers and asking for the legislators by name; I'm sure their DC offices are staffed during the recess.

800-828-0498

800-459-1887

800-614-2803

Prior HS History - All the Representatives on this list are new to Congress this session so have no prior history re slaughter ban - EXCEPT - Rep. Nick Lampson from Texas cosponsored an earlier version of the AHSPA (HR 857) during the 108th Congress. I have posted each of their votes on HR 249 rhis session (restoring former protection to wild horses & burros) as I feel this info is important to know when talking to their aides. NOTE - each Rep's vote on HR 249 is shown after his/her name - (Y) for Yes, (N) for No, and (NV) for Not Voting.

Alex,

I am enjoying your vagabond blogging immensely! As an avid gardener, backpacker and cyclist - with delicate skin, I've learned a few tricks about blisters and I thought I'd share with you.

Treatment for blisters:

Most blisters caused by friction or minor burns do not require a doctor's care. New skin will form underneath the affected area and the fluid is simply absorbed. You can soothe ordinary blisters with vitamin E ointment or an aloe-based cream. Also, if you catch the problem in time you can build a shield around the blister using a product from Dr. Scholl's called Moleskin. I use two layers, cutting a hole larger than the blister in the first layer and then adding the second layer over that. This takes the pressure and friction off the affected spot. I don't recommend this for fully developed blisters, though - just for rub spots that are beginning to make themselves felt - prevention of blisters and catching them early like this has saved me many hours/miles of agony.

Do not puncture a blister unless it is large, painful, or likely to be further irritated. The fluid filled blister keeps the underlying skin clean which prevents infection and promotes healing.

If you have to pop it:
Use a sterilized needle or razor blade (to sterilize it, put the point or edge in a flame until it is red hot, or rinse it in alcohol).
Wash the area thoroughly, then make a small hole and gently squeeze out the clear fluid.
Apply a dab of an antibiotic ointment with polymixin B and/or bacitracin to help protect against infection. Use caution with ointments that have neomycin in them because they are more likely to cause an allergic reaction.
If the fluid is white or yellow, the blister is infected and needs medical attention.
IMPORTANT: Do not remove the skin over a broken blister. The new skin underneath needs this protective cover.
Look for signs of infection to develop. These include pus drainage, red or warm skin surrounding the blister or red streaks leading away from the blister.

Prevention:

Wear work gloves! A small investment can save you a lot of skin. Your hands will still toughen up, but they?ll do it gradually if you keep at it. It?s the jobs you're new to, such as shoveling horse manure or pitching straw, and those tools you use only occasionally, that are notorious for finding those remaining tender spots in otherwise work-hardened hands. Next time you try out new tools or unaccustomed labor, put the Moleskin on early wherever you notice hot spots and, voila! no blisters!

There - "Blisters 101" from someone who has lived through it... more times than I like to admit.

Best wishes for a successful book! Keep safe. You're seeing more of my country than I have. I'm a little jealous as I sit in my office, but living it vicariously through you takes the "edge" off somewhat.

FYI and heads-up.

As if we didn't have enough problems! (excerpt follows)

Toxic Weed Hoary Alyssum Found in Drought-Affected Pastures
by: Press Release
August 24 2007, Article # 10249

The 2007 growing season's drought conditions are causing challenges for anyone who handles plants or animals. Horse owners are no exception, and to a list of concerns including a shortage of hay and lack of pasture growth they need to add awareness of hoary alyssum, a weed that is poisonous to horses.

Hoary alyssum is found across the northeastern and north central United States and Canada. A member of the mustard family, it produces small white flowers and can grow one to three feet tall. Grayish-green "hairs" cover the stems, leaves, and seed pods. It is well-adapted to dry conditions and grows in drought-stressed, over-grazed pastures.

"This season's drought conditions are definitely favoring certain plants over other plants," said Ben Bartlett, Michigan State University (MSU) Extension U.P. dairy and livestock educator. "This year, plants that can get by on less moisture are doing great because they are getting enough moisture and there's less competition."

Horse owners need to learn to identify hoary alyssum and the signs of its toxicity in their animals. Bartlett warns that those who may feel that they don't have to worry because they feed supplemental hay and grain should think again.

Horses on pasture, even if they receive hay and grain, might graze on hoary alyssum if they find it in their fields. Though it is not preferred by most horses, they will nibble on it when other plants are not abundant due to overgrazing or drought.

"People need to keep in mind that animals being fed hay still like green things to chew on," Bartlett said. "You may be feeding supplemental feed and think they are getting enough, but animals will walk around and nibble on green things."

Toxic symptoms in horses range from depression to stocking up (swelling in the lower legs), fever, and diarrhea.

Minimizing problems with hoary alyssum and other weeds begins with good pasture establishment and controlled grazing. When the weed is found in an established pasture, the herbicides that are labeled for its control will also affect forage legumes. If drought conditions have left few other plants in the pasture, removing the animals for the remainder of the growing season is an option. But what about next year?

"If the pasture has not been overgrazed, then the other plants should be able to outcompete hoary alyssum next year, as they did in the past," Bartlett says.

Updates on le Crise du Jour:

The transmission in my van is slip sliding all over the place....Shoot me now.

Heart's aspirations of both mass and fluid seemed to STRONGLY indicate (hang onto that word, children) nothing more than a big ole reaction to TRAUMA. The kids must have whacked her onto the ramp sides, or a tree, or god knows what...she was quiet and good as a mouse, my beautiful Heart...we had to do 4 sticks to get what we came for....it all looked like cherry KoolAid which is what you want to see......not that dense, dark blood we aspirated from Jessie's tumor...so.

A little sigh of relief there....the blood will take a little overnight to Michigan and maybe I'll hear back before I leave...Maybe I don't even WANT to hear back.

My friend Deb and her daughter, aged 5, (also named Jessie) are SURE that this is a reaction to trauma and nothing else. Get out the cold packs....

SO. I love youse guys who have written me. I wore my Barbaro hat all over the place today. It keeps my brain from leaking out my ears on some days, I'll tell ya...I cherish your words. I cherish the big colt who brought us together.

I am moving forward, peeking through my fingers like I do when I watch thoroughbreds...I really want to be tough enough to trust and leave my dogs in My Friends good auspices...TRUST::::so not a big trait in Jonna's head...that goes back to being 4. God never intended little children to be betrayed at 4. and more you don't need to know....

but know that I love you FoBs for writing. It means the world to me. I hug you like Renee hugs: Muah....I know exactly, precisely how that sounds and feels, my dears, and I bless you all...(Renee: there's also the oft-used, EEEE-uah.)

URGENT - PLEASE READ - THIS IS NOT A JOKE!!!!!

I just want to warn you of a wretched new computer virus - it's called the "Key-Stroke virus" and, if your computer becomes infected, it records every key-stroke you make - including financial info used to make on-line purchases and/or donations!!!!!

I discovered this when I attempted to access my bank account online and it wouldn't accept my password....when I tried to use the option of resetting my password, it rejected my account information, so of course I called the Wachovia help center. It seems that Wachovia was "notified" that my computer had this virus and, in effect, shut down any access to my account by disabling my password, account # and debit card #....THANKS BE TO GOD! I can ill afford to lose what little money I have left...

SO MY WARNING TO YOU, ON THE ADVICE OF THE WACHOVIA I.T. GURU, is that you set your virus protection program to scan your computer at least 4 times a day!

Please share this information with everyone you know - it's a monumental disaster in the making!

Hello Robyn Hoffman!

Bart is doing great!! He is busy growing his fur back that he was previously so busy pulling out! And, he seems to be filling out ever so slightly.

I haven't given him any baby food for a few days because it got to the point that he was eating only the baby food! Today he shared a couple of potato chips with me!

Montego is getting to know her stable mates. She has really become friends with Hattie, a little Haflinger mare that, rumor has it, has quite an attitude!

Tonight I bought shampoo for Montego, Bright and White! It's supposed to bring out the highlights in the lighter colored horses! (Alex, did you just roll your eyes?!)

I'm thinking about (attempting) to give her a bath this weekend. I figure if it takes me three days, I won't miss any work!

Thank you for asking Robyn. Bart is genuine Love, at it's best. As far as Montego in my life, I still find myself asking if this is a dream...

Good Evening FOB's, I have been a loyal follower and occassional poster since May 06, today one of my worst nightmare's came true. I am a breeder of many Champion Goldens and cherished family pets. My neighbor of 30 years, who has been a royal pain for that long called the local dog officer on me as my dogs barked for 10 minutes!!!!! meanwhile another neighbor's dog whom he adores was left out all of last night and barked until 5 am!!!! I run my life around this guy, keeping everything quiet, is their any justice? My dogs are my life......any good FOB thoughts appreciated. This, added to a miriad of other personal problems have me pretty upset tonight. Still missing our dear Bobby in the biggest way......

I wish I could win the Texas lottery and be able to use it for our rescue horses and dogs. However, I am a Texas retired teacher who hasnt had a cost of living raise since 2001 and they say it might be 2009. So I do what I can but I figure every bit adds up. How is Snickers? Hello Jane,

Why are some people the "way they are?" I'm sorry Jane, I don't have an answer for you, please let me think about this, okay?

Neighbor issues are never fun or easy and sometimes they can get out of hand. There are some people that you just can't please.

Were your dogs barking at your neighbor? Was the neighbor doing anything to provoke the dogs? The reason I ask, is that maybe you could kindly invite your neighbor to "meet" your dogs.

Explain that the dogs are unfamiliar with them and that perhaps, no guarantee, the dogs would quite down after they get to know the neighbors.

And while introducing them, tell some funny or even embarrassing moments that you have had with the dogs. This will let the neighbors know that it is not always easy, and we don't always have our dignity, when we have animals in our life.

Hopefully too, this will relax your neighbors and slowly fill their heart with understanding.

If this sounds silly, or out of the question, I apologize. I'm not familiar with your circumstance with the neighbor but I thought I would mention it.

Good luck to you Jane and thank you for coming to us. We ARE here. We DO listen. We CARE.

Good night Jane.

Hi Kathy S.,

OMG! As far as Steve's home, I never realized that mud and muck were so heavy!

Kathy, I caught myself looking out over the neighborhood and absorbing the sight. It was just like being in the middle of the 10:00 news.

Ambulances, fire trucks, Red Cross vans, police, heavy equipment, you name it, it was there. Except, there were no children. No dogs. Anywhere.

The weather was perfect on Saturday which was a blessing. They were offering free tetanus and hepatitis shots. I know I'm on the edge, if not over the limit, of needing a tetanus, but I didn't get one anyway. (I chickened out!) I'm an insulin dependent diabetic and I chicken out of a vaccination!!!

Steve lives in a split level home and the lower level is ruined. The upper level did not have any mud/muck or water on it.

It was very difficult work. But the look on Steve and his wife, Erin's faces when we showed up....as they say, "Priceless!"

Thank you Kathy for asking. I have asked Steve not to leave us out of the loop with his "home recovery". He assured me that he would not leave us out.

Have a GREAT time on vacation!!! It sounds wonderful! I'll let you know how the Montego bath adventure goes! Wish me luck, please!!

#### Thank you too, Laurie H, for kind thoughts. Yes, neighbors can be something else. Somehow I don't think that this man would ever want to meet or hear about my dogs. He hits golf balls every day one foot from out property line, often coming into my yard......over the fence, a real choking danger to dogs. He waits until I leave (only for 2 hours each day.) Simply to provoke I think. At any rate, this too shall pass I hope. One would think after 30 years he would know the situation. I needed a hug here tonight and I sure got it.......thank you dearest friends......the Barbaro effect!!!

Hi Jane,
My dog friend had a similar problem. One neighbor swore it was her 2 Dalmations that were barking--they were not the culpits. She got a voice activated tape recorder with as long playing a tape as she could find. When the animal control officer came, she was able to show him that they just made a few barks when another area dog started to bark. Her dogs quieted down quickly. She was in the clear. Maybe something like that could help you, too. Just a thought. I'm sorry you are having to deal with this.
