Barbaro Updates: 357

updates are now here.

Update 2309: Curlin is not running in the Travers. He is being pointed for the Jockey Club, which will be his first start against older horses, and then the Breeders' Cup: Curlin to use Jockey Club Gold Cup as Breeders' Cup prep.

Update 2308: An article that looks at some of the troubles horseracing faces and what it is trying to do to deal with the issues: Horse racing's black eye.

Things are looking good for the Saratoga meet: Saratoga Going Strong After Third Week of Meet. When I saw the title of the article I was hoping for more about the horses running at the meet, not just statistics on handle attendance and races run.

Update 2307: Hawty Creek was fourth this afternoon at Philadelphia Park. The first two were clear, Hawty was close for third.

An update from Penny at Timwoolleyracing.com:

Beautiful cool morning today with little humidity. Tim reports that he saw a heron landing in the pond as he rode by. Quick Quest has come out of his race fine. We had him scoped after the race and he has a little infection which can be cleared up easily. This time of year with the heat and humidity infections can come up quickly. There are greater numbers of eye infections as well this time of year. Of course we are disappointed with the way some of our horses are running lately but this is the roller coaster ride of being a trainer. Red Aspen winning was such a high spot and then to have her come out of the race with an eye injury was devastating. Trainers are readily humbled! Tim had a great time looking at babies at the Saratoga Sale but we were outbid on both of the babies we were most interested in. At least Saratoga is a great place to be. What a beautiful place to watch really nice horses train and race. Saturday I stopped by Fair Hill to watch some of the horses train. Who's Happy toted Robbie Walsh around the track. She was quite a handful. Tim reports today that he galloped her a strong mile and a half with a german martingale. Anyway, its fun to watch the ladies give these guys such a hard time. Michelle took out Nautical Agent and Fortuna to the track and reported that both were moving well.

Update 2306: Having spent a lovely weekend in the Fair Hill area it was an early morning start to return to Penn National ... I left at 3 am. Getting to the track at 6, the weather was beautiful. I had ten to ride today, seven at the racetrack and three on the farm. The morning started off relatively quickly, the first six sets were done by 8:15 am. The remaining four, three on the farm, took me through to about 10:30 am. All in all a nice mornings work at Penn National.

Hawty Creek is on the fourth today at Philadelphia Park. I spoke to Dave (her trainer / owner) this morning and he thinks she should run well. There is one tough horse in there but she should run close. Lets hope so!

Update 2305: Mandura is establishing himself as the best horse in Europe with another win this weekend: MANDURO BAGS MAROIS PRIZE , excerpt:

"He's a proper superstar, we were always confident coming into the race and he's proved it today," Harley later told At The Races.

"I have spoken to the owner and he is over the moon. Although we were very confident before the race it is a relief he has gone and proven himself again.

"We are going to the Arc. It's very much part of the plan - that's the next port of call. It's possible we may go to the Breeders' Cup."

Good morning all

I have had a lot of catching up to do as I have been offline for over a week (computer virus) and I was very surprised to see a pristine new page at this time of the day.

We had an interesting event at Ascot on Saturday with Dubai Free Shergar Cup, which is an international team event between four teams: UK, Ireland, Europe and Rest of the World. It was really good racing and fascinating to see the different styles of jockeys from different parts of the globe - just a pity there were no Americans. The Rest of the World won with a good run at the end (two Aussies and a Japanese) with Hugh Bowman (Australian) taking the honours as top rider. British girl, Hayley Turner did really well to come second (we have hardly any female jockeys). A good time was had by all.

Just a word on Manduro - rated the top horse in the world at the moment. His trainer Andre Fabre says he may go for the Breeders' Cup Classic after the Arc ( when asked what qualities a horse needs to perform well on dirt, he said "gas" ) and he also mentioned that it is easier to train 5 year olds than 3 year olds. Interesting. I enoyed this article:

Impeccable win in Marois keeps Manduro on top of the world

Have a good week, everyone.

Good Monday morning FOBs

As we start a new week, let's keep our focus on putting every bit of energy we have into the fight against horse slaughter. Sometimes it seems as though nobody is listening, but we never know what is going on behind the scenes. Ask yourself this - who is going to do it if we don't?

Have a wonderful day everyone!

In addition to the Daily Calling Lists, please contact your 2 Senators and Representative in their DC and District offices and tell them that you are strongly opposed to horse slaughter and request they support and VOTE YES for ANY legislative measure that will ban horse slaughter and export for slaughter.

We still need people to be involved with state groups. It has been proven to be the most effective way to get information out quickly when the need arises. If you can help, contact sbreaux1@verizon.net

All legislators will be working out of their District offices for the month of August. Now is the time to call for an appointment and meet with them in person. There is no more effective way to get your message out than a face to face meeting. You have the best chance of meeting directly with them during this month. However, if that is not possible, please arrange a meeting with their District Manager. Some of you may want to form groups for these meetings. It is usually easier to get appointments to meet with your legislators in groups of 3 or 4 constituents.

You can also attend events where your Senators may be speaking and talk to them. This is just as important as lobbying in DC, if not more so. Senators need to hear from those that they represent and who elect them into office.

As you know, pro slaughter people are very organized and are out spreading their message. We MUST be louder!

Remember, WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE….let it be heard!!

Thanks for all you do and have a great week!

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is really easy and helps animals in
need. Please pass this information on! The Animal Rescue Site is having
trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota
of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Click to Feed the Animals - Rescue Site

Again, please tell your friends and cross post!!!

Liz - I am all excited about Manduro now. I looked at your article after Alex's, and saw he truly is a black horse! He is the most handsome thing! I am surprised to see a horse the color of Ruffian. He is as black and shiny as a stick of licorice.

Simply gorgeous. I hope he will be in the Breeder's Cup so I can see his gleaming body run for myself. OOH, but he is fantastic, and can fly as well!

There is a thread on the DB saying that Pres. Bush vetoed the anti-slaughter bill.

What are they talking about? I think someone is confused, right?

I was going to respond, but I thought it would be better if someone with facts stepped in to straighten it out.......any takers?

Just guessing here but I think it means that Bush vetoed the AG bill due to budget issues. This was expected. He can't veto a bill that hasn't come up for a vote yet re: HB503 and SB311.

Anyone love Ruffian and is feeling wealthy? I get a lot of books from Half.com who sell remainder/used/excess and often out of print books.
I put Robert Clafin's RUFFIAN, QUEEN OF THE FILLIES--which was written in 1976--on my Wish List...

Well, guess what: someone has one they want to sell: it's hardcover and in Very Good condition and altho it was list-priced at $6.95, he/she wants $238.87 for the book...It is very hard to find, that I know...but JEST A LITTLE OUTA MY LEAGUE price wise....

So anyone? Lyn Lifshin??? You can find it on half.com a subsidiary on Ebay....mazeltov: jonna

Posted by: jonnagrey at August 13, 2007 2:24 PM

OOPS: author of rare Ruffian book is is EDWARD Clafin....not enough coffee in the bloddstream yet....

Posted by: jonnagrey at August 13, 2007 2:25 PM

Jonna - That was one of the books I was looking to buy for quite some years. It took time and patience to continually go onto ebay/half.com and a whole host of other sites to see if there were any copies available within a normal budget. I finally found one on Amazon, at the overwheming price of $30.00, but it was more acceptable than the $75-300 range I have previously seen throughout my search.

I am glad I finally ordered my Claflin, Queen book. It is a very thin skinny volume,a quick read but it is the first that was written about Lyn Lifshin's Licorice daughter. I had to have it, and now it sits alongside my Burning From the Start, and all my Barbaro, Barbara D. Livingston, anything horse books. It indeed has more pictures than the Burning book, so I was pleasantly surprised.

Burning is alot more in depth and has so much more information. I have not yet bought the Nack Ruffian book. I know alot of folks said it was really good, so that will probably be my next purchase.

ps- if you do decide to buy, be careful-alot of the copies are saying they are hardback, but instead are oblong paperback editions put out the following year. (that is if you are looking for a true first edition hardback edition as I was)

Hope anyone that can attend will make plans. What a GREAT way of meeting other FOBs and doing something good for the horses.

GREAT Idea Debra!!!!

The President did NOT veto the Ag Bill. He has been threatening all along to veto it was for to much money......not because of the horse language in the bill.

This Bill will go to the Senate when they return in September and then go to the President.

WELCOME NEW FAN OF BARBARO BABY

MARLEY formerly known as PATCHES had her baby last night. We only had two nights of mare watching. Laurie at Ponytailes knows her stuff, she predicted the birth was near without knowing when MARLEY was bred. Good job LAURIE!!!

Since there was not enough time to try and help with the Baby Pool to help defry Vet bills, we are all having a BABY SHOWER and naming contest. The "Fans of Barbaro" saved Marley and now have the privilege of naming this beautiful dainty little Princess.

SHELLEY A. -

My understanding was he has threatened to Veto the "FARM BILL," not our bill in particular.

Thank you for clearing that up.

I think you might be right. They are diverting our attention from what we need to be doing.
Best to keep focused and stay on course.

The Senate is not even there this month so nothing will be happening until they return.

I have confirmed my information with D.C. this morning just to make sure I didn't miss something. The answer I got was "Where would information like that come from??" (with a little chuckle) LOL

### Shelley or anybody,

I believe that our bill S311 for the Sen. came
out of committee, sometime in late May?, without
amendments and the Sponsors are holding it to
acquire 60+ co-sponsors before putting it on the calendar to get to a floor vote.
My Senator's aide, Burr,N.C., tells me the bill is
still in committee.
Who is correct here?
Thanks for the info anybody. BB

Posted by: Bobbie B. at August 13, 2007 3:48 PM

## or was it the house bill 503 that came out of committee?

Posted by: Bobbie B. at August 13, 2007 3:49 PM

I believe it was the house bill that came out of committee without amendments and i think that it should be on its' way to the senate. What a system lol

Posted by: Joanne Frank at August 13, 2007 3:58 PM

Bobbie B

S311 did pass through the Senate committee with no amendments. There is no magic number of cosponsors to get it to the floor but they do not want to put it on the floor until they are certain it has a chance for success.
The 60 cosponsors would assure it be passed without debate. That is not likely to happen.

However, it looks like S311 will not be a stand alone bill. That means it will probably be attached to something else. No definite decisions have been made yet and we probably won't know more until September when Congress reconvenes.

That's why we have been asked to continue getting cosponsors but to also ask our legislators to support ANY bill that contains language to stop horse slaughter.

Hope that helps.

please pray for both horses. They need our prayers.

Monday 8/13 - Today's extra national target list (HAHS)

RHETORICAL QUESTION DU JOUR:

ANY EXTRA TIME/ENERGY/PASSION FOR THE HORSES? Here is today's (Monday 8/13) extra National Target List from Humanity Against Horse Slaughter. Everyone on these lists is being targeted on a given day by other groups, so our voices add to the impact. Please don't attack this list until AFTER you have followed today's ABR National Strategy, and the marching orders of your State group leader. And please join a State group, or form one if your State doesn't already have one. Contact Stephanie, sbreaux1@verizon.net

Prior HS history of today’s targets: These Senators voted for the Ensign-Byrd Agriculture Appropriations Amendment in 2005 but have not cosponsored S 311 this year. Of all the Senators on today's list, only Sen. Nelson from Florida cosponsored the AHSPA in the past (S 1915 last session).

Don't forget to mention S 311; ask them to cosponsor - and please use the Talking Points from the ABR Strategy. This extra list is extra long today because multiple district offices are given for each target. Do what you can. If long distance charges are a problem, I suggest calling these DC 800 numbers and asking for the legislators by name; I'm sure their DC offices are staffed during the recess.

Good Morning All,
I guess following this thread, I've become much more sensitive to the plight of all animmals going to slaughter.
Don't know if any of you saw the Saturday night NBC News clip on 'Squeaky'.
Squeaky's mom (a pig) was on a truck headed to slaughter. While on the truck, she gave birth! Squeaky actually fell off the truck. Someone rescued him with the umbilical cord still attached!
He is being bottle fed & will be given to some sort of place for care (not for pork chops!). I suppose the story was meant to be a 'filler' on a not too busy TV news night.
But following the stories of the rescues on the DB, I found this story tinged with sadness. It made me even more conscious that all animals deserve to be treated with dignity & care. The fact that a cow, or a pig, is meant to be slaughtered in our society does not mean they should be treated any less humanely.
Barbaro, you have no idea how much we have learned because of you.

PLEASE REMEMBER -- THIS IS THE TIME TO CALL. The first year of this session will soon come to an end. We need to make sure we are calling, writing, faxing. I've completed my local calls, and my extra Senator and Congressmen calls (Compelling Clinton, Convincing Casey ,etc). And I'll be calling all day. There are horses lined up in double deckers at Cavel, folks. They are waiting to die. What are you waiting for? Please call.

One little schtickele I wanted to stress:

Per the national strategy people, it is possible that a HS ban may come up for a vote in the Senate and/or the House that is not a freestanding bill such as HR 503 / S 311. Therefore - and I quote from what Shelley A posted after checking with the powers that be in DC -

"we have been asked to continue getting cosponsors but to also ask our legislators to support ANY bill that contains language to stop horse slaughter."

ALL,

This must be the times of sick horses! There is a horse, her name is Claudia, who needs to have surgery on her leg so she can walk. The horse's knee got broken in a pasture and the folks who owned this horse left it unattended, moved away and left Claudia alone in the pasture to fend for herself. So, now it has grown into a very lame leg but can be fixed. The vet who would do it is taking a discount and has fixed another horses leg that is now straight.

If you're interested in helping Claudia get her surgery please go to the discussion board and look for HABITAT FOR HORSES - CLAUDIA. I think it is under "horses rescued". I'll check that.

I cannot in my wildest dreams imagine doing that to any animal - sick!

Bless the little Claudia, may she finally be healed!

HI FOBS....

On the discussion boards we have a thread for CLAUDIA. She is a beautiful mare rescued and being cared for by HABITAT FOR HORSES. Her owners abandoned her when they moved and left her to fend for herself. She will be having a titanium plate placed to fix her leg.

Please if you can help her visit :

####### I relish Harriette Brillianthawk's Cherokee Devotionals that I find in my emailbox every day. Wanted to share this one, for August 13, 2007 with you all:

There are right things to say and right ways of saying them, but many times we hit on a touchy subject because we were talking when we should
have been listening. A casual remark that doesn’t mean much to us can strike a nerve in someone else. Even when we disregard other people’s feelings by saying they are too sensitive---it may be that we are too ni ge ya ta hv na-----careless or callous. Over the years we may learn how to make friends and how to keep them---and most of it is done by controlling our tongues. No matter how close we are to someone, it does not give us the right to say anything we choose.

You must not hurt anybody or do harm to anyone.

Here is the second letter:
We, as Friends of Barbaro and friends of all horses, stand with the proud owners of Kentucky Derby winners mentioned in the following letter published in the Louisville Courier-Journal on May 5. We join them in urging Congress to end the slaughtering of American horses for human consumption abroad.
_______________________________________________________________________

Derby winners' owners: End 'cruel and brutal' practice
As proud owners of Kentucky Derby winners, we urge Congress to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S 311/HR 503) to end the horrific practice of transporting and slaughtering horses for human consumption abroad.
While we have been fortunate to have bred, raised and raced world-class horses, we know we have a special responsibility to all horses, champion or not.
No horse should face the cruel and brutal end that slaughter entails.
Horses taken to slaughter are often purchased by killer-buyers; many others are stolen from their owners.
Still others have been surrendered for sale by owners unaware that their beloved animal will end up in the slaughterhouse.
Transport conditions are so bad that even the Department of Agriculture has condemned them.
Horses bound for transport are crammed into crowded trailers, unprotected from heat or cold and deprived of food, water and exercise for up to 28 hours. Many do not survive. Those who do are often too sick to stand.
Abused, terrified and desperate, they are then beaten and electrocuted to death.
Recent court rulings have temporarily shut down the three horse slaughter plants in the U.S., but foreign companies are now exporting American horses to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada.
Without a federal ban, they will continue to transport horses across our borders for slaughter and might soon be able to relocate their slaughterhouses to other states within the U.S.
The American Horse Slaughter Protection Act will close these loopholes and put down slaughter for good.
For our horses and our humanity, we ask that this bill be passed.
This letter was submitted on behalf of the following owners:

Hiya, FsOB! It's good to be back. I have been simply exhausted since the middle of last week. I am pleased to report that Ms. Nikita, the horse-loving Husky, is doing much better since seeing the vet last week due to "hot spots".

On Friday PM, Brent & I went to a great equine charity event in Salem, CT. This event also helped to support organic farming efforts in Eastern CT. The event was held at the Mitchell Farm Equine Center, under huge tents, in a driving rain storm. It was

#### To Bobbie B.: I am sorry to read that Princess Briana is sick. I sure hope that Snickers' eye surgery was successful and quick.
To Laurie H.: I have been away for a few days. How is Mr. Bart doing? Any weight gain or hair growth to report? ####

CHAPTER UPDATE !!!

... What great fun this was...running...running for the roses. The quick pace was invigorating. It pumped fuel and resolve into him. With every stride, he gained strength, and will. It came, not only from somewhere inside of himself, but from the greatness and determination of the horses and men running with him.

These horses felt it too. He was sure of it. The joy of running, as one great swift herd, came from a place deep in the desires of their hearts. Totally aside from the business at hand, the heart of each great racer, gratefully received the gift.

...From ONLY A MOMENT BEFORE...Chap 20 & 21, now posted on the DB, under the BARBARO thread, in loving tribute, and in hope of finding a place to heal.

They are only a thought away.

Missing him...missing them all.

COTTON BLOSSOM, one of my favorites, is being retired...it was obvious that something was very wrong in her race at Saratoga. HOWEVER, I need someone who knows much more than I do about the world of racing to explain why she is being SOLD...is is because she has to retire because of her injury, and therefore is no longer a meal ticket????? I guess you can see I'm upset about this...

"Dogwood Stable has retired Acorn Stakes (G1) winner Cotton Blossom due to injuries she sustained in the Darley Test Stakes (G1) on August 4 at Saratoga Race Course.

The three-year-old Broken Vow filly out of For Dixie, by Dixieland Band, will be offered in the Fasig-Tipton November selected mixed sale on November 4 through consignor Three Chimneys Farm.

“Cotton Blossom was shipped to Kentucky after she exhibited lameness following the [Test], and ultrasounds there have confirmed that there is significant damage in the sesamoidian ligaments, along with bone chips in the ankle,” Dogwood President Cot Campbell said. “Her future in racing would be very bleak, and it is clearly indicated that she be retired.”

Cotton Blossom won the Acorn by one length on June 9 at Belmont Park over eventual Test winner Dream Rush. She also won the 2006 Schuylerville Stakes (G3) and ’07 Florida Oaks and finished second in the Spinaway Stakes (G1) and third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Dogwood purchased Cotton Blossom for $210,000 from consignor Warrendale Sales, agent, in the 2005 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July selected yearling sale." (from Thoroughbred Times)

Hello everyone - I know we are all so busy - working hard to raise awareness for the horses. But it just saddens me to see The Fog's candles at an all time low - he only has 96 burning. I had to come and ask you all to light some for him. I know the candles are only a symbol - but they do show we remember....Please light some candles for the awesome spirit of The Fog.

Love you forever horse.

One of the horses welcomed to Equine Heaven today, Murph Mill Miner, is a horse that Boxcar ran against twice. This hits very close to home and is very sad. It brings to mind how easily it can be your own horse.

From me and Mr. Boxcar...Rest in peace Murph Mill Miner.

Wow Alex, I think you retired to even more work! I almost fell off my chair today at work when I checked in and saw you had 10 to ride! Remember the good old days with Tim when you had maybe 4?

Equine Heaven,

That was quite a report today!

Nancy,

I don't know much about this, but sometimes owners only own race horses and not broadmares, which I bet will be Cotton's next life.

Alex,

Thanks for the great articles.

Yall remember Snickers with a little foal Willie
that the FOBs rescued.
Well Snickers is blind in one eye and had eye surgery today on the other. She came through fine, and seems to recognize a finger coming at her so they know she can see a little. But it will take weeks of healing, so please keep her in your prayers.
Little Willie, a nursing foal, had to be separated from mom for her surgery , and they say he didn't stop calling although the doc gave him a little sedative for calmness.Apparently he became hoarse!
I would say the horse is hoarse but...bad pun!
But all in all, it went so well. I want Snickers to be able to see her baby before he grows to the age to leave her.

Shelley and Debra

Hello Robyn Hoffman, Kathy S. and everyone,

Thank you for asking about Bart. He is busy growing his fur back (it's growing in as a smokey gray marble type) very pretty!

Today I picked up some soup and brought it back to the office. I put some on the lid of the bowl and placed it on the desk for Bart after it cooled.

Well, I'm on the computer and all of a sudden "splash!", all over the monitor, phone, calculator, everything! Bart had slapped his paw onto the lid and into the cooled soup. Then, with his soup-splattered foot, he walks across a report, staining the paper and now it won't lie flat!

But, he's happy. He doesn't mind his injections, LOVES his Fancy Feast, gets lots of Kathy pats, lies in the sun on the top of my desk, enjoys head rubs from the drivers and adores his baby food!

Thank you again for asking! He's still so thin but he is happy. I love him so much...

Please remember Claudia, the Habitat for Horses mare that is having surgery September 5th. There is a thread on the DB - we are trying to raise the money to help with her surgery. She is only 3 - she was left in a field by her owners after they moved away. She spent at least 5 months there all alone. Her leg is horribly twisted from being broken and not repaired, but HFH has found a vet that has done this type of surgery with good results.

If you can't help financially with her surgery, please keep her in your prayers. Thank you.
