Barbaro Updates: 356
updates are now here.
Update 2304: Rags to Riches worked again this morning at Saratoga and it is now confirmed that she will not be running in the Alabama: Belmont Stakes winner Rags to Riches to miss Alabama, excerpt:
"We missed a little too much time, and I didn't want to push the issue," Pletcher said. "We'll focus on one race before the Breeders' Cup [Distaff (G1)].
"I would say it's likely to be the Ruffian. By the time September 8 rolls around, she's going to be raring to go. We'll use the Gazelle if we feel like we need the extra week or the track's not to our satisfaction, or something like that."
Update 2303: Merv Griffin, entertainer and racehorse owner (Stevie Wonderboy etc.) has died: Spokeswoman: 'Jeopardy' inventor Merv Griffin dies at 82.

Update 2301: Jambalaya came flying late to win the Arlington Million off a very slow pace. The Tin Man ran a great race to finish second, a very game effort.
Update 2300: Honey Ryder looked to not travel well at all in the Beverly D. and was never in contention. Royal Highness just got up late to win by a nose over Irridescence who ran a terrific race for her South African connections.
Update 2299: Racing is currently on ABC. A nice win by Shamdinan in the Secretariat, just besting Red Giant, the Virginia Derby winner. Shamdinan was purchased from the Agha Khan and this was his first race in America. He likely relished the slightly softer turf and it will be interesting to see how he adapts to the usually firmer turf courses in the US.
Update 2298: Due to the yielding turf conditions at Arlington, After Market is scratched, leaving The Tin Man as the morning line favorite: After Market Withdrawn from Arlington Million, excerpt:
"Unfortunately, the weather in Chicago the previous week was so rainy, the turf course hasn't completely dried out yet," said After Market's trainer John Shirreffs, speaking over the phone while still in Chicago. "The horse is doing great. He's just fantastic, but Mr. Wygod recommended that we don't run him on soft ground. I've been out on the course every day since I've been here. It's drying out, but it's not quite fast enough yet."
Update 2297: A simply gorgeous morning this morning at Penn National. Little to no humidity, bright skies, lovely. I rode eight this morning, six at the track and two at the farm. The six at the track went nicely, some I am starting to ride for the second and third time ... but there are others I am still getting on that I have not ridden before. Everyone seems in a good mood, likely to do with the better weather and its the weekend. A couple of the horses were also a little fresher for the weather. After the track I went over to the farm and that was not quite incident free ... I really need to remember to tighten my girth! The filly I rode got to bronking a little ... and leaping ... nothing too crazy except the saddle slipped up over her withers and the pads slipped back to her butt! Needless to say, as soon as could get her steadied a little I hopped off! No harm done, once I fixed the tack I got back on and we did what we were supposed to do. An exciting end to my first week at Penn National. Heading back to the Fair Hill area for the weekend and then return here early monday morning.
Don't forget racing on ABC this afternoon, 4 - 6 pm. It will include a segment from Dr. Richardson.
Update 2296: Saratoga celebrated Funny Cide yesterday and Fans of Barbaro participated, reported here: Funny Cide Day FOB Meeting Place and here: Today at Saratoga.
Better Talk Now's injury not only knocks him out of the Sword Dancer but requires a change in plan leading up to the Breeders' Cup: Better Talk Now injured at bad time, excerpt:
"Realistically, the Man o' War is going to be pushing it," Motion said. "If he's got to walk for a week or two, I'd only have one chance to breeze, which is not going to be enough."
Motion said he would look at either the $300,000 Sky Classic at Woodbine on Sept. 23 or the $600,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational at Belmont on Sept. 30 for Better Talk Now's next start.
Good morning, sweet spirit Barbaro! Happy weekend to the Fans of Barbaro! Safe home today and every day to all dear horses who bravely put hooves to track, with special regards to Tim's Quick Quest!
