Barbaro Updates: 265

Update 1814: Michael Matz has decided not to enter Chelokee in the Kentucky Derby: No Derby Repeat for Matz; Chelokee to Return to Maryland, excerpt:

"I think we've basically kind of giving up running in the Derby," said Matz. "As much as I'd like to go, I don't think he's going to be the way I came into the Derby [with Barbaro] last year."

Matz said he would feel more comfortable about Chelokee with a little more time, so he and Centennial Farm have decided to head home and look at a possible bid for the May 19 Preakness (gr. I), the second jewel of racing's Triple Crown.

"If it was two more weeks or three more weeks, I would say I could probably give it a shot," said Matz. "He went awfully good today and I think I have everything solved, but I think I'm just kind of like a week away. A lot of those horses -- Barclay's horse (Barclay Tagg's Nobiz Like Shobiz), Carl's horse (Carl Nafzger's Street Sense), and Curlin, they're just doing so well right now. That's the way you want to go into a race."

Update 1813: Here is the video of the Today Show this morning with Mr. Mrs. Jackson and Dr. Richardson. It starts with clips of NBCs documentary and then turns to the interview. Mr. Jackson mentions this site: LIVE FROM STUDIO 1A: BARBARO REMEMBERED

Update 1812: I believe a great article on Edgar Prado: THE ECSTACY AND AGONY OF EDGAR PRADO. To be honest this is the first time I have posted an article without reading it first, which is a sign of the frenetic pace I am operating at this point (teaching at 1:25 pm; HRTV live telephone interview at 1pm).

Update 1811: A rainy morning this morning at Fair Hill, some trainers still trained on the tracks but we sensibly stayed in the shedrow. I had five to ride, three of which were for Tim, Grandma, Nonpariel and Nautical Agent. All in all a nice and uneventful shedrowing morning. I spent some of it on the phone working on more details for this weekends events at Delaware Park and Fair Hill. I have a few things to pick up for the fundraiser tomorrow night, which I'll then be able to list this evening on the celebration page. Not to create "buzz", but pretty cool Barbaro stuff for sure! Michael Dickinson and Graham Motion are also contributing some gifts I have not yet seen (nor listed). I am hopeful the fundraiser will do what it should do, raise funds for great causes (TCA and Laminitis research).

Good luck to the Hennegan brothers today, their film The First Saturday in May premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival: TriBeCa Film Festival: Film Sheds Light On Horse Racing.

Update 1810: In leau of little Derby activity yesterday (many of the Derby contenders will have their final work over the next 4 days) Steve Haskin looks into the pedigrees of the leading contenders: Steve Haskin's Derby Report: Won't You Stay, Just a Little Bit Farther. The Derby will be the first time these horses have tried to compete in a race as long as a mile and a quarter.

A nice grade 3 winner for Graham Motion yesterday at Keeneland: Ex-Claimer Jade's Revenge Posts Ben Ali Upset. Keeneland is looking to set a new handle record for its meet (its good to see the switch to a synthetic track becoming a good business decision): Keeneland's Handle Reaches Record Level.

Don't forget the Jacksons and Dr. Richardson are on the Today show this morning (7:45 am). I am scheduled to do a phone interview for HRTV, I believe it is live and scheduled for 1 pm (just before the class I teach!)

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, Alex and Tim! Good morning, fellow Fans!

Some of you are waking up in strange beds this morning, having travelled from all points of the compass for the celebration at Delaware Park. Welcome to the East Coast everyone! (I live way North of that area but I just want you all to feel welcome!) We all have much to celebrate and it will all be the stuff memories are made of...enjoy! Know that there are many of us who are with you in spirit.

Alex and Tim - Thank you for being such gracious hosts, both real and virtual. What a ride it is, eh? And, Tim - best of luck with Mediman today at Pimlico.

I have a day off from work so I will be able to tune in to the Today Show at 7:45 to see the Jacksons and Dr. R. And I'll have the tissues close by.

Everyone, have a great day. Prayers to all in need.

Good morning Alex, Heavenly Barbaro, and all FOB's....

Looking forward to the Today Show segment...what a lovely way to kick off a weekend celebration to honor our beloved Barbaro. I hope that all FOB celebrations across the country are a joyful, spirit filled, grand time that will lead to many new friendships and a renewal of committment to keep up all the efforts to rescue, support, and protect horses in this country. I will be at the Tampa Bay Downs Celebration here in Florida....a gathering of about 30 FOB's. No stars, celebs, chat room personalities...no one that is well known except the star of our nation himself....BARBARO.We will be decked in our Barbaro bars tee's, raising funds for laminitis research and the Last Chance Corral Foal Rescue. All FOB's should be proud of what we have accomplished these many months in the interest of protecting and saving America's horses. God bless each and every one of you and know that Barbaro will be with each of us, in our hearts as he is every day, as we shed a tear, share a smile, and raise a toast to his life on his day.

Good Morning all members of the Barbaro Nation

TGIF - right? We've had a good week re: horse slaughter. There is still much to be done but the decisions this week are encouraging.

To all those going to the Del Park Barbaro birthday celebration - please take lots of pictures for the rest of us. As Marg said - many of us will be with you in spirit.

Have a great day all!

Merciful God, Great Spirit

May Your angels guide and protect us, command them to be our companions from our setting
out until our return; to clothe us with their invisible protection; to keep from us all danger and preserve us from all evil.

We travel to celebrate the life of Your great warrior horse, Barbaro. Bless our celebration and pour Your healing grace upon us who mourn . We ask Your blessings on our work to end slaughter, rescue abused and unwanted horses, funding a cure for laminitis and safety in all issues of racing.
We ask all this in Your precious Son's name,Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.

Hiya, FsOB! I wish each of you who may be traveling to a celebration of Barbaro's birthday a safe and prompt journey. It is a rainy, grey day here in the banks of the Thames. Ms. Nikita just came downstairs to lie on the sofa, just like she used to do each AM when I'd check in on Bobbey's status overnight. Ah, the good old days of ACN....

I received a long, lovely letter from Senator Chris Dodd in response to my having asked him several months ago to support S-311. He is an ethical person and the letter was very thoughtful.

#### To Harriette, thank you for invoking the blessings of the Great Spirit for us yesterday.
To Martita: Your poetic trilogy was such a gift yesterday. Many thanks to Bobbey's muse!
Thanks to Nancy R. Lewis for the great news that Senator Kennedy signed on as as co-sponsor. The spirit of the late great Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis must be smiling.
To Barb M. in FLA: Great news that Over Enough's eye injury is healing. You have been such a stalwart during this long process.
To Ann in Maryland: Thank you as well for the beautiful poem that you wrote yesterday.
Amen to Eva's posting of 4:07 PM on 04/26!
To Lynne Brown: Your "Lady at the Fence" updates are so enjoyable. You capture the personality of the trio so well.
To CJ: Glad to know that you are still in contact with Lillian Petroff. Praise the Lord and pass the "carrits"!
Welcome back to the big board, Elsa.
To Dora J. Crow: I loved your postings so much yesterday.
To Becky: I hope that Chip is getting better.
To Linda Lee: May your young friend have a great birthday on 04/30 and may she grow up demonstrating the grace and spirit of Barbaro.
Does anyone have an update about Abercrombie or Ernie? Peace, RMH ####

Good morning everyone!

About to go to work but checking in here first. I can't tell you how great it is to see every name listed above! Feels like coming home.

Speaking of that, welcome back Alex. I hope your trip was wonderful and memorable. I trust it was. More importantly, I'm sure your presence made your grandmorther's birthday very, very special for her. You're a good, kind, man.

This has been such a wonderful week for our horses, but our journey is not over yet. Let's take tomorrow and Sunday to celebrate the birthday of one so dear and then return Monday with a vengeance to complete our goal. We WILL win this time!

Joan Roya, Lynne, Bonnie, Dora, CJ, Susan, and so many, many others not up yet.....and ones already here this morning. (Marg I'm having coffee right now!) Harriette, Nakita and Robyn, Cal, Wendy, Janice, Bonnie B....

Everyone, make it a great day!

Good Morning FOB's

ANOTHER BIG DAY FOR HORSES…….

On Thursday, the House passed HR249 restoring the prohibition on the commercial sale and slaughter of wild free roaming horses and burros. This is a tremendous victory on behalf of all of our horses.

As you all know, S311 was voted on and passed in the Senate Commerce committee on Wednesday. This means it is now released and can be put on the senate calendar for a full vote. While this is WONDERFUL news, our job is far from over.

But this is a weekend to celebrate……both the birthday of our beloved Barbaro and the events that have unfolded in Washington. There will be parties all over the country from Maine to California. Many of you will be traveling far. And most of you will be meeting each other for the first time!! It is almost impossible to fathom that this is all happening because of one horse…BARBARO!!!

If there was ever a question of what his legacy would be, this says it all. Everyone coming together to celebrate his life, working together to help horses everywhere. To end horse slaughter, to cure laminitis, to make sure that our beautiful horses live safely and without fear.

So for now, savor your victory and know that each and everyone of you played a major part in getting this far. You guys are doing a magnificent job. We WILL see this through to the end and we WILL win!!!

Safe journey to all FOB’s and a happy and wonderful BARBARO weekend!!

We will both be at Delaware Park and are looking forward to meeting many of you!

HERE'S A GREAT BIRTHDAY CHALLENGE THAT CAN HAPPEN 'IN THE MOMENT' AND 'ON THE SPOT' RIGHT AT YOUR OWN BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS FOR BOBBY!

If the 'person in charge' of each celebration(main contact, leader, etc.) would like to collect all the checks written out that day and mail then to NBC, that would be terrific!!

I'm sure each location has someone who is 'spearheading' the birthday celebration at each track; i.e. Tampa, Hollywood Park, Colorado, TX, OH, etc. So if that one individual would like to collect all the checks written on the 29th and mail them directly to NBC with your own note stating how much you collected on behalf of laminitis research, that would be wonderful. In this way, each separate celebration will be recognized for their efforts on an individual basis and this is a great motivator and incentive for each location to 'run its best race', so to speak. A little friendly competition never hurt, right? LOL

So, yes, by all means, let's get all the birthday celebrations involved in this ... each 'leader' of the respective locations motivate your troops to writing out checks for $29 on April 29, and then gather them up, total your figures and send it directly to NBC with your own letter enclosed based on your specific location. In this way, we will all be acting individually and collectively toward a major goal ... the end of Laminitis.

HERE'S THE INFORMATION ON HOW TO MAKE THE CHECKS PAYABLE FOR THE $29 ON THE 29TH BARBARO BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION ... AND HOW TO EARMARK FOR 'LAMINITIS FUND' IN THE "MEMO" SECTION OF THE CHECK.

Just a thought/Suggestion, will the person in charge of collecting/sending the checks Highlight with a Marker THE MEMO LINE AND ALSO TO PROOF ALL OF THEM TO BE SURE EACH CHECK IS MARKED LAMINITIS FUND.

Checks should be made payable to the
"Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania,"
with Laminitis Fund on the memo line and sent to:

University of Pennsylvania,
School of Veterinary Medicine
New Bolton Center Office of Development
382 West Street Road
Kennett Square, PA 19348

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE ...

THANKS AGAIN FOR EVERYTHING ...

LINNIE

OK, GANG WE HAVE ANOTHER EXCITING CHALLENGE, AND THIS ONE IS GOING TO KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF ... MINE ARE ALREADY GONE!!

READ THIS:
From UPENN
I was just talking to Gail Luciani, our Communications Director about the
29th. Do you think you could ask your reps to take some photos at the celebrations
around the country. We'd like to do a news story and a website piece after the festivities are over and then we can also report on the success of the $29 campaign and thank everyone.

TAKE SOME PIX????????????????? I KNOW MY PEOPLE OUT THERE ... AND YOU WILL ALL TAKE LOTS AND LOTS OF PICTURES OF THE MONIES BEING RECEIVED, THE CHECKS BEING WRITTEN AND HANDED OVER!!!

JUST A SUGGESTION ... IF YOU CAN, DESIGNATE ONE PERSON IN YOUR INDIVIDUAL 'BIRTHDAY BARBARO CELEBRATION' TO BE THE 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHER' TO MEMORIALIZE YOUR EVENT ... OR DESIGNATE SEVERAL, BUT JUST MAKE SURE THIS IS A "KODAK MOMENT" TO REMEMBER FOR THE AGES ... HECK, MAKE THIS A THOUSAND KODAK MOMENTS ....

TAKE PICTURES, RECORD THE EVENT ... COLLECT THE CHECKS, COUNT THE MONEY AND DO IT ALL FOR BARBARO!!

BRAVO FANS OF BARBARO ...!!! MAKE THIS EVENT BEYOND EVEN YOUR WILDEST EXPECTATIONS!!! FOR THE BIG BOSS HOSS ON HIS FIRST 'HEAVENLY' BIRTHDAY!!! AND SEND YOUR PICTURES ALONG WITH YOUR CHECKS AND YOUR LETTER PROUDLY CLAIMING WHAT YOUR CELEBRATION RAISED IN BARBARO'S MEMORY FOR LAMINITIS RESEARCH!

I KNOW YOU ARE ALL GOING TO TAKE THIS RACE TO YOUR HEARTS AND FIGHT IT TO THE FINISH LINE ... TX, OH, ME, CA, FL, CO, DE AND ALL POINTS IN BETWEEN FAR AND WIDE!!!

AND THEY'RE OFF!!!

I AM SO PROUD OF ALL OF YOU BEFORE YOU EVEN 'DO IT' BECAUSE I ALREADY KNOW HOW DETERMINED AND DEDICATED YOU ARE TO MAKE YOUR BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION THE BEST EVER!!!

LOVE TO ALL OF YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO ... AND ALL THAT YOU CONTINUE TO DO ... FOR BARBARO ... FOR THE HORSES ... AND TO SLAY THE LAMINITIS DRAGON FOR GOOD!!

LET'S LICK LAMINITIS!! LET'S LICK IT!!

FOR EVERYONE!!
There are only a couple days until a Very Special Occasion Takes Place ... An Occasion so Monumental that the Country at large will take part in this Celebration with mini-celebrations of their own to Commemorate this great Hero and Champion!!! We all know who this is ... BARBARO'S BIRTHDAY!!

HOWEVER ... There are 365 DAYS in the year when a KILLER steps in and takes the life of such a great Hero and Champion ... and, sadly, we all know who THIS is also ... LAMINITIS!!! And we need, no we MUST take THE LIFE OF THIS KILLER ... In this case, "AN EYE FOR AN EYE" is justified as righteous indignation!!!

So, our April Campaign must be extra special for Bobby ... our "Let's Lick Laminitis" needs another "KICK", and the only way to do this is with funds for laminitis research. So, we are going to honor Barbaro for his incredible gallantry both on and off the racetrack ... AND ... we are going to honor the man who gave Barbaro back his life for more than 8 months with his caring, his concern, his tireless efforts, his labor of love and his surgical skills ... DR. DEAN RICHARDSON!!!

So, I am asking with my hand extended for your help, your generosity and your love for the bond of love that was shared between our "Bobby" and Dr. Dean Richardson!!

But there's more ... a little baby filly was recently born to our Rosie ... and her name is "Bobby's L'il Angel" and we all know why!!! She needs to be protected from the ravages of laminitis that could endanger her own life at any time ... so we need to honor little "Angel" during Bobby's Birthday Celebration as well ...

So, here's the April Challenge:

Donate $29 in honor of our Beloved Barbaro on his 4th Birthday ...

Donate $29 in honor of our equally loved Dr. Dean Richardson for everything he contributed and gave to Barbaro during those long months and weeks ... Because of Dr. Richardson, Bobby was able to "walk in the sunshine" and "graze in the grass" again ... Dr. Richardson should be honored during Barbaro's Birthday Celebration

Donate $29 in honor of "Bobby's L'il Angel" and protect her from harm for Bobby ...

Give once, give twice, give 3 times, but please give.

What better way to honor BARBARO on his 4th Birthday than with our assurance to him, and Dr. Richardson and "Angel" that we will NOT stand by and allow this crippling killer - Laminitis - to take the life of another of our beloved equine companions.

Let our voices and our donations swell in perfect harmony in Celebration of Life for Bobby, Dr. R and Angel!!

Here are the BLUE LINKS to donate! Thanks so much Everyone!

Let's Make the April Donations to the laminitis fund the biggest and best yet! I know we can do this together!!!

Good morning Alex and FOBs,

I can't believe the weekend has finally and we will all get to meet in delaware.

Alex, will there be directions given to get to fair hill? I printed off directions from the fiar hill web site. Will they be sufficient?

I just saw the today show and off course the tears started flowing. I hope there are plenty of tissues at the bbq.

I have to go and set my timer to record you Alex on hrtv.

See you all tomorrow.

Good morning all FOBs. Good morning sweet Spirit of Barbaro. Good morning, dear Alex.

I just saw the Today piece on NBC and had renewed tears. The love and devotion of the Jackson's and Dr. Dean is still so evident. I was thrilled beyond thrilled to have Mrs. J mention the love & devotion of Barbaro's "fans and friends" and Mr. J mention Alex and this web site. What a joy to see the Barbaro effect. I know I will be a complete wreck when I watch the documentary on Sunday. I wish I could be at DelMar celebration this weekend. All you who do go know that the thoughts and prayers of us who cannot attend will be there with you.

Posted by: Kristina at April 27, 2007 12:54 PM

Good morning, all!

Ohmygod, I just watched the Today Show and tears are streaming down my cheeks. It feels as if it happened just yesterday.

Alex, how exciting that you and this site were mentioned!

I guess I wish they had been able to talk about some of the good things that have come out of all this, the rescues, the anti-slaughter, the laminitis, track safety, and on and on.

But just seeing that beautiful boy again rips a big hole in my heart. I think I just won't wear ANY mascara Sunday 'cause I am not sure how I will get through the DelPk celebration without falling apart.

I wish all FOBs safe travels to wherever across this fair land you are celebrating Sunday (and some may be in other countries, too). See you in Delaware!

Aw, now I have to start the public part of my day with tears in my eyes. Again, I'm convinced my sadness for Barbaro's close connections is greater than my sadness for myself. But we are ALL Fans of Barbaro and we will persevere in all our endeavors. And all in Barbaro's name. I'm humbled to be a part of it all.

Hay, FOB's!

Mr. Jackson mentioned Alex and TWR!!!! He said Alex was commenting on how this site is still getting lots of "hits" and how we're still going strong. I'm watching footage of Michael and Peter at FH...the Jacksons were filmed at NBC. It seems to me that the Jacksons are still grieving to some extent (aren't we all). The Jacksons are so grateful for the support and love they've received through this amazing saga. Dr.R touched on the last few weeks of Barbaro's life - it does seem to me that he is still working thru all that happened. It could be me, but I could see on his face that he is still profoundly affected by his time with Barbaro. The Jacksons also told how much Michael Matz loved Barbaro. It amazes me (in the best sense) how the most wonderful people in the world came together for this special horse.

And I lost it. I lost it watching Michael Matz and Mrs. Jackson. I thought I'd cried all my tears, but my heart proved me wrong yet again.

I am so honored to be even a small part of this. In a sort of tribute, I wanted to announce here that I am now President and Founder of NomTara Press, LLC in preparation to self-publish "Cassidy's Rescue" and the other children/horse stories I have in my head. "Cassidy" should be out by the end of the summer.

So I'll be bringing LOTS of Kleenex this weekend. Its going to be a cleansing and loving weekend.

You are all the greatest.

Lyn-congratulations on the book. There are so many good things ahead for you. Couldn't happen to a more deserving person. Good luck.

To all FOB's travelling to the various celebrations, be safe everyone. Have wonderful celebrations. I will be thinking of you and Barbaro. I am having some surgery on Monday so I won't be able to attend any celebrations. My kids and I will be making a carrot cake in honor of B's birthday. We will have our own celebration.

TO ANYONE COMING TO THIS SITE AFTER HEARING ABOUT IT ON THE TODAY SHOW THIS MORNING:

Welcome! This is a wonderful site that links you instantly to so many different ways to help horses and to so many people who know so much about them and are incredibly generous with their knowledge. Whether it's helping to find a cure for the awful disease of laminitis, rescuing horses from abusive owners and the horrors of slaughterhouses, working to improve racing safety, promoting the passage of federal anti horse slaughter legislation (ahem, a particular plug for that one -- and, let me tell you, we're on a roll now!) or just learning about the wonder of these magnificant animals, this is the place for you. Through the good graces of our "leader," Alex Brown, we have have access to this wonderful resource to work from. Mrs. Jackson said she hoped Barbaro's legacy would be to inspire people to help the horse in whatever way interests them. I hope you will come join us at this wonderful site where we work together to do so many wonderful things.

I'm sure I speak on behalf of all of the FOBs when I say welcome, and JOIN US!!

Good morning Alex and all FOBs,

It is a beautiful morning here in NE Ohio & looks to be a nice weekend. A great way to celebrate Barbaro's birthday. I'd like to think Barbaro sent the nice weather.

I am so PROUD to be an FOB. The Jacksons mentioned Barbaro's fans this morning on the Today show and talked about Alex. Great story and footage of Barbaro too. Like all of us, you can see how much they miss and love Barbaro. They acknowledged that they are surrounded by love which is helping them. Truly wonderful people. Dr. R was in Columbus, Ohio, his alma mater. You can see he misses him too.

Have a great day everyone. Keep fighting for the horses.

Good morning to all. Welcome back safe and sound, Alex.
Getting ready for work this morning and tuned into NBC as usual and got so excited when I heard the name "Barbaro". What a lovely piece. Have been concentrating so hard on anti-slaughter strategies of late that I haven't had time to "visit" with Barbaro. Reality has set in after seeing the piece that I will be crying all day Sunday as I am now. I am comforted by the thought that for once I might not be crying alone...
Great idea about the $29 toward fighting laminitis! The only downside this weekend is that I will have to miss spending time with Moses at HORSE for the first weekend since we've been spending time together, albeit for a very good cause. I plan to drop some carrots and apples off for Moses and the other horses on my way to Delware via NY tomorrow morning and will have just enough time to give Moses a kiss on the nose.
Can't wait to be in the company of all of you. Love will definitely be in the air. I just made a note to pack LOTS of tissues.
Have a great day, all, and a safe journey.

P.S. Alex, I was also wondering about Fair Hill on Sunday. Do we just show up? I was planning on googling general directions from the hotel to Fair Hill although I haven't done so yet so am not sure how long a ride it is. Thanks!

Good morning, Alex, FOB's Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, Dr. R. and Barbaro! Sorry I won't be able to attend Barbaro's Birthday at Delaware Park (a shame because I live in the area, but other committments). Have a great time all!

I missed the Today Show this AM. Maybe someone will post a link to a clip of it.

Lyn Gilbert,

The tears do hit unexpectedly sometimes I've noticed, I think that will happen for quite awhile yet. The grieving process takes a long time and you NEVER forget or stop loving the departed one. That's why Barbaro will live forever in our hearts.

I wish you the best of luck with your publishing/writing career.

LIGHT A CANDLE FOR BARBARO's BIRTHDAY!

BARBARO CANDLES

Candles lit today will be shining on Barbaro's birthday celebration Sunday. Please honor the Big Boss Horse and all the good he has inspired in the care of horses and in the hearts of people.

Good people all: A toast to the Jacksons, for Michael, Peter, Edgar, Eduardo, Tim and Alex, and a toast to Barbaro, his brothers, and all the horses saved. Long may you run!

Peace -- Susan

Good morning Alex, good morning everyone.

Here's a thought. If horse slaughter is banned altogether, and many horses need homes.

Why don't we stop global warming and start using horses for transportation again?

(OK, maybe not a very practical thought)

Once again: safe travels and wonderful times for all going to Delaware this weekend. It's a gloomy, dark morning here in cny...but there are greyhounds to be fed, and things to get done...and I will continue to savor what the FOBs did along with other supporters of THE HORSE this week...Both wild and on the tracks, we are making the world a safer place for these magnificent animals...and all at the behest of Gretchen Jackson who aimed us like a million lasers at HS, laminitis and track safety. What a wonderful woman...how courageous she was this morning on the TODAY interview. She and Roy and Dr. R, Matz. That NBC documentary will definately be a heartbreaker.... Sunday at 5pm, and bring your tissues...

Yes, they are all still loving B., missing him, feeling the sorrow... but living in hope for all the changes to come. And of course, trying --I am sure--to not fall in love with La Ville Rouge 2007. I wonder what they will name that saucy little colt.

Anyhow: off to the kitchen, all be well: yours in Barbaro: jonna

Good morning everyone, especially Alex and Tim. Thank you, guys, for all you do for us through this site. I cannot start my day without my FOB Fix.

###
I will be celebrating Bobby's Birthday in spirit--I will buy a piece of carrot cake at the local grocery, and after a riding lesson on my OTTB, I will give him carrots and eat my cake.

Such a lot has happened this past year. A real rollercoaster, for sure, but most of the outcomes have been positive and for the good of so many.

We cannot appreciate the highs unless we experience the lows, and we have certainly "been there, done that."

Safe journey to all traveling to the celebrations and those of us who are with you in spirit will expect a full report with pictures and anecdotes when you return.

Cheers!

Smitty - I have long thought this would be a much better world if we could go back to the original horse power for all our transportation needs! The added benefit would be slowing life down to a managable pace. Oh, it's great to dream, eh?

Midwest just saw the Today show! It is so nice to know that all of the things we do bring then some comfort. I believe Mrs. Jackson said they are surrounded by love. I also thought it was so interesting what she said about how well Michael knew Barbaro.

It is so wonderful and also so heart breaking to see the footage of him. I know in time I will be so glad that I have a copy of that DVD, however right now it will be so difficult.

I learned a very important lesson this morning while watching the Today segment...I am totally incapable at looking at Barbaro, Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, Dr. Richardson and Michael Matz without the waterworks kicking into high gear...I'm afraid it will be a very tearful weekend at Del Park!

FOALING FUNDRAISING POOL FOR MISTY AT MIRACLE HORSE RESCUE...

To make a wager on the date and time of Misty's foaling, please go to the Forum under "GENERAL" topics - the thread is "MISTY'S BIRTH POOL - DIVE RIGHT IN!" I haven't got a clue how to "blue-link" this...anybody want to help??? Please...

According to Misty's most recent examination by her vet, her foal iS due in 2-3 weeks!! It's time to have some fun and raise some much-needed money like we did for Rosie...just post your guess on the date and time of the blessed event - each wager costs $5, you may wager as many times as you like...keep those guesses and 5 dollar bills coming! All times will be Pacific Time Zone! After the blessed event I will contact everyone with the amount they have pledged, and the "winner" get to designate which rescue will be the beneficiary.

No arm-twisting meant here (well, maybe just a little), but I truly hope that the winner designates the funds for Miracle Horse Rescue...Misty will be living out her life there - she will NEVER be up for adoption, and we have seen a fine example of the benefits of the fine cuisine and supplements served at MHR when Rosie's strong, healthy filly FINALLY graced us with her presence. We pray for a safe delivery for both Misty and her foal...who will be named "Bobby's Spirit!"

A bit of background on Misty...she will be 26 years old on APRIL 29TH! She was one of the first group of FOB rescues (along with Rosie), she was saved during the "In Honor of Barbaro Rescue Challenge, and resides at Miracle Horse Rescue in Pahrump, Nevada. Misty is considered VERY HIGH RISK because of her age and problems with previous foalings; MHR's veterinarian has confirmed this.

When Stephanie at MHR asked why Misty had been bred again at her advanced age, the response was "because she throws nice babies." GRRRRRRRR! Misty's most recent vet exam was on April 24th; it is very likely that additional veterinary expenses will be incurred. At that exam, the doctor stated that Spirit in in the correct position for birthing (the little one even tried to suck on the doctor's fingers!), and that Misty has a good, strong heart and a very big bag!

No time to waste - DIVE RIGHT INTO THE POOL WITH ME - for the horses!

YOU CAN COPY/PASTE THIS LINK INTO YOUR BROWSER until I get the knack of the blue link!

Another version of the "feel-good" story of Mama from the MO horse trailer wreck!

Mare rescued from wreck gives birth

04/25/2007

By CHERYL WITTENAUER / Associated Press

New life has sprung from a gruesome, middle-of-the-night, horse-trailer wreck on Interstate 44 last September.

One of the dozens of horses that were trapped inside and rescued has given birth.

Mama, a thoroughbred mare, delivered a healthy baby boy on April 18. She and her new foal are resting and doing well at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, about an hour west of St. Louis, the Humane Society of Missouri said Wednesday.

The foal, which for now is known as "Baby," stands so tall he has difficulty tucking his long white legs under him to nap. He is healthy, energetic and interested in nursing. Like most youngsters, he's curious. On Wednesday, he interacted with a llama which has free run of the ranch.

The rehab facility is run by the Humane Society of Missouri and is widely recognized as the largest of its kind in the United States.

It's also the place where 25 of those horses have been given the most unlikely of second chances after their trip to the slaughterhouse took an unexpected and, some say, miraculous detour.

Last fall, a double-decker horse trailer en route to an Illinois slaughterhouse crashed on I-44 and was perched on its side. Forty-one horses were trapped in the mangled wreckage. Some perished.

Rescuers, led by ranch director Earlene Cole, worked through the night.

Using huge straps attached to a tow-truck winch, workers lifted and moved horses that were pinned on each other inside the trailer.

The horses were headed a slaughterhouse — to be processed and sold for people to eat in Europe.

After the wreck, the owner, who had purchased them for slaughter, told Cole he would dispatch another truck to take the surviving horses to the slaughterhouse.

That wasn't acceptable to Cole or the handful of veterinarians on site, who saw the suffering and had to put nine of the horses down on the spot.

After some negotiating, Longmeadow gained custody of the horses.

Among those saved were a yearling thoroughbred, a 4-year-old Appaloosa named D.D. and a young quarter horse mare named Karma who recently took sixth place at a local riding show.

They also included a spunky thoroughbred named Stan; Mama; and a horse they call Willie because of his will to live after being trapped beneath four dead horses in the trailer.

Of the horses that survived the wreck, five have been adopted, three are being sponsored as "barn buddies" in which the public helps pay for their upkeep, and three are still recovering from their injuries. The rest are up for adoption.

The Humane Society of Missouri is asking the community to help name the new colt. Ten names to choose from will be posted online.

The horrific accident exposed the sad side of horse racing, a speculative industry that has become overrun with animals that risk being left behind if they don't help the bottom line. They can be turned loose in the wilderness, euthanized and cremated, or simply taken to an auction, for sale. In almost every case in which a horse is sent to a slaughterhouse, it has outlived its usefulness to the owner.

About 90,000 horses were processed at the three U.S. slaughterhouses last year — one in Illinois and two more in Texas that are currently not slaughtering for human consumption and could be shut down permanently, depending on pending legislation in Congress.

Hi Alex and Barbaro Fans:

I watched the NBC segment with Roy and Gretchen Jackson and Dr. R . . .that was 15 minutes ago and my eyes are still tearing up. Nice to know that I'm not the only one that has a problem with any mention of the name Barbaro.

I've watched the Kentucky Derby since I was 10 years old and this year, I'm not sure I'll be able to even watch this unique part of American Sports.

But I guess you have to face your grief and at least I can come here and share my thoughts without being ashamed of my tears.

Barbaro represented all that was good and compassionate in the human spirit and I hope that part of his legacy will never be forgotten.

Wishing all a great day.

Hi FOBs!
Had to check in before I start packing my bags for Delaware! I'm thinking I'd better leave room for LOTS of tissues, since I got teary just watching the clips on NBC today. I haven't done that in awhile.

### I haven't seen it posted here, so forgive me if I just missed it, but along with Rosie, we have another miracle foal in our midst--MAMA--one of the rescued Missouri horses--gave birth on 4-18! You can check out photos of the little guy at hsmo.org and vote on your favorite name. He has 4 LONG socks/stockings and a really neat lightning blaze down his face. Many FOBs continue to support these rescued horses, thanks to Rosemary in NE Ohio, who now has a Mother's Day fundraiser going. How appropriate is that?

Safe travels and have a great weekend, everyone!

Good morning, my Beloved Angel Boys. Missing you both more than ever, but we carry on...

Good morning, Barbaro Nation! I just had an interesting experience. I heard geese flying overhead, which isn't unusual. Then I repeatedly heard a goose calling from close by, not overhead. Given where I live, THAT is unusual. After twenty minutes of trying to decide whether I was insane or not, I went outside with my cell phone to see if the goose was in distress. We are fortunate to have the World Bird Sanctuary here in St. Louis; they do wonderful work saving and rehabbing wild birds!

The goose sounded like he was across the street, but where? As soon as I started toward the street, two Canada geese stood up on the roof of a business across the street. They honked and honked as they lifted off, changed course, crossed over the street at an angle, and flew about twenty feet over my head as I gaped at them from my front yard. They flew off, calling all the while.

I had a bad night, little sleep, and was having a bad morning till my feathered frens came into my morning.

Good Morning Everyone, especially Tim, Alex, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson and Dr. Dean.

I just finished reading the Edgar Prado article that was posted. What an incredible man he is. He gets it. If anyone can read that article and not cry, you're a stronger person than I am!

I can't wait to meet everyone Sunday! I'm getting antsy I'm so excited.

This has truly been a great week for those who we speak for...the HORSES. I'm so proud of what has been accomplished, passing bills, getting bills out of committee, and saving lives. If you're following the discussion threads, yesterday 25 more mares and foals were saved from the feedlot! The FsOB raised over $4,000 in 24 hours! By the count that was mentioned in the thread, we have saved over 600 lives! Tears of joy for all that has been done and being done keep filling my eyes.

I do have some sad news. No one died or anything "serious" like that, but I took my dog to the vet for her annual checkup last Monday. While I was there I asked my vet, who is a very nice lady who does care for animals, what her opinion was on horse slaughter. Sadly, her answer led to the end of our 8 year long relationship. She said she didn't have a problem with HS "if it's done humanely." You could have knocked me over with a feather. I told her how inhumane it truly is and she didn't bat an eyelash saying that if the USDA said it was humane it was good enough for her! How sad is it when a vet DOESN'T GET IT? I just paid my bill and said it had been nice while it lasted.

With all that's being done for these beautiful creatures, I can't help but think WE WILL WIN no matter what.

Sorry that I'm taking so much space. I just had a lot to say to those who DO get it.

There are a lot of wonderful veterinarians out there, I am sure. I know at least 2 simply remarkable vets. Unfortunately, there are also a lot of vets and vet associations that just do not GET IT. It is very difficult for the public at large, which often also does not get it, to understand that.

But we, the famblee here at TWR do get it. That is what makes this famblee so wonderful and so remarkable and why we are all so indebted to Tim and Alex for this site, and of course, to our dear Bobby. We GET IT & always will.

To our dear FOBs who are or will be traveling this weekend, safe passage and a wonderful time. We will, at least, all be united in thoughts, prayers and gratitude for our beloved Barbaro and all of his connections, whether at DelPark or at home.

I need your input FsOB. My idea bucket (brain that is) is working overtime again and I never know if my ideas are good or just plain goofy.

As we all know, one of the arguments used in support of HS is "where will all these horses go?"

My answer: With all of the race tracks in this country, many of which are falling into disrepair and decrepitude (is that a word?lol), why don't we create an organization to purchase and rebuild/maintain some of these tracks and use them to keep the horses in? Someone once in here I think mentioned using the tracks when they're not holding a meet. I guess that's where this seed germinated.

For example, what I'm saying is, why don't we raise the money and buy a track like Hialeah, restore and maintain it and have a place where rescued horses can go until they're adopted or where they can enjoy their retirement if they aren't adoptable?

Just a basic idea, but I would appreciate any input you all have. Not only would we be saving a piece of history, but we'd be saving the horses and taking away our opponents argument! Thank you.

Patti in IL--and anyone else!

I don't know what part of the state you are in nor whether this is feasible for you, but we're having a local Birthday celebration at Bleacher's Sports Bar in Hillsboro, IL Saturday night. Our own CJ and her band, the Mythic Figs, have a gig.

We have a thread on Forum, St. Louis Barbaro Birthday Bash, with details!

Alex - thanks as always.

Just wanted to post to wish everyone safe travels this weekend and I can't wait to meet everyone at Fair Hill and Del Park on Sunday.

I know all of the other FOBs out there will definitely be with us in spirit!

Good morning FOBs,

It was good to see the Today show interview this morning, and to have the Alex and Tim web sites mentioned by Mr. Jackson. But it was hard seeing, or sensing, how much the Jacksons and Dr. Dean miss Barbaro. I was pleased to hear the Jacksons mention how much they appreciate the support they have received from so many fans. They said they're still getting letters and notes of support.

Seeing the many clips again of Barbaro racing during this morning's interview, one can't help but notice again how good he was. So athletic and so powerful.

I agree with what many of the posters have said this morning about watching the Today Show interview, and how keeping a dry eye watching it wasn't easy.

I only wish the interview was longer than about 6-8 minutes, and there would have been mention of the many birthday celebrations this weekend and the Barbaro brothers coming along.

Does anyone know why Dr. R was in Columbus, Ohio this morning?

I'm looking forward to the Thistledown (Cleveland) birthday gathering this Sunday.

Maybe a vending machine with those little pocket packs should be set up in a prime location, will all proceeds donated to our charities! A fortune in quarters thanks to all of us teary-eyed FOBs!!

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is pretty simple.. Please tell ten
friends to tell ten today! The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble
getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of
getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an
animal in need" for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their
corporate sponsors/advertiser s use the number of daily visits to donate
food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Oh, Family!

How I've MISSED seeing everyone!

Mr. Brown, thank you so much for giving us this place to meet, and for lending us your wisdom, knowledge, kindness and strength. I hope your grandmother is in good form, and enjoyed her party. Gosh, it is SO nice to see you back!

To each and every one of you, you make me a better person, you remind me that I am not too old or too cynical to make a difference, you expand my world, and I will be forever grateful to you all.

### - Robyn Hoffmann - When I posted for the very first time, you were the first to welcome me, and I will treasure you always because of that simple act of kindness.

### - Sherry in AZ - The happiest of birthdays to you.

### - Nancy in ct - Another pool. Terrific! Can't wait to get in. I'm lighting candles like crazy for that old mare...

### - Lee - I'm not sure how it would work, but I like the idea... I'll go back and get your address and email you later.

And I cannot type other names here without offending by omission, so please know that I read your names, and your posts, with care and attention, and I missed you all so much the past few days.

I will celebrate the Boss Hoss's birthday at Golden Gate Field with the NorCal group, and look forward to meeting so many others who "get it". To each of you, from my heart, every joy in your gatherings wherever they may be, and gratitude to the indomitible spirit of Barbaro, who brought us all to the battleground on behalf of his species.

To all running this weekend, safe trips and wings on their heels.

To all travellers, be safe, come home refreshed and literally "re-created" in spirit to continue to be a voice for the horses.

Love and comfort to all in need, four-legged and two-legged, and have a Barbaro day, courage and kindness.

I love you all -

Hello FOB famblee! May you all travel safely.
Amen, Hariette, as always, your words are beautiful and uplifting.

It will indeed be an emotional weekend. So sorry I cannot join you all in Delaware.

I can't help but see the common threads of three great tragedies. First--Hurrican Katrina. Why didn't some people leave? They wouldn't leave their animals behind.
Second--Barbaro--whose valiant spirit brought together an amazing group of people who are working for the good of all horses everywhere.
Third--the awful scandal at Menu Foods, and the resultant anger and outcry of us pet owners.

TAKE NOTE, CONGRESS---THEY ARE NOT "PROPERTY", OR "THROWAWAY". These tragedies have helped form and strengthen those of us who love our animal companinions. We will not be dismissed any more. We are united in love, in common convictions, in the strength of the spirit of our beloved Barbaro. We will win these races for HIM. So our beautiful, valiant boy will not have died in vain.

God bless and protect you all,

Kathy from Toledo and the cats

###Dawn in Omaha-I sent an email to Commissioner Irvin in GA letting him know that killer buyers frequent auctions and what can happen to horses when they buy them. This is the response I got this morning from his office:

I am responding to your message on behalf of Commissioner Irvin. You have raised a good point that others have brought to our attention. Our current focus is to promote the sale and encourage buyers that will provide loving homes.

The good news is that GA has a strong equine community and we have faith that they will turn out in mass to bid on the horse of their choice. As you can imagine, there is a lot of interest in assuring these horses receive humane care.

Thank you again for your concern.

Hello again, all of you darlings. I have been away a while. I'm using cyber cafes now.

I found out about Baby B. in a cyber cafe the other day. When the info popped up at Marestare, it took my breath away. I broke down at the keyboard. The owner of the place, (fortunately my neighbor), came over asking if I was OK. I told her yes, and that these were tears of joy. I showed her the news of Rosie, Baby B., and this site and what we are all doing. Another Barbaro effect in that cafe on Wednesday.

Then CJ sends me the links to the videos yesterday. The Baby is certainly full of herself and a true delight to watch. And Rosie and Misty look terrific. I gasped when I saw Baby B's blaze. I had everyone in the cyber cafe/general store/laundromat watching videos. It was the best time!!!

So, Here's to Rosie, Baby B., Misty, and Miracle Horse Rescue, for all the love and good care going on up there. Mucho prayers and love being sent to Misty now. XXXOOO

Thanks Alex for still being here.

Hay Famblee!

Hay, unklealexbrown. Will have to have a word with all the mischieveous angels who are spilling their troffs all ovur the werld.

The interview on the Today Show with Mr. and Mrs. Jackson and Dr. Dean was so touching. I will be forever haunted by the eyes of one who saw so much love in his liftime that was way too short. My only disappointment with the interview is that David Gregory did not mention that the interview was going to be aired on Barbaro's birthday. It was wonderful to hear Mr. Jackson mention Alex and TWR, hear them both speak of the many who loved Barbaro, especially Michael Matz.

The article written about Edgar Prado is wonderful too. My gosh, I don't htink I've ever cried so much in my entire life.

Will catch up with everyone later. Hope those of you meeting up in Delaware are having a spectacular time. My heart is with you. We here in CO will be with you in spirit on Sunday, as we spend the day loving and feeding horses, and celebrating our boy's birthday, and watching the NBC broadcast. Tears to hevvin...

### Susan E - Thank you SO much! And thanks also for asking after the Divine Ms. Punky - Hey, Barb, how's the little one doing?

### Nancy in CT - Looking forward to the water! And my mother told me never, NEVER to call a gentleman by his first name until introduced in person and invited to do so.

And, I forgot to brag on the site that Missouri Horse Hero Mama gave birth ON MY BIRTHDAY, so I consider that foal my present from the Horse Gods.
As I wrote to Rosemary, I bet you can't guess whom I will be sponsoring...(LOL!)

I'm so HAPPY to be able to talk to you all! I've been remiss on this board, because I have gotten involved with Steph and the California calling group. ("If you have time to check this site, ((TWR)), you have time to make phone calls", as one of our FsOB memorably wrote, giving me guilt and forcing me to sign up not only myself but my poor, long-suffering husband. Gosh, he's a good man!) But the day does not go by that I don't think of you all.

senators who voted yes for us on Wednesday....
that crunching, rustling, smary noise you'll hear from the North will be me....sniffle.

Hay Alex:

My mom e-mailed and said she heard your interview. She likes to watch Gator Nation run when his races are on televison. Last year she asked me who I liked in the Derby. I told her I hadn't been following racing much lately but there was an undefeated horse named Barbaro and I liked a gray horse named Steppenwolfer. Thank you to Barbaro and Steppenwolfer for not making me look like an idiot that day.
