Barbaro Updates: 358

updates are now here.

Update 2313: As noted earlier today, Lava Man is running on sunday in the Pacific Classic (he won the race last year): Lava Man Could Stir Up Emotions at Del Mar, excerpt:

Shaping up to be an exciting race with a possible 13-horse field, including the Bruce Headley-trained Arson Squad, the Pacific Classic will be run three days after a poker tournament benefit for Lava Man's groom, Noe Garcia, who recently lost his arm in an automobile accident.

"It has been a rough month with Noe, and then with Merv Griffin passing the other day, but we hope Sunday brings it all together," said Dennis O'Neill, who assists his brother, Doug, with his stable. "It will be a very emotional day with Lava Man running, and Noe is supposed to come out (for the race), so that will even make it more meaningful."

O'Neill said there is a goal of raising at least $100,000 at the poker tournament to assist Garcia's recovery and rehabilitation, as well as helping the groom obtain a prosthetic arm.

ESPN2 will be covering this race, 7 - 8 pm east coast time.

Off to the races: (Penn National.)

Update 2312: An update from Penny at timwoolleyracing.com (nice to hear Grandma is returning):

How much better does it get? To train in such a beautiful place and to have such nice weather is such a blessing. We are so lucky. We were at the barn last night until 9:30 with a great blacksmith. Sonny Brodhas came to look at Two of Wands to make sure her feet looked good. He has some really great suggestions. Having a great blacksmith is just one more piece of the puzzle. Tim and I picked his brain like vulchers! He answered all of our questions and tried to explain things in terms we could understand. He also said that he only wished he was as good as some people think he is. To us he was pretty incredible. Here is a person who has taken a lifetime to study his art and he does his very best to shoe a horse without interfering with the horses natural motion. What a humble person. It will be an interesting thing to see if this helps her. She can be a bit tight behind and now hopefully we can keep her more comfortable. Fortunately for him (and unfortunately for me) he does not live in the area. He drove down from Saratoga just to look at a few of Tim's horses. I could have asked him questions all night although I'm sure my brain could not have retained all of the information.

I stopped by the barn this morning to visit the horses. Michelle had just returned from the track on Gator Nation. He put in a huge leap on the way home and then just put his head down and walked the rest of the way like a gentleman. Tim was getting off of Whip Smart. What a nice ride. She is a gem. We are so excited because Grandma is shipping back up to us today after a short lay up at Equivine. She is the big grey filly by Smoke Glacken. What a character she is. I know Meghan will be excited to see her, uncle Tim hasn't told her yet that she's coming in. Also shipping in with Grandma is Real Lace's little sister. I have not seen her yet but carrot man George says that she is absolutely gorgeous. Mass Romantic was tacked up waiting to go out . What an exciting morning at Double Trouble. I will update you some more when Tim calls me!

Update 2311: Another gorgeous morning this morning at Penn National. This weather is in marked contrast to the steamy weather we suffered last week for sure! Today I had nine to ride, seven at the track and two at the farm. The track opens at 6 am, there is a large round pen close to the track which allows you to ride a jogger before the track opens. This is beginning to become my routine, one or two in the pen before training on the track. The morning at the track went without incident. One of the horses I rode pulled pretty hard for the mile and a half gallop, but the trainer (Tim) warned me so I was riding good and short. Other than that the horses were straightforward. The two on the farm were also good. They are just learning their job but are progressing quite well. All in all, a nice morning's work.

Update 2310: The Travers, traditionally the major 3yo race outside of the Triple Crown series, looks like it is being run without some of the major three year olds. Any Given Saturday, Hard Spun and Curlin are all missing, which will likely make Street Sense the prohibitive favorite: Field Shapes up for Aug. 25 Travers.

The Pacific Classic, run at Del Mar this weekend, is Lava Man's next objective, and may include the 3yo Tiago: Tiago's Pacific status remains undecided

Good Tuesday morning FOBs,

Let's continue our phone campaign to end horse slaughter. Even though Congress is taking a break, the horse slaughterers are not. The horses need us to speak for them.

Have a wonderful day!!

LOOKING FOR ARTISTS AND WRITERS

Looking for writers and artists to create some new fliers to send to sens and reps, the fliers to have a sketch or beautiful picture with a poem, story somthing from the heart about how horses have contributed through the years. This can be Barbaro, your horse, any horse or horses. Ending with asking for support for S311/HR503.

I am working on one and so far Anna has agreed to do one.

Hiya, FsOB! It's a bright and sunny AM here on the banks of the Thames. Ms. Nikita is in her "post position" on the sofa in the office, looking down at the street and the river just beyond. May each of you have a golden day! RMH

#### To Harriette and Martita: Please see Joan Dillon's post dated stamped 081/4/07 (12:11 PM). Your writings are so poetic, they would be a great addition to the sample of fliers.
To Martita: Profound words last PM.
To Laurie H: I sure hope that the fateful soup splash didn't damage your computer's monitor! Please tell Bart to tread carefully!
To Bobbie B.: Sounds like Snickers' eye surgery went well. May her recovery continue on a smooth course. ####

Strategy for Tuesday August 14

It is important for us to keep working on getting cosponsors for HR503 and S311. Even though our Senators and Representatives have left DC for the month of August, their aides are still there and will be keeping tallies and reporting the will of the people.

In addition to the Daily Calling Lists, please contact your 2 Senators and Representative in their DC and District offices and tell them that you are strongly opposed to horse slaughter and request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter.

We still need people to be involved with state groups. It has been proven to be the most effective way to get information out quickly when the need arises. If you can help, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net

All legislators will be working out of their District offices for the month of August. Now is the time to call for an appointment and meet with them in person. There is no more effective way to get your message out than a face to face meeting. You have the best chance of meeting directly with them during this month. However, if that is not possible, please arrange a meeting with their District Manager. Some of you may want to form groups for these meetings. It is usually easier to get appointments to meet with your legislators in groups of 3 or 4 constituents.
You can also attend events where your Senators may be speaking and talk to them. This is just as important as lobbying in DC, if not more so. Senators need to hear from those that they represent and who elect them into office.

As you know, pro slaughter people are very organized and are out spreading their message. We MUST be louder!

Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE….let it be heard!!

Thanks for all you do and have a great week!

CHAPTER UPDATE !!!

... The other horses; Warrior, Cat, The Two, Brother, Cause, Glitterer, Bull, Zil, Key, Law, Point, Vow, Retreat, Humor, Show, Minister, Wolf, Treasure, and Saint, all leaped into the wind, each of the same conviction, that it was they who had a great appointment with destiny.

They chased it with gallant hearts. Their riders tasted horse-sweat and chewed the manes of their mounts. Through sheer grit and fierce determination the thundering herd pushed on. They survived the crushing entry of g-force-like velocity, bumping and shoving for position and pace. In the center of the pack, the Young Prince endured. As Egger confidently guided him through the fray, the hearts of Love urged them on. Was it they who made the difference? For he knew the wind was with him.

...from Chapters 20 & 21 ONLY A MOMENT BEFORE... now posted on the DB under the BARBARO thread.

###Joan, feel free to use any of this story. I will also cross post to your DB offer with some words from the white mare:

MORE WORDS FROM THE WHITE MARE....(concerning the tears of the FOBs) :

... They are doing good in a sad and often cruel world. They must be strong to fight it. There is an enemy who will use their own hearts against them. It is a strategy that causes them to recoil and lose heart. Evil uses despair to paralyze those who would thwart it.
Let each tear serve to water their resolve. ...

Have a wonderful day Dear Hearts. I hope you enjoy the story. I will continue to write and post it as you wish.

Stu,
Snickers is doing well. Of course, they won't know for some time whether or not the surgery was a success. (She won't ever see perfectly, but if all continues to go well, she should be able to see her boy Willie just fine.) Poor Willie whinnied the entire time while she was in surgery, but now that they've been reunited, he's better.

Good morning FOBs, Alex, all... thanks for posting the piece about the Travers... the shift to the Breeders Cup that leaves the jewel of the Saratoga meet without most of the big contenders this year. But we saw why last year... BC = Horse of the year... the Eclipse voting is blinkered to look at one race so the timing of the Travers is a little too soon, or a little too late to fit in another race, like Goldilocks and the porridge.

Street Sense is a great horse, and the Travers is a great event... this horse really sizzles for his fans, and it will be great to see Street Sense run again at Saratoga if all goes well. Sightseeing and CP West, great too. Perhaps some day the Eclipse voters will look at more than one race out of the 2007 campaign and we will once again see more of the major players at the Travers. Until then, we'll love the ones we're with!

Hello everyone - Please remember Claudia, the Habitat for Horses mare that is having surgery September 5th. Claudia has a thread on the DB - we are trying to raise the money to help with her surgery. She is only 3 - she was left in a field with a broken leg by her owners after they moved away. She spent at least 5 months there all alone. Her leg is horribly twisted from being broken and not repaired, but HFH has found a vet that has done this type of surgery with good results.

If you are unable to help with Claudia's surgery by contributing financially, will you please keep her in your prayers for a positive outcome. Thank you.

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is really easy and helps animals in
need. Please pass this information on! The Animal Rescue Site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota
of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Again, please tell your friends and cross post!!!

Tuesday 8/14 - extra national target list (HAHS)

Rhetorical Question Du Jour:
ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES?

Here is today's (Tuesday 8/14) extra National Target List from Humanity Against Horse Slaughter. Everyone on these lists is being targeted on a given day by other groups, so our voices add to the impact. Please don't attack this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR National Strategy, and the marching orders of your State group leader. And please join a State group, or form one if your State doesn't already have one. Contact Stephanie, sbreaux1@verizon.net

Prior HS history of today’s targets: All on today's list cosponsored HR 503 last session but have not signed up to cosponsor HR 503 this session.

Don't forget to mention HR 503; ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy. PLEASE NOTE: Per the national strategy - a HS ban may come up for a vote in the Senate and/or the House that is not a freestanding bill such as HR 503 / S 311. Therefore - and I quote from what Shelley A posted after checking with the powers that be in DC -

"we have been asked to continue getting cosponsors but to also ask our legislators to support ANY bill that contains language to stop horse slaughter."

This extra list is extra long because multiple district offices are given for each target. Do what you can. If long distance charges are a problem, I suggest calling these DC 800 numbers and asking for the legislators by name; I'm sure their DC offices are staffed during the recess.

Amen to that, my sisters and brothers. Have a very good, very kind day: I will be kindly calling later, Migraine has come to call...high pressure systems never help, so they? LOVE: J

I haven't seen the new Underdog movie yet, despite the fact that my kids keep asking me if they can see it. "Can we see it?" they say. "Please? Please? Please? Please?" You get the idea.

But now, there's a real-life Underdog. Perry, an eight-year old mastiff in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was instrumental in saving the lives of her owners after a house fire broke out. Perry made noise, got the humans out of bed, then went back into the house (possibly to save more people), and is now suffering lung damage and pneumonia as a result of smoke inhalation.

Her condition is precarious, partly because her owners have run out of money to care for her. In a world where people massed around Barbaro, the ill-fated race horse, I wonder if they'll rally for Perry. Donations, according to the piece, can be mailed or dropped off to Emergency Veterinary Clinic, 300 Gosling Road, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

******FOR EVERYONE*****

I JUST CAME UP WITH A GREAT IDEA TO GET OUR MESSAGE ACROSS AND IN FRONT OF THE CANDIDATES DURING THE DEMOCRATIC DEBATE THIS COMING SUNDAY, AUGUST 19 ON "THIS WEEK WITH GEORGE STEPHANOPOLOUS" ... IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU ARE DEMOCRATIC OR REPUBLICAN ... THE ISSUE IS S311 AND THE HOUSE BILL.

HERE'S THE LINK TO THE ARTICLE ABOUT THE DEBATE AND YOU CAN SUBMIT YOUR QUESTIONS EITHER VIDEO VIDEO OR TEXT EMAIL. IF ENOUGH PEOPLE SEND THE 'SAME' QUESTION, IT JUST MIGHT GET ASKED ON THIS NATIONALLY TELEVISED DEBATE ... THERE IS STRENGTH IN NUMBERS ...

Here's the link to the article and just follow the directions:
http://ugv.abcnews.go.com/category.aspx?uid=366803&r=1&c=5

And if you need an "example" of the question to ask, here's what I just emailed them:

What is your position on S 311, the Horse Slaughter Protection Act? Indicate whether or not you have co-sponsored this bill, and if you have not, please explain why you continue to refrain from supporting this bill? Our beloved horses are continuing to be slaughtered here in the U.S. in Illinois, as a matter of fact, and their meat is then shipped abroad for human consumption overseas in Belgium, France and Japan. How can you support this barbaric practice, and even more importantly, how can you turn a blind eye and deaf ear to what is happening?"

###########

Obviously, you can all formulate your own thoughts from your expertise and knowledge, but just make sure it's in the form of a question that isn't too wordy and drawn-out or they might discard it. Let's all try this and see if we can put some pressure on these candidates to talk about this issue!! It's definitely worth a shot!!

AFTERNOON REPOST

Strategy for Tuesday August 14

It is important for us to keep working on getting cosponsors for HR503 and S311. Even though our Senators and Representatives have left DC for the month of August, their aides are still there and will be keeping tallies and reporting the will of the people.

List of Senators (Cosponsored S.1915 Last Year)

Phone: 202-224-2621
Fax: 202-224-0238
Aide: Andrew Rowe

Fax: 202-228-2183
Aide: Colin Mueller

Evan Bayh D-IN
Phone: 202-224-5623

Aide: Patrick Hayes is handling it for Chris Murray

James DeMint - SC

Aide: Stacy Dillard

Mel Martinez - FL
Phone: 202-224-3041

Aide: Frank Walker

Hillary Rodham Clinton - NY

Fax : 202-228-0282
Aide: Trevor Dean

Senator Charles Schumer - NY
Phone: 202-224-6542
Fax : 202-228-3027

So sorry about Perry. These animals give us all 150% love and we owe the same to them. Will send some money for Claudia. 5 months in a field alone with a broken leg. Peoples cruelty continue to amaze me. also, thinking of Snickers and looking forward to her seeing willie. Poor little Willie thought he had been abondoned by his mom. It is 100 degrees here in West Texas and Chief and Kate (rescue mutts) are laying in front of the a/c asleep. I have had one for 10 years and the other for almost 14. They came from very abusive homes and they have given me much more than I have given them. Love them to pieces, even Chief, who hated the whols world and everyone in it when I first got him. Took me 3 years to convince him the whole world isnt bad. I think we can win Clinton over to our side with enough calls.

Let's all try this and see if we can put some pressure on these candidates to talk about this issue!! We are being given a free forum right now and we need to 'seize the moment' and take advantage of it. I suggest that we continue to do this for all of the upcoming debates, both Democratic and Republican, where we are asked to submit our questions to the candidates! We'll get there, believe me, we will!!

It's definitely worth a shot!! We have nothing to lose and everything to gain!! Personally speaking, I will NOT support any candidate who has not become a co-sponsor for this bill, regardless of their political stripe. But if we can get our issue and questions out there, it might make a major impact and save the lives of our horses from the bloodied hands of slaughter.

Hiya, FsOB! Please see Joan Dillon's request for good stories or art work for the anti-slaughter fliers. (I hope that Harriette and Martita saw my note to them early this AM - such poetic wordsmiths! Your words would be ideal for this venture.) I think that Linnie's suggestion (timestamped at 10:48 PM) to submit questions to ABC News for inclusion in the debate with Democratic contenders for the Presidential nomination is superb! Right on, Linnie! I'll mark my calendar to do so this Friday. Peace, RMH

#### To Otherlyn: Your saga is such a delight.
To Kelly: I am so glad that Willie is calmer after being reunited with Snickers. How stressful their separation must've been. Is her eye covered right now?
Amen to Lou Ann: Dr. Richardson's birthday should go on the official calendar of The Barbaro Nation, right up there with our national holiday of 04/29. Can our national anthem be "My Old KY Home"? (Pretty please?)
To Jonna: That quote is a very apt one. We never know what another person may be having to deal with on any given day. Good luck with your migraine, may it abate soon, Jonna.
To Elizabetha and Rosemarie: Very sad news about the hero dog "perry", up in NH. What a trouper he was for his family.

Safe keeping for all in harm's way in Hawaii, believe me I KNOW about hurricanes.

And I know this is hard to believe ... but right now we have a tropical storm that has developed in the Atlantic strong enough to be given an "official name" ...

DEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Need I say more as to the determination and strength of this namesake! But, I also know that "Dean" has great compassion, gentleness and understanding and regard for preservation of life, so I'm confident that Tropical Storm "Dean" will "go quietly into that good night" and keep everyone safe from harm ...
###################

And speaking of "Dean" this month's $29 on the 29th Campaign for "Let's Lick Laminitis" is in honor of a very special birthday boy ... so please give from the heart and soul for this man who gave so much of his life, his time, his expertise and his love for Barbaro.

If you are donating by check, please make sure that it gets in the mail by August 20 and indicate in the Memo Line of the check if you are donating to "Friends of New Bolton", The Barbaro Fund, or Laminitis Research Fund, and also include a separate note indicating that this "donation" is "In honor of Dr. ----------- Birthday!! If you are donating online, just indicate this info as directed. Nancy in CT has blue-linked all of this for all of you ...

Thanks for all you do and have a great day!
Shelley and Debra

Hi All,

The leading edge of the storm is just coming on shore at South Point. Could take another hour or two to get to Kona. So far, so good. Weatherman says this is the proverbial calm before the storm. Hopefully it will be just a little wind and rain. Thanks for your continued well wishes.
