    Barbaro Updates: 158

    updates are now here.

Update 1188: At the Press Conference on wednesday I introduced myself to Jack Ireland who writes for the Wilmington News Journal. We discussed Mike Rea and his Homemakeover, and his need to get signatures for his petition. Jack said he would willingly sign so here's the link to sign Jack! As a result of the press conference Jack wrote this (very good) article: Barbaro's popularity continues to soar. It includes the following excerpt:

A big reason Barbaro has become so important to so many is the way he has continually beaten the odds. While he was getting the best care available, it became evident early on that this horse was special. He was a fighter, or as one longtime Delaware Park fan said, "He's a real trooper, isn't he?" People in this country like to root for the underdog -- human or equine.

"I think it's something of a miracle he is here with us," Roy Jackson said. "I don't know exactly what it is, but we have never dwelled on the negative.

You can now vote for racing's moment of the year.

This morning at Fair Hill will be quiet for me for a saturday. Hawty Creek's scheduled half mile work has been postponed. She lost a right front shoe yesterday while jogging down a hill outback. She can't work until I get her reshod, which I hope will be sometime in the next day or so. She'll go outback again today most likely. Tim is going to open gallop Gator Nation (my usual first horse) so it looks like only four to ride and a nice easy morning ahead!

Update 1187: Barbaro is featured in People Magazine this week (top five news story for 2006) as well as Time Magazine.

It is sad to report the passing of Scotty Schulhoffer: Hall of Fame Trainer Scotty Schulhofer Dead at 80. His most recent "big horse" was Lemon Drop Kid.

Let us remember: Remembering Our Champions.

Update 1186: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (thursday night). Mrs. Jackson called (10:15 am) after her morning visit with Barbaro. She was very upbeat in her assessment of Barbaro.

Kathy Anderson also visited Barbaro yesterday. It was Dr. Anderson's first visit for a couple of weeks and she was also very happy with how Barbaro was doing. She noted that while Barbaro is back in his old "unit", he is in fact in a different stall, with a window with a view. He seems to like his new "digs".

These pictures were taken on wednesday of this week: Barbaro's new halter and NBC Tree. I saw the tree on my latest visit to New Bolton, it is very cool!

Thanks to Mrs. Jackson for the morning update!!

Thank you, Alex, for all you to.

Let's all keep working behind the scenes to further the ban on slaughter. I know I am.

Prayers to our family members who need them. May the Angels among us protect our loved ones, and our horses, especially those in the feedlots and the pens.

Speaking of weird names for pets, we just got a boxer pup, (our 12 year old boxer passed away a little over a year ago, my daughter named him Ty - and gave him the AKC name of Pupalicious Ty. She was calling him Pupito for a while too. Poor dog. Where's the dignity in that?

When we pray for Barbaro, and focus on his physical healing, I humbly ask you right now to include prayers for his peace of mind and continued courage. I also ask you to pray that Barbaro's caregivers are able to clearly hear Divine Guidance as to where Barbaro wants to be for the next phase in his healing.

Thank you God, that right and perfect decisions are made by Barbaro, and for Barbaro.

So happy you got a room with a view window! Wonderful!! And photo of Mrs. Jackson is priceless!!
Do you have your Santa hat on? But that would cover your gorgeous ears though . . . . well how about jingle bells on your harness - something classy for you big guy!!

    Love you SO MUCH!! ((((((((HUGS)))))))
A big kiss on your nose!!

Barbaro, in our local paper last evening (The York Dispatch), Mr. Jackson is mentioned in regard to a new baseball stadium being constructed in York (PA), and guess what, more importantly than the connection to baseball, Mr. Jackson is "Barbaro's Dad"!!!!

Also, an article (The York Dispatch, 12/14/06) about Kelly Young, Lost and Found Horse Rescue, Jacobus, PA, is full to capacity at Lost & Found as she recently rescued a large number of horses and mules from going to the SH!! God Bless you, Kelly!!
The article shows a photo of Kelly with one of the mules she rescued, and goes on to mention that the mules are getting used to human affection, they apparently had been work mules for Amish and only knew a hard life with no affection - so sad, but they are now with Kelly and that means lots of affection!!
Lost & Found Horse Rescue, Jacobus, PA, is in need, of course, of donations for hay, food, and medical expenses.

The double-barreled up-beat report from Mrs. J and Dr. Kathy is as good as it gets until Barbaro walks out of NBC for the next destination that he will call home... (as I've always said, well, for a longlong time, anyway, Home Is Where the Horse Is...)

Posted by Shelley in CA at December 15, 2006 5:44 AM [excerpts]

From reading the news above, and especially the euphoria surrounding our Barbaro, it is easy to feel good today. However, back on the race track, Bay Meadows had to cancel its racing program today after horses broke down in the first two races and had to be euthanized, with the jockeys subsequently refusing to continue the races. We have had rain off and on all week, and the jockeys felt that the undersurface was too slick. . . . [end of excerpt]

To pare a phrase: After fatal breakdowns in the first two races, the JOCKEYS refused to continue. Good. Accolades. Bravo. Hope they stick to their guns as long as the track remains slick - considering . . .

[more from Shelley in CA's post]

Harry Aleo's wonderful filly, Quite a Rush, is scheduled for a stakes race on Saturday at Bay Meadows - . . .
Bay Meadows is reporting that racing will resume tomorrow after scraping the track today of excess moisture. Still a big worry to think of her racing Saturday, especially for an owner and trainer we highly respect and love. The weather report for Saturday is for more rain and is expected to be colder as well. [end of excerpts]

btw - Harry Aleo is another wonderful human being I'd never heard of before Barbaro, whose interests and welfare concern me now.

The jockeys refused to continue. Wow. What is the history on that sort of thing, I am wondering. I have to really hand it to those jockeys. (Hope I don't make too many enemies expelling/expressing these opinions/sentiments...)

OY VEY, is all I can say. When is enough enough, anyway?

Got an email from Sharon Crumb this morning - she had a SECOND letter published in the Wallowa County Chieftain - and is asking that comments be submitted, to keep it alive on the net. Here is the link to her letter - attacking Congress for not passing the anti-slaughter legislation: (somebody make blue, please)

Here is the comment I just submitted; I saw that Daryl Smoliak's comment was published. Good going, Daryl! FOB's - get on board and add your comments. As long as there are comments, they will keep Sharon's letter on-line. (Her earlier one is being carried as well.)

OY VEY - WHEN IS ENOUGH, ENOUGH, ALREADY?

When the Senate ended its nauseating lame duck session last week, I was shocked and appalled. because that means that innocent American horses are STILL being slaughtered in Texas and Illinois, and being transported to be slaughtered even more brutally in Mexico, THREE MONTHS after the House of Representatives resoundingly passed H.R. 503 on September 7, 2006. The fact that the House Bill's Senate counterpart, S. 1915, languished and died in Committee, absolutely sickens me. Passage of this Act not only would end slaughter in the US of American horses for human consumption abroad, but also ends transportation outside the US for such purpose. The fact that the Senate killed the Bill, means the Act has to start all over again in the House. All that time and energy wasted - not to mention sentient, innocent lives.

Over 2,000 horses a month are still winding up as dinner overseas.

What goes on at the slaughterhouse is NOT humane euthanasia, no matter what you may have been "fed" to the contrary. If that is humane, I am a chicken.

Perhaps the biggest and cruelest lie of all, is that the horses who wind up going to slaughter are "old, sick, infirm" - A BIG LIE. That's what "they" want you to believe.

Many good internet links, such as www.saponline.org (Willie Nelson speaks for their agenda, btw) furnish facts and more links to the "real" story.

PLEASE do whatever you can to precipitate quick passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act as soon as possible when Congress reconvenes in January 2007. Contact your Representatives and Senators, requesting that the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act - as embodied in last session's H.R. 503 and S. 1915 - be submitted anew and acted on with all deliberate speed and without unnecessary delay.

Thank you, Wallowa County Chieftain, for publishing Sharon Crumb's follow-up to her earlier published letter urging passage of S. 1915. It is imperative that the public be informed, and from what I have seen, you are doing a very good job.

    C. Jaffe, a life-long horse owner, in Hammond, Indiana [end of my comment to Sharon's new article]

FOB's - PLEASE add your comments. ALEX - can you / would you please - link up top in the Updates to Sharon's new letter? After all, you are "officially" a reporter now, and Sharon's article being published is certainly newsworthy within our venue!

Alex, thank you for the upbeat updates. It is so nice, especially around the holidays to see Mrs. Jackson smiling. It makes me feel good just to see her happy. She has been through so much these last seven months. I sure bet Michael will be happy to see such an improved Barbaro from his last visit. He deserves much happiness too when it comes to Barbaro. I hope he will be home for a holiday visit. They need to be able to visit with each other. They are a team.

Dearest Barbaro, so now you have a room with a view. I hope you are in the center of things in the ICU. You need to have things to look at to keep you occupied. If we were allowed, I bet you would have a bevy of Barbaro Fans outside your window singing you your favorite Christmas Carols throughout the entire holiday season. Of course we would be dressed up like your favorite fruits and veggies so no one else would notice. You know, like the Fruit of the Looms when they sing. Oh what fun that would be!!!!! I bet Captain Carrot Sally is tuning up right now !!!
More and more Christmas treats will be arriving daily for you and your friends and lots more surprises, all for you because you are first and foremost on our minds. Keep growing stonger and grow that hoof. Butterfly kisses from Bella, Gracie and me.

Good to see a well-deserved prison sentence for animal cruelty. From the ASPCA's newsletter:

QUEENS MAN SENTENCED IN ANIMAL CRUELTY CASE
Late last month the ASPCA, in conjunction with Queens district attorney, Richard Brown, announced the sentencing of Keidel Guy for felony animal cruelty. The 20-year-old Queens man was sentenced to 16 months in prison for starving a family of pit bulls.

In October 2005, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement agents Joseph Lemos and Omar Negrillo seized a nearly dead mother dog and her emaciated pup from Guy?s house after finding another puppy dead from starvation. Guy admitted to neglecting the dogs for weeks.

The mother, renamed Damsel, and her surviving pup, Jezebel, arrived at our Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital near death. Both animals were successfully treated and placed in loving homes. [end of news item from ASPCA]

What do Barbaro fans think of this?

A man who shot his Great Dane and left him tied to his dog house to die was arrested for cruelty to animals and given a sentence of 60 days in jail. The dog did not die from the gunshot wound but had to be euthanized because of the damage done and his suffering.

We have a very unique judge in Lake County who tries to teach people valuable lessons through his sentences, so he offered the man an option to the jail sentence. He must dress in a dog outfit and go to twenty elementary schools and speak to the children about cruelty to animals. He must wear the costume, sort of like Officer McGruff for child safety, if you've ever seen him. The man has not decided yet what he will do, but if he does dress as the dog and speak to the children, one third of his jail time will be dropped.

The judge said when he gives these punishments, he never has repeat offenders. He also made three teenagers hold a huge banner for 8 hours saying they threw rocks off an overpass and were sorry. He made another man who called policemen, pigs, stand on a popular street corner next to a pen with a pig and a sign that said, this is a pig, a policeman is not a pig. One other was to make two teenagers who stole the baby Jesus from a church manger scene walk in costume with a donkey, the girl, like Mary, riding it and holding the stolen baby Jesus and Joseph leading the donkey down the streets surrounding the church where they had stolen it. There detention time was lessened for doing this.

Quite a creative judge. I think the guy that shot the dog deserves a worse punishment though. Sometimes I just can't begin to understand the cruelty people are capable of today.

I agree with the judge in some of his decisions, but not in the case of the man who shot his dog. It takes a really disturbed, cruel person with no regard for life or humanity to shoot a dog. I don't believe putting on a dog suit will change his perspective any, unless of course, people will be allowed to shoot at him while he wore it. And as for giving this poor excuse for a human being access to the impressionable minds of children is appalling. It's a disgrace.

Hello out there to all FFOBs and Horse Lovers Everywhere!

Yes, it's me! I managed to survive what will probably be known as the worst storm to hit the Puget Sound area in a long time. Winds hit up to 80MPH, and there are still hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses out of power. They are likely to be in the dark for up to a week. My power went out for several hours, but SnoPUD, our power company, manged to get us back on line at the height of the storm. My hat is off to the repair crews out in the field, but I worried about their safety and lives as they worked in 60-80MPH winds. A very dangerous job indeed! Puget Sound Energy had to call their crews back during the storm because it was too dangerous for them to be out like that! Please continue to pray for these guys and gals who have a very long job ahead of them!

More later, but I am still catching up on all of this! Laura S. in Very Battered Washingtom State!

Check Barbaro's stall first. I bet he's got them stashed, just trying to drive Kathy J. crazy (which he knows as well isn't a far "drive" at all).

Thanks D'Anne and Renee for the Hannukah greetings; and Renee, you really cracked me up with that delicious pun - Happy Challa days. Wish I'd thought of that! Is that an original, or from some ethnic greeting card? This provides an opportunity to infiltrate yet another nice Yiddish word into our parlance - might as well expel some Challah! Challah is the traditional braided egg-twist bread. Interesting history, and recipe, in Wikipedia.

Kathy J, I have good news and bad news . . . The good news - I found everything! The shoes, the trenchcoat AND the sunglasses! The bad news . . . you know how you just had the trenchcoat drycleaned? Well, Miss Mocha was wearing it all when she was pitching manure muffins at the ex-senators. It will need to be "refreshed" before you wear it to Congress . . . unless of course you want to "cause a big stink in Washington".

AND I like my Barbarmopolitans and I'm having another one now!

Barbaro has re-opened Barbaro's Bistro. He also regrets his bad attitude toward the ex-Senators, but he felt that since they did nothing to help stop the slaughter of American horses, that he, an American horse, did not have to serve them.

For those of you that don't visit the forum, I wanted to repost this UPDATE and NEWS ON DREAM ASTER!!!

    *********************************

As you know last month we were talking and wondering about the last 2 foals of Ferdinand. Shuttle Girl and Dream Aster .

I had found Dream Aster and posted this and we all wanted to get her and make sure she was safe.. It was clear she did not want to race anymore and we worried what would happen to her. We even tried to claim her!!

Because of all the "activity" and such her owner/trainer raised the price up on her and was "sitting on her". Those that were working on this decided the best thing was to back off and let things cool down and go another avenue.. So that is what we all did.. Many many things took place 'behind the scenes' so here is the results!!!!

Our Dear FOB Otherlyn was able to contact Mr Whitfield, congressman from KY .. His wife and him were locating and buying Ferdinand offspring to keep his bloodline intact. He was most gracious that she contacted him, as he said (as quoated from otherlyn):

""He expressed gratitude for my part in leading him to Dream Aster. He said that, had it not been for me letting him know about her, and the help from the FOBs in locating her, he would never have been able to get her."""

Mr Whitfield has purchased her and she is on her way to her "daddy's Ferdinands" owners!!! She will be loved and cared for from the same people that bred and owned Ferdinand. She will be retired and allowed to be a horse again, maybe someday a broodmare.. That we don't know but we are assured that she will return "home" and remain there the rest of her days.

I have asked for pictures of her when she gets "home" so as soon as I have them I will post them for you.

now to find the other one (we still think is in Japan), Shuttle Girl (the very last foal born) as she will have the same chance to come home..

Thank you ALL for what you have done here and offlist!! WE DID IT!!! Dream Aster is back home...

BIG PAT ON THE BACK to otherlyn who made the calls to Mr Whitfield on Dream Aster!!! she got further than I did!!

Great JOB!! We have another sucess story to remember. Ferdinand is smiling down on all of us!!! We did this in his memory.. and in memory of all the other TB's that lost their life in the slaughter house.. may this disgrace end soon!!!!!

Tears of happpiness and tears of sorrow, but from those tears and sorrow came some goodness!

So there's Barbaro, in his nice new stall drive thru bistro business going well and guess what happened? A customer came to the drive thru and ordered some Barbaro-choco ice cream. It was Tyra Banks! She took one look at Barbaro in his cool sunglasses and red sequined bow tie and offered him a modeling job on the spot!

So there he is, in a lounge chair with the diamond studded sunglasses on, sipping a Barbarmopolitan and nodding his head, his mane blowing in the wind, he gets up from the lounge to dance with Tyra to the tune "I'm bringing sexy back".

It is so wonderful that Barbaro continues his great progress of healing.
I must say, though, that I am worried about when he leaves New Bolton. I think the Jacksons said he would not be going home with them -- my heart goes out to him. I want him to be around the people who have been there daily -- the Jacksons, Michael, and Peter. Going to Kentucky won't allow that to happen.
As we have learned from Barbaro, horses, especially him, have hearts, souls, and are very, very smart.
Much Love to Barbaro, and Many Thanks to the Jacksons, Alex, Dr. Richardson, Michael, Peter, all the staff at New Bolton, and anyone else who has been there for Barbaro.
Hope you all have a joyous, peaceful, and love filled holiday and new year.

Then we can all band together to help support the rescues in our states to make sure no more horses are left to suffer and die from abuse and neglect. They will need our help and support.. All horses deserve to die with dignity and with love. Retirement should be happy care free lives..

Even when this Bill PASSES, we will still have much to do!! We have seen great things in the last few months from the FOB's, and it will NOT stop!!!

"Fractured his left front ankle while battling for the lead in 2nd race on 12/14/06 at Bay Meadows on a muddy unsafe track. Was the 2nd of 2 horses to break their ankles and both were euthanized. The other was a 3 year old filly named Dancing Rose. The rest of the card was canceled"

Here's the entry for Dancing Rose...

    Here comes Barbaro
    right down NBC's lane.
He's on the move and he wants his grass so he's
    dragging Dr. D. again.
He doesn't care how cold it is or how long he has been out
if he doesn't get to graze when he wants to
    he will bite and pout.

Hay FOBs....the Barbaro carols are indeed great fun. You all are so fun, and talented.

I will take this little bit of fun with me today....to off set the saddness of the breakdowns.

Please don't think me irreverent for interjecting "Let it Snow" into the sad news of this day.

We may be grateful for eachother, for Barbaro's view, and for the good work that the BARBARO EFFECT is producing. Working to end slaughter, do more rescues, and promote safer tracks...etc.

    I saw Mocha kissing Barbaro
underneath the carrot wreath last night
They didn't see me peep, 'cause they were kissing oh so deep
I thought that they were tucked up in their stalls and fast asleep.
Then I saw Mocha tickle Barbaro
underneath his star so snowy white
Oh what a sight it would have been, if the doctor had only seen
    Mocha kissing Barbaro last night.

This just came in my email:

We just received word from our publisher that the new release date for the "Kentucky Derby 132 Review" has been pushed back to the first of the year. We sincerely apologize that the book will not arrive before Christmas, but we will work as fast as we can to have it shipped by early January.

Attached is a downloadable certificate that can be presented in lieu of the book in the event that you had hoped to give it as a holiday gift. Although we know this is not an adequate replacement, we hope that having something physical to give will serve as a temporary remedy to the problem.

Please feel free to call us at (502) 473-1046 with any questions or concerns. Again, we extend our most sincere apologies for the inconvenience, and as always, we appreciate your continuing patience and support.

    Sincerely,

Joyce Moore - great letter to AQHA. If I still belonged (as I did when I had a QH), I'd be telling them to take my membership and shove it, right about now. Would you please repost to today's comments? And also put on DB? Want to see that get maximum circulation. Thanks, dear. Hope Skip remains well and that you are past the worst with losing Alexis. (did I get those names right?)

Does anybody know members of the AQHA and/or the pro-slaughter vet associations, who personally disagree with the "official" position of the respective groups? Would like to hear from some of those, and have them communicate with the political powers that be.
    THANKS - CJ

    What a day of contrasts.
Two unnecessary deaths at Bay Meadows. I applaud the jockeys for saying "No more"...please don't let tracks open when weather is that bad...

On Forum, AnnieLouky has posted that 3 of the 4 stranded babies are safe and secure now; tragically, the black colt died. He is the colt who was literally starving in the feedlot. He made it to a foster home and was safe and secure in his last days.

What kind of person breaks up a mare and foal, kills the mare and leaves the foal to starve? I want to look the people responsible in the face and ask them that. I want to ask them how they live with themselves, how they sleep at night. Whether they have any children and is this the kind of thing they want their children to do as well.

BUT, we have Otherlyn, Mary L's and Mr. Whitfield's triumph with Dream Astor. This is huge. WELL DONE, Mary L and Otherlyn! WELL DONE!!!

If you haven't done so yet, will you email the people at the Ferdinand Fund and let them know?

I used to work for the Internal Revenue Service, and it has been awhile since I left, but I suggest you call the IRS Hotline at 1-800-829-1040 and ask them for advice. Make sure you get and write down the employee's name, badge number, time and date when you call for your answer, and take written notes on what he/she tells you. This is for your protection, in case you follow the advice given and it turns out to be wrong. If I were you, I would keep your records for a while longer, in case you are audited, then you will have proof to back up what you put down on your tax return. If you have a tax preparer, ask him/her for advice, too. It may cost you more, but it is better to be safe than sorry! GOOD LUCK!

We are all seeking maximum exposure re anti-slaughter issues - so I am reposting this from Sharonlynn. Note - this is re a DIFFERENT letter in a DIFFERENT online newspaper, than the one of hers I told you about earlier today in my post at December 15, 2006 6:47 PM. Excerpt from Sharon's post from the last cached batch:

Hello Fellow Fans of Barbaro. I have a few minutes to stop by and let you know that I had another letter published about slaughter. I wrote this the week before the Senate dismissed. But, it has a comments section and some pro slaughter have decided to voice up. I did have a Vet confirm what I said was true, so check it out, I got us an opening to voice out and hopefully the right people will read our comments and get the horses a vote early next year.

Susan E--I find myself wondering what causes people to be so cruel too, because I can't fathom hurting a helpless creature.

Like you, I have to just look at the bright side of humanity, a good example every single person on this board. Where else can you go to get a prayer for your cat that nobody has even met? There are some big hearts here.

AND--I truly believe in karma, what goes around comes around, whatever you want to call it. Someday people who abuse those not able to defend themselves will somehow have to explain it.

Off my soapbox now, may you and Felix the Wonder Panther have a snuggle filled weekend. I will be thinking of you...

On a sad note, here in Kentucky, a small pup was found hog-tied and with his mouth tied also, lying in the middle of the road. A trucker found him and after about 15 minutes was able to untie him. He's now at a Humane Society. In Lexington Wednesday, a dog was shot with an arrow in it's own back yard. Sadly that dog did not survive. What is our world coming to?

Thanks for all the good messages about Dream Aster and also to all who was involved in it (ESP to Mr Whitfield a BIG advocate for the "cause" and who has met Mrs Jackson also!!)

I am still pinching myself to know that she is home with Ferdinands owners. What a lucky lady!!

Ps, The FOB's also Saved another TB horse tonight, her name is Lone Star Miss. Her ransom has been paid and soon will be picked up at the brokers place and placed in a temp home until we work things out to get her to the rescue that is willing to take her. Another horse is free from the killers. I hope to meet her soon as she makes her journey ..

    CJ,

I'm doing ok. My young dog, Cody, still hasn't adapted to being alone. He's still looking for Alexis.

Skip's as ok as he's going to be. The arthritis is causing more of a problem at this point than the founder. He's still bright eyed and enjoys being handwalked around the property. Sometimes too much. He still feels good enough to try dragging me around and occasionally rears and comes down bucking. I know I won't be able to keep him comfortable for too much longer, so I just focus on TODAY and am thankful that I've had him for this long.

    Thanks so much for asking!

    ###### Challenge ##### Repost ##

As 2006 comes to a close, many of us are now receiving membership renewals from various organizations. I'm issuing a challenge to all FOB's to investigate any organization you're involved with and find out what their stance on slaughter is.

As a long-time member of the AQHA, I simply cannot accept their harshly stated pro-slaughter stance. Following is my final letter to them.

    December 14, 2006

    American Quarter Horse Association
    P.O. Box 200
    Amarillo, TX 79168

    Re: Membership

    Dear AQHA,

Due to the AQHA’s stance in favor of slaughtering horses, I will no longer accept being associated with your organization.

I strongly encourage the AQHA to review its’ stance and to support legislation that will end the slaughter of horses in this country. Please ask yourselves how your support of slaughter impacts the youth involved in the AQHA. Is the message we want to send our children one which states that it is acceptable to use up a horse and then send it to a horrific death at a slaughter plant? Or, do we want to promote caring attitudes with a focus on responsibility for and to the horses?

Owning any animal comes with a cost, both financially and emotionally. Our responsibility to horses does not stop when a horses’ show or racing career end. Those who are not willing to make the final show of compassion by humanely ending the horses life by lethal injection performed by a licensed veterinarian, should not own horses, or other animals for that matter.

Each and every argument proposed by the pro-slaughter faction holds absolutely no truth. The facts are that horses will NOT suffer additional abuse or neglect if slaughter is made illegal as evidenced by various California humane organizations that have not seen any increase in such things since slaughter was banned in that state. Ending the slaughter of horses will NOT take away an individual’s personal property rights. Quite the opposite is true. Killer buyers will no longer be able to acquire horses at auctions by ‘promising’ sellers that their horses will ‘go to a good home’. Further, California experienced a 34% reduction in the theft of horses after slaughter was outlawed. Ending slaughter will NOT prevent owners from euthanizing horses but will end the purchase and dumping of these animals by the killers in order to make a few cents per pound. Ending slaughter will NOT cause thousands of horses to be abandoned. Nearly 90,000 horses were slaughtered in 2005. This is down from 300,000 just a few years ago. This means that some 200,000 were absorbed back into the industry. The movement to end the slaughter of horses does NOT involve the cattle industry. Cattle are raised as food animals, horses aren’t.

The vast majority of American’s are opposed to slaughtering horses. What will it take for the AQHA to stop viewing horses as disposable items and to understand that slaughter is not an alternative to providing appropriate care? Instead of fighting to continue the horrific practice of slaughtering horses, the AQHA should be focusing on ending over-breeding and the breeding of substandard horses. Most importantly, the AQHA, as the leading registry, is in a unique position to influence our youth. The question remains, which message does the AQHA want to send them.

    Sincerely,

    Joyce J. Moore

Great news regarding Dream Aster - Rep. Whitfield is an awesome person. Hope he can lead us to victory right away next year.

Thanks to all who helped save the mare today. Another success story with so many more to save.

Since S1915 didn't pass, I will consider all the good news about Barbaro and Dream Aster as my most prized Christmas gift. Thank you, Dear Lord, for working through these wonderful people (Otherlyn, Rep. Whitfield, Mary L) to make this happen. I am just so proud of you and Otherlyn. Can't wait to see a picture of her.

I hope your place feels like "home" to you! I'm happy that there is a window for you with a view.

Will you please grab your blanket Honey? The bigger, fluffy one will be perfect. Because Minnesota has cooler air moving in, you get to have your blanket pulled up high on your neck! I worry.

May you dream sweet dreams tonight Barbaro with plenty of friendly faces, fun times and fantastic treats! Come to think of it, may your day tomorrow be much the same!

And don't forget Honey, the healing will continue through the night and strength will carry you through your day tomorrow.

I love you Barbaro. Sleep well and snuggle up. I'll be here in the morning to check on an update. If I'm too early, I'll be back. Good night Honey. XXOOx

Thanks again, for everything! Words can't describe how much you mean to all of us - you're a truly special person!!

OMG - what a surprise - On TVG just now, on "Bloodhorse News Break" -
JUST SAW VIDEO of BARBARO out grazing, seems to be a new one I've never seen before; he was out with a man I didn't recognize. They didn't show Barbaro's legs, but ran great closeups of head, looked gorgeous, head up looking very interested/intense, and down in the green grass, grazing. They quoted Dr. R about Barbaro getting out of NBC before too long, and saying that the right hind was healed. What a pleasant surprise to have that visual tonight!

I don't understand; Debra WI and Leslie in MN both reported that Snifter's Spirit (who was the number 3 horse) won the race (7th at Sam Houston), but I watched and it appeared the number 3 horse was third. What was I not seeing correctly? It was my first time watching on the internet; boy was I ever wrong! I was happy for him being 3rd! The horse that won that race, won it running away - way in front of the rest of the field - very impressive. I am confused (so what else is new? haha). CJ

watching TVG - final (10th) race as Los Alamitos - number one horse's jockey, Saul Ramirez, was flipped off and landed flat on his back with a loud smack when the horse reared up as he was getting a leg up. They're looking to see who the substitute rider is going to be. This happened in a split second while he was being given a leg up. The horse is "Dis Devil Can Fly" and another jockey is getting ready to ride. They're talking about how dangerous it can be anytime around horses. Saul Ramirez was able to walk away with assistance, they didn't wait for the EMT's. Apparently he wasn't badly hurt. Good good good. CJ

Hi all! I usually post in the forum, but was told there was a post here about my big boy SNIFTERS SPIRIT!!!!!!!! He won a huge race!!!! He was the horse in the lead, and won by 6 lengths! He also ran 6f in 1:11.2, which is pretty darn quick for a 2 year old! We are going to put him in an allowance race in January, and then run him in a $125,000 Stakes race in February, both at Sam Houston.

Let me tell you about his name... his mother was Snifter, and she was the love of my life. Sadly, Spirit was the only baby she had, as she died when he was just 4 months old. Spirit's daddy is a gray, and I am SOOO glad he looks like his momma, especially since she is not here. But, she really was here tonight, with her fantastic son, bringing him home safe and sound, and with a commanding victory! This was only his second race of his life, isn't that amazing!! Let's talk about amazing, though....

Spirit was born on April 29th. Who else was born that day? The one, the only, BARBARO!!!!! Spirit is one year younger, though! :))

Lots and lots of carrots and lovin' for my brave boy! He ran like a champ!

Lynnette - I watched the race on the internet link to Sam Houston. What a race - he left them all behind! Congratulations! What happened to his poor momma when he was just 4 months old? You must be so glad to have him as her living legacy. I followed your posts on the Forum before his last race too. Love the pics. So happy for you! Hugs - CJ

Posted by: C. Jaffe at December 16, 2006 8:29 AM

    Lynette,

I tried earlier to repost the original information about Spirit from the forum which you included in your post above because I thought it was a really touching story. I had also included the URL's to your photographs which are over in the forum - if you don't do it, I will try tomorrow for those who aren't comfortable going there. The photographs are really precious and so personal. I don't know what happened to the post - it seems to have gone to some think spot to be reviewed for incendiary language or some such thing! Who knows, it may still show up.

For any of you who want to see the whole thread on the forum, it is in the Horse Racing folder entitled "My Horse is Racing Tonight". The thread started just before Spirit's first race. Tonight was his second, ever! And, in true Fog fashion, he came out of the fog and never looked back!

I think Spirit is going to have a great fan club here! Congratulations, again...

Posted by: Shelley in CA at December 16, 2006 8:31 AM

Thanks for the publicity Shelley! :) I have to put you on the payroll!

C Jaffe, Snifter died after having a stroke. She fought valiantly for a couple of days, but it was obvious she was suffering. It still makes me cry to talk about. She was super special to me, and her son, just, he is everything and more. I again can't tell you how happy I am that God kept him her wonderful color, it's a fantastic testament to the wonderful mare she was! She raced for us for five years (which is a really long time in the racing world!) and she won 13 times! She was also a Stakes-placed mare. We were very very proud of her. Her son may out-do her, and that is just fine. He is a completely fitting tribute, very worthy to carry her name and be known as Snifters Spirit!

Btw, here he is when he was a baby, right after his momma died. You'll notice the horses around him, protecting him from me ;) He was a doll, even then! http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c374/lynettelk/BabySpirit.jpg

Jo. Have been watching the Morning Line. Great news about Fondmort - ties removed so he can move about. Must be wonderful for him. And did you see a mention of Bobby in the text to say he was improving? I saw yesterday you had been watching the showjumping. How could Finbarr jump so high from virtually a standstill? And did you notice the Fondmort/Harry Potter blaze on one of the horses? It also is interesting that in showjumping an eight year old is classed as a young horse. Oh and I read that Bindaree, the Grand National winner of a few years ago, now retired from racing, has gone eventing and won a dressage class. It's so good when they can find another career for these horses.

"John Whitaker could win on a donkey from Blackpool beach," the commentator joked to the audience. LOL

I've seen quite a few retired racehorses in the showjumping ring. It's nice to know that some can adapt and go on to a long and happy career with (if they're lucky!) people as lovely as the Whitakers! :-)

Barbaro has a view, Fondmort is on the loose, an FOB horse wins..what a great time of year and such wonderful gifts! (I'm so jealous of you folks in the UK - you get to watch show jumping!)

Today is tree day at my house. That and baking day, too. Gotta make those cookies! So I need more Green Mountain!

    Good morning everybody,
    ##
LYNETTE, such a sweet little baby he was! I feel like I know so much about him thanks to your wonderful pictures and stories about his mom. I kinda feel like he's partly mine too. I hope you don't mind sharing him! Please let me know if he gets to run at The Fairgrounds, I might have to take a day off from work to see him!
Thanks for your wonderful pictures and updates.

"It's almost like this was meant to happen," Roy Jackson said. "There have been so many positive things that have come from this. Even if Barbaro would have won the Triple Crown, I don't think there would be this kind of interest."

So much good has come from Barbaro -- he is a miracle on Earth. Thank you God!

    'morning, y'all~
    thanks, Alex.

I found both the TIME and People issues that have Barbaro in photos- TIME gave incorrect info in the blurb and shows him standing with his leg broken on the track. I will not buy it, and boo to TIME for accentuating the painful.
People, on the other hand, had a pic of him grazing with Doc Dean. That one, I came home with.

Good Morning Super Horse Hope you got my card and gift. Not necessary to send a thank you note. You'd be worn out from all that letter writing and never get time to graze. Thank you for giving me my Christmas wish. I love you.
