    Barbaro Updates: 184

    updates are now here.

Update 1365: Tom visited Barbaro this afternoon and gave him a good grooming. He reported that Barbaro was comfortable "and his normal self".

As we await the Eclipse awards tonight (Bloodhorse.com will broadcast the results on the internet as they are known) here are the Japanese equivalent: Deep Impact Repeats as Japan's Horse of Year ... no surprises there. To continue on an international theme nominations have been made for the Dubai World Cup card: World Cup Abuzz Over Invasor-Discreet Cat Clash. This could shape up to be a great day's racing, not only with the potential clash of the proven (Invasor) and potential (Discreet Cat) but with the reappearance of a global star we have followed: Collier Hill in the Sheema Classic. Also nominated for that race is the 2006 English Derby winner, the 2006 Melbourne Cup winner and the 2006 Breeders' Cup Turf winner! Wow!

Dave Bentley was the fourth ex-champion jump jockey who is galloping around the Tapeta track this winter!

Update 1364: Saturday was adoption day for rescued horses from the MO accident: Rescued horses available for adoption.

Three of the ex champion jump jockeys, currently working at Fair Hill, have been identified: Ricky Hendricks, Chuck Lawrence (both trainers) and Gus Brown (Graham Motion exercise rider) ... one more to go!

As a quick reminder, the Barbaro update will be late today, after Tom's visit most likely. Here is an article on tonight's Eclipse awards: Barbaro's story still drawing wide audience... and Barbaro's broad appeal. The two stories below the main story are also of interest.

Update 1363: A white morning this morning at Fair Hill. A thin layer of snow supported by pretty thick fog! The Tapeta track seemed to handle the snow well. One concern with snow is whether it balls up in the horse's feet ... this did not seem to happen today on the Tapeta track.

I took three horses to the gate, two of which were Tim's (Chesapeake City Slew and Nonpariel). They each galloped out of the gate, and did so nicely. Our gate crew come down from Philadelphia Park so I could ask them how Hawty Creek was in the gate. Basically she was great. She seemed a little anxious when being loaded, but once in the gate stood very well. A good thing considering she had to wait about 4 - 5 minutes! The trouble behind the gate was caused by the #2 horse, which reared up causing the saddle to slip. The gate crew had to help readjust the tack. All in all Hawty Creek could not have been better around the gate under the circumstances. She appeared in pretty good order this morning. She ate 4 quarts last night, I was anticipating her hardly eating at all ... she looks good, and does not appear to have dropped off too much weight. I just took her out for a pick of grass, and will go back this afternoon and do the same thing.

Tim's Who's Happy is in the entries for tomorrow, at Philadelphia Park.

Its nice to see some of you trying to answer the question I posed in this morning's update. Two of the ex-champion jump jockeys have been identified. I won't reveal which two just yet!

Update 1362: Tonight are the Eclipse Awards, held in Los Angeles, televised by TVG. We know the Barbaro team will get one award, lets hope for a couple more. Another Dynaformer is a certainty for the Steeplechase award: McDynamo set to eclipse field. This will be his third Eclipse award. Fair Hill has a few connections to the Steeplechase community. Currently four ex-champion jump jockeys ply their trade at Fair Hill, two as trainers, two as exercise riders. I wonder if anyone can name the four ?

Turfway Park canceled its racing on sunday: Turfway Park Cancels Sunday Racing. They use the Polytrack, but cite the reason for the cancelation as thus:

Sherry Pinson, Turfway's director of communications, said the cancellation was due to the condition of area roads that would impact horses shipping to the track for the afternoon live racing program.

I am assuming the Barbaro update will be late today, after Tom's visit this afternoon. Off to Fair Hill. Hawty Creek will now have a few days off after her race, so it will be a nice light few days for me too!

Good Monday morning Alex, Barbaro and fellow fans

Waiting to hear ACN like everyone else. Also looking forward to the Eclipse awards and hoping for our boy and the Jacksons.

Also - Congratulations to Hawty Creek.

Waiting to hear more news on the slaughterhouse legislation. Hoping and praying that the end is near. I'm still not clear on the outcome of the recent court case in Texas. I know it's good news but still don't understand whether or not the Texas slaughterhouses are closing now or later or at all.

    Have a great day all!!!

Hiya, Bobbey! Ms. Nikita is sleeping in this AM, how about you, sweet prince? Today your human Mum and Dad will get a special award, along with your surgeon and special friend, Dr. Dean R. Too bad you can't watch them on TV. Do horses ever watch TV? Some of my beloved Huskies who are now across the Bridge used to do so. May your day be a sparkling one. Sure wish you could get outside again soon. Hugs, pets, & "scratches" from your pals in CT - Robyn, Brent, & Nikita

    #### To Alex, congratulations on Hawty Creek's performance this weekend.
To Pat G.: Hope your cruise was a good one. Seven days without a Barbaro update = yikes!
To Sarah: I hope that Lizzie's disc problem abates soon. One of my Huskies who has passed, Nina, slipped a disc during an ice storm probably 15 years ago or so. She made a full and complete recovery, but was hospitalized on IV steroids for probably a week. Very scary. A speedy recovery to your Lizzie. ####

    An offering I make.
    Restore my feet for me.
    Restore my legs for me.
    Restore my body for me.
    Restore my mind for me.
    Restore my voice for me.
This very day take out your spell for me.
    Happily I recover.
    Happily my interior becomes cool.
    Happily I go forth.
My interior feeling cool, may I walk.
No longer sore, may I walk.
Impervious to pain, may I walk.
With lively feelings may I walk.
As it used to be long ago, may I walk.
    Happily may I walk.
Happily, with abundant dark clouds, may I walk.
Happily, with abundant showers, may I walk.
Happily, with abundant plants, may I walk.
Happily, on a trail of pollen, may I walk.
    Happily may I walk.
Being as it used to be long ago, may I walk.
May it be beautiful before me.
May it be beautiful behind me.
May it be beautiful below me.
May it be beautiful above me.
May it be beautiful all around me.
    In beauty it is finished.
    In beauty it is finished.

    Precious Lord,
We continue to lift Barbaro up to you in prayer
for his continued healing. The Old Ones did not know your name, but they recognized you as the Great Spirit who watched over them. We praise you in all things and give the glory in Your name.
Thank you for Alex, the Jacksons, Dr Richardson and all the staff at NBC, the people at Kennett
Florist and all the FOB's who collectively share their stories of faith, their despair over lost ones and their love for this horse, Barbaro.

RE-POST FROM THE OTHER DAY. PLEASE MAKE YOUR CALLS AND SPREAD THE WORD TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO CALL THEIR REPRESENTATIVES.........

    JUST IN
    Dear Debra,

I have been in contact with Rep. Ed Whitfield’s (KY-1)
office and they have asked for our help and I think
that the FOB’s and your organization could help.

Since HR 503 just got introduced as well as the Senate
Bill S.311, we are in the process of building the
co-sponsorship list. The co-sponsorship list is
important because it shows how much support the bill
has among members of Congress and often times leads
those members in leadership positions to take action
on bills that have significant support.

So at this point, we are encouraging folks to contact
their US Representative and ask them to co-sponsor HR
503, and also to contact their 2 Senators and ask them
to cosponsor S. 311 - The American Horse Slaughter
Prevention Act. (so they will need to make 3 calls
    total!).

Thanks so much for all your work to protect horses!
Thanks Debra! This will be an amazing help!

Hi Everyone, I'm doing great thanks.. I've been working since the week after surgery. Not much stops me, but I did limit myself to 2 hours.. I've got my brace off now and everything looks good. I have full flexiblity which is awesome! The rods and screws hurt under the muscle especially when I sit on a hard chair, it will take a year for the muscle to scar over them.. So that's my only real pain..I'm excersing everyday to build my muscles back up so I can ride soon, and scull on the river, but a wise Dr. at NBC who rides says I should wait a bit before hoping back in the saddle. So I will, but i am jonesing to get back up there.. The view is wonderful..
As for Big B he's in the best hands at NBC. If he had to have a setback I'm glad it was there..

I loved the paperback so much that I bought the hardback coffee table edition several years ago as well. It has more pix and is larger(of course) and easier to handle/read. Did you gals know that Laura Hillenbrand was ill with chronic fatigue syndrome and violent dizziness and bedridden when she wrote this awesome book? Hi everyone:
Glad you are doing better Sabina!
Here's the guidelines for calling representatives and senators. These are the guidelines given by many aides. They were cooperative and insightful.
Also, the booklet of information you can send to the aides is done. Some tweaking is being done and it should be ready this afternoon. I'll post when it's ready.
    Daryl!

Hi everyone: Plans for fighting the slaughter industry!

In talking with a senator?s aide he said organized call-ins carry only so much weight. The senators and representatives know the majority of Americans are against slaughter. But the question is what does the public know about the slaughter industry? The aide told me that the senators know this is an emotional issue and most people who are in support of a ban on slaughtering are approaching the issue and their position on emotion. They want to know that people know the FACTS!

Congress is going to vote on facts, not emotion. So they want the public, the very people who call in, to understand how the landscape of the horse world changes when a ban is put into effect. They, congress, want to know the same thing. It's up to us to tell them. This is not the only issue they face, as we all know. We must be informative. Calling and saying you support the anti-horse slaughtering bill has little impact.

    Here?s the guidelines:
    1. Call your senators and representatives.
    2. Ask if anyone in the office has been specifically assigned to research the bill (provide bill number). This is key. Now you have a point person with knowledge, not someone who merely answers the phone.
    3. Whoever you talk to, first announce your position on the anti-horse slaughtering bill, that you strongly support the bill and are against horse slaughter!
    4. Get the aides name.
    5. Ask the aide if the senator or representative has voiced his/her position on the bill.
    6. If the aide says no ask where the senator or representative stood on last year?s bill. This gives you direction.
    7. If the senator or representative has not voiced their position or has voiced opposition: give the aide two reasons why you are for the bill (there will be many reasons to choose from in the booklet that I am working on).
    8. Ask the aide if he/she has any questions about what you have said.
    9. Tell the aide you are going to forward more information to him/her. Ask for the aide's e-mail address and also ask for a mailing address. Key: do not ask if you can send info, kindly tell the aide you are sending info.
    10. Tell the aide you will call back in a few days to see if he/she has any questions about the info you have sent.
    11. If the senator or representative you are calling has not voiced his/her position or has voiced opposition ask the aide for the protocol for setting a meeting with the senator or representative. Ask when the senator or representative will be back in your state.
    12. Do not let aides brush you off. Push back when you feel you are being slighted. Be calm, professional but firm!

These guidelines get the aides involved. Asking them if they understand what you have said, telling them you will forward info and telling them you are going to follow up and ask if they have questions about the info gets them active. What you are doing is building a conduit into the pipeline of information that we did not have last year. The pro-slaughter people do not just call in and say they are against a ban and then hang up. They are organized and part of their structure is to feed information into the political pipeline.

Officials will respond to information presented in an intelligent and professional manner. Merely calling in and saying you support the bill rings hollow! And that?s from the "horses? mouths" ("directly from" many aides I talked to)!

Thanks to everyone. You are all wonderful people who are in this fight to save our horses.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at my e-mail address.

    Hi Janice from Florida,

Alex had this article posted in an earlier update. I saw it in yesterday's newspaper as well.

Two of three US horse slaughter plants under threat
    January 21, 2007

The Humane Society of the United States, which has been campaigning to ban the slaughter of American horses for export for human consumption, hailed a decision yesterday by the US Court of Appeals overturning a lower court decision that invalidated a 1949 Texas state law banning the sale of horsemeat for human consumption.

The Humane Society argued in defence of the Texas law barring the slaughter of American horses for human consumption overseas.

The decision comes in the same week that a proposed law banning the slaughter of horses made its return to Congress.

"This is the most important court action ever on the issue of horse slaughter," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society in commenting on the Texas ruling. "A federal appeals court has ruled that America's horses can no longer be slaughtered in Texas and shipped to foreign countries for food."

"When this ruling is enforced, a single plant in Illinois will stand alone in conducting this grisly business."

The criminal code of Texas has long prohibited the sale or possession of horse meat, but the law has never been enforced. In 2002, responding to citizen and local government concerns about the two foreign-owned horse slaughter plants in the state, then-Texas Attorney General John Cornyn issued a written opinion that the 1949 Texas law applies and may be enforced.

In response, the Tarrant County District Attorney attempted to enforce the law, but last year a federal district court in Texas ruled that the law was repealed by another statute and was pre-empted by federal law. The District Attorney appealed that decision last year, and was supported by the Humane Society in briefing before the Court of Appeals.

In its decision, the court flatly rejected the slaughterhouses' arguments that the ban on the sale of horsemeat did not protect horses from theft and abuse, and that regulating horse slaughter can achieve those same purposes, noting instead that "it is a matter of commonsense that ... alternatives ... do not preserve horses as well as completely prohibiting the sale and transfer of horsemeat for human consumption."

The court noted that the horse on the Texas trail is a cinematic icon, but "not once in memory did the cowboy eat his horse".

The Court of Appeals also quickly brushed aside the slaughter plants' arguments that the Texas law at issue was invalid under state and federal law, noting that the Texas law "has not been repealed or pre-empted by federal law," and that "several states have already banned its commercial use for human consumption."

"The Texas law prohibiting the sale of horse meat for human food could hardly be any more explicit," said Jonathan Lovvorn, vice president of animal protection litigation for the Humane Society. "The court's decision means that any individual employee or corporation involved in the horse slaughter business in Texas now stares straight ahead at criminal prosecution."

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 100,800 American horses were slaughtered in three foreign-owned slaughter houses in 2006. Opponents of the slaughter ban argue the practice constitutes a humane way to kill old animals, but investigations by the society show cruelty and abuse throughout the process. USDA statistics show that more than 92 per cent of horses slaughtered in the US are not old and infirm but in good condition.

Legislation to ban the slaughter of American horses nationwide was introduced this week in the 110th Congress, and this court ruling will give further momentum to the federal legislative effort, the society believes.

The measure received strong bipartisan support in the 109th Congress, winning a vote of 263 to 146 in the House. It stalled in the Senate in late 2006, however, and was not brought up for a vote before Congress adjourned, even though a similar effort had been overwhelmingly approved by the Senate in 2005.

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation's largest animal protection organisation, with nearly 10 million members and constituents. The non-profit body is based in Washington and has field representatives and offices across the country.

    Slaughter plan
Thanks, Cathy, for reminding us to get the word out to our friends and relatives to call their two senators and their one representative. Since we are now doing a small list, and we have been asked not to do frequent or blanket calling, it is more important than ever to have lots of people make the call.

Remember, we are not calling every day now, so this is a simple favor to request of people you know. They should just call, ask whether their senator or rep supports the bill, thank them if the answer is yes, call back in a week if the answer is "still undecided". If the answer is no, don't engage them in long discussions; if they would like more information, simply refer them to websites like HSUS.

This all fits into the overall national strategy that Shelley A and Debra WI have been asked to pass along to us.

And keep your fingers crossed about Texas. Please say some prayers for the District Court judge so that he'll do the right thing if he's asked to enjoin further slaughter pending appeal!

Since HR 503 just got introduced as well as the Senate Bill S.311, we are in the process of building the co-sponsorship list. The co-sponsorship list is important because it shows how much support the bill has among members of Congress and often times leads those members in leadership positions to take action on bills that have significant support.

So at this point, we are encouraging folks to contact their US Representative and ask them to co-sponsor HR 503, and also to contact their 2 Senators and ask them to cosponsor S. 311 - The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. (so they will need to make 3 calls total!).

Thanks so much for all your work to protect horses!
Thanks Debra! This will be an amazing help!

    Sabina -
So happy to see your post and that you are coming along. I look at your picture often, with Barbaro being raised from the pool, and as they say a picture says a thousand words, this one truly does. It represents so much. Care, concern, courage (by Barbaro and Dr. R), the skill of a brilliant physician, amazing technology and miracles. It's one of the best pictures I have ever seen.

Here is a very informative and enlightening article link about Laura Hillenbrand that she wrote about herself. It explains alot about CFS and her illness. I can totally identify with parts of her illness as I have had the vertigo problems, and epstein-barr tests always come back positive on me too.(they say I am always "iffy" on mono spot test as well) She has been through so much, wait til you read this-you will not believe how much she has had to deal with. http://www.cfids-cab.org/MESA/Hillenbrand.html

    Dear FOB's,
We heard late Saturday evening about the 'plants' in Texas closing. Here in New Mexico we are EXTREMELY concerned about horses being taken south of the border. There is not much to stop this traffic, except for Coggins, so PLEASE, continue to call your Reps and Senators. The "TRANSPORTATION" needs to be stopped.

As it was, I had many phone calls yesterday concerning lots of horse trailer traffic. There are only 2 north/south interstates running through here, so this traffic is easy to spot.

I don't want to be negative here, but we must continue our efforts. Plant closings do not mean in any way, shape or form that horses are safe. In actuality, they may be in more danger.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Yes, we are ecstatic over the TX ruling but it doesn't stop the plant in Illinois or the transport across the border. And folks....please remember the story of White Mare.....slaughter is far more horrific in Mexico. I feel the urgency to pass the Bill even greater to save our horses from the horrors across the border.

I was looking at some Barbara Livingston's pictures and ones that got my attention today was Barbaro getting a bath. I guess he has not had a good bath since his injury. If I was him that would be the top of my list this Spring when he is out in the green green grass of HOME! And his Mommy needs to give the first one.

###Jane in CT---I didn't realize you worked as a proofreader! I'm an editor who does freelance proofreading on the side---sadly, my eyes are usually too tired to do much reading for pleasure. I couldn't put down Seabiscuit (the book) though, read it cover to cover in a weekend. Hillenbrand's meticulous footnotes are worth the purchase by themselves---she did such a fantastic job. Though I don't think anything can touch the book, the movie's wonderful too---I saw it in the theater, where the racing scenes are so awe-inspiring (Santa Anita is GORGEOUS!). I had to catch it the other night though, just so I could get another good cry. Sigh, what a great story.

At one time a while back there were 3 slaughtering plants in Texas. I live in West Texas and there was one about 70 miles from the city I live in. One day a man pulling a trailer stopped at my brothers house to ask directions as to the location to the plant. My brother happened to have a few acres within the city limits. The horse was horribly thin and his eyes were dull and he looked like he hardly had the strength to stand. My brother told the man he would give him the same money as the plant would therefore saving gas. The man agreed. My brother didnt even know if the horse would live or not. His name was Buster. Buster was given the best of care and finally he was at an ideal weight and resumed his health. Buster was sold to a girl that rode in rodeo parades and he was kept in a very nice stable and she rode him everyday. Not long after I saw Buster in a large parade. His eyes were bright and he was groomed to a shine. He had a parade saddle with silver trim and was prancing and he looked so proud. I am glad to say the plant closeby Lubbock was closed due to the owner closing it down. It is my hope that we can save thousands more like Buster as the Houston Federal Appeals court has ruled that the horse slaughter in Texas is illegal. All animals are Gods creatures and it is our duty and responsibility to care for them. I am proud to be a FOB.

Thank you for sharing that wonderful story of Buster. It amazes me the misinformation the pro-slaughter would like us to believe that most horses are unwanted. Unwanted by who? Just because the present owner no longer wants that horse doesn't mean it's not wanted elsewhere. I now have one of those "unwanted" horses who just missed a full truck. He is most wanted now and is a wonderful horse. Go figure.

No matter how the Eclipse Awards turn out this evening, you're the HOTY in my book...hands down! In any case, you don't need an award to highlight your accomplishments. You've accomplished so much more than simply being a champion racehorse. You've inspired so many people to get involved in issues of far greater importance than any sport. You've inspired people to become stronger individuals and to face adversity with courage, determination, and grace. Most importantly, you've shown us that the bond between humans and animals is capable of bringing out the very best in us. For all of these things, there is no possible award that befits you...you have already won it all. Thank you Barbaro. I love you.

    The miracle continues...

    Hi Everyone!!

I feel so fortunate today for so many reasons:

One of the best football games I ever watched took place yesterday between the Patriots and the COLTS! Incredible game with all the drama and suspense you could ask for. When the COLTS won this game, the first thought that came to my mind was "Omen" ... this is an Omen that THIS IS THE YEAR OF THE HORSE! And so I was deeeeelighted to see that the COLTS won this game ... a definite good sign for THE HORSES. I came here now to read posts and so many of you thought the same thing when the COLTS won yesterday! Congratulations all the way around, to the Indianapolis COLTS, to their fans, and to the HORSEY COLTS who will flourish and prosper just as much in 2007. So, now I have my Super Bowl team to root for ... COLTS ALL THE WAY with Barbaro Manning ... oops, I mean Peyton Barbaro ... oops, I mean Peyton B. Manning leading his troops across the Finish Line ... oops, I mean End Zone to Victory!!

We miss you and your pictures tremendously!! Stay well and listen to THE Doctor, and you know which one I'm referring to! LOL
    ################

Horse Slaughter .... it's so encouraging to read about the Texas plants "on the brink of obsolescence" ... it's just another positive "sign" of what will happen this year ... a Victory for the Horses in Congress with the passage of HR503/S311. Consider the TX news a precursor of what is to come, but we still need to do what is asked of us to make this bill a law:

Contact your 1 District Representative and your 2 Senators from YOUR HOME STATE and urge them to Co sponsor if they have not yet done so, or thank them for their past and continued support of either HR503 or S311 and ask for their help in moving this along for a swift vote and passage. This is exactly what we are being asked to do right now and the people who know best are advising us the most direct course of action to victory. We do need to heed, listen and act, always with professionalism, courtesy and respect for all ... strong-arm tactics or force does not work and will have an adverse effect on what we want to achieve. We are representing Barbaro and Gretchen and Roy Jackson at all times, so class, style, grace and humility are the "rules of code" for this mission.
    #####################

ECLIPSE AWARDS TONIGHT! OH BOY!!! I am seeing OUR BOY win ... I can hear the name being called ... "And the winner is "BARBARO!!" Let's all just focus on the best possible result together and all of this positive energy will make it's way toward Barbaro's Award!!!! You Go, Big Boy! The Winner's Circle again awaits you, Barbaro!!!

I just received this email from the Humane Society:

    January 22, 2007

    Dear Friend,

We are one step closer to a ban on horse slaughter!

On Friday, Jan. 19, after years of litigation, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit finally upheld a 1949 Texas law banning the sale of horsemeat for human consumption. The Humane Society of the United States had filed an amicus brief in the case in March 2006, arguing in favor of the state law banning horse slaughter. Two of the three existing horse slaughter facilities in the United States are located in Texas, and as soon as the ruling goes into effect, Illinois will stand alone as the last state where American horses are slaughtered for foreign diners.

Last week, U.S. Reps. Janice Schakowsky (D-IL), Ed Whitfield (R-KY), John Spratt (D-SC), and Nick Rahall (D-WV), and U.S. Sens. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and John Ensign (R-NV) introduced H.R. 503/S. 311, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. This legislation would ban horse slaughter in the U.S. and stop the export of horses for slaughter across our borders. Take action to help protect American horses forever!

In the 109th Congress, the U.S. House voted five times and the U.S. Senate voted once to stop horse slaughter, but time ran out before the legislation crossed the finish line. Now, at the beginning of the 110th Congress and with this major Texas court ruling, we are poised for a big push to protect all American horses from this horrible fate. We are coming at the horse slaughter industry from all directions, and they are operating on borrowed time.

We want to shutter these plants for good but we cannot do it without your pledge to be involved every step of the way. We'll need your action, so please be on the lookout for our updates. With your continued phone calls and emails, Congress will get the job done and save 100,000 horses per year from this grim and painful end. Let's start now by encouraging lawmakers to cosponsor H.R. 503/S. 311 to build support for a permanent ban. With your help, we can make this a historic year for horse protection.

And don't forget to tell your friends and family to let their legislators know that it's time to end the brutal slaughter of America's horses.

Your actions will not only make a difference, they will help make history. Help us end horse slaughter in the United States forever.

    Sincerely,

Barbaro - you know and I know that you are the Horse of the Year, the Horse of the Decade, AND the Horse of the Century. If the rest of the world doesn't already know that, I have to wonder just where in the world have they been all these many months when you have been showing us what the true meaning of the word "Champion" is. Well, Champ, it's their loss and our gain. You just keep doing what you're doing, I'll keep sending you love, kisses, hugs, energy and healing light. We know what's important, and we know what a miracle looks like. It looks just like Barbaro Jackson, there's no question about it. So here's to you Champion Barbaro, and to a long, comfortable and happy life.

    I believe in miracles
    I believe in you, Barbaro.

Wow, Alex thanks for the article about the MO Horses ready for adoption! Quote from the article: "In fact, a group known as the Friends of Barbaro have greatly contributed to their veterinary bills" How AWESOME is this! I'm so happy to have been able to (and continue to be) a sponsor for the rescued horses and to be an FOB!

BARBARO, Hope you're having a fine day. I look forward to officially hearing you named horse of the year. You are definitely MY horse of the year, horse of the decade... You're one of a kind, stupendously special, simply irresistable.....Sure hope the people who's votes are counted think so....I find it difficult to see how it could be anyone other than you!

FRIENDS, I made my 3 phone calls today...Hillary, Chuckie and James Walsh. Their receptionists all took my message about the Anti-Slaughter Bill. It was very easy to call, as I'll bet most of you have already found. Mr. Walsh's person even said he would call the congressman and let him know. I suppose he's in Washington today.

I also worry what will happen next. If the Texas houses get shut down, what's to stop them from taking their business elsewhere? I guess I think with blinders on....I can't understand WHY anyone, anywhere would want to eat "horse" (or "dog", or "cat" for that matter). I'll stop with this now, I think I am risking a vegetarian lecture. LOL

FYI, MR. Journalist, I am NOT an Oprah fan either. I have nothing against her. I think she is probably a very smart and caring lady BUT I have never even watched a show. (Not more than a few occasional fleeting minutes of a show or two that may have been on a tube I was near while waiting for an appointment or something).Oprah for president? Don't be ridiculous. .....It's sad to think Mr. Maese's article will be taken as gospel truth just because it was printed in the newspaper. Do you "friends" know what I mean? My mother's 87 now, and when she knew enough to read the paper (before her dementia) if I ever questioned something in the news she would always respond, "Well it's in the paper." LOL

VICKI, Good Luck with your surgery on Thursday. I'll say an extra prayer for you.

LYN GILBERT, Thanks for your offer for a Messaging pic. I'll try to remember to email you with my address.

JACKSON'S and RICHARDSON'S (&CO, NBC, etc.)HAVE FUN TONIGHT. It's your night to SHINE (and be sure to basque in your own glow a little, you ar all so deserving)...I know hard work awaits you all as soon as you get back...THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO. THANK YOU FOR SHARING BARBARO WITH ALL OF US, (for letting us know him a little bit more and therefore love him more, too)

ALEX, Thank you, too. My guess for the 4th Steeplechase jockey is MICHAEL MATZ.

Gotta run, hope I didn't forget anyone.

Impatiently waiting for Monday's update; haven't seen one since last Thursday. When I tried to check in Friday, I found I had no internet connection. OY!

    ######
Hay, all - my modem fried last Friday and I have been off-line until moments ago. Been going through major Barbaro withdrawal; if it weren't for Stephanie and Margie (whose phone numbers I have) I wouldn't have known what's going on; learned that Barbaro's updates continue to be positive (Friday through Sunday), and about the thrilling Texas judicial decision. But until just now, skimming the posts here, I had thought it was a STATE judicial decision. I am stoked now to learn it was a FEDERAL one. This is a much bigger deal, IMO. Any news about what it all means in the big scheme of things? Does it mean there was no "red Monday" in Texas today? Inquiring horse-loving minds want to know!

Just wanted to check in and say "Hay" to all and that I am SOOOO glad to be back. Came here before even checking any of my emails.

Have my TV ready to go to TVG (602 on DirecTV) at 3 pm Central time for the "Red Carpet" portion of the Eclipse Awards. Apparently the actual awards don't come on until 9 pm Central time. I can hardly wait. Looking forward to seeing Team Barbaro getting their special awards - and just maybe, we'll get a big surprise after all.

Yesterday we lost Gizmo, my friend/upstairs-neighbor/music partner's doggie, the 16 year old Japanese Chin with congestive heart failure, whose "nanny" I was; he was comfortable and eating until the very last day. TG for the emergency vet on Sundays. Giz wouldn't take his pills from anybody but me so I had to be home twice a day every day for the past 14 months. Funny, I'm not that thrilled about regaining my "freedom." But still, am looking forward to the ability to travel a bit.

LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH

You make us feel warm and comfy on a dreary day, even when it is your dreary day. At the end of each of the days that have passed we are glad we have ran the race with you. As others have said the award has been won by you time and time again.

Next year or 25 years from now you will still be Barbaro the amazing horse that won the hearts of many.

When I am old, cankerous, and wrinkled I will look back and know that I was a part of the Barbaro familee.

##Chris - only TVG is showing the awards, starting at 6pm, for 4 hours they have interviews, show past performances, etc. The award presentations start at 10 and last year went until after midnight. Check the sports bars in your area - all of them should have direct TV or dish network.

There are many sports bars in Florida that have TVG - Monday is not crowded - no football. I have TVG but when I am in a sports bar I ask them to turn on TVG and they always do.

Praying for immediate action of the ruling to spare the lives of many innocent horses.

Sorry to hear about Beans - Joe is such a wonderful person. Thank goodness he took that poor blind mare. Bless him.

Go to Google and plug in TVG and when you get to the site they will offer a menu of "where to watch"...they then ask for your zip code and then the station TVG will be posted. Mine gave me a pay per view channel and 405 which is a Dish top 150 channel. Good Luck.

Lisa, I am thrilled that you not only have Mink home but are going to help other puppies as well. You may have to get a bigger house...I know if I did it they might all come home with me!

Mink is lucky to have such a mom as you--you stuck with it and got her home...that's so great.

Just saw Dr. Dean being interviewed on the Eclipse Award Show :) Did a good job, (of course), though I think he is a bit more comfortable in his 'natural' surroundings. He was humble and gracious and showed his sense of humor as well! For a brief time, the cameras cut away to show the waiters folding napkins and putting finishing touches on the tables....I was less than enchanted! Do I CARE about the tables when our HERO is being interviewed?! He will be back at NBC tomorrow:)

    Dearest Barbaro ...

So you were your "usual self" today ... not even the least bit "anxious" over YOUR Big Awards Show tonight? Nah ... just taking it all in stride, eh?

Well you got a big grooming today from Tom so are you already in your "Derby Suite" at the Beverly Wilshire? I hope they've made it comfy enough for "Your Royal Highness", complete with sling, should you need it, LAEL grass imported from Mom Jackson's farm, your favorite apples, pears, spearmints and baby carrots WITH the greens on top, and a couple of stud muffins just for good measure! Nothing's too good or too much for THE ANNOINTED ONE!!

So, tell me Bobby, are you bored by all of this 4 hour Red Carpet nonsense? Well, just tell them to "cut to the chase" and give out the awards already because you have a very special plane to catch later tonight and you don't have time for all of this 'falderal'. Just tell 'em, Bobby!!

So, are they putting you in a "horsey tux" tonight? I hope it comes equipped with special patent leather shoes that are custom-made just for you. And I hope you told them the color that would best show off your Bay colors ... hmmm ... navy blue, maybe? Well, it's your choice, after all, because YOU ARE THE STAR AND YOU ARE THE HORSE OF THE YEAR, NO MATTER WHAT!! So, just strut your stuff, my dearest Barbaro and show 'em how it's done ... and don't let anyone else near you by at least 6 1/2 lengths tonight! They all need to realize they are "in the presence of greatness" and must respect that completely.

Also, I hope they gave you a "Red, Red Rose" to wear in your mane tonight, as you strut to the stage to accept your most deserving award. You are gonna knock 'em out tonight, my Barbaro!!

    Just "DO IT!!"

    Optimistic words on Barbaro
    By JAY PRIVMAN
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Dr. Dean Richardson, in Beverly Hills to share in racing's Eclipse Awards, said on Monday that Barbaro is being weaned from pain medication and is becoming more comfortable on his laminitic left hind foot, two weeks after suffering a setback.

"He has steadily improved," said Richardson, who has treated Barbaro at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center since the colt's catastrophic injuries in the Preakness Stakes eight months ago. "He's eating great. He hasn't been in a sling in over a week. The fact that he bounced back, and quickly, is very encouraging. It's still disappointing that he had a setback, but these types of things are not unexpected."

Richardson made his comments before being presented by the Turf Publicists of America with the group's Big Sport of Turfdom Award, which recognizes individuals for their assistance with the media. Barbaro's owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, and the New Bolton Center were to be presented with a special Eclipse Award Monday night for their attempts to save Barbaro.

The fractures Barbaro suffered initially in his right rear leg have mended, but the laminitis he developed in his left rear has proved more troublesome. A cast that was placed on that foot following surgery 10 days ago has yet to be removed, so Richardson said he has yet to ascertain how well the foot is healing. However, Richardson said, Barbaro "stands on it," whereas when he had his setback two weeks ago, "he wouldn't put it down."

"We've been able to decrease his pain medication," Richardson said. "He's not sedated. It's to address his hind foot."

Richardson said that if and when Barbaro is relocated to Kentucky, his care would be handed off, most likely, to Dr. Scott Morrison of Rood and Riddle Equine Clinic.

"But this was a significant setback, so I don't think he'll leave for at least a month, and it could easily be longer," Richardson said.

"He's a smart, enduring, tough kind of horse," Richardson said. "I think this shows that a lot of horses can behave like this if given the opportunity. Most horses who make it this long go home. I'm hoping he's one of those.

"It's awkward getting an award like this because we're not done. We haven't finished the job. Trying to reconcile that, I hope the award is for the effort that has been made, and for the ongoing effort. I hope something good comes out of this. I'm just a small part of this. Barbaro is the biggest part."

More Barbaro news from Dr. R today...

    Barbaro veterinarian receives accolade
    BETH HARRIS
    Associated Press
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Barbaro has steadily improved since having surgery on his left hind hoof, although the Kentucky Derby winner has yet to return outside and will be hospital-bound for at least another month.

"He's bright, happy, eating," chief surgeon Dr. Dean Richardson of the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center said Monday.

Barbaro, plagued by the often-fatal hoof disease called laminitis, had surgery Jan. 13 to remove a section of the hoof.

"Since that time, we've been steadily decreasing the amount of medication he's on," Richardson said. "He's not sedated, it's just pain medication for his hind foot."

Richardson was in Beverly Hills to receive the Big Sport of Turfdom award from the Turf Publicists of America for his contributions to thoroughbred racing last year.

"It's very awkward to receive an award for something you think you haven't done," he said before the presentation. "I don't really think we've finished the job. I hope the award is for the effort and the ongoing efforts to do what's best for the horse."

Barbaro's owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, along with New Bolton Center were to receive the Special Eclipse Award later Monday for outstanding individual achievements or contributions to thoroughbred racing.

Richardson singled out the Jacksons in accepting his award.

"Gretchen and Roy pretty much define what makes the thoroughbred racing business, with their class, their compassion and their love of the animal," he said.

Barbaro had the recent operation after nearly seven months of promising recovery from laminitis.

"It's still disappointing that we had a setback, but it's not unexpected. We knew all along that that part of the hoof was very, very questionable," Richardson said, adding that Barbaro could remain hospitalized "for at least a month. It could easily be longer."

Barbaro has been at New Bolton in Kennett Square, Pa., since shattering three bones in his right rear leg at the start of the Preakness Stakes last May. Richardson said his timetable for Barbaro to get back outside is "all based on comfort."

"As soon as he gets comfortable enough and the weather is acceptable, we'll let him go back out because it perks him up so much, to just see some sun," he said. "You can tell he enjoys it."

Richardson has been amazed at Barbaro's attitude toward his human handlers while confined to his stall, including allowing the veterinarian to work on him untranquilized.

"He'll let you feed him snacks with him sacked out on his side, perfectly awake," he said. "He's learned to trust people a lot. That's why I think he's smart. Not every horse learns that, but he learned."

Richardson has had three or four other horses hospitalized under his care for as long as Barbaro.

"Most of the ones that have been there that long usually go home, if they make it this far," he said. "I'm hoping he's going to be one of those."

My dear Judy in CT ... I thought I had the rough draft but I wanted the true essence of your comments so I cheated. Yes I did. I took your beautiful words and asked BabelFish to translate for me and here's what they told me you said:

Can't you just see him.."hey nurse, yes you, bring me a carrot in bed"!

Plus they think he can leave in 1+ months. Wow, has he bounced back!!!!

Congratulations to Dr. Richardson on receiving the Big Sport of Turfdom, an honor he certainly deserves.

Good luck to the Jacksons, Edgar Prado, and, of course, Barbaro, at the Eclipse Awards this evening. They are already the winners, as far as I'm concerned. (This obviously includes Michael Matz too!) Great champions, each and every one of them.

Time to wish you good night honey. May tonight bring you peaceful, healing rest, filled with comfort and renewal of strength. Close those beautiful eyes of yours, and slip away into blissful slumber, knowing that you are so very loved by so many people. Rest well sweet boy. I love you Barbaro.

    The miracle continues...

Posted by: Sandie at January 23, 2007 1:09 AM

Glad to hear that Barbaro is improving. He is not missing much outside right now with all the cold weather. Hopefully he will be strong enough to go outside soon...and the weather will cooperate.

Today I found a sick pigeon in NYC. Other pigeons were picking on him, and he was otherwise all alone on the city street. I bought a newspaper and took the front page to wrap him up so that I could hold him and keep him warm. He was obviously dying, which utterly broke my heart. I needed to catch a train out of the city...so I found a semi-secluded bush (as secluded as anything can be in NYC), which happened to be near the door of a church, and placed him underneath so that he would be protected from any precipitation and other birds. I kept the newspaper on him like a blanket so that he would be warm. Now I feel guilty that I did the wrong thing. I feel like I should have stayed with him until he passed away so that he wouldn't have to be alone...and so that I could know that he was safe. I hope that no one shoo-ed him away from the church grounds.

Please say a prayer for this dying bird and for all animals. My heart breaks for any who are lonely or hurting. No animal deserves to suffer in any way.

    Thanks for listening.

Sweet Linnie~ I am so happy you liked the words I wrote to our boy in such a glorious language. It is like music in the mouth, yes? 'Cento per cento' actually means 100%, but I like the way 'hundreds for hundreds' sounds.. very eloquent. And with a glass of pinot, I say, alla salute, Barbaro!!

    Avete un buon cuore, Linnie.

I don't know about the rest of you, but as far as I'm concerned, Dr. Richardson's upbeat report is the best award of all!

I am sticking on the phrase "most horses who make it this long go home" from Dr. R's interview tonight posted in the comments above. I think this is a huge statement. Also huge that Dr. R is making the point that fighting laminitis is a worthwhile endeavor with a potentially successful outcome. Wonderful that Barbaro's injuries can highlight the possibilities for future horses with similar injuries. I am so proud for Barbaro and his team today.

Thank you, Laurie, but the Very Special Tuck-in ritual belongs only to you!! And I wait for that each night!! But ... this is going to be a late night for OUR BOY because after he receives HIS award, he IS going to go out with Dr. R, Mom and Dad, Michael, Edgar, etc. and celebrate with Barbalot, Barbarotinis and BarbarBrewskis! He's going to be one very inebriated horsey tonight!!! And a very dizzy one, too!

Good for you, Bobby!! "Celebrate, Celebrate, Dance to the Music!!"

Bless your heart LR. Don't feel guilty. You did more than most would have. I'm very grateful to you for giving that little pigeon some compassion and tenderness. Your kindness will come back to you, and deservedly so. Thank you for caring. Wish all people had your kind heart.

    ## Great interview with Dr. R tonight, he had very positive words for Barbaro and looked very optimistic.

Interesting on the why the Eclipse Awards are named Eclipse. He was a horse hundreds of years ago who never raced until he was 5 and was undefeated after 18 races. They said 95% of thoroughbreds can trace their heritage to him.

Lisa - glad to hear you have your baby home.

Gary Stevens and most of the TVG announcers believe BARBARO should be 3year old of the year!

Speaking of birds........one of the best ways to save a bird is to prevent our cats from killing them. The number one killer of song birds is the domestic house cat. Be aware of what your cat is doing on his/her outside adventures. They have been known to decimate the song bird population in neighborhoods. I know the come back is well, that's what cat's do naturally. Well, look at it this way, cats are not endangered but some song birds are.

    HI, FOB's!

    ###
LR, you did the right thing. Avi's owner found a baby doe that died overnight. But she was able to make a brief connection with it - I was able to see it for a little bit, but we didn't want to touch it in case its mother came back for her. She is blaming herself for its death, but I feel it came to her for that brief connection. You showed very deep kindness and compassion and you will be blessed as will Janet.

    ###
Lisa, please give Mink a big welcome-home hug from me. Am so happy things worked out for you.

    ###
Designgirl - my sympathies for your father's transition. The love that is there will keep his spirit close by when you need it. Both of my parents passed and I feel them constantly.

Can't wait to read about the Eclipse Awards. Keeping my fingers crossed that Team Barbaro wins more than one award tonight.

Barbaro, keep resting, keep recovering. Winter is finally here in Chester County and its just plain cold.

    Take care, everybody!

Hiya, Bobbey! Wow, it is snowing very prettily here in coastal CT tonight. I hope that you are warm and cozy in your stall and that someone brougth you some Lael grass on behalf of Mrs. J. today. You should receive our "get well" card by the middle of this week, sweet prince. Wishing you sweet dreams of sunshine, buttercups, and frisky fillies! Hugs, pets, & "scratches" from your pals in CT - Robyn, Brent, & Nikita (the Husky who is very excited by the snow!)

    #### To Lisa Leach: Yippee, Mink is home!
To Sandra: Thank you for the lovely story of Buster, whom your brother saved from a ghastly and premature end.
To Dora: I loved picturing you standing on a step-ladder, primping our Sublime One with tons of hair care products. You'd be a stylist to a star!
To Sabina Pierce: How thrilling that you are able to work again. Steady as you go! Thanks for writing us today.
To CJ: Please accept my condolences on the passing of Gizmo, your friend's dog.
To LR: How kind of you to show comfort to the dying pigeon in the City today. You did a wonderful thing for this creature, so much more than many passers-by would have done. Namaste!
To Designgirl7: My sympathies to you and your family upon the passing of your Father. My Dad died in 2003 and I always think how much he would've loved to see Barbaro's win in the Derby. He attended every KY Derby from the time that he was 13 or 14 years old through his last year of life.
To Vicki Jasch: Thinking about you and sending you thoughts for a speedy recovery from your surgery this week.
To Jean & Bobbie B.: I always appreciated Joyce Moore's willingness to share her obvious knowledge about horses with those of us who love them from afar. Bobbie, would you please convey my thanks (and that of Jean) to Joyce? I hope that she'll return to the "big board" soon.

Your right, I don't have cats. And try to run off any that come to my yard. Have lots of bird feeders out. My morning coffee is with the birds feeding. Just love it! My little peace of heaven in the morning. The cats will kill the birds and leave them. But my two Boston terriers keep most of the cats away. But the dogs are in side most of the time. I have two fixed males.

    Debbie,
Sounds like an ideal situation. Bird feeders are a great way to attract them to your yard and enjoy them. I work with a wildlife rescue group and I do hear awful stories about cats. As much as I like them, I do tend to root for the "under dog", in this case - the birds!

More Dr, R news from the Thoroughbred Times on Barbaro..as Alex says here are the highlights (maybe we should send to Mr. Zast)...

    Turf publicists honor Richardson

“This has been a quite a year,” Richardson said. “There’s no getting around that. There have been some exhilarating highs and some pretty miserable lows. The fundamental point that we’ve tried to make throughout this is … that we continue to try to do whatever is best for the horse, and that’s because I’ve had the stalwart support the Jacksons. I guess I would point that I certainly wouldn’t be here and Barbaro wouldn’t be here if it were not for the fact that the Jacksons pretty much define what makes the Thoroughbred racing business, with their class, their compassion, and their love of the animal. The recognition of the horse as a partner is the big issue.”

I think he has had a reasonable quality of life in the last 8½, nine months. I’d be lying if I said the time has gone by quickly—it hasn’t. It’s been a long 8½ months. I just hope that things continue to improve, and we get a happy, healthy horse at the end of this."

Please don't doubt or second guess yourself. You did more for the little bird than most people would have done. It was very touching.
If more people had your compassion this world would be a much better place.

    ###

Please everyone don't blame the cats for going after the birds. They are only doing what comes naturally for them. Blame the owners, the cats should not be left out in the first place.

Tom is reporting that you are "his normal self". I don't think your Fans would have it ANY other way!!LOL

Tonight Honey, your Mommy and Daddy will be accepting awards and speaking in front of many people...all about you. (Your Mommy's favorite subject!)

We may be tucking you in in your stall at New Bolton, but Honey, you are at "center stage". Your loved ones are proud to represent you and you are all sooo deserving of every possible accolade. I wish every loved one AND possible award to safely find their way home to Barbaro...

Honey, let's grab your soft, warmer blanket tonight. I brought a fuzzy towel with me so you can wrap your awards up and tuck them in next to you after your Mommy brings them home to you!

We'll pull your blanket up high on your neck and tuck you in nice and tight. Honey, tonight as you nestle your face into the comforting softness of your favorite blanket, let the warmth of love and admiration envelop you into a deep and restful sleep.

As your parents celebrate a part of the inspired world that you have created, follow your Dream Angels to yet another world of promise and beauty. Sweet dreams follow you Barbaro...

While you sleep, let the healing continue and tomorrow, may strength carry you through your day.

I will be here in the morning to see if Alex has anything new to tell us either about you or Fair Hill. Now close your eyes...shhhhhhh. Good night Honey. I love you. XXOOx

    Hello Hope,

How was your day today Little One? I hope it gave you comfort and confidence and extra special treats for your tummy.

Are you ready for your blanket? I think we need your warmer blanket and we'll gently tuck it around your legs to keep any drafts away.

Your beautiful Dream Angels are ready to sweep you away to sweet dreams with love and sunshine!

Now close your eyes and drift away Hope...Good night. I love you. xxoo

    Hello Mink,

I read the news today and your Mommy has been waiting to hold you in her arms again. She will sleep well tonight...

But Mink, you're home now! You will only know security, love and tender care. You are where you belong...

I'm sure your Mommy has wrapped you up in a blanket that will soon become your favorite. She probably hasn't taken her eyes off of you...

Sleep Little One. Let the troubled times go... Your life will be sweet dreams come to life! Enjoy your life Mink...God bless you. xxoo

    ## Just interviewed Mr and Mrs Jackson on TVG. They were very encouraging about Barbaro as was Dr. R earlier tonight.

After their interview, Todd Schrupp quoted Mrs. Jackson from Ladies Home Journal regarding how horse owners need to be more responsible for their animals after racing. Frank Lyons said "how can an industry that loves horses consider slaughter an option? That is totally wrong." Way to go Todd and Frank! Bringing up the slaughter issue during the Eclipse awards.

    Turf publicists honor Richardson

    DEAN RICHARDSON
    Benoit & Associates photo
    By Jeff Lowe

Dean Richardson, D.V.M., chief of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center, received the 41st annual Big Sport of Turfdom award from the Turf Publicists of America on Monday in recognition of his media accessibility while attempting to save the life of Barbaro, winner of Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).

Richardson accepted the award at a luncheon in Beverly Hills, California. He was joined by Barbaro’s owners-breeders, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, and New Bolton staff members.

Richardson, the Jacksons, and the New Bolton staff also were honored a few hours later with the Special Eclipse Award during the Eclipse Awards ceremony.

Just as he has in countless interviews since repairing Barbaro’s shattered right hind leg in a seven-hour operation on May 21, Richardson stressed that the colt is not yet out of the woods.

“We haven’t accomplished anything yet—I’ve said that in every venue that I’ve been allowed to state it—except for perhaps making sure that the public understands what the veterinarian is capable of doing …and probably more important, that there are people in the racing industry who understand the love of the animal as their partner in the sport,” Richardson said. “I guess that would be the thing that I hope we’ve accomplished, because we haven’t finished the job yet. Barbaro still has a ways to go.

“I think he has had a reasonable quality of life in the last 8½, nine months. I’d be lying if I said the time has gone by quickly—it hasn’t. It’s been a long 8½ months. I just hope that things continue to improve, and we get a happy, healthy horse at the end of this."

Mary: You took the words out of my mouth. Just like the trainers - the $. Why have a vote if all you have to do is add up a column of dollar figures.

Jacksons deserved Breeders of the Year on many, many levels!

Mary, yes I hear you, $ talks.

From the piece Mary S posted above, Adena Springs had over 400 horses they bred that started races in 200y. None "tip of the tongue" names, really, but putting that many horses on the track is a good way to bring home the most money.

Posted by: Susan in Saratoga at January 23, 2007 3:50 AM

MARY S - audience not well lit, although I did see a brief interview with them before the start...

Posted by: Nancy in CT at January 23, 2007 3:50 AM

OK now we are really waiting for 3 yo colt of the year!

Posted by: Mary S at January 23, 2007 3:56 AM

no sorry..it is just our award to him

Posted by: Mary at January 23, 2007 3:56 AM

    Mary!!!!!!

Posted by: Mary S at January 23, 2007 3:57 AM

I'm not a turf writer, and don't vote for these awards, but I feel the overall stewaradship the Jacksons showed to a horse they bred deserved the Breeder recognition this year, in addition to the dollars won on the track. Not to detract from the winner, but in how many high volume operations would the principal visit a recuperating horse twice a day in hospital? Regardless who takes home the award, that is the ultimate in responsible breeding, and the Jacksons deserve every accolade.

Posted by: Susan in Saratoga at January 23, 2007 3:57 AM

    I agree 100%

    mary..

then perhaps the writers should do their jobs and get out and WATCH horses and stop believing each others B.S.

as well as to give honors to those that deserve it and not those that churn cash into the industry instead of doing " the right things" for it..

To compare the Jacksons to Stronach is like comparing Satan to Mother Theresa,,I need not detail as to who's who in the cast do I?

Posted by: mike c at January 23, 2007 4:07 AM

Mike C. How can they give this award to Pletcher if he's doing stuff like that, I don't get it?

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at January 23, 2007 4:40 AM

    not a good thing Sarah...

when you train as many as Pletcher and have the quality of horses he has, you can't help but win by osmosis...

He is the horse who calls us to be better than we are. So he could not fit into a 2006 award. Honor Bernardini with this award, and know that Barbaro is the one who calls to us from our souls.

I, for one, feel this world is a whole lot better with Barbaro in it. And the Jacksons, and Dr. Richardson and staff, and each and every one of you. Peace ~

    Cathy Mc,
It is disappointing.............consider the source, a bunch of writers who evidently have agendas that are less than sterling. We know from the facts who the true HOY is!

...and the commentators were right, it wasn't about sentiment!
    WRAP-UP SHOW...
Jockey - "surprised that Edgar defeated Gomez, but Edgar won KD & a Breeder's Cup, numbers very close, 36 graded stakes Gomez, 34 Prado"
"Edgar arrived a long, long time ago...huge rides in big races, big-time performer for years and years"

Owners - "both very deserving" "Showing Up has to be as good a turf horse as any we have in the country"

Male Turf - "most surprising result" "expected Miesque's Approval to be third"

Well I am disappointed that Barbaro did not win..but then perhaps Barbaro is just way too big for the Eclipse awards? He is number one for fights fought..hearts won..the one horse that people on the street can name, a horse that through his dignity in hard times has inspired so many people to fight another day. Champion of Champions.

Okay, I'm bummed that the "business" didn't award our beautiful boy but... Does anyone remember Marguerite Henry books? The horses in her books were special beyond money and wins. They were gloriously full of spirit and life. Barbaro is such a horse. My grandchildren will fall in love with him because he has that spirit and impact on people. Just had to share that. Have a good day tomorrow everyone.

I think Mrs J didn't speak at the Special Eclipse Award because she knew they weren't going to recognize OUR BOY as HOY or 3yr old and she couldn't act happy ......she couldn't fake it cause she's too classy for that and she loves OUR CHAMP too much!!!!

This is extremely hurtful for Team Barbaro !!!!!

    ### Sarah from NC,

You are cracking me up even in my disappointment. However, Barbaro's name will be mentioned more in the days ahead than all of the winners combined.

    ### Nancy, thank you.

Nancy, you get Cub Reporter of the Year!

It was fun here, regardless of some of the outcomes. FOB's used to gather here in the evenings and have fun together--used to do it all the time--now it's usually very quiet here at night.

FOB's, I really enjoyed hanging out with you tonight.

And yes, 30 years from now, Barbaro's name will still bring instant recognition, anecdotes, admiration. No one can diminish that.

Sarah NC -- Yours was the quip of the night!

Also Sarah -- I hear Lizzie gets to Be Like Barbaro...in a crate...Hope that goes okay. Sounds like the vet is optimistic.

As to the awards -- They should have asked us. Since they didn't, it's not too surprising that they completely missed the point of this past year. It was about racing, while Barbaro was around to race. After that, it was about heart and spirit.

    Posted by: Marilyn/CA at January 23, 2007 5:34 AM

Posted by: Maribel at January 23, 2007 5:42 AM

TEARS, TEARS, LOTS OF TEARS...trying to figure out exactly why I'm crying so hard and it's almost funny...we have all (including me) practically humanized Barbaro and I'm crying because I feel sorry for HIM that he didn't win an award...AS IF HE CARES!! He cares about people who love him, he cares about feeling more comfortable each day, he cares about other animals (according to Dr. Richardson), and GOD KNOWS HE CARES ABOUT FOOD!!
So I'm crying like a baby because I'm sad for HIM, not for his humans...sad that he doesn't get an (unattractive) plaque or statue that he might want to eat or piss on, but doesn't understand what it means and also doesn't feel the rejection that WE are feeling on his behalf.
He is HAPPY, at least as happy as possible right now, he is spoiled and loved and supplied with goodies...and those are the things that make his world go round. WE WANTED THIS FOR HIM, and he deserved so much more....but he HAS so much more because he is the stuff of legends...maybe there will be a movie, maybe not...but his story will live on long after I'm gone!

Thank you, Nancy! Your updates were faster than TVG!

I am so proud of Barbaro this night. When I think of all that he has accomplished both on and off of the track, I just smile. Awards are always disappointing to someone, but it was actually a pretty good night. The Jacksons won for best owners (There has never been better owners in the history of horseracing!). Dr. R won the "Big Sport of Turfdom" award (Didn't he look nice all prettied up?). Edgar won for best jockey (so deserved!). And the entire Barbaro Team won a "special" award that is more important than any of the others! They recognize what all the FOB's already knew. Barbaro is soooo special!

Barbaro's life won't be measured by awards, anyway. It will be measured by the impact he has had on horse racing and on horse welfare. Mostly, it will be measured by what this incredible equine has taught us. He is courage, tenacity, and perseverance, personified! He's never met QUIT. As far into the future as anyone can see, the name BARBARO will be up there with Man 'O War, Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Ruffian... He will be remembered forever. Barbaro is Horse of a Lifetime!

Sleep well tonite, sweet Prince. Dream of Anna; she's a cutie! I love you, Bobby, forever.

I bet if more of the sports writers were women they would have voted Big B HOY. These guys don't want to vote for a horse who is down, that would appear unmanly, they want to vote for a horse who looks like a winner, not a horse who has two bad legs and is battling for his life.

I look directly to Barbaro ..... and select one of these: Inspiration, Courage, Will, Focus, Sense of Humor in spite of it all, Heart !
And .... I try to: Act Like Barbaro ..... !

I'm glad I paid the $11 and had TVG added to my collection of channels today ..........

Well said, Judy B. The ones who can read won the awards. Dr Richardson (no other veterinarians were honored tonight.) Edgar, dear Edgar. The Jacksons, twice. With the owner of Bernardini sending them the holy water for Barbaro's leg, it was like family sharing that award with him.

So Barbaro didn't bring home any hardware tonight. While all his people, except for his trainer, did. And the trainer who won did so on hign volume. OK maybe I'm weird, but I'm hearing a pretty big guffaw here, from the horses mouth. Like none of this matters. That the people who needed to win, won.

Well, after that reality check tonight, I realize that of all the people and horses across this country who could have been recognized in this national ceremony, to have been such a PRESENCE among the top flight professionals in this sport, the Barbaro team was probably the "elephant" in the room. Everyone knows how much a miracle this year has been, how much a miracle this horse and his family and caretakers are, and how Barbaro could simply have completely removed the air from this ceremony... leaving everything and everyone else with dregs. I think they fought hard to not let him simply dominate the complete ceremony! The awards that were given are very worthy, and I found myself fighting hard not to be even more greedy! All for Barbaro...

And I was very disappointed that Pine Island was not recognized... dear heart. We think of you tonight and know you are safe with Fog who I am SURE recognizes your formidable talent and sweet nature.

Back to gentle dreams, Barbaro, and let that hoof grow, grow, grow...

Thank you, Nancy in Ct., for your wonderful reporting tonight. It was a lifeline for those of us that couldn't watch the awards. I am, as are so many others, disappointed that Barbaro did not receive an award that I believe he so richly deserved. To be frank, though, I expected nothing more from the voters. Past experience was the guide here. But our beloved Barbaro did not lose tonight. Horse racing lost tonight. And the pity for the industry is that so much of it doesn't even have a clue.

    from Thoroughbred Times...

Kentucky Derby winner Prado captures first Eclipse Award

    By Frank Angst

Veteran jockey Edgar Prado has had several impressive seasons on the track but none with as much sheer joy and utter heartbreak as the 2006 campaign provided.

Prado registered personal-best seasonal earnings of $19,874,606 and joined Jorge Chavez as the second Peruvian jockey this century to win the Kentucky Derby (G1).

In addition to leading Barbaro to victory in the Derby and subsequently saving his life with a heroic effort in the opening moments of the Preakness Stakes (G1), he guided Round Pond to victory in the Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1).

But his first Eclipse Award season will be most remembered for his professional handling of Barbaro, in both good times and bad.

NBC analyst and Racing Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens said Prado acted as Barbaro’s fourth leg after the colt’s heartbreaking injury in the Preakness. Prado’s actions came first in a long line of human care and professionalism devoted to the injured Derby winner.

Later that month, Prado traded the white, royal blue, and Kelly green Lael Stable silks for light blue surgical scrubs as he visited Barbaro at New Bolton Center, returning to the role of encouraging Barbaro.

Barbaro’s connections have repeatedly voiced their appreciation for Prado. With this year’s Eclipse Award, so did the sport.

There really is nothing anyone can say about losing one's parent. I lost my mom when I was 25, and it was the single most saddest event in my life that made me have to grow up really fast. You would assume that at 25 I would be grown, but it takes more than age to mature. I am so deeply saddened by this sudden loss of your dad. I pray you will have someone close to help you through this difficult trying time. I know that counseling and therapy helped my lil sis (she was only 18 at the time). I wish now, I would have availed myself of those helps.Take care of your self and the family. We are all here to support you in any way we can. Peace to you and yours.

I loves me some Color Purple. It is probably one of my favorite movies of these newer type movies. I was shocked and saddened to see it shutout during oscars as well. The oscar people are so fuddy duddy pottie headed anyway.

OMG Have ya'll seen the 1994 edition of "Black Beauty"? I watched it the other night, the dad bought it for like $5 at walmart. It made me cry the entire time I watched it. My eyes still hurt and sting! It is so much sadder than I remember reading when I was a child. The cinematography of the horses is unequaled. I mean the first 10 minutes was worth the price, I got to see a baby foal being born! COOL! This movie is well worth a rental, that is how sad and good it was. 5 stars!

Maribel-Barbaro said that he did not win because of all the hairspray I made him wear tonight. He said he looked like Liberace, all he needed was a glitter cape and a glitter piano!

Posted by: Dora J Crow at January 23, 2007 7:49 AM

I fell asleep watching TV earlier, but woke up at 2am and just scrolled insanely through your comments to find out who won.

I get the gist of it. Can't wait for all those hard-nosed "sports" reporters to gloat over Barbaro not getting an award.

The only award that's really important is him walking out of that stall with a totally healed and healthy hoof.

As for Bernardini...can't wait for the movie about him. Oh wait, no movie? Because no one's heard of him? Oh, but surely he had this great racing career, right? Oh no? Didn't really beat anyone? Retired after one season, even though he was sound? Ah, maybe that's the spirit of racing. Duck 'em all and then go home.

Barbaro, you are THE horse of forever!

They saw only the trees, and not the forest. They couldn't look outside the context of the sport itself, and see it in the bigger picture of what the sport became last year to people in general.

Well, don't bother to watch NBC or ABC or whatever tomorrow (woops, I mean today, this morning) for the big news about Invasor and Bernardini. No one cares.

    Well ggrrrr:

I was hoping for better results than Bernardini winning HOY.

Okay so the horse won more money than Barbaro. Well he had the whole year to race when Barbaro didn't. And Barbaro was UNDEFEATED until that awful day. And when it counted most Bernardini didn't have what it took to win.

Barbaro will always be the People's Prince. He is HOY in our hearts. But better than that Barbaro shows each of us everyday what fighting the good fight is all about. He shows about perseverence under some of the most trying conditions. And not giving up when most would. He truly is

    Good Morning Jane, and Margaret...

Got myself up early...it kind of felt like Christmas morning when I was a little girl. Ya know that feeling of great anticipation? Like something wonderful was going to be downstairs under the Christmas tree, waiting?
Well, I was hoping for that today, but instead I have pangs of jealousy and sadness. Like when, as a little girl, I got downstairs and saw that my brothers had gotten the best presents. Well, metaphorically speaking, I was Barbaro this morning. I should have gotten the best present, because I was way better behaved than my brothers, Bernardini and Invasor were! I did everything right this year. But sometimes things just work out that way. All in all, tho, it still is a beautiful Christmas morning. I'm still breathing, I have a wonderful family, and my best bud, Edgar got the very present I was hoping for! Maybe he'll share it with me!
    Easy come, easy go.

Congrats to Edgar on a job well done and to all the winners. Yes, very disappointed...

(Didn't Barbaro's time in the Derby beat Bernardini's run in the mile and a quarter??)

Barbaro is and will always be our Champion..

    Believe in Barbaro!

Good Tuesday morning Alex, Barbaro and fellow fans

Barbaro - you will always be No. 1 here. On this site you rule. Congrats to Edgar. As long as Barbaro remains on his path of healing, I'm OK with the rest.

Also - hoping for more good news on the slaughterhouse issue. Hoping to see the list of co-sponsors grow.

    have a great day all!

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, fellow Fans!

Some of us are a little sleepy this morning, Big Bay One. We stayed up late "watching" the Eclipse Awards. We were all disappointed you didn't win but you are winning the most important award - "Best Patient at New Bolton Center"! I suspect all your people will be back today because they just can't stay away for very long. Keep on healing, you handsome horse!

I was disappointed about the lack of recognition for Barbaro and also Pine Island. I think the press has an unwritten rule that they don't acknowledge the darker side of this sport - the breakdowns and injuries. They will write about them when they happen and will write about positive reactions (Poly Track) but the awards go to the last horse standing, so to speak. Well, in my mind, the last horse standing will be Barbaro....in a sublime performance!

I will await the ACN and the NBC updates today. Thanks again, Alex for all you do for us.

ha ha -- jane in ct, that's a great reference to norma desmond. what's really important is that barbaro continues to recover and the good equine advocacy work borne out of this site continues. period. have a great day all and let's wish team barbaro safe travels back from california.

Maribel--My thoughts exactly. There were seven awards/honors given last night to either team Barbaro or media outlets covering the Barbaro story. I can't really agrue with Bernardini's choice as 3yo, but of course I wanted Barbaro to win it. What I can argue with is, why couldn't they give Barbaro a special award himself? Without Barbaro's will to live day after day, and his "never quit" attitude, there would have been no Barbaro story. The powers that be did him a grave disservice, but in a few years people may forget who won the 3yo award for males in 2006 but everytime someone looks out and sees Bobby in his paddock, they will know who the real winner turned out to be.

Bobby-have a great Tuesday. Your guys did super last night, I hope they show you the awards today when they get back. Give they all a big "NEIGH" for me.

    Love You,

Interesting analysis re: Pine Island. I hadn't thought of that but it sure sounds logical to me. Sad that type of thinking is what rules the horse recognition world. That would explain Barbaro not winning the eclipse too. He's still standing but not racing.
